ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Whether a waiting period is taking longer than expected, or just seems that way, the anxious Lamb would do well to create a center of calm within her- or himself, and not do anything rash. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Practical matters dominate the week, but cultural activities also are favored, especially those that can be shared with someone special in the Bovine’s life. Some important news might be forthcoming. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You need to know more about a possible career move in order to see if it offers a real opportunity or just a change. You’re sure to get lots of advice -- some of it good -- but the decision must be yours. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The arrival of hoped-for good news about a loved one dominates most of the week and provides a great excuse for the partyloving Moon Child to plan a special event to celebrate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas rushing to fi nalize their plans might want to think about slowing down the pace, or risk overlooking an important consideration that could become a sore point down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week’s challenges call for logical approaches. But sentiment also has its place. Sharing memories with a special someone, for example, strengthens the bond between you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A brandnew approach to a prob-

in full effect. Haulers are being permitted to haul reduced loads to meet a 350lb/in of Tire Width Ban. Road haul agreements are in place for each hauler to protect the roads and compensate the RM for the hauling operations. • Work continues on the waste water main ex-

pansion project for the West Industrial Park. • Council approved a six-month lease on the St. Peter’s Church House, which will be rented and used as a recruitment incentive for new physicians seeking to re-locate in Estevan. Funds for this project will come from the

Joint Health Fund held with the City of Estevan. • One new Oil Well Site was approved in the municipality. • The Water Connection Rate Bylaw was introduced for consideration of council. • The Reeve and Administrator attended a

lem could have a good chance of succeeding if it’s based on a solid foundation of fact to strengthen its potential for standing up to scrutiny. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A favorable report should give your optimism an important boost as you confront another phase of a challenge. Don’t be timid about accepting advice from someone you trust. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might want to target another goal if your

current aim is continually being deflected. But stay with it until you find that first sign of an opening, and then follow through. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although offers of advice might not always please the usually sure-footed Goat, good counsel is always worth considering, especially from those whose experience can be invaluable. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t rush to make up for lost time. Your productivity can be measured not only by what you do, but how

you do it. Move carefully until the job is done the way you like it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Emerging facts about someone you know might cause you to rethink your relationship. But remember to make judgments in context of a full situation, not just on scraps of data. Split Outdoor Pipe Disables Spigot Q: I’m not sure how, but when checking the outdoor spigots this spring I noticed that the steel pipe behind one of them had swelled and split. I had turned off water to this pipe last fall so I’m not sure how this happened, and I don’t see any water damage in the basement. Why did this occur? What’s the cheapest fix so I can use this spigot again soon? -- Frank T., Dover, N.H. A: I’m not sure exactly why it happened either. Perhaps if the tap wasn’t fully drained after you turned off water at the nearest shutoff valve, perhaps some water pooled just behind the spigot and, when a hard freeze occurred, the water froze, expanded and split the pipe. I’m also not sure there’s a truly cheap fix for this. Duct tape will keep water from spraying all over the place but won’t stop a leak and will quickly break down. You need to keep the water turned off and the pipe drained, and

contact a plumber as soon as possible. The pipe will need to be replaced, perhaps all the way back to the shutoff valve. Get a written estimate -- two or more if you’re not sure how much the job should cost -- and decide from there when and how you’ll have the pipe replaced. Because it sounds like you’ve got galvanized steel pipe, the plumber will recommend a different material (galvanized steel isn’t used anymore -- period) and he or she may recommend replacing

all the steel pipes, though probably not all at once. Meantime, it would be a good idea to check all of the other pipes leading outside for similar damage. Hopefully, that’s the only one you have to deal with right now. Also, since the Northeast is still at risk in April of more hard freezes occurring, keep the outside spigots turned off and drained for a few more weeks. Homes with newer plumbing don’t have to worry as much about outside pipes freezing and splitting in early spring, but older pipe systems need to be more closely watched.

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

Politicians need to get real in order to inspire voters With the political campaigns underway, it’s no wonder Canadians are apathetic at the polls. Before I get into this, I encourage you to do just a little research into each party platform, inform yourself about the local candidates and take a few minutes out of your day on May 2 to cast a ballot in the federal election. That is my PSA. Now I get it. I know why so many people can’t find someone to vote for. The campaigning has hardly been inspiring thus far. I have absolutely no political background, but I could draw out each party’s platform at least as well as the geniuses running these campaigns. Each party is running on the predictable. The Conservatives are concerned about a coalition government that holds majority support in the Commons, and are convinced only their plan of tax cuts equals economic prosperity. The Liberals, as the official Opposition, point out the woes of the past couple of years governing under the Conservatives. The NDP tell the non-committed voters they are the alternative left-of-centre party to the Grits, in hopes of one day becoming the official Opposition. The Bloc Quebecois only ever mention Quebec and the Conservatives. And the Green Party has been silenced by the CRTC, so they

Wait and see on biodiesel

don’t say much of anything anymore. Again, please look into what these parties are saying in their own words. Don’t simply accept my paraphrasing. These parties need to do a lot more to engage voters. Now the party to benefit most by poor voter turnout is the Conservatives, who also have the most money to spend on the campaign, but the Liberals, NDP and Greens need to do more to encourage people to vote. If they expect anything to go their way on election day, they need to break away from party lines and get a lot less political. Politicians don’t give us much credit, but I like to think we pick up on, and see through, political manoeuvring and meaningless campaign talk. If the leaders of these parties want to gather any support behind them, they need to get a little more real. Ignatieff just feels like another politician. He talks like a politician. The political leaders need to at the very least, appear honest. They need to tell it like it is. A politician that says once they are elected they will fix all the country’s problems is lying. I think we all know that. Just once I would like to see a politician break down the campaigning and just say this is state of things; this is what will help and not everybody is going to like it. I understand that is bordering on impossible, because suggesting there could be flaws in the system is a sure sign of weakness, but at least it would be true. No system is without flaws. If the parties looking to gain ground are really expecting to make any advances, they need to show Canadians that they aren’t going to be jerked around. In this campaign, it would be nice to see some legitimate honesty.

canola makes sense is one that is not easily answered. In general terms, canola is still a premium food oil in the world market, which likely lessens interest in turning it into a fuel. B.C. to add stricter animal cruelty laws PROVINCIAL REGINA - A Regina mom whose newborn died in bed with her says the death could have been prevented if the hospital had a general nursery and more nurses to watch babies. A m a n d a B r a s s ’s daughter Cambria went into respiratory distress five hours after she was born and was declared brain dead March 20. Brass says the baby was in bed with her because she had tried to feed her earlier and they fell asleep. The coroner is investigating how the baby died, including the possibility that she was accidentally smothered or had a breathing problem. Brass says she believes Cambria might still be alive had she been under the watchful eye of a nurse in a nursery. The Regina General Hospital tries to keep babies in bassinets in their mothers’ rooms to encourage bonding. NATIONAL VANCOUVER - A B.C. government task force into the sled dog industry has made 10 recommendations to toughen up animal cruelty laws following the slaughter of sled dogs. The report and a criminal investigation were ordered after it came to light this year that the operator of Whistler-area’s Howling Dog Tours put down between 70 and 100 dogs last April, when bookings apparently collapsed following the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Premier Christy Clark says her government will adopt all the recommendations, including increased fines to up to $75,000 and 24 months in jail for the worst cases. *** VANCOUVER - Canadians in relationships with multiple partners shouldn’t be turned into criminals because of alleged abuses in a small, isolated community in British Columbia, says a lawyer arguing against the anti-polygamy law. George Macintosh, a lawyer appointed to oppose the government at constitutional hearings, said Monday that the current law against polygamy is far too broad. He said it targets not just polygamous men who abuse women and children, but

also people in multipartner relationships that aren’t harming anyone. Much of the evidence in the case has focused on the small, religious sect of Bountiful, B.C., where residents follow the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or FLDS. INTERNATIONAL HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The U.S. Supreme Court blocked the first scheduled execution of a Texas death row inmate using a new drug cocktail on Tuesday, although the proposed lethal mix was not mentioned in the court’s decision to reconsider the merits of the condemned man’s appeal. Cleve Foster was to have been executed hours later for the 2002 slaying of a Sudanese woman in Fort Worth — the first

Texas execution since the state switched to pentobarbital in its three-drug mixture. The sedative has already been used for executions in Oklahoma and Ohio. On Tuesday morning, the top U.S. court agreed to reconsider its January order denying Foster’s appeal that raised claims of innocence and poor legal help during his trial and early stages of his appeals. *** PARIS - France’s foreign minister says United Nations and French negotiators are requiring Ivory Coast’s Laurent Gbagbo to agree in writing that he is leaving power. Alain Juppe said Tuesday that fighting in Ivory Coast had stopped and negotiations are now under way on Gbagbo’s departure. Juppe told French

legislators he had spoken to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and they agree that “the departure of Gbagbo be preceded by the publication of a document with his signature in which he renounces power.”

Rice lineman top CFL draft-day prospect PROVINCIAL REGINA - Scotland’s Tom Brewster moved atop the world men’s curling standings with a 5-3 win over China on Tuesday. The win improved Brewster’s record to 6-0 following the ninth draw. In other action, Switzerland beat Norway 7-4, Sweden edged Germany 8-7 in an extra end and the U.S. dispatched the Czech Republic 8-4 in seven ends. Canada puts its perfect 5-0 record on the line later Tuesday against France (4-1) before squaring off against Brewster in the evening draw. NATIONAL TORONTO - Rice offensive lineman Scott Mitchell will enter this year’s CFL Canadian college draft as the top-ranked prospect. The six-foot-four, 295-pound tackle moved up a spot to the No. 1 position in the CFL’s Scouting Bureau’s list following a solid performance at the league’s evaluation camp in March. Mitchell, an Ottawa native, went in as the second-ranked prospect but impressed with his versatility, lining up at guard and centre as well as at his natural position. The 2011 CFL Canadian college draft will be held May 8. *** Bob Watson makes his last regular-season

goaltending start for the Toronto Rock on Friday night and it will be one of the most important games of his fabulous National Lacrosse League career. The first-place Rock must defeat the secondplace Buffalo Bandits to clinch first place in the East Division and remain in contention for first overall and the all-important home advantage throughout the playoffs, which begin the last weekend of April. “We set that goal before the season started, says Watson. “We’ve talked about it a lot. The Rock lost the title game in Everett, Wash., 15-11 to the Washington Stealth last May. Had that game been played in Toronto, the result might have been different. *** MONTREAL - A former French rock star who was convicted of manslaughter in the beating death of his girlfriend has found a new job — in a Montreal theatre production. Bertrand Cantat spent four years in prison for the 2003 killing of popular French actress Marie Trintignant. The director of a prestigious Montreal theatre says she believes Cantat deserves a chance to reintegrate into society. Lorraine Pintal says Cantat will compose the music and perform in a Greek tragedy title by ac-

claimed playwright Wajdi Mouawad. But Pintal says while it is not her place to judge Cantat, nobody on the production team has forgotten the horror of his crime. The production opens in May 2012. INTERNATIONAL AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta National has opened its gates after a 45-minute delay to give workers time to clean debris from overnight storms before practice rounds at the Masters. The storms toppled trees and some power lines across town. There was no word on any damage to the golf course. Chain saws could be heard from various corners of the course Tuesday. In the final minutes before fans were allowed on Augusta National, numerous carts were hauling away tree limbs. Some marshals were picking up debris from fairways. *** STORRS, Conn. Kemba Walker, coach Jim Calhoun and the NCAAchampion Connecticut Huskies are coming home, with a big welcoming party waiting. The Huskies defeated Butler 53-41 on Monday night in Houston and are to arrive at Bradley International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. Calhoun is to speak to fans at the airport before the team heads to the campus for the celebration at Gampel Pavilion. On Monday night,

thousands of students stormed the court at Gampel Pavilion after the Huskies finished off their

third NCAA title. More than 8,000 fans, mostly students, nearly filled UConn’s home arena to

watch the game on the scoreboards and three large screens set up on the floor.

When Easter Bunny’s Gone, Colored Eggs Linger On After the Easter baskets have been put away and the chocolate bunnies are a melted memory, the colored hard-cooked eggs linger on. Remember, although your colored eggs were attractive as the centerpiece for Easter, they are a perishable food and should have been treated that way. If the eggs were left at room temperature for more than two hours, you should not eat them. Cracked or dirty eggs should be discarded. A wise tip to remember: Use plastic eggs for decorating and hunting so you can keep the real eggs safe to eat. You might be able to find plastic eggs on clearance in stores after Easter, so stock up for next year. Here some frequently asked questions and tips for storing and using hardcooked eggs: How long can hard-

cooked eggs in the shell be safely stored in the refrigerator? The eggs should be used within one week. Refrigerated fresh eggs can be kept for four to five weeks. Hardcooked eggs don’t last as long because the cooking process removes the protective coating. Why are some hardcooked eggs easier to peel than others? Eggs that only are a few days old are more difficult to peel because of the carbon dioxide in fresh eggs. As it ages, an egg takes in air, which helps separate the membranes from the shell, making it

easier to peel. Check the sell-by date on the carton of eggs. If more than 23 days remain before the sell-by date, the eggs may not peel well. To peel a hard-cooked egg, gently tap the egg on the countertop until the shell is finely crackled all over. Start at the large end (where an air bubble often is) and lightly pull the shell off. Once peeled, eggs should be eaten that day. One egg equals one ounce of lean meat, poultry or fish. This means you can use two eggs as a main dish at a meal or use eggs to help a more

GREEN EGG CASSEROLE This is a great side dish, especially for Easter dinner, or a main course vegetarian meal throughout the year. Reduced fat or fat-free mayonnaise is not recommended for this recipe, as it will change the flavor and texture of the dish. 2 packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise 6 to 8 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and chopped 3 green onions, roots removed and discarded, white and green tops chopped 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1 1/2 cups Panko or seasoned breadcrumbs 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons butter, softened Cooking oil spray 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, mayonnaise, eggs, onions, red

and black pepper, garlic salt and 1/2 cup of the breadcrumbs and 1/2 cup of the Parmesan cheese, until well-mixed. Spray a 1-1/2 quart baking dish with cooking oil spray. Spoon spinach mixture into the greased baking dish. 2. In a small bowl, mix together the butter, the remaining cup of breadcrumbs and the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until heated through and the topping is lightly browned. Serves 4 to 6. expensive protein food go further. For instance, you might add one chopped hard-cooked egg per serving and reduce the amount expensive seafood in a casserole. Many of us look at leftover hard-cooked eggs and see egg salad or deviled eggs. Add some interest to these standard recipes with some diced bacon or ham, chopped green or red bell pepper, or chopped pickles. For those who might have health concerns about consuming eggs, look for ways to decrease the use of the yolks. Make an egg salad using three whites to each yolk and add plenty of diced celery or green pepper. Use lowfat or fat-free mayonnaise or salad dressings, too. Chop hard-cooked eggs more easily using a pastry blender in a deep bowl. To make filling deviled eggs mess-free, scoop the filling mixture into a plastic bag, squeeze it toward the bottom and snip off a corner with scissors. You can squeeze just the right amount back into each egg white. If you’re looking for ways to use up your hardcooked eggs before Easter week is out, this recipe for Green Egg Casserole is the perfect answer. This

A pharmacist an urgent need to quickly told me that I needed one or empty the bladder or suffer two days in the hospital to an accident, and pain, usuflush out my kidneys. -- S.A. ally described as burning, ANSWER: Urinary during urination. Women with repeated tract infections fall into one of two types. Upper bladder infections need to be tract infections indicate that the kidneys are involved. These are serious and lesscommon infections. Lower urinary tract infections are bladder infections, and they

evaluated to see if the infection is a relapse (an infection with the same bacterium) or a new infection (infection with a different bacterium). The approach to treatment hinges on that information. If a woman has another infection with the same bacterium, the doctor can put her on the same antibiotic for a longer period of time and can continue to treat long after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with a reduced antibiotic dose. Another way to prevent a recurrence is to give the woman a prescription for an antibiotic that she takes after intercourse. Home remedies can be helpful. Drinking 8 ounces of cranberry juice daily benefits prevention of the most common cause of these infections. The kidney flush suggestion is not a

good one. The booklet on urinary tract infections delves deeper into these common maladies. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Lumps freak me out. My brother had bone cancer. When I see things sprouting on me, I think of cancer. Could it be? -- F.L. ANSWER: It’s not

likely to be bone cancer. A more likely bet is a ganglion. That’s a kind of cyst filled with thick, gelatinous material. It communicates with the wrist joint or with one of the wrist tendons. If it doesn’t hurt or interfere with wrist motion, you can ignore it. It if does, a doctor can remove it without much fuss. Many ganglion patients want their doctor to drain it. Drainage is possible, but the recurrence rate

is very high. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.
