Frank Ocean booked for Sasquatch next spring

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The Sasquatch Music Festival is six months away, but we can already make a huge announcement in regards to it. Frank Ocean will perform during the three-day event, scheduled for May 26-28, 2017 at The Gorge Amphitheatre. The R&B artist, who came out publicly as Bisexual shortly after his highly acclaimed album Channel Orange was released in 2012, will make one of his first live appearances in three years at the festival, which happens over Memorial Day Weekend in Eastern Washington. The New Orleans native’s sophomore effort, Blonde, hit record stores late this summer after a longer than expected wait that had fans desperately checking the singer-songwriter’s social media feeds for updates. Ocean opened his first major North American tour at The Showbox Market here in Seattle on July 13, 2012 to a sold out crowd, myself among them. Nirvana’s seminal hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has earned elite distinction, selected for induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame along with twenty-four other musical works of various genres. The alternative rock song was released in 1991, from the album Nevermind, and catapulted the Seattle band to the global spotlight en route to becoming one of the most groundbreaking recordings of the modern rock era.

This marks the second time Nirvana has received prestigious industry accolades in recent years, after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Other music pieces being added to the Grammy Hall of Fame this time include “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M., “Changes” by David Bowie, “ABC” by the Jackson 5, “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley, “You Don’t Own Me” by Leslie Gore, “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt.

We’re under two months before the Academy Award nominations are revealed and already the Best Original Score category is a nail-biter. The current frontrunner is Johann Johansson, a two-time nominee for The Theory of Everything and last year’s Sicaro, who is easily expected to make the cut for the Arrival soundtrack. Joining him will likely be Justin Hurwitz, who composed the tunes for Damian Chazelle’s original musical La La Land, and multiple nominee and 2015 winner Alexandre Desplat, a contender once again for his work on Florence Foster Jenkins. Heavy hitters John Williams and Thomas Newman could make the final five for The BFG and Finding Dory, respectively, while newcomers Mark Mancina (Moana), John Debney (The Jungle Book), Abel Korzeniowski (Nocturnal Animals) and Mica Levi (Jackie) could sneak in. As usual, there are many contenders vying for Best Original Song and the list will soon be trimmed to about a dozen by the Academy; thus far “We Know the Way” from Moana and “I’m Still Here” from the documentary Miss Sharon Jones! appear solid for nominations with a pair of numbers from La La Land, “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream),” right behind. “Heathens,” performed by

rock band Twenty One Pilots for the summer blockbuster Suicide Squad, and “I See Victory” by Kim Burrell and Pharell Williams from Hidden Figures, are potential favorites. “Can’t Stop the Feeling (Trolls), “How Far I’ll Go” (Moana) and Peter Gabriel’s “The Veil” from Snowden might surprise. The Oscar nominations are slated to be announced on January 24.

As for new shows, country maverick Dwight Yoakam comes to town January 13 at the Moore Theatre, JoJo is returning to Seattle, after her appearance at Bumbershoot earlier this fall, to play The Showbox Market on February 17. Vince Staples is also performing at The Showbox Market, though a week later on February 27. Meanwhile, pop balladeer Michael Bolton will appear March 16 at Snoqualmie Casino and classic rock outfit Kansas is set to jam at the Moore Theatre on April 29.

Finally, in case you missed it last week, Lauren Jauregui of bubblegum pop act Fifth Harmony came out as Bisexual to fans and fellow music industry peeps. To that I say, welcome to the growing family, Lauren!

Bernadette Peters at Benaroya Hall was truly a night to remember

by MK Scott SGN Contributing Writer BERNADETTE PETERS IN CONCERT SEATTLE SYMPHONY BENAROYA HALL November 26 It was a full house at Benaroya Hall this past Saturday, when Broadway diva Bernadette Peters took the stage in a solo performance to demonstrate what an incredible performing artist she truly is.

Accompanied by a 12 piece orchestra, headed by the legendary Marvin Laird, who was the musical director for Peters’ starring performances on Broadway in 1999’s Annie Get Your Gun and 2003’s Gypsy. The band was in top-notch form as Peters came out onto the stage in a long, violet-colored, sequined gown, singing “Let Me Entertain You.” Peters talked about her love of Stephen Sondheim, but also sang a few songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein, including South Pacific’s “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.”

Then it was Bernadette as a little sex kitten, who pushed it up a notch, laying on Laird’s grand piano with her legs in the air like an alley cat, singing the Cooley and Blackwell standard “Fever.” This garnered Ms. Peters her first

standing ovation of the night.

Ms Peter’s most recent Broadway performances were in 2011’s Follies (from which she sang “Losing My Mind” for the concert) and in 2010 she replaced Catherine Zeta-Jones in A Little Night Music (from which she sang “Send in the Clowns” for the concert).

Then she paid homage to her current drummer, former Mouseketeer drummer,

Cubby O’Brien, with a medley of “When You Wish Upon a Star/A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

She gave an incredible performance of “Children Will Listen” from Into the Woods, which she followed with a song from Company (a show she hasn’t appear in yet, but should), the always haunting “Being Alive,” which gave the show an uplifting finale, and the audience gave her a standing ovation.

More standing ovations followed as Ms. Peters came back on stage to remind her audience that she is also a children’s author. One of her three children’s books was 2008’s Broadway Barks about her dog, Kramer. Then Bernadette came down from the stage and strolled through a row of seats full of audience members singing “Kramer’s Song,” one of the songs that is featured on the book’s accompanying CD. By the time we arrived back stage to chat with Bernadette in her dressing room, she was clean and fresh and had already changed out of her gown and into black pants, black top and boots. Ms. Peters couldn’t be more charming and it was truly a night to remember.

But besides gifting music, it can also liven up that stale office potluck, or the holiday party your hosting in the coming days. Here are six newly released albums to consider buying, or spinning, this festive season.

24K Magic Bruno Mars This is Mars’ first album in four years and the first time he’s produced under the name Shampoo, Press & Curl, instead of his usual moniker, The Smeezingtons. Jeff Bhasker, Emile Haynie and the Stereotypes provide additional production on the project, which overall is a throwback to the ’60’70s funk era and ’80s R&B sound. The title track was released as the leadoff single, performed last month on “Saturday Night Live,” and the accompanying music video has already drawn over 170 million views on YouTube. 24K Magic is a party already waiting to happen.

Kylie Christmas: Snow Queen Edition Kylie Minogue It’s hard not to love Kylie Minogue; she’s the overseas equivalent of Madonna.

Starboy The Weeknd “Starboy” has been my jam for the past month and apparently that of millions of other people, as the new hit by Canadian singer-songwriter-producer The Weeknd currently sits atop the Worldwide iTunes Songs Chart and its music video is nearing

300 million views. The entire album, featuring collaborations with Daft Punk and Cashmere Cat, is being hailed by critics for its slick, groovy pop feel. Starboy is guaranteed to get everyone dancing.

Darkness and Light John Legend New daddy John Legend shines on his new album Darkness and Light, the follow-up to 2013’s Love in the Future. In that three-year timespan, he won an Academy Award with Common, “Glory,” the powerful theme song from Selma. Chance the Rapper, Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes) and Miguel are featured collaborators on the new album, which includes the leadoff single “Love Me Now.” If you want something low key to warm up to this winter, this is it.

Woman Justice Talk about a long break! It’s been five years since French electronic-industrial duo Justice has released any new music; 2013’s Access All Arenas was a live recording with previously recorded material. Four singles have already been ushered out from Woman, “Safe and Sound,” “Randy,” “Alakazam!” and “Fire,” though none of them have charted in the US. Expect a tour from Justice in the New Year, and in the meantime give this album a good spin.

Neil Diamond bringing 50th anniversary tour to Key Arena next summer

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Start memorizing those Neil Diamond songs, if you don’t know them already. The legendary pop-rock artist is returning to Seattle for a concert next summer, as part of “The 50 Year Anniversary World Tour.”

The “Sweet Caroline” singer will perform

some of his biggest hits at Key Arena on July 26, the same venue he appeared at in May 2015, including “America,” “Hello Again,” “Song Sung Blue,” “Cherry Cherry,” “Love on the Rocks,” “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “Heartlight,” to name just a few.

Diamond began his career in 1966 with The Feel of Neil Diamond and has released several dozen original, live and compilation

albums since, the most recent being this year’s Acoustic Christmas. He is a multiple Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kennedy Center Honors inductee, Golden Globe recipient and one of the world’s truest music treasures with fans scattered in all parts of the globe.

In addition to Seattle, “The 50 Year Anniversary World Tour” includes stops in St.

continued from cover Queen of the Night went to Season 4’s Latrice Royale who was the one of the queens that the audience stood up to applaud for and who actually had something to say that resonated with the audience.

“No orange man with bad hair is gonna steal my joy,” Royale said to the roaring crowd, after her splendid dancing, flagging and lip sync performance.

The event was hosted by Season 8 star, Thorgy Thor, who came out and kicked a stuffed head to the audience and asked the male receiver to come up on stage to drink a holiday shot.

The biggest upset of the night was a noshow by Season 4’s Alyssa Edwards.

It was great to see performances by Roxxy Andrews, who made light of being beat in Season 5 by Seattle darling Jinkx Monsoon. Andrews was sincere when talking about her home city of Orlando and the loss of friends from the Pulse Massacre.

Naomi Smalls was another favorite of the night whose appearance was highlighted by Thorgy’s story that Smalls once missed her flight and ended up taking a $600 cab ride and got to their next hotel before the rest of the queens.

Rounding out the group were the stunning Chi Chi Devayne, Kim Chi, and Pearl.

Speaking of Pearl, she did a rendition of the Santa rape song to the tune of “I Saw Mommie Kissing Santa Claus.” Not a good song choice! With a large female audience that was highly inappropriate!

What I also found outrageous was that

some of those said females brought their children to this non-family-friendly show.

Now with a family-friendly show they could really have made the amateur drag show even more memorable. In the contest that evening they had two Gay men,

one straight man, one woman and one boy from the audience each wearing a wig and walking the catwalk. Despite some daring moves by the others the child was crowned “the Winn-na!”

You get the best concert in town – Emil de Cou conducting the unmatched PNB Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s eternally beautiful music. You get a feast for the eyes – Ian Falconer’s witty designs lavishly executed with animations, saturated colors, and a sweet touch of nostalgia. Most importantly, you get the best choreography ever devised for this music – George Balanchine’s 1954

onstage children (and the audience) – Harlequin and Columbine emerge from one life-sized box and a Toy Soldier marches out of another. Our enjoyment in seeing real people negotiate the inflexibility of dolls – shown by rigid limbs and fixed gazes – stems from the dancers’ skill in using these limitations to create grace and drama, akin to reading poetry instead of fiction, or watching a hurdler instead of a runner.

Madison Reyn Abeo and Leta Biasucci’s delicate hopping duet as the harlequins, and Ryan Cardea’s impressive control over flex-footed changements as the Toy Soldier caused as much wonderment in the audience as in the Stahlbaum’s parlor.

Most of Act I is pantomime, however, with chatting adults and rascally children pausing now and again for social dancing, including a march, a gallop, and a waltz.

The fascination is in watching an array of little dramas among the characters – boys who tussle and pester, girls who skip and play doll-baby, ladies who comfort a child left out of the fun, or a father chastising a recalcitrant son. Even a creaky grandfather manages to hobble in and join the dancing.

Balanchine was a master of the Russian art of pantomime, so his micro-stories all make sense, entertain the viewer, and move the narrative forward.

production for the New York City Ballet, which has towered over the test of time.

Plus you get to see Balanchine’s intricate dances performed by the best company this side of the Mississippi – if not the Atlantic Ocean – along with a troop of dancing children from the PNB school who could charm the Grinch into optimism.

Act I begins with a holiday party at the Stahlbaum’s lovely home, with dances around the Christmas tree, gifts for the children and – here the story begins – a strange old man, Drosselmeier, who enters with dancing dolls and the mysterious Nutcracker, a gift for his goddaughter, Clara. This is the wooden doll that will come to life at midnight, to lead an army of toy soldiers against the Mouse King and his minions. In Act II the Nutcracker – now a handsome prince – leads Clara through swirling snowflakes to the land of the Sugarplum Fairy. There they eat sweets and watch all the Christmas treats come to life as Candy Canes, Spanish Chocolate, Tea, Marzipan, and Waltzing Flowers.

This is the traditional story – the one Tchaikovsky set to music—so it’s a wonderful dimension of our new Nutcracker to have Balanchine’s choreography match the intentions of the music.

Mr. B created many opportunities to show off gifted dancers, so we see some amazing set pieces built into the narrative.

In Act I there are human dolls to delight the

The story becomes less narrative – Clara and the Nutcracker Prince are the audience’s surrogates, being royally entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her world citizens representing treats from Spain, Germany, Arabia, and France. Now the story is about the pure beauty of dance built around three grand waltzes – the Snowflakes, the Flowers, and the Finale – all of which show Balanchine at his dancemaking best. The movement and skill on display in solos and duets is thrilling, but choreographic mastery, in my opinion, is the ability to move groups of dancers across the stage in meaningful, complex, and intriguing ways.

For example, the Waltz of the Snowflakes that ends Act I simultaneously addresses the nature of snow and the nature of dance. It begins with a single girl – in a gorgeous, fluffy white tutu – balancing on alternate pointes to the slow, quiet music Tchaikovsky uses to suggest drifting snow.

She is joined by a second girl, then a third, then a fourth, until we have a quartet of snowflakes pirouetting on diagonals across the stage, suggesting a snow flurry. As they move into the wings, four more girls appear in a new pattern, each one twirling onstage in succession to form a row, each in a classic pose bending over their extended pointe with gracefully crossed wrists. This lovely detail characterizes Balanchine’s layers

of thought – snowflakes together look the same but each individual flake is unique.

The joy of snow is in this contradiction which Balanchine exploits as the two quartets grow into four, and all sixteen dancers move in and out of patterns that suggest infinite variety in a building snowstorm. As you watch this, your right brain is registering delight while your left brain is doing the Rubic’s Cube of how it all fits together.

That’s choreography at its best – and it occurs again and again during PNB’s new Nutcracker.

This year I brought my two nephews – one eight, the other eighteen – and noticed that both were on the edge of their seats throughout. Afterward, I asked them what they enjoyed the most. The eight-year-old was all about the Candy Canes, and how the chief Candy Cane (Ryan Cardea again – what a guy!) who could twirl his hula hoop under his feet two times on a single jump.

The older boy was very impressed – as was I – with what he called “the Statue of Liberty Lady,” who, under questioning, turned out to be Noelani Pantastico as the Marzipan Shepherdess. She wore a soft green tutu, which, now that he mentioned it, is the color of the Statue of Liberty. I, too, was struck by her wonderful dancing, not only because of her dazzling precision, but because of the graceful way she lowered her leg a micro-second behind the beat, to both

emphasize and soften the end of a phrase with the tip of her toe. It was one of those beautiful, individual gestures that defy description, but which give such texture and depth to a performance. Hooray for the Statue of Liberty Lady!

Last year this production of Balanchine’s Nutcracker was a surprise – brand new, highly anticipated, even controversial, since many folks wondered if they could love any Nutcracker more than the Sendak-Stowell version that Seattle children had grown up with for thirty years.

That question was laid to rest with a cascade of rhapsodic nationwide reviews, and we’re now into the next thirty years of our new Nutcracker. This year, as the overture began and the animated journey through a winter landscape took us through the snowcovered streets to the steps of a brightly-lit stately home – and as we laughed to see a troop of mice swarm over the threshold, and sighed to see the animated little girl dissolve into a real little girl – I had that secure sense of meeting a new old friend, much loved and much anticipated.

Don’t deny yourself this deep, enriching pleasure – especially in a time of high anxiety, when we need all the stability and happiness we can find. PNB’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is performed at McCaw Hall through December 28th.

Celebrating 41 Years!

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge celebrates the Christmas spirit

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer THE TRIAL OF EBENEZER SCROOGE TAPROOT THEATRE Through December 30 While everyone, likely, is overly familiar with A Christmas Carol and Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey, playwright Mark Brown has come up with a twist that actually has some funny moments in it with The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge. It sounds like Scrooge is on trial, but that’s not exactly true. In fact, a year after his life-altering visits by ghosts, it seems that crotchety Scrooge is back!

Scrooge (Nolan Palmer) has decided to take the Christmas Ghosts and Jacob Marley to court on charges such as trespassing, kidnapping, and assault! In a snappy presentation by Taproot Theatre, there are moments to chuckle at while some absurdities are on the docket.

Defense attorney Solomon Rothschild (Bill Johns) has all these clients to manage as well as Scrooge-like Judge Pearson (Steve Manning). In fact, the judge is more Scrooge-like than Scrooge in this version!

But the course of the trial is a sort of short recap of what happened last year, so … just like the regular story. Scrooge gets to assert that the Ghost of Christmas Past (an enchanting Anastasia Higham) kidnapped him after she trespassed into his locked home. And Jacob Marley (Robert Gallaher) is guilty of stalking him!

be a brilliant idea of counter-programming against the regular holiday fare.

This is not a simple book to adapt. Not that Book-It takes on simple books! It has all kinds of adventures and a complicated plot involving double-crossing pirates and honor and treasure and doing right by your friends. It has sword fights and mutinies and cannon fire.

In the middle of it all is an almostthirteen-year-old boy, Jim Hawkins (a terrifically poised and talented Alex Silva).

(Daniel Stoltenberg) and maid Mrs. Dilber (Faith Bennett Russell) along with an assortment of others. (The actors play several roles each in most cases, with Russell bringing some of the most improbable fun with the randy maid!) The bailiff (Larry Albert) has to keep order of this chaos.

The script calls for running gags, including a major one for the bailiff, that run out of steam after one go. Mostly, though, the script feels fairly festive and funny, though not particularly innovative.

While I shall not spoil the small tidbits of surprise, the main thrust of the message

is that “Christmas spirit” should not be saved up for only one day or even two days a year. It’s a worthy message if a bit bombastically told. Taproot likes to try to do something different for the holidays each year, but there’s not a whole lot to choose from, so they’re repeating this from 11 years ago.

It’s a game production from director Scott Nolte, with beautiful (and silly sometimes) costuming as usual from Sarah Burch Gordon, inventive lighting from Kent Cubbage and spooky/funny sound design from Mark Lund.

It’s family friendly and at least you can laugh at Scrooge out loud, rather than chuckle under your breath. For more information, go to taproottheatre.org or call 206781-9707.

dies and a blustery pirate, Billy Bones (Jim Gall), draws other disreputable types to the inn to find Bones’ treasure map.

After Bones is handed the dreaded Black Spot, signifying his death is near, he dies and Jim’s mother and Jim find the map when they pay their inn fees from Bones’ belongings. Jim brings the map to the local doctor (Arjun Pande) and Squire (Eric Ray Anderson) and they all determine to go to Treasure Island and find where “x” marks the spot!

The Squire gets a crew together, with Long John Silver (Geoffery Simmons) as the cook. He doesn’t realize that Silver and others plan to mutiny and steal the map! When the ship arrives at the island,

desperate mutiny commences. Jim, lost on the island, bumps into Ben Gunn (a loopy and fun Marianna de Fazio), stranded by Silver’s crew three years ago. Gunn has learned to live off the land and has dug up the treasure and rehidden it!

Oh, there is so much more plot! It’s fairly dizzying. There is, as usual, a game and adroit cast, including Ian Bond, Tom Dewey, Tim Gouran, Gin Hammond, Benjamin McFadden, Jordan Whidbey and Ray Simon. Most take on several roles as pirates and “regular” crew members and watching them change into multiple sets of costuming (designed by creative Jocelyne Fowler), including shoes, is a dance in itself!

Another dance, if you are one who likes

to notice things, is how and where they move the specific set pieces around and around and around. There is lots of rope tying and such. I was given a little back-stage insight that they named the pieces so they could track where Henry and Bertha were to go during each specific scene! Ingenious!

The set by Christopher Mumaw is graced with massive stony cliff paintings that set the scene beautifully.

I am not great at noticing sound all that well, but this production has sound design

by Kyle Thompson that is really masterful and subtle, with levels in that difficult room perfectly tuned depending on need. Sometimes loud and booming, sometimes just the cawing of the seagulls.

The adapter Bryan Burch has done a solid job turning this into a stage play, though there are some clunky storyline leaps. Also, Silver’s departure at the end does not work quite correctly, and it might have been better to hew to the book, where he slips away unnoticed. But allowances are needed for an effort this complicated.

Director Corey McDaniel continues to impress. He lets the humor show through unexpectedly and while there are a lot of dead people on stage during the evening, even kids as young as six did not seem to be traumatized and recognized the “fairytale” nature of the story.

Most families can consider going, except those with kids under 6 or 7 being too young to sit through it – the show runs over two and a half hours. You may even want to go to the library and pick up a copy of the book to read out loud at home!

Dolly Madison to emcee West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays tree lighting this Saturday, Dec. 3 the season with holiday cheer.

West Seattle’s Hometown Holidays celebration kicks off this Saturday, December 3, with a tree lighting celebration from 4:30pm to 5:30pm at the Junction Plaza Park at 42nd Ave. SW and SW Alaska St., followed by a month of festive events, holiday shopping and free parking. Local drag star Dolly Madison will emcee the tree lighting ceremony.

Bringing people together and building community is a big part of why Dolly loves performing, especially for her West Seattle community. The ability to make people laugh, think and come together to build community has been a highlight of her weekly show at Outwest and is a big reason she loves hosting community events and fundraisers.

Dolly Madison began performing seven years ago and has enjoyed entertaining audiences in shows and fundraisers across the Seattle area. Prior to drag, Dolly (Derik) had a career as a dancer in shows such as Chicago (touring) and “Jubilee” in Las Vegas. In addition to her Saturday night show at Outwest Bar, Dolly is a West Seattle business owner with Cor Fitness Pilates & Gyrotonic.

Skillfully coifed Love Witch a magical cyanide cocktail

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE LOVE WITCH VOD and Special Screenings Elaine (Samantha Robinson) is determined to find a man she can love. She adores love, so much so she’s devoted her study of witchcraft and the occult into achieving it no matter the cost. Problem is, she’s spent so much time transforming herself into what she believes is the masculine version of the porcelain doll ideal that she’s lost sight of the line that exists between right and wrong. While her spells bring men her way, once she has them, Elaine quickly realizes they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, and the only way to make sure they don’t keep mindlessly pursuing her is to make certain they’re placed a good six-feet underneath the ground where they can’t do any harm.

Shot on 35mm, made with retro 1960s Technicolor purity, writer/director Anna Biller’s The Love Witch is a feat of technical wizardry, its production design, costumes, art direction and especially cinematography beyond reproach. But it is the cunning intelligence of the script, its dark, complex-

ly feminist mechanics, that make the movie sing. Biller has composed an eviscerating black comedy that pulls zero punches and is completely unafraid of pushing as many buttons as it can, holding a spotlight up to society’s assessment of the feminine mystique only to menacingly twist it all right on top of its majestically coifed head.

Is Elaine a villain? Is she a hero? Or is she a victim of society’s obsession with beauty and gender stereotypes? There aren’t any easy answers, at least, not any that Biller cares to answer. Instead, she offers up scenarios and situations that continually blur the line. Elaine is a serial killer, there’s no denying that, but the twisted pains and complicated circumstances that made her that way are hinted at throughout.

While the movie never forgives her actions, it does ask the viewer to understand them, creating an uncomfortable sense of mystery where right and wrong no longer apply.

This aura of moral imbalance is centered around Trish (Laura Waddell), a somewhat stereotypical girl-next-door who ends up becoming Elaine’s first new friend when she arrives in San Francisco. Like everyone else, she’s initially hypnotized by the vibrant, go-getting young woman, slightly embarrassed with how openly she

is willing to talk about sex, love and all sorts of matters of the heart. It’s easy for her to get swept along for the ride, but when the point comes where Elaine realizes how far the artifice extends and just how terrifically damaged her new girlfriend actually might be, the shock she feels is ruinous. Affection turns to horror, the idea that a fellow woman could damage herself so completely just to a please a man a shock to her system yet, in some ways even more terrifying, it is also an idea she can understand and relate to at the exact same time.

Biller, an old Hollywood aficionado whose love for all things Hitchcock, Sirk, Wilder and all the rest seemingly knows no bounds, has imagined a world that is retro and modern, both seemingly at once, and as such creates a lushly unsettling visual landscape that had me questioning what was going on right from the very beginning of the film. Echoes of Bell, Book and Candle, Arsenic and Old Lace, Marnie, Vertigo, Written on the Wind and even The Vampire Lovers abound, while a brazenly sexual streak reminiscent of The Wicker Man can be felt throbbing throughout. She’s littered the movie with bright pinks and comforting blues, every color under the sun popping with a jovial electricity that’s positively

shocking.

But, much like Elaine herself, her makeup always on point, her hair perfect, her clothes dripping in womanly élan, it’s all an act, a bittersweet façade that’s been manufactured to excite the gaze and misdirect from the actual central goings on taking place right there in plain sight. Much like Robinson’s sublime performance (think Kim Novak by way of Tippi Hedren and Lauren Bacall), the trickery is by design, the brutal nature of why things are the way they frustratingly are the reasons the character turns to homicide in order to find what she believes might be the perfect soul mate.

I really don’t want to say more. Biller’s movie is a royal, devilishly nasty treat that is as magical as it is potent, the potion the filmmaker has whipped up for all of us to drink going down as smoothly as an expertly mixed cocktail with a tiny pink umbrella, only here the secret ingredient is cyanide, not grenadine. There’s nothing like The Love Witch, and that’s a good thing, for if there were, I seriously doubt I’d be as captivated with this marvelous bit of murderous whimsy as I most assuredly am.

take leave from his handyman position in Boston and head up to Manchester to break the news to his 15-year-old nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking up residence in his deceased sibling’s house, what is most shocking to Lee is that in Joe’s will he’s named to be Patrick’s guardian, a position he is not even certain he is emotionally capable of being able to fill.

His reasons go back years, and it is why most in Manchester walk to the other side of the street when they see him coming. It is also why Lee’s marriage to Randi (Michelle Williams) came to such a bitter end, the unfathomable pain that confronted them simply too much for either of them to bear. Now, forced to decide what is best for Patrick, the still relatively young man must revisit these past tragedies to see if he can put them behind him and, in healing, become the sort of guardian and father figure Joe believed he could become.

Quiet, unassuming and direct, Kenneth Lonergan’s (Margaret, You Can Count on Me) third directorial effort is a startlingly effective melodrama filled with honest insights and even more profound observations. The emotions running through it all are stunning in their purity, events building to a potent, powerfully cathartic denouement that’s unafraid to leave some questions unanswered as characters continue to make their way in the world step by unbalanced step. Like life itself, resolutions are hard to come by, and sometimes one tragic mistake is all it takes for uncertainty to reign supreme and depression to grab hold to the point shaking it loose becomes impossible.

Slipping backwards and forwards in time, showing how strong the bond between the two brothers was and how close Lee was to Patrick, Lonergan manages to ground these relationships in an instantly recognizable fashion. He doesn’t have to spend long stretches of the narrative spelling things out. It’s obvious why Joe believes his brother is up to the challenge. I understood immediately how the connection between uncle and nephew could become frayed. Long before the writer/director reveals what it was that destroyed Lee and Randi’s marriage, the deeply rooted pain that both are suffering through still manages to echo loud and clear. There is a clarity here that’s con-

tinually profound, Lonergan achieving a level of naturalism that’s astonishing.

So is Affleck. As incredible as the actor has been in the past, as award-worthy as turns in films as diverse as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Gone Baby Gone, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and this year’s The Finest Hours might have been, his livedin, hypnotically nuanced turn as Lee is something else entirely. Disappearing into the role, there is not a single step that feels false or out of place. He moves between moments and emotions with ease, finding humor in the darkest of memories only to fall into emotional disrepair at the most unexpected of moments. Affleck is extraordinary, the movie owing a great deal of its success to him.

Not to say others do not rise to the occasion. Newcomer Hedges is shockingly good, while Williams is an absolute knock-

out in a pair of scenes that left me speechless in their catastrophic wake. Veteran character actress Heather Burns (Miss Congeniality) is also superb, her brief scenes as a single mother who goes out of her way to try and catch Lee’s attention sparkling in their vivacious, winsome need. Chandler, seen mostly via flashback, is also excellent, while youngster Ben O’Brien makes a vivid impression portraying Patrick as a child.

I can’t say a central subplot involving Patrick’s estranged mother Elise (Gretchen Mol) did a lot for me, a dinner scene between her, the teenager and her new husband, religious fundamentalist Jeffrey (Matthew Broderick), going over a bit like a lead balloon. Lonergan also hammers home Lee’s pariah status a little too often, especially after we learn about what horrors in his past continue to haunt him. I just found it all a little unnecessary, the point being made quite clearly early on so I’m not

sure returning to it on multiple occasions was particularly useful.

Not that it matters. Manchester by the Sea is more often than not a stunner, delivering in ways that defy easy description. Lonergan is fearless, going after the human condition in ways that are beyond compare, refusing to soften his points or offer easy outs for any of his characters.

This is a movie about life, its ugliness and the destruction a single unintended mistake can exact upon those both guilty and innocent. But he also finds the laughter inside the tragedy, light inside the darkness, offering up a coda of hope and understanding that, while purposefully imperfect, still allows the glimmer of a fresh new dawn to be a possibility worthy of continuing to strive for.

Intriguing Man Down a heavy-handed disappointment

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer MAN DOWN Now playing U.S. Marine Gabriel Drummer (Shia LaBeouf) is searching for his son Johnnie (Charlie Shotwell). Alongside best friend and comrade in arms Devin Roberts (Jai Courtney), he is scouring the streets of a post-apocalyptic America, trying to piece together the events that led to this devastation while at the same time mourning his wife Natalie (Kate Mara) whom he believes to be dead. They have no idea what is going on or why things have turned out the way they have, their only real clues hinting at anything approaching answers leading all the way back to the pair’s time serving in Afghanistan, Marine psychologist Peyton (Gary Oldman) potentially the key to unlocking the truth.

Dito Montiel is not a subtle filmmaker.

From his award-winning 2006 debut, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, to his highly flawed one-two Channing Tatum punch of Fighting and The Son of No One, to his 2014 collaboration with the late, great Robin Williams in Boulevard, the director isn’t exactly known for keeping his melodramatic tendencies in check. While showing great skill with actors, he tends to play up the themes he’s chasing inside each and every one of his stories to the nth degree, beating the viewer over the head with a sledgehammer as he goes out of his way to make sure all his points are clear.

In this case, he and his co-writer, Adam G. Simon, who also conceived the original story, are looking at what it means to be a soldier fighting in a war where the rules are not clear and the outcomes are constantly in doubt. They are consumed by how separation can affect a family and how brotherhood between those on the front lines can be tested in ways that are beyond unfathomable unless you’ve been there yourself.

In the process, they ask how decisions made in the span of a handful of seconds can have everlasting consequences, changing how both one sees the world and how it, in turn, now views them, all of it coming

full circle in the most unforeseen ways.

Problem is, the secrets Montiel and Simon are attempting to keep close to their chest until the last few minutes are clear to any viewer that’s even moderately observant, the clues the pair litter throughout their nonlinear structure pointing in a direction that can only mean a scant few things. I had the central conceit pegged long before the reveal, making the final third a close to insufferable bore only made palatable thanks to the commitment from the actors charged with giving all this nonsense some life.

But do they all ever commit, LaBeouf in particular. Say what you will about the actor’s off-screen antics, but when he gives himself over completely to a project his ability to vanish inside whatever role he’s portraying seems to know few if any

boundaries. It happened with Lawless. It happened in Nymphomaniac. It happened in Brad Pitt’s WWII tank thriller Fury and it happened earlier this year in Andrea Arnold’s extraordinary American Honey. That he does it here as well isn’t so much a surprise as it is a saving grace, his unvarnished take on a psyche in cryptic chaos startling in its visceral intensity.

Yet Montiel doesn’t always seem to know how to make the most of his actors. He cuts back and forth between time periods and conversations almost as if at random, the director so intent on keeping things in an unhinged mania that he often sends the film down a path of nonsensical gibberish it can’t seem to wander off of.

The scenes between LaBeouf and Oldman are particularly vexing, revealing far too much even when the dialogue passing be-

tween the two seems to say exceedingly little. More, the truths they lead to are heavyhanded and didactic, almost as if Montiel is so consumed with getting his point across he feels the need to spell it all out in bright flashy neon for those too dim to pick up on where it is all headed to.

Still, somewhat surprisingly, Man Down is seldom boring, and I can say it held my attention start to finish with very little in the way of effort. I just wish it all wasn’t so painfully obvious, because some of what Montiel and Simon are saying is well worth listening to. But it all ends up being for naught, and by the time the film was over I was almost angry I’d given it a look, the way it wastes an intriguing premise ripe with possibility and fine performances from all involved comes perilously close to being unforgivable.
