(Seguin) -- The heroic efforts that quickly mobilized in Seguin and Guadalupe County during the COVID-19 pandemic were remembered Tuesday, March 4.
March 4th was the date of the first reported COVID-19 case in Texas in 2020. The date is also now officially observed in the state of Texas as COVID-19 Heroes and Memorial Day.
Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) commemorated
and recognized the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices made by local healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chelsea Maldonado, GRMC director of marketing, says it is difficult to forget the frontline health care workers and other essential workers who demonstrated unwavering bravery in the face of a global pandemic – a pandemic in which 95,000 Texans lost their lives.

Today is Ash Wednesday. It is the official countdown to Easter marking the 40 days before the holiday, excluding Sundays. Today also marks the return of Ashes-To-Go on Gonzales Street outside of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. See story on page 2.
(Seguin) -- The school board's second attempt to address Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil's evaluation has yielded the same results.
After approximately four hours behind closed doors, the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees emerged from the closed session with no action taken in open session on Dr. Vijil’s evaluation. This included no contract extension or salary increase. Last month, the board engaged in
a similar process. However, at that time, the board approved the results of the evaluation that had been conducted in executive session. But the board has yet to offer any public details about how it feels about her performance. While the board on Monday was unable to share why her evaluation was again brought to the table, Dr. Vijil says she can at least confirm that the board has provided her with a new sense of direction. (Seguin) – Today marks the start of the Lenten season and the continuation of the annual Ashes-ToGo event here in Seguin.
Pastors from Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and Frieden’s United Church of Christ will again hit the streets this Ash Wednesday for the distribution of ashes on Gonzales Street just outside the walls of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.
Pastor Marcus Bigott, of Emanuel’s, says this year is a milestone as it marks the 12th year for the distribution of ashes and blessings to anyone in the community.
“Maybe the day is just too busy, and we can’t get to church but we want to begin with that reminder that we are not only human but
that we are loved and cherished by God so much so that Christ was willing to die for us. We invite folks to Gonzales Street right next to the church to begin that time of prayer. It’s for everyone. If they are in a car or if they are on a bike, skateboard, want to walk up – no matter, what it is, we will meet and greet and share a time of not only receiving the ashes upon the head but a short time of prayer will also be given with each individual, with each of the cars as we have in the past,” said Bigott.
Bigott says the drive-thru format also allows local pastors the opportunity to reach out to even more people and share with them the reminder of the Lenten Season.
“Ash as a sign of penitence takes us all the way back to the Middle Ages in a custom of beginning
Lent with ashes and especially the ashes and the cross placed upon the forehead. It ties us even further back into the ancient Biblical story of a time set aside to not only find time for prayer and meditation but to let go of those distractions and those things that seemingly pull us away from God – returning to life in a very simple, very very rooted to the earth, very humble sense of saying yes, it’s a busy time, it’s a crazy time but let us go back to the true inner being of who we are and who God has called us to be,” said Bigott. The annual Ashes-To-Go will be held today from noon to 1 p.m. Residents are encouraged to be on the lookout for directional signs off of West Court Street near the Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
COVID, continued.
“We really had to come together as a facility and not just individual departments because there are so many departments within out four walls, and we all work together collaboratively here and there and we all work together very well but the pandemic was just completely different. We had to extend our ER into places that are not an ER. We had to make sure that certain rooms were sealed properly, and we had to make sure that we had the correct gear to care for the patients that came in and all of that takes more than just one or two or even three departments. It was across the entirety of the organization from outpatient to inpatient to registration to you wouldn’t even think maintenance – materials – you don’t think about healthcare in the sense that there’s more than just nurses and doctors here,” said Maldonado.
In observance, Maldonado says GRMC Chief Executive Officer Robert Haynes acknowledged the local heroes at GRMC who collaboratively worked together to save lives.
“I will echo our CEO Mr. (Robert) Haynes’ message. He always says that he is amazed at how quickly everyone jumped on board and was just a big support group and did whatever they needed to do to make sure that our patients within the walls were
taken care of, our employees were taken care of and so it just really is acknowledging how much each individual did outside of our normal scope of work for that pandemic,” said Maldonado.
As a community thank you, Maldonado says a team of folks from GRMC spent the day on Tuesday showing their appreciation to the Seguin Police Department, the Seguin Fire Department, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Services.
“We handed them cupcakes and just wanted to get in front of them and just say our gratitude and say thank you because again, our organization came together and did so well at executing the things that we needed to do to take care of our patients but that also extends outside our walls. We are an organization that extends deeply into the community. We are rooted in our first responders and our city and our county and so there’s a lot of people outside of these four walls that are instrumental in making sure we were successful during the pandemic, and we wanted to make sure that they were acknowledged, and we thank them as well,” said Maldonado.
The designation of March 4th as COVID-19 Heroes and Memorial Day was made official in 2023 with the approval of House Bill 2166 by the Texas Legislature.
Superintendent, continued.
“So, there was obviously a closed session that took place and when the board of trustees came back out, there was no action taken. So, we are going to continue to work together to work in the same direction – be aligned with the goals that are in place,” said Dr. Vijil.
Board President Denise Crettenden says because it's a personnel issue, there are limits to what she can say. Crettenden confirmed that the district will work in partnership with Dr. Vijil to ensure the best education for all students in the Seguin ISD.
“I think this is the hardest part of not being on the school board and understanding how things are. One of the things that we just can’t say much about is the superintendent evaluation and personnel. There are just a lot of things that we just can’t say when they are discussed in closed session, but I think that the board and our superintendent are going to move forward working on things with the district and for the district and we didn’t take any action on extending the contract. There are still two years and a little bit of that, and we did not move for an increase in salary,” said Crettenden.
Dr. Vijil still has two years left on her existing three-year contract. That contract was approved when the board formally hired her in February of last year. Dr. Vijil’s contract has a base salary of $231,000 per year. Dr. Vijil previously served as superintendent of schools in the Fabens ISD near El Paso. She was initially named Seguin ISD’s deputy superintendent while the district was under the leadership of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez. Shortly after she arrived, Dr. Vijil was named the interim superintendent when Dr. Gutierrez resigned to take another position in the Austin area. The board later removed the interim tag and then formally hired Dr. Vijil as superintendent a year ago. When her time as interim superintendent is combined with her current position, she's served as the district's top administrator for approximately a year and a half.

Joyce McFarren Bowerman, a vibrant and loving soul, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, on February 15, 2025. Born in Marion, Indiana, Joyce’s life was one of adventure, dedication, and boundless generosity.

The first in her family to earn a college degree, she received her teaching credentials from Ball State University. Joyce’s career spanned from Indiana to California and eventually to Germany, where she taught for the Department of Defense.
At just 5’2”, Joyce was living proof that “great things come in small packages.” She radiated energy and enthusiasm. A natural extrovert, Joyce was a community builder, a social organizer, and a friend to all. From Seattle to Canton, Ohio she built strong villages in which to raise her two daughters. In 1977, she found her final and most beloved home in Seguin, Texas, where she became a self-proclaimed “born-again Texan.” There, she led “The Renegades,” a group of spirited elementary educators, leaving an indelible mark on the

Sylvia “Toby” Young, of Seguin, passed from death unto eternal life on February 25, 2025.
Toby was born in McQueeney, Texas on February 9, 1949, to Gomecinda (Cortez) and Jose Young, Sr.
She is survived by her two sisters, Maria “Chita” Young Teneyuque and Ofelia “Faye” Young Gloria (husband Joe Gloria), a host of nephews and nieces and many other family and friends.
Toby is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Anita Young, Lydia Young, Minerva “Minnie” Garcia, Lucia “Lucy” Aleman, and her brothers, Reinaldo Young, Rudolfo “Rudy” Young, and Joe Young, Jr.
Toby always brought a unique perspective to every connection she formed, whether it was professional or personal. She honed her professional skills for over 30 years at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she had an eye for detail and a commitment to excellence. Toby’s career was not limited to just Southwestern Bell, but she also used her artistic flair playing musical instruments at church and as a professional photographer. Her photos could always capture the beauty and joy of weddings, quinceaneras, parties, and a myriad of other festivities. Toby always had a passion for capturing life’s most precious moments; as in her life, she always wanted the beauty of each musical note and/or photograph to be presented in the best light possible.
Toby offered her strength beyond measure to those she loved. Known for her candid honesty and tireless work ethic, she was a loyal friend and a steadfast ally, always willing to lend a helping hand. Her unique personality set her apart. She valued authenticity and remained true to herself without concern for other’s opinions.
Toby was an avid fan of solitaire on the computer and football on her television, two of her favorite leisure pursuits that mirrored her independent
spirit and the confidence she held in herself.
A proud alumnus of Seguin High School’s Class of 1968, Toby has left a lasting impact in her beloved hometown. Her life’s journey has been marked by a rich blend of professional, personal achievements and endeavors.
Most of all, she was renowned for her unwavering faith in God. Her dedication to her faith and community was exemplified by her long-standing membership at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas, where she served as a Guadalupana for many years.
Above all, she believed that Christ Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. She loves Jesus. Her hope is in Jesus. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 states, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
On February 25, 2025, Toby received her crown. She’s beheld her Heavenly Father’s face. She’s touched her Savior’s hand. It is well with her soul. She is home.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church followed by the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 10 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. RFK Jr. Backs Measles Vaccine
(Washington, DC) -- Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is pushing for people to get vaccinated against measles. Kennedy, who has been known for vaccine skepticism, made the call in an opinion piece on Fox News Sunday. Last week authorities reported the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015 as a measles outbreak has led to hospitalizations in Texas. While noting that the decision to vaccinate is a personal one, Kennedy said the vaccine protects children and contributes to community immunity.
Dozen New Measles Cases In Texas (Austin, TX) -- A measles outbreak in Texas continues to grow. Dr. Jennifer Shuford, who heads State Health Services, says there are now 158 cases. That’s one-dozen more than what was reported on Friday. She says they’re surging resources into West Texas. That’s the epicenter of the outbreak. The vaccination rate in tiny Gaines County is the lowest in the state.
(Sacramento, CA) -- Californians support Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program, despite proposed funding cuts by the U.S. House. According to a poll by the California Health Care Foundation 75 percent of Californians support the program. Strong support exists across political lines. Ninety-one percent of Democrats, 76 percent of independents, and 50 percent of Republicans believe everyone should have access to health care, even with increased federal spending. Additionally, 67 percent oppose reducing Medi-Cal’s federal funding, which currently serves nearly 15 million people, or nearly 40 percent of the state’s population.
(San Antonio, TX) -- There are high hopes for the use of a party drug to treat post traumatic stress in veterans. It’s being pioneered at the U-T Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Alan Peterson says his team is looking at how to combine MDMA with an already established treatment that will improve outcomes. He says this is all done in a clinical setting with microdoses of MDMA. Veterans will then work with a therapist to revisit their trauma as a way to process what happened. The school has received a nearly five-million dollar grant to run trials with the hope of, eventually, winning FDA approval.
