LOVE’S LABOR’S LOST

WELCOME

The School of Theatre, Television, and Film (TTF) offers this production in the spirit of the upcoming holiday celebration. Now and again, we must remind ourselves as homo-sapiens that we are endowed with a rich heritage in all facets of our humanity.

As a community focused on educating future generations, we are charged with bequeathing to them a legacy of love, compassion and understanding. We are grateful and blessed to be gifted as artists, along with the ability to utilize this gift in making our world a richer place.

On behalf of my family of colleagues in TTF, I want to say thank you for your continued support of the school. We anxiously look forward to occupying our new facilities and guarantee that you will be watching the second half of our 2022-23 season in more comfortable venues. A feat that could not have been possible without your support.

Thank you for your constant support and patronage. Please continue to stay safe. We hope you enjoy this performance. Happy holidays to you and your loved ones.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Joy to the world, all the boys and girls!”* and non-binary friends! Joy! Joy! Joy! What a joy it has been to work on this play with this company of artists together in shared physical space!

William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labor’s Lost is about four young men (one of them the King of Navarre) who plan to withdraw from the world for three years, taking an oath that they will have nothing to do with food, sleep and, most of all, women. But as luck would have it, the Princess of France and her ladies are scheduled to arrive to settle a debt owed to her father, the King of France. The arrival of the women tests the resolve of the men and eventually, they all fall in love, causing the men to abandon their oaths. Silliness, humor, and disguises ensue!

Our production is set in a romanticized version of the years beginning with the Summer of Love (1967), including the Summer of Soul (1969) and continuing up through the early 1970s. The soundtrack is inspired by Motown, soul, folk, and psychedelic rock. The Kingdom of Navarre has been transformed into “Navarre Records,” loosely based on Berry Gordy’s Motown empire. Most of the love letters in this play have been replaced with songs (and a few more have been inserted for good measure!) The costume, scenic, lighting, and sound design enhance the playful quality of the text as has the collaborative dance making process the actors engaged with choreographer Zack King. We’ve also updated the infamous “disguise scene” with a twist (and shout).

The Legacy of Social Change Movements: This production takes place during the years when Second Wave Feminism is taking shape. This production playfully references the gender and racial politics of the counterculture. However, it is not meant to minimize the important role these movements for social change have played in shaping our country’s relationship to freedom, equality, identity and intersectionality. The artists involved in this production acknowledge with gratitude the legacy and sacrifices of the many ancestors and elders who blazed the trail for us.

There has been so much joy in the making of this production; joy in unpacking Shakespeare text together all semester long; joy in dancing together to the music of the 60s and 70s . And now, it is such a delight to share this joy with you, our audience.“Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea. Joy to you and me!”*

*from “Joy to the World,” by Hoyt Axton, as performed by Three Dog Night, Naturally ,1970.

DIRECTOR

D ANI BEDAU (she/her/hers) is a theatre artist and educator. She is Associate Professor in the School of Theatre, Television, and Film at SDSU where she also heads up the Youth Theatre area. Dani has directed a lot of plays and written or devised a few. She has also co-authored several articles that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Dani has over 25 years of experience creating theatre programs that facilitate conversations across areas of social distance such as race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and social class. She created the Coming Up Taller Awardwinning Will Power to Youth program in Los Angeles and has engaged in work that uses theatre to forge alliances with the Arab-speaking world. Dani is committed to creating brave spaces for learning and growing, to providing leadership opportunities for student artists and to imperfectly doing her part in the struggle to dismantle hierarchy and end white supremacy.

CHOREOGRAPHER

Z ACK KING is a dance maker, actor, and video artist. He received his BFA in Dance with a minor in Theatre Arts from SDSU in 2018. Zack has been a part of dance films, commercials, web shows, live performances, and narrative films. Zack is incredibly excited to choreograph for this show! The vision, design, and performers were all big inspirations for the movement in this show.

Take a Seat!

SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.

You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.

The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
