Her education in pharmacology has helped not only residents in the city but also friends and family. Her skills are an asset in a time when getting in to see a doctor can take months. Q. Where are you from? A. I’m from Estevan. Q. Why did you want to become a pharmacist? A. I was interested in the health-care field and I like the chemistry, so I guess that gave me a leaning towards it. Since then, just helping people with all their health issues and medications and making sure they are using them appropriately. Q. How long have you been a pharmacist? A. 36 years. Q. What is the best part

Q. What is the part of your job you are not so keen on? A. I guess it’s like any job, there’s paperwork and I guess sometimes it’s ok to have paper work but sometimes the paperwork interferes with the other things you have to do. The part I probably dislike the most is doing third party billings when there is a problem with them.

Our Past June 16, 1971

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter

This week I write about new beginnings and coming into your own, which some of us know to be tough. Moving away from home is tough enough, but when you add another province to the mix, it gets a whole lot tougher. Family and friends, that’s what I miss most. The convenience of having that listening ear at home when you’ve had one of those days and the friends I grew up with, nothing or no one can compare to those special enough to have graced my life with their presence. But as they, whoever they are, say, time heals all wounds and things do get better; it is these words that have gotten me through this move. As time passes me every day, I meet a new face or get more comfortable and aware of my surroundings. There are some who I have spoken to, who offer nothing but praise for what I’ve done, but it is nothing many of you haven’t already accomplished. What I mean to say through all of this is that I have broken through the barrier and now I can say I am truly happy here. Not that I wasn’t before, but the home sickness took hold of this young lady for a little bit. I think if you have the right people in the right setting it helps. I could not ask for better co-workers because they have shown me the true meaning of kindness this city has to offer. For those who I now have the privilege to call friends, I couldn’t ask for more generous and warm people. So Estevan, it looks like I’m going to stay awhile, enjoy the sun shine and kick back, lift my feet up and discover what else this city has to offer me. The moral to this story, this week is to look up when everything or everyone is looking down because when you least expect it, life improves all on it’s own, you just have to be open to the change.

The Trader takes readers back to 1971 when the Liberals were fighting for your vote. Recreational facilities were scarce then, and things like a golf course were hard to come by. Estevan has come a long way since those days. In celebration of the start of a beautiful summer season the Trader reminds readers of the abundance of activities available to them this day in age. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. If you have a photo you'd think the readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Rose Ditaranto at: rditaranto@estevanmercury.ca

The talk soon ended up on the price of land, and this farmer had a decidedly different view of land prices. In his mind, land is more than what he farms. It is an investment, and one he suggested is more stable than many of the options out there. In that respect, he is certainly correct. We have seen the recent economic recession knock stock markets down hard, and numerous retirement savings plans have taken a serious hit as a result. Relay for Life gives cancer survivors and their caregivers the opportunity to unite in the fight against this terrible disease. The relay is to act as a symbol for the various stages a person fighting cancer endures, from the cold, dark, painful nights to the sunny, bright, and happy days.

Relay for Life strengthens survivors through unity, reliability, and experience By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Cancer – an emotional journey for those diagnosed with the disease don’t have to face alone thanks to fundraisers like Estevan’s Relay for Life which took place for its fifth year last Saturday. The event was another tremendous success, raising $144,303.26 of its $185,000 goal, said event co-chair Tina Bird. “It was a phenomenal success. The weather cooperated, the support of the business community was fabulous yet again and the participants had a good time, as did everyone else,” she said. Last year’s relay raised $172,000 of its $175,000 goal. It’s events like these that bring the community together and even draw the attention of those outside the country said Bird. For the survivors, the relay offers them a sense of fellowship and support.

“It gives them the support and the encouragement to know there are people out there that are behind us, not only their family and friends, but we are out there to raise money for research and find a cure and to support them,” she said. Carol Cundall, the relay’s survivor co-chair, said the event is an emotional rollercoaster. “At times your emotions go all over the board. You’re kind of saddened and happy and you have really mixed emotions. When I see survivors who were there and the years of their survival, I am thrilled, I’m excited,” said Cundall. Five years ago, Cundall was diagnosed with breast cancer which soon spread to her lungs and bones. She has been in remission since September 2006. “I was shocked, I really in my mind thought I had cancer, but I thought it would just be maybe a small little lump of cancer, I really didn’t know what

Midale

to expect,” said Cundall of her experience with the disease. “Some people with 20 years of survival … and these people are an inspiration, they give me hope to continue on,” she added. For both Cundall and Bird, cancer was nothing foreign, in fact it hit close to home for both. “My sister passed away in 1992, she wasn’t quite 21-years-old, and at that point in time I was very mad and frustrated. In 2001 I started volunteering here and there with the relay and thought it was a positive way to deal with the feelings I had and sort of fight back against cancer,” said Bird. As for Cundall, she lost both her mother and grandmother to cancer. Her aunt is a breast cancer survivor whose cancer has re-occurred; her sister currently has breast cancer and her father is battling prostate cancer. “You have to be proac-

Teen pleads guilty to death of innocent 21-year-old man PROVINCIAL Twenty-one-year-old Darcy Sanderson wasn’t aware of fate’s plan the night he met and consoled a recently heart-broken 16year-old male. Sanderson was stabbed in the heart, about a year ago, at a Regina home that same night by the same teenage boy he had tried to help. On Monday, the now 17-year-old boy who cannot be identified, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to three years, which is the maximum allowable under the Youth Criminal Justice Act for the offence. The unidentified teen also pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and breaching a deferred custody order. These sentences will be served as part of the manslaughter term. *** A mandatory, modest and gradual expansion of the Canada Pension Plan has been decided by both fed-

eral and provincial finance ministers to be the best way to increase the retirement incomes of Canadians. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Monday “that a majority of the provincial ministers have endorsed the idea of increasing CPP contributions from employers and employees to boost the value of the benefits when they retire.” Flaherty did admit not all support for the direction was unanimous, but said he remains optimistic that there will be enough provincial backing to make this happen. In order for changes to the CPP to occur, the support of two-thirds of the provinces and two-thirds of the population is needed. Saskatchewan Finance Minister Rod Ganteofoer said he did not commit on behalf of the province to the change.

NATIONAL Garnet Angeconeb took a trip down memory lane, a trip he had tried to forget; childhood trauma he left

behindyears ago. In 1979 Angeconeb suffered sexual abuse from the hands of a trusted public figure; a priest, nonetheless. The abuse took place at a residential school in a tiny northwestern Ontario town. Angeconeb walked down the abandoned hallways and past the dorm rooms, living area, play room, dining hall and chapel where he found a chair he liked and snuck it out the back door; an act necessary for him to heal. *** A mudslide in B.C. last Sunday left property owners at a loss for words as they watched their homes and vehicles being swallowed whole by the earth. However, currently the heavy rain in the region is holding up clean-up efforts. ***

In 2008 the number of anti-gay hate crimes, in particular violence against homosexual males, dramatically increased, according to Statistics Canada. The number of hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation more than doubled in 2008 compared to the year before. The study found that not only has the crimes doubled, but are more likely to involve violence; three-quarters of all the hate crimes that year against homosexuals, involved violence.

INTERNATIONAL Gary Brooks Faulkner, a 52-year-old California builder, has been arrested in northern Pakistan where he was on a one-man mission to find and kill Osama Bin Laden. Faulkner, who friends

and family refer to as “Rambo”, was apprehended wearing night-vision goggles, carrying a pistol, dagger and 40-inch sword that security forces believe he wished to use to behead the al Qaida leader in revenge for the September 11 terrorist attacks. Faulkner is a devout Christian and was carrying a book of religious verses and teachings. *** Five hundred African penguins were killed early this week by the cold winter weather in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region. National Parks spokeswoman, Megan Taplin said chicks aged a few weeks and about two months were only covered by down feathers succumbed to the wet, cold weather. The penguin population has been dwindling with only 700 breeding pairs left in the area.

Bladder Infections Not Always Painful DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write something about bladder infections. Can you have a bladder infection with no symptoms? -- A. ANSWER: The signs and symptoms of bladder infections are the same for men and women. The irritated, infected bladder demands frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom so it can be emptied. People have a burning sensation when passing urine. Pain is felt in the bladder area. Sometimes

blood appears in the urine. Men have far fewer bladder infections than women. Women have a shorter urethra than men. The urethra is the tube that empties the bladder of urine. Women’s urethras open in an area that has a large bacterial population. Bacteria can ascend the female urethra without trouble. It’s harder for them to climb the male urethra. And men’s prostate glands secrete substances that have antibacterial properties. The presence of bacteria in the urine without any signs of bladder infection is called asymptomatic bacteriuria. Doctors treat pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria to prevent symptoms from arising, as they often do during pregnancy. Infected urine, even without symptoms, can lower the birth weight of babies who were in the uterus during that period.

OPEN HOUSE RE

D

E UC

Otherwise, asymptomatic bacteriuria in women or men, at any age, usually does not require treatment. In women, bacteria in the bladder are often transiently there. They disappear many times on their own. Treatment can lead to the development of resistant bacteria and can produce side effects. Furthermore, it is costly. The guidance from most experts, therefore, is not to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria. Exceptions exist. Diabetics might benefit from treatment. The topic of urinary tract infections and their treatment are covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue - No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. The family that sings together stays together

By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury The traditional, and immensely talented, band known as The Link Family, were a perfect match for last Sunday’s sunshine as they performed at the Church of God. It was a parking lot packed full of eager fans who listened intently as the family sang their way into their hearts. The Link family is from Lebanon, Missouri, which is southwest Missouri, and has been performing as a band for 10 years. Mom, Becky, sings lead and harmony and plays the rhythm guitar and bass, she has home schooled her five children for more than 14 years,

10063GG00

began teaching piano at 16 and has taught music to hundreds of children and adults over the years. Becky plays alongside her sons Benjamin, 15; John, 10; Aaron, 12; Kyle and his wife Ashley; daughter Rachel and her husband Landen; and husband Lance. The family is on the road for 50,000 miles and 250 plus concerts a year and only visits home for two months. Lance said they do not let the stress of being away from home haunt them and they cope well. “Life has its stresses for everybody, no matter what your occupation is; this is what we do. It’s a state of mind, sure it’s got its challenges and its

blessings, I guess it’s an intense cooking pot of learning how to get along with family.” Lance said his wife’s passion for music has been prevalent since the get-go. “I met my wife in college, she was in a band and they needed a soundman, so I became her band’s soundman and we’ve been involved in music since we met 30 years ago. The kids came along and they’re just like their mom, and probably about 10 years ago, the kids started playing instruments and we started doing little, local gigs and now we live on a bus and travel everywhere,” he said. The family has been to the Appalachian Moun-

tains, four of the five Great Lakes, the Grand Canyon and the deserts. “Every region has it’s very special place in our heart, you learn after a while to make every place fun, whether it’s as boring as the flat lands of Saskatchewan, we have a

ball,” said Lance. The band plays mostly the bluegrass genre of music, but does a lot of gospel as well. To date the family has released 14 albums; their newest, The Water is Wide, came out about three weeks ago, and fu-

ture plans and new albums are already in the making. “As long as the kids want to and the Lord’s in this, we’re just going to go. “This is the best thing we’ve ever done. We are going to go until there’s some reason not to,” said Lance.

Good eating today Written By The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan with the Support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Whether you are buying a home or setting up a business, location matters. But does location matter to our health? Yes, research has shown that people who live in disadvantaged communities have poorer health. One way location can impact your health is by influencing where you buy your food. It can also affect the quality of food you can buy. The availability and quality of food are all parts of food security. Food security means that all people at all times have enough money for safe, nutritious and acceptable food. Being food secure also means having enough food for an active and healthy life. However, there are households, communities and even countries that are not food secure. Not having healthy food easily available in a

community is a concern. Without access to grocery stores, communities may become “food deserts.” A food desert is an area where food is not easily available, too expensive or unhealthy. Food deserts usually exist in disadvantaged neighbourhoods or rural communities. This means the people with the fewest resources have to

travel the farthest to buy healthy food. Researchers in the United States, Canada and even Saskatchewan have examined food deserts. In 2009, the first national study of food deserts in the U.S. found that 23.5 million people live in food desert areas. Research in the city of Saskatoon found that food deserts exist more locally as well. Lack of access to food impacts all types of communities. It comes back to location. Think about the location of grocery stores in your city or town. Can

everyone in the community easily access healthy foods? If not, it’s time to raise awareness about the crisis of food availability and quality in your community. Consider the questions: * Should grocery stores be an essential service like schools and fire stations? * Are there tax funds available for grocery stores to set up in disadvantaged communities? Everyone needs to work together to address food security. Learn more about local bylaws or policies in your community. Speak to local government leaders and business owners about the situation. Connect with others who are interested in food security and food deserts by visiting the websites www.foodsecuresaskatchewan.ca or www. fooddesertmonth.org. You can make a difference in your community by addressing the problem of food deserts. 1/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese Mix all marinade ingredients in a bowl. Reserve about one-third cup of the marinade and pour the rest into a resealable plastic bag. Add the steak to the bag and allow to marinate for an hour or more in the refrigerator. Spray the grill with nonstick cooking spray. Heat the grill to medium heat. Remove the steak from the bag and place on the grill. Allow to cook 17 to 20 minutes for medium-rare doneness, or until desired doneness. Brush the steak while cooking with the reserved marinade -- don’t use the marinade that was in the bag with the meat. Remove the steak and let it rest for 10 minutes. Slice the bread lengthwise and butter each half. Sprinkle on the shredded cheese. Put bread on the grill to toast slightly and melt the cheese. Slice the meat and place on the bread. Cut into servingsize portions and enjoy with your favorite side dish.

What every Dad needs! Single Dad Inspired Father’s Day

PLEASE RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER!!

One of the more noteworthy societal shifts in the second half of the 20th century was the growing number of single-parent families. Whereas singleparent homes were an anomaly during the first half of the 1900s, by the turn of the century the percentage of single-parent homes had grown substantially. One of the common misconceptions about single-parent homes is that they all are headed by women. According to a 2009 report from the U.S. Census Bureau titled Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007, an overwhelming majority of the 13.7 million single parents across the country are women. However, 16 percent of single parents are fathers, a figure that equates to roughly 2.2 million men serving as custodial parents across the country. For those households, Father’s Day is a day that bears extraordinary significance. Initially proposed in 1909 by Mrs. John B. Dodd, Father’s Day was actually rooted in Dodd’s

own single-parent home. Dodd’s father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran widowed when his wife died in childbirth in Washington state. Left to raise his six children on his own, Smart’s perseverance and selflessness eventually became the root of what is now Father’s Day. Though it’s common

to assume Father’s Day is a North American tradition, days honoring fathers are actually held all across the globe. In the United States, Father’s Day has been celebrated on the third Sunday in June every since 1966. However, global celebrations take place throughout the year. * March 19: Bolivia, Hon-

duras, Spain, Italy, Portugal * May 5: Portugal * May 8: South Korea * First Sunday in June: Lithuania * June 5: Denmark

* Second Sunday in June: Austria, Belgium * June 17: El Salvador * Third Sunday in June: Argentina, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Colombia, Ethiopia, France,

Greece, Ireland, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Africa, United Kingdom, Venezuela * June 21: Guatemala * Last Sunday in June: Haiti

tries and 250 to 300 people who just came through, said Ton. The turnout was just excellent, he added. “Everybody had a good time and it didn’t rain, so that’s always a good thing, said Tony. A hobby isn’t just a hobby Tony said, it’s something you feel strongly enough to keep you occupied. “It’s something to keep a person’s hands and mind busy; it’s a passion and a love for vehicles, he said. The oldest car this year was a 1925 Model T owned by John Dick of Estevan. However, this year the attraction that caught most people’s eye was Tim’s transformer truck, a 1936 rusty, burned up old Ford. Tim’s four-year-old son is a transformer freak and has always bugged his dad to make him his very own transformer, just like in the movies. “The basic structure is

A dream come true for a father and son whose hobby has become an anticipated weekend attraction for locals and tourists. “I think it brings in people and friends from out of town. It’s just a meet and greet and show what you have and enjoy the day, said Tim Gervais. Tony, father, and Tim Gervais, son, decided eight years ago that they were going to share their favourite pastime with those who share in the passion of old cars. “It’s just been our hobby, we just extended it to everybody who has a car, said Tony. There is no obligation, just a time to come and share in the simple joy of appreciation for the classics, they both said. The T & T Rods car show this year had 52 en-

finished but I want to add more details, said Tim. Overall the car show last Saturday gave residents and even visitors from places such as Texas, Minot, and Manitoba something to ooh and aah about.

University of Waterloo football season suspended after dopers are discovered PROVINCIAL The sea of green will be tamed at one of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ home games this season. The Roughriders will sport retro jerseys in honour of the team’s 100-year anniversary at their July 17 game against the Edmonton Eskimos at Mosaic Stadium. On this day the team will trade in their popular green jerseys for replicas

of those worn from 1912 through 1947. The black, red and silver gear, complete with the retro red helmets, was unveiled on Tuesday by fullback Chris Szarka, quarterback Darian Durant and Peter Nazarchuk. *** The Riders said g o o d b y e o n Tu e s d a y to fourth quarterback, Kent Smith. The team is prepared to run with

three quarterbacks for the time being. Doug Berry, the Riders’ offensive coordinator ,said for now three is better than four because Darian Durant, Ryan Dinwiddie and Cole Bergquist will get more r e p e t i t i o n s . H o w e v e r, Berry said he would like to have a fourth quarterback on the roster at some point to act as a developmental player.

on the Warriors football team. The university suspended the football program for the 2010 season after finding nine infractions. Dick White, director of athletics at the University of Regina, said this is a wake-up call for student-athletes and hopes the news sets off alarm bells across the nation. ***

Rural Lignite ND Q: I was watching “Friday Night Lights” a few weeks ago, and could have sworn that one of the co-stars was Detective Larry Zito from “Miami Vice” back in the ‘80s. Was it him? What has he been up to since leaving “Miami Vice”? -- Tommy D., via e-mail A: John Diehl, 60, has been working VERY steadily since leaving the trendsetting police drama back in 1987. Most recently he portrayed Richard Sherman on “FNL.” He also has starred/gueststarred on: “L.A. Law,” “The John Larroquette Show,” “Nash Bridges,” “JAG,” “The West Wing,” “Cold Case” and “Point Pleasant.” He also just wrapped two feature films, “Road to Nowhere” and “Natural Selection.” *** Q: I know Alicia Witt of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” also was in the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus.” Was she also the little girl in “Dune”? -- Cate S., via email A: This beautiful film and TV star did indeed get her break in showbiz in the 1984 David Lynch sci-fi fantasy, “Dune,” with Kyle MacLachlan and Sting. The 34-year-old actress also has appeared in “Vanilla Sky,” “The Upside of Anger,” “88 Minutes” and “Friday Night Lights,” to name a few. *** Q: I have been a lifelong fan of the Osmonds. I know that two of the brothers, Virl and Tom, are deaf. My mom told me Merrill’s son is deaf as well. Can you tell me about him? -- Paula F., Harrisburg, Pa.

A: Justin Osmond, Merrill’s son, was born with severe hearing loss, but can now hear with the help of hearing aids. Justin is the public-relations coordinator/spokesman for the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which has provided more than 440,000 hearing aids to underprivileged children in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Justin told me about an instance of providing the gift of hearing to a young child that has stuck with him: “I remember one little girl in particular who changed my life forever. She was just absolutely filled with joy when she realized she could hear. Her mother told me with all the sincerity in her heart: ‘I love my daughter so much. And now she can hear me tell her that I love her.’ And then she said something that I’ll never forget: ‘Justin, I hope you never measure your life by the days you have lived but by the smiles you have left behind.’” For information on how you can help, go to starkeyhearingfoundation.org. *** Q: I watched a movie on SyFy a while back called “Brave New World” with Leonard Nimoy. I can’t find it anywhere and would love to see it again. -- Robyn D. in Florida A: I found a few out-ofprint VHS copies of the 1998 remake of the classic book by Adolph Huxley on amazon. com, as well as a PAL DVD version on eBay. There are a few out there, but you’ll have to pay a pretty penny to get your hands on one. Good luck!

Infrastructure Canada program to move forward with much needed improvements. Renovations for the club will occur in two phases. Phase one will be the replacement of the existing washrooms with a barrier free design and the installation of a wheelchair lift to the viewing area. Phase two will be the installation of insulation and vapour barriers as well as an upgrade to the viewing area’s plumbing and electrical systems in an effort to make the facility more energy efficient.

There are things to do in Estevan after all this summer season By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Summer is quickly approaching and Estevan has felt the heat this past week, so instead of creating an excuse to sit inside and twiddle your thumbs the entire season, I give you a few tips on how to stay actively engaged. For the kids, especially, this summer’s proving to be quite hectic, leaving those couch potatoes with no reason not to get involved. Alicia Gooding, play park supervisor, said the parks are where the excitement is during summer season, with events like the carnival, a parade and a variety of camps to suit each child’s needs. “The play parks start June 29 and Canada Day will be one of our big events, the Kinsmen Kinettes and ourselves do a big carnival every year and then we have the parade, which we will be on. “We have our pancake breakfast on the 23rd of July, another carnival in August and I’m looking into doing a movie night at Hillcrest play park,” said Gooding.

As far as camps go, cheerleading, diving and golf are returning as well as two new camps, BMX and skateboarding. The camps are for kids aged nine to 14, and the play parks welcome all children up to and including age 11. The aforementioned events are held every year, said Gooding, however, each year the committee brainstorms new and exciting events and ideas for the season’s to do list. “I feel there is a lot to do during the summer for the kids. The sports camps are a great idea but I try to get more of the high school ages, but it’s hard to get them because of work and everything. “You need the interest to keep it going but you don’t always get it because of other things they have going on,” she said. Although the play parks are generally very busy, Gooding said newcomers are encouraged. “Play parks are usually quite busy through the summer; I mean it is always nice to see more kids come and see them get outside.” As for parents, there

is plenty they can do to join in with their children. “We try and get parents involved with the play parks. Every play park has their own little party at the end of the year and we try and get a lot of the parents around the area to help. “We try and get families involved as much as we can. It’s been successful. I mean it’s always the same families that help out, but we get lots of help,” said Gooding Don’t worry grownups, the fun doesn’t stop for you there. Besides the traditional sites and attractions Estevan offers year round, I ask you think outside the box this year. The Souris Valley Theatre offers real adult fun with real adult taste through a variety of comedic show stoppers this summer. “We have two musicals going on, the first one is called Corner Gassed which is based on Corner Gas. The second show is called Rhyme Rustler, the Ballad of Robert Service, it’s a little bit more serious, but it’s about Robert

Service the great Canadian poet and his adventures in the Yukon,” said Ron Ror, Souris Valley Theatre director. Ror said the theatre is the only one of its kind throughout the entire province and if you hadn’t already had the chance to check out what it has offer, you should definitely stop by. “It’s unique, there’s nothing like anywhere else in Saskatchewan. We are the only theatre in Saskatchewan that does musicals in the summer and we have the longest run. It’s a measure of our success that we can run for six weeks. “Just come once and see what they’re missing. I guarantee them is they come once, they will be coming back, we don’t send our audiences away disappointed, so we put on really entertaining shows,” he said. For only $21 at the most, residents and tourists can enjoy a night of laughter and an outing on the town said Ror, with so much going on in the city and with the theatre, there shouldn’t be any time to relax.

“There’s a lot going on, I mean there’s hardly enough time for you to sit under your tree and sip lemonade,” said Ror. Tickets for both shows are available for purchase right now at Henders Drugs. The theatre also offers tickets for opening night dinner and a musical theatre camp that runs from July 12 to the 17 for kids aged eight to 15.

The best way to choose a peach, whether white or yellow, is by the feel and smell of the fruit, not the color. Look for peaches that are somewhat firm yet yield lightly to pressure when applied. California supplies the product from May to October, peaking in July. Washington peaches are available from July to September, while Chile supplies it the rest of the year. Here are some fun facts about peaches: • These “Persian apples” actually had their beginning in China, but were developed in Persia and went from there to Europe and then to America with the colonists.

• The nectarine and the peach are so similar that there is only one gene that separates the two to make them distinct. The nectarine has one recessive gene -- the one with the fuzz. • “You’re a real peach” originated from the tradition of giving a peach to your beloved friends. • Most peaches are cultivated by grafting different combinations of rootstocks onto scions. The recipe for Peaches and Cream Pops is a cool way to enjoy this fantastic fruit on a hot summer day. PEACHES AND CREAM POPS 1/2 cup peeled, chopped fresh peaches 1/3 cup peeled, pureed fresh peaches 2/3 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt 2 tablespoons honey

Spoon the peach mixture into 4 ice creampop molds and insert the handle. Freeze for at least 4 hours. • On June 29, 1613, the Globe Theater, where most of Shakespeare’s plays debuted, burns down. The Globe was built in 1599 from the timbers of London’s very first permanent theater, Burbage’s Theater, built in 1576. • On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and its king. The declaration came 442 days after the first volleys of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. The American War for Independence would last for five more years. • On June 28, 1928, 26year-old Louis Armstrong walked into a Chicago recording studio and recorded “West End Blues.” Armstrong’s 15-second trumpet intro to “West End Blues” and his eight-bar solo near the end make it one of the most influential pieces of recorded music in history. • On July 3, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Rivers and Harbors Flood Control Bill, which allocates funds to improve flood-control and water-storage systems across the country. The bill

The initial production run of 30,000 units looked to be too ambitious after one month of lackluster sales (only 3,000 were sold in the first

month), but after a massive advertising campaign, available stocks sold out before the end of August. • On July 2, 1992, the one-millionth Corvette, a white LT1 roadster with a red interior and a black roof -- the same colors as the original 1953 model -- rolls off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Ky. One Dog Gets the Bed, the Other the Floor By Jill Jackson H O L LY W O O D . . . Take a long look at Julia Roberts the next time you see her. She’s been making the rounds of the talk shows looking “younger than springtime.” Mayhap a facial tuck or two? Julia talks a great deal about her kids and family and husband. It’s always nice to know about happily married Hollywood twosomes. Want a good showbiz read? Try “Life Unsealed” by Belinda Carlisle (Crown Books). The lead singer of the Go-Gos reveals her struggle with substance abuse and other ups and downs. It’s being called a “Cinderella story.” So settle in and have a go at a very heartfelt and winning read. To get back to “face tucks,” take a good long look at Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. The former round face is now sculpted and most attractive. Maybe also a tuck or two? She also is on the talk-show circuit, and doing very well, I might add. Another big award for Sandra Bullock. She is the first femme ever to receive the MTV Generation Award. It’s a good thing she purchased that huge house in the New Orleans Garden District. She will need it to house all the statuettes, plaques and etc. she’s taking home. Come October, Oprah will receive the Minerva Award given to women “on the front lines of humanity.” The event will be held at the Warner’s Conference in Long Beach, Calif. Meanwhile, Miss Winfrey keeps rolling along, sporting umpteen different hairdos - straight, curly, frizzy, long and short -- and umpteen interesting shows. It’s said she is one of the most powerful women in the country. And you’d better believe it! How about this for a lineup of celebs? Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Candice Bergen, Dustin Hoffman and Shirley MacLaine all joining in for the AFI Achievement Award. It’s always fun to watch these award shows on TV. But it’s even more fun to watch backstage, if you are lucky enough to be backstage. Luckily I have been (as an accredited journalist). The Golden Girls have left us. Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and just recently Rue McClanahan, with only Betty White left. Let us hope she’s around for quite awhile

to keep shedding that great “White” light. Aside to Bella D. of Denver: You ask when is the best time to come visit Hollywood. Honey, there “ain’t no best time.” Everything is relative. There are crowds sightseeing on Hollywood and Sunset boulevards, at the studios and on bus tours. If you are lucky, one might pop up somewhere. But the best thing to do (as I have said before) is to take a paid tour, and you are likely to see someone. If not that, then certainly the house in which

they live. *** BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Those pug dogs of Joan Blondell were named Bridey (after Bridey Murphy) and “Fresh-As-A-Tulip” (called Freshey). ... And Hermione Baddeley’s Bull was George. Many was the time when she had to leave him in Britain while she filmed in Hollywood. And believe it or not, she called him every day long distance. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW ’ S CORNER: I should buy stock in the aluminum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix, Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and living-room furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stop her from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog, Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occupies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kennel trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the door fastened. Bubba is getting near the end, and I don’t want to take on another dog until I solve this problem with Shera. Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleeping with me to correct this territorial issue? -- Susan W., via email DEAR SUSAN: I don’t think this is a territorial issue so much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far to push her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get up on the couch or the bed just like Bubba. But you don’t have to wait until Bubba is gone to start addressing Shera’s behavior. You can choose to

wait -- especially if taking care of Bubba is stressful right now and you just don’t want to deal with a new challenge. Shera’s behavior probably will not change during this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It’s a matter of you being the leader of the family, and what you say goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bed and Shera doesn’t, too tough for Shera. As far as how: I’d recommend spending more time with Shera, playing or doing basic obedience

training on the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on. When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command “sit” or “lie down” and “stay.” Basically, retrain her way of thinking about the purpose of those rooms. Is It Time to Make Home Improvements? By Samantha Mazzotta Q: I’ve been holding off on redoing the bathrooms in my house because of worries about the economy and whether my wife and I would be laid off. Now we’re in a disagreement: She wants to redo the bathrooms, but I still don’t want to risk spending money. What do you think? Is it worth it? -- Worried in Washington state A: Well, the homeimprovement industry is anxious to have you believe that it’s time to take the plunge and spend money on home renovations. DiggersList says that industry estimates point to homeowners in the U.S. spending twice as much money this year -- $270 billion -- on remodeling projects as they did in 2009. That’s all well and good, but the story is different for each homeowner. If you’re not sure about your company’s situation and

whether you’ll continue to be gainfully employed in the near future, yeah, you may want to hold off. At the same time, some renovations just need to get done. If there is a functional problem with the bathrooms -- the plumbing needs work, the bathtub or toilet is leaking -- then spend some money. If it’s more cosmetic, talk it over with the wife, and sit down together to figure out how much money you are both comfortable spending on the renovation. You could compromise by redoing just one bathroom this year, and the other bathroom next year. Or you could both promise not to splurge on unnecessary items like goldplated fixtures. But creating a renovation budget and working together to come in at or under the limit will help break the impasse. HOME TIP: The cost of a bathroom renovation varies widely depending on several factors, but can be
