Interfaith Habitat Build

Habitat for Humanity Mission & Vision

We have an opportunity as a congregation, together with approximately 200 people from other faith communities throughout our city (Jewish, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Protestant), to live out in its most literal form: A Time to Rebuild!

These faith communities are working with Habitat for Humanity, Greater Indianapolis, to fundraise and build all the interior and exterior wall panels for two homes for selected families—in one morning! As Habitat’s website states, their interfaith builds are held to “embody the power of unity in diversity with the hope of further enriching our neighborhoods.”

A “panel build” is a sponsored event where Habitat for Humanity brings the construction site to Second. Habitat supplies the building materials, tools, safety equipment, and professional supervision. Our faith communities provide the space and volunteers. The Habitat homeowner-in-training will participate in the panel build, working alongside the volunteers who can witness firsthand the impact of the build on the homeowner and the community.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are asking for volunteers to build, greet, provide hospitality, and volunteer with new friends from other faith groups as we respond to housing instability issues within our community. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and no construction skills are needed to participate! The Habitat construction team will instruct and supervise – and make sure everyone is having fun!

Meet members of the Habitat “Tiger Team,” participate in a safety briefing, work one of two morning shifts, volunteer alongside our interfaith neighbors, and enjoy a box lunch! A panel build promotes team building and volunteerism for all involved and also provides a great cost savings for Habitat. As the Greater Indianapolis Habitat website states, “by the end of your volunteer experience, we hope you leave tired and inspired.”
