Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- For many veterans who gathered in Seguin this Veterans Day, the sight of the traveling Vietnam Wall brought back a rush of memories — some they had long tried to forget, and others they were finally ready to face.
Veterans, families, and visitors from across the region traveled to Seguin’s Smokey Joe Williams Field on Tuesday for the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) and Vietnam Wall — an 80-percent scale replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. The exhibit also includes monuments commemorating each significant military action since WWII, leading up to Afghanistan.
Among those quietly tracing the etched names of fallen comrades was Jimmie Cole, a Vietnam veteran from New Braunfels who served with the U.S. Marines from 1965 to 1966.
Tribute, pg. 2

Tribute, continued.
Wearing his red Marine Corps jacket, Cole stood before the wall, overcome with emotion as he found the names of men he once called brothers.
“When we first went in May of 1965, there were 3,000 of us. By the time we left in June of ’66—in my platoon of 75, I’m one of five,” said Cole.
For Cole, the visit was more than remembrance. He says it was also a moment of long-overdue recognition for those who served in a war that divided a nation.
“It’s just now getting around to where they are honoring the Vietnam Veteran instead of the way that we were greeted when we first got home. I didn’t have any friends when I came home. They learned something from the other war that proceeded this one, where they didn’t honor us but at least they did learn to honor the ones that did come home later. The ones that I was greeted (not so kindly), I have nothing for them no more,” said Cole.
Proud of the effort to bring the traveling exhibit to the city was Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen says the meaningful event should serve as a reminder to all.
“I want them to always remember that our community worked for a long time to bring this and the remembrance and they came together as a community and as a coalition of veterans to have this be a success and I want folks to remember the Seguin/Guadalupe County Vietnam War casualties. We had them. We had six of them – Felipe Duran Camarillo (US Army); Jose Ballentine Campos (US Navy); Manuel Reyes Denton (US Navy); James Ray Fuller (US Air Force); Charles William Gaches (US Army); and Pedro Acevedo Gonzalez (US Army) -- all the way from the date of loss of ’68; ’63; ’69; ’72; ’70 and then of course, we are privileged and honored to have Robert Lewis who currently resides in McQueeney. He was a captive for five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam,” said Dodgen.
Tribute, pg. 3

Tribute, continued.
Dodgen says she urges the community never to take the freedoms they enjoy for granted and hopes that this year’s full-fledged effort provides a continued daily reminder to honor these individuals for their sacrifices.
“These are the people who allow us to have the freedoms that we have today and those who are still serving and are going to serve and we need to remember them each and every day. As the general who spoke today, talked about, everyday should be Veterans Day and we need to be appreciative and keep them in our prayers,” said Dodgen.
For the mayor, experiencing the traveling wall, especially in her hometown, was also personal. She says it brought back favorite memories of her own special veteran.
“Jerry Greiner, my late husband was a Vietnam Vet. He was in the last part of the Vietnam War but was very very proud of that and in the U.S. Navy and so, yes, it is personal and I have to share with you a cute little tidbit – is that our very first date was to the Vietnam War
Memorial which was traveling in San Antonio and he bought me ice cream. No food but ice cream. So, it’s a great day,” said Dodgen.
Tuesday’s events were the culmination of months of collaboration among the Doug Herrle Disabled American Veterans Chapter 61, the Guadalupe County Veterans Council, and the City of Seguin. The exhibit’s grand opening featured the singing of the national anthem by Clint Taft, music by the Seguin High School Mariachi Band, and the presentation of the colors by the American Indian Color Guard.
The day’s observance also featured the annual parade through downtown Seguin and a keynote address from Major General Bob Parker, U.S. Air Force (Retired), during the annual Veterans Day Ceremony held next door in the Seguin Coliseum.
Also surrounding the Vietnam Wall stood the Seguin Field of Honor®, a sea of nearly 300 American flags — each one dedicated to a veteran, active-duty service member, or first responder.
The traveling exhibit will remain open around the clock through Saturday, Nov. 15. There is no cost to enter.

Rev. Dr. Robert James Sebesta died on Monday October 6, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Robert, known as Bob by his friends and family, was 93 years old when he passed. Bob was born on November 16, 1931 in a farmhouse near Caldwell, Texas in Burleson County to Joe Frank and Julia Bravenec Sebesta.
Bob is survived by Claribel, his wife of 70 years, his son Robert J. (Rob) Sebesta, Jr. (Melinda) and their children Major James Sebesta (Sarah), Olivia Jakubowski (Tomek), and Julia Sebesta, his daughter Drs. Cheryl Banks (Bill) and their children Drs. Kristen Beaver (Jared), Austin Banks, and Dr. Emily Banks and daughter Claire Sebesta (Dr. Jackie) and their children Taylor Smith (Yesenia), Joy Smith, and Jordan McGeehon (Timo), 9 great grandchildren (and one on the way), and his brother Rev. Dr. Daniel Sebesta (Marsha).
Bob’s childhood education occurred in 3 room Hlavaty Rural School, from grades 1 through 9. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1948. While living at home, with his parents and 3 brothers, Bob attended the CzechMoravian Brethren Church in Caldwell.
Bob graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos in 1952 and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1955. Always striving to learn and grow, Bob earned his Doctorate in Ministry from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1983.
In the summer of 1952 Bob met the love of his life in Dulac Louisiana and in June of 1955 he married Claribel Joan Brown of the rural community of Raymond near Jennings, Louisiana. Starting their life together and Bob’s passionate ministry career immediately after, Bob was ordained as a Presbyterian pastor at his first church in Rocksprings Texas in July of 1955.
Bob lovingly served 5 Presbyterian congregations in Texas during his 42 ½ years of ministry: Rocksprings, Portland, Harlingen, San Marcos, and Pecos. Bob believed his wife Claribel was half of his ministry because she taught, worked with women’s groups, and served in the community of all of their churches.
He felt called by God to pastor small churches and enjoyed all parts of a small church’s life: preacher, teacher, administrator, organizer, counselor, community relations. He especially enjoyed teaching the Bible, which he continued to do through most of his retirement.
Bob’s passion for helping others extended into a strong commitment to community service. Bob actively served in leadership roles in Kiwanis and Lions Clubs in the communities where they lived. Continuing his dedication to service in retirement, he served as Board President for Habitat for Humanity and was recognized as an outstanding facilitator of Parents Helping Parents program for 14 years.
In addition to church specific activities, Bob enjoyed gardening, dancing, history, researching and writing family history, genealogy, and personal memories. He was especially passionate about music and loved singing in the church choir and attending concerts whenever possible.
Bob and Claribel loved to travel. Early in their marriage they lived in Scotland for a year where they both attended St Mary’s College at the University of St Andrews. While living there, they spent the summer of 1957 touring Europe, visiting 10 different countries, covering 6188 miles in 75 days on their Lambretta motor scooter (the Blue Dart).
Through Bob’s passionate faith and loving embrace of others, he touched countless lives far beyond his local church ministry. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue to touch lives for years to come.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at Seguin Assisted Living, the nurses and aids from Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services and our dear Seguin Angels for the tremendous love and care shown to Bob and Claribel over the past several years.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Bob on November 15, 2025 at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church Seguin with a light lunch after. The family requests that persons wishing to give memorials make contributions to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 1121 E. Walnut St., Seguin, Tx 78155 or the charity of their choice.
You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

(Silver Spring, MD) -- The FDA is eliminating its highest warning label from hormone replacement therapy products for menopause. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said the so-called “black box” warning on hormone therapy pills, creams and other treatments scared women from using the drugs that Dr. Makary says are very beneficial. Makary says the warning about breast cancer was placed on the products based on outdated studies from the early 2000s. He went on to call the use of the labels one of the “greatest mistakes in modern medicine.”
(Ottawa) -- Canada is losing its measles elimination status and America is at risk, too. The Pan American Health Organization took action against Canada on Monday after the country failed to curb a measles outbreak for 12 consecutive months. PAHO [[ PAY-ho ]] is warning the U.S. could follow in January, if it doesn’t curb an ongoing outbreak. America’s measles outbreak began in Texas in January of this year and then spread to New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas, with current measles cases in Utah, Arizona and South Carolina. The reappearance of measles is blamed on a declining vaccination rate.
(Waltham, MA) -- An intriguing study demonstrates that CRISPR gene editing may help people who have dangerously high cholesterol levels. The Phase One clinical trial’s results, which involved just 15 patients, were published over the weekend in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute is one of the study’s investigators. He found that giving an infusion of an experimental drug via CRISPR and altering just one gene cut LDL cholesterol and triglycerides by about half. Those conditions are major risk factors for heart disease.
(New Orleans, LA) -- A new study suggests coffee may help protect against an irregular heart beat. More than ten-million Americans live with a heart disorder known as atrial fibrilation that could lead to heart failure and blood clots. The results of a four-year clinical trial presented at the American Heart Association conference underway in New Orleans shows that drinking just one cup of coffee per day appears to have a protective effect on Afib recurrence. For a long time, doctors have tried to understand the impact coffee has on Afib.
