PERSONAL ATTENDANT SERVICES - EXPLAINED Personal Attendant Services (PAS) are defined as routine ongoing care or services required by an individual living in an independent living environment.

The care and services provided enable the individual to engage in activities of daily living (ADLs) or to perform the physical functions required for independent living.

These types of services are called Personal Care. Many of the services associated with PAS include but are not limited to the following: bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, exercising, toileting, positioning, assisting with self-administered medications, routine hair and skin care, and transfer or ambulation. Also available is assistance with meal preparation and feeding, if you have certain physical limitations.

Funding for these types of services can be usually done through Medicaid, Long Term Care Insurance and Private Funds. For Medicaid covered services, one must meet eligibility qualifications. Individual must qualify financially and have functional limitations to merit acceptance into the Medicaid programs offered by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). Most of these services are now coordinated through Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) that are contracted with Health and Human Services Commission. Individuals may select to be a member of any HMO that is contracted in their geographic service area. Private Care is customized service managed and directed by the client or client's authorized individual. Private Care Individual Service Plans (ISP) include the same Activities of Daily Living (ADL) tasks as the Medicaid funded programs, as well as a greater amount of companion or stand by assistance. It can allow for the Personal Care Attendants to use client’s vehicles to transport the individuals to and from appointments and/or errands.

Consider these questions and how PAS may be a benefit. Do you live alone in your own home and need someone to help you with chores, shopping or light house cleaning? Do you need assistance with eating or meal preparation?

A little help is sometimes needed to allow an individual to remain in their own home and maintain their health and well being.

Seniors move for many reasons

• Perhaps their own home requires too much maintenance and attention or it’s too big now that all the children are gone • Personal safety of a senior living alone may be a concern for the adult children • Social isolation often becomes a factor • Health concerns are a big motivator – even if it is just to move closer to doctors

When you’ve finally made the decision, it might be tempting to back out when you and your family are actually faced with THE MOVE. Downsizing, organizing, cleaning out, packing, moving, unpacking, resettling is more than overwhelming. It might leave any of us frozen in inaction. At this point any family who has successfully made this journey would tell you DO IT now while the control is in your hands, rather than taken out of your hands by a fall or serious illness. So how do you get past that mountain of work required to make the move?

Here is one family's experience with hiring professional help from Generations Senior Moving and Transition Services:

I move my father about once a year, on average. I didn’t want to use the movers I used last time because, frankly, that move was a MESS. It took 2 full days to complete the move and my poor dad was stressed for an entire week afterward. Based on a recommendation from the facility my dad was moving into, I called Generations. From the second Peggy answered the phone, I had a good feeling. I told her that, ideally, I wated the move done in one day -one SHORT day -- if possible. Bless her and her team -- that’s exactly the way it went! Not only was this the fastest move we’ve ever had, but it was the smoothest, most organized move ever. She and her team were so careful and conscientious of not only my dad’s belongings, but my dad as a person (not just a job or a paycheck). Usually, I spend about a week unpacking, organizing, cleaning and getting rid of boxes after the actual move, but Peggy’s crew did ALL of the work for me. They unpacked just about everything (and quite remarkably, remembered where everything should go!) and hauled away all the boxes. It was the most efficient and stress-free move for us in the last 10 years -- and we’ve done about 10-12 so we can attest with experience. The move also fit within our budget so that was yet another huge relief. I can’t thank Peggy and her team enough for their hard work. Look for these color-coded housing types on the map & pages of this magazine …

ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITIES 55+ either age targeted or age restricted offer home ownership for adults 55+. These communities are maintenance free and offer a monthly association fee. Many of these communities are single family homes, cottages, patio homes, condominiums and townhomes. They offer a clubhouse with fitness center, pool, spa and other amenities.

SENIOR APARTMENTS offer all the amenities of regular apartment communities but have a minimum age requirement, in some communities it is 55 years of age, in others it is 62. Many of these apartments offer reduced rent for those that qualify, they are identified as “affordable” apartment communities. Both types of senior apartments offer many amenities such as pools, community rooms, and lots of activities. They do not offer meals.

INDEPENDENT LIVING WITH SERVICE COMMUNITIES offer older adult congregate housing that is generally replete with many amenities and social activities and services. Some independent living communities offer health care services, and can accommodate older residents with chronic health problems. Most communities offer restaurant-style meals, frequent events and country club style furnishings. They offer exercise rooms and planned activities, as well as resident clubs and interest groups.

ASSISTED LIVING & RESIDENTIAL LIVING What are types and sizes?

Type A: Resident must be physically and mentally capable of evacuating the facility unassisted. This may include the mobile non-ambulatory persons such as those who are in wheelchairs or electric carts and can transfer and evacuate themselves in an emergency. Does not require routine attendance during nighttime sleeping hours.

Type B: Resident may require staff assistance to evacuate and may be incapable of following directions under emergency conditions. May require attendance during nighttime sleeping hours. Residents may not be permanently bedfast.

Type C: Four-Bed facility which meets the minimum standards and program rules for enrollment with DADS as an adult foster care facility. (Requires a contract with DADS.) All residential care homes and assisted living facilities that provide services of a personal nature to more than three (3) residents, unrelated to the owner, must be licensed under the DADS licensure requirements.

RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES offer a home like setting usually in a single family home. They typically provide meals, laundry, house keeping, medication supervision, assistance with activities of daily living. Transportation may also be offered at some homes.

PERSONAL CARE HOMES this is a home in a residential care setting equipped to give adequate care to three residents. A fourth person may be added if it is a close relative to the owner.

Personal care services may be delivered, i.e. assistance with bathing, moving, feeding, general oversight of the physical and mental well-being of a person who needs assistance.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES offer help with all aspects of daily activities (bathing, grooming and dressing assistance, perhaps) in atmosphere of semi-private living units. There is a wide range of services and amenities offered in this category. Some facilities provide the basic care mandated by law. Others provide many activities, excellent meals and beautiful appointments.

All are currently licensed by the state as assisted living communities.

ALZHEIMER’S MEMORY CARE COMMUNITIES can be a special unit of a free-standing community designed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or memory-related disorders.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain, results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior.

Other senior living environments may be appropriate for residents in early, or even mild stage of the disease. However, unless they have a specialized dementia unit, transfer to another facility will be required as the disease progresses. Alzheimer’s Facility: A Type B Assisted Living that is certified to provide specialized services to residents, with Alzheimer’s or a related condition: Small: Small facilities are defined as those with 16 or less beds. (A/B) Large: Large facilities are defined as those with 17 or more beds. (A/B) SKILLED NURSING / PHYSICAL REHABILITATION COMMUNITIES Offer hospital-like attention in an institutional atmosphere. These facilities offer 24-hour supervision.

The amount of additional services, upkeep, food, and the structure of facilities can vary from nursing home to nursing home. They also may specialize in short term or acute nursing care, Intermediate care or long term skilled nursing care.

HOSPICE CARE care may be provided in the home or a senior care facility. Services can include pain management and a variety of emotional, spiritual and physical support issues.

HOME HEALTH CARE agencies offer skilled nursing services, wound care, distribution of medIcation, physical and rehabilitation therapies.

PERSONAL CARE SERVICES providers of licensed health care services in the home and companies non-medical assistance with such tasks as bathing, dressing, meal preparation and transportation.
