It’s the most beautiful time of year in Texas. Bluebonnets, paintbrushes and exceptional weather. We want our patients to experience the sights, sounds and smells of spring. When mobility is hard, the small, light Vivo 45 makes it easier to enjoy the natural wonders of Texas.
We provide ventilator based care in the home for pediatric patients, as well as nutritional supplies and support.

Angel is a loving and affectionate child. His smile lights up a room. He is a “typical boy” who loves the Hulk and Spider-Man, cool cars, jamming out to music, and gobbling up tacos and burgers.
Angel was born prematurely at seven and a half months, weighing 3.5 pounds. He spent the remainder of what would have been a full-term pregnancy in the hospital, kept in an incubator. Diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, a shunt was placed in Angel’s head, and he has endured 10 head surgeries throughout his life. Tragically, by age 7, both Angel’s stepfather, Julio, and mother, Perla, had passed away. His amazing Aunt, Esmerelda, and Grandmother, Maria, became his guardians.
Aunt Esmeralda consistently supported her sister Perla in caring for Angel’s complex medical and developmental needs. Yet, Esmerelda had a steep learning curve when she became his primary caregiver.
“I have slept in a hospital chair, skipped meals, cried from fear and joy. I have become an expert on my nephew's condition. I am a strong advocate and have had to make life-changing decisions. I am the guardian of a medically complex warrior.”
Esmeralda is part of the Traumatic Brain InjurySystems of Support for Kids (TBI SOS 4 Kids) project with the Center on Brain Injury Research & Training at the University of Oregon in collaboration with Texas A&M University-San Antonio and the University of Texas- Austin. Esmeralda is a Promotora, providing parent-to-parent support by delivering an individualized curriculum to caregivers of young children who sustained a brain injury and are still experiencing symptoms. The program is designed to provide information, introduce resources, encourage advocacy, and foster fellowship to support families as they journey through their child’s recovery.
If you are the caregiver of a young child, ages 0-7, who has sustained a concussion or TBI, we would love to connect with you.

“101 Advocacy was on FIRE at the meeting. Amazing! We were supported in exactly the way we needed (both leading up to and during the meeting), and we have gotten great outcomes!”
A concussion is caused by a bump, blow or jolt of the head or by a fall or hit to the body which causes the head and brain to quickly move back and forth within the skull resulting in chemical changes in the brain and cell structure. ese changes can a ect how someone behaves, feels, thinks, sleeps and can be emotionally and physically exhausting. ankfully, the overwhelming majority of concussion/tbi resolve within 2-6 weeks with proper treatment, rest and modi cations/accommodations to daily activity during recovery. It is important to RECOGNIZE, REST, AND RECOVER after a concussion/tbi.
Pediatric TBI is a “silent epidemic” impacting our children. e Texas Education Agency reports, “Approximately 6,000 Texas children are hospitalized each year due to TBI with 1,300 resulting in long-term disability.” A 2020 Center for Disease Control: National Center for Health Statistics report found an underreporting of concussions/tbi- a mere 6.8% of US children between 0-17 years old. is under-identi cation may be because the injury is masked by a di erent medical diagnosis, or symptom identi cation of a concussion/tbi is misunderstood. Yet,15% of U.S. high-school students self-reported one or more sports or recreation-related concussions within the preceding 12 months. ese contradicting reports suggest awareness of concussion/tbi identi cation, treatment, and prevention is imperative.
TBI SOS 4 Kids (Traumatic Brain Injury System of Support for Kids) is a project out of the University of Oregon’s Center on Brain Injury Research & Training (CBIRT). We are gathering information from community stakeholders (see page 4 to inform future projects, training and policy.
