CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY

CRISAFULLI GOVERNMENT PRIORITISES EARLY CHILDHOOD UNDER PROTECTION SCHEME

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports. Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering the strongest child protection system in the nation to help keep Queensland children safe by fast-tracking requirements for the early childhood sector to investigate and report suspicious conduct to deliver stronger protections for Queensland children.

The Reportable Conduct Scheme – a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse back in 2017

– is due to commence from 1 July 2026, with implementation over three stages from mid2026 to mid-2027.

TAKING ENROLMENTS FOR 2026

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

After failing to act for seven years, the former Labor Government planned to leave early childhood education, care and child-minding services to be the last sector to be included in the scheme.

The Crisafulli Government is accelerating these timeframes to require the early childhood sector to comply with the Reportable Conduct Scheme as soon as possible, from 1 July 2026, and boost protection for Queensland children.

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

Amendments will be brought to the Queensland Parliament in coming months to give effect to this change.

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

The scheme requires organisations to report and investigate concerns regarding the conduct of staff and volunteers in relation to their work with children.

Reportable conduct ranges from ill-treatment or significant neglect of a child, through to physical harm and sexual offences.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

Where there are concerns the alleged conduct may constitute a criminal offence, the organisation must also promptly report the matter to the police.

The scheme will prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children by holding organisations accountable when concerns are raised regarding the behaviour of their employees, contractors, or volunteers.

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum. “The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington said the changes would deliver the protections needed to keep young Queensland children safe.

South East Queensland’s best and brightest in training and skills have been recognised at the 2025 Queensland Training Awards regional final – with local apprentices, students and employers leading the way in rebuilding the State’s skilled workforce. Winners came from across industries vital to Queensland’s economy, including construction, health, and community services – as the Crisafulli Government drives forward its commitment to restoring the State’s training and employment systems after a decade of neglect.

Top Winners Include:

training in retail, hospitality and business, supporting 35 trainees annually and helping people from diverse backgrounds into lasting jobs.

Ari Travis from Logan, named Vocational Student of the Year for turning his lived experience into leadership through a Certificate IV in Youth Work and his advocacy for at-risk youth with Logan-based organisation Everything Suarve.

The regional awards are part of the broader Queensland Training Awards program, which saw 743 nominations across the State – a clear sign of the talent and ambition thriving under the Crisafulli Government’s renewed focus on skills and opportunity.

“These awards aren’t just about recognition. They’re about celebrating the people who are building Queensland’s future,” Minister Bates said. To learn more about the Queensland Training Awards and view the full list of regional finalists, visit desbt.qld. gov.au/training/qta/winners-and-finalists.

ENTERTAINMENT & DINING

ANGLERS LURED IN TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF FISH STOCKING SCHEME

The Crisafulli Government is marking 25 years of one of the most successful recreational fishing initiatives in the State. Queensland’s inland fishing program, the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS), was introduced in 2000 and has since grown from 25 dams to 63 impoundments.

11:30 - 2:30pm Occasional Friday Dinner, dates advertised on our Facebook page

To celebrate, the “SIPS 25” fishing competition will be held in the September school holidays at SIPS destinations.

Fisheries Queensland is teaming up with the Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland and fish-stocking groups across the State for the competition with a swag of prizes on the line.

After a decade of Labor’s anti-fishing agenda, Queensland’s recreational fishers and fish stocking groups can now feel confident that the Government supports them and their growth.

*Conditions apply – one coupon per table. Labrador Store only.

It defies logic that Labor was planning to do away with fisheries science altogether. In the recent Budget, we salvaged $13 million for scientific capability and 38 public servants will keep their jobs.

Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett said the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme was a major part of Queensland’s $2.5 billion recreational fishing industry.

“The work of volunteer stocking groups should not be understated, it creates opportunities for tourists and locals alike to enjoy fishing and camping at these facilities,” Minister Perrett said.

“In the last year 3.2 million fingerlings including barramundi, Australian bass, golden perch, silver perch and Murray cod have been released.

ROOF RESTORATIONS

GREEN SEALING CONTINUES TO ROLL OUT ON RUSSELL ISLAND

All roofs age over time. After around 15 years, tile roofs deteriorate to the point where a restoration should be considered. At this age, colour starts to fade, ridge capping becomes brittle, lichen and mould can grow, and tiles become harder to clean. The appearance of your home suffers and your roof is more likely to develop leaks.

Andy Necklen fron A&E Neclen Roof Restorations has over 35 years experience in the painting trade. He uses only premium quality products for his restorations and offers a guarantee on all workmanship and materials.

Andy is an owner/operator and doesn’t employ salespeople or contractors so costs are kept to a minimum, which means savings for you! BEFORE FULL ROOF RESTORATIONS FROM ONLY $2,200

The next stage of Redland City Council’s Green Seal program for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) is now underway on Russell Island.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said Council was upgrading five roads on Russell Island with the installation of a gravel pavement and two-coat bitumen seal.

“The current work on Russell Island has been funded by Council, with $4 million allocated for the Green Seal program in the 2025-26 Budget,” she said.

“In total, the Budget included a $6.95 million investment in infrastructure for our islands.

“Council is committed to improving infrastructure on the islands and enhancing them as a place to live and visit.”

Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said when the latest Russell Island works were completed it would be a milestone for the SMBI Green Seal program.

“At that point, Council will have sealed about 74 per cent of the total SMBI roads scheduled for upgrade under the program,” he said.

“The green sealing reduces the ongoing maintenance of unsealed roads which degrade very quickly after bad weather and also generate a lot of dust.”

As part of 2025-26 Green Seal program, the following five Russell Island roads will be sealed by the end of June 2026:

Pharlap Street (full length)

Baguette Street (from Pharlap Street to No.32)

Tails Street (from Pharlap Street to No.32)

Todman Street (from Pharlap Street to No. 32)

Tulloch Street (from Pharlap Street to No.34)

Under the Green Seal program, work will occur on Macleay Island later in the 2025-26 financial year.

AWAY FOR THE DAY CAMPAIGN PAVES THE WAY FOR SCHOOL MOBILE PHONE BAN

A website and social media campaign has been launched today to help support families and students in the lead up to the 2024 school year when students will be required keep their mobile phones ‘away for the day’. The campaign highlights the important role parents and carers play in students’ safe and responsible use of mobile devices, both during and outside school hours.

The mobile phone ban will extend to wearable devices like smartwatches, which can be worn, but must have notifications switched off, so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours. SENIOR LIVING

SENIORS SET TO BENEFIT FROM NEW AGE-FRIENDLY INITIATIVES

A new Crisafulli Government initiative is helping communities become more agefriendly for older residents, by celebrating the contribution that seniors make across the State.

Seven local councils in south-east, north-west and central Queensland will receive a total of $300,000 in Community Development Grants, which will go towards ensuring Queensland seniors are connected with their communities.

Some of the Councils that have received funding include:

Brisbane City Council: $50,000 for the delivery of co-designed community projects incorporating five geographical based Seniors cafes to explore what age-friendly Brisbane looks like from the perspective of older residents and local organisations in Brisbane City.

Redland City Council: $45,000 for the delivery of a partnership project with Council libraries and local organisations to develop and trial a series of interactive pilot programs. The finalised program will be delivered in library branches across the City.

Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services Amanda Camm said the government was committed to building an age-friendly state.

“We want to see a state where seniors lead healthy and productive lives, are connected to their community and cared for when support is required,” Minister Camm said.

“It’s wonderful to see local governments designing activities that ensure the voices of older people shape the communities they live in.

“Age-friendly communities are not just great for older people – they’re great for everyone.

“From our first days in office, this government committed to ensuring our policies, programs and services are age-friendly and inclusive.

“I am delighted to know these local initiatives will contribute to that vision.”
