Welcome...

to the December issue of Seaford Scene. What an unimaginable year we have had! Who would have thought this time last year, that we would all be facing a global pandemic, that our lives would be threatened and normal life as we know it would be different in so many ways? The idea of a three-month lockdown, followed by huge restrictions, felt like a heavy burden to bear, but here we are in December, and there is the promise of several vaccines on the horizon – fingers crossed! It’s been a hugely challenging and still is, a very difficult time for so many people, and it’s clear that over the last eight months, Seaford has come together as one amazing community, supporting each other in so many different ways – thank you to everyone who has reached out with kindness to help all of those in need. Please do continue to support and use your local shops and businesses, as they still need your help. I hope you enjoy this December issue and I will look forward to catching up with you again next year. In the meantime, although this Christmas may be a different one, I hope you can enjoy the festive time as well as can be expected and, if we are unable to meet up with family, friends or neighbours, a virtual/online Christmas catch up, or a long phone call filled with love and laughter, will mean the world. Sending seasons greetings and best wishes to you all and let’s look forward to a bright and safe 2021 for everyone. Thank you for your continuing support. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Fran Tegg. Editor

Seaford Rotary

Santa’s Sleigh

Seaford Rotary is hoping to be able to accompany Father Christmas around the streets of Seaford to bring some Christmas cheer in the weeks before Christmas, as we have done for over 60 years. Due however to the Government’s decision in early November to impose a national Lockdown until 2nd December, and the possibility of further restrictions in December, it is not possible to let you know which routes Father Christmas will take, if and when he is able to visit Seaford this December. If Government restrictions are lifted such that it is considered safe to take Father Christmas on his sleigh around the town, Seaford Rotary will only do so with additional controls in place to maintain the necessary social distancing and to protect Father Christmas and all who may wish to see him. The sleigh will have protective screen sides to prevent any direct contact with Father Christmas and keep him socially distanced from those wishing to see him. There will also be no door to door collection by Rotarians or distribution of sweets. The Rotarians accompanying the sleigh will be wearing face coverings and will ensure that those who wish to speak to Father Christmas maintain social distances around the sleigh. Please look out for news and updates on the Seaford Rotary website www. seafordrotary.org.uk, Facebook, Seahaven FM and Haven News.

A Socially Distanced Handover of Bishopstone Station Planters The formal handover of two planters at Bishopstone Station to the ‘Friends of Bishopstone Station’ occurred on 30th October, when President Martin McGill presented the planters to their Chair Barbara Mine. The planters had been filled with suitable plants donated by Paradise Park. Watering and maintenance,

4

including pruning of the ivy will be by the ‘Friends of Bishopstone Station’. Paradise Park has agreed to provide new plants in the spring next year. Early in 2020, Seaford Rotary received a request from the ‘Friends of Bishopstone Station’ for a donation to assist with the purchase of two new planters for the station platform. It was intended that these two planters would be the same as those at Seaford Station provided by Seaford Martello Rotary. In March however, due to the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, the project to supply the planters was put on hold. It was not until the relaxation of the pandemic rules in the summer months that an order for the planters could be actioned. Commenting on the handover, President Martin McGill said that it was good to be able hand over these planters to the community, as due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, it was only the second time that he had been able to carry out his formal duties since becoming President in July.

Wreath Laying at the War Memorial This year, due to the social distance restrictions, the annual remembrance laying of wreaths at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday was not able to take place. The Town Council asked that those organisations who would normally partake in the commemoration by laying a wreath at the war memorial did so individually in the week before Remembrance Sunday. Thus, on 4th November, in remembrance of those who gave up their lives for their country, President Martin McGill laid a wreath on the memorial on behalf of Seaford Rotary. Seaford Youth Forum

Use it or lose it

The Youth Forum is linking with our four Primary Schools to launch a ‘Use it or Lose it’ campaign/ competition to support our local shops and businesses. Although it’s affected by the November lockdown, it will run to the end of the school year in July, so a delayed start is not a problem. The concept is as follows: l

Participating shops pay £10 Every family in a school, and every staff member, is given a card with the school’s name on it l Family = child, parent/guardian, grandparent l If the shop is showing a participating sticker the card can be presented when a purchase is made and a tally will be kept. l 100 shops = £1,000, so a trophy for the winning school plus £250 per school. l

So far all schools and shops contacted have opted in. For further information please email Roger Daw at: rogerashleydaw@gmail.com.

Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team moving forward

Phone line hours: Mon to Fri: 9am – 12 noon. Tel: 01323 364058 During September and October we saw a big drop in calls to our help line, often only one a day, hence we have reduced our hours. IF during this new lockdown we see we have missed many calls and people have been unable to call back when we are available we will act accordingly and make further changes. Information about these will be added to the message on our answerphone and we will publicise these on our Facebook Group, website and via other local media. We have been so pleased that many have been able to use the advice we have given about local deliveries. We have also helped some people to change pharmacy to local businesses which are able to deliver prescriptions to elderly and vulnerable residents. Because of this people have regained their independence and found new ways of getting the things they need. This is a good thing for them and hopefully will mean we do not see a large increase in the need for our help. Many of our original volunteers have now gone back to work and college/university but we are still here for you if you need our help for essential shopping, prescriptions etc. We will also try to respond to anyone who suddenly has to go into isolation, or falls ill, until you can get organised. As soon as Lockdown#2 was announced many local cafés responded to the need and announced they would restart takeaways and home deliveries. Many residents are really pleased to be able to get a prebooked Sunday lunch this way. As I write we know that The Front Room, Marion’s café (next to Be Creative) and the Seven Sisters Pub are doing this. We are sure there will be others too. Remember also that you can ring up and get deliveries from Burts Bakery 01323 894318, Scoop and Weigh 01323 899047, Walbrins Butchers and Gabriella’s Greengrocers 01323 892781 to support our local businesses. Finally, the Morrisons Doorstep Delivery Scheme means you can ring 0345 611 6111, wait for offer of Option 5 and order anything you want (except ice cream!) for

6

next day delivery. The service remains free to those who are vulnerable or elderly. To help them in the store please be as specific as possible about what you want. Alternatively if you are able to order your shopping online, the supermarkets seem to have increased the number of delivery slots available. Remember you can also contact us on our website https://svet.proffer.org.uk and fill in the Request form for support. Please note these online requests will only be dealt with during our 9-12 noon operating hours. Thank you to everyone who has pulled together to make this possible. We hope you will all have a peaceful Christmas. If we cannot help you or are not available, we know some people who can so here are some useful numbers to CUT OUT AND KEEP. Seaford Photographic Society We have taken the reluctant decision not to hold our annual exhibition this year. This is particularly disappointing as last year’s was such a success at the new venue. With the current Covid-19 situation currently worsening, our prime concern has to be for the safety of our members and the public, and we felt that we couldn’t guarantee this. Since I started writing this the new Lockdown#2 rules have come into force so it wouldn’t have been possible anyway. We hope to be back to normal next year and, in the meantime, you can see a selection of our best work in the members’ galleries and competition winners on the website www.seafordps.org. The first two set-subject competitions of the season were ‘Creative’ and ‘Home and Garden’ judged by Steven Galvin LRPS. The Home and Garden competition inevitably featured lots photos of members’ beautiful gardens but the winning image, ‘Vinyl Rules’ (photo left) by Chris Dawson, was taken indoors. The judge commented that this was a ‘marmite’ image, that people would either love or hate, but he loved it. ‘Shower Time’ by Simon Rigby took second place, Sylvia Carter’s photo of flowers from her garden was third. The Creative competition certainly lived up to its name and the winner’s trophy went to ‘Practice Your Scales They Said!’ (photo below) by Colin Mitchell. In second place was ‘Guitar Music’ (photo top) by Heather Roberts, and third place went to Janice Hewitt. We were pleased to welcome two new members to our next meeting, which featured a lecture by acclaimed Street Photographer Ian Boulton. We enjoyed Ian’s photos, taken mainly on the streets of Bath and Bristol, and particularly the stories that went

8

with them, and how he had got to know many of the local characters. The third round of the PDI League competition for Projected Digital Images was judged by awardwinning Uckfield-based professional photographer Judith Stewart (www.judithstewartphotography. co.uk), and we had a record 72 entries, with 26 people attending the Zoom meeting. A particular ‘well done’ to Anna-Marie Armstrong (photo right) and Colin Mitchell (photo below), both of whom managed to get the maximum score of 20/20 for two of their images. ‘Evening Rest’ (photo below) by Jack Taylor and ‘Little Egret’ by Simon Watkins also did particularly well. Anna-Marie and Colin are currently in the lead in the Standard and Advanced groups respectively, with just one round of the league competition to go. We were pleased to welcome another new member to the club for the final Zoom meeting of the month and again we had a record number of people attending. ‘Seeing Opportunity’ was a wide-ranging and fascinating lecture by Erica Oram CPAGB AFIAP BPE3* about how to spot more interesting photo opportunities wherever you are, and she included lots of helpful technical details. Her approach is to take a quick photo when she arrives somewhere, which is usually the one that everybody takes, then spend some time looking around for interesting angles, details, patterns, lines, shapes etc. She also showed us some of her street photography, which is all about capturing a moment in time.

newhaven, peacehaven and seaford lions club This has certainly been one of the most challenging years for us all and we hope that everyone is staying safe and well. We, as a Lions Club, have certainly missed seeing everyone at the various events that would have taken place had the coronavirus not happened. Let us hope that 2021 will be a more positive year for us all. Although many of our events have not taken place, we have still been busy and will continue to help our communities in whatever way we can. Below are just a few of the things we are involved with:

Project Wenceslas – Winter Fuel Donations

Do you actually NEED your winter fuel payment this year? We know of many people who will not be able to keep warm this winter, as a result of the circumstances they find themselves in. If you are in a position to do so and would like to donate your winter fuel payment to us it would be very much appreciated. We will ensure that, by working with the various agencies within our District, it goes to those most in need. You can donate now at www.justgiving.com/newhaven-peacehavenseaford-lionsclub or cheques can be made payable to ‘NPS Lions Wenceslas Project’ and sent to: Lion Treasurer, 32 St Mellion Close, Hailsham, BN27 3UY.

Message in a Bottle Scheme (MIAB)

The Lions, Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location – the fridge. The bottle is kept in the fridge, where the emergency services will be able to find it in the event of being called to your home.

Spectacle Glasses Collection

If you have been having a sort out during the lockdown periods and have come across old spectacles that you do not know what to do with we have collection points at the following opticians: Redgold Opticians,

Specsavers and Sussex Eyecare in Seaford, Scrivens in Peacehaven and Ingram and Schofield Opticians in Peacehaven.

Seaford Monthly Beach Clean

Our members and Friends of Lions continue to do their bit at the monthly Seaford Beach Clean. It is held on the first Sunday of every month throughout the year starting at 10am at locations along Seaford beach. Keep an eye on our Facebook page @NPSLIONS for more detailed information.

Book Sale

We held a successful Book Sale at Paradise Park in Newhaven on Sunday 11th October 2020. The weather stayed dry for us although it got a bit chilly towards the end of the day. A big thank you to all those of you who purchased books throughout the day, to Paradise Park for letting us hold it there and Members and Friends of Lions for helping man the stand throughout the day. All the money raised at these events goes back into supporting communities within the three towns.

New Members and Volunteers

We are always on the look out for new members so if you have a few hours to spare and enjoy helping others we would love to hear from you. We welcome help with community service, social transport, half marathon, Santa’s Sleigh runs and fundraising. All of this goes towards supporting the local communities in Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford. You will receive a very warm welcome – we don’t bite! You can contact us by various means: Website:www.npslion.co.uk Email:lionpresident@npslions.co.uk Tel: 0345 833 5981 Facebook: @NPSLions Post: The President, NPS Lions Club, 27a Capel Avenue, Peacehaven, BN10 8NB. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the last year and wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Christmas and New Year.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

SEAFORD MAYOR’S AWARD 2019/2020 Last Autumn, Seaford’s Mayor, Cllr Nazish Adil, was looking for a worthy recipient for the Mayor’s Award for Unsung Hero. That honour was given to Cedric Trenfield, who has recently been handed the award in recognition of his work at Blatchington Pond over many years. Blatchington Pond has been around for centuries and started life as a dewpond to refresh livestock being taken down Sutton Drove. It has had other uses since then, but as the town grew and land use changed, it fell into disrepair and became something of an eyesore. In the late 1970s interest in the pond grew when East Blatchington was designated a Conservation Area. The Council owned the pond but could not afford its upkeep. A group of local folk decided to do something about it and formed the East Blatchington Pond Conservation Society. They raised enough money to begin the huge task of restoration in 1980. Cedric was involved in this work from the very beginning, and eventually became the Society’s Pond Manager, a post he holds to this day. His tireless efforts, coupled with his skill and ingenuity, have helped maintain the pond as a valuable asset for the people of Seaford. As well as carrying out general maintenance, Cedric has had to deal with such issues as fixing a leak and removing prodigious quantities of silt, the latter

using a home-made contraption! He also acquired a boat for use in accessing the island and deeper parts of the pond, and arranged the building of a boathouse and toolshed. In more recent years a small group of volunteers have met each Saturday morning to give Cedric some much needed help. Together they maintain the pond and carry out other activities such as rubbish clearance, silt removal, bulb planting, and tree and shrub management. Seaford Town Council takes responsibility for grass cutting and major tree work, which the team greatly appreciates. A number of benches and trees have been placed near the pond for people to enjoy. Some are dedicated in memory of folk who spent time enjoying the pond and its surroundings. At 86, Cedric is no longer able to don waders and start digging out silt, but he still keeps a supervisory eye on proceedings! Cedric’s work is largely behind the scenes, but there is no doubt that the pond would not be the delightful amenity it is today without Cedric’s tireless involvement. It is in recognition of those years of quiet dedication that he has received the Mayor’s Award. Well done, Cedric, and thank you for all you have done to enhance this beautiful and historic part of our landscape! Seven Sail to Disaster Seaford is a quiet, calm place, but sometimes nature casts a shadow over the town. Two of the blackest days in Seaford’s maritime history were 6th and 7th December 1809, the year after the Martello Tower was completed, when seven ships were wrecked with the loss of many lives. As Britain was at war with Napoleon, a convoy of 23 ships was being escorted eastwards up the Channel by the sloop Harlequin armed with 18 guns. In the fierce gale – ‘hard enough to blow off the devil’s head’ - the sloop mistook her position and led the six foremost vessels aground in Seaford Bay. Her firing of signal guns and rockets saved the rest of the convoy from a similar fate. The vessels lost with the Harlequin were: The Traveller (cargo of fruit) nine crew, The Albion (brandy, nuts and fruit) ten crew, The Weymouth (tobacco, barilla and cork) 12 crew, The Unice (cotton, potash and pearlash and staves) 11 crew, The Februar (a Prussian ship in ballast) 17 crew, The Midebach, also Prussian (wine, brandy, sugar and coffee)13 crew. A chaotic sight greeted the dawn on 7th December. The storm had hurled the vessels against each other with little remaining for the survivors to cling onto. The Sussex Weekly Advertiser reported that the spectacle ‘was truly dreadful, the seven ships being high together and complete wrecks, with the remaining crews clinging to differing parts of them, imploring for assistance which is natural in such cases’. Among those who risked their lives to help were officers and men from the Army barracks at Blatchington. Many heroic deeds were done, including the astonishing bravery of Lieutenant Bartholomew Derenzy who saw a sailor being rolled about in the surf – fighting for his life. ‘I’ll save that poor fellow or perish in the attempt!’ shouted Derenzy and dashed into the waves. He swam out and managed to get a good grip on the sailor but began to tire himself. His fellow officer,

16

Lieutenant Pringle also leapt into the water with the intention of saving both men. All three were now overwhelmed by the sea and all in danger of drowning. Soldiers and townsfolk linked hands and arms to form a human chain and dragged them safely onto the beach. Derenzy was a valiant soldier who had already been wounded twice fighting Napoleon in Spain and Holland. After the dramatic rescue at Seaford he returned to Iberia the following year and served under Sir Arthur Wellesley. Although wounded several times more, Derenzy survived the Napoleonic wars and eventually retired to Cheltenham as Major-General. Regrettably, there were also those who took advantage of the confusion to steal what they could find. Mr Harrison, collector of customs at Newhaven, lost the greatcoat and boots he laid on the beach before dashing into the waves. It seems that fourteen men from The Februar, plus everyone from The Midebach were lost. Apparently they were buried in a grave in Seaford Parish Churchyard, but all traces disappeared after alterations were made to the Churchyard. Hopefully, Seaford Museum will be open each weekend in December as well as Boxing Day, and Monday 28th December, plus New Years Day from 11am to 4pm. Children need more physical activities – Join St John’s Heroes for Positive Outcomes St John’s School in Seaford is a place where children and young people with complex learning difficulties receive a specialist education which helps them to thrive and achieve exceptional outcomes. St John’s focuses on communication, wellbeing, skills, independence and employability, and our approach is to provide tailored education, built around the needs of each young person. Leo’s mum Lucinda told us, ‘St John’s has changed Leo’s life. He’s gone from the worst he’s ever been to the best he’s ever been since joining St John’s and he just keeps on flourishing, going from strength to strength due to the specialist support from the team who work with him. In fact, he’s so happy he has worn a Mr Happy t-shirt every single day for the last year!’ Like for most charities and the community in general 2020 has been a difficult year for St John’s, but we are working hard to ensure that the young people at our school in Seaford and our college in Brighton are given a safe environment in which to learn, play and develop. Play is especially important for children with special needs and forms an essential part of the learning environment at St John’s School. No two children are the same in any walk of life, and children with Special Educational Needs face an entire range of different and specific challenges. Unfortunately, its a common theme that many children with SEN do not get the opportunity to play outside anywhere near as much as they should. Having space to play outside stimulates and encourages children with sensory sensitivities to explore all of their senses. Good play areas develop both gross and fine motor skills. They help children to improve mobility and coordination, the vestibular

system (balance) and proprioception (body awareness and spatial skills). Vestibular and proprioceptive training can be stressful for children who face difficulties with balance, and awareness of body and space. Offering them a safe environment to climb, balance, move over different levels and surfaces in a fun and playful way, with friends, improves their development without it feeling like a chore. St John’s is launching a campaign (St John’s Community Heroes) asking local businesses to raise £5,000 to help us purchase special indoor and outdoor play equipment suitable for the children and young people at the school. We are hoping to provide a large wooden pirate ship with climbing, swings and slides for outside play, and a new trampoline and trapeze for indoors. St John’s Community Heroes will encourage businesses to adopt St John’s as a charity that they will support on a regular basis, and all the funds raised will go directly to the purchase of play equipment for the school in Seaford. Our very first sponsors include Newton Waterproofing and La Maison Mobile BBQ Catering Service. If you or anyone you know might be interested in supporting the children at St John’s, we are organising a Facebook quiz on 4th December where you can find out more about St John’s Community Heroes and also compete to be the brainiest business in the Seaford. Why not get involved? Contact us on 07912 296407. Photo: Leo and Lucinda.

Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers Presents

Seaford Star Gazing

In association with Seaford Town Council This December Sussex Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers (SCIP), in association with Seaford Town Council, will be bringing starlight to the streets of Seaford town in a beautiful exhibition of stars, each designed and created by some of the best local illustrators and artists. These incredible one- off star creations will be exhibited in shop windows throughout Seaford town.

winning artists such as Graham Carter, Jane Robbins, Sally Elford, Onneke and Patrick Edgeley. A map of the Star Gazing trail will be available on www.wearescip. co.uk and the Seaford Town Council website. Alongside the trail SCIP are providing #MySCIPart online tutorials on how to create your own stars at home to display this winter, and running a competition for their favourite star designs with prints and books for the winners! All entries can be submitted via email on hello@wearescip.co.uk or we can be tagged using @ wearescip on Instagram. This event is being held in association with Seaford Town Council and with support from The Chalkcliff Trust, and will be running based on current covid-19 regulations as of 2nd November 2020. The Star Gazing trail stars will be heading into an online auction after the exhibition and the profits will be used to enable SCIP to provide free children’s art workshops once the Covid threat has passed. It is our group’s strong belief that every child and family should have access to arts experiences, regardless of income so will always provide these for free.

SCIP are delighted to have been able to curate an event during these difficult times, and the added complications of making an exhibition Covid-proof has been difficult. This is why it was decided the exhibition would be in windows and we would create a trail which the community would always be able to enjoy regardless of Covid restrictions. ‘We are so pleased that we are able to work with independent shops in our town on the Star Gazing trail, we love exhibiting in unique locations. Now more than ever we need to support our local stores to ensure we keep the heart of our town alive, and we hope that the community will be able to head out to see the incredible artworks which have been created for the trail and be able to pop in and do some Christmas shopping at the same time!’ says Alice Carter, SCIP co-founder. SCIP are well known for creating unique arts events for the local community and work with some of the country’s best known illustrators. Neighbourhood Watch Roundup

Surreal is a word used best to describe the goings on of 2020, a year that has proven itself to be one that has challenged all of us to the extreme. Resilience is another, and we here at NHW must commend our Neighbours for weathering everything with the grace, kindness and sensibility that you have. Seaford and Bishopstone have proven once again that ordinary people can, and do, achieve extraordinary things when they come together with common purpose. There are a few organisations that must be commended for the body of work they have done for our town. First and foremost is the Seahaven Foodstore who rallied from the start and in quite challenging circumstances, grew their food parcel distribution from an already stretched 30 households to well over 150 households per week. Our ability as a community to help wherever needed is demonstrated in the volume of food, supplies and support given through this tumultuous year and our foodbank continues, because of our great community, to give to those most in need. Volunteers all, a round of applause from the neighbours to the Seahaven Foodstore – where Toucans (two cans) really do make all the difference and where sharing means everyone is fed. The Seaford Rotary Clubs have stepped in across the entire community, most noticeably with the Storehouse, arranging funds, collection and delivery, and willing volunteers to pack, fetch and carry, and have shown once again that the heart of any town is in its people. This is great neighbourliness and again, the neighbours are applauding. Seaford Town Football Club called the town to action to provide free school meals during half term – within hours of raising the call, the community rallied, as we do, with an astonishing sum of money and Morrisons stepped to the fore with donated food items. 62

30

children who would otherwise have been hungry, were well fed, once again, by volunteers. Applause all round for an absolutely sterling example of kindness and care. Seaford Volunteer Emergency Team svet.proffer.org. uk have been the backbone of community support since day one and have tirelessly and without falter provided support to the entire town, however that support may be needed. From fetching and carrying of medicines, groceries, food parcels and errand running to a friendship service calling isolated and lonely neighbours to keep in touch and in contact, the service they have given to our town is absolutely incredible. Again, entirely volunteer driven and run, we cannot heap more praise if we tried. They embody great neighbourliness and deserve our utmost gratitude and respect. Sew Sussex www.sewsussex.co.uk started as a group of a dozen or so seamsters and grew in a matter of weeks to an army of over 2,000 who have not stopped sewing and with the help of S&BNHW, have produced nigh on a hundred thousand wearables and scrubs to support the NHS. They realised early on that to get through, they have to travel together and we are delighted that these sewing champs have formed a fully established social enterprise out of their good works and continue wherever they are needed. There are many more to mention and for our neighbours who have helped, fetched, carried, cared, stepped in, donated, volunteered and through their willingness, carried us through – you make our town the best there is. We exemplify neighbourliness. We did not get caught in neighbourhood snitching – we were too busy helping.

As the year draws to a close, lets take the good from 2020 with us. The kindness, the cheer, the sharing, the caring, and keep building our resilience. There is hope on the horizon for vaccines and cures, but the journey ahead is still a long one as we recover and rebuild. In closing, a message from our Chairman, Mark Brown. Dear Neighbours, We have been through very turbulent times with the onslaught of Covid-19, Government lockdowns and everchanging rules and regulations. The way we have behaved as a town through these times is exemplary and our thanks as a committee to all for being safe harbour in stormy seas to so many. Please be assured that our Neighbourhood Watch Association continues to function, and your committee is managing to meet through video conference meetings on Zoom. We will continue to keep you informed of events as they unfold through our Email and website programme. We recently made a retirement presentation of a silver bowl to Fred Newman who is one of the longest serving members on our committee. For over four decades he has served on the Neighbourhood Watch, and his words of wisdom and advice will be much missed. Each year the committee decides on which organisation we should support with a donation. This year the committee decided to donate £500 to the Poppy Appeal of the Royal British Legion who do wonderful work with helping exservice men and women who have fallen on hard times.

This year the Legion is suffering from a severe shortfall in income as due to Covid-19 poppy collectors are not able to collect from door to door and in shopping venues. On behalf of the committee I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and the hope that we will all be able to celebrate with friends and family. Let’s light up our town with care and good cheer regardless. Stay safe and well. Mark Brown, Chairman. In the interval between Lockdown#1 and Lockdown#2 the current joint Presidents, Ann Read and Janis Livingstone at last managed to visit Moira Quinnell and present her with a fine orchid, as well as the thanks of the Inner Wheel Club of Seaford for handling a very difficult time in the Club’s history. The current management team has been unable to ‘get stuck into the 2020-2021 year,’ but hopefully they will soon be able carry out plans for helping the community and raising funds for overseas charities. The support we planned for the local Young Carers group at Christmas will have to be reviewed to fit in with the current restrictions.

Thank you for your support

Christmas is NOT cancelled I’ve seen a lot in the media recently that has upset me. I am sure this year that we have all got a little fed up of the doom and gloom being spread by the media. But recently, it seems to have got out of control. The BBC reported that Christmas ‘may be cancelled’ and wondered what the Government could do to ‘save Christmas’. Well, you know what? It is NOT cancelled and there is no need to ‘save’ anything. For those of us that celebrate it, Christmas is magical for so many reasons and it isn’t just about who is sitting around your table stuffing themselves with turkey. Like many, this year I won’t be able to see my family, but we are still going to have a lovely Christmas. The kids don’t need to know about what isn’t possible, only what is definitely going to happen. I have it on good authority that Father Christmas is a key worker and will still be working the 24th December 2020; this is a non negotiable fact.

Not exactly the same as a hug or sharing some mulled wine together, but do you know what, after the year we have all had, I am going to be grateful to share some of my day with them, even if only through the wonders of technology. We live somewhere beautiful so hopefully in the run up to Christmas we can all enjoy some wonderful walks and fresh air – if the great British weather allows! I love the walk from South Barn to Cuckmere, the view of the Seven Sisters never failing to amaze. Wrapping up warm with our hats, scarves and maybe a flask of hot chocolate, sounds pretty magical to me. The council will no doubt add some ‘Christmas Magic’ to the town with the Christmas lights on Broad Street, a walk/drive down there on a gloomy December evening, is always brightened up by the display, something for us all to enjoy and be proud of. I remember growing up in a village that had no Christmas decorations whatsoever, so I am always incredibly impressed by what this town can achieve. The traditions that many of us have had over the years will continue, regardless of COVID-19 and the media going mad; sitting and listening to the carols from Kings College, decorating your Christmas tree with your favourite pieces, settling down to watch one of the many Christmas films that will flood our television channels, having a chat with a family member/friend you haven’t spoken to for a while or writing a stack of Christmas cards with a glass of something warm. Let’s all remember that Christmas was never and will never be cancelled. It may be different, it may not be the same as our last, but the magic of Christmas will still be with you, in whatever form you choose. J Hanby Penn

‘Deck the halls with boughs of holly,’ urges the old Christmas carol, ’tis the season to be jolly,’ it continues, and I’m sure we can all relate to that. After almost a year of COVID caution we certainly need some jollity. The period around the winter solstice (21st December), was celebrated by ancient peoples long before the arrival of Christianity, and their mistletoe and yule logs have been incorporated into the festival of Christmas. After the shortest day of the solstice the days start getting longer in the move towards spring, and Norse peoples would light fires to symbolise the heat and light of the returning sun. In the Celtic tradition the Druids would cut the sacred mistletoe, a plant that has many healing properties, and offer it as a blessing. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology. I’m writing this in Lockdown#2, knowing that Christmas 2020 will not be as usual, but the lights will certainly be switched on to lift our spirits, and like our forebears we can deck our halls with winter greenery. to d

evergreens

Evergreens are star performers in the winter garden, when deciduous shrubs have shed their leaves and perennials have died back they come into their own. Variegated varieties with gold or white splashed foliage will certainly brighten your border in winter, and there are many hardy plants to choose from. Obviously choice will depend on position, spread, rate of growth etc., and you must bear in mind that variegated plants generally perform better in good light, although there are exceptions. Hedera colchica Sulphur Heart, Persian ivy, will brighten up gloomy areas, covering vertical surfaces with its large bright gold and lime green leaves. This plant has an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the RHS. Also Hedera helix Goldheart, a native ivy with gold blotched leaves. Ivies are excellent plants for our feathered friends, providing food and shelter. Aucuba japonica, Spotted laurel, is another shadetolerant evergreen that will grow almost anywhere, including dry shade and coastal locations. Try ivory speckled Crotonifolia. Skimmias, although not variegated, are useful shade evergreens due to bright berries on female plants and prominent showy flower buds on male plants. These neat shrubs are easily grown, but you will need both male and female plants for berries. Skimmia japonica Obsession, produces lots of berries, it’s good combined with the showy male variety Skimmia japonica Rubella, or maybe Skimmia x confusa Kew Green. So if your winter view from the potting shed is dull, add some evergreens.

Sara (Chairman) and the Committee wish all members a very merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy New Year.

Wednesday 4th November saw volunteers revelling in the bright sunshine of a frosty morning as they worked fast to finish tidying up our delightful corner of the Crouch before the double whammy of Lockdown#2 and the onset of winter. secateurs snip-snapped and brooms fizzed along As the paths to collect fallen leaves and clippings, Maggie was still busy on the sales table selling apples and the last few green tomatoes, while those apples left on our productive trees will either still be there for us to harvest when we reopen or will become a welcome feast, for birds and insects.

Talking of insects our Bob the Herb has been out and about in the community, three miles away at the Newhaven end of Tidemills, to see how we can help out the Long-tailed Blue butterfly. A handful of these exotic migrants from the Mediterranean have been crossing the UK coastline each year, but experts believe climate change is behind this butterfly recently reaching our shores more regularly and in vastly increased numbers. The Friends of Tidemills have made the pleasing discovery that this butterfly has been increasing in numbers locally, its presence due in part to the prevalence of their favourite fodder, the perennial sweet pea. Sadly, however, these plants grew around the area now taken up by the new bridge and many have been grubbed up during construction. So, Bob brought the problem to

52

us. We have now planted up seeds at the garden and hopefully next spring we can transfer the plants to Tidemills ready for the Long-tailed Blues to dine on should they reappear in the summer. It’s heartening to think that by doing something like this we can reach out into the much wider community. Likewise, people are very generous to us. Last month we requested… no, begged for… plant donations to swell our sales tables, so thanks to Ann for the alpines, with promises of astilbes, cerinthes and penstemons to come. More please, in the event that we will be open again soon after you read this. But back to The Day Before Lockdown and it was terrific to talk to new recruit Oliver, aged 12, who was exchanging botanical knowledge with volunteer Phil. As Phil got him digging up strawberry plants from a low bed prior to transferring them to a raised bed with netting, Oliver explained that he had a particular interest in plants because it was his ambition to become an environmental food scientist. Thanks to recent efforts our garden should be in good enough shape to survive a month of lockdown. We will still be maintaining the garden behind the closed gates (two at a time in accordance with the rules) and we look forward to welcoming you back as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, let’s raise a tinselled trowel and fork to a happy Christmas. The Garden Team Photos from top: Phil, left, and Oliver deal with the strawberry plants; More cutting back for James; Allison puts her back into it; Ann will cut these stems into small pieces for the compost; The last rosy apples of the season.

Seaford Natural History Society

Autumn Wildlife in Seaford

It has been a busy few weeks for members of the Seaford Natural History Society who have been excited by infrequent visitors. A huge Bearded Vulture with a wingspan of 275cms, was spotted in midOctober, dwarfing the crows mobbing it. Birdwatchers flocked to Seaford Head to spot rare warblers as squadrons of swallows and martins gathered for migration, whilst Convolvulus Hawk Moths, one of the biggest moths to be seen in the UK, with wingspans of 12cm, have been blown in from across the Channel. No less exciting is the wildlife that can be seen regularly around Seaford at this time of year. For example, at Splash Point the Kittiwakes have left but Herring Gulls and Great Black Backed Gulls feed on the beach whilst Rock Pipits peck un-noticed around people’s feet on The Shoal. Little Egrets and Cormorants hang out on and around the chalk stack and seals and dolphins have been seen just offshore. Meanwhile Friston Forest abounds with mushrooms and toadstools such as the Earthstar and Common Inkcap, following the wettest start to October since 1982.

Animals, Wildlife Photography and Barn Owls, whilst preparations are in hand for the summer programme. New members are always welcome to join us in these Zoom sessions: Membership details from Richard Mongar (richardmongar@btnternet.com). Photos from top left clockwise: Great Black Backed Gull; Rock Pipet; Convolvulus Hawk Moth; Grey Seal. Photos by Ann Roe and Jim Howell.

The Society has adapted to Covid-19 restrictions and continues to discuss and observe both the ordinary and extraordinary natural history around Seaford. Members have continued throughout this time to observe and record the wildlife around us. Our regular summer walks were replaced by publication of a series of local nature trails that guided members around places of interest, such as Southerham Nature Reserve and Cradle Valley. The regular winter talks now take place over Zoom, and have recently covered the life of the Orange Tip butterfly and the conservation of chalk grassland. A regular newsletter is circulated to members to keep them abreast of the latest wildlife news. If, as seems likely, Covid-19 restrictions continue into next year, the SNHS is ready to provide a full and lively programme. In the next few weeks we will host Zoom sessions, talks on topics as varied as Extinct To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

school entered the CPRE, The Countryside Charity Sussex competition during Lockdown#1 to celebrate and help the children remember their conservational work and encourage to continue this at home when they couldn’t come into school. They shared the hard work they had carried out over the last twelve months, building bughouses, a hedgehog hotel and worm world, as well as achieving their first green flag. Cradle Hill pupils are now back at school and have started forest schools. They have been having a super fun time building dens, creating natural collages, painting with mud, digging, reading, playing in the mud kitchen, swinging in a hammock and drinking hot chocolate round the camp fire! Garden and Eco Club will be starting up again soon and their first project is to finish the school remembrance garden, which was started during Lockdown. They will be building an eco-brick path and planter in this area.

Thank you to The National Lottery! Seaford-based The Youth Counselling Project has been awarded a grant of £10,000. This badly needed money will be used to develop additional ways of helping students at Seaford schools who are in need of therapy from specially trained counsellors appointed by the charity. The sad fact is that 10% of our children will suffer mental health problems before they are 18. Fears arising from Covid-19 are making a bad situation even worse and these could well be increased by the latest lockdown.

The Youth Counselling Project is committed to finding the money to pay for counselling for 75 students from Seaford Head School and the town’s primary schools during this academic year, and is concerned about the continuation of major funding as the UK faces an uncertain economic future. Students are generally offered 10 sessions of therapy costing about £500 for each block, including running costs. Some students, however, prefer to have group therapy and others favour distance rather than face-to-face sessions, as was discovered during the first lockdown when ways had to be found to continue the therapy. The two new group sessions accommodate between six and eight secondary age students at a time. So not only is the Project very grateful for donations from corporate bodies but also for gifts and funds raised by local people. We have benefited from money raised from various local events but of course have temporarily lost this income due to coronavirus restrictions, so it is brilliant to receive donations, like the £1,600 presented by former chief fundraiser Rosalind Lacey to chair Julia Hancock. This money was donated by friends of her late husband Clive who died last summer and who was a co-founder of The Youth Counselling Project. Rosalind said: ‘Clive was passionate about TYCP. Although most of the donations – rather than flowers – were from friends, there was a very large donation from someone who only knew Clive from a distance at the Archway Choir, who thought he was a true gentleman with a lovely smile. This person felt very strongly about the valuable work of TYCP and wanted to help one young person in our lovely community of Seaford.’ To find out more about how you could help the charity, please visit our website on www.tycp.org.uk Photos from top: Chair Julia Hancock, left, receives a cheque from Clive Lacey’s widow Rosalind; Clive Lacey.

Who’s ready for a festive trail? A special festive activity that obeys all the Lockdown rules is being held at St Peter’s Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford, on Saturday 12th December. It is aimed at families and is a fun challenge that everyone can take part in, whether church members or not. Families are invited to join a festive trail (pick up a pack at the church between 2pm and 4pm) and set out on the route around the churchyard, then down to Blatchington Pond, and back. It should take about 30 minutes. The idea, says the Rector, the Rev Arwen Folkes, is to offer the chance for families to take their daily exercise with fun. On the trail they are invited to find clues that will be hidden on the route, up in trees for instance. It’s going to be rather like a festive treasure hunt.

S. R. DAVIS & SONS ESTABLISHED 1978

BUILDERS & DECORATORS UPVC FACIAS & GUTTERS

And at the end, back at the church, the families will be invited to respond to ideas set out in a letter suggesting things to do at home which they can photo and share on the church website. There will also be an invitation to share an online crib service to be held on Sunday 20th December at 4.30pm. A crib will be placed outside the building (under cover if necessary, of course), and around it will be stars hanging from bushes and trees which people are invited to take home. All this is an enterprise by St Peter’s which, as with so many churches, has frustratingly been so restricted in activities this year, and is anxious to make some kind of festive mark this month in a way in which everyone can share.

To join in the festive trail it is important for families to book a specific time on line, so that organisers can allow an interval between each. Go to the website www.ebbchurches.org.uk/ families to pick a slot between 2pm and 4pm. Photo: St Peter's church, Belgrave Road, Seaford.

Bringing Tide Mills back to life LYT Productions, directed by Phil Rose, are currently working on the Tide Mills Project, a major creative heritage enterprise. It is backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, and the South Downs National Park. Highly regarded professional artists, designers, sculptors, poets, musicians and writers are collaborating with LYT Productions and the local community to bring Tide Mills back to life. This work will culminate in a celebratory week next September. The event will be free, accessible – and open for everybody to take part. Schools, colleges, young people, families and retirees in the community are learning from the professionals and are sharing their talents. Although a quiet wildlife sanctuary now, Tide Mills was once a hive of industry. Ruins of an old village, mill and hospital are still visible and one can imagine past lives, before it was deserted. Stables for retired racehorses were once on the site, as was an early radio station and a seaplane station. In future months, we shall tell you more about the history of Tide Mills and the ways in which you can get involved with the project. For more information and to join the mailing list, visit www.tidemillsproject.uk. Phil Rose founded LYT Productions 12 years ago. THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE, SEAHAVEN BRANCH On the Tuesday after Remembrance Sunday each year a gathering at the Memorial in Seaford Cemetery commemorates the West Indian, Irish and Canadian soldiers who were camped in and around the town during the First Word War and later. Many of the West Indian troops fell ill from the 1918 ’flu epidemic and died. Usually this event, organised by our branch Committee Member and former Town Mayor, Linda Wallraven, sees representatives from the countries involved along with many Veteran Association Standards and other supporters. Usually this is followed by a gathering for light refreshments after the formalities, last year that was at the View in Seaford. Because of Lockdown#2, the full event was cancelled, so a small number of local people as well as members of the Seahaven Branch assembled by the Memorial

in the Cemetery on Tuesday 10th November. At just before 11am Branch President, Laurie Holland laid the wreath, then following the exhortation, Heidi Watkins sounded Last Post then Reveille after the two-minute silence. The Kohima exhortation followed and then the event was closed by a short address of thanks by Chairman Bob Peedle MBE. President Laurie Holland was flanked by the Standard of St George carried by Frank Holland and the Standard of the Canadian Veterans.

Open windows and allow movement and replenishment of air to stop the build-up of harmful chemicals. The exception to this is if you live on a main road in a city. In this case open windows at night when there’s less traffic. You’ll sleep more easily in a cool room as well. Plants can remove some toxic pollutants from the air. The effect isn’t huge, but a few plants in your living space will have a positive effect on air quality. When cooking, make sure you have your ventilator fan on. Don’t smoke inside – smoke hangs around for a long time, and toxins seep into soft furnishings. Be careful with cleaning products. They often produce volatile organic compounds. Be even more careful with air fresheners, which can irritate asthmatic conditions Wooden flooring can be good for air quality, providing you sweep daily. Carpets retain more dust deep in their pile and are often treated with formaldehyde-donating chemicals, which decrease air quality. Dust mites too can live in carpets, as well as soft furnishings. Their faecal droppings can trigger allergies and asthma. High humidity can make a home prone to mould spores. Minimise humidity by ventilating or using a dehumidifier and treat mould on walls promptly. Consider having a fan fitted in the shower area or open a window and wipe down all wet surfaces after use. Citizens Advice tips on keeping energy bills down

Citizens Advice offers tips on keeping energy bills down now the weather is turning and the heating bills are going to go up, particularly if you are not going back into the office before January. There’s lots you can do to keep bills down. Firstly, see if you can get a better deal by changing your energy supplier. Compare prices and check their customer service record before switching. The Citizens Advice has a price comparison tool on our website, and star rating to assess the customer service records of the 40 biggest companies. Also look at those everyday things that can help; switch off televisions and other devices overnight, do not leave them on standby; wash clothes on a lower temperature; and only boil the kettle with the water you need. A way of cutting costs long term is to invest in good insulation – or ask your landlord to do so. If your pay is close to the national minimum wage, the extra costs of working from home could be counted as a pay cut and bring you below the legal level. Talk to your manager, HR department, or your union rep. Finally, your employer should pay for costs connected to your health and safety while working from home. Check the company Expenses Policy; you may be able to claim for other things e.g. suitable chair for computer work, printer ink or telephone line rental. In a Pickle

Quick pickling is the new big thing in the kitchen When I was a child, family get-togethers involved buffet lunches. One of the highlights were the big jars of ‘quick pickles’ that my father, aunts and uncles had been taught to make by my grandmother. Quick pickles are vegetables pickled in a solution of vinegar, water, salt and sometimes sugar, then kept in the fridge. These are not deeply pickled onions, nor fermentation. Quick pickles taste light, fresh and crunchy. My grandmother pickled fresh veg from her garden during the Second World War. Veg needs to be superfresh and undamaged. It can be cut to any shape. I like to boil green veg such as green beans and asparagus for two or three minutes then plunge them into icecold water to preserve their bright colour, but it’s optional. To make the basic brine, use equal parts light vinegar and water. By light vinegar I mean white, apple cider, white wine, or rice vinegar. Don’t use pickling vinegars or balsamic. To the brine add whatever spices you like. Dill seed, chilli flakes and garlic are nice. Coriander, ginger, turmeric and thyme work with carrots. Classic combinations include green beans with garlic and fresh dill, and cherry tomatoes with black peppercorns and garlic. We grew some squash this year and quick pickled some of the little ones with onion and garlic. Wide-mouthed large jars are the best containers. Wash them and their lids, and rings in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Allow to dry completely. Wash and dry the vegetables then prep them. Peel any carrots, trim the end of beans etc. Cut vegetables into evenly sized pieces. Add any flavourings to the jars. You can choose different flavours for each vegetable jar. Pack the vegetables as tightly into the jars as you can without damaging them, leaving a couple of centimetres’ space at the top. To make the brine, place the vinegar, water, salt and any sugar into a small saucepan. Heat on high to bring to the boil. Stir to dissolve the salt and sugar. Pour the hot brine over the vegetables, filling each jar to within 2cm

82

of the top. You’ll get better at judging how much brine to make as you repeat the process. Gently tap the jars against the counter a few times to remove all the air bubbles. Top up with more brine if needed. Seal the jars tightly. Cool to room temperature and then refrigerate for at least 48 hours. The pickles improve with flavour as they age. They can be stored in the fridge for about two months.

Flavours for Quick Pickles Fresh herbs: dill, thyme, oregano and rosemary hold up well. Dried herbs: thyme, dill, rosemary, oregano or marjoram. Garlic cloves: smashed for mild garlic flavour, or sliced for stronger garlic flavour. Fresh ginger: peeled and thinly sliced. Whole spices: mustard seed, coriander, peppercorns, red pepper flakes, chilli flakes. Ground spices: turmeric or smoked paprika are great for both colour and flavour.

Vegetables for Pickling Cucumbers, summer squash, ginger, red onion – thinly sliced. Carrots – Peel and cut into batons or rounds. Green beans, asparagus – blanch to preserve colour. Cherry tomatoes – pickle whole. Sally Harris

Energy Efficiency Update

Green Homes Grant Scheme

In the October Seaford Scene article, we gave an outline of the Green Homes Grant Scheme, a government scheme to provide grants (not loans) in the form of vouchers up to £5,000 to help make homes more energy efficient. The scheme covers at least two thirds of the cost of improvements but people on low incomes can claim 100% with a maximum of £10,000. It includes work on insulation and low carbon heating (plus draught proofing, double- and triple glazing, and heating controls and insulation, provided you have done work on insulation or low carbon heating).

Important deadline When we wrote the article, we were not aware that the scheme had a tight time limit – Green Homes Scheme vouchers must be spent by 31st March 2021. It may be that this will be extended because of pandemic regulations, but at the time of writing, the deadline of 31st March 2021 is still in place. For more information on the Green Homes Grant Scheme, see the Simple Energy Advice Service - https:// www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk/

Air Source Heat Pumps One of the low carbon heating options covered by the Green Homes Grant Scheme is air source heat pumps (ASHPs). These absorb heat from the outside air to heat your home and hot water. They need electricity

method of heating your home.

to run, but because they are extracting renewable heat from the environment, the heat they provide is greater than the electricity they use. This can make them an energy efficient

They work by absorbing heat from the air at low temperature and converting it into a liquid. The liquid passes through a compressor, increasing the temperature, and transfers that higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house. There are two types of ASHPs – air-to-water and air-to-air. Airto-water is the more common in the UK – it provides heat via your wet central heating system.

Heating costs An ASHP could save money on

heating costs if you are replacing a central heating system run on an old LPG or oil-fired boiler or old electric storage heaters and is less cost effective in replacing modern gas boilers – but still worth considering because combined with good insulation it should help reduce CO emissions. ²

Cost and grants ASHPs are pricy to install – Which? estimates that the cost of installing a typical ASHP system ranges between £6,000 and £8,000. However, there are two possible ways of funding installation – the Green Homes Grant Scheme mentioned above or the Renewable Heat Incentives Scheme, another government scheme where you have to pay the installation cost up front but can claim quarterly payments for seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat it’s estimated the system produces. Which? magazine has recently done a report on ASHPs (and other renewable heat options), including information on the Renewable Heat Incentive which is well worth a look if you are thinking about this sort of system – see: https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/groundand-air-source-heat-pumps/article/air-source-heatpumps-explained-al5MC4f773Zq Another good source of information is the Energy Savings Trust: https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/ Anne Fletcher and Mary De Pleave

Martello Rotary Seaford

Environment activity update

Back in the October 2020 Seaford Scene, we invited anyone who wanted to become a ‘Friend of ’ one of Seaford’s new Local Green Spaces, to contact Charlie Grimble on cagrimble@gmail.com. That invitation is still open, so if you want to join this important initiative, which Martello Rotary is partnering with Seaford Community Partnership, contact Charlie as soon as you can. To recap, the four spaces we are focusing on at present are: • Last Wood and Meadow, Alfriston Road • The Ridings, Lexden Road • Normansal Park/Chalvington Fields • Grand Avenue bridleway/Princess drive open space This initiative is part of a bigger series of environmental projects that are the subject of a major Lottery funded bid promoted by Seaford Community Partnership, the outcome of which we are awaiting confidently in the coming days. If successful, we will be able to make real progress in developing ideas for enhancing the quality of each of these spaces. That, in turn, will lead to a more substantial bid in about a year’s time. More local input and support given to these spaces increases the chances of a successful bid to funders. Five Members of Martello Rotary have given their skills and time to encourage this new initiative and are already working together as a group to pool experience and maintain the momentum of this exciting project. Because of the potential beneficial impact of this initiative, we will be posting regular updates to let you know how it is progressing. So, keep on watching this space, but more importantly come and join us and make a difference to our local environment

Missing the Mince Pie 10 this year? Try the Seaford Striders Virtual Run! For those who are missing their Mince Pie 10 this year, Seaford Striders, in conjunction with Seaford Martello Rotary are offering this as a Virtual Run, to take place between 1st December and 24th December. This race has been a regular event in the Seaford racing

86

calendar, but current restrictions due to Covid-19 looked like putting a stop to that. So, this year you are invited to participate, gain sponsorship and ‘do your bit’ for the community, by raising much needed funds. The race must be run in a single attempt and if you do it in groups, you must stick to the current restrictions on social distancing. As it is a virtual challenge, the course can be at the runner’s discretion. Anything from a glorious run across the Downs to lots of circuits of your back garden will count, provided the distance is covered in one attempt. For more details and registration go to https://race-nation.co.uk/register/ seaford-martello-rotary/the-mince-pie-10 Happy running!

Support our Seaford Charities Most charities and not for profit organisations in Seaford are in a financial crisis because of lost income and fundraising opportunities. Five service organisations have come together to enable these groups to raise funds for themselves. An event is scheduled for 10-11th April 2021 on the Martello Fields and is to be known as ‘Support our Seaford Charities’. Groups will have ‘free of charge’ pitches to raise funds for themselves and ‘what they raise they keep’. The organisers will arrange entertainment, food, and drink stalls to attract visitors who will buy from or donate to the charity stalls. This is an event supporting our Mayor’s ‘Charities Support Initiative’. An application has been made to the Town Council for a day’s hiring of these large fields including submission of layout and a risk assessment in support of the application. The organising group comprises Martello Rotary, Seaford Rotary, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions, Seaford Bonfire Society and National Coast Watch Institution – Newhaven. These groups will provide the event volunteers and most of the equipment needed. Opportunities exist to sponsor the event and to assist covering those costs that cannot be covered by the organising groups, all of whom are charities and are also dealing with severely reduced income this year. Contact Martello Rotary for further information on contact@ martellorotary.org.uk or use our QR code to visit our web site.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

seaford afternoon flower club At the time of writing this copy (beginning of November) we are about to enter our second Lockdown – a prospect many of us, I am sure, find very daunting. All the more reason to try to lift our spirits by resorting to valuing the glorious nature around us and counting our blessings that we live in such a beautiful part of the country. The theme for our October competition was appropriately entitled Autumn Leaves and this gave our members the opportunity to get out and gather someof the beautifully colourful foliage that appeared on the trees and hedgerows. We hope you enjoy the photographs on the right. Like most other clubs in the area, we do not know when we will be able to resume our meetings, and can only wish everyone a peaceful and cheerful Christmas and we look forward to a healthier and more joyous 2021.

Parmesan Biscuits

Moreish festive goodies – great for gifts Preparation time: 20 minutes plus resting time. Cooking time: 10-20 mins. Makes about 24.

Ingredients

100g cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks, 100g plain flour, plus extra for flouring, pinch salt, pinch cayenne pepper, 1 heaped tsp mustard powder, 50g finely grated mature cheddar, 50g finely grated parmesan, or similar vegetarian hard cheese, plus a little extra,1 egg, beaten.

Method

Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4. Place the butter and flour into a bowl of a food processor with the salt, cayenne, mustard powder, and cheeses. Rub the fat into the flour mixture then

gradually bring the mixture together to form a dough. Don’t add egg or water. Wrap the dough in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Lightly flour a work surface and gently roll out the pastry to about 1cm thick. Cut out the biscuits using festive cutters. Lay them out on a greased baking tray about 2cm apart. You might need two trays. Brush the surface of each biscuit with the beaten egg and sprinkle over a little finely grated parmesan. Bake for 10 minutes, or until they are golden-brown. They smell heavenly! Remove from the oven and carefully lift the biscuits off the tray using a palette knife, then place on a rack to cool. They make lovely gifts and will keep well in a sealed container for a few days.

Festive Fun in the Time of COVID! It’s been a weird old year. How on Earth can we celebrate in the midst of all this? We’d all be forgiven for feeling more flat than festive. What we need are some simple ways to find fun in the time of COVID. The pandemic will mean Christmas won’t look like it usually does, but with a bit of thought and creativity it’s still possible to celebrate, even if we have to spend Christmas away from friends and family:

Prioritize: Which traditions matter most to you? Which are easiest to maintain?

You can still set up the Christmas decorations, make special foods and watch your favourite films. Pantomimes and trips to the ballet are not possible though, so use the family time to set up a games evening with prizes and lots of shouting. You can play charades with friends and family either outside or via video link. My kids love Nintendo Just Dance, and find it hilarious when my husband and I join in. Kids mostly just want you...in silly festive mode. So put your phone away, just like you would at the theatre, and get stuck in. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. Decorate a tree outside: this is the year to deck out your decking, and pretty your patio. Adorn an outdoor tree with LED lights and shatterproof ornaments. Use twist ties or florist’s wire to secure the ornaments so they stay put even in the wind. Then invite a few friends round for a socially distanced switch on, complete with mulled wine (if restrictions allow).

Make memories:

Create an advent calendar with festive activities for each day. The activities don’t have to be elaborate; it could just be drinking hot chocolates with marshmallows together, wearing Santa hats, or watching Elf, or taking silly festive photos Start a new tradition. How about a Secret Santa gift exchange outside round a firepit with toasted marshmallows? Or outdoor games on the decking with blankets and hot chocolate? There might be an outdoor cinema near you showing Christmas films. Go with friends, take blankets and flasks, and have a socially distanced outdoor film night(if restrictions allow).

Spread some joy: If 2020 has taught us

anything, it’s how much the people in our lives actually mean to us, so spread happiness where you can. Write down how much the people you love mean to you and send it out to them. Make Christmas cookies and leave some with your friends and neighbours. Drop off some treats at a local nursing home, hospital, or fire department to brighten the lives of the people there.

Different can be special:

You probably don’t remember exactly what happens at Christmas from year to year, but when something out of the ordinary occurs, it sticks in your memory...Christmas disasters often make the best dinner party stories in the years that follow. 2020 has the capacity to give us all enough stories for decades! Robin Redbreast

How the robin came to symbolise Christmas Think of winter in the garden and you’ll most likely think of a robin. Think of Christmas cards and you’ll probably think of the same.

Why do robins have such a strong association with winter? There is actually an increase in robin numbers during the winter months. They migrate from Scandinavia, Russia and Europe swelling the ranks of our resident robins when the days become too cold and food becomes scarce in their own countries. There are several legends relating robins to winter and Christmas in particular.

The first legend hails from Victorian times, when the tradition of sending Christmas cards started. Royal Mail postmen of the time wore bright red uniforms, which earned them the nickname of ‘robin’ or ‘redbreast’. Victorian artists usually illustrated Christmas cards with pictures relating to the delivery of letters, such as postboxes and postmen. Eventually artists began to play on this word association and postman ‘robin’ was exchanged for the familiar little brown and red bird, who began to appear in illustrations, sometimes delivering the letters. Middle class Victorians loved all things sentimental and charming, so the trend caught on and continues to this day, with the robin adorning everything from wrapping paper to Christmas jumpers. Even before the Victorian era, robins had a strong association with the traditional Christmas story and Christianity. In one tale, it is said that when Mary was giving birth to baby Jesus in the stable, she noticed the fire Joseph had lit was in danger of going out. Suddenly, a small brown bird appeared and started flapping its wings in front of the fire, fanning the embers, and causing it to roar back to life. As the bird flew around tending to the fire, a stray ember made its way towards the tiny creature, scorching its breast bright red. Mary declared that the red breast was a sign of the bird’s kind heart, which would be passed on to its descendants to wear proudly ever after. There are also Celtic-based tales which link the robin with wintertime. One tells of the feud between the wren, known as the Holly King of Winter, and the robin who was known as the Oak King of Summer. The Holly King was driven away by the Oak King on the Winter Solstice, and the robin took his rightful place. However, on the Summer Solstice, the Holly King gets to take his revenge, and the wren replaces the robin. This story repeats every year and represents the changing of the seasons. It was probably told by way of explaining why we see more robins during the winter months. Whatever the truth, the robin is a beautiful cheery symbol of this time of year, and if you can spare a little food, particularly meal worms, and some water, the bird will reward you by visiting your garden daily. Happy Christmas!

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Collecting Seaford postcards by Lynn Lawson

‘Just a line to let you know how pleased we are with Seaford’, says the message on a postcard sent by a visitor staying in ‘very comfortable’ rooms at 6 The Esplanade in July 1907. The view on the reverse of the card features a house called Telsemaure, demolished in 1937 and now the site of the Viking flats. Such postcards provide a wonderful resource for anyone interested in Seaford’s past, with the photographs documenting changes in streets, buildings and fashion, and the messages often containing unique personal details about the town. My own collection includes postcards sent by soldiers stationed here in WW1 – ‘we are standing by for Egypt’ – and residents of the convalescent homes and boarding schools, such as the Seaford College

Collecting postcards from a particular place allows us to compare views of the same scene photographed in different eras. In an early 20th-century postcard of Clinton Place (posted 1904) horses and carts move along the tree-lined street, while a lady in Edwardian dress peers into one of the windows. In the post WW2 view (posted 1951), motor vehicles now dominate the road, and the trees and wroughtiron balconies have disappeared – although the buildings themselves are still recognisable today. Refill Seaford and Newhaven are looking forward Shoppers in Seaford and Newhaven are saying goodbye to pointless packaging as award-winning campaign Refill expands. As we explained last month from 1st October people in Seaford and Newhaven have been able to use the free app to find places to refill their coffee cup, lunchbox, groceries and even cleaning products and toiletries, making it the world’s first dedicated app helping people to find where they can bring their own containers and refill – shunning single-use plastic for good. It also highlights discounts available and rewarding consumers for reducing packaging. Last month Walbrin’s and Gabriella’s joined the campaign as well, offering plastic-free fruit and vegetables plus a bring-your-own strong containers to the butchers scheme. As I write this we have just heard that Christmas Magic which was to have taken place on 5th December has been cancelled. So our presence on The Seaford Environmental Alliance Stall, where you would have had a FREE chance to win a Chillys bottle and pick up our new flyer, has unfortunately not gone to plan. However, do let us know via our email, if you run or know of a business that wants to join the scheme or offer refills for coffee etc. You can sign up using the app or website and add the coffee cup icon. Please don’t forget you can download the Refill app here to get the location maps to find Refill points

https://www.refill. org.uk/get-therefill-app/ and also register your business and others if you have their permission. If you would like a Chilly’s bottle or food container, you can buy these from refill.org.uk/buy-abottle/. They make great Christmas gifts and you could even buy them for yourself to keep your lunch and drinks hot or cold – Chilly’s make a £10 donation to the Refill campaign. Find us on Facebook Refill Seaford and Newhaven and follow the group, Twitter: @RefillSN, Instagram: @refillsn. A Good Read

Patsy

by Nicole Dennis-Benn

Patsy grew up in an impoverished town in Jamaica and struggles to make ends meet, raising her 5-year-old daughter, Tru. But she has a dream – a dream that lies across the ocean in a city that never sleeps, watched over by Lady Liberty. She isn’t the only one. Many have left Jamaica for America, sending home details of their new lives. But you can’t just leave Jamaica and head to the US. When Patsy is finally granted a visa, it is only a visitor one...and just for her, not Tru. And so, leaving her daughter behind with her previously absent father, she begins her life as an undocumented migrant. It soon becomes clear that life in New York is not what she thought it would be. Dennis-Benn has created an engrossing novel showing the reality of the plight of migrants. Spanning a decade, it switches between Patsy and her new life and Tru’s childhood as she grows up without her mother. It says something about her skills as a writer that she

Sudoku

has created a central character that is so flawed and yet likeable at the same time. The dialogue switches effortlessly between English and Jamaican Patois, leaving you, the reader, as an inhabitant of the two worlds that Patsy herself occupies. Will she ever be reunited with her daughter, and how does a decision taken so long ago affect the two of them as life moves on around them in two vastly different countries?

The Boy at the Back of the Class

by Onjali Q Rauf

In a similar vein we have a story for children about what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land. The difference here is that Ahmet is not an economic migrant, but a refugee, fleeing civil war in Syria. He arrives one day at the start of term and sits in a chair at the back of the class, and carries a tattered old red backpack. He is quiet and spends break and lunchtime in seclusion. The 9 and ¾- year-old narrator and friends don’t know why he stays apart and are determined to find out why. When they finally learn of Ahmet’s story, they are determined to help him and seek the help of the one person in the country that they know can help: The Queen. A moving story, this directly challenges attitudes towards refugees and the children encounter adults who are sympathetic towards Ahmet’s plight, but also those who are not. Simple events show the kindness of strangers (the gift of a pomegranate), and gives hope that this next generation can be the one to bring in a change of attitude and a realisation that we are all one humanity. All too often we are quick to judge – and Rauf uses a very clever technique to bring this to the fore, leaving the reader re-evaluating everything they have read with just a few pages to go – rather than accepting. Ahmet’s story is sadly not just a story created in an author’s imagination but is one that too many children are experiencing for real – tattered backpack and all.

Long-tailed tits

The Ties that Bind

‘Who are these people?’ You’ve hardly seen them all year yet here you are, paper hat askew, squashed between them on the sofa at Christmas. On a branch out in the cold darkness of the garden, also sandwiched between aunts, brothers, cousins and daughters, a tiny bird is asking a similar question. Long-tailed tits and humans are two of Britain’s most social species. And just like a visit from your relatives, the arrival of a long-tailed tit flock in your garden can turn tranquillity into chaos. It’s like someone has emptied a box of feathered fireworks over the fence. They manically bicker on the bird feeder and swing acrobatically upside-down on the fat balls, all the while trilling, rattling and screaming ‘eee-heee-heee’ like a troupe of Michael Jackson impersonators. you’re witnessing is a group of roving relatives, roaming the neighbourhood to pillage your peanuts. This posse of outlaws consists of in-laws, brothers, sons and daughters. With their gorgeous pink, black and white plumage and those ridiculously long tails, these flying lollypops must qualify for Britain’s cutest bird. Then, suddenly they’re gone and the pulse rate of the garden returns to normal. By late winter the extended family will drift apart to find new partners, ready to start new families. In March, the foundations are laid for an epic construction. Moss building bricks are lashed together with ropes of sticky spider’s webs. The walls rise, a camouflage cladding of lichen is added to the roof and a cosy filling of a thousand feathers lines the interior. The end result looks a crocheted stomach and soon there will be plenty of rumbling from inside as eight hungry chicks demand to be fed. But raising a large family can take its toll. The constant hunt for insects can exhaust a parent almost to breaking point. And that’s when something unusual and wonderful happens. Their family arrives to save them. Aunties and uncles who have not been successful raising their own family that year will selflessly help the parents and feed their nephews and nieces. Once the children have flown the nest the whole gang remains together and joins with other siblings to form your chaotic neighbourhood feeding flock. But the biggest challenge of the year still awaits: winter. Freezing night-time temperatures exact a heavy toll on our garden birds. And that’s why at Christmas, hidden deep in a hedge, you’ll find the extended family of long-tailed tits huddled together on a frosty branch, sharing their warmth and surviving. Like them, we can all extend a warm wing to surround and support our family and friends this Christmas, whether near or far. Because none of us can get through this on our own. I AM OWED MONEY, WHAT CAN I DO? In these difficult times many people may find themselves owed money from a variety of sources. This could be unpaid invoices, rent arrears or payments defaulted under an agreement. For amounts under £10,000.00 including interest the small claims court is where the claim needs to be started. The application can be completed online by accessing the Online Civil Money Claims service or a paper version of the claim form can be completed and posted. There are court fees to submit a claim and this will depend on the value of the claim being made and range from £25.00 up to £455.00. Higher value claims up to £100,000.00 can also be started via the Money Claim Online service but in this case there can only be one claimant and no more than two defendants and the defendants must have an address in England or Wales. The court fee payable in this case is 4.5% of the amount being claimed for online applications or 5% for paper form applications. Claims above £100,000.00 cannot be made online and an application in paper form must be made to the High Court. The fee for claims between £100,000.00 and £200,000.00 is 5% of the value of the claim and for claims over £200,000.00 the fee is £10,000.00. With any of the claims described above the claimant must complete a claim form which must contain specific information. This will then be served on the other party. It is very important that all the relevant information is included and that interest, if being claimed, is correctly claimed. Failure to correctly complete the form could result in the claim being rejected.

Once the claim has been issued there are then deadlines for the defendant to either defend or admit the claim.

Can I reclaim solicitor’s costs? In the cases of a claim for a specified amount of money there are rules relating to how much a claimant can claim back for solicitors costs associated with the bringing of a claim. There are fixed amounts depending on the value of the claim and how it was served. If the claim is successful the defendant will normally be ordered to pay the fixed cost amount and the court fee. It is important to bear in mind that the costs of bringing a claim, if instructing a solicitor, may exceed the amount that is allowed to be claimed back.

Why the property market in Seaford is so enduringly popular If 2020 proved anything, it was that nothing is guaranteed and that future forecasts are nothing but educated guesses (some more than others). One thing which does seem predictable right now is the desirability of Seaford as a place to live. Since Lockdown#1 ended it’s been non-stop in the local property market with us, and in fairness, our other agency colleagues, being incredibly busy. This is down to the two months where the property market was on hold. The Lockdown#2 (we write this a week into it) seems not as restrictive to estate agents as the first. The Stamp Duty Holiday has also fuelled this activity, but there are other factors at play. Seaford was named as the second-best seaside town to live in the UK by a national paper. Other media picked up on this report and, Hey Presto! Our town is indeed on the national moving map.

So, yes, we are seeing lots of interest from London buyers heading down here, but also due to Seaford’s popularity people who live here rarely want to move away. This drives demand for property even more, and we can’t see that changing anytime soon. This is still a very good time to sell your home, primarily because this is such a popular town.

We’d like to wish all our clients, colleagues, and the community in Seaford a safe, healthy, and happy Christmas.

THE UNIQUE TOWN OF MCLEOD GANJ

Whilst restrictions of Lockdown have prevented us from travelling to far-flug places, here is a trip down ‘memory lane’ from Seaford resident, Val Franklin, when she visited India in 2001.

It is really cool up here. After the thrashing monsoon rains and breath-sucking humidity of Delhi and Rishikesh, it is a welcome relief. Gripping onto a small plateau in the Dhauladar Range of mountains at the foothills of the Himalayas, this quaintly named town of McLeod Ganj (photo right) is a unique blend of tradition and modern, drab and colourful, unknown and world renowned. Over two thousand metres above sea level, pristine blue skies radiate purity in direct contrast to the filth on the ground. Eagles soar relentlessly in the skies. The local bus journey from Dharamsala, was a test of endurance. The bus juddered its way up steep, winding roads, swinging around hairpin bends which drop hundreds of feet into chasms below, I felt I needed nerves of steel and the constitution of an ox to survive. The lolling head of the Indian man next to me fell on my shoulder as he snoozed. Forests of pine and red rhododendron trees squeeze this quaint town and its narrow, potholed roads into a tight band. Buildings beleaguered by harsh rains and strong suns offer the visitors a blend of Tibetan cafés selling momos and noodles, Indian biryanis and kormas, Kashmiri shawls and carpets. Interspersed are modern, clean and well-lit shops with an array of rare commodities in small Indian towns such as Tahini and peanut butter, Lipton’s tea and chocolate cakes. Liquor stores sit shoulder to shoulder with laundries and the shelves of Tibetan handicraft shops overflow with brocade wall hangings, ritual objects such as bells, prayer wheels and flags, delightfully painted tea mugs and bowls, and woolen blankets. A video hall advertises ‘5 Movies a Day’ on a blackboard. It is very dark inside with black curtains and wooden benches. And no popcorn. Along the roads, there are no pavements. Vendors sit knitting and chatting with their beautifully created turquoise and coral jewellery, yak wool shawls and gilets displayed on makeshift tables lining the streets. This is the setting for one of the most famous leaders of the world – the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan

116

Government in Exile. After the Chinese invasion of Tibet which caused enormous turmoil, anguish and horrendous suffering for the Tibetan people, the Dalai Lama escaped in 1959 in the hopes of achieving reprieve and support from Western countries. On arrival in India, the benevolent Indian Government offered him and his people hospitality and a safe refuge. In this unique situation, the Dalai Lama built a temple on the edge of a plateau and started giving teachings on Buddhist philosophy. His compassion, humour, sincerity and devotion quickly earned him a reputation which has encouraged and attracted many thousands of followers, devotees and even non-believers from almost every country, nationality and religion in the world. A popular walk is the Lingkor, a pathway lined with ubiquitous prayer flags and mani stones and hugging the side of this plateau, it encircles the Dalai Lama’s residence. Apart from affording magnificent views down the valleys, devotees believe that by circumambulating it and saying heartfelt mantras, negative deeds can be purified. It is to this extraordinary town, that thousands of people, some just curious, others searching for answers, come for hope and salvation. They are seldom disappointed. Many return year after year, many find accommodation and the means to support themselves for months or years at a time. I was one of them. I arrived with a backpack and a leap of faith, and stayed for 18 years. Despite a deluge of expected and unexpected challenges, I also found a pot pourri of cultures, languages and traditions in a melting pot of tolerance, friendliness, hospitality, kindness and extreme enthusiasm for learning and wisdom, rooted in the ancient Indian philosophy 3,000 years old. Val Franklin

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Have you ever given any thought to the science behind the snow? The ice crystals that make up snowflakes are patterned symmetrically because frozen water molecules arrange themselves in predetermined spaces known as crystallization, to form a six-sided snowflake. The basic shape of the ice crystal is partly due the temperature at which it forms, and to a lesser extent, partly due to the humidity of the air. Thus, we see long needle-like crystals at -5C° and flat plate-like crystals at -15Cº.

“We will beat any genuine quote”

The intricate shape of a single arm of the snowflake is determined by the atmospheric conditions experienced by entire ice crystal as it falls. A crystal might begin to grow arms in one manner, and then seconds later, a slight change in the surrounding temperature or humidity causes the crystal to grow in a different way. Although a snowflake is always six-sided and the arms may branch off in new directions, because each arm experiences the same atmospheric conditions, the arms look identical. Individual snowflakes are all unique because they all follow slightly different paths from the sky to the ground and thus encounter slightly different atmospheric conditions along the way. So, they all tend to look different, resembling everything from prisms and needles to tiny lace doilies. Louise Addison

Covid, Christmas and Care Supporting from a distance

We write this as hopeful news comes to us of progress in the fight against Covid-19 with possible new effective vaccines and, perhaps, finally light at the end of the tunnel for all those currently experiencing Lockdown#2. For us at Clifden House, precautionary lockdowns are likely to be a feature of our day to day lives for some time to come. In the meantime, a rather different Christmas approaches, but we continue to maintain routine whilst still enjoying this festive season and the benefits it can bring, along with making sure everyone feels loved and cared for, residents and staff alike.

the tree with their favourite decorations that have special meaning. l Music is one of those memories that is first to form and last to leave and even if the person has trouble speaking, they may be able to hum along. Play their favourite Christmas tune or traditional songs. l Perhaps ask about their happy Christmas memories or dig out some old photos. l Let the person with dementia guide you, you don’t have to stick to a tradition just for the sake of it, instead accept that things may look a little different this year.

We speak to our families on a regular basis, and Christmas is no different, but during Covid we have been ensuring that we keep in contact with families who have been unable to see their families in our home. It is important to let families know what we have planned, what changes may affect the usual routine. If you are caring for individuals with dementia in the community this year, here are some recommendations to help you.

Christmas food and drink

Changes to routine Try and keep things as close to the usual routine as usual, and plan ahead for any changes, asking friends or neighbours for help. l If the person with dementia is taking any medication, ensure that they have enough to get through the festive period. Remember that getting repeat prescriptions may be difficult during public holidays, and even more so during the pandemic so try and plan in advance. l If your house becomes busy on Christmas day, it may be helpful to have a quiet area for the person, although during Covid-19 this might be easier to manage! l

Festive memories For a person with dementia, Christmas can be overwhelming, so try to involve them with some memories. Look at old photos to bring back the past, as well as involving them with some of their favourite yuletide activities, such as baking cookies or decorating

For many people this is a special part of Christmas. The person with dementia may be used to cooking, but no longer able to take on that responsibility. For people in the later stages of dementia, eating and drinking can be challenging. Pigs in blankets, stuffing, Yorkshire puds, even Brussel sprouts – a Christmas dinner is a truly wonderful thing, but all those extras soon add up to a mountainous plate of food. Bear in mind that a heaving plate can be daunting for someone who may have difficulties eating. Dr Bike 2020 Dr Bike got off to a promising start in March, with a really busy session outside Seaford Police Station. Little did we know what was waiting around the corner. By June it looked like the pandemic was calming down and some sort of normality would return with a relaxing of restrictions and the ‘Rule of Six’. Four keen members of the Dr Bike team met at the Big Park Peacehaven with a view to seeing if Dr Bike could safely restart. A COVID-19 secure working system was devised and a specific risk assessment produced. Safety for the team was enhanced by the purchase of equipment to mark off the area for the team to work in, and enhanced ‘front of house’ teams did the meet and greet and disinfected the bikes before and after the work had been carried out. On 18th July we were blessed with great weather and restarted back at the Big Park Peacehaven, with priority given to key workers. This was a great success. Seaford Police Station was too compact to be made COVID-19 secure, so a new site was needed. After having a conversation with Nicola who runs Pappacinos at the Big Park, and the news that she and her team were taking on the Salts café, we asked would she also

be happy for us to also work alongside her at the Salts. Thanks to her help and several emails to Seaford Town Council we were up and running at the Salts. We also had a conversation with Cllr Lesley Boniface with regards to finding a suitable site in Newhaven, so we could introduce a 3rd Dr Bike to the Calendar. The positive attitude from Cllr Boniface was amazing and she put us in contact with Cllr Ken Dry, who gave Dr Bike a number of possible sites to operate from. After we attended a meeting with Cllr Ken Dry and the Management team at Tates Paradise Park, Dr Bike is now up and running from this prestigious site. Dr Bike would like thank Vanessa and her team at Paradise Park for their incredible support. We had a number of bikes donated. Once given safety checks and any repairs needed completed, these were sold by club members, with the proceeds going to the Club’s Charity, Seaford Downs Syndrome and Special Needs Support Group. Even with eight sessions cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions, the Dr Bike team have checked over 120 bikes, carried out simple maintenance and repairs to get them out of sheds or garages and back in use, and raised £1,000 for our chosen charity. So from the doom and gloom at the end of March, we at Dr Bike have had many positive comments from the public after keeping them cycling. All of the team have thoroughly enjoyed their mornings at the Dr Bike sessions, showing once again a lot of fun can be had helping others get back into cycling. Stay safe everyone and Dr Bike will hopefully be back as soon as we are permitted.

seaford U3A News As the dark nights draw in and our activity outdoors diminishes, attention turns to good old-fashioned table games. Seaford U3A runs four groups of such pastimes, Scrabble, Bridge, Canasta and Mah Jong. Most will need no introduction to readers and really are probably better played than written about – but here goes! Scrabble, which has been around since 1938, could perhaps be described as a ‘make-your-own-crossword’ game. It can be played with two to four players who use tiles with a single letter on to make interlocking words reading either right to left or downwards in a column. Words must be included in a standard dictionary which can cause trouble for players with more vivid imaginations. One hundred and fifty million sets have been sold worldwide and Seaford U3A group is one of

Thinly slice the 2 clementines to use as a garnish. STEP 2 To serve, put a clementine slice into each frosty glass. Fill almost halfway with the chilled jug mixture, then open the bottle of fizz and top up the glasses.

Canasta is probably less well known. It is hard to beat the words of the Seaford U3A group leader: ‘A brilliant game played by two players or more. Once played and you’re hooked. Can be frustrating!’ This game was invented in Uruguay in 1939 and reached a peak of popularity in the 1950s in the US and in the UK. There are still many clubs and leagues in many countries. The game has its roots in Rummy but is played with two full packs of playing cards and has special scoring. Seaford U3A group is strictly social – no big leagues here. Probably the least well known table game is Mah Jong, a game which has spread worldwide since the 1920s, having been played in China for many years, perhaps centuries before. It is played with tiles showing Chinese characters and is described as a game of skill, strategy and calculation. In the Far East the outcome of games can be the subject of heavy betting, but not in Seaford U3A! When the group started it grew quickly until at the time of Lockdown – there were regularly seven tables of players. The group leader says: ‘there is a new vocabulary too.You will hear cries of Pung! Kong! Chow! Fishing! We Twitter the Sparrows between each game, and we play hands called Lily of the Valley, Four Blessings, Hitler’s Blunder. It is a game endlessly interesting and still evolving’. Each new player is mentored so that it is not quite so daunting for the complete beginner.

The idea of this game is to retrieve the Christmas item asked for by the host, in the fastest t t time ti possible and bring it back to the virtual party to display on screen. Remember you maybe ask to explain the item you picked – so no cheating!!!! The first person back with a suitable item wins the round. You can play up to 10 rounds remember to keep score and the winner is the person who has been the fastest the most amount of times.

Bridge is probably the next best known of the table games, the game becoming popular in the 1920s. The basis of it is that two competing pairs of players at a table bid to make a ‘contract’ to take so many tricks whilst the opposing pair tries to stop them succeeding. There is scope for competitiveness as the film actor Omar Sharif (of ‘Doctor Zhivago’ film fame) showed most effectively when he became a world-class player. However at Seaford U3A the 16 participating members play strictly social Bridge and make it a social occasion.

Happy gaming!

Why we hang Stockings?

And other odd Christmas traditions… Christmas is all about traditions, but why do we hang stockings, eat chocolate logs and drink eggnog (why would anyone drink eggnog?!)

Stocking: Noddy Holder belting out, ‘Are you

hanging up your stocking on the wall?’ is a Christmas tradition in itself. There’s no official explanation of why we hang socks up for Santa though. It probably derives from a tradition of leaving out hay-filled shoes on 5th December, the eve of St Nicholas’ feast day. Children would wake to discover that the hay they left for St Nick’s donkey had been replaced with treats or coins.

Snacks for Santa: Whether it’s milk and

a chocolate digestive or sherry and mince pie, when we leave goodies for Father Christmas we’re possibly participating in a tradition that some scholars date back to ancient Norse mythology! According to legend, Odin had an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. Kids would leave treats for Sleipnir, hoping that Odin would favour them with gifts in return.

The Yule Log:

Yule logs also predate Christianity. As part of winter solstice celebrations, Gaels and Celts burned logs decorated with holly, ivy, and pinecones to cleanse themselves of the past year and welcome the next one. The practice changed over time and eventually edible representations of the log appeared, which is why we eat chocolate logs today!

Eggnog:

Surely the most revolting of traditions. However, historians agree that ‘nog’ was probably inspired by a medieval drink called ‘posset’, a milky drink made with eggs, milk, and sometimes figs or sherry. These were all pricey ingredients, so it was a bit of a status symbol to offer it to guests. No one seems to know for sure why it’s called ‘nog’, but it maybe from the old word ‘noggin’, which was slang for a wooden cup.

Mistletoe: This was associated with fertility

and vitality by Celtic Druids because it blossomed even during the most frigid winters. Quite how we got from that to kissing under the mistletoe is a mystery, but we do know that it began in the 18th Century and started with guests kissing the hand of their host under the mistletoe, then became progressively more personal over the decades that followed!

Advent calendars:

centuries-old tradition but although the songs go back hundreds of years, visiting neighbours to bid them good luck and good cheer by singing for them didn’t happen until the Victorian era.

The modern advent calendar, with its little doors containing sweets or small gifts, began with Gerhard Lang in the early 1900s. His inspiration was a calendar that his mother made for him when he was a child, featuring 24 coloured pictures attached to a piece of cardboard.

Evergreen decorations: Before

Christmas cards: In these days of

Carolling: You might suppose this is a

Christianity people decorated their homes with evergreens in the winter as a reminder that spring would return. Christians adopted the tradition and decorated evergreen trees with apples to represent the Garden of Eden. The practice really took off when the public learned that Queen Victoria had a decorated Christmas tree as a nod to her German husband’s heritage.

126

high postage costs, texts and emails, plus more environmental awareness, this tradition may be at risk of dying out. Christmas cards are a surprisingly recent tradition anyway, with the first formal card only hitting shelves in 1843. Tracey Anderson
