This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports. Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.
“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.
Redland City Council reminds property owners that they are responsible for ensuring their roof-water system is correctly installed and legally connected to the stormwater system.
It is important that this is done so that roof water run-off does not impact Council infrastructure or compromise community safety.
The sewerage network and the stormwater network are two separate systems and they have been designed so that one doesn’t end up in the other.
It is vital that property owners ensure stormwater does not enter the sewerage network via their properties as this could result in the network backing up and causing sewage to overflow.
This can affect your own home, as well as cause sewage overflows in neighbouring properties and public spaces.
It is also illegal under Queensland legislation.
Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.
Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.
Section 80 of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 says the owner of premises must not allow any part of a stormwater installation (roof gutters, downpipes, subsoil drains and stormwater drainage) for the premises to be connected to an on-site sewage facility or a sanitary drain.
He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).
Council has a city-wide program for conducting sanitary drain smoke-testing of properties.
The detection work involves non-toxic smoke being blown into sewer maintenance holes to check the city’s wastewater network for defects, damage or illegal connections.
Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum. “The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”
More testing is planned for the current financial year and Council’s contractor will advise affected residents in advance of the testing.

Portfolio Representative Councillor Julie Talty said some barking was acceptable, but excessive barking could become a neighbourhood nuisance.
Featured in the 2-hour performance include crazy clowns, aerial acrobatics, Globe of Death, camels, miniature donkeys, liberty ponies and much much more!
“By and far, most pet owners manage their animals very well. But if your dog is barking excessively, it’s important to find out why,” Cr Talty said. “Problem barking differs from one dog to the next. It could be because they are excited, stressed, bored, in pain, defending their territory, or perhaps lonely – and many dogs will bark when their owners are not at home.”

Redland City Council has teamed up with TRiQ Arena to bring the company’s sport and activity modules to Redlands Coast and trial them in local parks.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the equipment, which encourages spontaneous play and caters for all age groups, would be available to use for free throughout August at Thornlands Community Park, Raby Esplanade Park in Ormiston and Jingeri Park in Redland Bay.
“TRiQ Arena activity modules can be used to hone skills for soccer, basketball, netball, tennis and a range of other ball sports,” she said.
“You don’t need to be a pro athlete to use the equipment – each activity module has been designed to encourage play regardless of your age or skill level.
“This is a great opportunity to get your heart rate up, spend more time in your local park, and connect with other members of the community over a friendly game.
“The equipment has been trialled in other parts of Australia and Queensland previously, but this is a first for Redlands Coast.”
Sport and Recreation Portfolio representative Jason Colley said the equipment was aimed at promoting health and wellbeing in the community.
“Meeting daily exercise quotas can sometimes be difficult, particularly if you have a busy work or study schedule,” Cr Colley said.
“The TRiQ Arena modules make it easy for all members of our community to get active whenever it suits them.
“Budding young athletes will also benefit, as the modules have specialised elements that allow players to work on their technical skills.”

The Crisafulli Government is delivering for Queensland, having completed the newly upgraded Exhibition Station at the Brisbane Showgrounds, which will transport hundreds of thousands of visitors to this year’s Ekka.
The Ekka, run by the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA), has brought city and country together since 1876.
The Ekka attracts more than 400,000 visitors annually to showcase Queensland’s primary industries—including beef cattle judging and woodchopping—alongside handcrafted displays, cookery, family friendly entertainment, strawberry sundaes, showbags and sideshow alley.
More than 50,000 people are expected to visit the Queensland Government precinct, which allows visitors to meet with police and check out an all-terrain police vehicle, explore an operational ambulance, meet and greet Olympians and Paralympians, and learn about initiatives underway to deliver for Queensland.
The precinct will feature a range of innovative and interactive displays and artwork showcasing community initiatives, services, and advice on safety, health, lifestyle improvement, economic growth, and planning for Queensland’s future.
Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett, who hasn’t missed an Ekka for the last 40 years, said the Ekka was among the biggest and most important events on the Queensland calendar, bringing regional and city Queenslanders together.
“The Ekka is a highlight of the year for many Queenslanders, with almost half a million people visiting over the nine days to celebrate our proud agricultural traditions, cheer on competitors, sample classic show treats, enjoy the entertainment, or simply soak up the atmosphere,” Minister Perrett said.
“The Queensland Government precinct is a great opportunity for people to connect with our teams and see how we’re delivering to make Queensland safer, restore health services when you need them, deliver a better lifestyle through a stronger economy, and a plan for the future.”
