STRATEGY HELPS SHAPE CITY’S ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Developing the future of active transport such as walking and cycling on Redlands Coast is at the core of the Draft Redlands Coast Active Transport Strategy 2025–2046.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the draft plan – endorsed by Council at yesterday’s general meeting – would head to public consultation later this month.
“The active transport consultation will allow residents, stakeholders, and the wider community to help shape the future of walking and riding a cycle or scooter across the city,” she said.
“Encouraging more people to walk and ride not only reduces congestion and pollution but also helps build thriving, vibrant communities.”
The Mayor said the draft strategy presented a timely vision to transform how people moved around Redlands Coast as the city prepared for significant population, employment and visitor number growth over the next two decades.
“The active transport draft strategy offers a unique opportunity to reimagine travel for our residents and visitors by creating a more connected and inclusive network of walking and riding facilities, particularly within five kilometres of our major destinations,” she said.
Transport Portfolio Councillor Shane Rendalls said one of the key reasons for developing the draft strategy was to cater for the Redlands Coast population of tomorrow, including by increasing the range of travel options, especially for people who don’t drive.
“With the number of people living in the city expected to increase by 50,000 people and another 18,000 people forecast to be working within our borders over the next 20 years, effective alternatives to car travel will be required to help take pressure off the road network,” Cr Rendalls said.
WHAT: Draft Redlands Coast Active Transport Strategy 2025–2046.
WHEN: the draft plan will enter a community engagement phase from 30 June to 24 July.
DETAIL: Consultation will allow residents, stakeholders, and the wider community to help shape the future of walking and riding a cycle or scooter across Redlands Coast
ROOF RESTORATIONS
BEFORE AFTER
All roofs age over time. After around 15 years, tile roofs deteriorate to the point where a restoration should be considered. At this age, colour starts to fade, ridge capping becomes brittle, lichen and mould can grow, and tiles become harder to clean.
The appearance of your home suffers and your roof is more likely to develop leaks.
Andy Necklen fron A&E Neclen Roof Restorations has over 35 years experience in the painting trade. He uses only premium quality products for his restorations and offers a guarantee on all workmanship and materials.
Andy is an owner/operator and doesn’t employ salespeople or contractors so costs are kept to a minimum, which means savings for you!

CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY
This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports.
FORWARD THINKING URGED ON CITY’S TRANSPORT AND ACCESS
As part of a newly endorsed Council strategy, the community will have input on how the city can provide more sustainable, equitable and efficient access to its key destinations into the future.
Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.
Redland City Council endorsed the Draft Redlands Coast Access and Parking Strategy at yesterday’s general meeting.
“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the strategy, which will go to public consultation in August, provides a blueprint for managing access and parking as the city prepares for future growth.
“The strategy is about giving people better choices and making sure the city’s destinations are safer, more inviting, and easier to access by all modes of transport,” the Mayor said.
Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.
“Redlands Coast is home to vibrant villages, town centres and destinations that play a vital role in our local economy and lifestyle.
Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.
“As our population grows and travel behaviour changes, it’s essential that we move towards a more balanced, accessible and sustainable transport system –one that works for everyone, not just those who drive.”
He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).
Transport Portfolio Councillor Shane Rendalls said that as Redlands Coast evolved, so too must its local transport network.
“There is much that can be done to improve the efficiency of car parking in the city to reflect people’s access needs, such as through management, regulation, and compliance,” Cr Rendalls said.
Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum. “The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”
“There is scope to better use car parking to improve access and turnover. “Destinations can be made more inviting and safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with disabilities, with space being allocated to enable improved access by public transport operators, for drop offs and ride share.”

JUST IMAGINE WHAT YOU CAN DO THESE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
HOLIDAY FUN AT BRICKS N FUN
The upcoming school holidays will kick-off on Redlands Coast with a big dash of imagination and a birthday party.
Getting the holidays off to a colourful start, Imagine Live! will be at Redland Performing Arts Centre from 26 to 28 June.
The show is a celebration of creativity, friendship and our precious natural world. With the help of the audience, performers play and sing their way through the pages of Alison Lester’s iconic best-selling book Imagine. You can even bring your grown-up for free to the Saturday performance.
On Monday 30 June, a morning ‘Party in the Park’ will be held at Redland Showgrounds, Cleveland, to celebrate the 10th birthday of the State Library initiative First 5 Forever.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said it would be a wonderful way for young families to enjoy the start of the holidays.
“The First 5 Forever program continues to be a popular part of the activities at our Redland City Libraries with weekly Toddler Time, Baby Time and Story Time sessions,” she said.
“As well as the party in the park, there will be special events held at our mainland libraries the same week.
“These events are recommended for kids aged 0 to 8 years, so it is a great chance for some older siblings to celebrate with First 5-ers during the school holidays.”
All activities listed are offered at a low cost or free of charge but may require bookings prior to attendance. Please note a waiting list is current for the First 5 Forever birthday party on 30 June. For further details and booking information visit www.redland.qld.gov.au/ SchoolHolidayActivities.
