FOR WORKING OUTDOORS IN THE COLD Winter weather can expose outdoor workers to frostbite, hypothermia, and cold stress, all of which can be fatal. It is important to know the wind chill temperature to better prepare and perform the work safely.

Follow these work practices to stay safe in cold weather......

Know the symptoms of cold stress; reddening skin, tingling pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness, and blisters. Dress properly; wear at least three (3) layers of loose-fitting clothing, insulated gloves and boots, and cover your head. Monitor your physical condition and that of your coworkers. Stay dry and pack extra clothes; moisture can increase heat loss from the body. Take frequent breaks in warm, dry areas. Drink warm liquids.

chainsaw Safety Awareness 1. Holding It.

Make sure to keep a steady grip on both handles of your chainsaw. Your thumbs and fingers must be completely wrapped around the handles. This is very important in order to reduce the force of a possible kickback. Make sure you have a good hold on your chainsaw.

2. Your Balance. Make sure you stand with your feet apart. To have the best possible balance, put your left foot slightly in front of your right foot.

3. Bend Your Knees. Don’t work with a curve in your back! Instead, bend your knees, especially when working in a low position. Make sure to rest your elbows on your thighs or knees.

4. Distance Yourself. Make sure that no one is below you or closer than 10 feet when you are working with a chainsaw. If you are working in a bucket with a partner, have a clear understanding who, when and how control of the cut off item is to be handled. Never let objects fall uncontrolled.

BEFORE STARTING.... 1.

Check everything. Controls, chain tension, bolts and handles.

2. CHECK YOUR CHAIN. Make sure that your chain is always sharp, and the lubrication reservoir is always full. 3. When You Start Your Saw. When starting your saw, make sure you are at least 10 feet away from the fueling area, with the chain’s brake engaged. When starting the saw, put one hand firmly on the front handle and your foot on the rear handle protection plate. Never “drop-start” the chainsaw!

APPRENTICE FAST FACT........

SELCAT is a Registered Apprenticeship with the United States Department of Labor Apprenticeship. In order to keep this registration, SELCAT has to adhere to a set of STANDARDS. In our STANDARDS, it states that...... “apprentices must have at least 144 hours of non-compensated classroom instruction.” What does that mean? Apprentices CAN’T be paid for classroom instruction. So, make sure to budget your money wisely to help prepare for the time you miss on the job for your classroom instruction.

KNOW YOUR KNOTS.. The Sheepshank Knot can be used to shorten a rope for temporary use. Carefully tied and drawn up tight, it is fairly reliable under a steady pull.
