GRMC Receives Multiple 2026 Women’s Choice Awards, Named One of Best Hospitals in America Darren Dunn
(Seguin) — GRMC is once again being recognized as a top choice in several healthcare categories. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has received 2026 Women’s Choice Awards for Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Patient Experience, and Patient Safety. GRMC Vice President of Quality Rhonda Unruh says the awards reflect the hospital’s overall commitment to excellence in healthcare. “We’re very proud to have these awards from the Women’s Choice Awards. There’s plenty of research that shows that women are responsible for 90 percent of healthcare decisions made for their families. So seeing that we’ve been given these awards, in light of the fact that Women’s Choice Awards identifies the most relevant factors that are important to women when making healthcare decisions, it’s just very exciting that we’ve received this recognition,” said Unruh. Ag Commissioners Issues Warning About Mystery Seeds (Austin) -- Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) this week urged Texans to remain vigilant as unsolicited packages containing unidentified seeds continue to arrive at their doorsteps. Since February 2025, TDA has collected seed deliveries at 109 locations across the Lone Star State, totaling 1,101 packs of unsolicited seeds. While small in appearance, these packages represent a serious and ongoing threat to the nation’s agricultural biosecurity. “At a glance, this might seem like a small problem, but this is serious business,” said Commissioner Miller. “The possible introduction of an invasive species to the state via these seeds poses real risks to Texas families and the agriculture industry. We need everyone to
report these packages when they arrive so the contents may be gathered and disposed of properly.” TDA first became aware of the issue in early February when a resident in Clute received an unsolicited package sent from China, containing unidentified seeds and an unknown liquid. In response, TDA immediately warned Texans to exercise extreme caution if they receive packages of unknown origin. Since that report, it has been discovered that the mystery seed resurgence was not limited to Texas. Similar examples surfaced across the country in 2025, including reports from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The last unsolicited seed package collection in Texas was
GRMC, continued. Each award is based on unique criteria. Unruh says the Obstetrics Award focuses on the total experience for mothers at the hospital. “With the obstetrics award, they’re looking specifically at infection and complication rates, but related solely to delivering babies. They’re looking at low rates of early elective deliveries — so making sure that when we are delivering moms earlier than expected, it’s only for medical indications, which is a big safety issue in maternity. And then also looking again at patient experience — not only are patients saying, yes, our doctors communicated well, our nurses communicated well, our hospital was a clean and restful environment — but that they would actually recommend us to their friends and family, which is really the most important part of that experience,” said Unruh. The Orthopedics Award uses a similar methodology. She says the hospital again received high marks for its surgical care. “So also on orthopedics, again, looking at those rates of complications and infections, because anytime you come in for any type of surgery, you want to know that you’re not going to leave with problems that you didn’t already come in with. So just looking at that high-quality care, and again, looking at — do these patients recommend
conducted on December 29, 2025. These echo similar nationwide incidents first observed in 2020 and underscore the continued risk posed by unsolicited foreign seed shipments, including brushing scams. A brushing scam occurs when sellers send unsolicited, lowvalue items to random people, who then post fake verified reviews to boost online sales. Due to the risk of introducing an invasive species or other concerns, these mystery seeds could pose a significant threat to agriculture and agricultural producers. If you receive an unsolicited package, do not open its contents; instead, keep them sealed in their original packaging and contact the Texas Department of Agriculture immediately at 1-(800) TELLTDA for guidance and safe collection.
GRMC for orthopedic care,” said Unruh. Unruh says the Patient Safety Award looks at the hospital’s overall rate of complications. She says low rates of complications and infections help produce better outcomes for patients. “The Patient Safety Award is recognizing hospitals that have good outcomes for their patients. So the practices that we put in place — evidence-based practices that we use to take care of patients — help us to provide excellent outcomes. For this award, it’s looking at whether we have low rates of infection and low rates of complications. So when patients come to us for surgical care, are they experiencing complications or things that worsen while they’re here? Or if they’re here for medical care, are they experiencing complications,” said Unruh. The Patient Experience Award takes a broader look at hospital data. Unruh says GRMC once again scored high in this category. “The Patient Experience Award looks at all of our patient survey data from both inpatient and outpatient services. It looks at all of the different measures patients are surveyed on, including communication with nurses and doctors, how responsive we are when a patient needs help, explaining medications, providing discharge instructions, and the restfulness of the environment. GRMC, continued. Then again, it looks at that recommendation — when patients come to us for inpatient or outpatient care, do they have an experience that would make them want to recommend us to their friends and family,” said Unruh. Unruh says GRMC strives to provide quality care for all patients. She says the entire team is proud to again be recognized with these prestigious awards. “Each of these awards has a methodology that looks at publicly reported data on not only our clinical performance, but also our patient experience. The dedication of our staff and medical staff really shines in these metrics. We’re very thankful to have such a committed team and to receive these awards,” said Unruh. While staff members are grateful for the recognition, Unruh says the community should also feel proud knowing

quality care is available locally. “I hope the takeaway for our patients is that GRMC is a place you can trust. It’s a safe place for your healthcare needs. We recognize that when patients seek healthcare, it’s one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. Knowing that you have a healthcare home in Seguin that provides not only quality outcomes, but an excellent experience as well, is really meaningful for the community,” said Unruh. The Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospitals is considered a trusted referral source and a prestigious credential identifying the nation’s top hospitals based on rigorous criteria, including clinical performance, patient satisfaction, and relevant accreditations. GRMC is now part of a select group of hospitals to receive these honors. Hospitals earning these designations demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering exceptional care and prioritizing the health and well-being of their patients.

Ablin
Judith Carolyn “Judy” Ablin, of Seguin, Texas, was peacefully called home on December 28, 2025, as her daughter held her hand. She was lovingly cared for by family in the days leading up to her homegoing. Judy was born on March 5, 1939, in Willmar, Minnesota, to David and Sara Nordholm. She was raised in the small town of Elbow Lake, Minnesota, where she enjoyed an idyllic childhood, enriched by a close extended family and a tight-knit community. As the eldest of three daughters, she set an early example of love, compassion, and care for others that she carried throughout her life. Judy graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1957 and went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she majored in nursing. It was there, in the late 1950s, that she met her future husband, Ralph Ablin. Their relationship began with a Sadie Hawkins dance—true to Judy’s confident and warm spirit, she was the one who asked Ralph out—and marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership grounded in faith and shared purpose. They were married in 1961. Judy and Ralph built a life together centered on family and ministry. Ralph, an ordained pastor, and Judy served side by side through decades of ministry, opening their home and their lives to others wherever they were called. Judy also had a strong passion for health and nutrition and genuinely enjoyed learning about wellness and sharing that knowledge with others, always wanting to help

people care well for themselves and those they loved. In 1987, Judy and Ralph endured the heartbreaking loss of their youngest son, Christopher, at the age of six and a half. In later years, following Ralph’s severe and debilitating stroke in 2004, Judy devoted herself fully to his care, walking faithfully beside him with patience, strength, and unwavering love until his passing in 2012. Her service extended far beyond her own family. Over the years, Judy volunteered as a hospital chaplain, served with Meals on Wheels, and was actively involved in various women’s ministries. She was drawn to those in need of comfort and hope, offering prayer freely, listening deeply, and caring wholeheartedly. Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Ablin; her son, Christopher Ablin (1980–1987); her daughter-in-law, Jana Ablin; and her parents, David and Sara Nordholm. She is survived by her children Charles Ablin of Normandy Park, Washington; David Ablin and his wife, Gaby, of Seguin, Texas; and Heather Engler and her husband, Chet, of New Braunfels, Texas; her sisters Sara Brown and Victoria Lofgren; and her ten grandchildren: Justin, Daniela, Alex, Brianna, Ceanna, Christopher, Josh, and Serena Ablin, and Jake and Sam Engler. Judy’s life reflected a deep love for the Lord and a sincere love for people. She spoke openly about her faith, offered prayer freely, and cared deeply for those around her. Her compassion, her voice, and her unwavering belief will continue to echo in the lives of those she loved. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Lifegate Church in Seguin, Texas.

CDC Overhauls Childhood Vaccine Schedule (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is announcing an overhaul of the childhood vaccine schedule. The updated schedule is expected to resemble Denmark’s which recommends all children get vaccines for eleven diseases rather than 18. Parents who want their children to receive all of the vaccines previously recommended will still be able to do so and insurance will cover the shots. A website launched for the settlement says the antitrust class action lawsuit was brought against several beef processors including Tyson Foods, Cargill, National Beef and JBS by a group of consmuers. The companies are accused of entering into “a market allocation agreement” allowing them to stop competing for market share. The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota said the agreement served as a way to increase margins and prices paid by consumers. While the companies have not admitted wrongdoing Tyson Foods and Cargill have agreed to settlements of 55 million dollars and 32-point-five million dollars.
