The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers The Scholastic Art Awards, Inc. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in 1944 to build a network of support for aspiring young American artists and writers through the distinguished Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers celebrates the critical role of creative development over the course of a student’s education. The Alliance broadly encourages artistic growth by providing inspiration for the next generation of artists and writers, a place for exploration and experimentation, a vehicle for recognition and scholarships, and entrée into the larger arts community.

Jury Procedure, Regional Students submit artwork in a variety of categories including architecture, comic art, ceramics & glass, digital art, product design, drawing, fashion, film & animation, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video games, and art portfolio.

Entries are classified according to media, and artworks by students in grades 9­– 12 are judged separately from those submitted from grades 7 – 8. Digital images of the Gold Key artworks will be sent for consideration in the national awards jury process. National award-winning artworks are shipped to New York City for the national exhibition.

The jurors consider originality, craftsmanship, design, and artistic voice. Gold Key and Silver Key artworks are installed in the Virginia Thompson Graves, Lula E. Rackley Galleries, and the North/South Corridor Galleries, Case Art Building, on the Barton College campus. Awardees, families, teachers, and principals attend the Regional Awards Ceremony on Sunday, February 10th in Wilson Gymnasium, on the College campus.

Regional Honorable Mention winners receive certificates and are listed at www.barton.edu.

From the Gold Key artworks, the jury selects five American Vision Award Nominees (Best of Show), The North Carolina Art Education Association Award, The Wilson Times Award, Jurors’ Choice Portfolio Award, Emerging Vision Award, Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park Recycled Materials Award, and Edward C. Brown Award.

Eastern/Central North Carolina Region Hosted by Barton College

Daniel Kariko is a North Carolina based

artist and currently serves as associate professor of fine art photography in School of Art and Design at East Carolina University.

Kariko’s images investigate environmental and political aspects of landscape, land use, and cultural interpretation of inhabited space. Inspired by his childhood during the civil war in the Balkans, his work is informed by interest in history and science, geopolitics, and the changing and disappearing landscape. He worked on several long-term photographic projects in his native Serbia, recording the aftermath of war. Since 1999, Kariko has documented the endangered wetlands and dramatic changes in the landscape in the Barataria-Terrebonne region of South Louisiana. Other projects include documentation of foreclosed housing in Florida during the 2008-09 real estate crisis and scanning electron microscope portraits of locally found insects.

Kariko’s work has been shown nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, and festivals, including: Noorderlicht Photofestival, Groeningen, The Netherlands; Yixian International Photography Festival, Huangshan City, China; Manchester Science Festival, United Kingdom; Rewak Gallery, University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Edinburgh International Science Festival, United Kingdom; Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia; Rijeka Foto Festival, Croatia; Fries Museum, The Netherlands; Festival della Scienza di Verona, Italy; Photon Gallery, Vienna, Austria; Royal Albert Hall, London, United Kingdom; ArtCell Gallery, Cambridge, United Kingdom; and Galata Museo del Mare, Genova, Italy; Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando, Fla.; and the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, Albuquerque, N.M. His work has been featured in a number of online and printed publications, including “Nature,” “Art Papers,” “CNN Photos,” “National Geographic Proof,” “PetaPixel,” “Wired,” “Design Observer,” and “Discover Magazine.”

Kariko received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La., and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts with a concentration in Photography from Arizona State University in Tempe.

History The Scholastic Art Awards, Inc., with the cooperation of civic-minded sponsors, is conducting for the 96th year a visual art awards program for middle and high school students. All 50 states participate in this program, the most respected and prestigious of its kind in our country. The Awards have encouraged more than 12 million student participants, recognized more than two million young artists and writers, and distributed more than $30 million in awards and scholarships. Local and national exhibitions and annual catalogs serve as a record of student achievement since the late 1920s, chronicling early work from some of our nation’s most accomplished artists and writers including Richard Avedon, Truman Capote, Frances Farmer, Joyce Maynard, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, and Andy Warhol.

The Scholastic Art Awards program aims to encourage student achievement, to recognize art teachers, and to celebrate the importance of the visual arts in the school curriculum. North Carolina, with a rich tradition as the State of the Arts, has three regional districts. The Eastern/Central regional district includes 62 counties from Winston-Salem to the Coast. Barton College has hosted The Awards since 1978. Students from our Eastern/Central North Carolina region create strong, innovative, original art – a reflection on the talent of our region’s young artists and the high quality of instruction.

Across the nation, about 300,000 entries are received each year on the regional level. Of these entries, approximately 25,000 are designated as Gold Key Finalists. The national exhibition will include about 500 winning entries. The extra teacher effort that The Scholastic Art Awards program demands is considerable, and we commend our regional teachers for their dedication and professionalism.

SPECIAL AWARDS EDWARD C. BROWN AWARD

During Edward C. Brown 37-year tenure at Barton, he served the College in a number of roles including Professor of Art, Chair of the Art Department, and Director of the Barton Art Galleries. Ed Brown initiated the idea for Barton College to become the regional sponsor for The Scholastic Art Awards, and Brown served as its director for 18 years. In appreciation of his leadership and service, The Scholastic Art Awards Teacher Advisory Committee initiated the annual Edward C. Brown Award.

SPECIAL AWARDS

2019 Jurors Jeff Bell is the Executive Director of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson. Previously, Bell worked as Registrar at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, as Gallery and Exhibition Manager at Contemporary Art Museum [CAM] in Raleigh, and as Museum Manager for 21c Museum Hotel in Durham. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Together with artist Warren Hicks, Bell created a visual arts podcast titled “Don’t You Lie To Me,” which explores a wide range of North Carolina artists. Bell’s sculptures have been exhibited across the state and region, including the Nasher Museum of Art, Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, 21c Museum Hotel, and Raleigh’s Lump Gallery. He has two sons, Finnegan and Teague, and makes his home in Goldsboro.

Cathy Hardison is the Executive Director of the Arts Council of Wilson. A native of Wilson, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing, with minors in Business and English, at East Carolina University in Greenville. Prior to her appointment at the Arts Council of Wilson, Hardison spent seven years as the Programs and Finance Director for Emerge Gallery & Art Center in Greenville. At Emerge, she managed two rotating gallery spaces featuring the work of emerging local and regional artists in a range of media. In addition, Hardison managed more than 100 yearly visual arts classes in painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and jewelrymaking, and she also taught community classes in painting and drawing to adults and children. Hardison led the Youth Public Arts Project, a public art initiative in Greenville, and also worked at the nearby Vidant Medical Center, providing arts experiences for adult and pediatric oncology patients. Deeply involved in her community, Hardison worked for the downtown revitalization group Uptown Greenville and for wrote for the “Greenville Times,” a local magazine featuring arts, food, music, and culture. Hardison’s past experience includes a job as freelance balloon artist near Disney World.

Benjamin Hawley, a native of Wilson, completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Painting from Barton College. Recently, upon recommendation of artist Susan Lichtman, Hawley furthered his skills through participation in the Mount Gretna School of Art Intensive Program in Pennsylvania. In his time at Mount Gretna, Hawley received instruction from internationally-recognized artists, and his work won a purchase prize. Hawley has taught painting and drawing at Barton College (Continuing Education courses), the Arts Council of Wilson, and the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount. In 2018, Hawley’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery or Blount-Bridgers House in Tarboro.

Audrey Mott is an Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University in Greenville, where she teaches drawing and digital design courses. Mott received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing at East Carolina University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Design and Drawing at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson. She currently teaches Foundation Level Courses in Drawing, Figure Drawing, and Digital Design at ECU, where she has also taught Color and Design online as a Distance Education course. Mott’s work combines digital visual information from her life into a series of digital documentary artworks. Her work has been included in juried exhibitions and solo shows at the Museum of Computer Art Gallery, in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Oakland Community College in Farmington Hills, Mich.; Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts in Fredericksburg, Va.; Associated Artists of Winston-Salem; Hera Gallery in Wakefield, R.I.; Emerge Gallery and Art Center in Greenville; Hampton Exhibition Gallery in Kinston; Greene County Museum in Snow Hill; Nash Arts Council in nearby Nashville; and the Arts Council of Wilson. At the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount, Mott’s work was recognized with a Purchase Award. In 2018, Mott was awarded the “Master Class” title in the American Juried Art Salon online exhibition.

Brooke Sides is Art Director of the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, where she leads the graphics team responsible for all signage and interpretive graphics in the park, as well as creative pieces for marketing.

Sides was previously a high school art educator, teaching drawing, painting, pottery, digital photography, graphic design, sculpture, fine crafts, yearbook, and Advanced Placement art. She also worked as the Program Director for the Randolph Arts Guild. Sides owns a small in-home boutique, B Sides Styling. Another important side interest is her jewelry workshop, B Sides Metal, the result of a passion developed while studying metalsmithing and jewelry design along with art education at Appalachian State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. Sides and her family live in Central North Carolina on the family farm named BatCrow Farms, raising animals and vegetables.

Regional Teacher Advisory Committee

The Eastern/Central North Carolina Region of The Scholastic Art Awards Advisory Committee makes suggestions for improvements in the regional program and nominates a jury of professionals who view the entries.
