The Sedbergh School ASSOCIATION

We would like to welcome you to the newly formed Sedbergh School Association.
As the world becomes more polarised, and communities more fractured, people are increasingly looking for a place to belong, where people live by common implicit values.
I believe that such values are anchored in the Sedbergh School Association.
The Sedbergh School Association is Sedbergh – in and beyond our beautiful location, embraced by Cautley, Calf and Winder. It is more than a local organisation. It is the worldwide community of all who have journeyed through Sedbergh as pupils, parents, staff or friends.
The Association helps maintain and strengthen our connections, both with those currently at Sedbergh, and the thousands who now live and work across the world.
Your connection with us is valued. We open our doors to welcome you.
Yours sincerely,
Dan Harrison
Dan Harrison | HEADMASTER OF SEDBERGH SCHOOL
Over the many centuries of the School’s existence, the alumni have celebrated their heritage and rejoiced in their lifelong bonds of friendship. But such a legacy is not the exclusive preserve of Old Boys and Girls. Increasingly, and in modern times, others have indicated that they hold Sedbergh high in their affections, and likewise want to celebrate their connection with this historic School and its surrounding community. Many feel that they are just as equally custodians of its ancient traditions and modern values as those that attended Sedbergh. We recognise this, and as an inclusive community we want to welcome all who, in one way or another, have been part of our journey as we approach the Quincentenary. Those being, from Sedbergh School, Casterton School and Sedbergh Preparatory School:
• Old Sedberghians and their partners, including Honorary OS
• Parents, guardians, grandparents and relatives
• Alumni of the former Casterton School
• Staff, including teaching and support
• Governors and other volunteers
• Friends
The Sedbergh School Association has four aims:
To celebrate the friendships found through Sedbergh.
To help younger generations as they make their way in the world.
To support the School.
To be a source of companionship, particularly to the elderly and infirm.
The Sedbergh School Association does not replace the OS Club. The OS Club will continue, as always, to celebrate the many friendships formed by people who attended the School. The Sedbergh School Association provides a forum for the wider Sedbergh community to celebrate all things Sedbergh. Alumni are members of both.
Our aim is simple; to provide an inclusive forum for those who value Sedbergh and wish to retain a meaningful relationship with it. Membership of the Association is free, although we may ask for a donation to help promote future activities of the Association.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Association.

Jan van der Velde DIRECTOR | DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
Sedbergh is a social place and whether you are an alumnus, a former School parent, member of staff, or simply someone who has enjoyed a relationship with the School, bonds of friendship with others in the community will have formed.
As an example, many parents want to keep in touch with the parents in their offspring’s year groups. They have seen their respective children grow up together. As parents they have witnessed the collective successes of their children on and off the sport fields, and they have celebrated a shared journey at an important stage in their lives.
Whatever your connection with the School, you are important to us. As valued members of our community we want you to continue to enjoy that sense of camaraderie that stems from a common interest in our ancient School.
We therefore facilitate the celebration of friendships through various events at Sedbergh or around the country. These can be small parental year group reunions, or larger functions to which all are welcome.

Members of our community come from all walks of life and from all parts of the globe. This broad reach, both in terms of experience and knowledge, adds to our ability to help the next generation in their career choice and finding their first professional role.
Many of our community are happy to assist from time to time with advice regarding career paths, often reflecting on their own life’s journey. Some will help with interview practice or give a Sedbergh alumni a personal introduction to their target firm.
Such assistance is an important aspect of our community. We all need help when we first start out in life, we all seek guidance to avoid making fruitless decisions, and sometimes we just need a friendly face in a foreign land. We welcome your help and embrace what you have to offer.
Sedbergh is built upon the generosity and goodwill of those in its community. Many of the capital projects within the School were funded by donations from people who understand and believe in what the School has to offer. This has greatly added to the splendour of the School and its educational vision.
Equally as important are the bursaries and scholarships offered by the School but funded by donations. Since the 1940s there have been over 1,500 scholars pass through the School. More recently, the Roger Lupton Scholarship Scheme, named after Sedbergh’s Founder, has provided fully funded places for children of outstanding talent from disadvantaged backgrounds. Such opportunities provide benefit both to the individual and wider society.
Funding aside, we rely on our community to spread the word about Sedbergh. Such advocates are an important part of how we communicate our values. The Spirit of Sedbergh, the essence of what engenders such loyalty to the School, is conveyed so effectively around the firesides and dining tables of people’s homes. These personal recommendations help future parents make an informed decision about Sedbergh.
