A stunning drawing room and adjacent sitting room open into an exceptional orangery with a trio of roof lanterns and wrap-around glazing to proffer a wonderful interplay with the gardens and swimming pool complex. A formal dining room connects with the landscaped terracing, and a triple aspect study is equally notable.

The outstanding levels of specification continue in a voluminous double-aspect kitchen/dining room which extends out via French doors into an outdoor kitchen that makes al fresco entertaining irresistibly enticing. Superior Wolf appliances sit sleekly within British Racing Green cabinetry, while extensive marble countertops continue cohesively outside. Inside, a first-class island has been impeccably chosen, and a tremendous central column encased in burnished textured tiling houses a full-height

It’s there that you’ll find a tranquil space to recline poolside or to step out via further bi-fold doors onto the lower tier of the terracing with its idyllic dipping pool. THE WILD SIDE

Ben Fogle talks about his adventures as a television presenter and time in the wilderness.

Could you live in the wild? Could you survive without a phone, a TV, or a coffee machine? Could you forgo modern comforts to commune with nature and weather hostile conditions to live a wilder, more authentic life?

Ben Fogle certainly could. The TV presenter, adventurer, and author is known for his travels to remote and challenging parts of our world, from the summit of Mount Everest to the ruins of Chernobyl. For the past few months, Ben has been on a nationwide tour, sharing his reminiscences and experiences with fans and fellow travellers.

“My Channel Five series, New Lives in the Wild, is about people all around the world who have dropped off the grid to live in wild places and experience a simpler life,” Ben says. “It’s become incredibly popular, and I’m asked questions about these people and their lives dozens of times a day. ‘What are they actually like? What are the pros and cons of their lifestyle? Could I live like that myself?”

“So I thought it would be really interesting to put together a stage show and talk about how to find happiness and contentment in your life by engaging with the wild.”

Some of the people Ben met while making New Lives in the Wild have gone to extreme lengths to sever themselves from society and seek solitude in nature. But according to Ben, traveling to far-flung places isn’t the only way to encounter wildness in your day-to-day life.

sales@seymours-ph.co.uk | 01483 228723 | Seymours Prestige Homes | 13

Ben’s own relationship with the wilderness is complex. He’s a passionate lover of adventure and travel and feels an instinctive pull to the secluded life “part of me is actually quite introverted and would quite like to live in a little cabin in the woods with lots of dogs and my immediate family,” he explains.

Ben is also a public figure, with a job that involves TV cameras and self-promotion. As his public profile has grown, he has lost some of the freedom that many would associate with a truly wild life.

“It’s a really interesting point,” Ben says. “I am in the public eye, which means I do have to perform sometimes. Anonymity is something I lost many, many years ago. Some people lose that anonymity on purpose, and it’s their ambition to become famous and to enjoy that side of things. For me, it’s always been part of the job.”

Ben’s balancing act between wild spaces and public places began in his childhood, which encompassed both central London and remote Canada.

“I grew up in two worlds,” he explains. “I was raised in central London just off Marble Arch, but I also spent all my holidays in the wilds of Canada, where my family lived. I moved between an extremely urban environment and an extremely wild one. I love that juxtaposition, that variety. I’ve always loved living with my feet straddling those two worlds.”

Ben’s job has allowed him to keep that unconventional balance going, with months spent with his family in the UK followed by adventures in some of the most unreachable and wild corners of the globe.

“I am privileged to spend six or seven months a year in the wildest parts of the world. I have been to the Colombian and the Norwegian Arctic this year. And then in between, I’m back between London and Oxfordshire, and I get to enjoy the very best of Great Britain and the culture that we have here: theatres, cinemas, restaurants. That’s the equilibrium I’ve arrived at, and I believe that everyone needs to arrive at a personal balance between themselves and nature.”

14 | Prepare to be moved
“I’m not just talking about finding wildness in places like Siberia and Outer Mongolia, but also here in the UK, in Wales, in Scotland, and in Oxfordshire. I’ve visited people all over the world who have found ways to simplify their lives. The show is really about what we can learn from our relationship with the wild, wherever we may find it.”

Of course, traveling for more than half the year wouldn’t work for everyone, and Ben is often asked how his family cope with his long absences.

“I was in Antarctica for four weeks, which was hard for everyone, to be honest. I really missed my family. But it’s what I’ve always done. It’s my job. And I like to think that the stories I can tell my children of what I’ve experienced, the people I’ve met, the places I’ve seen, will make it all worthwhile.”

“They also join me occasionally – they’re very well-traveled children – but I don’t want to force it on them; I want them to experience it in their own time. If they love it, then I’ll be very happy and proud. And if they decide they want to become city bankers, well, that’s the beauty of life – you choose your path. My own path went from central London back into the wilderness, and I think whatever happens and wherever I live, I’ll always relate more to the wilderness than to the big city.”

Listening to a catalogue of Ben’s adventures is awe-inspiring stuff. He has rowed the Atlantic and beaten hypothermia and frostbite in a race across the Antarctic plateau. He’s cycled a rickshaw non-stop from Edinburgh to London, summited Mount Everest, flown a fighter jet in the Czech Republic, and swum from Alcatraz to San Francisco. Is there anything at all that he fears?

“I’m scared of failure,” he admits. “I had a lot of failings as a child. I always seemed to be surrounded by people who were better at sport than me; I was hopeless at academics, and I never felt that I was very good at anything. It’s one of the reasons I still get really frustrated by our modern attitude towards education because it’s teaching children that the whole of life is a competition.”

But Ben has turned this early fear of failure into a powerful motivator.

“It’s odd because, of course, the more challenges you set yourself, the bigger the risk that you’ll fail. And I think my fearlessness is probably a bit of a facade, really; it’s probably part of me trying to bandage over my lack of confidence. But what I’ve discovered is you can learn to control that fear. And fear is a human nature thing. If you don’t have fear, you probably really aren’t challenging yourself enough because it means you’re not risking failure, or you’re not out of your comfort zone.”

And it’s Ben’s firm conviction that anyone can escape their comfort zone, wherever they live and whatever their means.

“There’s wildness everywhere. As someone from central London, I still get a little buzz of excitement when I go to Richmond Park because there are deer roaming wild and there’s all sorts of wildlife, right there in the heart of the city. And I think that’s what’s really beautiful: you can find a little bit of adventure, almost anywhere.”

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

It has been a busy few months for local heroes Woking FC which culminated with a fourthplace finish last season in the National League. We catch up with chief executive John Katz to find out what’s next for the Surrey-based ‘Cardinals’

“It’s been a journey,” says John Katz, chief executive and director of Woking FC, as he reflects on the past season, which saw the club achieve its best National League result in more than 30 years, narrowly missing out to Bromley in the playoffs to finish a worthy fourth.

The season was dominated by the arrival of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, two Hollywood A-listers, whose big bucks helped push Wrexham to promotion, with Notts County taking the much-coveted second spot.

And while newspaper headlines, scrolls of social media posts, and even a Disney+ documentary made sure everybody knew of Wrexham’s new bosses, the North Wales wonders are not the only team in the NL to benefit from the backing of a crossAtlantic cousin or two.

For John also hails from the ‘Good Old US of A’, opting to swap South Carolina (for at least part of the year) for Surrey - all in the name of the beautiful game.

“I didn’t actually leave the US at all post 9/11, not for any other reason than I just didn’t think I needed to be anywhere else,” explains John.

“But after opening a new baseball stadium in Colombia, South Carolina, in 2016, I thought, ‘You know what, I am finally going to use that passport I got three years ago’.”

John, already a successful sports business professional with more than 30 years in management, had long been a fan of the English game and was eager to discover whether his commercial talents could be of use on this side of the Pond.

sales@seymours-ph.co.uk | 01483 228723 | Seymours Prestige Homes | 31

John, then president of the minor league baseball team the South Carolina Fireflies, booked a second trip with the specific aim of speaking to someone who worked in a similar sports business role here. He reached out to 40 would-be mentors via the professional networking site LinkedIn. Just one replied.

“But it was from the commercial director of AFC Wimbledon, Ivor Heller,” he says proudly. “That was enough.”

Ivor immediately welcomed John into the English fold, giving him the moniker ‘The American don’ and fuelling his determination to make his mark in football.

John formally began talks with Woking in 2020 and after agreeing to see out the season with the Fireflies, he made the move to Blighty in August 2021.

John’s arrival heralded a busy period for the club: a change in management, Darren Sarll joined in March 2022 and quickly reshaped the squad enlisting a whole host of new players such as Dan Moss and Ricky korboa.

It was also the start of a resurgence for the club that saw them move 11 places up the table during John’s second season.

“We exceeded my goals, which was to finish in the top half of the table,” John reveals, with more than a little pride.

“Internally, we hoped for the top 10 and then when we got to Christmas and did the double over Aldershot, we started thinking about the playoffs. A little stumble at the end kept us out of third. But now, we go again.”

John says the objective is as ever, finally making it into the football league.

“The two biggest spending clubs both got promoted, so I think a lot of other teams will be seeing this as their best shot and may be spending more. So there are challenges in that respect, but there are teams with bigger budgets than us that finished behind us. It’s not all about money – although that cures many things right?”

Established in 1887, AFC Woking has been a big part of the town’s history. Dubbed the ‘Cardinals’ – thanks to their bright red and white jerseys, the club has played host to generations of fans who now come together each week at the Laithwaite Community Stand.

“We have really great fans,” John beams. “This team especially has built a great relationship with the fans. It is very symbiotic, and it has been a pleasure to watch this year.”

John recounts how, following a poor performance away against York City, the players and the manager remained on the pitch and clapped until every away fan had left the stadium.

32 | Prepare to be moved
“I came over and watched games at Loftus Road and White Hart Lane, and even though it was just a long weekend, and allowing for not knowing when you’re supposed to sleep and when you’re not, it was a fascinating trip. Even before I got home, I knew I was ready to come back.”

“That,” he says, “set the standard for how this team would be and how the team values the support. Yes, there were some boos scattered in there, but come on, York’s a long way away.”

John also credits the team/fan ‘rapport’ with the fact that post-Christmas 2022, gates were regularly topping 3,000, which is good for morale and for business.

John says the club has, and is, working hard to boost its profile in the town.

“Venues like this cannot survive on 23 home games a year, so our relationship with the community is central to our survival and success. It’s not just a football stadium; it’s a place where the community can come together for an array of events and celebrations, and we might attract a couple of casual fans along the way who will then become regulars...”

And as we chat, it is clear work is well underway for next season. As chief exec, John’s job description seems to include everything from welcoming opposition teams to driving commercial opportunities.

“Actually, our manager, Darren said to me this morning, ‘I don’t know how your head doesn’t explode’,” he laughs. “There are meetings with everyone, the business manager, the food, but it is about building relationships – which is why having great local sponsors such as Seymours is so important for us. It’s about working with everyone involved. Our sponsors are friends of the club and help us to keep putting our best foot forward.

And while John, a father of three, tries to get home as much as possible to his South Carolina family, he has undoubtedly been made welcome in Woking.

“I love it here – actually Seymour’s have also been with me

from the beginning and found my first Woking home for me in Knaphill, and now I am in St John’s - they have been great and helped me so much. Actually, everyone has been so welcoming from day one. People start off going, ‘Who are these crazy Americans who can effectuate change in what they presumed we thought was just little ol’ Woking’.

“Well, we are not ‘little ol’ Woking’. We proved that this year,” John says emphatically. “We moved up to fourth place from 15th without a fourth place budget. And you know, they say it takes a village to raise a child, and I can tell you it certainly takes a community to raise a football team.”

And it is that community spirit that John hopes to foster by involving the players in as much outreach work as possible and providing tickets for under-represented members of the community.

“We want everyone to know our players and to have a chance to come and watch their town’s team. Every market has underserved communities – so it is important to us to provide free seats wherever we can, and our players visit schools and hospitals and of course, Woking and Sam Beare Hospice, with whom we work closely.”

So while John can bask in the warm glow of a successful season, the main goal is to get the club into the Football League – something that has not been achieved in more than 130 years.

“The dream is to provide an exciting product on the pitch that people can continue to get behind. We need to continue to build on the momentum of last season. As of now, we have already sold more season tickets to date than we sold all of last year.

“We want to make sure we give people something entertaining to watch and enhance the experience of fans while they are here. But ultimately, what drives all that is what happens between those white lines.”

Surrey and its surrounds are home to an array of stunning stately homes, many of which can be enjoyed by the public throughout the year. We go behind the scenes to find out more

Polesden Lacey

The Edwardian country retreat of socialite, Margaret Greville, this beautiful estate can be found just outside Dorking near the village of Great Bookham. Home to an extensive collection of paintings, ceramics, and fine French furniture, the house was remodeled in the 1920s by the same architectural team who had created The Ritz in London. In the decadent decades of the early 20th century, it was a favorite weekend retreat for many a bright young thing – in fact, the Duke and Duchess of York (later Kings George VI and Queen Elizabeth) spent their honeymoon at Polesden Lacey in 1923.

Today, rolling parkland surrounds the 1,400-acre estate that includes a walled rose garden, manicured lawns, ancient woodland, and landscape walks.

This summer, the house’s fabulous Celebration of Roses is back, enabling guests to soak up the sights, sounds, and scents of the rose garden that will play host to a series of installations by artists from the Camelia Botnar Foundation, as well as Lazy Jazz Sundays until the end of summer.

There’s theatre and cinema too – so why not pack your deckchair and enjoy everything from an open-air performance of Little Women or Romeo & Juliet to Top Gun: Maverick and Mamma Mia!

Claremont Landscape Garden

Steeped in nearly 300 years of history, there can surely be no better place to soak up the Surrey summer than this 18th-century garden. Hailed as an oasis of calm, it can be found on the outskirts of Esher. The splendid gardens, which feature a lake and amphitheatre, boast the design influences of some of the biggest names in landscaping, such as Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent, and ‘Capability’ Brown.

Today, the superb surroundings are nurtured by the National Trust and open to the public throughout the year. During the summer, they burst into life as families stroll, play, and picnic on the lawns. And when the sun goes down, the grounds resound with entertainment that includes a packed programme of summer staples such as theatre performances of Twelfth Night, Robin Hood, Romeo & Juliet, and Peter Pan. Additionally, there are live jazz performances, Wild Arts Opera, a new ballet from New Creations Collective, and open-air cinema screenings.

Hatchlands Park

Nature and wildlife are all around at this 18th-century red brick country house, which can be found in East Clandon, just outside Guildford. The property is surrounded by acres of buttercup-spotted lawns, woodland, and meadows, which are bursting with wildflowers throughout the summer months. The colourful parterre garden includes dozens of peonies and lavender bushes, as well as a wide selection of heat-loving plants, while the outer beds are planted with a mix of edible and ornamental plants to create a traditional potager effect. It is also worth exploring the Forage Walk, a route of 1,500 newly-planted native hedgerow trees that link up new parts of the countryside estate.

Once again, outdoor theatre is one of the mainstays of the dusk programme, where you can immerse yourself in a series of classic love stories such as Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. For the family, there is everyone’s family favourite, The Wizard of Oz.

During the summer holidays, there is also plenty on offer - bring the family and enjoy nautical games, with a straw bale boat and maze, games tent, and family trail.

Painshill Park

Painshill dates back to the 18th century when the impressive garden was created between 1738 and 1773 by the Hon Charles Hamilton. Inspired by landscape paintings and his Grand Tours across Europe, Hamilton designed a sequence of breathtaking vistas and follies to surprise and delight visitors.

Today, the park, which can be found in Cobham, is run by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who work round-the-clock to keep the gardens in tip-top condition for the 250,000 visitors who pass through the gates each year.

During the summer season, the park positively erupts into an entertainment hotspot thanks to its eclectic mix of day and night activities. There are wellbeing weekends, calligraphy workshops, as well as art trails and an artisan market. After hours, the stage is set for a whole raft of attractions that include theatre performances of Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, The Ugly Duckling, and Pride & Prejudice; alongside music from the Jon Bon Jovi Experience, Elite Elton, as well as Artisan Jazz to help you while away the warm days in the meadow.

MAKE A SPLASH

If you have been getting a bit hot and bothered this summer, Prestige Homes has the perfect pool inspiration to help you keep cool, calm and collected. Dive in!

It is estimated that there are nearly 250,000 UK homes boasting either an indoor or outdoor private swimming pool, with another 2,500 being installed every year.

Once viewed as a privilege for only the upper echelons of society, pools can now be enjoyed in myriad settings, available to suit a wide range of spaces and budgets.

There is no doubt that a swimming pool still exudes luxury and sophistication, and there is no shortage of added extras, fixtures, and fittings that can be added to give your pool that extra pizazz.

If you are planning to sell your home and you have a pool, it can be a selling point, but whether it adds value to your home will depend on a number of factors:

Is the pool child-friendly?

If your pool is child-friendly, it can appeal to buyers who have young children or plan to have them in the future. They may appreciate the safety and convenience of having a pool for their children to use in the safety and security of their own home. As such, you may want to showcase the safety features of your pool, such as fences, gates, alarms, and covers you may have installed. Does it have a cover?

A clean and well-maintained pool can give a good impression to buyers, so a cover is essential for keeping your pool clean and attractive. It can also help reduce evaporation, heat loss, and chemical use in your pool, which can lower your running costs and environmental impact. To add value, you may want to choose a cover that is easy to use, durable, and attractive to look at.

Is it expensive to run?

A pool can be affordable to run, especially if it is small, unheated, or well-maintained. Buyers may not mind the running costs of your pool if they see the value and enjoyment that it can offer. One of the main factors that affect the running costs of your pool is the heating system. Different types of heating systems are available for pools, such as oil-fired boilers, air source heat pumps, solar panels, electric heaters, or gas heaters, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, environmental impact, installation cost, and running cost.

Depending on the type of pool you have or are looking to install, you may also want to highlight the benefits of your chosen heating system to buyers, such as how it saves money, reduces the carbon footprint, or extends the swimming season.

Does it take up much of the garden?

A pool can take up a reasonable amount of space in your garden, depending on its size and shape. You need to consider how much space you have left for other features, such as plants, furniture, or play areas, and how much space you are willing to sacrifice for a pool. To make it more attractive to buyers, you may also want to enhance your pool’s appeal by adding some landscaping elements, such as plants, rocks, waterfalls, or lighting.

An indoor pool can offer you more privacy, comfort, and convenience, as you can use it all year round regardless of the weather. It can also add value and attractiveness to your home, as it requires less heating and covering than an outdoor pool.

So whether you’re a homeowner with a pool or have a pool at the top of your wishlist for your house-hunting dreams, Seymours Prestige Homes are certain to have something to catch your eye.

EVERYTHING STOPS FOR TEA...

National Afternoon Tea Week takes place this year from 7th to 13th August. But with so many fabulous Surrey venues offering such a tasty mix of sweet treats, you would surely be forgiven for making every week afternoon tea week!

According to the British Museum, the practice of taking tea in the afternoon was introduced into the English court by the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, sometime around 1840. The story goes that owing to increasing urbanization and the introduction of gas lights (which meant the nights could last longer), the evening meal began to shift to later in the evening. However, the Duchess of Bedford, who also happened to be one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, was having none of it. She revealed she became despondent during the period between lunch and dinner, complaining of a ‘sinking feeling’ which came on about 5 pm.

One day, she requested that some tea, bread and butter, and cake be brought to her room in the late afternoon to quell the pangs. The ‘snack’ caught on, and soon anyone who was worth their salt in Victorian high society was tucking into tea.

It wasn’t long before all the best-known establishments began offering the dainty mix of sandwiches, scones, and pastries, with the trend hitting its heyday in the 1930s with at least one tea room in every town.

Today, it is synonymous with glamour and sophistication as these Surrey salons more than demonstrate...

Barnett Hill

The hotel can also accommodate specific dietary requests, including vegetarian or gluten-free options (although the team does ask that you contact them 72 hours in advance).

Sandwiches include Scottish smoked salmon and chive crème fraîche, and cucumber and poppy seed cream cheese, while delicacies such as Summer Berry Eton Mess and Strawberry and Custard Tart grace the pastry menu.
