Sure, there will still be a few dismal days to come when the haar is in or the drizzle lasts all day, but as the clocks go forward and the evenings get longer, the scope for meanderings around the city increases exponentially. As well as the areas immediately around the city, there are some stunningly beautiful places to walk your mutt right in its heart – try the network of cycle paths that criss-cross the capital or how about a walk along the Water of Leith? And how many cities in the world have an extinct volcano like Arthur’s Seat a short stroll from its high street? So put on your boots and get out there because this is one of the easiest, most beautiful and most accessible cities on earth – and it’s our duty to make the most of it...

he relationship between man and his dog is stronger than ever and nowhere tops more dog-friendly lists than Edinburgh. Come rain or shine the promenade at Portobello Beach, voted Scotland’s most dog-friendly destination, and Edinburgh’s parks are inundated with hounds of all shapes and sizes. In the last few years there has been a boom in businesses providing all your doggy desires, from grooming salons to dog bakeries. Last year Harry’s Gourmet Treats opened its doors on Portobello High Street, providing handmade, healthy dog’s dinners, freshly baked on the premises. Their treats, including venison brownies and black pudding and pancetta bites, promise high quality, human-grade ingredients. You would be hard pushed to find a dog-unfriendly pub in Edinburgh. In fact, several watering holes across the city even go as far as to offer dog beer and meaty treats for their punters’ four-legged friends. Duncan StewartJones, manager of The Earl of Marchmont, which was recently voted Scotland’s best pub for your pooch, says he endeavours to treat dogs as a part of the family. The prestigious Principal Hotel on George Street has gone a step further and offers personalised beds and a SF EDINBURGH

luxury hamper, containing homemade treats and toys, on arrival – but it is not for you, it is for your dog. It is thought that our hunter-gatherer ancestors first domesticated dogs over 25,000 years ago from the Eurasian wolf. For centuries since, humans have used dogs for work and companionship. Edinburgh is after all home to Scotland’s most famous canine, Greyfriars Bobby. The loyal Skye terrier, who guarded the grave of his owner for 14 years, was immortalised with a bronze statue atop a dog’s drinking fountain on the corner of Candlemaker Row on George IV Bridge after his death in 1872.

Dog statues Carved in white marble at the centre of the Scott Monument is a statue of Sir Walter Scott seated with his loyal deerhound Maida at his side. Scott also named a breed – the Dandie Dinmont – after a character in Guy Mannering. A bronze statue of a young Robert Louis Stevenson and his childhood pet, a Skye Terrier called Cuillin, stands in the grounds of Colinton Parish Church.

Our ancestors domesticated dogs over 25,000 years ago Bobby’s statue is one of Edinburgh’s most popular attractions, so much so that in 2013 his nose had to be repatinated as it had become discoloured by the many tourists who rub it for luck. Recent research has proven the undeniable benefits of owning a dog. In Scotland 22 per cent of the population own a dog. These households are fitter, suffer fewer allergies, are less depressed and generally healthier. But for many, the benefits are far greater. With over 220 million scent receptors (five times more than us) and 30 per cent of their brain dedicated to analysing smell, dogs can detect cancers, narcolepsy, malaria and even low blood sugar in humans. As well as aiding the blind, dogs have been enlisted to help Alzheimer’s sufferers, children and adults with a wide range of disabilities and even stressed students. During exam season, Edinburgh’s Napier University offers ‘pet therapy’ to its students in order to alleviate revision stress. Stroking and

The statue of James Clerk Maxwell on George Street depicts the physicist’s beloved Irish terrier Toby at his feet. He is said to have enjoyed the company of dogs far more than humans. A three-legged St Bernard-spaniel cross stray named Bum became the unlikely mascot of Edinburgh’s twin city San Diego in the early 19th century. His statue can be found at the King’s Stables Road entrance to Princes Street Gardens.

playing with ‘therapets’ in a calm environment can reduce heart rates and blood pressure, and set you in good stead for the pressure of end of term finals. But the bond between man and canine is one of mutual respect. When the SSPCA revealed that black dogs are discriminated against due to the colour of their fur, a common phenomenon in animal shelters known as ‘black dog syndrome’, the Scottish Women’s Institute quickly came to the rescue, knitting brightly coloured jumpers for the homeless pups. Recently a Lothian pup, Sweep, was awarded a PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) Order of Merit – the equivalent to an OBE in the animal world – for his devotion to duty whilst working as a detection dog for Lothian Police. In 2012 Sweep became the UK’s first poison detection dog, after being trained to find Carbofuran, a banned poison used to target birds of prey. He remained in this exclusive role until his retirement in 2015. It seems the capital has gone dotty for dogs, and its residents are all the better for it. 12 |

everal months after the outbreak of World War I on 28 July 1914, sports teams across the country were gaining criticism for continuing play when already the lives of tens of thousands of British soldiers had been lost on the Western Front. In the late Autumn of 1914 sixteen Hearts FC players travelled to the enlisting offices in Haymarket to sign up to the 16th Royal Scots battalion, making them the first British football team to do so. Seven players lost their lives, four on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and a further eight were discharged as a result of their injuries. Only three played professional football again. In April 1922 a memorial clock tower was erected at Haymarket Junction, beside the enlisting offices to commemorate the Hearts

In 2009 workmen on West Maitland Street discovered a large underground chamber when preparing the road for the new city tram line. Experts from Guard Archaeology were called in to investigate and soon uncovered an 80 foot long WWII bunker. On further inspection it was discovered that prior to this space being used to protect Haymarket residents from German air raids, the underground chamber acted as a pulley room for the city’s first cable powered tram network.

In fact, when Queen Victoria came to open the school in 1850, she remarked that it was far grander than any of her own palaces. Robert Louis Stevenson noted that ‘it has more the appearance of a royal palace than a building for the reception of children whose parents are in the humbler walks of life.’ Built by Edinburgh-born architect William Henry Playfair, the Elizabethan inspired Gothic quadrangle was built with the £220,000 bequest of Sir James Donaldson, publisher of the Edinburgh

He was an eccentric who, with no children of his own, donated large sums of money to children’s charities. In his final bequest, Donaldson requested that an institution to include 300 boys and girls, similar to that of other orphanage hospitals such as George Watson’s and the Maiden Hospital, founded by Mary Erskine, be built in his name. Children with the surnames Donaldson and Marshall – Donaldson’s mother’s maiden name – were allowed priority admittance, as were children with hearing difficulties. JOHNSTONS HAYMARKET OF ELGIN

Johnny One-Arm Haymarket’s Dalry House, now converted into flats, was once home to the infamous Edinburgh ghost of John Chiesly. When, in 1688, Chiesly’s lawyer, Sir George Lockhart (who was also the Lord President of the Court of Session), ordered him to pay a large sum of money to the wife he was desperate to divorce, he went into a rage and shot Lockhart dead on Advocates Close, just off the Royal Mile, as he walked home from church. Chiesly was immediately caught and confessed, saying ‘I have taught the President how to do justice.’ He was then tortured, his right arm severed, and was eventually hanged until dead at the Grassmarket gallows. His lifeless body hung there for days with the gun used to shoot Lockhart tied around his neck to serve as a warning to Edinburgh locals to obey the law. However on the fourth day he vanished. Centuries later, in 1965, workmen renovating Dalry House uncovered a one armed skeleton hidden in the roof. The bones dated back to the late 17th century and most likely belong to Chiesly – but how did they get there? SF EDINBURGH

The Grade 1 listed building was sold to Cala Homes for £22 million and is now being converted into luxury residential homes. Haymarket train station was the city’s first station and served as the terminus on the Glasgow-Edinburgh line. The station opened in the 1842, several years before Edinburgh Waverley, which opened in 1846. In the last decade Haymarket has seen much development, including new tramlines. The Victorian rail tunnels between Haymarket station and Lothian Road have been extensively updated in order to support the weight of a new £200 million office development which is set to bring more than 3,000 new jobs to the area

The iconic 300 foot high chimney remains as a vestige of Haymarket’s rich distilling history. When in 1884 Menzies merged with The Distillers Company Limited (DCL), several independent blenders began to grow frustrated with DCL’s vast control over grain whisky production in Scotland, and so joined forces to set up the North British Distillery on Wheatfield Road in neighbouring Gorgie. Now owned by Diageo and known simply as NB, the distillery is one of Scotland’s largest and the last in Edinburgh. In 2015 the distillery celebrated reaching 2.5 billion litres of whisky produced since its opening in 1885. 24 |

ONE O’CLOCK GUNNER

T

he tradition of fi ring a gun each day, except Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday, at precisely one o’clock from Edinburgh Castle, dates back to 1861. The time signal was fi rst instated to allow ships in the Port of Leith to set their maritime clocks before embarking on long voyages. ‘Before the gun was installed, in 1852, a time ball was put into place at the top of the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill,’ explains Sergeant Dave Beveridge, District Gunner, 105th Regiment Royal Artillery. ‘At one o’clock each day the ball would drop – but the ships’ captains complained that they couldn’t see it from the port, especially on foggy days, and so the audible time signal was introduced.’ The first signal gun was an 18-pounder smoothbore muzzle loading cannon fired from the Half Moon Battery on the eastern side of the castle. However in 1971, during one of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performances, there was an explosion which damaged the battery and so the cannon was moved to the Mills Mount Battery, where it is located today. ‘The gun currently in use is an L118 105mm light gun and has a range of 17,500 meters – it is also very light as the name suggests and can be carried around a battlefield with ease,’ says Sergeant Beveridge. ‘It is still in service around the world with the British military today, but of course ours only fi res blanks.’ Every day, just before one o’clock, a crowd gathers to watch the fi ring of the gun. ‘People are very interested in military history and the history of Great Britain,’ he says. www.edinburghcastle.gov.uk

RESTAURANT FASHION REVIEWS

Rojava 97-101 Morrison Street, EH3 8BX Sometimes, the story behind a restaurant can be more interesting and compelling than anything it can offer by way of food or drink, and never has that been more true than with Rojava. At the age of 22, Ali Sivan was a councillor in his home town of Kobani in northern Syria when he was imprisoned and tortured by the Assad regime for campaigning for more rights for the area’s Kurdish population. So many politically active Kurds were simply being ‘disappeared’ by the regime that when Ali started getting death threats he fled to Turkey. A three-week walk to Greece was followed by a three-month walk to the French border, where he camped for a further seven months, a period which included being bitten by police dogs during a raid. Eventually, six years ago, he managed to come to the UK and five years ago left Leeds to become a jobbing chef in Edinburgh. ‘I love this city, I want to spend the rest of my life here,’ he said. Having borrowed money from friends, he set up Rojava – named after the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Syria which contains Ali’s home city of Kobani – opposite the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The walls are decorated with frescos and momentoes from Kobani, and the food is authentically Kurdish. We started with a fantastic shared hot platter than included falafel, kubba (fried parcels of crushed wheat, minced lamb, onions), sarma (vine leaves stuffed with rice), cheese borek (cheese-filled spring rolls), gorgeous halloumi, hummus and baba ganoush. The main courses were lamb qozy (lamb on the bone, served with a tomato-based sauce) and chicken biryani, while pudding was a dozen cubes of the wonderfully sweet cashew and syrup filo pastries called baklava, plus lockum, the Kurdish Turkish delight. The whole meal cost £45 for two, plus a couple of beers, so take my advice and go chat to Ali – he’s an amazing man. RB 0131 478 4503 | www.rojavaedinburgh.co.uk

Wildwood 105-109 Lothian Road, EH3 9AN With over 50 restaurants in England, Wildwood was long overdue in Scotland. We popped in after work on a Friday and the place was busy with families, shopped-out ladies and couples. The menu has an Italian influence so we plumped for calamari and baked mushrooms, both freshly prepared and tasty, then pizza and risotto, in portions so huge we declined dessert. The food isn’t going to set the world alight, but with friendly staff and a good kids’ menu Wildwood does exactly what it says on the tin. MB 0131 322 8811 | www.wildwoodrestaurants.co.uk 30 |

JOHNSTONS NEW RESTAURANTS OF ELGIN

The Newbies

The SF Edinburgh reviewing team sample five of the best new restaurants on the capital’s dining scene

Reviews by Richard Bath, Morag Bootland, Hermione Lister-Kaye, Madeleine Smith & Susan Nickalls

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Hilton Edinburgh Carlton Hotel, 19 North Bridge, EH1 1SD Located on the first floor, this brand new hotel restaurant is certainly nothing to look at. Further disappointment met us at the table with an unimaginative and over-priced menu. Crème du Barry and baked Camembert starters were good, but our steaks were a real let down – fillet for me and T-bone for my companion. I love a rare streak, but mine was fridge cold in the centre and we sent both back. Good service, but sadly much of the food was cold and lacking flavour. RESTAURANT REVIEWS

The Empress of Broughton Street 25 Broughton Street, EH1 3JU The newest addition to busy Broughton Street area has the contemporary decor you’d expect from the little sister of the wonderful Lioness of Leith. They have an extensive range of craft beers and cocktails and the food menu is impressive. The burger was meaty and well seasoned and served with a generous portion of fries. The standout dish was the peach and prosciutto flatbread pizza, which had the perfect combination of salty and sweet. Definitely worth a try. NEW RESTAURANTS

Dai Pai 95-97 Nicolson St, EH8 9BY Dai Pai takes its name from ‘dai pai dong’, literally translated as ‘cooked food stall’ – the traditional roadside street vendors in Hong Kong that serve up large quantities of cheap wok hei dishes. These vendors are open all day and cater for every meal – breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. On a Monday night this brand new Asian eatery on Nicolson Street, right next door to the University of Edinburgh’s main campus, was bustling with students. Ordering from the canteen style counter was a challenge in itself down to the vast array and quantity of delicious looking food on offer, but, having held up a large queue of hungry students behind us, we finally chose and sat ourselves at one of the long tables. The beef chilli bomb and Hirata steamed buns, filled with braised pork and spicy beef, char sui (barbecued pork belly) with vegetable gyozas (steamed dumplings) on the side, freshly made on the premises that day, did not disappoint. These dishes were full of flavour, comforting and filling on a cold evening, however the real treat was still to come. Dai Pai’s speciality is their cakes. We ordered the gourmet Dai Pai cake selection – a selection of six sweets, which they call small. I can honestly say each cake was scrumptiously decadent, but this was not a dish I would call small! The bill at the end of the evening, however, was heartwarmingly manageable and we left feeling incredibly content. If I was passing again I would definitely pop in for rice congee at breakfast, coffee and a cake for elevenses, or a steamed bun and some of their sushi nigiri, maki or a sushirrito – a much larger sushi roll shaped like a burrito – at lunchtime. With so many dishes on offer, suiting all different times of the day and night, if I were a student again, Dai Pai would be a regular haunt. HL-K 0131 281 4947 | www.facebook.com/DAIPAIedinburgh

Educated Flea 32b Broughton Street, EH1 3SB Cole Porter fans will get the name reference to the song Let’s do It (Let’s fall in love) which inspired the owner’s other city eateries: Three Birds and Apiary. Popping in for a quick snack, we opted for the piquant feta and pistachio dip with corn chips, but couldn’t resist mains. The Malaysian vegetable curry packed a punch while the stuffed peppers demonstrated what Flea does best – superbly combine flavours to sate the senses. We’ll be back to try the mangorita mess and coconut & ginger crème caramel. SN 0131 556 8092 | www.educatedflea.co.uk

SIX FASHION OF THE BEST

Edin-burgers Fancy burger joints – rather than restaurants with nice burgers – are all the rage in the capital these days, so cast your meat pies over these six sizzling stunners...

Belted The Gilchrists are farmers from Dumfries & Galloway so all the beef for their burgers is sourced from their herd of Belted Galloway cows. It’s in a basement with a good bar, while the pared-back brickwork and neon signs give the place a busy feel. Most of all, though, the burgers are excellent – my favourite is the ‘Blue Shroom’, a concoction which includes blue cheese, portobello mushroom, rocket and garlic mayo.

0131 260 9748 | 57a Frederick Street | www.beltedburgers.co.uk

Burger Burger – which has two branches in Edinburgh – is a trendy, vibrant burger restaurant with an interesting USP: you get to make up your burger from the ingredients on offer. It also offers dairy-free and gluten-free options and is very firm on the provenance of all its ingredients, such as its Stirlingshire beef in a brioche bun. We liked the burgers but really loved the cheese fries.

Byron Byron attracted a bit of controversy when it helped the immigration authorities look for illegal workers, but this upmarket chain weathered an attempted boycott because it is very good. It fulfils its mission to ‘do one thing very well’, but at its restaurants on the corner of the Royal Mile and on Lothian Road it also does lots of extra goodies – I particularly like the alcoholic milkshakes. 0131 556 3444 | 29-31 North Bridge | 0131 229 0444 | 113 - 117 Lothian Road | www.byronhamburgers.com

JOHNSTONS BURGER JOINTS OF ELGIN

The Boozy Cow With branches in the capital, Stirling and Aberdeen, Boozy Cow is not afraid to be a bit different. The decor is outrageous, with graffiti style murals on the walls, the music is loud, service is friendly, cocktails are served in tin cans and the burgers are really tasty. Produce is locally sourced and 100% of profits goes to local charities. Leave your diets at the door and enjoy a really naughty milkshake. Think oreo cookies, nutella, peanut butter and even vodka if you’re feeling frisky – it’s a fat kid’s dream-come-true.

0131 667 7427 | 12-14 Chapel St | www.buffalogrill.co.uk

Buffalo Grill When they had a branch in Stockbridge this was one of my regular go-to options for lazy comfort food and it rarely disappointed. Despite a change of ownership, the standards haven’t slipped at this venerable Edinburgh institution, although a trip to the Old Town is now needed – but worth making. As ever, the perfectlydelivered burgers are the main event, although they also boast a huge roster of steaks and other dishes (try the jambalaya or the sharing platter). My favourite burger is the Tex-Mex themed Amigo, topped with the house chilli, jalapeños and sour cream. Lovely!

0131 226 6055 | 17 Frederick Street | www.boozycow.com

Bread Meats Bread Handily placed right next to the Filmhouse and across the road from the Usher Hall and Traverse Theatre, this busy place has a noisy, manic and youthful feel, so don’t come expecting to be able to have a quiet catch-up with a pal you’ve not seen for ages. However, the exquisite and entertainingly-named burgers (Sunshine on Beef) are well worth trying, and there are lots of leftfield combinations – one burger comes with cheese, bacon and pulled-pork. The portions are huge but – annoyingly – they don’t take bookings. 0131 225 3000 | 92 Lothian Road | www.breadmeatsbread.com

JOHNSTONS MY CITY GARDEN OF ELGIN

My city garden Gail (pictured with cat George) and Raymond Paul have been working together on their garden on Braid Farm Road for the last 25 years. ‘My husband digs the holes and does the heavy lifting, and I’ll do the rest,’ says Gail. ‘It works well. ‘We began redesigning the garden bit by bit so there are lots of different areas – like the quiet arbour at the front and the vibrant Mediterranean-style at the back.’ Brightly coloured mosaics, made by Gail, adorn the garden, including a decorative fireplace and small mosaic pond. A larger wildlife pond in the front garden has to be regularly restocked after visits from foxes and herons, and more recently an otter. Efforts to secure a protective metal grid to the pond by Paul have proved fruitless. ‘I am a bit of a plantaholic, so there’s an exotic mixture – it’s not just a one season garden,’ he says. 9 Braid Farm Road will be open to the public on Saturday 29 and 30 July from 2pm. uilt in 1807 as part of the New Town extension, the uniform terraces and leafy gardens of Gayfield Square are an idyll hidden away from the bustling Leith Walk and Broughton Street nearby. Located on the entire ground floor of a Georgian merchant’s house, with its own private access and front garden, this apartment was bought by Robin Jack and his partner, private chef and caterer Barry Bryson, in 2006. ‘Over the years we have done various bits and bobs,’ recalls Robin. ‘The rooms were originally very dark with blood red walls in the sitting room and a dark blue kitchen – it felt quite oppressive.’ The first port of call for Robin and Barry was to brighten up the flat using pale wall SF EDINBURGH

colour to bring in natual light from the large, six over six, Georgian windows. A walled cottage garden at the front gives this apartment a ‘cottage in the city’ feel – an unusual attribute for a New Town house. For Barry, private chef and owner of boutique event catering firm Cater Edinburgh, the kitchen is the most important room in the house. ‘We were lucky as the previous owner was a kitchen designer and so everything is very well placed,’ says Barry. ‘It is a real cook’s kitchen.’

O

riginally from Newburgh in the North East of Scotland, Emily Millichip, 37, has lived in Edinburgh since moving to the city to study Indigenous Religions and Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh fi fteen years ago. After finishing her degree Emily went on to study Fashion Manufacture at Cardonald College in Glasgow. ‘I have always had this design aesthetic in my mind, and going to college in Glasgow gave me the tools with which to create these things in real life,’ she says.

Established hierarchies and the structure of society is crumbling because of the internet Inspiration for her colourful garments comes, not from the pages of Vogue or Drapers, but from the people she meets and sees in everyday life. ‘I’m more interested in little independent designers on Instagram or people that I see on the street,’ says Emily. ‘I’m also a huge fan of 1950s trash culture and the whole explosion of teenagers onto the landscape back then.’ Emily’s tropical print Hawaiian shirts and kimonos have become her trademark, but in recent years she has also moved into accessories. ‘Making your own clothes is actually more expensive than buying them, so working with accessories liberates my mind from the financial strain of clothing – it flows a lot easier and I can play around with colours and textile techniques. ‘For anyone considering going down a creative path, I would say that established hierarchies and the structure of society is crumbling now because of the internet, so if you want to do something, you can just do it. You don’t need to wait for approval or validation.’ www.emilymillichip.com

FASHION BEAUTY

Summer prep To look your absolute best this summer, the work begins now

S

With spring well on the way, former supermodel and celebrity facialist Charlotte Connoley has some advice on how to look your best and prepare for summer sun.

pring is finally in the air, so it’s time to start shedding those winter layers. It can be a tricky task to coax feet out of winter footwear, but a little bit of time spent on them now will pay off once the sunshine and sandals make an appearance. Start by tackling hard skin on heels. I use a foot scrub last thing at night, before lathering my feet in L:A Bruket No 126 Vildros Body Butter, before popping on a pair of lightweight socks overnight to really let that moisturiser go to work. If you suffer from any nasties like athlete’s foot, make sure to dry feet really carefully then put a bit of tea

64 |

064-065_sfe03.indd 64

tree oil in between your toes. When you are starting to emerge from your winter chrysalis, you also need to think about brightening skin. A deep cleanse and exfoliation will help remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull. I like Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant, which is gentle on skin. To give skin a lift, Ermana’s Revive Face Oil, with its blend of plant oils, packed with natural vitamins and minerals, will help hydrate skin. You only need 2-3 drops in the morning and 4-5 drops before bed – then really work it into skin for a freshfaced approach to the summer months. Zen Lifestyle I’ve always been a bit of a magpie when it comes to all things sparkly, so I jumped at the chance to try out an Ombré Shellac Manicure at Zen Lifestyle on Hanover Street. With more striking colour combinations and glittery options than I knew what to do with, I finally settled on midnight swim, with lunar stardust for added glam. The manicure lasts around 50 minutes and includes the removing of old polish, shaping, cuticle work, a hand massage and a glass of fizz. By the end of the treatment my nails looked completely party-ready, and better yet, they remained flawless for well over 14 days, with no chipping or smudging and a high shine that lasted. GADGETS

I must admit to being ever so slightly nervous as I began the consultation which precedes the iS Clinical Fire & Ice Facial at Aesthetica on Randolph Place. Billed as a treatment to bridge the gap between a facial and a peel, but with no chemicals and no downtime, it promises to resurface the skin, targeting wrinkles and pigmentation problems. I needn’t have worried, the facial involves two treatment masques, the first is the fire part, but gives a pleasant tingling sensation rather than burning, followed by the ice masque to cool and refresh. Despite my sensitive skin there was no sign of redness following the facial, just a healthy glow and brighter complexion. MB £80 for one treatment, www.aestheticaedinburgh.com

THE LAST WORD

My Edinburgh Sarah Crowden, the actress who played Lady Manville in Downton Abbey and Lady Exeter in Wolf Hall, recalls her Edinburgh childhood WORDS BY SA RA H C ROW DEN

I was born in Edinburgh at the old Western General Hospital and spent every single summer holiday from 1956-1973 at my grandparents’ bookfilled house in Trinity overlooking the Firth of Forth and Burntisland. Wild strawberries grew in their garden and Sunday tea always involved potato scones and a cake. That combination was repeated every time my father’s mother took us out to tea at either Mackie’s or Crawford’s. Food, to this skinny post-war child, was hugely important, and my fondest memories of Edinburgh are coloured by it – black or white pudding and chips, smoked haddock, white fish in milk, morning rolls, Edinburgh rock, haggis, and Luca’s of Musselburgh’s ice cream featured a good deal.

98 |

098_sfe03.indd 98

There was also much swimming off Granton beach, at Cramond and in the pool at Portobello, with its artificial waves and fun-fair next door.

Nothing lifts the spirits more than the view from the train There is nothing that can lift my spirits more than the view from the train as it pulls into Waverley Station, the tall buildings and landmarks just visible. My mother, a St Trinneans old girl, has a faded certificate for climbing the Scott Monument decades ago, but unless fortified by a large glass of good malt whisky that challenge will remain unfulfilled for me. It was, all in all, a golden childhood.
