Congressional Equality Act introduced LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress at highest membership ever All are Democrats

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus has reached its highest membership ever – 155 lawmakers – just as Democrats have regained control of the House of Representatives and reintroduced the Equality Act.
All members are Democrats. In the previous session of Congress, the group had two Republican members, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo, who attempted to forge bipartisan support for LGBTQ civil rights laws. Ros-Lehtinen retired at the 2018 election, while Curbelo was defeated by his Democratic challenger.

Today [on March 13] Lambda Legal praised Representatives David Cicilline (D-RI) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) as well as Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) for introducing H.R. 5, the Equality Act, in the 116th Congress. This bipartisan legislation will update existing federal nondiscrimination laws,
including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act, to confirm that discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is unlawful discrimination based on sex. The bill agrees with the many court decisions which have concluded that discrimination against LGBT people in employment,
