Master Board

Thank you for your attendance at the Board meetings. We look forward to seeing you in person or on Zoom. We appreciate the level and various kinds of communication we receive from the community. As always, our goal is to have meaningful conversations that result in the betterment of our community. Should you have questions, concerns or ideas, please contact your Master Board at vccmasterboard@vccgolfclub.com.

We hope you have been enjoying the new technology available to members of VCC. If you have not done so, please consider downloading the Hotwire Fision and Clubhouse

Online applications. In the November issue of the Villager, Judy Lieske and Lois Christenson offered step-bystep instructions to download each of these applications to your electronic devices. These tools make staying connected a breeze.

On Saturday, November 2, VCC enjoyed its inaugural Service Day. More than 100 members of our community cleaned signs, picked up trash, worked on the landscape, painted benches,

updated signs, and more. In addition, many volunteers coordinated the potluck items for the luncheon that followed. The weather cooperated and a great deal of good work was accomplished for our community. Plans are underway to determine a date in 2025 for the annual Service Day.

Were you aware that VCC has participated in the Adopt a Hwy/Road Program for several years? Thanks to the efforts of Dave Hoffman, Grant Longley, and other VCC volunteers, the area between Three Oaks heading west to Design Parc Lane is cleaned on a regular basis. This is a great way for

Meet Michelle Suarez –Our Newest Board Member

MARGARET FARMAR

Michelle was born and raised on the south side of Chicago not far from White Sox stadium. She enrolled at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale where she met her husband Gary, and they raised their two children. Michelle and Gary bought their home in 2017 on Coach House Lane. They had been coming down this way for years to visit his mom, Patty, one of the original VCC owners. In fact, Patty wanted the spot that the sales trailer occupied near the 18th hole, and she is still there. In Michelle’s free time she golfs, trains at the gym, and chairs one of the Country Creek book clubs. She and Gary also participate in Wii bowling.

Her undergraduate degree is in Journalism with an Advertising specialization. After graduation she was “lucky enough” to get a couple of jobs and worked at SIU for a total of 34 years in two different capacities. She answered an ad for a job to be an intern, got it, and then the person she was working for left. She moved into the position of Facility Management and Live Entertainment Marketing. After 17 years and many late nights, she decided she wanted a change. She got her Master’s Degree in Education and Computer Based Training. She worked hard to earn a position in Alumni Relations. As the Director of Member Services, she dealt with membership

the members of VCC to engage in a positive activity for the Village of Estero. Would you be interested in leading the efforts for this program in the future? If so, please contact Michelle Suarez at 618-525-5124 for more information.

In closing, we wish each of you the best for the holidays and a prosperous new year. Whether your plans include travel or you’ll spend your time at VCC, we hope you experience all of the joys of the holidays.

issues, as well as writing some articles for the Alumni magazine. After her predecessor retired, she became the Executive Director of the Alumni Association. In this capacity she traveled all over the USA meeting with some of the 250,000 living SIU alumni. In southwest Florida alone, there are over 4,000 Salukis. At the alumni association she worked with their board for over 11 years. She also served on another board for five years, CASE (The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.)

This extensive experience makes her transition to fill in the recently vacated position on VCC’s board seamless. She also acts as the board's liaison for the Communications Committee.

Clearly Michelle is well qualified for her new roles supporting our community!

Trees act as a natural air purifier, removing dust and pollutants while producing oxygen.

DID YOU KNOW?

Common grounds follow Florida policy on trimming tree limbs hanging over your house or lanai. If a tree is growing on your neighbor’s property or common grounds, and the limbs are hanging over your home or Lanai, you are responsible for trimming and paying for the trimming done on your property.

Those cute little Norfolk Pines you can buy at Christmastime at Lowe’s or any large box store are very dangerous. They look nice when 2 feet tall and have pretty ornaments hanging from their limbs. They can grow quickly reaching heights of 60 to 80 feet. They attract lightning due to their height and twist in high winds and fall. Many have been planted on common grounds. You paid $25 for the tree, and now they cost $2500-$3500, to have them removed.

No one has the right to be planting anything on common grounds. Please, let’s work together by being careful of what you plant and where you plant it.

CCMGA News

Our season is underway and it is getting off to an exciting start. We have had four holes in one already. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the foursome of Bob DeCosta, Guy Gibson, Jim Kaltz and Ken Crimmins were playing golf together. On hole #9 Bob DeCosta wanted to try his new 5 hybrid. Well, it worked great. Bob got a hole in one from the blue tees, 148 yards. Eight holes later on hole number 17, Guy Gibson stepped up to the tee box with his 8 iron and got a hole in one from the blue tees, 116 yards. Guy was also celebrating his birthday! Fun day for that group. It was the 6th hole in one for Bob and Guy.

Then on Friday, Nov. 8, Richard Page was golfing in the Men’s League and got his first hole in one on hole # 6 from the white tee, 126 yards. Rich liked it so much he came back the following Wednesday and got another hole in one on hole #18! 77 yards from the white tee. Congratulations to all three of them for a fantastic start to the season.

We had our first member meeting and luncheon on Nov. 15. We had 56 players and great weather for our golf scramble. The winning team of Ray Atherholt, Dan Chelenza, Tony Lamia and Dan Daigneault took first place honors. Chef Kwazadine and his staff served up a delicious turkey lunch with all the sides and pumpkin pie.

Many of our members commented on the good conditions of the course. Thanks to Miguel Escobar and his team for their efforts on maintaining the course.

Currently we have 103 members total, with 5 new.

Some upcoming events are:

• Dec. 13: Meeting and luncheon. Game is a step aside scramble, 8:30 start. (ABCD) players team.

First Scramble/Luncheon

The fall season of the CCLGA held its first scramble and luncheon on November 12 on a very warm Florida day. The scramble was well attended with 120 participants, all competing for the coveted first place win. The winners were Sue Petronis, Colleen Moore, and Jo LeBoeuf. Five dollars in Johnny Cash was presented to closest to the pin on hole #7, Marianne Meola, and closest to the hole #16, Syd Seneca.

Current CCLGA executive board members are Alison Vukojevic, President; Bonnie Gibson, Vice President; Patty Vavrek, Treasurer; Lynn Polulak, Parliamentarian; Sue Mastrodonato, 9 hole representative; and Nancy Eisenberg, Secretary.

The CCLGA held its first meeting at the luncheon, certifying affirmative results of a bylaws change,

stating that payment for golf fees includes prize money.

A New Members’ breakfast is scheduled for January 20, 2025 to be held at VCC Clubhouse, hosted by Lynn Polulak, Parliamentarian.

A chairperson (or co-chairpersons) is still needed for the charity event scheduled for February 13, 2025. Please contact Alison Vukojevic at alison.vukojevic@gmail.com to express your interest. It is a very important committee that is committed to raising money for a specific charity.

The next scramble and luncheon, Red and White tees to the green, is scheduled for December 10.

Bocce News

Fall VCC Bocce started in mid-October and ran through the first week of December this year. We normally finish in November, but the court maintenance and repair cost the league two weeks. We had ten (10) teams play in the fall league, and as of the date of this writing, the teams battling for first place are the Ball Busters, the Banditos, and the Rascals.

The High Rollers and Bandettes haven’t played as many games as yet but are making great strides to take the lead in the next several weeks. Who will win the season? We will announce the winning team in The Villager January edition.

The VCC Bocce winter league will start mid-January and run through the end of March. Right now 13 teams are going to play, but we can add additional teams if required. If you are interested in joining the league, you can contact one of the captains listed below, or email Patti O’Connor at buka@comcast. net. Each bocce team can have a maximum of 26 players. Our captains are Millie Willis, Joann & Bob Smith, Wayne Canary, Mary Anne Alicea, Sharon & Tom Boos, Diana & Harry Burton, Mike Halpin, Ron Hopkins, Mark & Sue Twombly, Ron Williams, and Tom Van Duyne.

VCC Community Serve Day

The first Annual VCC Community Serve Day was a wrap with a ribbon on top!

An idea that took root in the spring with a team of 8 volunteers resulted in well over 100 volunteers turning out at 8 a.m. on November 2, with gloves, rakes, tools, and golf carts to contribute to jobs small and large throughout our community.

Our common grounds areas experienced a massive influx of people weeding, trimming, and pulling stubborn invasive vines from our shrubbery. They worked nonstop for almost 3 hours and made tremendous progress with our landscaping. Many faded and moldy signs were cleaned and others were replaced throughout our community. This was an important task that increased

visibility of signs to make our streets, pools, and parking areas safer. All around the Country Creek Drive loop and in the Fern Garden, freshly painted benches are now much more inviting to our owners and guests. We even had a litter crew cleaning up every little piece of trash they could find.

All of that outdoor work created hungry volunteers, so dozens of community members made lunch for their neighbors. The food provided was not only plentiful, but delicious. Meats and salads and special desserts overflowed the tables in the dining room. We have incredible cooks here, that’s for sure. And just in case outdoor volunteers didn’t realize they were appreciated, the lunch volunteers decorated every table with thank you treats.

If you missed the first annual Community Serve Day, mark your calendars for October 2025 when friends and neighbors will again be cleaning and painting and cooking, all in the selfless interest of making VCC better.

Veteran’s Day Celebration

The sold-out crowd at this year’s Veterans Day Celebration enjoyed a lovely breakfast buffet and the camaraderie of veterans from the various branches of military service and their families. The dining room reflected a sea of red, white, and blue clothing, commemorative hats and waving flags. Each veteran wore a name tag with a glittering star and their branch of service. The program, presented by Jane Hopson, was organized by several DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) members who are VCC residents. Following a prayer and opening notes, Jane introduced each branch of military service and asked members of that branch to rise. Each veteran was then presented with a small American flag by a DAR member. Once all had been introduced, the veterans gathered for a group photo in the Garden Room.

Prior to the event veterans registered in the lobby and received a ticket. Several lovely gifts were given to the lucky winners during the program. Also, in the lobby a POW/MIA table was set to commemorate those lost and missing in various wars.

The origin of Veterans Day began in 1918, at the end of four years of World War I’s devastation, when leaders negotiated for the guns in Europe to fall silent once and for all on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It was not technically the end of the war, which came with the Treaty of Versailles. Leaders signed that treaty on June 28, 1919, five years to the day after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off the conflict. But the armistice declared on November 11 held, and Armistice Day became popularly known as the day “The Great War,” which killed at least 40 million people, ended. Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day when, in 1954, Congress passed the bill that President Eisenhower signed proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day.

At each place setting in the dining room was a small bell, and so, at 11:00 on November 11, 2024 all attendees at the VCC Veterans Day Celebration rang their bells, hushed for a moment of reflection, and then sang the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America.

VCC Holiday Boutique

Every year, on the first Monday of November, the VCC Holiday Boutique kicks off the Christmas season at The Villages at Country Creek. It’s a shopping experience unto itself, and this year, as in the past, it was a huge success. Lois Christensen, chairperson of the event, gave credit to the support of the community, the skill of the crafters and

the excellent teamwork of all involved.

Seventeen vendors participated in the cash only sale. They made a wide array of clever and beautiful articles from Christmas ornaments and decorations to handbags and jewelry to fun things for children. Decorations for the home as well as one-of-a-

kind gift items were also in the mix. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 155 shoppers strolled around putting their favorite items in their baskets.

The Boutique is made possible by the KnitWits, a group of ladies who meet weekly to make a variety of unique items available to residents, their families and friends. During

their meetings they exchange ideas and partake in friendly camaraderie.

Setup for the event takes place the Sunday before the sale. All participants bring their merchandise to the clubhouse, and it is placed “boutique style” around the main dining room and the sunroom. The committee of crafters and artists

“dress up” the rooms and tables to bring in the holiday spirit for guests to enjoy. The “sales staff” wear Christmas aprons, and the restaurant adds to the event by offering all shoppers a ten percent discount on their lunch.

The Holiday Boutique has been an annual event at Country Creek since 2008 (with the exception of Covid). A small

stipend is collected from those who choose to participate, and a percentage of their earnings is donated to the Country Creek Volunteers. Participation is open to anyone who resides in the community. Simply contact Lois at 239-218-6814. She will guide you through a juried process that ensures quality and eliminates duplication.

Wii Bowling

If you are not familiar with Wii bowling, or know about it but have never come up to see what all the excitement is about, please join us any Monday afternoon.

Play begins Monday, Jan. 13 and continues through March 31. All games are played on Mondays. We will have 56 teams of four participating in the league. Every team will receive prize money at the end of the league season at the Wii Banquet which will be held at Country Creek on April 14.

Karaoke Night at the Creek–Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Friends and neighbors gathered for a night of singing, dancing and fun. The evening began with a delicious dinner. Attendees enjoyed a plated salad, salmon, meat loaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. Red velvet cake was served for dessert. As far as the singing goes, all the genres were covered, country, rock, pop, and the classics. Many stated this was one of the best evenings of karaoke they’ve attended.

VCC History 2

A HISTORY OF THE VILLAGES AT COUNTRY CREEK CONTINUED...

Our story continues in May 1987 when Weiner Homes took title to property purchased in 1985 from the Winter Park Land Company, a development company from central Florida. Previously, the land was the site of the Floweree Citrus Grove—Estero, established in early 1900 by a Montana cattle baron, Daniel Augustus Green Floweree. It was Weiner Homes that developed the property that

would become a new community and golf course called “the Villages at Country Creek.”

By August 1987, eight model homes were under construction south of the present site of the Clubhouse; however, it was not until December that construction began on the clubhouse. As building progressed, it was discovered that trees of the old grove that

had been cut down and buried in the 1970s were now infested with termites. In turn, the new homes built on those sites were also infested with termites. Early residents remember that entire homes were covered with tent-like structures in order to be completely fumigated.

In February 1988, the Weiner Homes sales office opened and advertised a grand opening

of model homes selling from $89,000 to $148,000, including equity membership. Lots on Butchers Holler sold first, and those homeowners took up residence beginning in May 1988. By October, 100 homes were sold. The golf course, designed by Gordon Lewis, opened in October 1988, and the Clubhouse was completed in July 1988, opening in January 1989. Some of the first residents were George and Terri Howard, Vince and Fran Gatti, Carmen and Marie Sciolto, George and Dorothy Brush, Ravis and Eloise Prueitt, Paul and Barb Devaney, Sheila Lawrence, Doug and Cheryl Hoyt, and Bill and Barb Crassman. Ken and Mary Barrett were the first residents on Blacksmith Forge.

By 1989, 200 homes were completed, including manor homes, patio homes and fairway

homes. Jeanne Rubado was the first golf pro. Country Creek had its own TV channel (Channel 19) that included a video tour of Country Creek. The first president of the members group, Alliance, was Ted Zurcher. Some new residents were Harold and Marie Appelquist, Dick and Bonnie Oelkers, Betsy Baker, Bob and Carol Clark, Larry and Carol Westin, Ambrose and Eileen Galvin, Gordon and Virginia Cole, Joe and Barb Vitello,

Roland and Justine Jolie, Dee Mason, and Michael Schultz. Justine Jolie and a few others organized the first Ladies Golf Association. Justine was its first president.

C&S Town Home, a land holding company purchased by GE Financial Group, then bought the community from Weiner homes, and C&S negotiated a contract with US Homes to construct single-family homes, golf villas, and condominiums to eventually complete the community. Two pools and another tennis court were in the plans.

By 1990, Country Creek was a community of about 250 homes, yet it was still a rural area. There was no grocery store nearby, no gas station, no bank; those were yet to come.

JUST FOR LAUGHS...

CAN YOU HEAR THAT?

An old man decided his old wife was getting hard of hearing. He called her doctor to make an appointment to have her hearing checked. The doctor said he could see her in two weeks, and meanwhile, there’s a simple, informal test the husband could do to give the doctor some idea of the dimensions of the problem. “Here’s what you do. Start about 40 feet away from her, and speak in a normal conversational tone and see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.”

So that evening while she’s in the kitchen cooking dinner and he’s in the living room, he says to himself, “I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.”

“Honey, what’s for supper?” No response.

So he moves to the other end of the room, about 30 feet away. “Honey, what’s for supper?” No response.

So he moves into the dining room, about 20 feet away. “Honey, what’s for supper?” No response.

On to the kitchen door, only 10 feet away. “Honey, what’s for supper?” No response.

So he walks right up behind her. “Honey, what’s for supper?”

“For the fifth time, CHICKEN!”
