Councillor Rodney Reed Elected Mayor of Seaford The Town Council is pleased to announce that Councillor Rodney Reed has been elected as the Mayor of Seaford for the 2020-2021 municipal year. Councillor Reed was voted in as Mayor at the recent Annual Meeting of the Council held virtually on 21st May 2020. At the meeting, Councillor Reed thanked outgoing Mayor Councillor Nazish Adil for her service to the town. Cllr Reed said on his appointment ‘I am honoured and humbled to have been appointed Mayor with the unanimous support of the Council. I look forward to working cooperatively with all Councillors for the good of our town, and in being part of the town emerging from the current restrictions and being successful again in business and supportive in community’. At the same meeting, Councillor Jean Cash was appointed as Deputy Mayor of Seaford. Councillor Cash is well known in the town for her teaching career at Seaford Head School, which included being one of the Deputy Head Teachers. Councillor Cash looks forward to working closely with the Mayor in supporting the Town Council and community. Due to COVID-19, the usual ceremonial handing over of the Chains of Office could not take place at the meeting and instead Past Mayor Cllr Nazish Adil and both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor arranged an innovative, socially distanced handover in the days following. This included a traditional announcement from the Town Crier of Seaford, Peter White, at St Leonard’s Church lychgate and the video of which can be found on the Mayor of Seaford’s Facebook page. Councillor and Mrs Reed arrived in Seaford from Cornwall by way of Birmingham and Dhaka. Councillor Reed has been Managing Director of several companies, including one he inaugurated in Birmingham and another in Dhaka. Before his retirement to Seaford and in recent years his work has been as a Sustainability Consultant, working on pollution prevention in the textile and

4

leather processing sectors. During his time in Seaford he and his wife have become members of the Seaford Baptist Church. He has also represented Seaford Town Council on the outside bodies Plastic Free Seaford and Tree Wardens Group. Councillor Reed is the outgoing President of the Martello Rotary Club, his Rotary experience dates from 1983. Councillor Reed reports that his experience of Seaford has been of a warm, welcoming, lively community. The town’s situation between the sea and the Downs has made a Cornishman feel very much at home with the smell and sound of the sea and Seaford’s special feature, the sea ‘breezes’. Approached by several councillors, Councillor Reed agreed to be put forward for election as Mayor, hoping to be able to encourage co-operative working in the Town Council for the good of the community and the business sector. Councillor Reed has made it clear that the Town Council has an excellent team of very capable officers, and he intends to make it his priority to enable councillors and officers to discharge their differing roles and responsibilities cooperatively. Mrs Ann Reed will support the Mayor as his Consort (pictured right). Mrs Reed is a member of the Rotary Club of Seaford and Inner Wheel Club of Seaford. Arriving in Seaford in 2017 Mrs Reed enjoys singing with the Seaford Choral Society and is a Member of the U3A Orchestra. Councillor Reed is delighted that Rev Andy Machin, Minister of Seaford Baptist Church, accepted his invitation to be Mayor’s Chaplain and looks forward to a Civic Service and later in the year a Carol Service at Seaford Baptist Church, perhaps virtually and hopefully ‘face to face’. Councillor Reed is keen to be part of the work enabling the town to emerge from the COVID-19 lockdown. He looks forward to the Town Council’s facilities and services fully reopening, to businesses reopening and re-generating, and to the excellent community spirit evident in the COVID-19 situation continuing as vibrant community life. Being appointed the Mayor of Seaford during the

Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers

COVID-19 pandemic and social restrictions means that Councillor Reed will chair ‘virtual’ Town Council meetings. It might be the turn of the year before councillors can meet ‘face to face’ in the Council Chamber. Civic engagements for the Mayor will likewise be ‘virtual’ rather than ‘face to face’. Councillor Reed looks forward to the challenge of chairing Town Council business and to being involved in civic life in a socially-distanced era. His extensive experience in the business and not for profit’ sectors will be an advantage in developing new ways to work, as will his local authority experience from his earlier career in Birmingham. Councillor Reed has not chosen a charity for his term in office and intends to hold discussions with the charity and voluntary sector across the town, to find out what would be most helpful for them in getting back onto a sound financial basis. According to Councillor Reed ‘not only is “wind our strength” but our community is also our strength!’. Councillor Reed looks forward to receiving invitations, through the Mayor’s Secretary, to visit community groups, businesses, and social organisations as soon as ‘normal civic life’ becomes possible.

Photography without Frontiers raises funds for NHS Local photographer joins national initiative, Photography without Frontiers, to thank and raise funds for our NHS. To date photographers across the country have donated to raise more than £2.5K to support our NHS, and they’ve only just started taking portraits! The launch of ‘Photographers without Frontiers’ is an exciting national initiative raising much-needed funds for the NHS staff and volunteers. With everything that has been going on over the last few months, UK photographers want to give something back to the NHS, not just in Sussex, but across the UK. As a group, the photographers feel the NHS deserve recognition for the hard work and suffering they go through, especially during these difficult times. The ‘Photography without Frontiers’ initiative provides the photographers with a vehicle to show their appreciation. and shows that whilst social distancing is in place, a portrait can bridge the distance and time whilst missing our loved ones. Photographers have already donated £2.5K and are now asking people to make a minimum donation of £10 through the JustGiving page direct to ‘NHS Charities Together’. In return for their donation, a photographer promises to gift a free portrait session to provide them with a web-sized image to share online showing their support for the NHS. And... the photographer will add another £5 donation of their own money to the JustGiving page once the photography session has taken place. Local photographer Marie-Louise Tibbles (top) who manages G F Sinclair in Seaford, has joined the initiative and is ready to take photos of you and your loved ones in order to show your support for the NHS. For more details about ‘Photography without Frontiers’, and to make a donation, please visit the web page:

Seaford Rotary – Tackling the challenges of lockdown July 2020 hails the beginning of the next Rotary year, with a new President elected to take Seaford Rotary forward. The challenges that faced us early in 2019/20 are very different from those we faced at the end of the Rotary year and as we go into 2020/21. Indeed they have been transformational. Fellowship is an important part of Rotarian ethos, and because of the restrictions imposed regarding social distancing and Lockdown, the Seaford Rotary Wednesday meetings could not take place in their usual venue at Blatchington golf club. COVID-19 thus forced us to become innovative and move with the times testing our ability to adapt, discovering the power of Zoom which enabled us to connect in ways we would not have thought possible six months ago. We have met virtually as a group to conduct business and discuss projects, as well as catch up with news on how we have all been coping with the challenges of Lockdown. It has showed us that we can be flexible, as well as accessible, opening up opportunities for us to connect more widely and even internationally. By meeting online we have enabled members to sample new technology and begin a journey of discovery of previously unforeseen opportunities, with members joining us online from as far afield as Portugal and Tenerife. Wherever there is a signal, members can attend meetings, and we hope soon to link up online with Rotarians in Bangladesh where we have connections through current members. We have also been able to host guest speakers, with talks on subjects as diverse as the history of the Fitzgerald family and the establishment of the Almshouses in Seaford, to the work of the important national charity CarersUK, with whom Rotary Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) have just announced a 12 month partnership. CarersUK is the national membership charity for carers. Carers Week was from 8th to 14th June and the theme for Carers Week 2020 was Making Caring Visible. There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. They are looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, or who needs extra

10

help as they grow older. As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, many carers have been increasingly taking on more. Caring impacts on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work. As carers are experiencing even more challenging circumstances this year, it is vitally important that the contribution they make to their local communities is recognised, and that we support them in managing their own health and wellbeing. This year, Rotary GB&I will therefore be working together with CarersUK to help make life better for unpaid carers by raising awareness of the challenges they face and offering support. One of the other challenges we have faced is how COVID-19 has had a major impact on fundraising by many charities supporting good causes. With our key fundraising events such as the monthly car boot sales cancelled until further notice, Seaford Rotary has been similarly impacted. But as soon as we are able, we will be back out and about raising funds to support the community. We will also continue to work with Seahaven Foodbank (as we have throughout Lockdown) supporting residents of the Seaford and Newhaven area. One of the positives that has come about from the pandemic is that 750,000 people became NHS Volunteer responders. Many had not been aware of the values of community, selflessly helping others, for little reward other than pride and personal satisfaction. It is clear that post-COVID-19 there will be more vulnerable people who will need our help as this country restabilises. Rotary will continue to work to provide a better future for our community. If you have discovered the value of volunteering, and would like to better understand the value of Rotary, look at the website at: www.rotarygbi.org or type Seaford Rotary into your search engine to see our website, or just check out our Facebook page to learn more about what we do within the community and helping those in need. Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail 2020 Later this month, 25th and 26th July, would have seen the annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail take place. Sadly, along with many other events planned this summer, a decision was taken back in April to cancel this year’s event, due to the coronavirus situation. Trail organiser, Geoff Stonebanks, tells us: ‘I contacted all the garden owners, some of whom were willing to consider opening, but many, including me, felt it was probably best to cancel the event and avoid owners going to a lot of trouble to get their gardens ready, only for it to be possibly cancelled at the last minute.’ Geoff and his Driftwood Fundraising Group have raised over £84,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in recent years and he is keen to try and raise some funds this year too, despite the current issues. So far in 2020 he has raised in excess of £2,000 for the charity, well down on the £14,000 he handed over in 2019. Never defeated though, he has arranged for some garden owners to film short virtual tours of their gardens in the run up to the event. These will be posted to YouTube and accessed through the trail web page, www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk. There are several there to view now, including a short tour of the Albion St Community Garden in Brighton and a container garden in Telscombe Cliffs, as well as one of Geoff ’s garden too. More will follow through the month. Readers may have seen the short film of Geoff ’s garden last month on ITV Meridian News which included some drone footage too. If you missed it, check out the link on the home page of his web site to view again: www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk.

14

Geoff also has the support of Macmillan’s Chief Executive, Lynda Thomas, (pictured left with Geoff at the Horizon Centre in Brighton before the current restrictions) who has also filmed a short piece in support of the event, saying how vital the funds from the trail are to the charity. This year TV gardener, Jim Buttress, was to have opened the event and trail Patron, Christine Walkden,

who did the honours in 2019 was so disappointed when she heard the event had been cancelled, she too decided to film a short piece in support of the event. She can be seen above in the Walled Garden in Bishopstone, last year, with owners Tim and Karen Rayner.

You can watch both these short films on the web page too, and maybe they and the short garden tours may inspire you to consider donating to the events’ Just Giving page in favour of Macmillan Cancer Support. Just go to the trail web page and click on the red outlined box at the top of the page and this will take you to the Just Giving page. It is such a shame this year as there were to have been four new gardens in Seaford joining the trail. Windover in Chyngton Lane North, Burford in Cuckmere Road, 18 Hill Rise and Whiterow Cottage in Bishopstone Village. Let’s hope they all sign up to open again in 2021. There is talk of a couple of trail gardens opening up as a one-off, in the autumn, so keep an eye on the website to see if it materialises.

Sussex Arts Collective COLLECTIONS 2020 The Cuckmere Room Crypt Gallery, Church Street, Seaford Due to COVID-19 Collections 2020 exhibitions have been cancelled until further notice.

Collections 2020

Last edition I mentioned we were hopeful that we would be able to resume our residency at the Crypt Gallery in July. Sadly The Crypt Gallery trustees have had to make the agonising but perfectly right decision to keep the venue closed throughout the summer. The good news though is that, if all things go well, the gallery will reopen for business in the first week of September. This will coincide with the rearranged ARTWAVE 2020 festival. So, make a date in your diary for Saturday 5th September. Once more we will be able celebrate the wealth of creative talent you have come to expect by showcasing our broadest range of quality art and craft work yet over the two fabulous exhibitions spaces. This month’s feature highlights one of our distinguished members, who works in one of the oldest and most time-honoured traditional skills.

Collections 2020 SPOTLIGHT: Tess Deverill Tess started weaving in the late 1970s, following in her mother’s footsteps who took up weaving late in life after Tess and her brothers had left home. Unfortunately she was unable to achieve her potential sadly passing away soon after starting a course at Eastbourne. Inspired by her mother, Tess decided to join an adult education class herself to learn spinning and weaving, and discovered the tutor Marion Boniface whose

mother coincidently attended the same classes. Having travelled to the Lake District to fetch her mother’s floor loom from her brother she spun and wove her first length of basic cloth. She was shown how to weave using just fleece that had been ‘carded’ a mechanical process that disentangles, cleans and intermixes fibre. She found that you can produce a design ‘free style’ by just using the warp to bind the fleece into place and putting colour wherever you wanted. This way of working gave her the freedom to weave in a way more akin to painting, which motivated her to develop her own unique approach. Returning her mother’s homemade loom she obtained her own Harris loom; a much more sturdy loom highly suitable for rugs. She joined the East Sussex Guild of Weaver,s Spinners and Dyers, along with her friends from the class. The monthly meetings and talks she found extremely inspirational, and being affiliated to the National Guild she has been able to attend their biannual summer schools which has enthused her further to try and master many different techniques. Over the years she has found that this ancient craft has led her to an endless number of new discoveries. Colour is something she loves to play with and courses in Kendal with a well known weaver, Susan Foster, taught her to Bound Weave; a weft-faced weave where the pattern is controlled simply by what colour you are weaving with. Many of her rugs are woven this way, which enables her to model and blend colour along the length of the rug. After all these years she still gains a great deal of satisfaction starting from washing, carding and spinning fleeces from scratch and finally weaving them into rugs. They are indeed not just functional pieces, they are true works of art.

Notes from Seaford Museum The last few months have been strange to put it mildly. We, along with everyone else of course, had very little notice that we had to close our doors. Our duty to protect the artefacts and assets of the museum led to us rushing around trying to find material to act as dustsheets – we always knew that the old flags may come in handy sometime! We soon realised that we also needed to move everything which would deteriorate from upstairs into the two air conditioned rooms downstairs. Accordingly all our books, booklets, soft toys, fabrics of all descriptions found themselves in a new home for the duration.

We have had to do regular checks of the museum which is an ancient monument and, when possible, have opened the doors to improve the throughflow of air to lessen the rate of deterioration of our artefacts and assets.

Having had to cancel so many of our Golden Anniversary events, we did manage to give our lovely new bunting its first outing for the VE Day weekend and then again for Sussex Day which was lovely to see. So much work went into their creation, 144 flags of each colour, red, white and blue, and we were very lucky to have such talented and industrious volunteers. Many thanks to Lynn and her helpers. We have now started to do some maintenance work which we would have problems doing when we are open, making sure our volunteers observe the social distancing rules. We are also taking advantage of being closed to install more dehumidifiers in the museum which should significantly reduce the humidity levels hence reducing the rate of deterioration of artefacts, always a problem in old buildings, particularly those on the beach! We will be opening a new exhibition area in the moat itself. This is currently in the process of being created. We are hoping that by the time this Seaford Scene hits the streets we will be open again, but it may well be later in the year. We very much look forward to welcoming everyone back and finally being able to take down our Yellow Jack flag!

Through Lockdown and beyond

We have been delighted by the response to the Living History Project so far! As with any ongoing project, the more young people that contribute the better! We want to be able to gather a very wide range of young people’s experience of Lockdown. Every few weeks we send out a set of questions, tasks or a diary. So far we have covered: Entertainment in Lockdown, A Day in the Life of, and Education in Lockdown. More of our Talking Points are planned, along with an exhibition as soon as it is safe to do so! Please encourage your young person, aged from 10 – 16 to contribute.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Last Minute Artists On-line directory Last Minute Artists, the group that normally holds exhibitions at the Crypt Gallery in Church Street, is setting up an on-line directory on its website so that people who are perhaps looking to buy art or commission work can find members and contact them direct. Meanwhile be assured that members of this go-ahead group are taking advantage of these strange socially distanced times by locking down in their studios and coming up with all sorts of creative ideas, ranging from 3D sculptures and edgy felting to ventures into pottery and a coronavirus-affected lifestyle. The group is looking forward to holding more shows as soon as it is safe to do so, but in the meantime do look at their website on https://lastminuteartists.weebly.com/ Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Perfect Coconut Ice Cream

Cool, creamy and delicious Preparation time: 15 mins. Cooking time: 10 mins plus chilling and freezing time. Serves 6

Ingredients

1 x 400ml can coconut milk, 150ml double cream, 1 x 160g can coconut cream, 50g golden caster sugar, 4 large egg yolks, 25g desiccated coconut, toasted

Method

Whisk the sugar and the egg yolks in a bowl until thick and creamy. Pour the coconut milk, double cream and coconut cream into a saucepan and heat until it almost reaches boiling point. Pour this coconut milk mixture in a slow stream over the egg yolks and sugar, whisking constantly. Rinse out the saucepan (important to stop any burning and tainting of the ice cream) and return to a low heat. Pour in the custard mixture and stir in the desiccated coconut. Continue to stir constantly for 5-10 mins until the custard thickens slightly and you can trace a line

28

through it with a wooden spoon. Pour into a bowl and cover the surface of the custard with cling film... to prevent a skin forming), allow to cool, then chill for 30 mins. At this point you can use your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, transfer the chilled custard to a small freezer-safe container with a lid and freeze for 1 hr, then use a fork or electric whisk to really churn through the ice cream to break up the ice crystals so that the mixture is the same consistency all the way through. Pop it back into the freezer for another 2-3 hrs, whisking it about every half hour, then cover the surface with a sheet of cling film and freeze with the lid on until as firm as ice cream. Take out of the freezer 10 mins before serving so it’s easy to scoop. Enjoy!

Seaford Mayor announces initiative to support all local charities! In these unprecedented times the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Rodney Reed sets out how he would like to help to support local charities in Seaford, and national charities, which provide services directly in Seaford. It is usual for a Mayor of Seaford to nominate one or two local charities to be the Mayoral Charities for their term in office. As a Mayor’s chosen charity, any funds that are raised throughout the year are presented to the charity at the end of the Mayor’s term at the Town Forum. Being nominated as a Mayor’s Charity is also a platform to significantly raise the profile and public awareness of the charity and has been known to have a long-lasting positive impact in helping to boost fundraising capabilities going forwards. However, at the start of Cllr Reed’s term in office he felt that during these unprecedented times, all local charities are suffering and have had their incomes and fundraising abilities curtailed. This is obviously impacting the capability of being able to deliver services in Seaford to the worthy causes they all support. It is with this in mind that The Mayor is not choosing a single charity but is instead launching an initiative to give all local charities a platform to help boost public awareness of their causes, and throughout the year highlight them on Seaford Town Council’s website and social media channels. It is also hoped, when it is safe to do so and adhering Government COVID-19 guidance, that Mayor’s fundraising events might be hosted in which all local charities can participate and

raise funds for themselves. This will be confirmed as and when it is possible to do so, to help charities get back onto a secure financial footing.

‘I spent several years working for a national children’s charity and for some years was one of the trustees of a national grant-making trust, so, I am aware that fundraising can be a competitive affair and that smaller local charities may be disadvantaged when facing larger charities employing professional fundraisers. As soon as social distancing requirements are eased, it is inevitable that local charities, voluntary organisations, and community groups will need to fundraise in Seaford at almost the same time. My hope is to be able to give many groups an opportunity to ‘set out their stall’ on the Town Council’s website and our Facebook pages, and to set up actual stalls to raise funds for themselves at a Mayor’s charity support event’, Councillor Rodney Reed. In the meantime, the Mayor is asking all local charities or any regional or national charity that actively helps the Seaford community, and wish to be involved in the Mayor’s initiative, to make themselves known to the Town Council as soon as possible. Please send in details of your charity, with permission to use the following information, to: mayors.secretary@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk Include: Name of Charity, Charity Number, Logo, Charity Website and/or social media, 1 or 2 photographs highlighting the charitable work, Contact Name at the Charity and job title, Contact Phone Number and Email address. More details will the published on the Seaford Town Council Website and Facebook pages in due course, so please do follow and sign up for updates. www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk Facebook – Seaford Town Council Facebook – Mayor of Seaford Note: Any donations received for the Mayor’s Charities as is customary will be held and split between all the charities that have applied to be involved in the Mayor’s initiative at the end of the municipal year.

Seaford Stone Trail As regular cyclists to Newhaven and back since Lockdown, Lesley and I admired the painted stones trail that has been growing from the Newhaven end towards Seaford. Both Artists and lovers of getting people involved and enjoying Art, we decided to start a Seaford trail. We chose Bonningstedt Parade as an ideal venue. So we are now looking for local budding artists, young people particularly, to get painting some stones with your own unique designs, and add them to our display.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Covid-19 The coronavirus pandemic has meant that hospices have been more needed than ever and this has certainly been the case for St Wilfrid’s Hospice Eastbourne. So what has life been like in our local hospice for the last few months? From the early days of Lockdown St Wilfrid’s geared itself up to take more patients. Its Inpatient Unit has been operating at capacity, receiving patients from the hospital and the community, including some with the coronavirus. One such patient was able to return home recently after several weeks of St Wilfrid’s specialist care, a wonderful outcome. Community Nurses have continued to visit patients throughout for pain and symptom control, along with regular phone calls. Calls to the 24/7 Nurse Line have been up around 15%. The Care at Home team has been busier than ever, providing personal care in the home. In all cases hospice staff wear PPE (top photo) when supporting patients either in the hospice or at home. While St Wilfrid’s has not been able to run its usual therapy programmes in the hospice, they have continued to provide support by phone and video conference. The team has created videos which are available on the hospice website and they have also been running live group sessions online. Telephone befriending is offered to patients and so far 75 people have been matched with befrienders. The hospice anticipated there would be a great need for bereavement support and has expanded the number of counsellors. They are able to offer a bereavement counselling service to any family within the catchment

The St Wilfrid’s Community Group page has brought together patients, families, staff and volunteers to share good news, lovely photos, links and ideas. It currently has over 670 members – just search for it on Facebook and click to join. The lockdown meant the hospice lost a lot of its volunteers. A core group who were still able to volunteer have gone above and beyond in giving their time, supplemented by returning college students and non-clinical staff helping in the laundry, cleaning and at mealtimes. It has been a wonderful team effort. St Wilfrid’s fundraising programme has been badly hit by the lockdown. The charity devised new ideas for how people can provide support and an emergency appeal was launched. Further details about all of these, including how to support through fundraising or volunteering, are on the hospice website: stwhospice.org.

St Wilfrid’s Chief Executive, David Scott-Ralphs (photo left), said: ‘It’s been a privilege for all of us at St Wilfrid’s, staff and volunteers, to serve our community during this period. We knew that we would need to step up a gear and I’m incredibly proud of what the whole team has achieved. In one way or another we are typically supporting up to 200 patients on any given day. Thank you to everyone who has continued to support us.’

Seaford Afternoon Flower Club Despite not being able to meet as a Club, we are trying to keep our members in touch through regular emails and phone calls. We have continued to have our monthly competition, this time entitled ‘Tea Time’ and many of our members sent us photographs of their design for distribution. Some of the contributions are attached and I am sure you will agree that we have some tempting entries.

10 Lindfield Ave, Seaford BN25 4DY

Thankfully, the weather has been superb so that those of us who are lucky enough to have gardens have been able to spend a good deal of time outdoors, and most plants and flowers are looking splendid, although some have needed a bit of watering! We are looking forward to the future when we can resume our monthly meetings and enjoy a real cup of tea together.

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club With no end in sight to the end of Lockdown, the Club might not be able to open for a while. In the meantime, members have been busy filling their spare time on their collections. The following is a short article from Tony Hope explaining his interest in the stamps and postal history of New Zealand.

THE LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD –

as the Māori People call New Zealand (NZ)

So why do I collect philatelic items of this beautiful country 12,000 miles away? From 1957 until 1967 I served all over New Zealand and in Malaya with the Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps. I met my wife to be 3,000ft up WAIOURU in mid North Island and both my children are New Zealanders by birth.

Hence my NZ collection always brings back happy memories of these days many years ago. For example, when the largest narrow gauge (3ft 5in) engine in the world, a ‘Ja’ class (above) would haul the night express into Waiouru Station, when as duty officer I had to meet incoming troops at 2am – or when on service with the NZ Territorial Force in the South Island at lake Tekapo with the magnificent Southern Alps as background (right), Mt Cook, 12,000ft. NZ troops served with distinction in many wars. The Boer War (left), in the 1914-18 with the A.N.Z.A.C’s at Gallipoli (right), and the brave Māori Battalion were honoured with a special commemorative stamp (below). A well as fighting in the 1939-45 war, NZ also supplied ‘the mother country’ with vital food supplies (below).

wrong turn in life when, as a family in 1967, we decided to return to the UK and I re-joined the British Army.

Even to this day, now 85, I still think that we probably took a

‘With its flax and its ferns and rare cabbage tree. Its freedom – its blessings – New Zealand for me’. (John Blair) If you have any queries relating to stamps or post cards please contact the club secretary David Manthorpe 01323492433, email: david.manthorpe10@gmail.com. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it. To advertise in Seaford Scene please call 01273 710793 or email fran@seafordscene.co.uk

Citizens Advice Going back to work concerns The company I work for is starting to look at reopening later in the summer. I am anxious, despite not having any health issues. I’m going to wear a mask, but not all the customers may do so. I used to take the bus to work, I don’t have a car and it’s too far to cycle. I’m not even sure if my kids will be back at school by then! The thought of returning to work is keeping me awake at night. Do I have to go back to work? The short answer to your question is yes, you do need to comply with any reasonable management request to return to work. The key here is ‘reasonable.’ The government has published specific guidance for different businesses on the steps they can take to minimise coronavirus

transmission. If you don’t think they’re complying, or if you believe they are putting your health at risk, you should talk to them about this. They should listen to your concerns about using public transport. You could, for instance, ask to travel at a quieter time of day. The government has said that if you’re unable to work because of childcare issues your employer can continue to furlough you. We suggest approaching this as a problem that you and your boss can solve together. If you are still concerned, you could report your employer to the Health and Safety Executive. You should also get advice about your legal rights in this situation.

What is good for our heart is also good for our brain Nial Joyce of leading dementia care centre, Clifden House, Seaford looks at latest WHO Dementia Guidelines. ‘The rise in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is alarming and is expected to double every 20 years, from 47 million people in 2015 to 75 million in 2030 and 131 million in 2050. This means that in the next 30 years, the number of people with dementia is expected to triple (and) we need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia,’ WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, MSc, PhD, said in a press release. Key aspects to reducing the risk of cognitive decline as outlined by the WHO include:

Physical Activity

Physical activity should be recommended to adults with normal cognition to reduce the risk for cognitive decline.

Smoking

Tobacco cessation should be offered to adults who use tobacco, as it may reduce the risk for cognitive decline and dementia in addition to providing other health benefits.

Diet

A healthy, balanced diet should be recommended to all adults based on WHO recommendations on healthy diet. Vitamins B and E, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and complex multivitamin supplementation should not be recommended to reduce the risk for cognitive decline and/or dementia.

Alcohol

Reducing or ceasing hazardous and harmful drinking can help reduce the risk for cognitive decline and/or dementia, in addition to other health benefits.

58

The scientific evidence gathered for these Guidelines confirms what we have suspected for some time, that is what is good for our heart is also good for our brain. Dementia carers are very often family members who need to make considerable adjustments to their family and professional lives to care for their loved ones. To help, WHO has created iSupport, an online training program providing carers of people with dementia with advice on overall management of care, dealing with behaviour changes, and how to look after their own health. When caring for someone with dementia gets too much there is always the option of short-term respite care. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre offers both respite and long-term residential care. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford has been delivering exceptional care in Sussex for 50 years. As a leader in specialist dementia care it aims to facilitate each person to continue to live a fulfilling and active life with privacy, dignity and security.

U3A News We have all faced a difficult few weeks recently, although Seaford has probably been one of the country’s better places to be in Lockdown. Those of us who have been able to leave our homes have had the beach and the town’s green spaces to walk in, and the flowers in people’s gardens to admire with bees and butterflies. The town’s inhabitants have on the whole been very considerate for the health of others. The U3A’s face-to-face events have come to a halt and it is difficult to see how they can restart in the near future. There is however some light at the end of the tunnel with a gradual easing of restrictions. With some careful and inventive thought about social distancing it might be possible to put together a tentative programme starting in September. Some of Seaford U3A’s groups have made a valiant effort to continue activities online. There is a virtual Spanish group for ‘almost beginners’, a virtual French

conversation group via Zoom and a virtual Art Group. In the Art Group, members do their paintings, and compare and receive helpful comments online. One hopes they will be helpful in these rather sober times. On the national U3A website, which is accessible to non-members as well as members, there are a number of other interesting ideas to keep you occupied. Click on the section ‘Keep Learning’ to find out. A weekly quiz is running and the website suggests that U3As set up teams to run their own league. There is a short-story project with the possibility of seeing your story in print in the magazine. A weekly Maths Challenge is there to test the old grey matter. Entries are invited for a photo gallery online, and Bolsover and District U3A set up a VE Day website showcasing memories and personal mementoes of VE Day which you can access. You can practice Mindfulness by following a YouTube guide or brush up your computer skills with a Zoom tutorial. It seems that Zoom is the new medium of choice for virtual meetings. The birdwatchers amongst us can join a British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) project to record garden birds following a co-operation between the U3A and the BTO. With the lack of traffic during Lockdown, the sound of birdsong has become more apparent and the garden birds have perhaps become bolder with less human activity. The section ‘Made It, Make It’ on the national website has a host of lovely ideas for crafting, ranging from woodturning to crochet and is worth looking at for novelty and variety if you are interested in this. We hope that existing U3A members will renew their subscriptions when they become due at the beginning of August and that they will continue to offer support during the coming year. The national U3A website is at www.U3a.org.uk and the British Trust for Ornithology is at www.bto.org. For more information about Seaford U3A and also about its linked organisations, Sussex U3A Network (SUN) and SE U3A Region see the website www. u3asites.org.uk/seaford. A Good Read

Found By Erin Kingsley

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: you are waiting for your child to come home from school and they don’t. This is the situation that Claire and Matt found themselves in when their 11-year-old son, Evan did not come home from school after football practice. The police are called, and the search is on. Claire and Matt are torn apart by the events and as the months drift on they give up all hope of Evan coming home. But, as the title suggests, Evan is indeed found. But the boy that returns to them is not the same boy that went missing. Refusing to talk to anyone, he is withdrawn, only finding short moments of happiness and peace when visiting his grandparents on their farm. The

police try to ascertain what happened but to no avail. Until another boy goes missing. What drew me to this book is the fact that the focus is on what happened afterwards. We all watch news reports of children who are abducted and sometimes there is a happy ending. For us, as onlookers, that is where the story ends. But is it possible for a family just to pick up and carry on as if nothing happened? How on earth do you rebuild those lost moments with your child?

Ballerina Bella and the Lucky Locket by Jillian Harker

Bella loves to dance. Bella wants to be a ballerina. But there is a problem. No matter what she is doing she finds it almost impossible to concentrate as her imagination runs wild. A cat in the garden becomes an escaped tiger from the zoo. A ribbon on the floor during her ballet class becomes a mouse. And a spider swinging from its cobweb makes her think of swinging on a swing as she forgets the exercise they are supposed to be doing. Everyone is exasperated. But can Bella focus during her dance show? Can she prove herself to be the dancer she wants to be and win best dancer? This lovely picture book will enthral young dancers with wonderful illustrations showing pirouettes, jetes, and arabesques. Any dance teacher will tell you that children get distracted and this is a lovely way of helping them understand the importance of staying focused. Willow Coby

Youth charity awarded £14,500 Seaford-based The Youth Counselling Project has been granted £10,000 by the National Lottery to aid its work providing therapy for troubled students at local primary and secondary schools. The Project is also benefitting from £4,500 given by Sussex Community Foundation. The grants could not have come at a better time as Lockdown has meant local fundraising by holding events has virtually ceased at present. Meanwhile there is evidence that the need for youth counselling is mounting fast. Children’s Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield, last month asked 2,000 children aged eight to 17 whether they ever felt stressed, what it is like to feel stressed and what they do to feel less stressed. She

said: ‘Many children told us that the virus was their biggest reason for feeling stressed.’ Ms Longfield also stated that the charity Childline reported an increased demand in counselling sessions, with a Young Minds survey last month of children with a history of mental health needs showing 83% saying the pandemic had made their mental health a bit or much worse. The lack of socialising, anxiety about families’ health, school closures and a loss of routine were all contributing to their worries. The Youth Counselling Project currently makes provision for 10 sessions of therapy by appropriately trained counsellors for each of 60 young people taking part from the town’s primary schools and Seaford Head School, with each block of 10 sessions costing around £450. Of the grants by the National Lottery and Sussex Community Foundation, Project Secretary and Trustee Mairin Colleary said: ‘Local fund-raising is on hold so this is stunning.’ Fund-raising events such as pub quizzes, a barn dance and a bingo night were all due to be held in spring and early summer but there are still ways to contribute. Go on to the Project’s website at www.tycp.org.uk to see how you can donate via JustGiving, Amazon Smile and Lewes Lottery.

Town Crying under Unique Circumstances! On the 75th Anniversary of VE Day Town Criers all over the World delivered proclamations of celebration and

remembrance. Seaford’s Town Crier of 43 years, Peter White, strayed no further than the verge outside has house to give voice to a special Seaford Cry for VE Day. Because Council Meetings took place online the election of Seaford’s new Mayor Rodney Reed, his Consort Ann Reed and Deputy Mayor Jean Cash

took place out of sight of most Seafordians, so the Town Crier announced it at the Lych Gate of St Leonard’s Church. On Sussex Day, 16th June, the Mayor raised the Sussex Flags on the Lifeguards’ flagpoles at the Martello Tower Promenade, and at the Salts Recreation Ground. The Town Crier was on duty, proclaiming the official Sussex Charter Cry, and the special-to-Seaford one which always raises a smile with its amusing and topical references! These included thanks to Seaford’s Emergency Volunteers and the Food Bank. The Town Crier will also be on hand if there are eventually street celebrations for deliverance from COVID-19! Photos by Pat White from top: Deputy Mayor, Jean Cash; Seaford’s Town Crier, Peter White outside his house; Town Crier at the Lynch gate of St Leonard’s Church; Mayor Rodney Reed and Consort, Ann Reed.

Martello Rotary Seaford COVID19 has had many impacts, not only on our society, but abroad in places we do not hear about on the news every day. One of these places is Nepal, where we were planning on visiting this year to see how our club donations and support had helped the local children.

Martello Rotary were well advanced in planning for 14 members to visit Pokhara in Nepal to provide ’handson’ support to Community Training Assistance and Support (CTAS) one of our charity partners. CTAS is a UK-Registered Charity, based from Polegate, working with people in poorer countries (primarily in Nepal), who do not have the advantage of a state welfare system, and where religious and cultural practices tend to promote advantages and disadvantages between different castes. This was to have been a joint visit with both Seaford Rotary and Martello Rotary providing funding for a new clean water supply to the ‘Mahendra Higher Secondary School in the district of Lahachowk, high in the mountains above Pokhara in Nepal. The school is in a remote village and has around 450 students from the local and outlying areas. It does not have any running water or sanitation to the toilet block or kitchens. Then COVID-19 intervened. However even though our visit was unable to go ahead, we have sent the money to CTAS; and as soon as the lockdown in Nepal is ended, local CTAS volunteers and contractors will lay the pipes, install the pumps and set a water tank in

place so that the school will have drinking water and water for toilet flushing. Both Martello and Seaford Rotary Clubs provided £1,000 each, with a further £2,000 from our Rotary District in ‘match funding’ from The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) of Rotary International enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. As the charitable arm of Rotary, TRF taps into a global network of Rotarians and these grants enable Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. CTAS has already raised the remaining £500 needed for this project to be completed, and we look forward to receiving photographs of the completed project, which we will of course share with you. Martello Rotary meets on Monday evenings (at the moment by curtesy of Zoom) if you would like more information email us at : contactmartellorotary@gmail. com or text us 07984 581 784 Interested in Martello Rotary? Why the Seaford Property Market isn’t going on a Summer Holiday We’re writing this in the first week of June. It’s worth mentioning that because things can change quickly as we all do our bit to tackle COVID-19. The current situation means it’s unclear if people in the UK will be able to make their annual summer pilgrimage abroad to sunnier climes. New quarantine regulations, concern over a possible second wave of infections and the idea of having to social distance while we’re supposed to be letting our hair down have dampened many peoples’ desire to go abroad on holiday. We’re hearing from a lot of people that they won’t be venturing abroad this year. We think two things will happen because of this rise in staying at home. Firstly, expect a surge of staycations, the term used to describe a holiday within the UK. As Lockdown rules start becoming more relaxed, the consensus from travel experts is holidaying within the UK will be more popular than since the 1940s. Seaford beach looks set to be busier than ever. And we’re expecting and preparing for a lot more summer activity in the Seaford property market than usual. Traditionally the months of July and August see a lull in the property market because people are away on holiday and the kids are off from school. And when you factor in significant sporting events like the Olympics and football tournaments such as the European Championships, people’s focus moves away from buying or selling a new home. The

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

cancellations of these sporting events combine with the bigger factor of a massive reduction in summer holidays. This all means the property market in Seaford will be much more active in July and August than ever before. We’re already seeing signs we’re going to be in for a surge of activity for the rest of the year, as pent up sellers and buyers come to the market. So, if you are thinking of moving home now your summer holiday plans are on hold, please get in touch with us. We’re here to help in any way we can, well, apart from being able to guarantee you your two weeks in the sun complete with Happy Hours. But we can guarantee we’ll give you a warm (safe) welcome, five-star service and excellent local knowledge. Thanks for reading.

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford ‘Crafty Ladies’ keep busy Talented ‘Crafty Ladies’ have been busy making face masks and delivering them, observing social distancing, while fundraising for Young Carers. The face masks have been gratefully received. Scrubs have also been produced for hardworking carers and nurses in hospitals and care homes. Even though members of Inner Wheel Club of Seaford have been observing social distancing and self-isolating rules, they have continued to be very active, utilising their craft and sewing skills for the good of others. The Mayor’s Consort received her ribbon and regalia, and a storage and transport box. The Mayor’s regalia, had lost its transport box several years ago. Crafty Ladies of Seaford Inner Wheel were pleased to respond

to the newly appointed Mayor’s request for a storage and transport pouch. The lined velvetdraw string bag exceeded all expectations in terms of style and quality. Photographs of the hand-over and the draw string pouch received many positive comments when posted on Facebook. Stitched inside the pouch was an embroidered label showing it had been made with love by the Crafty Ladies, and so this delightful donated green velvet storage pouch can be used by Mayors for many years to come.

Pond flowers As Lockdown starts to lift, visitors are arriving in the village, so here is our last installment for this spring with its record-breaking sunshine and lack of rain. The garden pond has only been kept going with occasional buckets of bath water and the birds enjoy a good splash. Our local wetland plants, with their white and yellow spring flowers, are attracting insects.

Resting quietly on spinach is a brown Squash Bug Coreus marginatus (right). Having come out of hibernation, it’s ready to visit your squashes. The dead elm reported last issue has now been taken down. When debarked, it revealed the larval burrows of Elm Bark Beetle Scolytus scolytus, the carrier of Dutch Elm Disease (DED); 1 pence piece for scale (left).

While still trying to learn some botany, Ed managed to photograph some of his real love – B & Bs (Bugs & Beetles). Bogbean Menyanthes trifoliata (left) has distinctive flowers looking like hairy stars, and it’s the leaves that resemble broad beans; it’s used in making beer up North. The Yellow Flag Iris Iris

pseudacorus (right) is, however, a vigorous water iris and stands looking like little yellow flags, but watch out, it will spread.

A spark of metallic green buzzing across the lawn was a Rose Chafer Cetonia aurata (right) on landing. The young (larvae) are a gardener’s friend feeding on plant waste.

Hemlock Water-dropwort Oenanthe crocata (left) fine for insects, but as suggested by the name, poisonous to mammals.

Ancient Bark Beetle Paleoscolytus sussexensis in an equally ancient conifer from Crowborough (right). This rare fossil from the age of the dinosaurs shows that DED is comparatively modern, geologically speaking!

Common toad Bufo bufo (left) patiently waiting for an insect snack after gardening activity. We include this photo right because it’s pretty – can you name it? Answer on page 109. Biddy and Ed Jarzembowski

A thank you to local businesses I will be honest; I’ve been wondering what to write on this page for a week now. What can I really write about when we are still living in such strange times? Some people are getting their life a little bit back to ‘normal’, some going to work, some children eventually going to school or nursery and having more than one daily dose of fresh air and exercise. However, I know this is not the case for everyone. Lots of us are still staying at home, still working from the living room/kitchen/ wherever we can find peace; some are still shielding and protecting themselves and their family.

given more freedoms, whilst keeping a distance of 2m, I hope we can come together and support more of these local businesses; the beachside cafés reopening to a new norm of queues and plastic screens, the cafés that have been closed for months, the clothes shops that have had to turn to online shopping or personal shopping appointments to try and maintain their businesses.

Our town seems to have changed in the past months. It started off incredibly quiet, supermarkets had enormous queues and Seaford Head provided walks and daily exercise for many. As the weather warmed up and we saw a relaxation to the lockdown rules, the beach became packed with ‘some’ people socially distancing and others not quite managing it.

Some of us don’t want to return to the ‘normal’ we had before this, and some of us will feel great anxiety or stress at returning to work or going back into the shops, but I am sure our local businesses will continue to support us, with home delivery, take-away products and safe environments. I hope they manage to survive and, in time, thrive. By J Hanby Penn

Part of the change that I have witnessed is how some of our wonderful local businesses have changed and supported the local Seafordians; cafés turning into makeshift shops, Wynn’s appear to have really supported the gardeners of Seaford, Onneke has been delivering all her wonderful gifts and cards to help people brighten up their lives whilst at home, and the numerous food shops have also turned to home delivery to help those who really needed it. I have seen yoga teachers take their lessons online to provide a moment of calm and relaxation at home, nothing but innovative. We have also found new businesses in the local area, which have been able to use this situation to develop their business and really support the local community. I ordered my father-in-law a selection of freshly baked pies to be delivered from Newhaven. A business I never knew about which has grown out of demand from a treat delivered to home. My father-in-law was so surprised with a pie delivery. These small things have not only kept people’s spirits up but also kept people’s businesses and livelihoods going. As we come out of the enforced lockdown and are

Seaford Business Brings Good Karma to Community Group A business in Seaford has continued its support to local good causes by donating money to the Havens Community Hub CIC (Community Interest Company). Jerry Lyons and Wendy Reed run marketing company The Estate Agent Content Club and donated £200 to the community group which supports projects from Seaford to Saltdean. The donation was made on behalf of The Karma Club, which is the charitable arm of Jerry and Wendy’s business. It helps different community projects and groups each month, locally, nationally and globally. Jerry said: “We know of the work the team at Havens Community Hub do and it’s very inspiring. They have stepped up their efforts during the Covid-19 crisis and are providing all sorts of valuable help and support to the communities along our part of the South Coast.” Paula Woolven, Director of the Hub, said: “We are very grateful to Estate agent Content and the Karma Club for their donation, which is enabling us to get ‘handson’ during this crisis. We are re-distributing hundreds of kilos of perishable food by working with FareShare and our Hub volunteers, supporting vulnerable and elderly members of the community and setting up new community transport support schemes to aid the

NHS and keep the community moving after the lockdown ends.” Also, in May, the Karma Club donated £240 in partnership with one of its members to Maggie’s Cancer Care to provide 8 hours of counselling to people affected by the disease. St Andrew’s Summer Fête It is with great regret that the Fête Committee of St Andrew’s, Bishopstone, announces the CANCELLATION of this year’s Fête, which was to have taken place on Saturday, 1st August 2020. In these uncertain times it has not been possible to ensure that the hundreds of visitors we usually welcome could be properly protected from COVID-19. We are hugely grateful to our regular visitors and participants who have supported the Fête through the years. Our 1,300-year-old Church costs a great deal to run; the Fête is one of our main fundraising events and we get little official help. If you feel moved to make a contribution it will be gratefully received. Cheques in favour of Bishopstone PCC can be sent to the Churchwarden, Hilary Norsworthy at 8 Hawth Hill, Bishopstone, Seaford, BN25 2RL.

Walking Back to Happiness

What walking can do for your health During Lockdown I was furloughed, and my husband John had to work from home. We decided to use the time it usually took us to commute (an hour each way) to walk. We’d never really walked as a form of exercise before...we’d never really taken any form of exercise before, so this was something new. We worked out a route, and as we were used to getting up at 6am to travel to our respective jobs, we decided that staying in that routine seemed sensible so we wouldn’t be too out of sync on our return to work. The mornings were gradually becoming lighter at the start of Lockdown, so although we were heading out early it wasn’t dark. We have walked for just over an hour every day for ten weeks and this is what we’ve discovered.

Walking trims your waistline – Both John and I had the start of middle age spread. Over ten weeks I’ve dropped a dress size and John has discovered he’s wearing the trousers that prior to lockdown he’d been considering donating to charity. Walking relieves arthritis pain – After four weeks

John noticed that his arthritis pain seemed less. This seemed counterintuitive so I consulted the arthritis

society website and discovered that walking is recommended because it does indeed help reduce inflammation and stiffness in your joints. The important thing to remember is to walk ‘correctly’. Hold your head up; keep your neck, shoulders and back relaxed; swing your arms naturally, with a slightly bent elbow; tighten your stomach muscles a little to give yourself a supported core, and breathe deeply as you walk.

Walking improves your mental wellbeing – At the start of Lockdown I think we both felt really anxious about all the uncertainty. As the weeks progressed, while we walked we discussed our worries and thrashed out solutions to some of the problems we faced or might face. I certainly began to feel in a better place mentally and as though I could cope better with life in general. Being outside, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine definitely helped to clear some headspace each day. Walking reduces blood pressure – John’s blood

pressure had been sneaking upwards and just before Lockdown our GP had been monitoring it with a view to him starting blood pressure medication. When it became clear that he wasn’t going to be examined by a doctor for some time I was concerned enough to buy a home blood pressure monitor online. We tested it out to make sure the readings matched those of the clinic then forgot about it! After six weeks (on the date he was supposed to have been returning the GP) we tried it and discovered his blood pressure was just within normal range. By week ten it was well within the normal range. Mine too has dropped significantly. Crucially throughout this period neither of us has felt like we were ‘exercising’. Walking felt natural and easy. I know this article is anecdotal and personal but there is plenty of research to support exercise being almost as important as diet in controlling type-2 diabetes; that it helps with balance and co-ordination and so helps to prevent falls in older people, meaning they are more likely to stay out of hospital, which at the moment is even more important than usual, and finally that it helps boost the immune system which is important for obvious reasons right now. We will definitely continue to fit walking into our day even when life returns to a more normal pattern. Jo Turner

Seaford Town Council urges tourists to pause before visiting Owing to many essential facilities being unable to open until further notice, the Town Council urges visitors to plan before they visit as part of its ‘Pause Before Visiting’ emergency campaign to reduce littering and disruption to residents.

Seaford Head and other popular beauty spots. This has led to increased pressure on services, as well as leaving residents of the town feeling disappointed and disrespected by the mess left behind by visitors. The Town Council does not want to discourage tourism, and continues to support local businesses and the community through the lockdown exit; however, the message must be clear that the town is restricted by reduced essential facilities and may not be the best place to visit for a group day trip.’ The Town Council’s website homepage now features its Pause Before Visiting campaign, which highlights to members of the public from out of town what facilities are not available such as public toilets and lifeguard services, and reminds that all litter must be taken home.

The Town Council has become increasingly concerned by the volume of visitors arriving in the town now that lockdown restrictions have started to relax. As well as social distancing concerns, this has caused an alarming increase in littering and worse at Seaford’s beauty spots.

The Town Council and partner authorities are continually checking guidance and being advised by Government bodies of how and when facilities can begin to open. The Town Council will update its website and advise the public accordingly when facilities can re-open.

Many reports have been received about large amounts of litter being scattered over areas or dumped in bags by bins rather than being taken home by visitors, which is what should be the case. There have also been reports of human waste which is thought to be a direct result of visitors not planning before they travel and public toilets remaining closed following national advice to this effect. This is something which the Town Council takes very seriously and has been working with partnering authorities to address as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson for the Town Council said: ‘The last few weeks have seen a huge increase in litter and worse all over the beach, South Hill Barn area,

It’s the year of staycation, and while many will holiday in the UK, seniors like myself will mostly stay home. It’s time to enjoy our gardens. If all those TV gardening programmes have inspired a desire to undertake garden improvements, maybe that holiday money could be spent on a project. If you love nature a wildlife pond will attract birds, insects, amphibians and perhaps a hedgehog into your garden. TV’s Charlie Dimmock is the expert on water features and ponds, and you can find her good advice online. For children a simpler, cheaper option is a mini-pond, see rspb.org.uk for a ‘Create a mini-pond,’ step-by-step guide. This would be a brilliant staycation project for the kids, with maybe some camping and star gazing in granny’s garden if restrictions allow. Happy holidays.

All gardens should have lavender; this easy plant grows in poor, well-drained soil in full sun, and with so many varieties available it’s worth doing some research before you buy. Lavandula angustifolia – English lavender – is hardy with good perfume. Hidcote, a popular cultivar with violet-blue flowers, is good for low hedges and edging. Munstead is paler and recommended for coastal areas. To dry lavender, pick the flowers early on a fine day, tie stems together in small bunches and hang to dry in a dim, airy place out of direct sunlight. When dry and crisp, the flowers can be stripped off to make pot-pourri or lavender bags. Lovely stored with your linen.

A message from our Chair Sara Williams Dear Members, at the time of writing, the Government has updated us regarding the gradual lifting of Lockdown, and it’s clear it will be some time before life returns to ‘normal.’ With this in mind the Committee and I have agreed it would be prudent to further cancel all social meetings and outings up to mid-September, hopefully reconvening for the social evening on 24th September 2020. This means that the annual show will NOT go ahead this year. We suggest that for those of you that have paid fees for Cambridge and/or Wisley, we hold on to them, as we will rebook both of these trips for next year. If however, you wish to have your monies returned, please contact Pippa Logan in the usual way and a cheque to be sent to you. For all members who have paid subs for the year 2020, these will be carried forward to cover 2021 as a gesture of goodwill, and in the hope that next year will be better and

Sussex Wildlife Trust

My front lawn

Plant it and they will come

Do you remember that Kevin Costner movie, Field Of Dreams? Kev plays an Iowa farmer who, after hearing strange voices, transforms his land into a baseball pitch and summons the ghosts of a long-dead baseball team. Ridiculous. Yet, when I bought my first home eight years ago and stood on my new, perfectly manicured 15ft by 20ft suburban front lawn, all I could hear were voices in my head telling me to destroy it. Rumours spread of my debauched gardening plans. My new neighbours eyed me with suspicion – especially when they overheard that I was planning to hire a stripper for the weekend. The clattering of the petrol-powered turf stripper was only drowned out by my maniacal laughter as I razed the 300 square feet of lawn to mud. You could hear the house prices dropping all along the cul-de-sac. The neighbourhood watched from behind twitching curtains as I carefully broadcast native wildflower seeds over the bare soil. Through the wet winter my front lawn looked ready to host a reenactment of The Battle of Agincourt. And then spring came.

the wildlife arrived. Bees, bee-flies, beetles, burnets and butterflies. Unusual species appeared too: Wall Brown and Brown Hairstreak butterflies, Ghost Moths, Wasp Spiders and a lone Common Spotted Orchid. On summer days my mini-meadow sang to me; a choir of buzzing bumblebees and chirruping grasshoppers. My own nature reserve; beautiful, wild, endlessly fascinating and filled with life. I am genuinely bemused as I watch my neighbours struggle with their lawnmowers each week. Why go out of your way to kill something when you can just sit back and let it live? I simply swing my scythe and mow my meadow once at the end of the summer. I imagine I look like that shirtless bloke from Poldark (although I actually resemble a chunky but cheerful Grim Reaper).

Wildflower meadows were once a widespread feature Meadow Buttercup, Oxeye of the English countryside but since the 1930s we have Daisy, Cowslip, Yellow tragically lost 97% of our flower-rich fields. Hooray! A physically distanced handful of committee members met in our glorious garden at the Crouch early in June and made a decision, to reopen on 17th June after more than three months of closure. However, while our special garden is as beautiful as ever, gossiping can take place only at a 2m distance of course, so there may be some bizarre half-overheard conversations as the six volunteers allowed in the garden at any one time shout questions, answers and instructions to and from onions to roses or classroom to wildlife pond. And speaking of the classroom, there will be no giggly catch-up sessions over coffee or tea as no drinks will be served on site until it is considered safe to do so. How will we survive? Needing some volunteers to keep the garden in continued good shape means visitors must be limited to one at a time, but the good news is that there are plenty of vegetables and plants to sell, so come on in for business (almost) as normal. We’d love to see you and hear how your gardens are looking or just exchange ideas on things horticultural. We said earlier that the garden is looking wonderful and that’s in some part due to the so generous donation of plants by Wynne’s Garden Centre. We’re looking forward to a colourful display in the near future, or possibly even as you read this. In the meantime, you know where we are, open on Wednesday mornings from 9.30am until 12.30pm. The garden is blooming marvellous and thrives on a bit of admiration. The Garden Team Photo: Has anyone noticed how delightfully strong floral scents are at the moment, among them honeysuckle?

However the Seahaven Hard of Hearing committee haa been keeping in touch with our members through Andrea’s colourful, interesting newsletters. We have missed our May outing and various speakers but hope that when we are able to meet up again we will arrange something special for everyone.

Keep safe and well, and we look forward to getting out and about in the near future.
