California requires PrEP education

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a law requiring that people who get tested for HIV also receive education about PrEP. The new law, known as AB 2640, was co-sponsored by the Los Angeles LGBT Center and AIDS Project Los Angeles
(APLA). It was intended to ensure that high-risk HIV-negative individuals receive information about methods that reduce the risk of contracting HIV, including PrEP and PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, during post-HIV test counseling. “We are extremely pleased that Gov. see CALI PREP page 12

Gay students most at risk

by Mike Andrew SGN Staff Writer In a report released this month, public health authorities in Nanchang, China, warn of a surge in HIV infections, particularly among university students. Nanchang – formerly known in English as Nanking – is a city of more than five
million people in southeastern China. It is home to 10 major universities. The report from health officials there indicates that the rate of HIV infection among university students has increased 43 percent annually over the last five years.
