PLAYBILL

Welcome to this very special concert production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s poignant musical, Merrily We Roll Along.

This is more than just a performance; it is a true celebration of community and collaboration, capturing the very spirit of what makes the performing arts at SDSU so vibrant.

We are particularly excited to be collaborating with the School of Music and Dance with the exceptional sound of the SDSU Jazz Ensemble II, whose musicality elevates Sondheim’s complex, jazzy score to exhilarating new heights. This interdisciplinary effort provides an invaluable real-world experience for all our students and allows us all to grow together.

This unique production is co-directed by myself and one of our own, the incredibly talented Amy Schwartzreich, an alumna of the prestigious MFA Musical Theatre program. Working alongside Amy is not just a joy, but a meaningful reminder of the talent that our programs cultivate and the deep connections that last long after graduation. Her professional insight, paired with the academic rigor of our faculty and staff, offers an unparalleled learning environment for our current students.

We invite you to make this performance just the start of your journey with us. This production of Merrily We Roll Along officially kicks off the School of Theatre, Television, and Film’s 2025–2026 Season of plays and musicals, a season we promise will be filled with powerful performances, inventive designs, and challenging new works

Enjoy the show!

This production contains theatrical fog/haze and flashing/strobe lighting. Produced by Special Arrangement with Music Theatre International.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“It’s our time, breathe it in; worlds to change and worlds to win.” —Stephen Sondheim, “Our Time”

When Merrily We Roll Along first opened on Broadway in 1981, it was one of the biggest flops in musical theatre history—closing after just 16 performances. That failure was especially shocking because the show was created by two Broadway legends at the height of their careers: composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and director Harold Prince. The duo had just come off a decade of groundbreaking hits, including Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd. Expectations were sky-high. But Merrily, with its reverse chronology, youthful cast, and unflinching look at disillusionment, left audiences confused and critics unmoved. What was meant to be the next great Sondheim-Prince triumph instead ended their legendary partnership—at least for a time.

And yet, this show refused to fade away. Over the decades, Merrily has been rediscovered, reimagined, and ultimately redeemed—culminating in its 2023 Broadway revival, which finally earned the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

At its core, Merrily We Roll Along is about time—how success, ambition, and compromise can alter who we are and how we see the people we love. The story unfolds in reverse, tracing three friends in New York City from the fractures of adulthood back to the spark of youthful idealism. Along the way, it asks piercing questions about friendship, loyalty, and the cost of “selling out” in pursuit of the artistic dream.

What I find most moving about Merrily is its hope: the idea that even when life rolls backward, we can still remember who we once were—and perhaps, who we might be again.

This production of Merrily We Roll Along is being presented in concert—a format that emphasizes the music, lyrics, and storytelling rather than elaborate sets or staging. In a staged concert of a musical, the audience can first focus on the brilliance of the score, lyrics, and the emotional journey of the characters. This style has become a celebrated tradition in the theater world, from the acclaimed Encores! series at New York City Center, which revives rarely seen musicals in concert form, to the New York Philharmonic’s concert productions of classics like Company, Sweeney Todd, and South Pacific. These performances invite us to listen closely—to rediscover the heart of the piece through its music and words.

Take a Seat!

SDSU performing arts invites you to take part in an exciting opportunity to support its new Performing Arts District in a meaningful way by participating in the Take A Seat campaign.

You have the opportunity to Take A Seat in the spotlight and enjoy having your name, a sentiment, anniversary date, or the name of another person you wish to honor laser-engraved on an elegant nameplate placed on one of the theater seats. Your sponsorship will support performances, students, faculty, and the greatest needs of the SDSU performing arts program.

The engraving you select promises that you or your loved one will be a visible part of this dynamic Performing Arts District for years to come.
