As a proud HSI institution, we are honored to welcome everyone to the premiere production of The Weight of Dreams.
This is a truly unique and powerful musical production that celebrates the journeys and experiences of Latin American immigrants to Southern California. This production is the final installment of a commissioned theatre project called Crossing Borders, which has brought together institutions and performers from practically all over the world. The Weight of Dreams was born from the interviews of nine individuals who migrated from Latin American countries to Southern California, conducted by Velina Hasu Houston. Together with composer T.J. Keanu Tario, Houston shaped these experiences into a moving theatrical story that is both poignant and inspiring, and it is artfully directed by Peter Cirino, who remains our School’s moral compass seeking constant ways in which TTF SDSU engages with our cross-border opportunities. We also want to thank previous PSFA Dean Peggy Shannon and Dr. Velina Hasu Houston for fostering this appropriate collaboration for TTF SDSU.
As part of the larger Crossing Borders project, The Weight of Dreams demonstrates the power of theatre to bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together to share their stories and celebrate their unique experiences. The project has involved institutions from around the world, including Toronto Metropolitan University, the University of Southern California, London South Bank University, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Art, and now TTF San Diego State University. We hope that you will join us on this journey as we explore the rich and diverse experiences of Latin American immigrants to Southern California. The Weight of Dreams is a celebration of the human spirit, and we are excited to share it with you.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible production, and for your endless support of our work at this School. We cannot do it without you! Please enjoy the work.

The Weight of Dreams is the third and final dimension of a commissioned theatre project called Crossing Borders, which was the brainchild of Dr. Peggy Shannon, a director and producer, and now President of the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. Crossing Borders is a three-part performing arts project – Crossing Borders I, Crossing Borders II, and Crossing Borders III – that is conceived and produced by Dr. Shannon. International in scope, the project involves the U.S., Canada, England, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, Iran, and Guatemala.
Crossing Borders I explores Japanese immigration into Canada and Iranian immigration into England. Crossing Borders II examines the immigrant-kindred challenges faced by indigenous Australians and multiethnic Australians as they strive to carve a place for themselves in the larger, Eurocentric Australian society. Crossing Borders III delves into the immigration of Latin Americans into the U.S. via the U.S.-Mexico border. Using film, video, theatre, dance, music, and spoken word, the Crossing Borders projects investigate the immigration of cultures of color into largely Eurocentric, patriarchal societies that struggle with the cultural evolution immigration can precipitate.
For each play in the commissioned trio, the underlying directive was to interview individuals who had experienced the migrations focused upon in each play, and then utilize their narratives to inspire the creation of characters and story that brought their experiences to life on the stage. The first play was a coalescence of two plays, Fragments by Alex McSweeney and Where Shadow Chases Light by Velina Hasu Houston. They explore the experiences of Japanese migrating into Canada and Iranians migrating into the United Kingdom. The plays have been produced in Toronto, Canada, and London, England. The second play, So Speaks the Land, written by Velina Hasu Houston explores the migration of mixed-race and indigenous black Australians into Eurocentric urban areas in Australia. The play was produced in Perth, Australia; Toronto; and Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Weight of Dreams was commissioned as a musical. Velina Hasu Houston interviewed nine individuals who migrated from Latin American countries to Southern California. Inspired by their accounts and research she conducted on her own, Houston shaped their experiences into a theatrical story working with composer T.J. Keanu Tario who wrote the music. Together, they created a musical play that celebrates Latin American migration into the U.S.
The following institutions have engaged in Crossing Borders: Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) (School of Performance), the University of Southern California (USC School of Dramatic Arts), London South Bank University, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Art, and San Diego State University.

J USTIN MAGALLANES is a first year TFM pre-major at SDSU, as well as an aspiring director, writer, and songwriter. He is not used to speaking in the third person. Justin greatly admires this story for its touching themes, relevant dialogue on crossing to el otro lado, and characters relatable to his Chicano heritage. In addition to assistant directing this show, Justin is currently directing Hope Floats for The Playwrights Project, and is also in production on an original puppet-filled horror/comedy musical film entitled Dreamy Drive. In his sparse free time, Justin builds LEGO, watches campy 80s movies, develops games, and writes musicals. This show is Justin’s first time directing scenes for the stage, and this bio is Justin’s first time writing a bio. He hopes he’s doing a good job. Justin would like to personally thank everyone involved in this amazing show, but he is rapidly approaching the word limit.

SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.
You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.
The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
