Guess who’s coming to HP? The Producing Artistic Director of the Florida Repertory Theatre, Greg Longenhagen.

He’s coming at the invitation of the HP University Club to share his “behind the scenes” knowledge of theatre – kind of a glimpse into how productions are selected, how actors are hired, how sets are constructed, and how rehearsals are developed from first reading until opening night. So, sign up for his presentation on the HP calendar! It will be held Thursday, January 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Activity Center. The good news: it’s free, and you might even win some theatre tickets!

The Powerhouse Within: Mitochond

Experts say that every cell in the human body tells a story – and it is a story far more dramatic than most people realize! At the center of this narrative is a tiny structure that can determine how well you age, how energetic you feel, and how resilient your body can be.

The large cell that could not abide oxygen swallowed the oxygen-loving bacterium… and instead of digesting it, they formed a partnership.

The bacterium provided efficient energy using oxygen and the host cell provided protection and resources. The ancient cell That structure is the mitochondrion, famously is our own ancestor and the bacterium it absorbed is the ancestor of every known as the “powerhouse of the cell.” But mitochondria in our body. Step back in time! Our annual HPCO Dinner Dance will be on January 31, 2026. The band, menu, and centerpieces are set, and it’s shaping up to rival last year’s wildly successful event.

Guests will be welcomed with a glass of Prosecco, setting the perfect tone for a night of celebration. An exceptional menu will

enhance your dining experience.

The dance floor will be filled as the band plays classic disco hits from the 60s and 70s. Dust off your vintage attire! Disco dress is encouraged, but not required.

HPCO Employee Assistance / Committee Membership During the off-season, the HPCO subcommittee carefully reviewed five applications for assistance from HPGCC employees. Of these, four were approved, totaling approximately $10,000.

At the November meeting, Subcommittee Chair Mary Stippich gave a summary of the awards and denials. Following her report, the board voted to grant the Applicant Standing Committee full authority to review, approve or deny applications, and determine award amounts throughout the year.

In 2026, the Dinner Dance will be our fundraiser. Looking ahead to 2027, HPCO will again hold both a Golf Tournament and a Dinner Dance, offering more opportunities to come together in support of our mission.

Stunned, she asked, “What should I do?” The doctor replied, “Marry an accountant.” Confused, she asked, “Will that help me live longer?” He said, “No, but it’ll feel like a lifetime!”

Bad, and the Accountant Now, if you’re wondering about our Club’s track record, we’ve been in the clear with “clean opinions” on our financial statements in the past, and let’s keep that trend going—no one wants a “dirty” opinion, unless it’s rendered by Buddy Hackett!

Here are a couple of important things to keep in mind about the audit process:

1. Independence: The accountant must be independent. They can’t benefit from their work, nor can they hold any management role. Independence is both a perception and a fact—like a good pair of bifocals! To paraphrase those outstanding litigators (wink wink) at Morgan and Morgan, “Perception Matters.” You see, independent accountants can sometimes give management a “pat on the back” for

great accounting records. While this is often true, it can lead to a perception of a lack of independence. Assessing their independence is a key job for the Board of Directors along with making sure the Winkler gate works every other time.

Heritage Palms Cycling Club – Come Join MARY LOU REID MLREID107@GMAIL.COM

On Tuesdays and Fridays, HP residents may see a column of brightly garbed bike riders leaving from the Activity Center at 9 a.m. Sometimes a handful of riders are available; other times with a full cohort, there may be as many as 16! In season, 10-14 riders a day has been the norm.

I joined the group in 2015. Little did I know that the members of our group would become some of my closest friends.

The Cycling Club began around 2014 when Toni Grace, our former Fitness Director, was inspired by HP member Marge Olman, to plan rides outside of our community. Toni kept adding interested bikers: singles and couples fairly evenly divided between men and women. The group would ride about 20 miles a day, always stopping to try a new restaurant for lunch. Our pace averaged 12 miles per hour.

We almost exclusively rode on bike paths or sidewalks, usually two-by-two. We called it our traveling mocktail party as we learned about each other’s lives, families, and interests. The 20 miles whizzed by. We laughed that if so miles was an easy feat with all the chatt Occasionally, we would rack our bikes and explore other places like Marco Island, Punta Gorda, and Naples. We would park at the Sanibel Chamber of Commerce, ride through Ding Darling, and end at the Mucky Duck beach on Captiva.

Our interests developed to a point where we would ride 30 miles once a year to Cape Coral’s Tour de Cape. With police support, Cape Coral became a delightful, safe place to explore.

Our next challenge was for eight of us to do the 62-mile Tour de Parks and two to do the 30-mile ride. This ride began at the historic Venice Train Depot, passed 12 beautiful parks on the Legacy Trail in Venice, riding north to parks in Sarasota. On the way back to the Venice Train Depot, we wound over to Casey Key, at one point a barrier island known for its natural beauty and winter home to Stephen King and Martina Navratilova. We began our ride at 7:30 a.m., finishing just in time to eat a provided lunch at 1:15 p.m.

Although the group is a mixture of males and females, the women in the group often plan a get-away girls’ weekend to quaint Dunedin, known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant downtown’s unique shops and variety of notable restaurants.

Since the Pinellas Bike Trail runs right through the middle of town, we would take one day to bike north to Tarpon Springs, known for its strong Greek heritage, historic sponge docks and Victorian-era architecture. The next day the Pinellas Bike Trail would take us south to Clearwater Beach, Sand Key, and Belleair Bluffs.

When Toni Grace retired in 2021, we lost our director. The responsibility for planning rides fell to HP resident Char Wingert, with all of our voices chiming in.

Members who continued to participate in the rides kept reaching for more miles, often going 25-35 miles. Members who preferred to do more moderate rides regrouped.

In the past year, our rides continued on our Tuesday and Friday schedule, leaving the Activity Center at 9 a.m. in season (8 a.m. in the summer).

The core group includes Dan Aas, Sharon Braunwart, Nancy Bonner, Brenda Done, Ellen Sweetman-Foy, Scott Lammers, Tom and Megan McCartin, Dan McDaniel, Patty O’Keefe, Les Ratekin, Mary Lou Reid, Gary Rodgers, and Char Wingert. We’re occasionally joined by Jody Bieber, Linda Calhoun, Willy Hewitt, and Dianne Schade. Any of us can offer more information.

In November our travels took us to the FGCU campus.

Another day that month, we racked our bikes to travel to Boca Grande via the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail.

Riders who want to join our group need to know the following: • We bike approximately 25-35 miles each Tuesday and Friday at 9 a.m.

• Our average speed is about 11-12 miles per hour.

• We’re social.

• We wear helmets and highly visible clothes.

• We rarely bike on roads, except occasionally in bike lanes, but only when necessary.

• Four bikers have electric bikes.

Safety Tips While Driving…

GOLF CART SAFETY

Golf cart accident statistics reveal a troubling trend that most people don’t realize until it’s too late. For those seeking quick facts about these increasingly common incidents: • Annual injuries: 15,000+ emergency department visits each year • Growth rate: 130% increase in injuries over the past 15 years • Children at risk: 31% of all victims are under age 16 • Fatalities: Approximately 600 deaths annually • Most common injury: Fractures (93% of major orthopedic injuries) • Leading cause: Ejection from cart (38% of incidents) What was once viewed as a harmless way to navigate a golf course, has evolved into a significant safety concern as golf carts increasingly appear on residential streets, college campuses, and retirement communities.

As a result, in 2023, Florida Statute #317.212 was established which states that a golf cart may not be operated on public roads or streets by a person who is under 18 years of age unless he or she possesses a valid learner’s driver license or valid driver license. Our HP Rules and Regulations stipulate this as well.

From a safety standpoint, yielding to pedestrians, other golf carts and automobiles is crucial. Golf carts should always yield to ALL pedestrians and other vehicular traffic (i.e., full size cars/trucks/ SUVS) in ALL cases. Being courteous to passersby and other vehicles, including other golf carts, not only keeps others safe, but keeps you safe as well.

Golf Cart Safety Tips: • Keep all arms and legs inside the vehicle.

• Abide by all standard traffic rules.

• Drive defensively.

• Yield to pedestrians.

• Always drive sober.

• Avoid bumps in the road or sharp turns.

• Stay Safe.

GENERAL DRIVING SAFETY REMINDERS

When you’re driving……

• Yield to pedestrians. When making a turn and waiting for an opening in traffic, be aware that pedestrians may have moved into your path. They always have the rightof-way.

• Approach crosswalks carefully. If a pedestrian is crossing or about to cross, stop well back so drivers in other lanes also have time to yield. Do not pass another vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians.

• Follow the speed limit. Abiding by speed limits increases a driver’s ability to see and watch for pedestrians, to adjust for curves or objects in the roadway, and to avoid dangerous situations. Be sure to plan ahead to allow for extra time to get

to your destination, and take time to call ahead if you’re running late, and always follow the speed limit.

• Be cautious around driveways and alleys.

When entering and exiting, these can be very difficult places to spot pedestrians.

Keep a close look out, and if you can’t see clearly, slow down.

• Be aware of children. They are often impulsive and can dart out in the street at any time. Follow the speed limit and be especially cautious around residential neighborhoods and school zones.

• Reduce distractions. Spotting pedestrians requires your full attention.

Using a cell phone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, reading a map, or changing the radio station only makes your driving more distracted, difficult, and dangerous. If you’re using a navigation app on your phone, set your destination before you begin driving.

• Never drink and drive. When you drink and drive, you’re compromising cognitive ability and responsiveness, which increases your risk of hitting someone, or having an accident.

Alert: The Fort Myers Police Department will be patrolling the streets within our HP community starting this month. Please drive safely!

Tennis and Pickleball Exhibition Matches CHAD DYER, DIRECTOR OF RACQUET SPORTS CDYER@HPGCC.COM

Heritage Palms Racquet Sports proudly hosted its first-ever combined tennis and pickleball exhibition on Thursday, November 20. It was a celebration made possible by the completion of four brand-new pickleball courts in the late spring and the full reconstruction of all eight tennis courts over the summer. With both venues being newly refreshed, it was the perfect moment to showcase the upgraded facilities and bring the community together for an exciting evening of racquet sports.

More than 125 enthusiastic members gathered to cheer Head Professional, Daniel Camacho, and me as we faced visiting pros Alex Vega-Soto, Head Professional at Fiddlesticks, and Robbie Greenlaw.

The exhibition kicked off with a lively pickleball match. Alex and Robbie claimed the victory with scores of 11-6, 11-5, but not before the crowd was treated to a series of long, high-energy rallies that had spectators up on their feet throughout the match.

Daniel’s court coverage and consistency, paired with my strong net play, proved to be a winning combination and a thrill for everyone watching.

Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though it’s breaking When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You’ll see the sun come shining through for you The smile song was originally written for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. The instrumental music was actually composed by Chaplin; the lyrics were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. It’s been recorded over the years by many artists, including (surprisingly) Michael Jackson in 1995. It was reported to be his favorite song.

There is something to be said about smiling! First of all, it takes little effort.

Yet, it can be very powerful. It can brighten the day of a passerby or your neighbor… or even you! One could say it’s a universal symbol of joy and happiness… and it costs absolutely nothing. Smiling helps lift your spirits, as well as those around us.

A smile may be more powerful than you realize. It’s also proven to have physiological benefits. Research around the emotional effects of smiling tells us that the simple, physical act of smiling is an immediate cause of happy feelings. It can change your mood, and your actions.

Believe it or not, it even improves your health. According to recent studies at the University of Kansas, the act of smiling improves your state of mind and how your body feels. Frequent smiling has been linked to improved health, rising endorphins (good feeling hormones), and lowered blood pressure. Another study at Penn State University found that smiling also makes us look more attractive to others.

According to researchers Nicholas A. Christakis and James H. Fowler in their book Connected, we are hardwired to outwardly mimic others. Their Facial Feedback Theory states that people imitate others’ facial expressions and come to feel as they do (the path of signals is from the muscles of the face to the brain). Our friends and their friends and their friends affect our happiness. (“Three Degrees of Influence” Rule). Thus, happy and unhappy people cluster among themselves. And, unhappy people are on the periphery of the network.

The HPPA held its first Pickleball Happy Hour Event on Monday, November 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. It was very successful despite the weather not cooperating. Wind gusts were steady at 20 to 30 mph, and temperatures quickly dropped into the low 50’s.

We had 62 people show up for the event and the Cabana stayed open for beverages

and food. Several members were hoping to find some hot chocolate. Everyone had a great time, and we had many new faces show up at the Pickleball courts. We plan to hold more of these Happy Hour events in season. The tennis community has asked to join us at our next event in January, so all the courts will be lit up with social play and camaraderie.

The return of the snowbirds, plus new owners and renters, spark renewed energy each January at Heritage Palms, an undeniably active community.

Common interests, and a sense of belonging, are fertile soil to interact and work together. A closer look at just one of our active members, Kitty Jedd, demonstrates just why HP is such a vibrant place to live.

Kitty, who lived most of her adult life on Long Island, NY, recalls an early job interview for a small temporary personnel business. She arrived at the interview to see the owner talking on the phone. Three other phones were ringing off the hook, with no one to answer them. Seeing a need, Kitty took the initiative to answer the phones, taking callback numbers. The owner was so impressed, Kitty was hired on the spot. That’s Kitty. She sees a need, or an opportunity, and jumps right in.

Interestingly, Kitty doesn’t see herself as a chief. She told me sh e sees herself as a detail person, working in collaboration with

a group of like-minded people to achieve goals and objectives.

In 2010, Kitty and her husband, John, were invited to HP by a friend and business associate from Long Island. They enjoyed their time here so much that they bought their own veranda and moved here permanently in 2013.

Kitty’s current heavy involvement in our community began on a small scale by joining the Women’s Golf Association. Golfing each week, and constantly meeting new women, Kitty built her own first pillar of this community: membership and a sense of belonging.

It wasn’t long before Kitty volunteered for many of the WGA’s special events. Always diligent and ready to do her part, Kitty developed an abundance of friendships. Not only that, but Kitty also built her second pillar of community: influence and having a voice in the culture of HP. Before long, Kitty was elected to the WGA Board as Tournament Director, later as VicePresident, and then President. During her tenure, Kitty collaborated with other officers to revise the organization’s By-Laws to reflect changes within the league. Because of her many contacts and past successes,

Kitty easily found more than enough volunteers to run various events and trusted them to do it well without interference.

Kitty has constructed a strong third pillar of community: fulfilling the needs of the community.

After leaving the WGA Board, Kitty continues to quietly find ways to serve both the WGA and the Fort Myers community at large. She heads the WGA Charity’s “Booze Wagon Event,” raising thousands of dollars each year for underfunded local charities such as Lee Country Breast Cancer and the Dubin Center, an organization that supports www.hpgcc.com 41

those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

In a smaller way, Kitty organizes her golf group to contribute as well. Kitty is currently the chair of the JOHN AND KITTY WGA Hospitality AT THE BEACH, Committee, JULY 12, 2025. planning luncheons and other events that bring WGA members together throughout the season.

Kitty serves on the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) which sets standards for the appearance of HP’s single-family homes, villas, verandas, and terraces.

Always looking for ways to create community, Kitty organizes a monthly summer luncheon called The Lunch Bunch, for women who live at HP year-round.

This past year, Kitty and John were the organizers of the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

And members will often see Kitty at exercise classes in the Activity Center.

Kitty Jedd is just one example of the enormous number of volunteers and participants who make HP such an extraordinary place to live. She proves 42

that there are many ways to help build and support this community. Thus, we see Kitty build her fourth and final pillar of community: emotional connections and bonds that tie us all together.

Obviously golf, tennis, and pickleball offer fun social events. Lee Health Hospital Construction Update KERRI THEISEN, CRC MEMBER KTHEISENREALTY@GMAIL.COM

The Community Relations Committee invited Lee Health personnel to HP once again on November 17. Eric Anderson, System Director of Strategic Capital Construction Projects, and his team from Lee Health Hospital and Skanska Construction gave about 40 HP residents an update on the progress of the new hospital in our own backyard!

A new wing referred to as the “West Bank” is already under construction. The bed count has been expanded by 68 beds, to bring the total to 216. They will build this facility with “shell” floors to allow for quick expansion. The total building height will not be more than eight stories.

There are three entrances in the front of the building: the main entrance, the discharge exit and emergency. The new West wing includes x-ray machines in the examination rooms. Futuristic rehab facilities include pickleball and golf simulation onsite to get patients back in the game. The MN Twins baseball team has committed to this facility for their staff/players rehabilitation. Katy Martinez, representing the Lee Foundation, noted how funds are used for charity care.

The completion date is projected for August/September 2028. HP residents will be invited to tour the facility prior to the opening. The intersection at Winkler and Colonial is under review for a stoplight with the state of FL, who owns Colonial. The newly named road, “Jones Walker Blvd,” was named after the first hospital built exclusively to serve Lee County’s black community in the 1920s.

Eric reiterated that Lee Memorial Hospital on Route 41 will eventually be torn down as it’s too costly to renovate and bring up to today’s codes. Eventually a new healthrelated facility will be built on that site. We look forward to additional updates by the Lee Health team sometime in 2026.

5 Inventions That Failed Spectacularly COMPILED FROM HISTORY FACTS BY JANE BREISCH, EDITOR

From the wheel to the light bulb, innovation has played a central role in the story of human civilization. But history’s inventors also left behind a trail of misfires, failures, and downright disasters.

Here are five ideas that promised to make life better, safer, or more efficient, but turned out to be spectacular flops.

Baby Cages In the early 20th century, crowded cities such as New York and London grappled with widespread tuberculosis. At the time, one common treatment was fresh air, prescribed by figures including the influential pediatrician Luther Emmett Holt. In his 1894 book, The Care and Feeding of Children, Holt wrote that babies exposed to fresh air enjoyed better appetites, brighter cheeks, and improved health.

Enter the baby cage — a wire enclosure fastened to an open window, which allowed apartment dwellers to suspend infants several stories above city streets to “air them out.” The first U.S. patent was granted to Emma Read of Spokane, Washington in 1922, though the idea had circulated earlier. The baby cage briefly caught on, notably among members of the Chelsea Baby Club in London. Even Eleanor Roosevelt used one for her infant daughter, Anna, until a horrified neighbor threatened to call the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Baby cages declined in the second half of the 20th century, largely due to safety concerns.

X-Ray Shoe Fitters In the 1940s and ’50s, shoe stores across the U.S. offered customers a peek inside their shoes. The shoe-fitting fluoroscope was a wooden box that displayed realtime moving X-ray images of customers’ feet. Invented by Boston physician Jacob Lewis in 1919, the device was originally designed to diagnose foot problems in World War I veterans, and was repurposed for retail use after the war.

Though the X-ray technology was real, the device was essentially a marketing gimmick to help shoe sellers boost sales by lending the fitting process a scientific veneer. But that was the least of the invention’s issues — the fluoroscopes emitted dangerous doses of radiation that far exceeded the maximum safe daily dose. As a result of growing awareness around the dangers of radiation, shoefitting fluoroscopes were banned by the late 1950’s.

Thomas Edison’s “Little Monsters” Even the illustrious Thomas Edison had his flops. In 1890, the inventor unveiled the world’s first talking doll, a technological milestone that combined phonograph technology with the classic toy. The 4-pound, 22-inch doll had a porcelain head, wooden limbs, and a tin torso that housed a miniature phonograph. Turning a crank

on the doll’s back played wax recordings of nursery rhymes such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Jack and Jill.”

Unfortunately, Edison’s dolls didn’t speak so much as screech. Due to the low recording volume, the women voicing the rhymes were required to scream into the recorder, resulting in creepy recordings that upset customers. The dolls were also plagued by durability issues and were prone to breaking.

Parents complained, children were terrified, and many of the 2,650 dolls sold were returned. Within weeks, Edison withdrew them from the market, ruefully calling them his “little monsters.” Today, Edison’s “monsters” are considered rare collector’s items and have been displayed at the Smithsonian.

The Isolator Science fiction pioneer Hugo Gernsback — founder of Amazing Stories magazine and namesake of the Hugo Awards — was also a prolific inventor. In 1925, he introduced one of his strangest creations: the Isolator, a helmet designed to eliminate distractions and maximize focus.

Made of wood and felt, the helmet completely enclosed the wearer’s head, leaving only narrow slits for vision. After realizing that people became drowsy inside the helmet after 15 minutes, partly due to oxygen deprivation, Gernsback added an oxygen tank connected to the helmet by a tube. He claimed the device was 75% efficient and predicted it would be a “great investment” for anyone in need of focus.

Though the Isolator never caught on, its spirit lives on in noise-canceling headphones and focus apps.

Anti-Bandit Bag In the 1950’s and ’60s, inventors sought clever ways to foil thieves — and few were as dramatic as the Anti-Bandit Bag. One of the most famous versions was debuted

by French Canadian inventor John H. T. Rinfret in 1963. Rinfret, inspired by his own experience of being robbed, designed a bag with a spring-loaded handle, which enabled the carrier to launch the bag’s contents all over the place in the event of a robbery.

Other anti-bandit bags spewed smoke and dye or triggered shrieking alarms when snatched. Hello from the golf shop. Peak season is here, and we’re looking forward to another busy year of golf. The golf courses are in spectacular shape, and it’s the responsibility of every member to do their part to keep it that way.

You, as members, have made a great investment in your courses, so please make sure to fix ball marks, fill divots, rake bunkers, follow cart directional stakes, and all the other little things that will help keep the courses looking great.

I’d like to remind everyone that the Chelsea Tee Time System is now in “Season” mode (January 1 through April 15). Below is a brief list of how the system operates during season: • Chelsea points are assigned to members bringing guests.

• Chelsea points will be assigned at the placement of tee times three days prior to the day of play.

• Once points are assigned, they will not be removed unless the golf course is closed for play.

• If a player is substituted in an assigned tee time; the player who is removed will retain their point from placement and the new player will receive a point as well.

• Any time booked on the tee sheet after placement, but before the day of play, will also receive Chelsea points.

• A member who fills a vacant tee time on the day of play, will not receive Chelsea points.

• Chelsea points will not be assigned for any tee time 2:30 p.m. or after.

• Abuse of the system will result in penalty Chelsea points assigned to your number and may lead to suspension of golf privileges.

As stated above, these changes will be in effect for the time frame of January 1 through April 15 when demand for tee times is at its peak.

Happy 2026! Here’s hoping everyone had a healthy and enjoyable holiday season!

The WGA has a fun upcoming season starting with two events in January.

January 14 is our luncheon and membership meeting following a shotgun start. It’s the second week of eclectic play (for those who played eclectic on January 7) and a new “crisscross game” for those not playing in the eclectic game.

Monday, January 26 is our evening social event with special food and activities for our Mardi Gras celebration! You can sign up as a group or individually beginning January 12.

Our annual charity event will be held February 18 and benefits the Dubin Center. The center was established in 1995 to provide assistance to families of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia related diseases. In 2024, the Dubin Center team provided services across multiple locations—including faith-based sites, senior centers, community centers, low-income senior housing and public libraries. Through 2,990 interactions, they supported 630 individuals with a wide range of programs, from support groups and caregiver education to social engagement activities, one-on-one consultations, and memory

screenings. The social isolation, for both patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia related illnesses, and their caregivers is a very real challenge. The Dubin Center is the place where: “No one faces dementia alone.” (239-437-3007; www.

We’re incredibly grateful to our residents for your generous support, not only of the WGA, but to the other leagues and charitable organizations within HP. Since our first charity event in 2006, the WGA has donated $301,909 to local charities, including, Pace, Lee Health, Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, Gabriel House, Our Mother’s Home of SWFL, and LIGHTLong term treatment through the gift of Hope and Treatment. Many, many thanks to our WGA volunteers and our entire community who made these impactful donations happen! We’re proud to represent not only the WGA but our HP community in making these donations.

The November Luncheon had 146 in attendance.

We held an ice cream social on November 19 after golf. What a great refreshing way to end the day of golf!

On December 3 the two Ladies’ leagues joined together for a fun scramble and terrific meal. Lots of money was raised for Ana’s Friends, and Santa even helped with our drives on a couple of holes!

Any member who has not received this season’s handbook can pick it up in the Pro Shop. And while you are there, drop off your $5 for the Chip-in Pool. Deadline for this is a couple weeks away so don’t forget.

It depends on where your ball is when you accidently hit the ball.

Ball in teeing area Rule 6.2b (5) Ball Is Not in Play Until Stroke Is Made Whether the ball is teed or on the ground, when starting a hole or playing again from the teeing area under a Rule: • The ball is not in play until the player makes a stroke at it.

• A practice swing is not a stroke.

If the teed ball falls off the tee or is knocked off the tee by the player before the player has made a stroke at it, it may be re-teed anywhere in the teeing area without penalty.

Rule 9.4b Penalty for Lifting or Deliberately Touching Ball or Causing It to Move If the player lifts or deliberately touches his or her ball at rest or causes it to move, the player gets one penalty stroke.

Should you ever have to call 911, don’t worry about how many bars you have — you can make emergency calls even without cell service or a SIM card. This has been the case since the Wireless Communications and Public Safety Act of 1999 took effect, as one provision of the law required the Federal Communications Commission to make 911 the universal emergency number for all telephone services. This is why iPhones sometimes say “SOS only,” and Android phones display the message “emergency calls only” when you don’t have reception.

The HP Book Club will meet on Friday, January 16, at 2:30 p.m., in the Activity Center to discuss The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore. This work of non-fiction is the story of Elizabeth Packard, a 19th century woman who was unjustly committed to an insane asylum by her husband, primarily because she disagreed openly with him about many issues of theology.

The book details her fight against the legal system which allowed her incarceration, and her leadership in a movement to expose inhumane conditions in these mental institutions.

Her work led to significant legal and social reform. One reviewer praised the author for “her meticulous historical research and captivating storytelling.” I will lead the discussion.

Meet Austin Waddell, HP’s Court Care Manager

Austin Waddell has been taking great care of our eight tennis and six pickleball courts since July. He comes from the Blackwood Tennis Club at The Dunes on Sanibel, with seven years’ experience of tennis maintenance. He also has work experience as a cashier, and in grocery store maintenance in MA. A native of Cape Coral, he moved with his family to Stoughton, MA where he played football and baseball, and graduated from Stoughton High School. He later moved back to Cape Coral. What drew him here was that, first he lives just 10-15 minutes from the courts; second, the job provides enough work and daily tasks to occupy his time. “Third, everyone was very friendly and welcoming.”

Duties “On a typical day, I groom all eight tennis courts, clean the rest areas, and take out any trash. After that, I use the leaf blower on the walkways around the tennis and pickleball courts. After leaf blowing the first four pickleball courts, I drive to pickleball courts five and six and do the same. Once all tasks in my daily morning are completed, I will usually have a few hours to complete any other tasks before having to prepare the courts for any 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. tennis matches if they occur that day.”
