Currently, BenDeLaCreme stars as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6, on LOGO TV. Since February 24, BenDeLaCreme acts as your hostess alongside local performance legend and Stranger Genius Award recipient, Sarah Rudinoff, as

you watch the reality drag TV show that is in search of their next drag superstar at Century Ballroom. BenDeLaCreme gives all the behind the scenes dirt, dishing with Rudinoff and other special guests.

A satisfying twist in LungFish Productions’ The Last 5 Years

The original understanding of the plot would be that Jamie cheats on Cathy and that’s why they end their marriage.

But Traver reimagined the story and had James Frasca sing with a wine bottle in his hand, implying that what “nobody needed to know” was that Jamie is a closet drunk.

It certainly is a credible reason to break up – many couples break up over drugs or alcohol – but it softens the character flaw. If Jamie has an affair, what redeeming value does he have as a love interest for Cathy?

The last song in the musical has Jamie singing “I love you” to Cathy. If Jamie parts from Cathy due to his drinking, that makes it far more understandable for him to say “I love you” to her, even though he can’t control his addiction, than if he says that after cheating on her with another woman.

Kudos to Traver and the Frascas!

We shall look forward to what LungFish develops next, and applaud the creative thinking that led to a satisfying musical experience of The Last Five Years.

A new company, Lungfish Productions (www.lungfishproductions.com) has begun producing plays in the last year. Their latest offering was The Last Five Years, a musical that is easy to produce because it only has two characters on stage. The musical was written by Jason Robert Brown, who is famous for intricate music.

JRB, as many refer to him, has written some very autobiographical musicals, and this is no exception. This story is told with the male character falling in love and proceeding forward for five years of the relationship until the end, but the female character starts at the end of the five-year relationship and proceeds backwards in time to the beginning.

The male character is a writer, though to make it a little less autobiographical, he writes books, not musicals. The female is an actress, and she is written with a lot of insecurities. Maybe because it’s autobiographical and JRB isn’t good at expressing himself, we learn a lot about the woman, Cathy, and really don’t learn much about the inte-

rior life of Jamie. In fact, Jamie comes off as very self-centered and rather hard to like.

This production starred EmilyRose Frasca and her husband James Frasca, and they made a lovely and believable couple. The production used a number of photographs of the relationship as it went forward and backward, and all of the photos used were real ones taken of the Frascas’ relationship itself.

The Frascas meshed well with one another and were both able to hold our attention and tell the story. They made a great casting choice for the production.

The music direction by Kimberly Dare was well done and the addition of a string section was marvelous. The musicians managed beautifully in a difficult performing venue where they were spread around and had some difficulty seeing their conductor. It’s somewhat the nature of that black box space.

Director Kyle James Traver had an interesting idea about The Last Five Years. He did not make any changes at all to any lyrics or dialogue, but he reinterpreted the meaning of a couple of songs in an interesting way.

After a first act that doesn’t reveal much about Jamie’s feelings, Jamie already comes off as an asshole.

In the second act, there is a song called “Nobody Needs to Know,” sung by Jamie.

Typically, it is a song sung by Jamie supposedly to a woman he is cheating with, about how his wife, Cathy, doesn’t need to know about the affair.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC SECONDSTORY REPERTORY Through March 9 SecondStory Repertory is continuing to expand its repertoire of musical theater productions in a big way. For some years, the company has included at least one major musical production in its season, and currently they are presenting an enchanting production of the intricate musical, A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and Hugh Wheeler (book).

Not only are they tackling this difficult little ditty, but right afterward, they will present Kiss of the Spider Woman and hard on its heels La Cage aux Folles. This is a heady season full of musicals!

Directed and choreographed by Chris Nardine, A Little Night Music is wonderfully cast with exquisite singers. Nardine does a terrific job using a quintet of singers to distract from discreet scene changes and augment the basic plot as a kind of Greek Chorus. The Quintet (Shelly Traverse, Beaven Walters, Britt Boyd, Elias Traverse and Doug Fahl) begin the musical with what sounds like a warm-up routine that blends into the overture – snippets of songs to come.

Some of Sondheim’s loveliest songs are part of this musical. The first set: “Now/ Later/Soon” is a complex suite of songs that explain the characters of Fredrik (Micheal O’Hara), married to an 18 year old still-virgin wife, Anne (Becca Orts), and Fredrik’s

son, Henrik (Tristan Carruthers), who is secretly also in love with Anne. As Fredrik sings “Now,” about wondering whether to go to bed with his wife, Anne sings “Soon,” as a plaintive plea for not being ready yet, and Henrik chafes at always being told “Later, Henrik, Henrik, Later.” The three pieces blend gorgeously together after being presented individually.

Fredrik takes Anne to a play starring an old flame of his, Desiree Armfeldt (Jennifer Littlefield), who cooks up a plan with her mother, Madame Armfeldt (Sharry O’Hare), to invite him and his new wife for a weekend in the country. Desiree thinks there might be a way to win Fredrik away from his wife and gain a more stable life with him. But she first must get rid of her current lover, Carl-Magnus (Josh Krupke), a boorish officer who drags his wife (Jenny Vaughn Hall) to the country to compete for Desiree’s attention with Fredrik.

You may remember the famous song, “Send in the Clowns,” comes from A Little Night Music. Desiree sings it to Fredrik as she realizes that he may well be lost to her, just as she is ready to embrace what they could have together. In the context of the production, it is a profound expression of realization and mature growth. The “clowns” reference the idea that someone should be laughing at the irony of their situation.

It is a comedy, however, so ultimately things work out. Anne figures out that Henrik loves her and she, therefore, loves Henrik. CarlMagnus is made jealous when his wife throws see NIGHT MUSIC page 5

laments liaisons and the disappearance of elegant mistresses who become gifted, as she was, with jewels and villas. O’Hare was a pleasure to watch in that select small role, and it was easy to imagine her playing Desiree, as her bio states she did some years back.

With musical direction by Paul Linnes, the musicians sound lush. Support from the technical side is also solid. The set has some lovely cut-out wooden lacework with a starry wall behind. (Sets, lights and sound are credited to The Squolf.) Handsome period costumes are designed by John Allbritton.

A Little Night Music is a challenge to get right. The singers must be capable of light opera. The humor is a cool, arch and teasing type – the kind you smile at rather than guffaw loudly to. SecondStory Rep has managed to really get it right, even with much less of a budget than other musical houses around town. Kudos to the little theater that can!

herself at Fredrik, and decides he loves his wife after all. Fredrik feels relieved when Anne runs off with Henrik and he is, therefore, free to accept that he still loves Desiree.

All the leads are solid performers very well suited to their respective roles. O’Hara is commanding but a bit tired as Fredrik. Orts is twittery and unaware as Anne. Carruthers is woeful and bitter as Henrik, the desperately unhappy young lover. Hall is droll and amusing, and easy to identify with as the woman not sure why she is in love with a man who uses her badly. Krupke blusters amusingly as the boorish officer. Littlefield is arch and dramatic as the artist who wants to settle down, and has an easy way of being sexy without apology.

Also, Kristin Burch adroitly plays a maid who wants to have fun before she settles down. She finds a kindred soul in Frid (Chip Wood), the manservant to Madame Armfeldt. BenDeLaCreme has teamed with the award-winning writer/filmmaker Wes Hurley to star in the original web-series “Capitol Hill,” – a “Queer homage to ‘70s-‘80s TV shows, starring Waxie Moon.” The team released the pilot episode this week and, if Facebook chatter has anything to say about, you’d already think the “Capitol Hill” web series won an Academy Award. The truth is the team of Hurley/Moon is a winner; add BenDeLaCreme and you’ve got magic.

from the more overtly demonstrative Spanish and Hispanic pieces. The whole ensemble returned to play another assortment of folias and New World dances with panache, verve and even more daring. Their borderline wild playing brought out the cheers and standing ovations of the packed Town Hall audience, who were rewarded with another spirited and sensuous dance encore. On paper, much of this ancient music might appear dry and dusty, but in performance by these splendid musicians, it was anything but. Instead, it was an evening of music – rare, inspiring and fun – unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.

butions brought a unique and unexpected “south-of-the-border” levity to the concert.

Alternating between treble and bass viols, Savall played with intense, serious focus heightened by his demeanor that seems to channel the spirit of a 17th century Spanish nobleman straight out of an el Greco painting. This spirit opened the show, with Savall intoning the famous Renaissance tune “la Spagna” as an introit to the Spanish theme of bringing this ancient music to the New World – both in history, as well as in the present day coming to Seattle! Other players came in discreetly, the Tembembe players adding light flourishes of guitar and percussion to the haunting melody. Savall continued playing several “folias,” or improvised melodies played over repeated bass figures. Usually played on the harp – these alternated between austere and nostalgic, but followed with gradually more lively, complex figurations, with Savall demonstrating his nimble but never overtly showy virtuosity.

On the surface, these opening pieces would have seemed to set the scene for an evening of hypnotic but serious music making.

This mood, however, quickly went out the window with the playing of the Tembembe group leading the “lascivious dances” (as no less than Cervantes himself called this music, as explained in the concert notes) of the “Jácaras (Song from Tixtla).” Here, we were suddenly transported to a Mexican cantina, as it were, as one may have existed in 1750.

Singers Ulises Martínez and Leopoldo Novoa alternated their singing in a “call and response” format not unfamiliar to lovers of Hispanic folk music. The flavor of the performance was fun and spicy, and a world away

from the sobriety of the strictly European music. This spirit in turn seemed to spur on Savall to perform more unbridled and daring variations in his solos that followed. It was fascinating to see him perform with the internal focus of a patrician master, his face betraying virtually no emotion, yet the sheer physical exertion of his playing brought out a seething muscularity to this music that was unexpected from a player who generally exhibits such technical control and an impassive outward expression.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Absurd Non-Stop somehow still flies high Federal Air Marshall Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) is having a bad day. He’s an alcoholic. He smokes too much. He doesn’t particularly care for his job anymore. For that matter, he doesn’t believe he’s still any good at it. The flight to London is one he doesn’t want to be on, and if he has his druthers, he’s going to make sure his agency returns him to the United States sooner rather than later.

That’s not going to cut it. Minutes into his six-plus hour flight Marks receives a text message on his secure network claiming two things: The person sending the message is on board the plane and, more significantly, they are going to kill someone on board every 20 minutes unless $150-million dollars is deposited into a secret numbered account. Worse, the person is going out of their way to frame Marks, impeding his progress as he attempts to ferret them out, while also making him look like a terrorist to both the passengers in the air and to his superiors on the ground.

It’s not like Non-Stop wants to be more than what it is. The film is a glossy airline thriller, a bit of Executive Decision crossed with healthy doses of Taken and any random ‘ticking-clock’ suspense flick you can think of from the past 35 years. Credited to three screenwriters, directed by Neeson’s Unknown handler Jaume Collet-Serra, nothing new or unexpected happens. And while one wants to expect more, discovering this just isn’t so shouldn’t come as anything akin to a massive shock.

What is a shock, however, and happily, is just how unabashedly entertaining the

film proves to be. As rudimentary as it all is, as unsurprising as the identity of the chief villain ends up being, Collet-Serra’s handling of the story coupled with the collective strength of the film’s cast allows things to ultimately be more fun than they have any right to be. Save for the final ten minutes of self-indulgent histrionics, overall Non-Stop is a piece of B-grade high-flying silliness I’m not embarrassed to admit I enjoyed a fair amount.

It helps that the performers, save for Julianne Moore, a star as big as Neeson in her own right, are a collection of strong character actors both new and well-known. Scoot McNairy from Argo. Corey Stoll from House of Cards. 12 Years a Slave Oscarnominee Lupita Nyong’o. Arbitrage scenestealer Nate Parker. Downton Abbey fanfavorite Michelle Dockery. Linus Roache.

Shea Whigham. Anson Mount. These are a few of the names who populate the scenery, each of them having something significant to offer even if the actions taken by their respective characters do not always come as much of a shock (or, for that matter, make a lot in the way of sense).

Neeson, while not pushing himself in the same way he did with recent performances in The Grey or Five Minutes of Heaven, knows his way around this kind of movie and this sort of role all the same and as such he slips into Marks’ persona with ease. He brings gravitas and intensity, even a third act bit of speechifying, as ludicrous and obnoxious as it might be, more rousing and emotionally invigorating than expected.

The veteran goes through these motions without any excess embellishments, and while no one is giving him an Academy Award unlike his work in Clash of the Ti-

tans or Battleship there’s nothing for him to be ashamed about, either.

I’m not saying Non-Stop is great. It isn’t.

But in all honesty it isn’t meant to be, its aspirations not aimed much higher than being old-school popcorn entertainment made with craftsmanship and skill. And that, in fairness, is what it is, Collet-Serra prov-

ing himself more than capable of bringing the majority of this off with few missteps.

While the movie doesn’t know when to, forgive me, stop, that doesn’t make watching it any less enjoyable, and taken on its own terms, this is one February release I wouldn’t begrudge anyone choosing to see one little bit.

Intriguing Vermeer an undeveloped portrait

It is extremely well put together and assembled – I must give the film that – Teller having an exceptional eye for detail and his ability to pace what potentially could have been a disjointed, unfocused maze is sublime. At just around 80 minutes I was never bored by any of what was transpiring, and even though I’d have felt just as comfortable watching the film on PBS, as theatrical experiences go I’ve certainly had a heck of a lot worse.

Be all that as it may, simply put, Tim’s Vermeer wasn’t for me. I get what it is say-

ing and I fully understand the points and the ideas Teller was hoping to put across to the viewer, but for whatever reason none of them spoke to me as profoundly or as intimately as I’m sure he wanted them to. For many, this film will be as invigorating and as enchanting as many of the real paintings the Dutch legend painted during his lifetime. In all honesty, I am not quite sure I get all the fuss and acclaim for the documentary Tim’s Vermeer. Do I respect it? Certainly.

Filmed over an eight-year period, following inventor and visionary tech wizard Tim Jenison (it’s doubtful the Desktop Revolution – look it up – would have happened like it did without him) on a supremely unusual creative and intellectual quest, it isn’t like the darn thing is lacking in ambition. I just didn’t end up finding all that much of interest in the watching of it from start to finish, and I can’t exactly say I felt like I had a solid understanding of why any of this mattered, let alone why I was supposed to care, by the time the journey came to an end.

At its most basic, the film is an attempt on Jenison’s part to figure out how Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer – “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” is arguably his most recognized work – achieved his singular creations.

The inventor is obsessed with deciphering how this 17th century master rendered his painting in such exquisite and intimate detail, how he was able to use light and shadow in such complicated, and by all accounts far ahead of its time, fashion. He journeys all over the world attempting to put the pieces of the puzzle together, in the end coming to the conclusion Vermeer manufactured ma-

chinery allowing for optical recreations of his chosen subjects unlike anything being attempted by any of his contemporaries.

Then comes the recreation. Jenison assembles his own version of the type of machine Vermeer might have used, utilizing tools and materials from the time period, to recreate one of the Dutch master’s most recognized works. Director Teller (yes, the magician who works with Penn Jillette) follows him throughout his quest, populating the film with interviews with scholars, researchers and Vermeer aficionados all curious to see if the Texas inventor will be successful.

Fine. Great. Wonderful. I get where this is all going. More than that, I can also see why someone so immersed in magic, showmanship and creativity like Teller would be so intrigued by Jenison’s pursuit. Problem was, for whatever reason, I had trouble being moved by anything that was going on.

More often than not I kept feeling like I was watching a very, very rich person with far too much time on his hands engage in a kind of role play and experimentation only the wealthy elite of his ilk could ever hope to engage in. On top of that, a lot of the realizations about imagination, innovation, inspiration and all the rest felt preordained, and I can’t say there was ever a moment or a statement from any of the talking heads populating the piece that ever caught me by complete surprise.

Child’s Pose a prescient evisceration of societal privilege

the script with The Death of Mr. Lazarescu scribe Razvan Radulescu, shows himself to be a major talent worth keeping track of. No aspect of the film feels disconnected from any other part, the camerawork, sound design and editing all working in remarkable tandem. He handles his actors with confidence, and even when the story takes a decidedly nasty and twisted turn somehow the filmmaker maintains a level of brittle, earth-shattering realism that’s always abhorrently invigorating.

Child’s Pose isn’t a nice movie or an easy

story to stomach, stripping its characters bare, showcasing them as they nakedly are, for both good and for bad. It doesn’t mince words and it certainly doesn’t play nice, everything culminating in ways that are as disturbing as they are almost, sadly, preordained. Yet the movie remains a masterful exercise in societal commentary that feels as prescient and precise as anything I can recall of recent vintage, all of it anchored by a performance from the exquisite Gheorghiu that’s as authentic as it is dazzling.

In her eyes, steely-eyed architect Cornelia Keneres (Luminita Gheorghiu) has been a wonderful mother, gifting her son Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache) all he could have wanted. This makes their estrangement all the more upsetting. Why does he distance himself from her? What could she ever have done to deserve this treatment? Her love has been omnipresent, all-encompassing, and as such he should feel himself lucky to have had the good fortune to have someone like her raising him.

There is an accident. Barbu has struck and killed a child while recklessly driving in a drunken fugue. All signs point to his guilt but Cornelia will not hear of it. Her son comes from wealth and privilege while the same cannot be said for the working class youngster who has tragically died. This ferocious mother will stop at nothing to prove her beloved Barbu is innocent of these crimes; those thinking of stopping her doing so at their own immediate peril.

There is a gritty urgency to Romanian import Child’s Pose that is undeniable.

The winner of the Golden Bear at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival, this raw, unsettling descent into unrelenting, murderously smothering motherly love is a visceral saga of madness and mayhem that turned my stomach while at the same time it stirred my intellect to unimaginable heights. It is a methodic, highly disciplined drama that rips the heart out while at the same time explor-

ing shockingly prophetic themes and ideas, the whole movie ultimately a stinging evisceration of class mores and extremes, taking the bourgeois ethos of excess unsullied and unchained to it absolute breaking point.

Gheorghiu is incredible. In virtually every scene she saunters through the film with sophisticatedly carnivorous grace, no move out of character, no facial tick or breathless sigh not fully thought out before it is delivered. She is a predator hunting her prey, completely clueless as to why so much of the rest of the world, including her son, does not find her company pleasant, let alone something to actively seek out, embracing her perceived place of privilege as a societal, maybe even genetic, fact more than it is something she has earned through hard work and sacrifice.

With all that being so, what Gheorghiu manages to accomplish then is made all the more incredible. Why? Cornelia is so dislikable, so infuriating, such a creature of depraved indifference who believes herself superior to just about everyone around her, spending time with the lady isn’t exactly what one normally would associate with anything close to fun. Yet, things being as they are, there was never a second where I wanted to turn my eyes away from her or wanted to stop watching the movie. Her performance is magnetic in ways that are borderline indefinable, each facet and nuance of her portrayal intimately ascertained brilliance revealing Cornelia’s inner workings with salient, invigorating clarity.

Ambitious Empire almost rises to the occasion

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer 300: Rise of an Empire is, for the most part, set concurrently to the events depicted in Zack Snyder’s audacious, hugely successful (and somewhat influential) adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300. Instead of focusing on one key event, however, this movie, also based on a Miller graphic novel (Xerxes) opens up the world and attempts to showcase all of the intricate political wheeling and dealing taking place when the Persian self-proclaimed “God-King,” Xerxes, invaded Greece intent on total domination.

Not that battles of an epic scale are still not front and center. At the core of this drama is General Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton), a cunning warrior known for his inspired battle tactics who believes only

a united Greece will be able to stand up to Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his overwhelming hordes. He is charged with holding off the God-King’s massive naval fleet led by the beautiful, bloodthirsty Artemisia (Eva Green), Xerxes’ second-in-command and his most trusted, and most duplicitous, confidant.

Themistokles’ hope is that he can hold out long enough for Spartan King Leonidas and his 300 warriors to make their heroic, if tragic, stand at the Hot Gates, knowing their selfless, epic sacrifice should be all that’s necessary to inspire the rest of Greece to mobilize under one banner and not as separate, discombobulated city-states. On many levels, 300: Rise of an Empire is far more ambitious than 300 ever was. The story is broader, far more all-encompassing, Themistokles’ defense of the Greek inlets, coupled with his political maneuverings to attempt to unite the country, epic in scope and grandiose in vision. Snyder, returning as both producer and co-screenwriter, once again working with fellow scribe Kurt Johnstad (Act of Valor), has massive designs for both this particular narrative as well as for the franchise as a whole. With this effort, it is obvious he is trying to up the ante – so much going on, Greek and Persian sides both – that it’s understandable if the viewer feels a little lost trying to navigate what is going on and why.

And, right there, is part of the reason why this sequel isn’t quite as entertaining or as giddily satisfying as the 2007 first film was. Just over 100 minutes long, the canvas is so expansive, so all-encompassing, there’s just too much going on for all of it to coalesce into a completely satisfying, let alone coherent, whole. Themistokles runs around Greece as if he were driving Dr. Emmett Brown’s DeLorean, going from Sparta to Athens to the country’s coast and then back again with almost instantaneous ease. While there he engages in various tête-à-têtes with random figures, most notably Spartan Queen Gorgo (a returning Lena Headey, her voiceover heard throughout) – all of which have point and purpose, yet none of which are clearly defined enough to matter in concrete, palpable ways.

At the same time, even with countless subsequent features stealing some of its visual thunder (notably Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, which I’d argue is a better, richer film than 300 in most respects), 300: Rise of an Empire still manages to entertain.

Stapleton, most recognizable for his role as Sgt. Damien Scott on the Cable action series “Strike Back,” is a fine, suitably masculine hero, delivering his various speeches of inspiration and valor with requisite charismatic authority. He has a primal ferocity to his movements that makes even his most tender remarks have an aura of urgent menace to them, striking chords of pathos, pain and tragedy with gruff, grizzled ease.

Then there is Eva Green. The former Casino Royale Bond babe steals the show, a carnal, serpentine depravity oozing from every pore and gracing all of her movements. She slithers and slinks through the film with strikingly violent elegance, twisting syllables and cutting off heads with equally striking gracefulness. Artemisia is a villain for the ages and Green taking charge of her without reservation or fear, allowing all sides and facets of her byzantine personality to surface with oftentimes traumatizing sincerity.

Using the building blocks left to him from Snyder, new director Noam Murro (Smart People) does a fairly solid job of attempting to make them his own; and while the use of slow motion accelerating and decelerating the action is a tad overdone, I was still captivated by much of what I was seeing all the same. The battle sequences are frequently stunning, and save for an odd, obnoxious sequence involving a horse near the end, I admit to finding the majority of the blood, carnage and swordplay suitably thrilling.

300: Rise of an Empire isn’t as fresh or as eye-popping as its predecessor, no surprise there, but on the whole it still stands as a moderately successful continuation of the story begun there. In other words, I liked it and, more than that, I’m curious to see where things go from here.

Celebrating 41 Years!

Joyous Shoot Me an inspired comedic biography I’m not sure it’s possible to dislike Elaine Stritch. The Tony and Emmy Award winning comedian, now in her 80s, is as vital and as confident as ever, her joie de vivre and zest for living life as apparent now as it has ever been at any point in her rambunctious, sprawling sixplus decades in the public spotlight. She is a woman of substance, talent, intellect and imagination, and to call or think of her as anything less would be a disservice in more ways than I can possibly count.

It is this life that the new cinema vérité style documentary Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me attempts to explore, doing just that and then some rather marvelously.

With the woman herself at the center of it all, filled with interviews and candid observations from the likes of Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Cherry Jones, Nathan Lane, John Turturro and the late James Gandolfini, director Chiemi Karasawa does a sublime job of examining this exceptional artist’s life and career in immaculate detail.

“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s,” she began. “[S]o I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own.” She finished up by stating, holding back tears as she did so, “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.”

She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight. And I just want to say, I love you, Mom. Thank you for teaching me to dream.”

20 Feet from Stardom principal Darlene Love leapt at her chance to grab the microphone, belting words of inspiration and triumph singing, “I sing because I’m happy! I sing because I’m free. ‘Cause his eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me.”

Blanchett got a nice round of applause for noting that movies with women at the center of them are not “niche,” stating, “[A]udiences want to see them [films with female protagonists] and, in fact, they earn money.”

In the end, even with Gravity dominating, the night belonged to 12 Years a Slave.

“Everyone deserves not just to survive but to live,” said director McQueen as he accepted the microphone from fellow producer Brad Pitt. “I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery and to those who still suffer in slavery today.” It was a powerful end to what was admittedly a rather incredible year of film, the 86th Academy Awards putting a stamp on 2013’s cinematic offerings as only Oscar gold can.

Disney’s billion dollar smash Frozen won in both categories in which it was nominated (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, “Let It Go”) as did Baz Luhrmann’s audacious, visually resplendent adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (Best Costume Design, Best Production Design). To no one’s surprise, Cate Blanchett walked away with the Best Actress for her work in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, as did the jubilant, life-affirming backup singer treatise 20 Feet from Stardom for Best Documentary Feature. Italy’s The Great Beauty waltzed away with the Best Foreign Film prize, while Spike Jonze’s rapturous 21st century new age romance Her spirited away the Best Original Screenplay Oscar in something of a minor surprise.

Speaking of surprises, David O. Russell’s ‘70s-set ABSCAM satirical comedy, American Hustle, joined that rarified club of double-digit nominees (it had ten) to walk away from Oscar night emptyhanded. Also going home a bridesmaid?

Captain Phillips, Nebraska (both with six nominations), The Wolf of Wall Street (with five) and Philomena (with four) also failed to capture an Academy Award in spite of being considered somewhat likely competitors in many of the categories in which they were nominated.

Comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres hosted for the second time, keeping things light and funny throughout and (save for a slight misstep regarding icon Liza Minelli, who was noticeably displeased with being referred to as “Sir”) handled her duties with easygoing aplomb. Best bit? An elongated skit – maybe too long, to be fair – involving having pizza delivered to the event only to later pass a hat, Pharrell Williams’ hat, to be specific, amongst a bevy of A-list celebs (including Brad Pitt and Harvey Weinstein) in order to pay the noticeably star-struck delivery driver.

doesn’t hold back, and like most great talents she is without a doubt her own worst critic. She speaks openly about her struggles, especially how they related to her alcoholism and fight against diabetes, but also her fear of getting old and her later realization that age was something to be embraced, not feared. The comedian opens up about it all while at the same time her friends, co-workers and those inspired by her comedic fearlessness wax poetic about all she’s meant to them as they’ve struck forth on their own professional careers.

Interspersed throughout all of this are archival and vintage clips of Stritch in action. Some of them we’ve obviously seen before. Many of them we blissfully have not. All work in dexterous tandem with everything else going on inside the film, Karasawa weaving things together in a melodious tapestry of inspiration and intellect that’s as rapturous and informative as it is entertaining and, more often than not, hysterical.

So, again, is it possible to dislike the legendary comic? Not to my mind, and as far as I’m concerned Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me proves it without anything close to resembling doubt.
