THE DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE

THE FOUNDING PRINCIPLE OF THE SCHOOL

In 1525 Roger Lupton founded Sedbergh School to provide an education for young people who might otherwise be unable to access the opportunities that such an education brings.

This intention still exists today. Since the Second World War over 1,500 young people have been granted scholarships and bursaries to attend Sedbergh, changing the course of individual lives and supporting some of the twentieth century’s pre-eminent thinkers.

The Roger Lupton Scholarship Scheme goes beyond those scholarships traditionally offered by Sedbergh.

Established in 2012, this scheme reaches out to find those highly talented young people who face real financial barriers to experiencing an education that truly does justice to their skills, talents and work ethic.

We believe that talent should always be given opportunity, no matter the background. This view is shared by many connected with Sedbergh. That’s why the scheme is 100% funded by members of the Sedbergh Community.

A Personal Message from The Headmaster, Mr Dan Harrison

I have been an educationalist at Sedbergh for 30 years and I have seen many talented individuals pass through the School in that time. All have benefitted from a Sedbergh education.

We are aware that there are talented young boys and girls who come from backgrounds where the opportunity to develop their skills to the maximum is beyond the family’s aspirational hopes.

This is a great loss for those young people and for the wider society, and many in the Sedbergh Community feel that where possible we should identify such individuals and do what we can to cultivate their considerable gifts, irrespective of their financial background.

The Roger Lupton Scholarship Scheme addresses this. Each scholar is carefully selected based on their personal attributes and background.

Scholarships are in most cases 100% funded. All funding comes through the generosity of those in the Sedbergh Community.

A Roger Lupton Scholarship is a sliding doors moment* for the fortunate few who are able to join us.

This is a personal call to action to help create more life changing opportunities.

03

IDENTIFYING & CHANNELLING NEED

Identifying talented individuals

• Pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are commonly nominated by adults with formal involvement in their lives such as teachers or youth workers.

• Such agencies could be local schools and community charities.

• All Roger Lupton Scholarships are means tested.

Channelling

• Sedbergh always gives back to its own communities and heartlands.

• We focus on finding future Roger Lupton Scholars in counties around Sedbergh, such as Cumbria, Durham, Southern Scotland, Great Manchester, Lancashire, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and Yorkshire.

• Local advocates in these communities are best placed to identify those individuals who will thrive at Sedbergh.

SCHOLARS’ EXPERIENCE OF THE SCHOOL

This year I’m head of four science societies: Burke and Hare, Chemical Curiosities, Invisible College, and Astronomical Society. Last year I had the opportunity to undertake an EPQ, a private research project, in genetic engineering. This process was really helpful as I discovered my interest in genetic engineering. It meant I narrowed down my career path and life plan and am now looking at Biomedical Science courses with modules about gene editing. This is a rapidly growing area of science and I’d love ultimately to do a PhD in this.

I enjoy the atmosphere at Sedbergh School and how it is inclusive for everyone. All parts of Sedbergh life are really amazing and have helped me develop as a person really. Sedbergh’s given me this opportunity to thrive and maybe, hopefully make my sporting aspirations come true.

Being a Sedberghian has taught me important core values and life skills that I will continue to utilise through life and has encouraged me to take all opportunities that come my way.

SLIDING DOORS MOMENTS

If I had not come to Sedbergh, I’d be in a completely different place. Sedbergh has given me an advantage of high-level training environments for my sporting endeavours – I’ve always been very passionate about sport but Sedbergh gave me the chance to explore this to a high level. From an academic point of view the structured, fast paced environment was really helpful in allowing me to thrive.

I think fundamentally I would not have had the chance to learn from the outstanding staff and make the lasting friends I did. I would not have had the same opportunities both musically and academically.

James Horan

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2012-17

I feel confident making more adventurous choices in life, that will lead to a more interesting future.

06

THE IMPACT EACH ROGER LUPTON SCHOLARSHIP HAS MADE

I notice that my work ethic and stress tolerance levels are greater than the average person. The ‘not giving up’, the ‘stoic and enduring attitude’ are qualities that always dig me out of uncomfortable situations. These are things that Sedbergh gave me.

Cameron Melville

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2013-20

I recall talking to a member of staff during lunch in Winder house in my final year at Sedbergh. He told me his best piece of advice was to always ‘be interesting and more importantly be interested’. At the time, I thought it was just a passing comment; however, over time I realised that it was an important message. It was these lessons on top of the formal education that stay with Sedberghians over time.

James Horan

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2012-17

Sedbergh kept me busy all of the time, from when you woke up to when you went to sleep. Whether it was lessons or sport, or prep in the evening, I’ve carried that structure into life after school. I make the most of every minute of the day. That’s what they do at Sedbergh. Make sure you don’t waste your time.

GRATITUDE

I’d love to thank my donor from the bottom of my heart. Being at Sedbergh has given me so many opportunities that I wouldn’t have experienced. I’d thank them immensely.

Mo Bashir

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2017-21

We’re so pleased for him. He’s thriving. We wanted him to be featured in the Roger Lupton Scholarship material for donors as we’d like to do everything we can to help another child have the opportunity he’s had at Sedbergh.

I am so very appreciative  of the possibilities that Sedbergh School has given to my sons.

Most of all I’d love to say thank you to the people who funded my scholarship. They clearly don’t do it for praise, but I am grateful to have been backed; which boils down to being believed in and recognised. It would be nice to grab a drink and have a big chat.

THE PERPETUITY CONCEPT

Many scholars feel motivated to give others the chance that they themselves had to reach their full potential. This cycle compounds social mobility creating many recipients from your initial gift. In other words, your gift will go on giving to provide opportunities to future generations.

I would love to be fortunate enough to create a similar opportunity for another scholar. Talent should be recognised and rewarded, and not just to those born wealthy.

Cameron Melville

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2013-20

If I had the chance to thank my donor I would say that their generosity is truly appreciated. Without this life changing opportunity I wouldn’t be working in the role I am now. A donor’s gift doesn’t end when someone leaves the school but helps the scholar throughout their life.

James Horan

Former Roger Lupton Scholar, 2012-17

I’d love to create a scholarship when I’m older, 100%. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be here at this school and I’d definitely like to help people be here if they want to be.

THE DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE

I know the pupils in this booklet – those here now and those who have passed through the School and are making their way in the world. They are the sort of young people that our country – and the world – needs to have in positions of influence and responsibility. Looking beyond their own narrow concerns, aware of the positive impact that they can have on others, desiring to give of themselves.

The Roger Lupton Scholarships not only draw from the founding principles of this School, they also directly contribute to the common good.

I am so pleased that the School has chosen to focus on the Scholarships as it celebrates 500 years – I cannot imagine a more fitting celebration, and legacy, as we look to the future, inspired by our past.

The Revd Paul Sweeting | CHAPLAIN

Roger Lupton Scholarships are not just about the individual, they are about what the individual can contribute to society as a result. This scheme, and the generosity of people who support it, gives people like me the opportunity to discover and grow their talents, and bring them to the wider world.

Roger Lupton Scholar, 2013-17

I strongly want to contribute to future scholarships. I would say every Roger Lupton Scholar who had the opportunity to attend Sedbergh feels the same way.

Sedbergh is genuinely unique in the opportunities it provides pupils to give back through charity work. The majority of Sedberghians have a strong sense of appreciation for their opportunity and give back to charities or organisations who have in some way influenced or shaped their lives.

DONOR REFLECTIONS

In honour of my late husband

Sedbergh played a formative role in my late husband’s early life. I am pleased to be able to offer support in his memory so that a young person can benefit from a similar opportunity.

I want to give others the same opportunity

I was fortunate enough to go to Sedbergh School and found it a wonderful place.

I now have the means to help others and I want to do so.

I hope to give young people the same opportunities that I had in life myself. The pupils who come out of Sedbergh do so with many fine qualities, such as a strong set of values in life, a strong moral code, and a strong work ethic, all of which is imbued in them during their time at Sedbergh.

To the scholar I would say, you have been given the greatest of opportunities, now make the most of it.

I can’t think of a greater gift

I am just happy that I can help someone else have this opportunity. I know they will benefit from their time at Sedbergh. Sedbergh does things right and the young people who go through the School come out with a strong set of values, and sense of purpose. I can’t think of a greater gift.

12

CONTRIBUTING

It costs £40,000 per annum for a child to enter the RLS programme. There are a number of ways you can help to sponsor a child on a Roger Lupton Scholarship.

1

Monthly Donation

Many people make a regular monthly donation of, say, £100. With gift aid this rises to £125 and therefore we only need 26 people to make such a monthly contribution to fund a place. Even a monthly gift of £25 over five years can make a material difference to a child’s future.

2

Syndicate Giving

Some people would like to have the benefit of knowing who they are sponsoring and where possible receive reports on their progress1. While normally this is only possible where someone is the major sponsor for the child, we can extend this feedback to those who give as a syndicate.

Syndicate giving is where a family, or friends (say from a House year group) or a former group of parents collectively sponsor a pupil.

3

Major Sponsor

A major sponsor is someone who sponsors 50% or more of a pupil’s costs. In other words, if the gift is eligible for gift aid, then £16,000 or more, or £20,000 or more if not eligible for gift aid. As with syndicate giving, where possible the sponsor will be matched with a Scholar and be kept informed as to their progress1

4

Legacy

In addition to making a lifetime gift or as an alternative, you can join the 1525 Society and leave a gift in your Will. The 1525 Society is the Foundation’s legacy society and is a good way of staying connected with Sedbergh as many events are held to celebrate this legacy society.

Sedbergh offers a confidential ‘free will’ service to facilitate leaving a legacy.

1 While we endeavour to keep Syndicate and Major Sponsors updated as to the progress of the Scholar, we must respect the wishes of the pupil and ensure the interests of the child comes first.

FREE WILL SERVICE

In association with www.squiggleconsult.co.uk

For many Sedberghians the reassurance of having financial affairs in order can be a great comfort. To assist those wishing to write or amend their Will the Foundation is delighted to work with the dedicated Will writing service Squiggle. Jan van der Velde, Director of Alumni Development has worked with Squiggle Estate Planning Consultant, Maria Greenwood, for 25 years and highly recommends her work.

Through the partnership with Sedbergh School Foundation, Squiggle offers both a free dedicated Will writing service, and access to their wider paid-for estate planning services. There is no obligation to take up additional services or leave a legacy to Sedbergh School. The Will writing service can be delivered over the telephone and via video calls. Alternatively, face-to-face appointments can be arranged for members of the Sedbergh community in the South-East of England.

Squiggle will guide you through the process of writing a Will, cutting through the legal jargon and making it a straightforward process. Squiggle are also happy to review existing Wills for free to ensure that they are up to date with your needs. All Wills created through this scheme are logged with the ‘National Wills Register’ meaning that the Wills are transparent and accessible when the time comes. Sedberghians using this service will receive a copy of the Will for their own records.

If you’d like to learn more about the free Will writing service, please contact Maria Greenwood of Squiggle: maria.greenwood@squiggleconsult.co.uk | 01732 927401
