THE LISBON TRAVIATA THEATRE22 RICHARD HUGO HOUSE Through June 28 Giant pop-art black-and-white floor-to-ceiling graphics of Maria Callas literally glower over the set of Theatre22’s production of Terrance McNally’s The Lisbon Traviata. Two symmetrically placed panes of her face dominate the back walls, and a split panel flanks the stage, with the left-eye stage-left; the right-eye, stage-right. The result is an instant expectation of highdrama. And, right away we know the production values are top-shelf. Director/Scenic Designer Gerald B. Browning delivers the goods. In the first act, the panels of Callas contrast with the otherwise Victorian fussiness of the character Mendy’s apartment, nicely reflecting the eclecticism of ‘80s Manhattan, a world occupied elsewhere by luminaries such as Warhol, Basquiat and Liza. This apartment is the cocoon that the flamingly flamboyant Mendy, played by Eric Mulholland, seldom needs to leave. Mendy is the Auntie Mame of opera queens, and the world he occupies is contained in the sleeves of opera recordings

Shania Twain performs at Caesar’s Palace
by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer SHANIA TWAIN THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE (LAS VEGAS) June 6
Shania Twain took a 10-year sabbatical from music – performing, recording, writing – to focus entirely on her family priorities, mainly her son Eja, who will turn 13 in a couple of months. But listening to her in concert last weekend at Caesar’s Palace Hotel & Casino, you wouldn’t have known it.
The country superstar drew a near sold out crowd to the Las Vegas property on Friday evening, one of many performances offered inside the 4,300-seat indoor arena this month and next. see Shania page 6
Seattle Pride Idol, presented by T-Mobile, wrapped up its season Sunday night at Neighbours Nightclub with several performances that brought the packed venue to its feet. Twelve finalists from the regular weekly competitions returned to the stage for one last chance to sing for the judges for an attempt to become the 2014 Seattle Pride Idol. Host Olivia LaGarce was joined by the always fabulous Mama Tits, both of whom gave stunning performances, kept everyone entertained throughout the evening. With 8 judges at the table, each contestant took the stage for one
song and one chance to leave a positive impression with the judges and audience. While all the finalists gave amazing performances, women finalists rounded out the top 3. In third place this year, winning $250 and a Microsoft Surface 2 Tablet was Kari Callen with her rendition of Wicked’s “No Good Deed,” which captivated the entire audience. Singing “Gonna Take a Miracle,” second place winner Sherry Eberhardt gave a phenomenal performance that brought the crowd and judges to their feet. see Ruth SOTO page 7
