HELP LUPTON HOUSE RAISE £25,000 One of the greatest lessons we have learned over recent months is the value of outside space for our personal well-being.

When we are enclosed and restricted, we suffer.

All Sedberghians have the great privilege of our incomparable location in the Yorkshire Dales. Every turn is a vast open space in which our pupils thrive and flourish.

Since Lupton House was purchased by the School in the 1880s, when central Sedbergh outdoor space was primarily used for household activities such as laundry or pig-keeping, the House has had no garden space of its own beyond a small front stepped area which offers no privacy from the road.

The same should be true for our boarding houses and for the majority of our pupils, the boarding experience includes private outside space in which they are able to truly feel they are “at home”.

Lupton House does not have this outdoor garden space.

The walled ‘Yard’ opposite the House is not at all fit for this purpose and is used by other School activities outside of lesson time.

Our plans are to extend the patio beyond the Yard up to create an enclosed recreational area, with space for seating, entertaining and planted areas which will offer a private outdoor space in which Luptonians can relax and socialise.

IN MEMORY OF JOELLE - A SPACE FOR ALL A significant part of our plans include to recognise the memory of Old Sedberghian Joelle Welsh, who sadly passed away last Summer. Joelle is remembered in House for her kindness, compassion and her brilliant sense of humour which brought happiness to her housemates and the wider school community. A true Luptonian, she would be thrilled to see her House have its own outdoor space for her fellow pupils and generations to come.

Luptonians, family and friends of Joelle have joined the School to raise an incredible £12,000 towards this project.

Today we ask you to join us in matching this growing sum to raise £25,000 towards the creation of the Lupton Terrace in recognition of Joelle, her time at Sedbergh, and for the future benefit of Lupton House pupils.

Shaded in the plan above, the new terrace will include seating for 80 in a communal space, with planted areas, a memorial archway, a small area for outdoor cooking, and space for the girls to study, socialise and relax in the open air, close to their House.
