Cast of 4000 Miles: (l to r) Adam Standley, Susan Corzatte, Adria LaMorticella, Sara Porkalob
by Paul Torres SGN A&E Writer 4000 MILES ARTSWEST January 22-February 15 Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles centers on Leo, a young man ending an arduous bicycle trip across the United States (by way of Seattle). He dipped his bike’s back tire in the Pacific Ocean and before he dips that
front tire into the Atlantic Ocean to complete his pilgrimage, he makes a soul-searching stop at his grandmother’s (Vera) Greenwich Village apartment. 4000 Miles won the Obie Award for Best New American Play and was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. During his emotionally laden visit, a 21-year old Leo ambles through his youthful tribulations of an estranged girlfriend, peyotedriven regrets, guilt-ridden tragedy, and strained familial relationships.
Adam Standley gives a standout performance as the charming, wayward Leo. He could be any young man riding his bike around Seattle and, therefore, any one of our friends. Standley brings this character home. Vera is his 91-year-old tough and brassy grandmother. She is seemingly in need of his care, but she turns the doily-covered tables on him. Susan Corzatte is a sheer uplifting pleasure. Corzatte gives one of the top performances of the season as his
Commie, weed-smoking grandma. Corzatte is a veteran actor. Her love of the stage is evident and it enhances her performance as a no-nonsense, but empathetic elderly woman. Young Leo is amok and aimless. Vera, a widow for ten years, adds some balance as well as some brutally honest and hilarious truth to his life. Her comments about his girlfriend’s physical appearance are offensively funny and oddly endearing. Their conversations about mortality and past indiscretions is drama at its best. Herzog’s script illuminates this stage. One sweet scene between Vera and Leo plays out in the dark on the living room couch. It is so beautiful because it breathes a soft light into the characters that only the darkness of that room can reveal. Vera’s hearing may be impaired, but her heart is listening to her young grandson expel some travel-worn demons. This scene proves that Director Mathew Wright has a keen understanding for character. Supporting characters include Leo’s ex-girlfriend Becca (Adria LaMorticella) and Amanda (Sara Porkalob). Becca is steadfast in ending their relationship in the aftermath of a tragic Tyson Chicken
truck accident in the flatlands of Kansas involving Leo’s best friend. His heart is broken and he finds potential love in a one-night stand with a garrulous young Chinese American woman (Amanda) who reminds him of his adopted sister. The shifts of light from dawn to dusk and in between are almost their own character in this production. Lighting Director Tristan Roberson deserves praise for this aspect that fills intheemotionalwoesandthenilluminates the emotional joys in this cozy, rent-controlled New York City flat. 4000 Miles is another fine achievement for ArtsWest. Mathew Wright is at the pinnacle of his art. So far, this season is full of highlights like The Mountaintop and the sold-out Judy’s Scary Little Christmas. This show promises to be a breakthrough popular hit that reaches across all demographics. This production packs some humorous punches with its powerful dramatic moments. Vera and Leo’s chemistry lifts the moving performances by both Standley and Corzatte. You are happy to be on their journey because 4000 Miles is many miles of hard road full of pathos, humor, and unconditional love.
