Celebrating 41 Years!

Fly union: A guide to worker-friendly airlines Special to the SGN from Pride at Work Heading home for the holidays? Taking off for a warmer climate? Or are you flying out on business?

Think about booking a flight on a union airline. You’ll not only get good professional service, you’ll help support unions that support LGBT rights.

It’s easy to do. Of the top seven US airlines, five are more than 70% unionized: Alaska (83% of the jobs are union), Southwest (also 83%), American (82%), United (80%), and Spirit (73%).

Their union contracts set an industry standard and give workers job security, decent pay and benefits, and anti-discrimination protections.

On the other hand, avoid Delta and Jet Blue.

Delta, the nation’s third largest carrier, has long fought to remain nonunion. After Northwest Airlines merged into Delta, Northwest flight attendants and ground crews lost their unions.

Just one-sixth of Delta workers today are union-represented: just pilots and dispatchers. Delta has one regional subsidiary, Envoy Air, where flight attendants, pilots, and dispatchers are union. And workers at a Pennsylvania jet fuel refinery owned by another Delta subsidiary are represented by United Steel Workers.

Meanwhile, JetBlue, the second largest low-cost carrier after Southwest, has never yet signed a union contract.

After a long organizing campaign and some major setbacks, JetBlue pilots succeeded in winning union representation in April 2014 by a 74% margin. But the airline has drawn out negotiations over a first contract for almost two years and has yet to reach agreement with its employees.

Airlines right now are taking in record profits – $24 billion industry-wide in the last four calendar quarters. The profit surge is made possible by the fact that fuel prices plunged a few years ago, but ticket prices stayed about the same.

That’s just what you’d expect in an oligopoly where just four airlines control 69% of total market share and the top seven airlines have 82% of the market, according to the latest numbers from the US Department of Transportation.

As One, by composer Laura Kaminsky, is performed by two singers and a string quartet. The brilliant stroke of this very moving one-act opera is that mezzosoprano Taylor Raven and baritone Jorell Williams play the same transitioning person, Hannah Before (Williams) and Hannah After (Raven). Kaminsky has cleverly woven their voices together so that the audience understands how an individual can embrace past, present, and future identities simultaneously.

Librettists Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed (herself a trans person) tell a riveting story about a twelve-year-old boy who wears a blouse under his clothes as he delivers papers, tries on his mother’s wet suit to experience a female skin, and strives to be the best at everything in order to conceal his secret from the world, and from himself. We see him blessed with a father who says “Be discreet,” shamed by a teacher who criticizes his girlish handwriting, saying “This is NOT what you were taught,” and threatened by a thug who snarls “What the fuck ARE you?” The libretto focuses on a range of events, each contained in a song or duet, that crystalize key moments for Hannah as she moves closer and closer to her authentic self. At the same time we come to understand the danger transgender people face in making their life-changing decision. As Hannah After sings about a terrifying encounter with the man who threatens to kill her, Hannah Before recites the names of twenty-two trans men and women recently murdered in cities all over the world, many in the U.S. and Canada.

Yet the libretto is so artfully constructed that the dire ramifications of intolerance are as much a context for the character we have come to admire and root for as they are commentary on the larger issues sur-

L. Zane Jones’ stage direction used the architecture of Seattle’s stately Washington Hall to great effect by having the Saint Helens String Quartet sit on the stage in front of the curtain while the performance space was at ground level where the sold-out audience of 200+ people sat in a semicircle.

G.W. Mercier’s simple setting – two silver doorframes on a slick black floor – allowed the singers to configure the doors as mirrors, tunnels, or portals as the story developed. Washington Hall’s high, curving balcony also played its part. Hannah After is introduced singing from the balcony, looking down on her male self like an ethereal angel, but by the end of the story – through medical treatments, tentative friendships, threats, fear, anxiety and triumph – Hannah After is on the ground floor and Hannah

Before has, so very gently and willingly, moved up to the balcony. This simple directorial technique dramatized the message of the opera: you are always yourself, even as you become more and more the self you always knew you were.

My opera buddy and I were really impressed by the beauty, simplicity, and effectiveness of As One. We were fortunate to be sitting near the conductor, John Keene (Head of Music Staff and Chorusmaster at Seattle Opera) and got a close-up view of his elegant gestures and lucid baton. Kaminsky’s music, played with confidence by the four women of Saint Helens Quartet, had a modern, melodic quality, with wonderfully placed dissonances as things go awry, and Handelian melismas in the vocal

Rouge brings live Parisian music to Seattle In the center of Seattle, you can walk down the cobblestones into a romantic hideaway that seems right out of Paris.

Live Parisian music of Rouge wafts out of Maximilien every First Thursday Art Walk night. Located in Pike Place Market behind the pig statue and past the Flying Fish Market, this charming restaurant serves French cuisine with a panoramic view of Puget Sound, West Seattle, Elliott Bay, and the Olympic Mountains. French acoustic band Rouge has collaborated with French owners Wilfried Boutillier and Axel Mace for well over a decade to create a joyously romantic, old-world ambience once a month, New Year’s Eve, and for special celebrations.

Rouge will also be appearing in the Pike Place Market at the Beaujolais Nouveau wine-tasting event this weekend.

Rouge is led by the petite, 5’1” vocalist Elle, who dances and engages audiences easily beside their tables. Top Seattle-based recording artists/musicians on accordion, violin, keyboard, and guitar fill out the sound.

parts when Hannah sings key lines about her identity: “… as I write/and sign each card with/ my new name/I look at the handwriting/my teacher would not have approved./Graceful swirls/Expansive ascenders./Crosses with curls./ My writing is not like a girls/or like a boy’s./It is mine./It is free.”

Every part of this short opera held the audience in thrall – a true drama on a very important subject. I’m really delighted to see how Seattle Opera is entering the larger community to bring important new works like this to new audiences. Several people at the talk afterwards said they had never been to an opera before but came because the topic was so important to them – and one woman even drove all the way from Portland to see As One because her daughter is a trans person. There was lively conversation with two trans community leaders, Mitchell C. Hunter and Breanna Anderson, who generously told their transition stories before and after the opera. In addition, the LGBT and Trans communities were invited to set up information tables for the patrons, and I learned about all kinds of outreach and support programs that are available. Seattle Opera’s Community Outreach Project also serves long-time opera lovers by bringing us into new neighborhoods and new auditoriums. I’d never been to Washington Hall before, but now it’s on my radar – I felt

privileged to hear wonderful young singing actors in such an intimate setting, and hope to see Taylor Raven and Jorell Williams on the big stage someday soon.

Economics has clearly put some pressure on the speigeltent folks. They’ve apparently realized that it’s enormously expensive to change all the characters and themes every three months and have decided to elongate the run of a show. That is simply smart, and it also allows for more thinking and planning and a smarter execution of a concept.

In this adorable new show, Lewis and Carol (get it?), a sweet couple of innocence, get lost in Wonderland and find themselves separated while the Red Queen Rizo tries to cut off their heads. Of course there is the ubiquitous “just missing them” routine, and this Queen is not so hard-hearted that she won’t stop to let people eat soup or supper.

The costuming, as usual, is a wonderful representation of Beauty and the Beast similarities of over-sized spoons and teacups and includes a smoky Caterpillar and giant playing cards. Kevin Kent, an audience favorite who will definitely interrupt your dinner if he can, becomes an odd combination of White Rabbit and Mad Hatter character who is actually involved in some revolution against the Queen. You might be recruited for the opposition.

Lady Rizo (aka Amelia Zirin-Brown) gets a lot more attention than the usual Madam-host, and her powerhouse vocals are put to great use. Whether it’s intentional or not, her wig and persona feel very much like Zinzanni imported Lady Gaga to the tent. If she’s not careful, in one of her fits of rage, she might pull the tent down around your ears!

They are aided by juggler/funnyman Joel Salom, aerial and contortionist Lea Hinz, acrobats and balancers Alya Titarenko and Gael Ouisse, and Duo Madrona featuring Rachel Nehmer and Ben Wendel,

who continue to add versatile talent (singing, acting, trapeze acrobatics) to their 10th show at ZinZanni.

They all have the ZinZanni formula down pat and continue to give every guest the best time. The servers/ensemble can adjust an order on the fly, find substitutions for picky eaters, and still perform choreography before serving.

Perceptively insightful Seventeen has an amusingly emotional edge

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Now playing Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) doesn’t fit in. Not that the idiosyncratic 17-year-old cares particularly much, especially with best friend since they were in elementary school-together Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) around to help keep her sane. But with her Adonis of an older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) practically the king of their high school and with their lonely widowed mother Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) holding it together by the thinnest of margins, it wouldn’t take much of a push for Nadine to spiral into an emotional depression she’d never recover from.

So it goes without saying the idea of Krista and Darian dating won’t go over well, not even slightly. Throw in a growing infatuation with resident bad boy Nick (Alexander Calvert) and a blossoming friendship with the shy, introverted Erwin (Hayden Szeto), it’s unlikely things could be any more complicated for Nadine than they are at this very second. But in two weeks it will also be the five-year anniversary of the untimely death of her father, Tom (Eric Keenleyside), and that might be one bridge too far for even this resourceful teenager to be able to cross.

The basic mechanics of writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig’s coming of age high school drama The Edge of Seventeen aren’t particularly groundbreaking, echoes of everything from Rebel Without a Cause, to Sixteen Candles, to Pretty in Pink, to Juno, to countless other genre entries echoing throughout. But the filmmaker has come a long way since penning the script for 2009’s anemically forgettable Post Grad, the level of growth and maturity that’s happened between the making of that film and this one remarkable.

Smart, perceptive, funny and moving, this is an invigorating little piece of cinema, full of rapturous insights that continue to grow in majesty and power long after the story itself has come to an end.

It’s the relationships, the dynamics between the characters, how they all relate one to the other, that allows Craig’s directorial debut to work as well as it does. As quip-filled as it all might be, as bizarre as some of the interactions might on the surface appear, the reality is so much richer and deeper than anything I could have

imagined they would be before the movie had started. The underlying truths lying inside all the venomous put-downs and snappy bits of banter are shockingly precise, the visceral intimacy of it all in direct juxtaposition to the snooty joviality some of the more cuttingly bitter scenes are cleverly paired with.

Some of the best moments are the ones that appear to be the most traditionally familiar as far as the genre is concerned, the byplay between Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson (portraying her laidback American History teacher Mr. Bruner) especially poetic in its blasé vulgar cadences. What’s best about it is that Mr. Bruner initially comes off as a disgruntled educator who’s given up on his profession only to in reality be anything but. Instead, this teacher trusts his students, gives them space to shout and scream, vent their frustrations, say things to him they probably should not, not so much easing their various pains as he chooses to

be a sounding board, allowing them to find a way to discover answers to the problems they’re currently facing.

The entire cast is excellent, and as far as the supporting players are concerned, Sedgwick, Harrelson and Szeto are particularly so. Even with that being the case, this is Steinfeld’s showcase and she knocks it clean out of the park. Nadine isn’t always likable, and even if her problems are easy to relate to and understand, the way she acts out, how she lashes at those around her when she’s unable to deal with her pain, that stuff can be hard to watch. But the True Grit Oscar nominee doesn’t care, throwing herself into things with absolute abandon.

In that way, Nadine’s depression and pain is depicted in a way that’s universally affecting, the razor-sharp verbal punches that the actress levies against all comers are laughout-loud hysterical as well as unpredictably upsetting, usually both at the same time.

It’s all still pretty familiar stuff, and

where Craig is going to end up taking things is never in any sort of doubt. But getting there is so perceptively charming, so much fun, it didn’t matter for a single second that much of what transpires isn’t exactly original. The level of authenticity is so strong, so on-point, I just didn’t care that I knew where things were going to go.

More than that, some of the characters did surprise me, the choices they make and the way they interact with others around them not always the genre norm. The Edge of Seventeen cuts deep, humor and tears bursting forth in equal measure making the movie a singular joy audiences of all ages are almost certain to delight in.

MAKING CHARACTERS COME ALIVE: Costume Designer Erin Benach talks Loving, Jeff Nichols and the power of first impressions

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer LOVING Now playing A person would be forgiven for not knowing who Erin Benach is by name, but chances are many out there still know her work. The veteran costume designer has authored a number of signature looks for some incredibly familiar faces, most notably Ryan Gosling’s, helping the actor craft a variety of characters in films as diverse as Half Nelson, Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines and Drive. She’s teamed up with filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn twice and designed costumes for all three of director Derek Cianfrance’s most recent efforts. Other features Benach has lent her considerable talents to include The Lincoln Lawyer, Cold Souls and Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River, all of them having a look and a feel suiting their respective worlds and narratives that are close to perfection.

I sat down with Benach to talk about her career, where she draws her inspiration from and what her working relationship is like with the various directors she has worked in tandem with. More specifically, we chatted about her authentic, ruggedly lived-in designs for Loving, the latest film from Jeff Nichols, her second in a row (after Midnight Special) with the acclaimed director. A docudrama chronicling the nineyear battle interracial couple Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) fought against the state of Virginia to have their marriage legally recognized, the film a subtle, thought-provoking wonder filled with insights and overflowing in emotional truth. The graceful lived-in simplicity of Benach’s costumes adds to the overall allure of the tale, the designer impact upon the proceedings not to be underestimated.

Sara Michelle Fetters: You’ve spent a lot of time working with Jeff Nichols at this point. What’s your working relationship like? How do you communicate?

Erin Benach: It’s certainly gotten to the point where it’s very easy for us to discuss ideas with one another. I mean, [Jeff’s] obviously been sitting with the material for a lot longer than I have by the time I start working, so he’ll have already thought through a lot of the elements he wants to see represented in the picture before we even have our first conversation. Stuff like, on this movie, the seasons changing, that was an important element for the viewer to be able to see the passage of time, and Jeff wanted that represented in the costumes.

He wanted sweaters and jackets. He wanted to make sure we could tell when they were hot, when the characters were sweaty. But he also wanted to make sure it wasn’t overwhelming, that the clothes weren’t dominating things. We had to find the appropriate balance.

I love working with Jeff because, he’s not only good at what he does, he’s fun to do it with. He just encourages everyone around him. He wants you to have your own ideas and add to the process. For me, I’m always trying to make things better. To have that room and space to do that with Jeff? That’s just awesome.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Once you know you’re going to be involved with a project, what do you do first?

Erin Benach: Research. For sure. Ev-

ery movie I’ve ever done is different. For Loving, we had so much historical imagery, we had the documentary, there was just so much rich material to sift through. At that point, I kind of knew I wanted to do a regional search of people who were in that location at that time, research the region.

What did people living there look like?

What did they wear? You find all of that by

ing, they can see the supporting imagery, and it’s all a major part of how will build the character up. A lot is revealed during the first fitting. It’s always kind of amazing.

Sara Michelle Fetters: It’s interesting to me, looking at the movies you have worked on and trying to grasp the time you must obviously have spent with Jeff, the time you spent with Derek Cianfrance and

looking through images of the place and the people as they were during that time.

Sara Michelle Fetters: At what point then do you meet with the actors, in this case specifically Ruth and Joel, and get their input on things? Find out what it is about the character that they want to see and will make them comfortable?

Erin Benach: A lot of that happens during the first fitting. I offer up all of my ideas, show some of my research and some examples of my clothing there, and then they come back with things they’ve learned about the character and they thoughts they have had. It all comes together right there, at that point. Their bodies are in the cloth-

with Nicolas Winding Refn, each movie is so different and yet, at the same time, each world is so authentically realized. A big part of that is obviously the costuming.

How do you job form one project to the next and manage to ground them like that? Manage to fit into the look and the aesthetic the filmmaker is going for in a way that augments want they want?

Erin Benach: That’s kind of my favorite part about the job. I’m always jumping into different worlds, and I love doing that, immersing myself during a project into that world. I think why I’ve worked multiple times with some of those directors, though, is that I’m not trying to tell

a costume story, I’m trying to help tell the story of the movie. My work is all about supporting the characters. I don’t want the movie to be just about the clothing, it needs to be about the characters.

What I’ve always loved about watching movies is seeing everything connecting.

There needs to be balance. Balance between the wardrobe, the production design, the art direction, the cinematography, the actors and the direction. When you have that, that’s when you really believe. It’s how you know when a movie is working because all of those varying facets all align.

Working with the other departments, you get to understand what the movie is really about emotionally; get a more solid grasp on the story as a whole. We all need to be on the same page. For me, I then need to find the right clothing to support all of that. That’s my job.

Sara Michelle Fetters: How hard is it, and let’s just look at your two most recent projects, Loving and The Light Between Oceans, to progress through multiple years? To show time passing in a naturalistic, authentic way?

Erin Benach: It’s very hard. Can’t lie. It’s hard. You don’t want to overwhelm things. You don’t want the audience to be noticing the costume changes as they happen. You just have to subtly shift the fashion.

You know, neither of those stories were set in Paris in 1917 or in New York in 1957, so it isn’t like fashion shifts happened rapidly. They had to be gradual. The waist slowly dropped down in The Light Between Oceans at the proper time, moving down and down to that appropriate flapper waist.

But it had to happen gradually, because it’s not like where those characters were was the center of the fashion world. That kind of thing happened slower and slower the further away from major cities you got.

For both movies, I mapped out the years. I wanted to know what the fashion of the time was but also what it would be based on where the characters in Loving or The Light Between Oceans were at any given moment. I had to really break it down.

Here’s 1957. Here’s 1958. Here’s what Richard Loving’s jeans should look like in 1960.

Here’s what they should look like five years later. It’s all mapped out. I have every scene in my head, if you can believe it, and I try to research what the characters would look like at any given moment so that the clothes gradually change at the same rate as the seasons do.

Sara Michelle Fetters: It’s possible I read more into the movie than what was there, mainly because I just adored it so very much, but it occurred to me, in the case of Mildred Loving, as she evolves, as she becomes more positive that her and her husband’s fight against Virginia is just, I felt like her clothes become bolder. That they take on more in the way of vibrancy and life at the same rate her confidence grows. Did that happen or am I just making it all up in my head?

Erin Benach: Absolutely. You’re spoton. You’re not making it up. You’re just a really perceptive audience member. It’s see ERIN BENACH page 8

Early on, we had a lot of desaturated color pallets for Mildred. But, later on, when she goes to that first meeting with the lawyer? Ruth wanted the meeting. She set up the meeting. She makes Richard go to the meeting. Because she’s now the one driving the action, I have her in that solid black sweater with that wonderful skirt because, for me, it was the moment when she was finally putting herself out there and I think we could all feel that emotionally.

It was a big moment for Mildred, and the clothing needed to represent that, but in a way that didn’t do it too loudly.

I also think, me being a woman? With two kids? I know what it was like to be 20. I knew what it was like to be 30. I now know what it is like to be 40. I think you become more confident in your life, in your decisions, and so I could connect with Mildred,

I think, on that level and I sort of tried to bring that into the way she wore her clothing and the color choices she made.

Sara Michelle Fetters: Speaking of color choices, how much fun is it to go from films like Loving and The Light Between Oceans and then spin things completely on their head for a contemporary fashionista psychological freak-out like Refn’s The Neon Demon?

Erin Benach: It’s crazy, right? Refn’s a mad genius. When I get a script like that, and you get to truly create out of context like that, it can frankly be just an amazing experience. I felt like I was more painting a picture. Color becomes such a huge part of every decision. I mean, I think of every movie as a series of distilled images inside of the moving image, but, when you working with Nic, that’s just taken to such an aggressive level it can really shock you if you’re not prepared for it. It’s all about that shine, that texture, that color. When you’re given the world as your option? You go for it. You just have to.

Sara Michelle Fetters: But when you read through the script, and you come across something as insane as that climactic pool scene in The Neon Demon, how do you even process that? How do you start dreaming up haute couture costumes befitting the animalistic debauchery of what transpires?

Erin Benach: I love to remember my first reaction. I never read a script in portions. I read it all at once. Making sure I do that, it’s the best advice I ever got when I was first starting out as a costume designer.

I’m reading the movie as if I were watching it, so I’m always taking notes, because that first impression is so valuable. That first impression isn’t always right, but there’s always a lot of insight to be found when you go back and look at them. They offer up great starting points and even better ideas for going forward.

Sara Michelle Fetters: What inspires you? What keeps you going?

Erin Benach: People. Characters. Psychology.

Sara Michelle Fetters: And what have you not done yet as a costume designer that you’re aching to? What are you longing to explore?

Erin Benach: I’m really excited to do realistic future. Science fiction, but real.

Something like Children of Men. Something like Arrival. Future without it being a comic book Marvel serial. Even a new Star Trek. That would be cool. The future. But believable. Authentic. Something tangible that I could wrap my fingers around and make people think was real.

Sara Michelle Fetters: And if someone offered you a 17th century period piece or a Marvel movie, would you still get as excited?

Erin Benach: Definitely. They would.

They would indeed. It actually happened to me a couple years ago, and I dove in deep into the 16th century. Learned so much. It’s all so cool.

But, it still has to be about the characters. I have to believe. If I believe, then I know I can make it happen. I can make that world live.

Overly tricky Shut In a simple-minded bore

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer SHUT IN Now playing Child psychologist Mary Portman (Naomi Watts) lives in relative seclusion in the furthest reaches of the New England wilderness. Still reeling from the tragic death of her husband six months prior in a car crash, much of her day is spent taking care of her invalid teenage stepson Stephen (Charlie Heaton), the 18-year-old left with what appears to be inoperable brain damage courtesy of the accident. With Mary’s clinical office right next door, the forty-something therapist moves back and forth with relative ease, her main contacts with the outside world being the patients she treats and her office manager and best friend Lucy (Clémentine Poidatz). She also chats regularly via Skype with mentor and supervising therapist Dr. Wilson (Oliver Platt), the pair currently discussing the pros and cons of moving Stephen to an upscale treatment facility located in upstate Maine.

With a major winter ice storm about to hit, things begin to go haywire for Mary after one of her former patients, partially deaf nine-year-old orphan Tom (Jacob Tremblay), goes missing in the forest next to her house. This causes the psychologist to begin questioning everything she does, not to mention her own personal sanity, especially after things start happening inside her home that defy any simple explanations. Mary comes to believe there is a ghost haunting her and Stephen. Worse, she thinks it might be Tom, and with authorities believing the boy might have died out there in the woods it only makes sense his spirit would be out seeking vengeance, even if his target is the only adult who ever went out of her way to show him kindness and compassion.

Considering the quality of the cast, the cerebral suspense-thriller Shut In actually has quite a bit going for it. “Stranger Things” star Heaton is an up-and-coming young actor who oozes talent, young Tremblay knocked all of our collective socks clean off just last year in Room, while any movie that allows Platt to cut loose, if even only just a little bit, can never be all bad. And, of course, there’s also Watts, the two-time Academy Award nominee a bona fide superstar who, having helped make 2002’s The Ring a bona fide international sensation and was more than willing to explore the cerebral nasty side

of human nature in David Lynch’s 2001 classic Mulholland Dr., is no stranger to trying to elicit a few gasps of unbridled terror from a wide-eyed audience.

The problem is, as terrific as the cast might be, as wonderful as the early sequences showcasing the horrifying auto accident and Mary’s daily travails trying to navigate its gruesome aftermath might be, the truth of the matter is that this supposedly haunting suspense flick is really rather boring. Director Farren Blackburn (Hammer of the Gods) does his best Roman Polanski imitation, utilizing a series of rather long takes, allowing cinematographer Yves Bélanger’s (Brooklyn) camera to explore the interiors of Mary’s home with unnerving exactitude. At the same time, he’s also a big fan of tossing in pointless jump scares almost anytime he can,

inadvertently diluting their power, and as such the one time one of these parlor tricks is genuinely required, the impact it had on me and most of the preview audience I watched the film with was disappointingly muted to say the least.

But it is Christina Hodson’s script that is most problematic. It relies upon a conceit that’s just not believable, and much like last January’s The Boy, the climactic twist around which everything revolves around is just too silly to take with even an ounce of seriousness. Worse than that, she establishes Mary as a complex, highly intelligent woman so the fact she never figures out what is happening is close to insulting. But even more damning? Hodson does a terrific job of showing her protagonist to be a strong mother and devoted therapist only to make those points moot as events spiral to-

wards conclusion, thinking a couple throwaway lines of dialogue are all that’s necessary to make it all right.

The acting is thankfully good enough that watching the film is hardly a chore, and at barely 90 minutes the whole thing is over and done with so quickly lingering on its missteps for any longer than a second feels like a decided waste of time.

But with twists of fate even Stephen King would blanch at and think are both too contrived as well as overly cold-blooded, Shut In never becomes more than the sum of its overly familiar genre parts. It’s a waste of time and talent, the only saving grace being the movie is so instantly forgettable the bad taste it leaves after it comes to an end thankfully dissipates from memory in the time it takes to exit the theatre.

Delightful Fantastic Beasts a magically entertaining spin-off

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN A&E Writer FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Now playing Before Harry’s parents James and Lily Potter were even the faintest glimmer in either of their respective parents’ eyes, wizard Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) journeyed to New York carrying a suitcase filled to the brim with magical creatures and an undying zest to see the goodness lurking inside all living things. It is 1926 and the line between the wizarding world and the human one is as tenuous as it has ever been. As such, bringing unlicensed creatures into the United States is a big nono, so it’s no wonder investigator Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) feels it’s her duty to bring the visiting Brit into headquarters for some serious questioning.

But there’s something more dangerous going on in the city that threatens to destroy any chance for peace between those with magical powers and the remainder of the world going through their daily travails without it, a growing terror that makes Newt and his suitcase of wonders practically insignificant. With the head of her office Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) tracking their every step, Porpentina is forced to go on the run with the man she once tried to arrest. With assistance from her bubbly psychic sister Queenie (Alison Sudol) and astonished muggle Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), it’s suddenly up to both her and Newt to stop this massive, explosively evil force from destroying New York, and with a gentle assist from the creatures living inside that suitcase the pair’s chances of doing just that are moderately promising.

Working from a screenplay and story by J.K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them isn’t so much a Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone prequel as it is a new look at a different side of the wizarding world, one taking place nine decades removed from today. With franchise handler David Yates back calling the shots (he’s been in the director’s chair since 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), the film is a surprisingly enjoyable, bubbly imaginative piece of fiction that’s far more magically inventive than I’d admittedly assumed it would be. Overflowing with new characters, locations and, it goes without saying, creatures of all sizes and abilities, the movie is a heck of a lot of fun, standing on its own as a singularly satisfying piece of a standalone entertainment that doesn’t require knowledge of The Boy Who Lived or He Who Shall Not Be Named in order to be enjoyed.

Not that Rowling and Yates aren’t going out of their way to lay the foundation for a new epic world, Warner Bros already announcing plans to make four additional sequels to this motion picture, each scheduled to be released between now and 2026.

There’s a side story involving a mysterious anti-magic crusader portrayed by the great Samantha Morton, the two-time Academy Award nominee wasted in a throwaway red herring of a role that only exists to plant seeds for events one can only imagine will blossom and grow in subsequent stories. There’s also a major subplot involving the mysterious Gellert Grindelwald, a supremely powerful wizard intent on starting a war between magical beings and the human race. He’s set up to be this story’s potential precursor to the Harry Potter series’ Voldemort. But the murkiness of his

intentions coupled with the casual way those tasked with discovering his identity treat the situation make him radically less threatening than he needs to be, and by the time he’s unmasked I’d almost forgotten we were supposed to be worrying about the wizard in the first place.

What the filmmakers do get right is the establishment of new characters and locations that feel unique and original, Rowling taking her world in amusingly intriguing directions that are almost entirely unexpected. Newt Scamander is a terrific character, a good-hearted flibbertigibbet who sees the best in everyone and everything and feels personally wounded when others are in pain. Redmayne is a wondrous choice to inhabit the role, shuffling his way with a crooked grin, taking personal joy in learning something new while the pain he suffers when things go wrong palpably affecting. Fogler is also wonderful, bringing a befuddled warmth to the wannabe baker Kowalski that consistently brought a smile to my face, his chemistry with the exuberantly electric Sudol sublime.

It is Waterston, however, who makes the most indelible impact, her complex, fiercely multidimensional performance filled with haunting depths that help make Porpentina a mesmerizing figure I can’t wait to see change and evolve in future adventures.

The Inherent Vice, Steve Jobs and Queen of Earth scene-stealer is magnificent, and I just loved how far she was willing to go to make her character real, not caring if her rougher, more aggressive layers might potentially have viewers questioning her intentions and wondering if she’s worth caring about. Waterston delights in the smallest detail, her delicately lithe frame hiding a courageous spirit ready to burst forth and make its mark upon the world. She’s wonderful, anchoring the entire movie in a way not a single one of her fellow costars is able to equal.

The first half of the picture is noticeably more invigorating than the second half, the climactic third devolving into somewhat standard superhero-style heroics that feel more akin to a Marvel knockoff than it does a part of Rowling’s mystical world. There’s a lot of running around, buildings getting destroyed and shadowy figures pointing sticks at one another with flashes of blue sparks meeting in thin air as if in a magical tug-of-war. It’s pretty obvious and more than a little perfunctory, and there is no question whatsoever who is going to end up coming out on top. Still, Rowling and Yates do play a couple of things close to the vest, and there are some situations where good intentions do not always lead to a desirable conclusion.

It does look astonishing, especially as things pertain to Philippe Rousselot’s (A River Runs Through It) cinematography, Stuart Craig (The Legend of Tarzan) and James Hambidge’s production design, and Colleen Atwood’s (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) spectacular costumes. But, more than that, it’s these four primary characters who I find myself thinking about so fondly, and I’m eager to know what is going to happen to each and every one of them next.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them may not offer up the depth and the complexity of Rowling’s other wizarding tales, but that doesn’t make it any less of a good time, and I for one am ready to study these particular magical creatures in greater detail with the release of future adventures.
