by Alex Berry will have its world premiere on April 29 at the Cinerama Theatre in Seattle.

Jinkx was the winner of season five of LOGO TV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Based on a series of short films made by Berry and Jerick Hoffer, Jinkx’s boyish half, both before and after the filming of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the film chronicles the path of Jerick/Jinkx from their hometown of

Portland, Oregon, to Cornish College of the Arts here in Seattle and the establishment of their drag career in the clubs and bars of Capitol Hill. Along the way, you’ll hear Jerick/Jinkx tell the story of their journey with the help of family, friends, and co-stars giving their own testimony. For Seattle fans, it will be a special treat as dozens of familiar faces will appear in the film which also features “Seattle” as a major character in the story, as showcased by the gorgeous night time camera work of director Alex Berry.”

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer In a film-loving city like Seattle, it probably won’t come as a shock to anyone that the Langston Hughes African-American Film Festival (LHAAFF) is turning 12.

Same time, its growth over these past dozen years is still extraordinary, and what started as a small showcase for Black film and Black filmmakers from across the globe has blossomed into a nine day event the Emerald City has wholeheartedly embraced.

Arguably featuring its most ambitious

slate of narrative features, documentaries and shorts in its entire history, LHAAFF is poised to take off as it never has before.

With a plethora of guests scheduled to attend, filled with workshops and events sure to educate, fascinate and delight attendees of all races, ages and genders, it’s virtually guaranteed there’s something for everyone scheduled to screen at some point during the festival.

Seattle breakout star Allen Stone should definitely be on your radar

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer I made a big mistake before listening to Allen Stone. I categorized him before hearing what his music actually sounded like. In fact, I miscategorized him. I was convinced by his appearance that his sound would be reminiscent of the Fleet Foxes, melodic and thoughtfully written folk songs that capture the natural scenery and simplicity of living in the Northwest. Wrong! This guy is funky, groovy, soulful, and bluesy; a complete opposite of what I expected. His new album, Radius, his first recording on a major label, made me want to shake my ass and clap my hands, and it made me want to watch “Soul Train” and eat hush puppies. There’s really good energy on this album, and most of the tracks, such as “Perfect World,” “Freezer Burn” and “Freedom,” are up-tempo and easily danceable.

Stone, who divides his personal time between Seattle and a cabin near his hometown of Chewelah, has performed on “Ellen” and collaborated with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, aside from jamming at homegrown festivals, Bumbershoot and Sasquatch. To introduce local fans to Radius, hitting music stores on May 26, the 28 yearold artist will play 5 concerts at 5 separate venues in a weeklong period, April 13 at The Triple Door, April 14 at Nectar Lounge, April 16 at The Crocodile, April 17 at Neumos, and April 18 at the Paramount Theatre.

By phone, I checked in with Stone as he was about to shoot a video for an upcoming single. Here’s what this really funky dude shared with me inside The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: Is it all original material on the new album, Radius, or have some of these songs been released on previous records?

Allen Stone: Yeah, this is all original brand new material. About 80% of the re-

cord I co-wrote with other writers, mainly this guy Magnus Tingsek out of Sweden, and then a couple of other writers that wrote like three or four songs.

Rodriguez: Was it recorded in Seattle?

Stone: The majority of it was recorded in Sweden, actually. I really didn’t do any sessions in Seattle. I have so many friends and family in Seattle that it seems like when I’m there I can’t get any work done (laughs).

I end up lollygagging and going out for beers, drinking too much, and hanging out with my best friend. I purposely got outside Seattle, so that I would focus on getting my record done.

Rodriguez: Your music is so funky and soulful, very different than what I expected. Is this the kind of music you’ve always played?

Stone: Yeah, the last record was a little more soul review, but it’s always been funk, R&B, and soul ever since I picked up a guitar. I guess when I picked up a guitar it was more of that James Taylor, Ray LaMontagne sort of thing, but the last two projects I put out were very heavily funk and soul.

Rodriguez: “Freedom” really caught my ear. Tell me about this song.

Stone: I wrote “Freedom” after, what I had thought, [I’d] already finished the record. I went to Sweden and worked with Mr. Tingsek, who I’ve been a huge fan of forever. We wrote probably 25 songs and came back to the label, and, as can be the difficulty in working with major record labels, they’re like, “We don’t really hear a single yet.” So, I said, “Well, alright, let me take another crack at it.” It was upsetting, obviously, because you feel like in your mind you’ve accomplished something and having someone tell you that you haven’t, especially from an artistic standpoint, it can be a little bit trying and painful. But I went back into the studio and wrote “Perfect World,” which is the first song on the record, and “Freedom.” Those were the two songs we wrote in those sessions and the label’s like, “Alright, you did it buddy, we can release the record!” I sort of applied this motto to my life, as of recent, of no resistance. So often I would get stressed out about specific

stuff, like my art, my music, my shows, and I had to come to an understanding that I’m not saving lives; this isn’t brain surgery. I’m writing songs that mean something to me, and releasing them out into the world and hoping that these songs will matter to anybody. So, I evolved a lot through that song, to slowly be free of all the unnecessary stresses that we apply to our lives.

Rodriguez: You’ll be performing 5 shows at 5 different venues coming up in Seattle. Will each concert be different, aside from the venue – set list, backup band, etc?

Stone: There will definitely be a different set list, at least a different combination of songs. When you’re coming out with a new record, you’re obviously wanting to play a lot of it. But every night is going to have a different set list, different vibe; the venues won’t be too different. I felt like the venues needed to stay the same to reflect the time and place in my career that I played those venues. Going back to The Triple Door and the Nectar (Lounge) was intentional to give fans the opportunity to see me in a specific platform again. I haven’t really played smaller venues in Seattle for a minute; I think my last two were Chateau Ste. Michelle, which there was close to 4,000 people there, and then the Paramount, which is about 3,000 people. I just wanted to get back in the small rooms and feel the energy in Seattle in those tiny little places; when you go in those small rooms, it’s concentrated, only people in those small rooms want to be there. You just don’t crowd into the Nectar Lounge if you don’t want to be there.

Rodriguez: What is your favorite coffee or coffee shop in Seattle?

Stone: I used to live right down the street from Zoka in Seattle. I love that place. The girls in there are really sweet and the coffee is killer.

Rodriguez: In Tangletown?

Stone: In Tangletown, yeah. That place is my jam in Seattle. And, when I stay at the cabin – and the cabin is about 10 miles outside of a little town called Chewelah that I see stone page 5

Ariana Grande is bringing her everything to Seattle

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer ARIANA GRANDE KEY ARENA April 14 This is the time when many 21 year-olds begin preparing for college finals and applying for summer internships. But not Ariana Grande. This barely legal, native Floridian is six weeks into a world tour, performing to thousands of screaming fans in large sports arenas across North America, Europe, and Asia. Earlier in the week, she appeared on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” as a guest judge, assisting Mama Ru narrow the field of contestants down to eight.

Grande, who nabbed two Grammy nominations in December, one for her sophomore album My Everything and another for an all-female collaboration with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J (“Bang Bang”), is often referred to as the new or next Mariah Carey because of her powerful four-octave vocal range and fashion style – mini skirts, high heels, low-cut dresses. Also, both women shot to music superstardom around the same age, though Grande had already established a name for herself as a stage and television actress, most noticeably on Nickelodeon’s teen sitcom “Victorious,” which completed a four season run in 2013. My Everything, meanwhile, has produced four hit singles, “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea), “Break Free” (featuring Zedd), “Love Me Harder” (featuring The Weeknd), and “One Last Time.” I assume all of these songs will be performed live at Key Arena, when the pop princess brings “The Honeymoon Tour” to Seattle on April 14.

continued from page 4 grew up in as a kid; it’s like 1200 people, it’s tiny – but there’s a coffee shop there and it makes killer coffee; it’s called Paul’s (A Coffee Bar). I go there every morning when I’m in Chewelah. But if I’m in Seattle, I’m at Zoka, or Caffe Vita. I love Caffe Vita, too.

Rodriguez: And, what about bars?

Stone: I go to the Alibi Room, down by the waterfront. But I also used to frequent the Seamonster, in Wallingford. I kind of lived down the street from it, and there’s always funky good music blasting at the Seamonster. I frequent that a lot, and I also have a bunch of friends that work at The Crocodile; I’ve been there quite a bit, too.

Rodriguez: Where do you buy the majority of your threads?

Stone: (laughs) To be totally honest, they’re given to me by different sources.

But I shop a lot at second hand and vintage stores across the country. I don’t have too many readily available shopping centers when I’m out at the cabin. Then again, I get my socks at Target and underwear at Costco. (laughs) Rodriguez: Have you had any personal experiences or close alliances with the LGBT community – good friends, volunteer work, fundraising performances?

Stone: I haven’t done any specific charity work with the LGBT community yet, or done anything musically with the LGBT community. But obviously I have a lot of friends and loved ones whose life-

a huge LGBT community supporter, partly because her brother Frankie is openly Gay. But she’s also been outspoken about leaving the Catholic church due to its opposition of same-sex marriage and its outdated practices. She and Frankie have now turned to Kabbalah. “Break Your Heart Back,” a track from her platinum-selling album, is about a guy who dumps his girlfriend for another guy, a situation she’s 99.9 percent sure has

I’ve been bumping that since I was in high school. I have all the Maroon 5 records on there; that’s probably something most people wouldn’t think of me having, but I love them. I got all of their records; I’m really a big fan of their first two records and the most recent stuff I’m not into as much, but the first two records I love.

Rodriguez: I think you would kill a cover of “Animals,” though.

Stone: (laughs) We could probably find a way to do that, but I’m not sure I want to.

When I cover songs, I always want to cover something people wouldn’t expect. The next song I cover will probably be a country song, or something that I can funk out and make cool.

Rodriguez: Hmmm.... you could either do “Jesus, Take the Wheel” or maybe “All About That Bass.”

Among the 150 passengers who lost their lives in the tragic crash of Germanwings 4U 9525 was Greig Friday, a 29 yearold Australian who was an active member of his local LGBT community. Friday, traveling with his mother Carol on March 24 when the flight was steered into the foothills of the French Alps, was a founding member of the Gay and Lesbian Engineers at Monash (GLEAM) Club and served as Queer Officer of the Monash Student Association (MSA), a college campus organization, in 2009. MSA President Sinead Colee noted in an interview with The Herald Sun, a Melbourne-based news publication, that Friday fought for equal rights at the university and to a broader community. “His contributions to the movement will not be forgotten,” she stated. The association mourn-

Construction began this week on The Museum of Flight’s Aviation Pavilion, a structure that will house more than 20 commercial and military aircraft when completed. The Pavilion is expected to be completed in the spring of 2016. The just-restored Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet and recently added 787 Dreamliner, along with Air Force One, Concorde and B-17, B-29 and B-47 bombers will all be moved to the new building, giving museum visitors all-seasons access to view these retired airplanes. Currently, each of these planes is parked outdoors and occasionally cannot be viewed due to closures because of weather conditions. The Aviation Pavilion is costing an estimated $31 million, entirely funded by private donations, and will cover an area larger than two football fields with a roof sloping from a height of 90 feet down to 55 feet. the City of Seattle commemorates the event with Monster Fest, where people dress in costume and Trevor can emerge and mingle among them without worry or concern.

When Trevor’s loneliness finally gets the better of him, he decides to seek out companionship on Grindr, a Gay dating/social application for modern smart phones.

There he meets Cary, another lonely soul trying to make a connection. They decide to go out to The Crocodile Club and meet Siren, a rock singer whose voice holds power over both man and lizard. While Trevor is drawn to the singer’s dark vocals, she continues her secret plans, which involves the taking of Trevor’s blood.

There are only three people in the musical and they double as their own orchestra, much in the style of Broadway’s John Doyle (Sweeney Todd, Company, Road Show). The actors slide into their orchestral parts easily and the transition is done well, quickly becoming part of the show’s charm. William A. Williams plays Cary, a quirky kind of guy who plays the guitar and wants to make a friend. His awkwardness comes through and adds to the character’s charm, allowing the audience to become endeared to the man’s goofy appeal. Kirsten Delohr Helland plays Siren, the dark rock singer whose voice is literally magic; and the same applies to the real-life singer.

Kirsten’s voice is strong, and wraps itself

around the lyrics with a warm darkness.

She knows how to use her instrument and does so with a particular confidence and subtle seething.

The truth of the matter is that this show belongs to Justin Huertas. Not only has he written and composed the musical, but also goes on to playing the cello and taking the lead role of Trevor, the Lizard Boy. It is his show and he knows how to bring out the awkwardness and bashful behavior or the isolated creature. His voice suits the part and the audience easily cheers on Lizard Boy wanting him to find his heart’s desire.

Lizard Boy the musical is an enjoyable show. It’s simplistic and fun, and the music (although not overly hummable) is well written and promotes the show along, as good composition should in a musical. The familiar Seattle icons that are mentioned (Dick’s Drive-In, Crocodile Club, and even Jinkx Monsoon) throughout makes the average citizen of the Emerald City smile with recognition. Once the audience accepts that the storyline should be viewed as a comic book, they can overlook the clichés that some of the subplots promote, and surrender to enjoying the performance.

In shapeshifter, performance artist Louis Gervais pushes himself and his cast of characters to the limits of physical and emotional capacity. Outrageous understudies (carnival worker Randy McCrae and Iphelia, a hideously beautiful fairy godmother) take on Gervais’ opening act and launch the evening into unpredictable directions. Each character shining and stumbling through an improvisational obstacle course.

Gervais’ theatre works are consistently well-crafted, high-spirited affairs. In shapeshifter, Gervais unpacks a lifetime of skills as a dancer, choreographer and writer with the added ingredients of gender bending, commedia dell arte mask work and improvisation. The combined effect is likely to startle as well as amuse.

Charming Young a middle-aged coming of age adventure

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer WHILE WE’RE YOUNG Now playing New York based documentarian Josh (Ben Stiller) has been working on his latest effort for the past decade, his film so far away from completion his longtime editor Tim (Matthew Maher) is starting to doubt it will ever be finished. His wife Cornelia (Naomi Watts), an acclaimed producer in her own right, has been spinning her wheels of late, her legendary award-winning filmmaker father Leslie Brietbart (Charles Grodin) currently between projects for her to

shepherd, thus leaving her with not a heck of a lot to do.

While teaching a class at NYU, Josh is approached by upstart twenty-something Jamie (Adam Driver) and his free-spirited girlfriend Darby (Amanda Seyfried), both claiming to be big fans of his first film released to vociferous acclaim and little public support ten years prior. Feeling an odd kinship with the pair, he and Cornelia see their middle-aged malaise somewhat alleviated by spending time with this young, energetic couple eager to make their mark upon the world. But when Josh starts to suspect all isn’t as it appears in regards to Jamie all his energy and enthusiasm begins to drift towards paranoia and pessimism,

the effect these realizations have upon him forcing a kind of potent soul searching he wasn’t prepared to face.

The main thematic plot points and revelations hiding within writer/director Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young aren’t going to come as a big surprise to anyone familiar with his work. Much like Greenberg, France Ha and The Squid and the Whale, this is another meditation on relationships, life, family and aspiration that isn’t afraid of making some pretty unappetizing statements as far as the human condition is concerned. It strips its characters bare leaving them naked both to the world and to themselves, forcing them to reassess their lives and their choices in ways that aren’t upbeat.

As far as Baumbach is concerned, the movie is as fearless as anything he’s made up until now, making it worthy of attention for that reason alone.

Yet, in many ways the film is also the lightest, maybe even frothiest he’s ever directed. As dark as some of the territory being mined might be, that doesn’t mean Baumbach isn’t above letting his exceedingly talented cast cut a little loose and have some fun. There are so many moments of sheer blissful enthusiasm and energy the effect it had upon me was infectious, the ways in which Josh and Cornelia initially respond to Jamie and Darby inspiring. Stiller and Watts dig into their respective characters with fervent, three-dimensional gusto, allowing each part of their respective journeys to resonate and matter in ways that are

honestly profound and refreshingly free of artifice.

I wish the film could maintain its wit, its sense of humor and, most importantly, its intelligence all the way through to the end. Sadly, this just isn’t so, Baumbach sermonizing a little more than normal, allowing Josh to express things far more bluntly, and with a little too much melodramatic flourish, than is comfortable. There’s some speechifying, all of it coming during a celebratory dinner for Leslie, everything leading to a punchline that, while perfectly delivered by Grodin with sarcastic, sideways candor, is far too obvious and unsurprising to hit home with anything approaching authority.

But the last moments, the final ones between Josh and Cornelia, the way Stiller and Watts relate to one another and come to terms with everything they have learned, that’s beautiful, Baumbach righting the ship right when it mattered most, leaving me far more satisfied than I initially thought possible. On top of that, Driver is a deliciously Machiavellian foil, so charmingly duplicitous it’s hard not to feel more than a little taken aback when his snake oil salesman’s scales start to materialize.

While We’re Young might not showcase the director at his best, but that doesn’t make it any less worthwhile, the final destination a worthwhile venture even if some of the stops along the way aren’t worth visiting.

The fact the Fast and Furious franchise has reached its seventh installment, the idea that we’re even still talking about former street racer and family-centric criminal Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his continuing bromance with former F.B.I. agent Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), all of it is rather unbelievable. I mean, as has been repeated over and over and over again now, the initial chapters weren’t anything more than glorified B-grade genre pictures with no interest in being anything more, taking few chances and avoiding risk as they followed their low rent templates to their natural conclusions.

All that changed with the arrival of Fast & Furious in 2009. Bringing Diesel and Walker back into the fold together for the first time since the 2001 original, assembling an ethnically diverse cast culled from cast members who had appeared in all three of the previous features, director Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan reshaped things into some multicultural Ocean’s 11 meets Mission: Impossible wonderland where all things were suddenly possible.

They created a Bugs Bunny versus Road Runner milieu that was as silly as it was

intoxicating, upping the ante as far as the vehicular fireworks were concerned, while also at the same time keeping Toretto and O’Conner at the center of things, the evolution of their friendship the anchor around which everything else revolved.

The subsequent two adventures, 2011’s Fast Five and 2013’s Fast & Furious 6, only solidified this dynamic, Lin and Morgan manufacturing a relatively odd, thoroughly engrossing trilogy that saw our antiheroes blossom into their own version of the Justice League, going from the wrong side of the law to crusaders for justice, called in to do battle with the forces of evil when law enforcement’s hands were tied and all other options weren’t available. Dwayne Johnson and Cal Gadot were added to the mix, while Diesel, Walker and the rest of their gang (including Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Sung Kang) continued to do what they do best, keeping the concept of family and togetherness sacrosanct every step of the way.

Furious 7 changes things up considerably, Walker’s tragic death in a car accident before filming had ended obviously being the biggest item. Additionally, while Morgan remains, Lin has departed (he’s just started production on Star Trek 3), Saw and The Conjuring filmmaker James Wan taking up the directorial reins for this goaround. last chapter (as well as, in a roundabout way, the events of The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift), Gadot and Kang also do not return, their absence a major reason Toretto, O’Conner and their gang spring back into action.

Not that the basic through line is utter simplicity itself. Cribbing a bit from Die Hard with a Vengeance, the group’s peaceful Los Angeles retirement is short-lived when former British assassin Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) comes calling, vengeance on his mind considering the team was responsible for putting his little brother Owen (Luke Evans) in the hospital on life support. Not able to turn to law enforcement superman Hobbs (Johnson) for help, they instead find themselves being aided by a secretive government agent calling himself Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell). He’ll give Toretto and O’Conner the tools they need to hunt down Shaw if they and their team assist him in turn, the ghostly spy needing them to rescue a kidnapped hacker named Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) from international arms dealer and terrorist Jakande (Djimon Hounsou).

From there things literally fly in a multitude of directions, Dominic and Brian parachuting cars out of a cargo plane, vaulting them between gigantic Abu Dhabi skyscrapers and launching them off the side of cliffs as if they were boulders. People hang off the side of busses, battle military drones with ambulances and get into a variety of chop-socky fist fights Jackie Chan would stand up and cheer. A variety of newcomers are introduced (including UFC champion Ronda Rousey, Thai martial arts superstar Tony Jaa and Australian rapper Iggy Azalea), while Tokyo Drift principal Lucas Black returns to solidify the connective tissue between part three in the series and all the films that have come after it. The laws of physics are destroyed while characters continue to spout melodramatic platitudes about family and togetherness the series has in its own unapologetic way become celebrated for.

It’s needlessly convoluted, and it’s impossible to get away from the thought Morgan is using his scenario constructed here to plant the seeds for forthcoming chapters.

Pretty much all of the stuff dealing with Jakande, his murderous henchmen and his rather nondescript plans to utilize Ramsey’s cybernetic invention is nothing more than a massive red herring, and as threats go, he’s about as limp a one as has been found in a Fast and the Furious film up until now. The volume of destruction also approaches near Man of Steel levels of queasy uncomfortableness, what Toretto and O’Conner end up doing to downtown Los Angeles borderline unconscionable.

I also admit to being uncertain as to where things go next. Not because there aren’t obstacles remaining for Toretto and his team to overcome – there most assuredly are – but more because I don’t know how resonant all of this is going to be without Walker. What Furious 7 clearly shows is that his Brian O’Conner has been this series’ heart and soul long before we probably realized it, his evolution from lawman to antihero to brother to husband to father the one that has given things their emotional kick. While Wan and company send him off into the sunset with gloriously subtle, tearfully authentic sensitivity (he’s more or less “retired,” sent off to live with Brewster in peace), with him no longer part of the ensemble, subsequent films are going to have to work overtime to make up for his absence.

Yet Furious 7, in almost all the ways that matter, is every bit as entertaining as the three features that have preceded it.

The film continues to give all of the actors something to do (the fight between Rodriguez and Rousey, as well as the two between Walker and Jaa, are spectacular), the byplay between members of the ensemble as unforced and as organic as ever. Wan shows himself to be a strong action director, staging scenes of mayhem and madness that are every bit as fantastic and as eye-popping as anything offered up to this point. This seventh chapter is a hoot and while it’s offering up more of the same, it’s doing so in spectacular fashion, and in the end I seriously doubt anyone who’s enjoyed the last three will head home afterwards dissatisfied.

I had the pleasure of engaging in a brief email back-and-forth with the local writer, director, actress and activist earlier this week. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation: Sara Michelle Fetters: The Langston Hughes African-American Film Festival turns twelve this year. What does this anniversary mean to you? Can you believe it’s been a dozen years at this point?

Jacqueline Moscou: It is hard to believe and very rewarding. It means that the film festival resonates with the public and the filmmakers who participate.

Sara Michelle Fetters: This feels, in many ways, to be one of the more ambitious, multifaceted slates of programs and films for the festival (at least that I’ve seen) so far. What’s important to you when putting the schedule together? What is it that you and your team of programmers are looking for?

Jacqueline Moscou: The core value of the festival is to present the many facets and voices that exist within the Black Cultural experience globally. We also look to build relationships with filmmakers. It is important to us that filmmakers feel they have a home and a platform for their work. This is where we began with Ava DuVernay, when we screened her first feature documentary ten years ago and now she is the first African American female to be nominated as a Director for the Golden Globe [for Selma].

On the same platform we work with first-time Directors like Amen Gibreab who we have encouraged and given opportunities to over the past four years that have fueled his passion for filmmaking. Now he is screening his first documentary with us, Horeta: The Journey Beyond Culture. He has had the benefit of other filmmakers critiquing his work and helping him learn the craft. We look forward to seeing where this takes him.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Talk to me a little about the opening night film, The Ground on Which I Stand. What made it stand out? Why was this the perfect film to open the festival this year?

Jacqueline Moscou: The festival strives to build community across the aisles of the theater and neighborhood. Wherever the opportunity arises we showcase who and what exists in our own back yard. August Wilson is not only a national treasure, he was a local treasure. The Ground on Which I Stand is the perfect film because August Wilson chronicled ten decades of African American life. He was unapologetic about Black Life being important and American. His film sets the tone for what the festival is all about. The poster art this year is a Black Power fist, with the words, “representation,” “presentation” and “identity.” August Wilson embodied it all.

The festival is also not a static event of just viewing films either. We build programming around the films to add value and relevance. For this film, we will have two local winners of the national August Wilson Monologue Competition (a competition for high school students) perform live.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Ladies Night is back this year. Why bring it back? What has made this evening so successful?

Jacqueline Moscou: As a woman, honoring ourselves and having fun makes the world a better place. Women have traditionally been the backbone of movements, churches and cultural traditions. They attend the festival in large numbers and this is for them.

Sara Michelle Fetters: You have so

many diverse community sponsors and beneficiaries. Seattle Rep Theatre, the Fred Hutch HIV Vaccine Trial Unit, BABES, Neighborhood House, CFAR, so many more.

Why is this important? What drives you to keep expanding the outreach, bringing more organizations from across the Seattle and Pacific NW communities into the Langston Hughes fold?

Jacqueline Moscou: The performing arts is one of the few arenas left that bring people together in the flesh. With the preponderance of online entertainment, shopping, education and work, it is a serious responsibility for Cultural workers to build bridges of communication with people from all walks of life.

The diverse communities involved in the festival also affirm the success the festival is having showcasing the tremendous diversity of our stories and in breaking down the stereotype that Black programming is just for Black people. We all live in this world together.

Sara Michelle Fetters: You’re an accomplished actress, director and writer and as such I imagine putting together this festival each year has to be an incredibly rewarding and highly personal experience.

What keeps bringing you back? What energizes you?

Jacqueline Moscou: The energy and drive people have to express themselves really inspires me. If you look at TV, the newspapers, magazines, etc. you can pull your hair out seeing the negative images that are attributed to Black people. When you see the 100th Black male killed by a cop, the economic disparity for Black people, you could just give up. But the film festival exposes you to the rainbow of the human mind and reminds you, “Oh, by the way, you are not only included in the rainbow, you help make it.”

I love, working with the volunteers and the festival team and communities. I am very fortunate to have been able to live my life in the arts. I am continually learning, being challenged, inspired and called to action.

Sara Michelle Fetters: This year’s slate of LGBT-themed shorts and films is intriguing, to say the least. What drew you to these films? What can you tell everyone about them?

Jacqueline Moscou: Once again, the films are very diverse. Our two feature length films, Positively Beautiful and We Came to Sweat appear to be two different topics and films. One is about women living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, [the other] about the oldest Gay Black Lounge in New York. However, the heart of each film is about resistance and activism. They reflect the spirit of people to survive and willingness to fight to keep what is important. Even if you don’t win or achieve the goal, you have placed your name on the rolls of humanity, saying, “I count.”

This festival is all about showing films that you won’t see in mainstream America.

Films that show Black people not as victims but as survivors. These films provide options and inspiration that ordinary citizens can become extraordinary activists in the struggle against stigma, fear and displacement. Gonna Sip That Sip, Hit that Dip documents the emerging Queer-HipHop Movement, while And Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a comedic take on the Sidney Poitier film but this time with a traditional Nigerian-American family.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What is the

state of African American film right now?

What has inspired you? What has shocked you?

Jacqueline Moscou: The technology has made filmmaking more affordable and accessible to many more people and I am seeing a plethora of films and content coming from African Americans. With YouTube, Netflix, the web and Cable we are seeing many more avenues for filmmakers to distribute their films and the independent Black film scene is booming. As I said earlier, I am inspired by how many people are actually making films. What continues to shock me is we have made great progress on the artistic side – we have Black workers throughout all the arenas in filmmaking – and yet economically, White mainstream film dollars remain a paltry percentage of the pie. Dealing with these economic disparities, there’s still a long way to go.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Why are festivals like this so important? Why do they still matter?

Jacqueline Moscou: Sharing our specific stories is where we find our mutual universalities. Societies are never remembered by the policies that were written; always it is the Culture, the Art. It is a fundamental human drive to express oneself and a fundamental human need to be loved. It may sound corny, but [we] share ourselves through art to be heard, and being heard is necessary to feel love and extend love.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Personally, what can’t you wait for audiences to discover and experience during this year’s festival?

Jacqueline Moscou: I am so excited about watching people see some of the documentaries, from August Wilson to The African American climbers of Mt. Denali in American Ascent, to Discovering Dave about a slave who was a master potter and wrote on his pottery as his form of resistance. I am also thrilled at the number of attending filmmakers who will be joining us this year. I want everyone to come to the filmmaker’s brunch and eat and hear a discussion on the state of Black Independent film.

I am also excited that we have so many women filmmakers in the festival this year.

That is not always the case. I am excited about the family films we have, a series of great shorts that young people and families can attend and one film, On Fathers, Sons and Love, showing how love is passed on from men, too. I am passionate about each film session; we have something for everyone because that’s what it is to be human.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What’s next on the agenda for the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute?

Jacqueline Moscou: There is always something happening at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Next on our producing end is our annual Summer Musical, which this year will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves: Each One Teach One. Sara Michelle Fetters: Where do you

see the festival going from here?

Jacqueline Moscou: The reputation of the festival continues to grow and I would love to expand on how we nurture filmmakers here in the NW with workshops and seminars year round.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Any last thoughts you’d love to impart before the festival begins?

Jacqueline Moscou: I never miss an opportunity to express that a festival is meant to be digested as a whole as one’s time allows. It is not one film at a time. It is a journey through nine days that takes you around the world and back home again. The best way to experience the festival is to buy a pass and plan to see as many films and meet as many filmmakers and neighbors as possible.

Langston Hughes African-American Film Festival is a major season program of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Beginning as a weekend series, LHAAFF has expanded over the past 12 years to include nine days of film screenings, workshops, filmmaker events and community celebrations renowned for presenting positive, provocative and penetrating independent films created by emerging and established filmmakers. Films are selected by panel and will include contemporary and vintage offerings, as well as local, national and international filmmakers. The festival will feature panel discussions, readings, and audience “talk-backs” with filmmakers, industry professionals and community leaders. LHPAI and its LHAAFF is a founding member of the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement. Anchored by the passion and prowess of founding African-American film festivals, AFFRM empowers Black independent filmmakers with simultaneous theatrical distribution in multiple markets.
