(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County officials say Saturday’s Bulk Clean-Up event will move forward as planned but drivers should expect potential delays due to a major TxDOT highway closure taking place this same weekend.
Originally scheduled for last month but postponed because of rain, the clean-up will take place from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Road & Bridge Department just south of the Guadalupe County Jail.
Vehicles are being asked to enter from North Austin Street onto North Guadalupe Street, next to Tellus Equipment Solutions, and follow the marked route to the disposal area.
However, the Texas Department of Transportation will fully close SH 123 at I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, for bridge work. The closure will also affect the right lanes of both eastbound and westbound I-10 over SH 123.
“We do anticipate this slowing down the traffic, confusing people, or

possibly deterring people from participating,” said Guadalupe County Public Information Officer Carmen Davila. “We ask people to be patient and knowledgeable of the heavy use of the access road during the TxDOT closure.”
Despite the added traffic concerns, county leaders say

they remain committed to providing residents with the free opportunity to properly dispose of household items and help keep the community clean. A full list of accepted materials for this weekend’s Bulk Clean Up is available at www. guadalupetx.gov.

(Seguin) -- Just weeks after receiving a life-saving liver transplant, Seguin’s Sterling Carpenter is finally on the long road to recovery.
Now, while the teen remains hospitalized, her family especially those members of her late stepfather’s family Gilbert Montoya, are jumping into action to help ease the financial strain by hosting a fundraiser this Saturday at the American Legion Post 245.
The event will feature smoked chicken and sausage plates with all the trimmings for $13, a bake sale, a silent auction, a raffle, a car show plus activities for children.
Gilbert’s sister Alyssa Montoya says all proceeds will help cover ongoing medical costs and living expenses for Sterling and her mother, Kayla, who has been unable to work since summer due to caring for her daughter.
“Right now, she can’t be around family even for the holidays for two months. She can’t be around anybody because of her immune system; she has to make that sure she does not get sick or anything. Even now that she was able to get this transplant, her mom Kayla can’t work. So, she’s been out of work since June so the money that we are hoping to get is to be able to help financially. Every day, Sterling now that she has gotten her transplant will be going to the doctors just as much as she was going before. They have to make sure that her body is accepting this liver and that her body is healing
and that she doesn’t get sick and that the numbers are okay,” said Montoya.
Sterling, who has battled health complications since childhood, underwent her transplant on Oct. 31 with the help of a remarkable family connection. According to Montoya, it was her nephew Taylor Montoya, who stepped up to get his body in shape so that he could move forward as her living donor.
“Kayla has always been a part of our family like since she was little. We met her when she was very little and Taylor is Kayla’s brother so once he found out that she needed a transplant, he went and got tested and he found out a week later that he was a match and they had no idea,” said Montoya.
The fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion. The Wheels for Sterling Strong Benefit Car Show will also be onsite from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry is $20 per vehicle. The event will include trophies, live music and door prizes. Those interested can contact Abel Rodriguez at 830-660-5019.
Those wishing to contribute to the family but unable to attend can donate via CashApp ($mommamakayla09) or Venmo (@mommamakayla).
They may also contact Alyssa at 830-305-2838.
The American Legion Post 245 is located at 618 W. Kingsbury St.
(Seguin) -- As the temperatures begin to dip, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church is making sure that the adults in the community stay warm. A cold weather clothing distribution will be held this Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church’s east campus located at the corner of Dolle Avenue and Medlin Street.
Church member Marvel Maddox says the effort is about helping neighbors stay safe and comfortable. He says winter clothing is vital not
only for those who work outside but for those who rely on walking to get around.
“It’s really geared for adults and so it’s just all manner of clothing to keep a person warm. It’s jackets, sweaters, coats and there will just be racks and tubs outside and people can dig through items and pick out what they need,” said Maddox.
Again, the event is open to any adult in need of warm clothing. All items are free.

(Seguin) -- Car lovers and community members are invited to gather this Sunday for the 2nd Annual Steven Garcia Jr. Memorial Car Show – a fundraiser dedicated to carrying on the late Seguin High School teacher’s legacy of supporting students pursuing careers in the trades.
The fundraiser, hosted by the Steven Garcia Jr. Memorial organization, will be held in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Stefani Garcia says the event is fitting for her uncle -- a man who was not only a car enthusiast, but whose career allowed him to support others.
“My uncle was a well-known person in Seguin. He was a DJ for 20 plus years, and he was a Seguin High School welding teacher and even before that, he was an auto mechanics teacher before they changed it to welding. So, he was with Seguin High School for 20 plus years,” said Trevino, Garcia’s niece.
The car show will feature a

wide range of categories including classic and modern cars and trucks, motorcycles, lowriders, imports, and hot rods. Food trucks, vendors, and raffles will also be available throughout the day.
Trevino says her uncle’s giving spirit will always be remembered

and hopes the community comes out to ensure that his legacy of helping others continues.
“Throughout his career with being a teacher, he helped out a lot of students whether that was helping them out with clothes, shoes, (or) supplies to help them get started with a career so we just want to give back to the community and continue his legacy of helping people – so it’s supporting trades’ students – agriculture, welding, cosmetology -- so depending on how well we do with the car show will determine how many scholarships we will be able to give out this year,” said Trevino.
The cost to enter the car show is $20 a vehicle. Registration will be held on the day of the show from 9 a.m. to noon. Awards for the various categories will be presented at 2 p.m.
All proceeds from Sunday’s car show will again go toward scholarships for Seguin High School trade students. The Seguin Coliseum parking lot is located at 950 S. Austin St.

(Seguin) -- The Dasher family of Seguin wrapped up their unforgettable run on Family Feud Wednesday night—walking away with smiles, memories, and a grand total of $68,460 in winnings.
After back-to-back victories on Monday and Tuesday, the Dashers returned to the national stage for one final round of fast-paced fun. While their luck ran out during Wednesday’s show, the family still added another $3,000 to their total prize money, sealing an exciting three-night streak that had their hometown cheering from start to finish.
The Dasher team -- parents Monica and Robert, and their three adult daughters Kaitlyn, Emily, and Amanda -- quickly became local
celebrities this week as Seguin residents tuned in night after night to root for them.
For daughter Amanda Dasher, the Family Feud adventure began more than two years ago with a single online application.
“I literally just applied,” said Dasher. “I already knew who I’d take, so I put them all down and called my family to tell them. I said, ‘Hey, so I applied— and they want to interview us!’ We freaked out! We’ve watched it for years, especially at Christmas. We make teams, we play Fast Money—we go all out. We were ready for this show.”
Amanda says the experience was more than just a chance to win. She says it was a dream come true.
“Apply! See what happens,” said Dasher. “It’s an experience I’ll never be able to fully put into words. But it’s real. They do call you. They will pick you. We’re a regular family from Seguin, Texas and it happened to us.”
The Dashers filmed their episodes in March at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, as part of Family Feud’s special Las Vegas-themed series.
And as for Amanda? She says her game show journey might not be over just yet.
“I’m hoping The Price is Right will call me,” she laughed. “I want to go there next!”
Those who missed the Dasher family’s episodes can look out for reruns or find clips of their appearances on YouTube.

(Seguin) -- GRMC is helping the community fight back against the high prevalence of diabetes in the Seguin area. The hospital's endocrinology team is hosting a World Diabetes Day event on Friday at GRMC.
Dr. Jonven Attia, an endocrinologist at GRMC, says they are working to help diabetic patients and those at risk of developing diabetes. Dr. Attia says there's a significant diabetic population locally, and it's impacting the lives of too many people. She says that's one of the reasons why the team is organizing a major World Diabetes Day event.
"The whole point of this event is really to educate people in this area and really help them get the resources they need and the care they need. And if they haven't even been tested, to be tested for diabetes. That's the hope that we kind of bring across here in Seguin during that day of the event," said Attia.
Attia says she sees many patients who don't understand diabetes and who don't really understand why it's so important to keep it under control. She says diabetes can lead to all kinds of complications, and the key is to manage your care to improve those outcomes.
"Really, what I usually see is patients here come in, and they'll spend an hour with me in their diabetes first visit. They say, well, 'I didn't know that', and 'I didn't understand that', and 'why hasn't anybody said anything?' And the problem is that diabetes has been moving on at a faster pace in research and resources and understanding, and we have more gadgets to really control our diabetes better than we ever had before. (We want to) really go out and express that to the community and to our fellow providers as well. So that they have the power to educate our patients too. That's the hope of this event that we do on Diabetes Awareness Day," said Attia.
Friday's World Diabetes Awareness event at GRMC will feature several vendor booths offering services and products that can help improve the quality of life for people with diabetes. Dr. Attia says it also features some
other resources to make sure that people get the help and support that they need in their fight against diabetes.
"We're also going to have the MASH people there. So, what's MASH? MASH (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis) is just a fancy way of saying fatty liver. So, the American Diabetes Association just came up with new guidelines about six months ago saying that we are starting to screen, especially type 2 diabetes for fatty liver because we're seeing a rise of liver cirrhosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. I have patients who've never touched alcohol in their life, and now they're having liver cirrhosis and ending up on a liver transplant list. Now we want to screen them like we screen, you know, diabetics for eye problems like retinopathy to make sure they don't become blind. Like we screen them for kidney disease, so you don't end up on dialysis. We screen them for neuropathy, so you don't lose a leg. The earlier you get your diabetes under control and the more we do screening and identifying those complications before they become a detrimental problem -- we can do something about it before it's too late. That is what we want patients to come and be more educated about," said Attia.
Attia encourages everyone to come out and learn more about improving the overall health of our community. She says this is not just an event for diabetics.
"I think everybody should come—whether you have diabetes or not. You know somebody who does. Having diabetes is very frustrating for that person. It's not easy. They need family support, spouse support, friends' support. Everybody knows a diabetic," said Attia.
The World Diabetes Day event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 14, in GRMC's East Campus Building, next door to the Guadalupe Regional Wellness Center. The free community event is dedicated to education, support, and connection on this important public health issue.

(Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says President Trump “remains in exceptional health.” Leavitt made the remark following a question about an MRI the president underwent last month that raised concern since the advanced imaging is not normally part of a routine physical examination. Trump received a medical evaluation for a “semiannual physical” at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and his physician said the president continues to “demonstrate excellent overall health.” Leavitt also shared with reporters that his “full results were viewed by attending radiologists and consultants, and all agree that President Trump remains in exceptional physical health.”
(San Diego, CA) -- A new study finds GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are linked to lower rates of colon cancer death. Researchers at the University of California San Diego found that colon cancer patients taking the blood sugar and weight control drugs were half as likely to die within five years. The highest survival rates were among those who had a very high body mass index to begin with.
(Los Angeles, CA) -- A common chemical used by dry cleaners and at home in stainless steel polish, spot cleaners and some adhesives is being linked to liver disease. Researchers at University of Southern California’s medical school say tetrachloroethylene, often called PCE, is associated with a three times greater risk of liver fibrosis. That’s a buildup of scar tissue that can cause liver cancer, liver failure, even death. The study found that about seven-percent of America’s adults have detectable levels of PCE. Researchers say they found that people with higher incomes are at higher risk, theorizing that could be because they’re more likely to use dry cleaning services.
(Portland, OR) -- Poor air quality has been linked to an increase in emergency room visits. The Oregon Health Authority tracks real-time health trends across the state and they found when air quality worsened, visits to emergency rooms increased. The visit were for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, anxiety and other respiratory or stress-related symptoms. The information can help hospitals prepare for health impacts of smoke and other air pollution events as they happen.
