MARY POPPINS VILLAGE THEATRE Issaquah: to January 4 Everett: January 9-February 8 Anticipation for Village Theatre’s production of Mary Poppins ran high, especially after casting was announced of Cayman Ilika as Mary Poppins and Greg McCormick Allen as Bert. Both have every attribute you would want for those roles, and each is as professional a pro can be in delivering the goods! And so it is no surprise at all that they do in spades!

Then you have some lovely casting choices like real-life-marrieds Christine Marie Brown and Andrew McGinn as George and Winifred Banks, the keep-your-eye-on youngster Mae Corley as young Jane Banks, other real-lifemarrieds Connie Corrick (as the Bird Woman) and Hugh Hastings (as the Admiral) and the sure-to-be-comic-duo of Laura Kenny and Erik Gratton as the housekeeper Mrs. Brill and the butler Robertson Ay. Add the furious, chew the stage, anti-Poppins aria of Mary Jo DuGaw (as Miss Andrews) and a passel of dancers, and you’ve brewed up a terrific, family fun show sure to please everyone!

Through the years my love of country and western music has inspired me to amass a sizable collection of country CDs and tapes, though my country collection is still not as large as my rhythm & blues or jazz collections. That the music of mostly Scot-Irish, Evangelical Protestants in Appalachia appeals to a Gay Cuban Jew in South Florida speaks volumes for that music’s universality. Along with my partner, Michael Greenspan, I visited the City of Nashville, Tennessee, the capital of country music, where I saw the Country Music Hall of Fame, heard the Grand Ole Opry, and stood on the stage of country’s “mother church,” the Ryman Auditorium. I even watch “Nashville,” ABC’s country music soap opera. If that ain’t country, you can kiss my grits.

As a country music fan who is also a Gay man, I was delighted on November 20, when not one but two male country singers came out as Gay men. After 52 years of life, two marriages and a notorious arrest in a public park, singer Ty Herndon revealed country’s worst kept secret in an interview with TV’s “Entertain-

ment Tonight.” Like many of us, Herndon found it hard to come out, thinking “that I couldn’t be gay and be in country music.

I’ve dreamed about being in country music since I was 6 years old. It’s my life, it’s what I do, it’s who I am, and I went to great lengths to cover up that fact to be a country star.” Herndon added that he has been in “an awesome relationship” with a man for several years and hoped his partner would propose “right after this interview.”

Herndon’s announcement inspired fellow country singer Billy Gilman, best known for his days as a child star, to come out the very same day, in a five and half minute video posted on YouTube. “It’s difficult for me to make this video, not because I’m ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist, or a gay person,” Gilman said. “But it’s pretty silly to know that I’m ashamed of doing this knowing that because I’m in a genre and in an industry that is ashamed of me for being me.” Now 26, Gilman is trying to make a comeback but found no interest on the part of major record labels in Nashville.

“If people don’t like your music, that’s one thing, but after having sold over five million records, having a wonderful life in the music industry, I knew something was wrong

when no major label wanted to sit down and have a meeting and listen to the new stuff,” he said. “I threw a showcase in Nashville, and no major label showed.”

The reluctance of Herndon and Gilman to come out until their prime was past is understandable, because country music is not Gay friendly. If rock & roll is “the sound of the city” then country music, as its name suggests, is the sound of the country, especially of the rural South. As a music steeped in tradition, country celebrates the values of rural America: songs about God, patriotism or the straight nuclear family are as common as songs about drinking beer, driving trucks, or cheating on your spouse. Country artists, most of who were born and raised in the red states, also tend to be more conservative than artists in other musical genres, and the Nashville musical establishment is very conservative. (Nashville is also a major producer of religious literature.)

Most openly LGBT country singers, musicians or composers – including Patrick Haggerty and Lavender Country, Doug Stevens and the Outband, Mark Weigle, Teresa Trull and Nancy Vogl – came out within the queer or Lesbian-feminist sub-cultures and are virtually unknown to mainstream country fans. Thus, when Steve Grand emerged in 2013 he was wrongly labeled as country’s first openly Gay singer. Country music was a bit kinder to Lesbians: the Nashville establishment briefly tolerated k.d. lang when she joined forces with producer Owen Bradley to record “Shadowland” in 1988; and Chely Wright preceded Herndon and Gilman by coming out in 2010. But, on the whole, most queer country artists find it wise to stay in their Nashville closets, like the fictional Will Lexington in ABC’s country soaper “Nashville.”

I hope it does not stay that way. Country music owes a lot to its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans* artists, a debt that cannot be paid while those artists remain closeted.

Nor is country necessarily homophobic or transphobic, as some LGBT activists think.

Many reggae artists are homophobic, but their homophobia is due to Jamaica’s Evangelical Protestant tradition, not to reggae music’s inherent qualities. By the same token, country music is not prejudiced against sexual or gender minorities, though sadly many of its artists and audiences are. I hope the example set by lang, Wright, Herndon and Gilman will spread, and Nashville will be able to show its true rainbow colors.

my ears from getting a handle on what else attracts me so strongly to this music. Beyond the sensual delights of orchestral textures that amaze me, there is form and substance.

I can feel it, but I can’t pin it down.

Sure, the very first movement on this disc is a passacaglia, one of my favorite musical forms in which a thematic and rhythmic pattern is worked over again and again. And there are scherzos and variations. But none of it follows any formula for more than a moment or two. Change and invention are everywhere, yet there is a sense of the whole.

Something holds it all together, giving a sense of satisfaction even when a movement ends “up in the air” at an apparent nowhere.

This CD of nearly 80 minutes contains three works: “Symphony No. 1” (1951), “Tout un monde lointain” (1970), and “The Shadows of Time” (1997). When you hear the mastery of orchestration in this symphony, you will have trouble believing that this was his first piece for orchestra! It is a fantastical trip through a forest of unexpected sounds, from the very softest to giant crescendos, and from the gentlest gossamer to lightning bolts of piercing brass. There are also bits of wit and playfulness. The tonality is of twentieth century, for sure, but there is none of serialism, minimalism, or other in-vogue programs of the composer’s contemporaries. Dutilleux is not like anyone you’ve ever heard. And his music cries out for multiple hearings. This is, of course, the great virtue of a CD over a live performance. I have indeed found Dutilleux more compelling with each audition.

“Tout un monde lointain” (“A Whole Distant World”) is five-movement concerto for cello and orchestra. Aside from the superb

accompaniment of the Seattle Symphony under Ludovic Morlot, the shining glory of this recording is the unparalleled beauty of Xavier Phillips’ sound. The 43-year-old cellist has simply the most beautiful and cleanest sound of any cellist I have ever heard.

(He plays a 1710 Matteo Gofriller cello.) His advocacy of this work is beyond reproach.

Transcendent song-full soaring pairs off with passionate and articulate drama to show how Dutilleux was no stranger to everything a cellist can be asked to do. The integration of Phillips’ tone with the orchestra is utterly brilliant and compelling.

I find “The Shadows of Time,” a six-movement work from 1997, the least compelling of the bunch. Perhaps I just need more time with it. Dutilleux was reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII. The first movement is an extended (3 minutes, 15 seconds) fanciful fanfare featuring mainly the brass instruments. The third movement is dedicated to the memory of Anne Frank and all the innocent children who suffered.

Here Dutilleux employs three boy sopranos who intone in French, “Why us? Why the star?” I didn’t find this as affecting as I would have expected.

Throughout the disc, the dedication of conductor Ludovic Morlot , who knew Dutilleux, is translated into impressive articulation of every aspect of the music. The orchestra seems to share his love of this composer, for its contribution is stunning, leaving one hard pressed to imagine a better performance.

And the stereo sound is excellent.

Moran has made the decision to direct his own work, often, and while that allows him to keep his vision clear, it also means that he doesn’t have another critical eye helping him develop his plays with perhaps some hard questions. It may be a personal bias that I believe playwrights should work with directors, but many other theater practitioners advocate for that, as well.

A new play, Fangs, by local playwright Jim Moran is being presented at Eclectic Theater. It has an interesting political slant, showing a Republican state lawmaker in the middle of a campaign when his daughter charges him with hypocrisy. It’s comedic reality until it becomes farce.

Moran sets up a solid confrontation in a cabin in the woods during a snowstorm.

Riley Perkins (Chris Macdonald) and his aide, Toby Beale (Shane Regan), continue to work the phones on state business and campaign issues. They wheel and deal while Riley’s wife (Samantha Routh) gets drunk and snow falls.

Suddenly, Riley’s daughter, Madison (Rachel Anne Godbe), arrives after hitching a ride with a state wildlife official (Ashley Bagwell). She’s come to remind her father that she had an abortion when she was 16, and she thinks his stance against abortion is hypocritical, since he helped her obtain hers but would legislate against others doing so.

There is a fair amount of credible dialogue in the first part of the play. It’s labeled Act One, though there is not much

that demands this short piece to have an intermission. The situation is mined for laughs, especially adding the odd wildlife guy, but we’ve certainly had our share of hypocritical legislators in the news. At the midpoint, Moran’s construct is poised to go in many directions, plausibly.

However, his choice is to let what he’s built go completely farcical, dissipating any real revelations and resolutions: the focus becomes a mountain lion close to the cabin and what’s to be done about it, while stepmother Karen gets out-of-her-mind drunk and flirtatious (for no reason) with the wildlife guy.

If you like outrageous farce, then you will love the direction Moran takes with this piece. I think he kind of squandered an interesting set-up and may not have challenged himself to grapple with and deepen the family conflict and the political interweaving.

The cast overall does good work with the characters, especially Macdonald and Godbe, who have good interplay as father and daughter. Godbe has the right level of strident, self-righteous young woman, filled with ideals and clear notions of right versus wrong. Macdonald handles her confrontation with the strength of a father who believes in himself and is capable of answering her charges with real reasons.

Bagwell is funny throughout, and delivers ridiculous lines with total gravity.

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN A&E Writer ALL THE WAY SEATTLE REPERTORY THEATRE Through January 4 Peter Frechette has appeared in every social medium possible. He’s worked on the television shows “The Fact of Life” and “thirtysomething” – earning an Emmy nomination for what was considered a controversial homosexual scene. His stage work won him the Obie Award for his Off-Broadway work, and he has been nominated twice for the Tony Award for his performances on Broadway.

But it is probably his work in the cult classic Grease 2 that gains him the most recognition. Currently, Mr. Frechette’s work brings him to the Seattle Repertory Theatre for the 2014 Tony Award winning and acclaimed play about President Lyndon Johnson, All the Way, in the role of Hubert Humphrey.

Andrews-Katz: At what age were you bitten by the “Theater Bug” and by what performance?

Frechette: When I was in third grade, I was in the Christmas play. I was a line of trees and stood there with others, as someone came by and decorated us. I thought it was the friggin’ coolest thing in the world!

In the 8th grade I was cast in a play. I had

a little part in it and for some reason I got bumped to playing the lead. I remember being shocked that I was having a lot of fun.

That was the biting of the bug. I didn’t do theater after that as I thought I was going to be a rock and roll singer. I majored in theater as a freshman in college, and it’s hard to account for what I thought I was going to do back then. I was kind of a blank slate and that’s a good thing.

Andrews-Katz: The film Grease 2 was your first major film role. How did you come up for the part and what can you recall of the audition process?

Frechette: It was the first big, large scaled thing I had auditioned for in any arena. I had been in New York for about two years by then. I had done a few Off-Broadway shows without being signed to any agent, and a zillion Off-Off-Broadway shows. Somehow, I don’t recall how, I was freelancing with an agent and he submitted me for the part. I didn’t think anything of it except that it was a paying job. I had tremendous fun with the audition. It involved improvisation, something I’m good with, and I didn’t have time to think about it and get nervous with any ego. It was just fun. I hadn’t read the script yet, so I just played along and made things up. I guess it was my time of being a young actor not afraid because you don’t know enough to be afraid.

After several weeks of them saying, “we are interested,” I was flown out to L.A. for one final round and then I was offered the job.

Andrews-Katz: In 1989 you were nominated for Broadway’s Tony Award for being in Richard Greenberg’s play Eastern Standard. Do you prefer stage work or being on either big or small screens?

Frechette: I’ve done five of his [Greenberg’s] plays, in eight or nine different productions. The answer differs. Right now I will tell you that I prefer being on stage. I love working on camera, but I haven’t been around it for a few years. When I am, I love it. A lot of actors will tell you that stage or screen is really the same, but it isn’t. The camera sees and listens to you in a different way than an audience does by sitting in the seats and being present at the moment. They are both amazing and require different muscles to be exerted. Right now, I prefer being on stage. I feel like I’m right where I ought to be, and doing just what I should be doing. I’m fortunate enough to have this job and working with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Andrews-Katz: Can you tell us about some of the 1989 controversy that erupted when your character, from television’s “thirtysomething,” was shown in bed with another man? (The joke is on them, you were nominated for the Emmy Award!)

Frechette: I was amused and bemused by it at the same time. I didn’t see it coming,

what Humphrey looked and sounded like.

Andrews-Katz: As Vice-President, Humphrey created controversy by being vocally and completely faithful to LBJ’s policies and stands as President. Was there more ambition to Humphrey or was he simply a type of “Yes-Man”?

Frechette: He wasn’t always completely in consent to the official hard line administration policies of the time. After the 1965 inauguration, and things began to escalate in Vietnam, Humphrey was very much outspoken against our involvement in the war. To the extent that he was cut out of any meetings of the inner sanctum, Oval Office dealings with Vietnam.

He was kicked out when the chiefs of staffs or any of them had dealings about the war.

He finally shut the heck up and sort of compromised himself at a press conference by saying that these protestors at the universities and such were opposed to the President and are dishonoring our brave soldiers who are dying in Vietnam. When he was running for President afterwards Johnson literally didn’t endorse him. He didn’t say anything in favor of Humphrey. Humphrey was still the Vice President while trying to run for President and tried to speak out against the policies. He had his own inner war going on within himself. He had tried to resign and step down from being Vice President, but was convinced not to do it. Finally, as his career turned from summer to fall, he just spoke his mind. He didn’t lose the presidency by as much a margin as people seem to remember. It was almost 50-50.

Andrews-Katz: How did you get involved with the show “All The Way”?

Frechette: It was in my fourth season of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It was 2011 and early in that season, the next season was announced. That’s when cast members start thinking of where they want to be next year and what they want to be doing.

Andrews-Katz: Who were your earliest influences in becoming a performer?

Peter Frechette: When I was really young I both loved watching TV and going to the movies. I also loved listening to music on the radio or records, and watching performers on TV. It didn’t register that that was what people did for a living. I thought they were just born doing it, or were from another planet. I remember the craziness and intense teamwork of Jack Klugman and Tony Randall from “The Odd Couple.” I also remember Karen and Richard Carpenter; they were practically kids, and yet there was something weirdly polished about them. I remember Lily Tomlin and Richard Pryor. Later on in life, when I was living in NYC, I saw Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd with standing room tickets, at least every couple of months when I could afford it. I remember Donna McKechnie and Kelly Bishop in A Chorus Line.

Hubert Humphrey

weirdly enough, because I was too busy to see it at the time. I wasn’t thinking indefinitely about it. That was the first of a few (four) episodes that I did on that show. I loved getting into bed with David Grant, both of us without our shirts. We were close friends and it was fun. We even lit up a cigarette after and you could NEVER do that now. Back then it implied a certain post-coital sexiness. It was not in my mind that this was rare for television (unprecedented, in fact) or that people were thinking it was wrong or crossing a line.

I was back in New York in previews for a play I was in when it aired so I didn’t see it when it first aired. Then there were requests to talk to people in the press and talk about the controversy of it all. The advertisers were pulling ads and ABC said it would never air that episode again. I was really shocked at the time thinking that such a situation would exist. I thought it was extreme. Then I thought, “Well, I guess we don’t see a lot of men in bed with no clothes on, smoking…” I was slightly removed from it.

trates us or whatever you want to call [that feeling of craziness], it’s just bizarre. When the story was originally written, right after the Second World War, we had The American Dream. Everyone wanted to buy stuff. People went nuts buying stuff that we don’t need. These megastores are all full of stuff we don’t need. Most of us start to feel it when we see the first of the holiday decorations – that’s usually mid-October nowadays. When it finally comes to this moment of Christmas Night and Christmas Day that’s when we relax and realize that we only need each other – not all that “stuff.”

That’s where our hearts grow three sizes.

usual peak. Choreography from Kathryn van Meter is adorable and energetic. The one piece that doesn’t gel is the too frantic and piecemeal “Step in Time” where less could have been much more, if fewer tappers had been given a more cohesive moment to shine.

Those who might expect the movie version need to understand that this script has been added to and changed a bit by book writer Julian Fellowes, and has a bit more of a lesson on how to be parents than the movie.

Mary’s influence is less direct, though she’s still there to clean up messes. George Banks has a better arc, from a disconnected, always at work, father and husband, to remembering that he had dreams as a child and finally embracing that. McGinn has a delicious moment of silliness with which to express that.

Even though Mary Poppins is not specifically a holiday show, it feels like it is.

This undertaking was so large it apparently took two directors (Steve Tomkins and Kathryn Van Meter) and two music directors (Tim Symons and Bruce Monroe)! The set challenges are pretty massive, with set changes every few moments from inside and outside the Banks house to the park to a bank and various adventures that Mary Poppins takes the children to see. Scott Fyfe creates a satisfying array of locations, and even manages some magic tricks with a kitchen that must fall apart and reconstruct itself.

And Mary Poppins must fly, of course, which Ilika makes seem spit-spot, easy as pie, with her perfectly straight carriage and bemused expression. Since Broadway, Bert must also walk on walls and on a ceiling.

And Allen does so. (The effort for Village, though, strains so hard at their resources that it’s almost a shame they have to attempt it. In fact, if there were lower tech, more wink-at-theater ways to accomplish some of the tricks, the show would have lost none of Discuss your opinions with sgncritic@ the fun, but some of the strain.)

Andrews-Katz: You play several instruments including piano, drums and accordion.

Which is your favorite and for what reasons?

Karl: I love playing the drums because they are loud! I want to be in charge of the rhythm. I like the drums and always have.

My life is about timing. Besides, Animal was my favorite character on “The Muppets.”

Andrews-Katz: What was your audition for The Grinch like?

Karl: It was weird, as I’ve never had to do a real audition for American theater before this. My agent called and said he thought I’d be perfect for The Grinch. I walked into the casting office not knowing anyone and saw all these actors that seemed to know each other. I thought to myself, “What am I doing? I have no chance of getting this.” So I just relaxed and let it go as I walked into the office. I put my heart into the audition and they were all laughing their asses off, so that made me relax a little more. I had a fun time with it and got the callback phone call on the way to the airport.

cartoon over and over. It wasn’t until I connected with it in my own way that I found my inner Grinch. There are certain things you have to respect, of course, but then you can make it your own. There’s a fine line.

Andrews-Katz: Is it true this is the only production approved by the estate of Dr. Seuss?

Karl: Yes, it is! We are very true to the book and cartoon. We use the same colors, black and white, pink and red. The green is the Grinch – and he didn’t become green until the cartoon in the 1960s. Being true to the book and character helps me a lot.

Andrews-Katz: If you could play any role – regardless of any limitation – what would it be and why?

Karl: That’s a tough one. There are really two complicated answers - none and everything! I don’t have a dream role, really. I could name any villain character. For some reason, I have always wanted to play the bad guy in a James Bond movie. That has nothing to do with the payments, but it has to do with the Andrews-Katz: With the cartoon being so fact that I hate how bad guys are always played iconic and Jim Carey being so unique, how do stereotypical – bad Russians or whatever. Celebrating 41 Years!

2004 revisited: A great year in cinema leaves plenty to be thankful for It’s Thanksgiving, and in the world of film criticism this holiday is typically that bellwether moment when one realizes it’s time to get end-of-year thoughts in order. With barely a month left on the calendar, now is when Oscar predictions are mulled over and top ten lists are compiled.

In all honesty, as much as we critics like to think we know it all when it comes to the historical impact a film is going to have, the only way to truly know what’s going to happen on that front is to let time pass and see which motion pictures are still being talked about and which ones have fallen off the radar. So last year around Thanksgiving a small group of Seattle critics, I amongst them, decided to look a decade into the rearview mirror and compare our top ten lists made at that time to what they would look like now.

This proved to be a fascinating enterprise (five films dropped out of my original ten for a variety of reasons, four newcomers – there was a tie, I decided against maintaining ties – taking their place), and as such a few of us resolved to make this an annual exercise. And so this Thanksgiving, on the eve of starting to make the attempt to craft a top ten for 2014 I can hopefully be content with, I’m revisiting 2004, looking back to see if the feelings I had about features released to cinemas then are the same ones I hold now.

And what was my 2004 top ten?

1. The Incredibles 2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 3. A Very Long Engagement 4. Dig! / Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (tie) 5. Kill Bill: Vol. 2 6. Before Sunset 7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 8. The Bourne Supremacy / Collateral (tie) 9. Hero / House of Flying Daggers (tie) 10. Bad Education / The Motorcycle Diaries (tie) It’s a good list that I’m largely satisfied with.

Yet there are too many ties, and even though each set of films does go together I should have forced myself to make the tough decision and come to a determination – which one was worthy and which should have just missed the cut.

It should also be noted that, as great as all of these movies are, I’ve admittedly not returned

to a few of them near as frequently as some others that didn’t make it into the first tier.

So what would I change? Quite a bit, especially when you take into account my “no tie” rule, yet all-in-all seven of the films represented would still make my final list. That said, here are the titles I would remove: • A Very Long Engagement – I still say that this whimsical, unabashedly melodramatic WWI era love story is acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s best film to date, but for whatever reason I have trouble revisiting this heartrending love story near as much as I would like. It holds up beautifully, I just think there are other motion pictures released in 2004 I’d place just a tiny bit above it.

• The Bourne Supremacy – As much as I adore this second film in the wildly successful series, at the end of the day I actually prefer The Bourne Ultimatum, and as such this one falls out of the ten, having more to do with my “no ties” rule than it does anything else.

• Dig! – This is a terrific music documentary, director Ondi Timoner’s seven-years-inthe-making chronicle of bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre a fascinating journey to be sure. It just doesn’t hold the same sort of sway over me now as it did at the time of its release, and in all honesty I’d almost forgotten about it before revisiting the doc in preparation for this column.

• Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkaWarner Independent Pictures

ban – Still the best Harry Potter film, still a wonderful fantasy-adventure showcasing future Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón at the height of his powers. Yet all things considered, as great as this one is, as masterful as this third chapter in J.K. Rowling’s sprawling saga might be, it just doesn’t belong in the top ten; I can’t say it any plainer than that.

• Hero – Director Zhang Yimou made two of 2004’s best films, but as amazing as this fantastical epic might be, I admit to preferring the equally visually sumptuous House of Flying Daggers over it. As such, it needs to fall off the list no matter how much it pains me to remove it.

• Kill Bill: Vol. 2 – I love Quentin Tarantino’s ambitious, sprawling B-movie martial arts meets revenge-fueled exploitation epic, but it just isn’t near as fun to watch on its own as its 2003 first chapter is. Magnificent, yes, but it only truly works when taken in concert with Vol. 1, and because of that I can’t in good conscience leave it in 2004’s top ten no matter how much a very large part of me kind of wants to.

• The Motorcycle Diaries – This look at the early days of future revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevera is a remarkable achievement, director Walter Salles’ astonishing drama a devastatingly effective road trip through pain, suffering, sacrifice and redemption that puts a human face on one of the more complex and divisive figures of the 20th century. At the same time, as great as the movie is (and it’s pretty amazing) the re-watch quotient is surprisingly low, thus removing it from the list is somewhat surprisingly easy to do.

Doug: So, a musical about Edgar Allan Poe, right? Seems a bit incongruous. What brought about the inspiration?

Paul: It started about four-plus years ago. Of course, Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most important writers, and I wanted to explore a chapter in his life that is not very well known. A friend who is a writer inspired me to write a musical about it. It is the chapter of Poe’s romance with a Rhode Island poet named Helen Whitman. So that’s how it came about, and it grew as a staged reading and a workshop production, both of which were directed by Corey, and its script has evolved over several years.

Doug: Based on your spring production of The Lisbon Traviata, we fully expect Theatre22 will produce a stellar show despite not having the million dollar budget it takes to get some musicals to the stage in this town. What’s different this time around in terms of logistics?

Corey: Logistically speaking, this is the first time I’ve directed and co-produced my own show. So that’s a level of new intensity. [Chuckles.] It is an incredibly large group of people.

We’ve got 36 people attached. 15 singer actors, 5 musicians, a tech team. It is much much larger. The venue is larger. Everything is larger because it is a musical. And it is a new work, so

rather than concentrating each day in rehearsal solely on what needs to be cleaned or polished, it is a new work evolving, where we’re constantly revising music, cues, harmonies, and script.

[Corey makes a small, elevated laugh somewhere between a titter and a sigh.]

Doug: Where are you rehearsing at now?

Corey: We’re at TPS [Theatre Puget Sound].

Doug: So you are able to put it altogether in one place, and not have it all spread about?

Corey: Luckily, we’ve had the same room for the whole time. So yes.

Doug: Is this a period piece? Is it set in the time of Poe? Paul: Yes, it is set in the 1840s.

Corey: The sets were designed by Robin Macartney; the same one who did Lisbon is doing our set and props. It is more of a minimalistic set. We are focusing a lot more on the music and the actors than the visuals.

Doug: How many acts?

Corey: Two acts and 17 musical numbers.

Paul: There is a lot of underscoring I wrote for the scenes that I scored cinematically with a live orchestra.

Doug: This is going to be a spectacle. I’m just really excited. And also that it is happening within our community. Tell me a little about casting – what that was like casting a musical in Seattle?

Corey: Uuuuhhhhhhm. Well, actually, we precast a good handful of people in Seattle. We knew in our Helen we had really found a woman who could successfully portray the Sarah Helen Whitman character.

And then there were others that we wanted to plug in that we knew could not only act tour-de-force, but also sing it as well. So we did a little bit of pre-casting in that. And then, of course, the actual casting.

In casting calls it was difficult to find a large number of older men. Which is a struggle in this city. These are not male roles in their twenties, they are older male roles. It took a lot of effort. And our Poe was particularly difficult to cast of all. We had been catching plays, and catching musicals, trying hard to find somebody for months and months, and who we ended up landing was somebody we saw at a random show at Hale’s Palladium, a place we usually never go to see an entertainment act. This male singer just happened to come on, and both me and my husband Alber saw it immediately, and said, “Oh my gosh! That’s him! He’s our Poe!” So it was a few months of courting him, and auditioning him, and seeing if it would work out with him. And that’s where we ended up going.

Doug: What’s his name?

Corey: Brian Pucheu. He’s a doll. He’s lovely.

“It is dark, but also romantic. And darkly comic, ultimately tragic,” said playwright Paul Lewis about the play. “He had a very turbulent and harrowing childhood. The things that happened to him really informed his work. So, it has a dark tone to it, but not, I think, unnecessarily dark. I didn’t set out to do a biopic. I don’t like biopics. Never have.

But I wanted to deal with just one segment of his life. But maybe also open up references to his past that would have informed his work.”

Mr. Lewis has written five musicals.

“When we first did the reading in 2011 on Bainbridge, I was so in love with the music, with some of the songs. There are some that, even to this day, I will hear in rehearsal all the time, and still I get chills and a little tear. Some of these songs are just incredibly moving,” said Producer/Director Corey McDaniel. “As I’m seeing this unfold, it is really a story about the hands of fate – about the gears and levers of fate. And it involves two American poets, and through those avenues of telling those stories, we get a glimpse of who Poe was; and why he was like he was or how we think he might have been.”

Doug: I understand that you wanted to write about that story, but what made you decide to do it as a musical?

Paul: I think what drove that decision was the romance – the love affair that this piece centers on. Love affairs always lend themselves to musicals, at least in my mind.

I wanted to not go too far down the path of Poe, the gothic, tragic dark scary character.

And instead look at other aspects of his life.

Doug: You’ve written four musicals before? What’s that like? Do you basically come to a point in a scene and then say, “This is where I want the song to move the story?”

Paul: It is different for every song. I feel like every song has a different narrative or trajectory of its own. Sometimes a song is born out of necessity. Because I have to get from place A to place B in the story. Or because, the classic saying in the musical theatre is that if a character has too many emotions that they can’t speak it anymore, then they sing it. It is an expression of something intense going on with the character. Be it that character’s love, passion or desire, or whatever. So sometimes it occurs very naturally and organically as an outgrowth of the dialogue that’s happening. And sometimes, it is more of a vehicle to move one scene to the next. Each song has its own function and its own place in a musical. So it arrives by different means. There is a lot of rewriting.

For the 17 songs in this musical, I’ve probably written fifty or sixty. There’s so much that gets discarded. Or rewritten, but mostly discarded. Suddenly you realize that it doesn’t fit, and that that melody no matter how lovely or striking, just doesn’t move the story along. Yes, it is a waste of effort, but I tend to recycle a lot of my melodies, so they are always there for something else.

Doug: Is the score still evolving, or is that pretty much pinned down?

Paul: There is a lot of what I call underscoring. We’re having to sync up the music with the actions of the live actors onstage.

We don’t know how that’s going to line up until you do it. So mostly it’s tweaks right now. It’s more, “How long can this particular piece of music go on?” We’re past the point of any major rewritings right now.

Corey: Yes, we’re beyond major rewriting. It is more key changes, octave changes, underscoring, cues. It is a lot of cue work.

Like when someone needs to come in.

Paul: There have been some late line changes. A couple of them were suggested by the actors who are inhabiting their characters so authentically that they say to me and Corey, “You know, I really want him to say this.” And it was usually a great call.

Perhaps it was fate that made this darkly poetic, yet romantically lyrical The Hours of Life find its premier in Seattle in December. The scene, the mood, have already been set by the weather. It was a long star-crossed journey that brought this work to the stage in this, Theatre22’s inaugural season. (The other good news is that Theatre22 has become a guest Artist in Residence at the newly opened 12th Avenue Theatre, with two plays to be produced there in 2015 and slots lined up there through 2016.) Celebrating 41 Years!

Funny Bosses a far from horrible sequel HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 Now playing Ever since they collectively got the notso-bright idea to murder their bosses, best friends Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) have done what they can to walk the straight and narrow. As such, they’re now prepared to step out on their own, become their own bosses, inventing a new toy for the shower they’re positive will sweep the country by storm.

Best of all, one of the country’s largest magazine and Internet distribution companies run by the wildly successful Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz) is putting in an order for 100,000 units, this news allowing them to get their company going, putting them on the path towards financial independence.

Needless to say, things do not work out as planned. Hanson pulls a fast one on the trio, in effect putting them in a half-a-million dollar hole they’re unlikely to be able to climb out of before he takes over their business and leaves all three financially ruined.

With few options, Kurt and Dale strike upon the bright idea to kidnap Rex (Chris Pine), Bert’s petulant, somewhat whiny, easily excitable son and hold him for ransom, Nick going along for the ride even though based on their last criminal enterprise he knows he probably shouldn’t.

Horrible Bosses was something of a minor surprise hit when it was released in the sum-

mer of 2011. The movie wasn’t particularly good, but it did have a healthy handful of laughs; and while most of them were courtesy of the supporting cast (most notably Colin Farrell as the worst boss of the bunch, but Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Spacey got in a few choice licks as well) there was just enough amusing stuff to make the film itself worthy of a look.

But a sequel? Not sure that was really warranted, especially one coming more than three years after the fact. Yet, surprise, surprise, Horrible Bosses 2 is actually a little bit better than its predecessor. Not only does it offer up a few more laughs, it also makes the core group of Nick, Dale and Kurt worth spending some time with, their endearing imperfections much more enchanting than they were the first time around. While not great, I’d be tempted to elevate things to a healthy “good” as far as this sequel is concerned, because while far from perfect I still had a grand old time sitting in the theater watching it all the same.

Bateman and Day are terrific, the latter in particular, while Pine steals scenes left and right as the far too eager and willing kidnapping victim, Rex, having something close to a blast sending up his typically heroic screen persona. Aniston and Spacey both return, each making the most of their screen time with humorous exuberance, while Jamie Foxx is also back, getting a bit more in on the action as artfully unhelpful, yet surprisingly there when he’s needed, MF Jones, his obsession with opening up a Pinkberry store continually making me chuckle.

Miller, to She’s Out of My League, to Hot Tub Time Machine, does a much better job handling all the action as director here than he did spearheading 2012’s Adam Sandler monstrosity That’s My Boy, keeping things energetic and quickly paced throughout. While the screenplay is admittedly a little on the messy side (including Anders, there are three other credited writers) the jokes themselves are pretty much solid across the board, the laughs making up for the majority of the film’s more than obvious narrative shortcomings.

Of which there are plenty, not the least of which is the fact that Waltz, other than delivering a couple of choice lines with sublime relish, is given precious little to do. On top of that, the whole kidnapping subplot, while overall oddly more agreeable than the murderous machinations of the first film,

Sexy private dick Jim Noble (Scott Sell) is hired by Gene (Rob Moretti) to investigate the murder of Justin Jaymes (the terrific Tom Goss).

As Jim probes the suspects, he is seduced, and perhaps in over his head. Out to Kill features a clever twist that will keep viewers intrigued as the crime is solved.

In the Gay thriller The Dark Place, Keegan Dark (Blaise Embry) takes his boyfriend Wil (Timo Descamps) to his mother Celeste’s (Shannon Day) vineyard. Keegan has not seen his mother in years, so he is surprised to discover she has remarried Adrian (Andy Copeland) and that he has a stepbrother, Jake (Sean Paul Lockhart). However, Keegan, who has a form of total recall, doesn’t quite trust the new men in his mother’s life; he suspects something nefarious is going on. As the various plot twists and turns unfold, The Dark Place is enjoyable, even if the film gets a bit ludicrous in the last reel.

Another film with suspense elements is the Israeli drama, Snails in the Rain, an intriguing, if somewhat muddled, story about Boaz (Yoav Reuveni), an extremely attractive linguistics student at Tel Aviv University during a hot summer in 1989. Boaz is receiving anonymous letters from a man who finds him, well, extremely attractive. The film also suggests that Boaz is paranoid, threatened by every man who glances at him, or makes a sexual overtone – intentional or not. Director Yariv Mozer seems so fixated on creating an atmosphere of mystery and doubt that viewers may not understand what is real and what might be imagined.

That said, viewers who are more interested in Reuveni’s chest and body will not have to worry about the plot. Reuveni, a model making his acting debut here, barely does a scene without taking off his shirt, swimming in a pool, taking a shower, hitting the beach, or sweating in the kitchen, bathtub or bedroom.

He is beautiful and doesn’t give a bad performance, but it is hard to sympathize with him being pained at being so admired.

For lovers of Latino cinema, there are a trio of muy caliente queer titles to enjoy.

The Third One is Argentine writer/director Rodrigo Guerrero’s revealing film about a polyamorous relationship. Fede (Emiliano Dionisi) is a cute college student who flirts online with Franco (Nicolás Armengol). He meets Franco and his partner Hernán (Carlos Echevarría) for a very talky dinner in their apartment. But the guys do eventually shut up and fuck, and the trio ends up in bed together – a virtuoso sequence that Guerrero shoots in real time. The emotional and physical affections in The Third One are what make this erotic drama so satisfying.

The sexy Mexican film, Four Moons, by writer-director Sergio Tovar Velarde, is a quartet of stories featuring Gay men grappling with affection and rejection. In one, a pre-teen,

feels almost as if it’s been thrown together on the spot. While the cast is filled with an extraordinary collection of ad libbers, everyone here fitting that description, it would have been nice had they be given something even slightly concrete as a foundation to build all of this criminal silliness upon.

Somehow, someway Horrible Bosses 2 finds a way to meander towards success.

There are signature bits sprinkled throughout, including a glorious gag with a car, a gate and a surprisingly resilient chain-link fence; while the cast continually enliven things to a point I can’t help but smile recollecting on them now. As sequels go, this one improves upon its predecessor in all the ways that matter; and, as Thanksgiving surprises are concerned, this is one effort I’m happily thankful to have had the pleasure to see.

Mauricio (Gabriel Santoyo) becomes aware of his attraction to other boys. In another, a couple, Hugo (Antonio Velázquez) and Andrés (Alejando de la Madrid), cope with Andrés’ infidelity. A third features Joaquín (Alonso Echánove), a married older man who hopes to bed a sexy gigolo, Gilberto (Alejando Belmonte). But the most touching storyline features Fito (Cesar Ramos) and Leo (Gustavo Egelhaaf), two friends who reunite and become lovers, only to have a conflict arise when Leo wants to remain closeted and keep their relationship secret. Ramos gives an incredibly moving performance in the film as a Gay man coming to terms with his same-sex desires.

Another scorching Mexican title is I am Happiness on Earth by Julián Hernández, a filmmaker who eroticizes nude men like no other filmmaker. His camera practically caresses the actors’ bodies in this hypnotic film. This romantic drama boasts magnificent cinematography and highly sensual scenes as it chronicles a love triangle that features Emiliano (Hugo Catalán), a filmmaker, at its apex. Hernández’s distinctive style and uninhibited view of sexual desire (as well as sex itself) envelops viewers. The emotional power of the characters passionately expressing themselves as they experience longing, betrayal, and heartbreak is as palpable as the sexy bodies on display.

Equally pornographic is Christophe Honoré’s 2010 film Man at Bath, recently released on DVD. The film is a provocative investigation of the disintegrating relationship between Emmanuel (beefy French porn star François Sagat) and Omar (Omar Ben Sellem), who is about to leave the Paris suburb of Gennevilliers for a film screening in New York City.

However, Emmanuel forcibly sodomizes him first. Omar insists that Emmanuel must leave their apartment before he returns.

Man at Bath juxtaposes how both partners

respond to this “breakup.” While Emmanuel pays a visit to Robin (Dennis Cooper), and poses nude for him, Omar attends a seminar his actress, Chiara Mastroianni, gives at the School of Visual Arts. Omar then meets and becomes besotted with Dustin (Dustin Degura-Suarez), filming this young man in various locations and in various stages of undress and arousal. Honoré’s film is sexually explicit, with ample nudity – including erections – but it is less about sex, and more about how the lovers each cope with their breakup.

A more tender examination of a “break up” is Mark Thiedeman’s evocative, impressionistic drama, Last Summer. Luke (Samuel Pettit) and Jonah (Sean Rose) are teenage boyfriends in Arkansas. They are separating when Jonah heads off to college in the fall. Thiedeman conveys the boys’ emotions through delicate moments, such as the boys rubbing their sneakers together. Thiedeman employs ambient, atmospheric sounds to heighten the unspoken emotions, and uses light, shadow and reflection to emphasize the elegiac mood. Although experimental in tone, Last Summer is an extraordinary, beautifully realized film.

For something extremely silly, The Gays is a crudely made comedy, full of crude content, and over-the-top antics. Alex Gay (the adorable Mike Russnak) talks about his queer family – Trans Mom (Chris Tanner), Dad (Frank Holliday) and brother Tommy Flip Jorgensen) to a stranger at a West Hollywood bar. This episodic comedy, which features a bloody pussy board game to an Exorcist anal birth scene, has something to offend everyone. The humor stems mostly from wordplay and song parodies and less from “outrageous” behavior such as forcing guys to have sex in a sling or perform blowjobs. While the film is amateur hour, it is also as camp as Christmas.
