by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The beautiful musical star, Megan Hilty, locally-grown talent and now gaining increasing fame in television (SMASH, Sean Saves the World) and movies (Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return), is performing with our own Seattle Men’s Chorus for the second time. Hilty and the SMC will do a concert at McCaw Hall on Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30, entirely focused on the great composer/ writer Stephen Schwartz and his songs.

Hilty has been incredibly busy, lately, even though her latest network television show (Sean Saves the World) has been cancelled. She put out her first album, It Happens All the Time. She’s doing the voiceover for the China Princess in Legends of Oz. The movie’s website describes her character as: “the diminutive high ruler of China County, the most eligible bachelorette in all the land, and nowhere near as fragile as you might think.” She joined the second season of what looks like a hilarious web series: It Could Be Worse – http:// itcouldbeworse.tv/.

ArtsWest presents an accomplished production of Wendy Wasserstein’s Third

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THIRD ARTSWEST Through March 22 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein died far too early (of cancer when she was 55 years old). Third was her last play, which

played Off-Broadway in 2005, just before her death. It is now performing at ArtsWest with a tight cast of five, directed by actor/ director Peggy Gannon.

Wasserstein focused resolutely, sometimes, on women’s issues and women’s voices, as she dissected and illuminated specific time periods that encompassed women’s collective rise to bang against the glass ceilings and find their voices. However, she did not neglect the classics, and in Third, her theme is King Lear.

Laurie Jameson (a vigorous, take-charge, and accomplished Marty Mukhalian) is at the peak of her career, having helped generate change and awareness of women’s issues and political power at a select, small Eastern university. She lectures on literature from a feminist perspective. As the play opens, Professor Jameson lectures the audience on King Lear.

A young man, Woodson Bull III (a convincing, earnest Mark Tyler Miller), presents a paper with his analysis of Lear.

However, he is at the school as a wrestler, with dreams of becoming a sports agent.

Given his name, legacy number (“the Third”), “jock” status, and white male privilege, Jameson profiles him and decides he doesn’t have the intellect or capacity to have written the analysis himself and accuses him of plagiarism.

The play can be looked at as a metaphor for Shakespeare’s King Lear itself. Professor Jameson loses everything she’s worked for after mistaking Third’s honest opinion as stolen analysis, just as King Lear loses everything after rejecting his honest daughter’s expression of love.

It can also be viewed as what happens when an outsider struggles so long and hard to become an insider that she forgets to be open to another’s viewpoint. So she becomes just exactly like those she supplanted in the first place, who judged her, as a woman, insufficiently intelligent or accomplished to be the professor she aspired to be at the beginning of her career.

Jameson’s portrayal is softened, enhanced, and explained by interactions with three key people: her daughter Emily (Kacey Shiflet), her dementia-increasing

father Jack (Bill Higham), and her colleague Nancy (Kate Witt), who is battling cancer. Each of these strong performances and wonderful scene dialogues reveal who Jameson could be, if she’d let herself, with Third. As we witness her compassion, her trials as a daughter, her difficulties as a mother of a grown child and a friend to a suffering colleague, we see what she could offer Third as a mentor and teacher, and the tragic blinds she willfully keeps on her eyes.

This may sound like a tragedy, ala King Lear, but it’s far from that! It’s an absorbing, thoughtful play with loads of ideas and ways of examining what Wasserstein is saying. There are funny moments, wry moments, and especially heart-breaking moments where Mukhalian and Higham can move you to tears.

Gannon’s vision of Third is spare. Burton Yuen’s set design has a cloud-strewn backdrop and stately windows hung from the ceiling, implying the grandeur of the college.

Costuming by Anastasia Armes is simple, yet effective. Lighting by Tristan Roberson is muted and subtle. Sound design and song choices by Johanna Melamed root the play in 2003. The simplicity sets off the complex clash of ideas nicely.

It’s a terrific opportunity to have a Wasserstein play on Seattle stage again. Third proves her power to ignite controversy, discussion, changing perspectives, and even an opportunity to see where feminism might have gone off the rails for some people.

Taproot’s Pretty Fire

Taproot’s new black box theater space is getting some inaugural productions and ramping up their workload around there. This month’s production is Pretty Fire, originally written and performed by the amazing Charlayne Woodard, who is a past-master at telling stories alone on stage. Ms. Woodard has performed in Seattle, often at Seattle Repertory Theatre, in the past. If she comes to Seattle again, please make sure you do everything you can to see her work in person.

But in this production Taproot is providing a real treat by inviting the amazing Ms. Tracy Michelle Hughes to perform the piece. Hughes has performed the piece before, some years ago in Los Angeles, so she brings a familiarity to it that is helpful to the overall effect. Her vigor and commitment to the work is completely submersible into the story at hand, and she makes it her own.

This story begins with a description of Charlayne Woodard’s birth as a preemie whose tenacity becomes part of what makes her the unique person she is. The large, involved family and, in particular, the bossy, imperious, and loving Grandmother who holds everyone together, provides the at-

mosphere that Woodard grew up with.

Woodard’s play is not shy about exposing racism, poverty, Jim Crow, political upheaval, and other difficulties of her life. But she is able to do so with a personal reference point that makes it more powerful and identifiable.

She also writes about fun and enjoyable moments in family life and entwines her family’s religious routines and beliefs, as well. In this piece, the focus is on how she developed her love of performing and how she came to be thrust on the stage in the first place. A cheeky description of Grandma’s dying wish creates a clear understanding of how young children are manipulated, sometimes for their own good, into trying things they find they love.

Hughes’ performance is heart-warming and touching as she performs with only a bench and flowing, easy-to-move clothing and a versatile scarf. Director Nathan Jeffrey provides the rest of what is needed and weaves together the great sound design by Jacob Yarborough, and lighting from Roberta Russell into a seamless production.

Pretty Fire is a proven piece of writing with a talented performer. It is a beautiful and moving evening of theater. It deserves to be seen.

It’s used for major roles that you need that extra insurance on. A lot of times Elphaba would go on in the middle of the first act.

Whoever is playing Elphaba would realize that she couldn’t make it through [the second act’s song] “Defying Gravity” and they would start getting the standby ready. The person playing the role would walk off stage in a scene and the standby would walk on in the next scene…. Then during intermission, they would announce the casting change.”

So, that day, Megan had about two hours’ notice. SGN imagined that she would have been terrified. “I’m always nervous about everything,” Megan says. “I’m always afraid someone is going to figure out I’m not supposed to be there. They’ll find me out. But, I think something’s wrong if you’re not nervous. You have to not let nerves be in your way. You have to use them to your advantage. It keeps you honest, on your toes, and motivated to do the best you can to prove you really belong there.”

Megan describes, “Can you imagine? I made my Broadway debut opposite Idina Menzel having never done the show with other people before! It was a whole lot of new experiences at once. There were times during the show – there’s a rehearsal studio in the Gershwin (Theatre) at the top of the building – and me and the other standby would go rehearse together so no one would hear us, and we’d do the scenes together, but that was about all I had before going on my first time.

“They called me a couple of hours before the show saying Jennifer had called out. Idina walked in the dressing room and asked if I wanted to go over anything. I was so terrified. She said, ‘Let’s just go out and make this show our own. Let’s have fun.’

She could have been particular about where I should stand or what I should do, but she wasn’t like that. She was really wonderful. It totally put me at ease and I was able to have fun. I don’t really remember much about that night, but I was able to relax a little bit.”

Megan describes how people in New York, in particular, feel very comfortable walking up to her on the street to talk

about her role as Ivy in SMASH. “People don’t really understand. They think they’re giving a compliment, but it’s really not.

‘Wow! The camera does really add a lot [of weight], because you’re really tiny.’ That one’s a hard one to swallow.”

Currently, Megan and her husband make their home in Los Angeles, though she says she goes back to New York frequently. She also visits her family in Bellevue and was here for the holidays.

She is looking forward to her second visit with SMC. “They’re so much fun. I’m looking forward to working with them again. I pretty much knew, before I worked with

them, that I was going to be walking into a fun, talented group of people.”

If you are wondering what her segments of the evening will be, she reports that she is singing “Popular” and “For Good” (from Wicked), “Corner of the Sky” (Pippin), “Stranger to the Rain” (Children of Eden) – Megan says: “The lyrics say, ‘I’m not a stranger to the rain,’ and that’s hilarious because I’m from Seattle.” – and “Beautiful City” (Godspell). “For Good” is being done as a solo.

Megan says she sings to the audience as the people who have changed her “for good.”

And she got married to Brian Gallagher in November. Now, she and Brian are touring in performances together. Megan told SGN, in a phone interview, “It’s so great that we can travel together. He sings and plays guitar and he’s a dreamboat!”

Megan is on record as wanting to “just keep working.” She’s willing to do any kind of performance that comes along, from stage to television to movies to recording studio.

She has said she got tired of attending “workshops and hearing ‘We need a star’ [before she became one]. I can cry or [work to become] the person they’re going to hire. I’m lucky someone believed in me and took a chance.” Her code for longevity is: diversify.

The musical had opened just nine months before, and the role of Glinda had been taken over by Jennifer Laura Thompson from originator, Kristin Chenoweth. Megan was cast as stand-by, which meant that she had to be there every performance in case she had to go on.

However, Megan describes that it also meant that she had only ever rehearsed with a stage manager saying lines to her, and had never even rehearsed in costume!

Weissberger has made a life’s work of preserving Brundibár and its legacy, and her eloquent testimony has brought history to life for countless people of all ages. IN THE MOOD maintains a fresh, dynamic, ever-changing perspective on the culture of the Swing Era. Creator and producer Bud Forrest is a Juilliard-trained pianist and conductor who served as accompanist for the U.S. Air Force chorus, The Singing Sergeants. He compiled the greatest music from the swing era into a revue about the Big Band era and the influence of this music during the WWII years. The second act is experienced as a moving tribute to those who fought the war.

Swing Era. Swing music ranged from mellow intimate ballads to up-tempo big band rhythms, where the waltz and fox trot competed with the wild, acrobatic jitterbug and jive, and when boogie-woogie crazed hepcats crowded the dance floors.

Swing Music inspired America with a vision for the future filled with hope, promise and prosperity. The music moved the Nation’s spirit and helped to sustain the nation’s morale during World War II, the pivotal event of the 1940s. IN THE MOOD recreates the rhythmic, jazzy, brassy, sentimental, romantic and patriotic music of this important time.

IN THE MOOD captures the feel of the 1940s in part because of the involvement of the late Vic Schoen as the show’s primary arranger. Mr. Schoen created the musical arrangements for the entire career of the legendary Andrews Sisters. He became music director for both Paramount and Universal Pictures as well as music director for The Dinah Shore Show, and was one of the seminal creators of the swing-era sound, which he imbued into IN THE MOOD. In 1993, the National Archives in Washington, DC brought IN THE MOOD to their audiences as part of their commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of WWII, and the response was extraordinary, with crowds lining up for hours before curtain time. 5,000 attended the out-of-doors performance on the steps of the National Archives building on Constitution Avenue, with many staying to dance the night away.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer After the opening prologue to DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody & Sherman I was deathly afraid I was about to watch an animated movie that was going to outright murder a beloved piece of my own personal childhood. The first act of the movie, set in and around Marie Antoinette’s pre-revolutionary France (pre only by a scant few moments, in point of fact), is horrendous, loud, shrill, obnoxious and forced in ways that were instantly off-putting. I was uncomfortable and upset in ways I could barely comprehend, and as the movie was going to run for an additional 80 minutes I was pretty much positive I was about to be in for an abnormally long afternoon at the multiplex.

Then something happened. As soon as our lead character, super-smart, inventively loquacious and atypically fond of puns canine Mr. Peabody (voiced by an unrecognizable Ty Burrell), and his “pet” adopted boy Sherman (Max Charles) return home to modern day New York City things magically take a turn. Suddenly this movie – inspired by the acclaimed shorts created by Jay Ward featured as part of “Rocky and His Friends” and “The Bullwinkle Show,” directed by Lion King and Stuart Little handler Rob Minkoff, and written by “Dirty Sexy Money” scribe Craig Wright – was everything I hoped it would be, funny, inventive, smart, intuitive and genuine in all the ways that matter.

The shorts, there were over 90 of them, were inspired gems that never spoke down to children while at the same time treated parents with respect. They were wildly irreverent while also maintaining a fondness for historical accuracy (or, at the very least, something close to it), a combination that made each an idiosyncratic delight full of whimsical, and edifying, surprises. More than that, though, in their own way they also shed honestly ascertained parenting insights, the relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman as authentic and as well thought out as any network television animation has ever seen (and that includes both “The Flintstones” and “The Simpsons”).

Wonderfully, the movie embraces this esthetic, adding a plucky newcomer in the form of spunky, somewhat spoiled elementary school queen bee Penny Peterson (Ariel Winter) to the mix as the catalyst that gets the ramshackle, devil-may-care plot going at full speed. She’s the one that convinces Sherman to use Mr. Peabody’s time machine, dubbed the WABAC, against his adoptive father’s wishes. She’s also the one that forces them to get into all sorts of mayhem and trouble as they find themselves stranded outside the gates of Troy before a certain clandestine invasion and chatting with Leonardo da Vinci right before he paints the “Mona Lisa.”

But as much as she changes the game, the focus always remains where it needs to, and that’s squarely on the relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman, how they relate one to the other, neither taking their counterpart for granted, as they navigate parentchild mechanics that are as timeless and as omnipresent as history itself. Throughout the eras, throughout all cultures, being a kid is a miraculous exploration, one that can be made spellbinding and inspirational with the right adult helping to lead the way. As for that parent, raising a child is a mindboggling journey that rests uneasily upon an ever-changing learning curve, finding the confidence and chutzpah to face all the obstacles with love and acceptance no matter what a constant challenge.

It is here where Minkoff and Wright excel, making sure those indefinable yet instantly recognizable facets come to the forefront with an open heart and without any extra didactic padding or melodramatic pretense.

Much like the original shorts, the pair do not talk down to children while also making sure to include numerous elements their parents will enjoy and embrace as well. It is this relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman, between father and son, that gives the movie its impetus, gives it its effervescent kick, and as such ends up being a thematic through line easy to embrace and even simpler, if you can believe it, this is a dog and his boy tale, after all, to relate to.

& Ted’s Excellent Adventure variety than it is anything else, which in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not a trait I found invigorating or, for that matter, interesting. There’s some nifty stuff in Egypt circa King Tut, but it gets derailed by overblown pyrotechnics and Indiana Jones-like bits of daring-do, that annoyed me more than anything else they did. Also, it took quite some time before I warmed to Penny, her character and demeanor initially too annoying for its own good.

Be that as it may, I liked Mr. Peabody & Sherman. It didn’t murder my child-

hood, didn’t derail my happy memories of watching “The Bullwinkle Show” in the morning before school in the 1980s.

More than that, the movie allowed my imagination to soar while also bringing a semblance of comfort to my heart, even the missteps not derailing my enjoyment of the whole (save for that abhorrent prologue) one single bit. It’s a good movie and, in many ways, an even better update of a classic, iconic bit of animated television, and something tells me when I watch it again, I’ll enjoy it even more the second time around.

Expertly cast, reasonably well paced and featuring a decent enough premise – small town pharmacist feeling like his life is in a depressing rut begins an affair with a seductively glamorous local who introduces him to the psychedelic wonders of his wares, things spiraling quickly out of control thereafter – the movie should at the very least be worth a handful of a few perceptively unsettling laughs. Instead, directors Geoff Moore and David Posamentier, who also wrote the trite script, revel in sitcom level platitudes, doing nothing with either the material or their all-star collection of actors, the film leaving a relatively bizarre, uncomforting aftertaste

that’s as distasteful as it is unfortunate.

Sam Rockwell is Douglas Varney, a lonely man trapped in what he thinks is a tyrannical marriage with domineering wife Kara (Michelle Monaghan). He runs the local pharmacy, seemingly forced upon him by his truculent father-in-law Walter (Ken Howard), and for all intents and purposes has given up on trying to do anything close to interesting with the remainder of his life.

Enter Elizabeth Roberts (Olivia Wilde).

She’s wealthy. She’s sexy. She’s also stuck in a bad marriage. To top it off, she’s a hopeless addict whose free-spirited tendencies are hardly secretive. Elizabeth gets her hooks into Douglas something fierce, leading him down a mind-bending path of alcohol and recreational drug use that allows his inhibitions to vanish and his true opinions to come out into the

The characters are sketchily written at best, all of them nothing more than blank ciphers who barely register as flesh and blood creations. More, at times it is like each is inhabiting a completely different motion picture, making the fact they’re all supposed to be existing in the same cinematic universe, let alone the same small Americana drenched town, hopelessly difficult to believe.

Wilde admittedly has moments – I do like it when she gets the opportunity to cut loose and revel in her comedic abilities (watch her in Butter and you’ll see what I mean). And there is a grand sequence right before the third act begins its dreadful cycle into mediocrity where I thought, just for a second, Rockwell was going to be able to save things all on his lonesome. But it sadly doesn’t happen, and at no time did I ever feel like the filmmakers had a good enough handle on things to allow any of what was going on to matter in a way I’d be happy with. Better Living Through Chemistry is a waste of time, the whole thing nothing more than a bad drug that’s about as addictive as a placebo washed down with a tap water chaser.

open. Sure, there’s the unintended side effect of his pharmacy suddenly being investigated by the DEA, but that doesn’t stop the pair from living it up like never before, repercussions be damned just as long as a good time is had by all.

Other veteran actors appearing here include Jane Fonda and Ray Liotta, while a bevy of recognizable faces show up in a series of supporting roles. But this is Rockwell’s showcase, plain and simple, the filmmakers wisely placing him front and center, allowing the celebrated performer to cut loose and go ballistic like only he can.

He’s as unhinged and uninhibited as ever, a handful of second act monologues crackling with the same kind of sardonic, acid-tongue ferocity the actor has long been known for.

Good thing, too, because without him I’m not sure there would be anything positive to talk about. Moore and Posamentier’s script feels like an idea desperately searching for a valid reason to exist more than it does an actual feature-length narrative, the pair falling upon the most rudimentary of rom-com and Capraesque melodramatic clichés in order to get themselves from points A to B to C.

and why she’s even around not even slightly important. Paul approaches things as if he’s still on the set of “Breaking Bad,” and while I appreciate his commitment at the same time his Tobey ends up being such a dour, doleful presence, sitting with him for two full hours is far more difficult than it really should be.

As for Cooper, his villain is about as threatening as a dull butter knife, the usually charismatic veteran phoning it in as if he’s teaching a Villainy 101 online correspondence course for the University of Phoenix.

It does not help that, for as stunningly designed, photographed, edited and scored the final race proves to be, the actual mechanics of it are so beyond silly they’re almost insulting. There’s also no discernible reason why anyone would choose to be a part of such an event. It doesn’t feel like there’s anything in it for the competitors. And although it’s announced over and over that the winner gets to keep all the competing cars after

what ends up happening to them (hint: it ain’t pretty) at the end of the race, in the end, this doesn’t seem like all that great a prize, what with jail time, hefty fines, not to mention massive doctor bills sure to ensue when the race is over.

Granted, considering the source material, I’m thinking I should be thankful Need for Speed ended up being so compulsively watchable as, in all fairness, it could have easily been anything but. Waugh’s attempt at a genre throwback to films of the late 1960s, early 1970s is commendable, while his tip of the hat to fellow directors as diverse as John Frankenheimer, William Friedkin, Monte Hellman, Peter Yates, George Miller and a whole slew of others is exceedingly well done. I just wish the interior components making things look so snazzy held their own with nearly as much strength as the engine propelling the drama forward does. Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) is a regular guy making a day-to-day living in Mt. Kisco, New York, he and his team of automotive pros rebuilding classic cars while doing a bit of underground street racing on the side. A lucrative deal with former town bad boy turned racing superstar Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) allows the wary former rivals to engage in tepid attempts at friendship. This goes tragically south, however, when an impromptu race leaves Tobey’s protégé Little Pete (Harrison Gilbertson) dead and the wealthy Dino claiming ignorance of any wrong doing.

Fast-forward two long years. Tobey is out of jail itching for revenge, and he and his gang of trusted cohorts know how to get it.

They’ll show the world just how guilty and evil Dino is, beating him at his own game in a super-secretive, high-stakes, winnertakes-all street race sponsored and run by the mysterious Monarch (Michael Keaton).

Now he’s got 48-hours to get from one side of the country to the other, driving the same souped-up Mustang he original restored for his nemesis to sell on the open market not so long ago to get him there.

Is it any surprise that Need for Speed is dumb movie? Based on a best-selling series of video games, using a plot that even the Fast & Furious series would consider absurd, featuring characters that are as thin as they are one-dimensional, there is nothing here that breaks the mold or goes beyond B-grade convention. This is a tired, trite and unapologetically nonsensical exercise in automobile chase film clichés, and I can’t imagine anyone anywhere who might of even theoretically assume it would have been anything otherwise.

Yet as inane as all of this might be, I’ve got to give it up to director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor). The veteran stuntman doesn’t skimp where the cars and their racing are concerned, attempting to manufacture an old school barnburner along the same lines of Vanishing Point, Gone in 60 Seconds or Two-Lane Blacktop. He gleefully follows in the footsteps of Grand Prix, Bullitt, The Road Warrior, Ronin and To Live and Die in L.A., the filmmaker and his crackerjack

team staging sequences of vehicular mayhem that are without a doubt mind-blowing.

It’s gloriously staged stuff, and if I were willing to check my brain at the door and let all of what Waugh offers up gently rev me into petrol-drenched submission I’d probably be out in some random empty parking lot doing cartwheels while the smell of burning rubber drowns me in its scent. The sound design is without compare, almost to the same level as to what Ron Howard and company came up with for their Formula 1 racing epic Rush. As for the cinematography, Shane Hurlbut’s (Terminator Salvation) camerawork is fantastic, more often than not granting the viewers a bird’s eye view behind the wheel that’s stunning.

Be that as it may, the script is relentlessly stupid, and as much fun as Keaton seems to be having, no one else in the movie appear to be enjoying themselves near as much, save maybe an exceedingly game Imogen Poots, the mechanics behind her character

Now that we’ve cleared up that rumor, let’s talk about what Jai Rodriguez has been up to since “Queer Eye.” As mentioned previously, the multi-talented member of the “Fab Five” has been a busy fellow.

He has worked regularly as an authority in culture and style with extensive hosting credits, including: “Styleyes Miami” (SiTv), “America’s Prom Queen” (ABC Family), “Ultimate Style” (Style Network), two consecutive seasons of “Groomer Has It” (Animal Planet), and “Model Latina” (SiTv).

As an actor, Rodriguez has appeared on numerous shows, including: LOGO’S “Rick and Steve,” “Nip/Tuck,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Bones,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “GIGANTIC” (TeenNick); however, it was his 2011 tear-jerking performance as the Transgender Amanda Knott on “Harry’s Law” that showcased his extraordinary talent as an actor.

Rodriguez is the only male actor who, after rising to stardom on a reality TV show, has successfully transitioned to a regular role on Primetime series, “Malibu Country” (ABC). Actors who share that accomplishment include: Jennifer Hudson, Katherine McPhee and NeNe Leakes according to broadwayworld.com.

After “Malibu Country” was not picked up for another season, Jai switched management companies and they have taken a more aggressive approach. They’ve encouraged him to branch out to more dramas and even “helped evolve his look” – which I don’t know what they are talking about since he has always looked super fine. Now that he’s proven that he’s more than just a reality show queen, showcasing himself in a wide spectrum of media (television, radio, and theater) he’s ready to come back to non-scripted television and would love to host a show like “The Chew” or even a reboot of “Queer Eye.” No matter what route he decides, it’s certain we will see more of him – both on TV and his body.

They look like they are wearing a silk kimono. If there was a drag queen fish, it would totally be the Beta.”

Despite living in #Weho, Jai (still an eligible bachelor) has not become a jaded #meangay #plastic or a skank ho-bag.

He is completely the opposite and a total sweetheart! He is NO Jai-Ho (Pussycat Dolls reference for ya). He’s actually an old school romantic and even has the same dating problems that us “regular folk” do.

“I like old school dating. Unfortunately, I have what many of us know as the threeweek dating curse. You meet someone who you spark with, spend lots of time getting to know and everything is going great, but then around the third week you realize there’s a non-negotiable issue, and then you have to move him into the dating ‘just friends’ column.”

He’s still optimistic though. Like a true actor/screen writer, he pines for a romance to be scripted like something out of a romantic comedy. “I want to have a Jess and Nick (#NewGirl on FOX) moment.

I imagine we have been friends forever and one day we look across at each other and realize we are in love.” Maybe he will meet his future Jess or Nick (I won’t speculate on which one he is because I’m totally Klassy and I don’t ask top/bottom questions during the interviews) among one of the 30,000+ Gay men from all over the world at this year’s White Party Palm Springs (#WPPS).

7 years ago. I was a bit overwhelmed by the massive amount of people and production that went into the event. They really know how to put on a party! There was so much to take in. I had such a great time that I was determined to come back. Some advice I’d give to anyone attending for the first time would be: Take in as much as you can; the weekend is what you make of it! You will meet so many new people and make so many friends that you’ll want to come back every year. Besides the parties, there are so many great restaurants in downtown Palm Springs to try (all within walking distance of the host hotel). The entire weekend was absolutely amazing, but by far my favorite event is the T-Dance. It’s an outdoor venue, the weather is perfect and the beautiful backdrop of the mountains makes the experience so memorable. After the sun sets there’s even a fireworks display!”

You can see Jai as he hosts the White Carpet arrivals and introduces the main acts at the White Party events April 25-28 in Palm Springs.

Superstar entertainment has become a hallmark of the events. Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Carly Rae Jepsen, Icona Pop, Anastasia, Toni Braxton, Carmen Electra, Ke$ha and Robyn have all graced the stage at White Party.

When asked who he thinks he’ll be introducing, Jai says he doesn’t know for sure, but speculates it could be anyone – from #BritneySpears who started her Residency at #Planet Hollywood (stay tuned in May when we cover her new show in Las Vegas) to #MileyCyrus who’s “White Hot” right now.
