SISD gets update on district wide bond projects

(Seguin) – Although it has taken a little longer than they had hoped, construction at AJB is finally ending.

Sharing the update with members of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is Bill Lewis, the consultant tasked with overseeing the district’s bond projects.

Lewis says A.J. Briesemeister has officially undergone a complete

transformation at its current site. He says the 2019 voter-approved project was put into motion approximately one year later.

“AJB is 99 percent complete. Everything that is going on right now is just touchups and is going and finding things that aren’t sealed up right or maybe if we don’t like the way

it looks and those kinds of things –kind of getting the touchups done at this point,” said Lewis.

Lewis says the original deadline for its completion was August 2023, the start of this current school year. However, he says there are always challenges when you are building around kids and are forced to provide minimal interruption for the students and the school as a whole.

Nonetheless, he says there has been a great team effort from the very

beginning. He especially applauds the staff and administrators for their patience and for making things happen.

Lewis says the final notch on the project wrapped up on the west end of the campus.

“The last was the building that kind of sits off by itself. It used to be a science building. It was the last building that was renovated and was just completed (last week) and so they will be moving in (this) week.

Do you have the ugliest AC in town?

Business to host AC giveaway

(Seguin) – Something ugly and lurking in your yard might make you the Diamond Air’s 25th-anniversary contest giveaway winner. The local AC and heating services company in Seguin is seeking nominations for its “Ugliest AC” contest. The winner selected will win a brand-new AC unit.

Owner Krista Moreno says the idea for the contest is simple.

“We are looking for the ugliest air conditioner in Seguin. We are trying to help someone that hasn’t been able to put one in or be able to afford a new air conditioner so there’s a lot of them out there. You do have to currently have air conditioning installed in your home so it can’t be a new one. It has to be a retrofit. So, we are just trying to help somebody out and give it away and celebrate our anniversary because Seguin has been so good to us,” said Moreno.

Moreno says she knows that ugly AC units exist out there and says over the years of doing business, they’ve seen their fair share.

“The picture that is on our website, is an actual air conditioner that we took out of our scrapyard and put in front of our building to take a picture of,” said Moreno.

Moreno says they are excited about being able to host this contest and providing a brand-new inside and outside unit system. She says residents in Guadalupe County are welcome to nominate themselves, a friend, a family member, or neighbor.

“Go on there. It can’t hurt. I mean it’s a very simple

application. It’s a picture of you. It’s a picture of your air conditioner. It’s your name, address, phone number and email address. There’s some terms and conditions that are required. Take pictures of them and send them in. We are going to start going through them one by one. We will be calling people with the ugliest pictures, and we do have on there that we would need to be able to go out and take a look at it and make sure the electrical is good, up to code, things like that so that we can actually do the installation,” said Moreno.

The deadline to submit an entry is Friday, April 12 at 10 p.m. Leading up to the drawing on April 19, Diamond Air will be hosting online giveaways every Friday and offering some great prizes.

Visit its website at acrepairseguin.com or Facebook page for more details on the contest or to submit an entry for the ugliest AC in Seguin.

AJB, continued.

That’s for our special education services. There’s also some CTE classes, robotics classroom – there’s a computer lab in there. There are some offices in there for special education and other folks,” said Lewis.

Lewis was also sure to mention that the final portable for that campus was officially hauled away.

He says once the final details at AJB are addressed, then the school district can turn its full attention elsewhere.

“As soon as they finish, we get the punch list and when we get to the point that we are happy with everything on the building then, it will be finished and then we will move on from there,” said Lewis

AJB, continued.

Also, it’s only been a few months since the district has been operating with one foot at AJB and the other at the new baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School. Lewis says the $7.8 million project is reportedly running smoothly and on schedule.

“That project is going along great. They are moving fast. They are working fast. Everything is on time. The field turf, the actual turf for the field is coming in about a month early so you will start to see that going down probably the first eight, nine days of April. You will see that going down. That takes about a month or so to get in and get installed but you will see that going quick. The fences will be going up at some point. You already see the fence poles. The light poles come in in the middle of April, the concession, restroom – the ticket booth, the blocking is almost complete for that and then you will see the façade blocking go up. So, it’s going really quick,” said Lewis.

The plan, currently, is to have the field ready to go in time for summer programming and skills clinics.

Behind-the-scenes work is well underway for the Seguin ISD’s first-ever agriculture science facility. The $9 million ag center, being built at 1329 Ilka Road, was

approved by voters in 2022. Lewis says the last few weeks have been spent on drafting plans. He says these plans are crucial in ensuring students get the very best.

“So, the planning is going great with our Ag teachers. We meet every few weeks and they are providing all the input of what they need and it’s going to be state-ofthe-art for what they ask for. They are getting what they ask for as far as being able to house the animals, clean the animals, show the animals. There is a practice arena there as well. There is a separate building for poultry. It’s going to have all the components that they are needing to raise what I call ‘champion animals,’ and it’s going to be a great opportunity because Ag is such a big part of this community and we’ve never had an Ag barn here, so this is going to be awesome. So, hopefully way more kids can get involved and have great places to care for their animals,” said Lewis.

Another project that is also moving along and will be wrapping up very soon is the expansion of Ball Early Childhood Center.

District officials say they are 90 percent complete at Ball. The project includes new classrooms. A punch list walk-through for that campus is slated for sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Ashlyn Strother Honored as NFCA National Pitcher of the Week

LOUISVILLE, KY -- Senior Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) has been named NFCA/Wilson National Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. This marks the second time in Strother’s career she has received the major weekly award (first: Mar. 15, 2022).Strother, who was named the SCAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, led the No. 15 Texas Lutheran softball team (12-2, 5-1 SCAC) in the circle to four wins over the course of six games last week.

The Seabrook, Texas, native totaled 47 strikeouts and 23 innings of shutout ball across her four appearances. With those shutouts, Strother lowers her earned run average to a SCAC-leading 0.60. Strother now leads the SCAC with nine wins and 73 strikeouts this season.

Strother won all four of her starts, throwing the second perfect game of her career on March 22 and her third and fourth career individual no-hitters over the weekend. Strother would strike out 13 out of 15 batters faced in her perfect game against Dallas on Friday and 12 out of 16 batters faced in her no-hitter on Saturday, March 23. She allowed just eight baserunners across her four outings, holding opponents to go just 5-for-73 (.068). Strother would become TLU Softball’s all-time strikeout leader in her start against Southwestern on Monday, surpassing Cathy McBride’’s previous record of 502 over the course of the 1994 through 1997 seasons. Strother reached the record in 456.2 innings while McBride’s came over a career spanning a program record of 617.2 innings. Strother, who currently has 541 strikeouts, is seventh amongst active Division-III pitchers in career strikeouts and ranks fourth in SCAC history in the category. STD Rates Increase In Senior Citizens (Undated) -- Rates of sexually transmitted diseases are skyrocketing among older Americans. This week the CDC revealed rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in people over 55 more than doubled in the U.S. between 2012 and 2022. In those ten years, rates of syphilis among seniors increased seven-fold. Factors driving up rates of STDs include longer life spans and a lack of sex education among older adults.

Colorectal Cancer Increases Among Younger Adults (San Diego, CA) -- Doctors say colorectal cancer is steadily rising among younger adults across the country. The American Cancer Society says diagnoses are up roughly 25% since 1995, for people younger than 55. Oncologist Dr. Darren Sigal of the Scripps Clinic says it’s important to pay attention to symptoms. Colorectal cancer is now the number one cause of cancer-related death for men under 50 and the number two cause for women. Just 20 years ago, it was the number four cause of death for both age groups. Symptoms include a change in bowel habits, blood in stool, belly pain that doesn’t go away, and unintentional weight loss.

Five More Measles Cases Confirmed In Chicago (Chicago, IL) -- Chicago’s measles outbreak is getting worse. Health officials have confirmed five more cases in the city, bringing the total number of measles cases to 31. That accounts for all cases in the state of Illinois and the most measles cases in the last 15 years. Children under four-years-old account for 21 of the 31 confirmed cases and the majority are in the Pilsen migrant shelter.

Research Reveals Most Americans Support Marijuana Legalization (Washington, D.C.) -- Most Americans now believe marijuana should be legal. While nearly six out of ten believe it should be legal for both uses, around three out of ten think it should only be legal for medical purposes. About ten-percent believe it should be outlawed. The survey also revealed that more Americans disagree over the effects of legalizing the drug, with only half believing legalization has a positive economic impact.
