From the GM A Note from the GM

I just received my survey results... What do I need to know?

I get numerous questions and feedback about the survey and felt that it was important to add context to its purpose and how we use it as a tool for decisionmaking.

First, understand that we use it as a direct link to Member Satisfaction. What does that mean? In the private club world, we pride ourselves on improvement, and each Department Head, along with myself, is graded with these scores. If you believe that we are worse off today than we were last year, then by all means, score us low. Remember, this is not a score on how the Board or SIPOA are doing (I will get to this later on) but how your staff is doing in our pursuit of “better.”

Overall, we are not showing much improvement in our scores, which to me is concerning. Our Net Promoter Score is +18.67, meaning we have slightly more "Promoters" versus "Detractors." Our goal in 2023 is to show incremental improvement by focusing on the areas that our "Detractors" see as need areas. It is important to understand that this is not the area to take out your frustration with the Board or your disagreement with Renew 50 (Yes, we get one respondent per day that blames this on the Club and scores us accordingly).

This survey was designed instead to provide me and the team with “actionable” feedback so that we can adjust our operation to better meet your expectations. Below I will provide some examples.

The major items on our list to address are:

BEACH CLUB EXPERIENCE

We have zero control over the number of people (members, guests of members, renters) who use this amenity, but after last year’s feedback, we believe we can do better with restroom cleanliness, staff attentiveness, and pool monitoring, so we have an enjoyable environment and service. This feedback also was the impetus for creating a "Member-Only" beach area at Ocean Terrace. We believe that if we address these weaknesses in 2023 that we are doing “better.”

FOOD & BEVERAGE

In 2022 we focused on building a team that could help us deliver an enjoyable food and beverage experience and create venues that complemented one another to provide you with choices. From the Golf Veranda to the Pizza Oven and now the Osprey Café transformation, Pelican's Nest menu options (Yes, local fish and Grouper are back!) along with service at Ocean Terrace from June – August, we believe that we ood space that we plan to continue building aking of menu items, Members should know can accommodate your dietary/culinary getarian, vegan, low carb, light or no sauce, and gluten-free) within 24 hours notice. Email we can create something from our kitchen t we are sure you will enjoy. In addition, this at the Island House, we plan to have from themed nights to an expanded appy Hour, as well as bring back some of the e a new “Member Night” and fun beverage

SEABROOK ISLAND CLUB | 3

MEMBER-ONLY EVENTS

From Pop-Ups to Trivia and Bingo, we are continuing these throughout the year and look forward to reaching 100 Member-Only events in 2023 I would say that this is an improvement, and we look forward to expanding our efforts throughout the year

2023 PROJECTS

BALANCING THE NEEDS OF ALL MEMBERS

Please understand that our staff doesn’t decide who gets to enjoy the club, only that we are navigating the club needs of all who are granted privileges, and we will always be balancing the needs of all and making adjustments as needed.

Amenity scores continue to improve, and each team has worked hard to deliver the best possible experience for our Membership. I am very proud to announce that as the year progresses, each amenity below has exceeded the 80 percent mark, and we would like to see that continue next year.

Equestrian Center 82.59%

Golf Maintenance 84.08%

Thank you all for your continued support and notes of encouragement. You have a team dedicated to fulfilling a “better” experience, and our hope is that it will improve over time.

Island House Dining

What to Expect for Summer Dining

Executive Chef Daniel Doyle

Pelican's Nest

Summertime is here, and the team and Chef Antjuan are getting excited This year at the Pelican's Nest, the focus is local fresh seafood We are using local Mahi and Grouper along with US domestic white shrimp The menu offers a southern pub flair featuring a Blackened Grouper Sandwich, Mahi Tacos, Nest Burger, and an expanded entrée selection

We are bringing back Member nights with fun, innovative specials, including a fresh oyster/ raw bar We look forward to the many fun things that are planned

Osprey Café

The Café this year is shifting to offer made-to-order grain bowls, fresh salads, and signature sandwiches. We will still have the popular ice cream, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and Chef Christine’s delectable pastry options. Look out for the new Café to open in early June with instant classics like the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, the Pelican Bowl, and many others.

Cap'n Sams' Grill

Cap'n Sams' Grill will remain similar to years past, featuring made-to-order burgers, hot dogs, and summer grill favorites. Also, it will be open in early June with expanded hours of operation.

Island House

My and Chef JJ's favorite time of year to cook is spring and summer The farm harvests are in full swing, and the seafood is plentiful

At the Island House, we are putting a strong emphasis on sourcing our ingredients through local farms and fishermen

Our passion for cuisine finds its pulse in the beauty of our region’s seasonality and the bounty of what is available From fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, milk, and honey, there is no limit to what our local farms can offer us

We have built relationships with local growers who bring us deliveries each week. The opportunity to interact with these great, passionate people fortifies our tie to the community and enables us to serve Members the best ingredients.

Mushroom grower Rob Shulz of Super Mushroom Bros in Charleston provides us with various mushrooms such as king trumpets, lion's mane, and chestnut mushrooms.

Hamilton Horne of King Tide Farms in Charleston provides a bounty of microgreens, herbs, delicate leaves, and lettuce.

Amy and Dan of UrbFarm on John’s Island supply weekly flowers and herbs for garnishes.

Jeremy of Storey Farms on John’s Island provides us with eggs, chickens, ham hock, and various other items.

We also have a relationship with GrowFood Carolina, which represents farms from all over the state and locally, so we can always have the freshest products on our tables. I pick up our delivery each week from their warehouse on the peninsula of Charleston, which includes staples such as Split Creek Farms honey and Crème Fraiche from Lowcountry Creamery. We utilize the offerings from GrowFood in our weekly specials that are imagined by what is fresh and available for the week.

Our seafood is primarily sourced through Crosby’s Seafood which pulls from docks up and down our coastline, often from Cherry Point right on Wadmalaw Island.

At the Island House, we believe in Farm and Tide to Table practices and will continue to offer Members and guests the freshest and most locally sourced ingredients possible.

We will be debuting a new lunch and dinner menu over the next couple of weeks that features the summer bounty and the harvests of our partners. We also look forward to theme nights and continuing our stellar Pop-Ups Series I want to thank all the Seabrook Island Members for their support and kind words during my first year, and I look forward to a great rest of 2023

Much love and thanks, Chef D and the Team

Enjoy a Taste of Seabrook Island Lager

Erik Lensch - Restaurant Manager

Seabrook Lager was imagined a few years ago as a beer to successfully fit our lifestyle here on the Island We teamed up with Estuary Brewery located at 3538 Meek's Farm Rd, Johns Island, SC (You really couldn’t get any closer within the community!) After a few meetings and an extraordinary beer tasting with Kristian Edwards, the General Manager of Estuary, we decided on a lager-style beer It's an easy-to-drink, light, crisp taste that can be enjoyed by all beer drinkers. After a game of golf, tennis, or a day of relaxing by the pool, it's the perfect way to feel refreshed and wind down!

Kristian came out to take several pictures in and around the Club to get inspiration for the art department to produce a perfect label for the can At a Pop-Up Event, Kristian had a few of the sketches and style boards set up for the Members to vote on which one they liked the best In the process of elevating the Member experience, the beer gives the Membership another aspect of the club to be proud of and show off to friends and family in a unique way. So, if you haven't tried Seabrook Lager yet, this is your sign to do so!

Golf News

Brian Thelan – Head Golf Professional

We’re rounding the corner from a highly successful and busy spring season to a slightly slower summer golf season. This is a transition period for the turf where the ryegrass “burns out,” and the Bermuda grass takes over You’ll notice some discoloration in the turf, which is a normal part of the transition You may notice a few bare spots This, too, is a transition where the ryegrass used to be growing, and the Bermuda grass will soon cover over

Another aspect of the maintenance transition to the summer season is aerating and top-dressing the greens and aerating all turf areas We’re scheduled to do this and close each course (June 5 – 15 for Ocean Winds and July 10 – 20 for Crooked Oaks) We only do this once per year, and it takes about a month for the greens to heal from this important maintenance practice (see page 17 for a more detailed report from Sean Hardwick).

This year, for the first time in a long time, we have two new Club Champions. Congratulations to first-time Seabrook Island Club Champions John Osborne and Gretchen Gordon.

A Note From the Handicap Committee

We are thrilled that our courses are in tremendous shape, and the number of players continues to increase both here and around the country. The USGA reports that the number of new players with handicaps has increased by 17% over the past two years. Golf is certainly not declining anymore. We expect our courses to be busy and our events to fill up quickly

As a reminder, it is your responsibility to record your proper score each time you play a valid 9 or 18-hole round anywhere in the world This certainly pertains to those of you that are part-time at Seabrook and may have membership(s) at another club(s) We on the Handicap Committee have the responsibility of tracking all the rounds at Seabrook and assisting those who need help in posting their rounds Remember, to participate in the MGA and SILGA, as well as Seabrook Island Club tournaments and other sponsored events, a valid USGA handicap is required.

Finally, some additional good news. First, over the past few months, the Handicap Committee, in conjunction with the Golf Committee, has reviewed the routing of the Pelican tees for women and established an official Eagle routing for the men. These tees are a mixture of the Finch/Heron and the Osprey/Egret respectively. Second, with the use of thousands of hole-by-hole scores by the players at Seabrook, we have re-ranked the handicap stroke ranking for each hole The allocation now “feels” much more logical All of these changes will become effective when the new cards are issued in the late spring

Again, please enjoy golf, play at a reasonable pace of 2 hours per 9 and 4 hours per 18, and record those scores See you on the links!

Which Sand Wedge is best for your sand and short game?

– Golf Pro Martin Shorter has answers!

As beach season is here at the Seabrook Island Club, it's a good time to consider which sand wedge is best for your sand and short game Get fit or demo our sand wedges to see which bounce and grind meets your shortgame needs Not all wedges are created equal!

There are three things to consider when purchasing a new wedge:

1. Loft

Depending on your distance gaps, you may want 3 or 4 wedges in your bag A pitching wedge (@ 40-45 degrees of loft), a gap wedge (at @50-52 degrees of loft), a sand wedge (54-56 degrees of loft) and a lob wedge (58-64 degrees of loft)

2. Bounce

Bounce is the angle from the leading edge to trail edge of the sole of the club. Low-bounce wedges have 6-8 degrees of bounce. Midbounce is 10-12 degrees, and a high bounce wedge is 12 degrees and above. Low bounce is generally for firm turf conditions and a shallower attack angle, while mid-bounce is the middle ground of turf conditions and angle of attack, and high bounce is generally meant for wet turf conditions and a steeper attack angle

3. Grind

The grind of the wedge is the grinding or shaping of the sole or bottom Depending on your playing competency, the grind of the wedge will help in club turf ball contact and give you the confidence needed to play your best golf

Ready to step up your game?

Schedule a fitting with one of your PGA Professionals to get fit for your wedges, or work with a Tour Technician on a fitting day to get the proper wedge for your game. We look forward to seeing you on the course or at the short game area!

In April, the Club set a new all-time monthly record for golf rounds played (7,461!). It shows that golf is alive and well on Seabrook Island, and we look forward to continue making the golf experience as enjoyable as possible for Members! NEWRECORD!

Inside the Green

As we begin the summer season, there are many things that are being done on our beautiful golf courses to make them as enjoyable as possible The most notable upcoming maintenance is the aeration of the Seabrook Island Club courses Be sure to mark the following dates in your calendar to plan accordingly

Ocean Winds

Ocean Winds Course will be closed for aeration from June 5 -16 The greens will be aerated with a contracted drill and fill service, which will come in on the 5th and be finished in two days There's a 10” core depth, and the greens will be aerated with a large tine aerator This is one of the most important maintenance practices for course health and is filled completely with dry sand The greens will be mowed with vertical mowers to remove thatch and old plant material Fairways, Tees, Roughs, and approaches will also be on the turf throughout the coming year. It will take several weeks for the greens to recover completely from the aggressive aeration and topdress.

In addition, oak trees and palm trees will be pruned around tees and greens to increase sunlight and remove overhanging obstructions for tee shots.

The staff also began applying chemicals to the rye overseed in May to start the transition to the underlying Bermuda grass. There will be shaded portions of the Rough and Tee areas that may

A Beginner's Guide To Pickleball

Looking to try out America's fastest-growing sport? If you're new to the game, check out eight key rules to know before you begin playing It won't be long until you're hooked on the fun, fast-paced game!

1. Each point starts with a serve

The person on the right side of the court, facing their opponent, starts by serving diagonally into the right or left service area Be sure it clears the kitchen so it counts!

2. Your serve must be underhand

Serve the ball underhand, ensuring you make contact with the ball below your waist You can either hit it in the air or by bouncing it on the ground once before making contact

3. Each round is played until a fault

Faults occur when the serve doesn't clear the kitchen or when the ball is hit out of bounds or into the net A fault also occurs when you don't let the ball bounce on both sides of the court before starting to volley

4. No volleying in the kitchen!

You can never hit a volley while your body is in the kitchen or on the kitchen line

Ensure you don't get carried into the kitchen after a volley, either! The only exception to the rule is when your opponent dinks into the kitchen, which is a defensive shot that prompts you to be able to enter the kitchen to hit the ball

5. Let the ball bounce on both sides of the court

Before volleying, the ball must bounce at least once on each side of the court If you hit the ball before it bounces twice, it's a fault!

6. You only win points on your serve

You only win points on your serve, and you continue serving until you lose the point

7. Both partners serve during a turn

Both players have the opportunity to serve on their side to the opposite opponent. Therefore, if the first partner loses the point, the ball then goes to the second partner for their turn at serving. However, to keep it fair, the starting team gets just one serve

8. The game is played to 11 points – and you must win by 2.

Understanding the Pickleball Court

What to Bring to the Racquet Club

Not sure what to pack for the Racquet Club? Director of Racquet Sports, Laura Ferreira, has compiled a list to ensure you're Pickleball or Tennis ready!

Your tennis racquet or pickleball paddles, and a second “spare racquet” in case you break your strings or your pickleball paddle gets damaged Extra overgrips (the Yonex Supergrap is a great option for the summertime!)

An extra towel A Gamma tacky towel is a great option if your hands are always sweaty and slippery.

An extra shirt.

A thermal water bottle to keep your drink cold.

A can of tennis balls.

Don't forget your phone in case your significant other is trying to sabotage your tennis or pickleball game!

Did you know?...

Perfect for Happy Hour

Toadfish is a local brand from Charleston, SC! Their mission is to clean the ocean's waters so ecosystems can thrive and we can continue enjoying all that the water offers

To do this, Toadfish has found that oysters are the solution A single oyster filters up to 50 gallons of coastal water daily, removing the toxins from runoff and creating a habitat where marine life can flourish

With each Toadfish purchase, funds are used to plant oyster beds to clean the coastal waters. So far, they've planted enough oyster beds to filter over 82 million gallons of water per day!

Equestrian Center

Seabrook Island Club Trail Rides

Charles Hairfield – Director of Equestrian

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy one of the Equestrian Center's trails!

We offer guided, beginner-friendly scenic trail rides, beach rides, and pony rides.

Our scenic trail ride tours about three miles around the island's interior This ride is mostly shaded as we horseback through the maritime forests, tidal marsh, Drake Pond, and along the Seabrook Garden The wildlife is very active in this area of the island Depending on the time of year, we often see alligators, deer, birds, turtles, and much more. Our trail ride is a great opportunity to see Seabrook from a different perspective!

Our beach ride takes us to Captain Sams inlet on Seabrook’s North Beach We often head out around low tide when our shorebirds, seabirds, and local stand-feeding dolphins happen to be the most active This is a great opportunity to see and learn more about our local and migratory wildlife!

Our pony ride is a 30-minute guided walk under the magnolias for our younger riders, seven and under. Our ponies typically enjoy the rides as much as the kids do!

Scooby is a Quarter horse in his early twenties. He just recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with us at the Equestrian Center!

Scooby spent most of his life living out west, where he worked cattle on a ranch. Seeing the ocean was a big change of scenery for Scooby, but he has grown to love splashing around in the waves and is confident in guiding the way through the shallows out to the sandbars on the North Beach

Next time you're at the Equestrian Center, be sure to find Scooby and say hello!

Kirsten, who works as a Holistic Psychotherapist, is a born and raised California girl, while Austin, who works in FinTech, is a South Carolina native from the upstate region. The third member of the Guest family is their pup, Bailey Louise, who is from Alpharetta, Georgia, and even works alongside Kirsten as her assistant

Spending his Summers on Kiawah growing up, Austin always loved the area, which inspired their recent move from Manhattan to Seabrook Island Since starting a new chapter of their life here, the couple takes full advantage of everything the island offers In their free time, they can be seen taking daily sunrise beach walks with Bailey Louise, biking, playing golf and tennis, doing yoga, and working out at the Lakehouse While off the island, they love to walk around downtown Charleston and enjoy the gastronomic scene there.

Austin and Kirsten’s favorite amenity at the Club is golf, which they like to play together, followed by a wonderful meal at Bohicket Lounge. The couple looks forward to increasing their involvement within the Seabrook community by participating in future couples’ golf events and joining social clubs that align with their interests, such as photography. Seabrook feels like home to the Guests because of its beauty and friendly vibes that Seabrook offers

Welcome to the Seabrook Island Club, Kirsten, Austin & Bailey Louise!
