SAMFORD SHINES AT CHRISTMAS IN THE VILLAGE

After months of dedicated behind-thescenes volunteer work, Samford Progress was thrilled to present this year’s Christmas in the Village - a festive celebration that lit up the heart of Samford with local businesses, musicians, community groups, markets and, of course, a touch of Christmas magic.

The festivities were officially opened in John Scott Park by our entertaining MC, Troy McGilvrey. From there, the Christmas cheer spilled up and down Main Street, where visitors wandered between musicians, food trucks, craft stalls and lively roving performers.

Main Street was brimming with activity. Samford Patisserie once again delighted crowds with its stunning Christmas window display and specialty treats, while Belle Property kept young festival-goers smiling with fairy floss and face painting. The Samford Valley Veterinary Hospital’s pet photo booth proved a crowd favourite, and classic car enthusiasts were drawn to a nostalgic display at FARSTA.

the Bayside Divas had the crowd singing along, and the Moreton Bay Big Band closed the evening with a finale full of festive spirit.

without Santa and he certainly arrived in style - touring the village in a vintage ute, escorted by our happy Samford Rural Fire Brigade volunteers. Children flocked to Wonderland in the RSL grounds thanks to Admire Dentistry, where MC David Reed kept the fun flowing and the local Scouts entertained the crowd. Little ones penned letters to Santa, browsed the beautiful Baffies books and enjoyed carols from the Samford Community Singers.

Local musical talent filled the Farmers Hall - sponsored by Samford Garage - as shoppers browsed the markets and enjoyed the food trucks. Back in John Scott Park, the carols, supported by Community Bank Samford, set the scene beautifully. McGrath Samford’s dunk tank was hilarious. The Clan Stuart Pipes & Drums impressed as always,

Community groups were out in force too. Samford Support Network lit up the evening with glow sticks, the CWA ladies tempted passers-by with homemade treats, Samford Men’s Shed showcased their fine woodwork, Samford Stags filled tummies with their burgers and Creative Samford , the Potters Collective and Samford Patchworkers offered an array of unique Christmas gifts.

There was kids craft from Rusty Bucket Floristry and face painting by Makers on Main. Station Street put on a show with Christmas Nick’s pet portraits, Christmas bauble and snowman ornament making.

No Christmas celebration is complete

The lights were once again a showstopper. Craig Doyle Real Estate dazzled with snow and sparkle, while Samford Valley Garden Centre outdid themselves with an extraordinary light display. Our heartfelt thanks go to every business that dressed their shopfronts in tinsel and cheer and planned such wonderful activities. There were 50 activities this year and your efforts truly brought Main Street and beyond to life.

And of course, none of this would be possible without our generous sponsors. Don’t miss our Christmas feature from page 24 - and be sure to thank them when you see them around town.

Thank you for joining us. We hope you loved this year’s Christmas in the Village as much as we loved bringing it to you.

THANKS SAMFORD

Five years ago, Samford Meals on Wheels began delivering meals to our local community and this was celebrated with our annual volunteer Christmas party. Some of those original volunteers are still delivering meals with their kind and friendly dispositions.

Over the 5 years, 174 people have volunteered with the Samford service delivering meals, helping in the kitchen and office and at our Bunnings BBQs. Almost 30,000 main meals were delivered to 340 clients over this time.

It has been a slightly challenging year after Cyclone Alfred damaged the main kitchen, but the volunteers have generously

2025 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Samford Progress was inspired by this year’s Community Volunteer Award nominees. We thank our judging panel of volunteer Samford Progress members, who had the very difficult task of selecting the most deserving of these amazing volunteers.

Announced at Christmas in the Village, this year, nominees came from the fields of health and wellness, our native environment, and community support services. Thanks to Hazell Bros for sponsoring this award.

Here are the 2025 nominees:

Nominated by:

Samford Parklands parkrun.

Now in its second year, Samford Parklands parkrun came into fruition after 12 months of detailed planning and coordination. Tricia’s role as coordinator includes overseeing the team of volunteers and liaising with local council to ensure the parkrun meets regulations. The 5km park run is held on a weekly basis, regularly attracting between 100-150 participants of all ages.

“Without her passion, hard work and positivity, the parkrun would never have been established. Her enthusiasm and commitment is inspiring”.

PETER STORER.

Nominated by:

Native Plants Qld – Samford Branch.

For around three decades, Peter has been encouraging the cultivation of Australian

native flora and the conservation of local fauna which have thrived in the restored habitats. He shares his passion, knowledge and skills with not only our community, but also with a vast number of followers.

Since 2012, Peter has been the lead coordinator and facilitator of the Samford Eco-Corridor initiative, a subcommittee of Samford Progress. This was established to help restore biodiversity to our local waterways which had suffered over time due to the various pressures of urbanisation as well as invasive flora and fauna.

A dedicated scientist and educator, Peter works with local schools, TAFE and university students to raise awareness of local native plants and ecosystems and the importance of conserving them.

“Peter’s longstanding contributions to improve our community’s native eco-system is shadowed only by his passion, drive and dedication.”

CAROLYN SCHUMACHER.

Nominated by: Samford Support Network

A volunteer with SSN for approximately 8 years, Carolyn is hardworking, committed and kind. Her duties are many and include organising and providing transport for clients to meet their needs. She also helps coordinate and facilitate the regular social outings for clients. Carolyn is not only always happy to help and support anyone in the SSN group, but her caring nature extends to her neighbours and community members. She is the first to offer her help and assistance to both the SSN Management Committee and the clients they support. She has a wonderful, warm and friendly personality with a great sense of fun.

“Carolyn’s dedication, compassion and commitment to helping others inspires us”.

BEST TABLE STARS

There was a lot of fun in John Scott Park as our community competed in the Best Dress Table Competition, sponsored by Grassforce. There were angels and Christmas trees and dogs and lights. I’m sure you will agree the winners (pictured) were the brightest and cheeriest of them all!

Thank you to everyone who participated. It was so lovely to see the creativity.

New Safety Rules for Vitamin B6: What Our Community Needs to Know

Patients are being encouraged to check their vitamin supplements after the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced new rules aimed at reducing the risk of nerve damage linked to long-term use of high-dose vitamin B6.

Vitamin B6 is a common ingredient in multivitamins, energy supplements, and products marketed for muscle support, where it is often combined with magnesium. However, the TGA warns that taking too much B6 for a prolonged period can lead to peripheral neuropathy - a type of nerve damage that causes tingling, burning, or numbness in the hands and feet.

What’s Changing?

To improve safety, the TGA has introduced new controls based on the amount of vitamin B6 in each daily dose:

• 50 mg or less: Available in supermarkets and general retail stores

• More than 50 mg up to 200 mg: Available only from a pharmacist, who can provide guidance.

• More than 200 mg: Prescription required.

These changes will come into effect on 1 June 2027.

Do You Really Need Vitamin B6?

For most people, deficiency is rare. Adults typically need only 1.3 - 1.7 mg of vitamin B6 per day - an amount easily met through a normal, balanced diet. Certain groups, including older adults or people with alcohol dependence, obesity, or specific medical conditions, may occasionally require supplementation.

any vitamin B6 concerns, including checking supplement labels and determining whether their current dose is safe. They recommend that anyone experiencing tingling or numbness in their hands or feet to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Pharmacists are an excellent first point of contact for patients unsure about the amount of vitamin B6 in their supplements, or whether they need it at all.

Star Midfielder Makes Her Mark

Promising young footballer Milly has had a year of change, challenge, and achievementone that has only strengthened her ambition to one day don the Matildas’ iconic green and gold.

Just twelve months ago, Milly was celebrating an undefeated two-year run with her Patricks Road State School team. Since then, she has moved schools and stepped into an entirely new environment. While leaving her old teammates felt strange at first, Milly says the transition has been a positive one. Her new school team welcomed her warmly, helping her settle in both on and off the field. Learning a new playing style and forming new friendships has been “a good challenge,” she says—one she’s thoroughly enjoying.

That adaptability proved vital this year when Milly achieved one of her major goals: selection in the Queensland state soccer team. The honour was the result of months of dedicated work, including extra training sessions and focused technical practice. The moment she learned she had made the squad was “amazing,” she says—but the

news only got better. Milly was also chosen as team captain, a role she embraced with pride.

Wearing maroon and leading what she describes as “a talented group of girls,” Milly focused on keeping the team positive and united. Their efforts paid off, with the squad securing a bronze medal - an achievement she calls a meaningful reward for their hard work.

Despite the excitement of this year’s accomplishments, Milly’s long-term vision remains unchanged. She still dreams of representing Australia as a Matilda, a goal that grows stronger with every training session and competition.

“It’s 100% still my dream,” she says. “Watching them play inspires me. I know it takes a lot of hard work, but I’m ready to keep pushing.”

Reflecting on her journey over the past year, Milly says she has discovered a new level of determination within herself. The challenges of changing schools, forming new team connections, and competing at higher levels have taught her resilience and confidence. Most importantly, she’s learned the value of teamwork and maintaining a positive attitude. “No matter what happens, I always want to improve and keep enjoying the game,” she said.

Whatever comes next for Milly, one thing is clear: her passion for the game is only getting stronger and she’s ready for whatever challenge comes her way.

Australian Warning System

As with bushfires, it is important to keep informed about other severe weather events like the recent storms which caused extensive damage. The Australian Warning System (AWS) has been designed to provide information and warnings during emergencies and disasters Australia wide. There are three warning levels with icons which change to indicate the hazard – bushfire, cyclone, flood, extreme weather and extreme heat.

An incident has started. There is no

immediate danger. Stay up to date in case the situation changes.

WATCH & ACT (Orange)

There is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now to protect you and your family.

EMERGENCY WARNING (Red)

This is the highest level of warning. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Any delay puts your life at risk. Each warning level has a set of Call to Action statements giving clear advice on what to do.

For all emergencies phone Triple Zero – 000.

’Tis the Season

This month we have been celebrating, connecting, cooking and crafting at Samford Playgroup. We celebrated a very special Christmas Craft Day, proudly supported by Bunnings, and the children were thrilled to decorate their own pots, each one uniquely designed with splashes of festive colour. The children were delighted to take their beautiful creations home, to give to their loved ones.

We’ve created beautiful Christmas cards in all the seasonal shades, sculpted Christmas trees from our green playdough, and enjoyed the indulgent scents of gingerbread, peppermint and cinnamon wafting through our sessions. Over the past few weeks, the children have decorated their own gingerbread stars, used loose parts to design gingerbread people, and tried very hard not to nibble on the delicious-smelling gingerbread playdough.

We’ve also had a magical time exploring snow-themed sensory play. We mixed bicarb soda and shaving foam to create fluffy, frosty “snow.” The children loved shaping their own little snowmen complete with mini carrot noses and stick arms.

As the year wraps up, we want to take a moment to thank you for an incredible year at Samford Playgroup. To our dedicated volunteers, thank you for the countless hours, the energy, and the heart you pour into creating a magical space for our families. We also extend our gratitude to the wonderful local businesses and community groups that have supported us throughout the year. And, of course, to all our members who join us each week - your joy, laughter, and enthusiasm make playgroup what it is.

Samford Playgroup is run entirely by volunteers, local people who want to give back to this amazing community. If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out.

Holiday Opening Hours: Please keep an eye on our social media pages for updates on any sessions we may open over the holiday period. Please note that days and times may vary, as our volunteer team will also be taking a well-earned break.

From all of us at Samford Playgroup, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your holidays be joyful, restful, and filled with connection.

The school holidays are here - a time for kids to enjoy outdoor activities, sports, & family fun! We want to help you keep your family’s smiles safe & healthy throughout the break. Here are some handy tips to protect your teeth these holidays.

1. Play It Safe: Mouthguards for Sports and Activities

Whether your child is playing contact sport, or simply riding their scooter, accidents can happen. Wearing a custom fitted mouthguard is comfortable to wear, and one of the best ways to protect teeth from chips, cracks, or even tooth loss.

2. Poolside Precautions

Running around a slippery pool deck might seem like fun, but it’s one of the most common causes of dental injuries during the summer. Falls can lead to chipped or knocked-out teeth, which may require immediate dental care. Encourage your children to walk, not run, near pools to prevent accidents & keep their smiles intact.

3. Summer Snack Ideas: Healthy for Teeth and Tummies. Snack time can be both fun and tooth-friendly with these simple ideas:

• Fresh Fruit Skewers: Combine chunks of watermelon, pineapple, and strawberries for a naturally sweet treat. These fruits are hydrating and low in processed sugar.

• Veggie Sticks with Hummus: Carrot, celery, and cucumber sticks pair perfectly with a creamy dip for a satisfying crunch.

• Cheese Cubes and Whole-Grain Crackers: This calcium-rich combo helps strengthen teeth and is an easy grab-and-go snack.

• Frozen Yogurt Bites: Use unsweetened, full-fat yogurt mixed with fresh fruit & freeze in molds for a cooling, tooth-friendly dessert.

Ensure your family drinks plenty of water, to rinse away food particles and stay hydrated. If your child does experience a dental emergency, our team is ready to help. We can also create custom mouthguards tailored to your child’s needs for maximum comfort and protection. Contact our team today!

A Fresh Crew, New Energy for ’26 the Year of the Horse

Supporting her on the Management committee are Kylie Marschner, Louise Coulson, and Ivanka Menkin, and the return of Belinda Warman as Treasurer powerhouse quartet that blends experience, and the organisational skills most of us dream of.

Making up the team that will run our Year of the Horse events is a group of superhero volunteers filling our general committee roles. A special shout-out to those who generously put their hands up for some of the club’s key coordination roles that directly impact the member experience:

Stephanie Hullet and Natalie Tite keeping our social media engagement together with Niqui Branchu owning our publicity and brand identity and welcome back Jenny Macnamara returning to corral our social get togethers in ‘26.

With talent and passion like this leading us 2026 will be an elevated and forward year for the Samford Equestrian Group.

What Price a Sustainable Community?

Samford has a wonderful history of people working together to build a sustainable community. And it has a sometimes challenging history of having to fight to stop developments that threaten the very sustainability that the community is trying to build and maintain.

The community has had some significant victories. At the same time we are currently facing arguably the most difficult challenge of all with an unwanted development application submitted for a 10 metre high construction and traffic nightmare at the otherwise welcoming roundabout entrance to Samford. If approved at court in the new year, it would trigger the end of Samford as we know it. The famous ‘Samford feel’ would be no more. Just another suburb.

So let’s hope the amazing work, financial investment and advocacy by Samford Progress reaps a just reward. Heartfelt thanks to the Samford Progress crew – let’s hope we truly have a long lasting happy new year.

The contribution the Village Pump makes to connecting and showcasing the views, aspirations and energy of the community can never be overstated. Big thanks also to all the community groups that continue to build sustainable businesses, sustainable households and sustainable organisations.

Green Street and the Samford Sustainable Business Network is proud to be part of what makes our community tick and we relish the opportunity to work with Samford Progress’s Sustainable Samford Group and others to provide value where we are able. Check out www.greenstreet.net.au or call

Have a safe and joyful festive season. Howard Neilsen

SSN is not an aged care provider. Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.

Samford Stingrays has announced their captaincy team for the 2025–26 swim season — and, in an exciting first for the club, this year includes a co-captaincy role.

Maddy Shea has been named Club Captain; Lily Belling and Georgia Tkacz will serve together as Senior Race Co-Captains; and Evelyn Taylor has been appointed Junior Race Captain.

This stellar leadership group wasted no time showing their enthusiasm, stepping confidently into their roles at the Dayboro Dolphins swim meet on 9 November. The Stingrays had a standout performance, with their 13 athletes bringing home an impressive 48 medals, while also breaking 9 Dayboro pool records. Equally commendable was the strong show of team spirit, with injured swimmers still attending to support their teammates from the sidelines.

Club Captain Maddy Shea is a rare athlete whose leadership is rooted in action. She is known for giving everything she haswhether in training or competition - and measuring her progress only against her own times. In a sport where comparison can easily dampen joy, Maddy’s self-driven approach is refreshing and sets a powerful example for younger swimmers.

Senior Race Co-Captain Lily Belling is one of the hardest-working athletes in the squad. She plays the long game, understanding that success in swimming is built over months and years. Lily manages the highs and lows of the sport with maturity, using setbacks

not as stumbling blocks but as lessons that strengthen her resolve and sharpen her competitive edge.

Senior Race Co-Captain Georgia Tkacz exemplifies tenacity and resilience. Known as “G” within the club, she has battled ongoing injuries yet remains deeply committed. She continues to train on a modified program - something many athletes would struggle with - and still competes using a pull-only technique. Georgia’s journey is not just about having a Plan B; it’s about working through every challenge, with grit and determination.

Junior Race Captain Evelyn Taylor, nine years old, is already an athlete to watch.

Part of a powerhouse cohort of talented 9–10-year-old swimmers, Evelyn combines a sharp mind with natural athletic ability. She absorbs every technical detail her coaches teach and applies it with purpose. She knows exactly which club records are within reach - and she trains with the intent to chase them down.

Athleticism aside, this leadership line up is a fine example of compassion, kindness, and community.

Congratulations to the 2025–26 Samford Stingrays leadership team. The club is in excellent hands.

Rotary Club of Samford Valley

Welcome Back to Samford

No doubt many of you remember Lorelle Holcroft. She was the first Deputy Principal appointed to Samford State School and held that position for 21 years from the midnineties. During this time, the school grew immensely. She introduced the Student Council, EarlyAct (introducing the concept to Australia) and Chaplaincy to the school community. She also joined Samford Rotary where she was a very active member serving our community. After retiring in 2016, Lorelle left Samford, but didn’t leave Rotary. She transferred to the Albany Creek Club continuing her 30 year involvement.

As already mentioned, Lorelle retired in 2016, but her version of retirement is a little different from most. She changed fields from education to biology (malacology), enrolling in a MPhil at Griffith University, working on a family of tiny snails, the Charopidae from mid-eastern Queensland.

In 2019, Lorelle married fellow malacologist Dr John Stanisic, forming a partnership that blended shared scientific passions with a deep personal bond.

In 2023, she completed a PhD on a group of Queensland land snails, confirming 11 species and naming four new species of camaenid, one of which was named for Robert Irwin from Australia Zoo. The zoo is now trialling a captive breeding program and the first group of babies have hatched.

Apart from her research, she and John now enjoy sharing the science of invertebrates and land snails among school students, community groups and at science festivals such as the World Science Festival. Their links with the Queensland Museum and Australian Museum have enabled them to create a unique bridge between commercial and research institutions to the benefit of both.

While having written numerous scientific and popular articles on the distribution and documentation of land snails in eastern Australia, Lorelle and John published A Guide to Australian Land Snails in 2022, winning a Whitley commendation in 2023.

Lorelle also presented the CT White lecture to the Queensland Naturalist in June, 2024 and was delighted to find a former Samford

State School student and his parent in the audience.

We are so fortunate to have Lorelle come back to join Samford Rotary. Welcome back – it’s great to see you enjoying retirement. Rob and Carol Robinson

NATIVE BEE DREAMING

‘We take care of our stingless bees and blue banded bees by looking after the plants and flowers. We are all unique. Bee you, Bee kind, Bee long.’

Samford Kindy recently welcomed First Nations artist Jennifer Kent to our community, who worked alongside the children, families and educators to create a very special collaborative mural.

Inspired by our natural surroundings, the artwork features delicate paperbark flowers and grevilleas. Each child, together with their family, added their unique thumbprints, which were later transformed into bees.

During her visit, Jennifer shared her knowledge about native bees. We learnt that Stingless bees live in colonies, often in branches of trees. We also learnt that the Blue Banded Bee, which is more solitary, has females that dig out nests in the ground, while the males roost on flowers overnight. We also learnt about the very important job of bees - pollination.

Jennifer also shared some Jinibara

language with us while she spent time with the children. Now, each day at Kindy we greet one another by saying “Galang Meng”, which means good day.

This meaningful project was made possible through the Moreton Bay Region

Council Community Grant, allowing us to create a lasting artwork that celebrates creativity, sustainability and caring for country.

The Kindy children shared some of their thoughts on our new mural:

Imogen: “It’s a big one and it has all the thumb prints on it that look like little bees!”

Ezra: “I loved it because mum and I got to put our thumb prints on it.”

Evie: “We made it so everyone knows who we are!”

Bas: “We put our thumbs on it!”

SAMFORD PARKLANDS parkrun

Each Saturday morning, a stream of runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators fill the air with conversation, laughter and cheers at Samford Parklands parkrun. Since launching in September 2024, nearly 4000 people have participated in the free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event.

Speaking with Volunteer Event Directors, Paul Delaney and Chris Willmann, it is clear Samford Parklands parkrun reflects parkrun’s global values of humility and family-first.

“I always wanted a parkrun down the road,” says Paul, “but it is so much more. There is a spirit and enthusiasm that has resulted in a local parkrun which is uniquely Samford – warm, welcoming and inclusive!”

Local businesses banded together to raise the start-up funding, many of whom have also joined the 275 people who have volunteered over the last 15 months.

Wearing red vests and welcoming smiles, Samford’s parkrun olunteers are enthusiastic and encouraging.

Chris adds “Volunteers make parkrun possible. The roles are simple to learn and

you can volunteer every week or once a year!”

“I love volunteering and cheering runners and walkers on in their endeavour to have fun and reach their own goals,” says Fay Jennings, who has just achieved her 25th volunteering milestone.

Local families have found parkrun to be a great way to share an active experience together. Whether up for a fast run, or keen for a slow stroll, there are no time limits, no one finishes last thanks to the volunteer Tailwalker, and all ages and abilities are welcome.

It’s something Neil Frawley, a volunteer Run Director who runs with his wife, daughters and in-laws appreciates: “It is great to see grandparents, parents and kids (big and small) volunteering together and when there’s a race amongst family members in the last few metres to the finish line, you can’t help but laugh.”

The reach of Samford Parklands parkrun extends beyond Saturdays as regulars greet each other in the community and new friendships are made. “I love our parkrun

community here in Samford! Saturday morning has definitely now become one of the highlights of my week,” shares Sharon Vacher. (pictured)

In December, Samford Parklands parkrun will be gearing up to celebrate Christmas with some merry fun planned and for 1 January, a special New Year parkrun kicks off 2026.

We meet at 6:50am near the Bowls Club in Samford Parklands. All are welcome to join in, whether you want to run fast, jog gently, walk and talk, volunteer or cheer! Contact samfordparklands@parkrun.com for more information.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club

Congratulations to the volunteers, sponsors and members who have all helped make SGVPC a fabulous club to be part of in 2025.

Thank you to Rhys our dedicated President, Adam and Fiona our amazing canteen and coffee baristas, Erin our Chief Instructor and all the other instructors who have given up their time. Special mention to Justine, who has been awarded life

membership at the club. Justine has been involved in the club for over 15 years now and has been a wealth of knowledge and support for the club and members. Her ‘can do’ attitude and dedication for all aspects of the club - how it should run, horses in general and everything in between - is impressive and an asset to SVGPC. The club has been more than lucky to have Justine on board for guidance and support.

We would like to wish the local equine community a safe and merry Christmas and a horsey New Year.

OUT & ABOUT

Samford Bowls Club

We have almost reached the end of the bowling year. Presentation Day was held on November 29th with all winners of Club competitions for 2025 presented with their badges. There is no time to rest though, as the draw for 2026 competitions are already up and running. We do play through the holiday season but without the formality of uniforms.

The spring season of Village Barefoot Bowls has concluded with ‘Bias a Jack’ taking out the winner’s trophy. Equal runners up were teams ‘Bushrangers and ‘Battlers’. We will see everyone back for the February / March season 2026. Contact Allan 0429 919 486.

During this year, members of all Queensland Bowls Clubs were asked to complete a survey on a proposal of whether the 2026 Pennant season would move to an Open Gender model for Division 1, 2 and 3 statewide with 75% of the responses voting yes. Open Gender means teams can be made up of men, women, or a mix of both. Samford club has been well ahead in Open Gender as all our social days are mixed and all positions are open to either male or female.

The Australian Jackaroos bowls team has been on a tour of Glasgow preparing for next year’s Commonwealth Games. They have stamped their authority on the Scottish soil, producing a commanding display in a multi-test match series. The Australians, which included a number from Queensland,

rivals is clear: when the Commonwealth Games roll into Glasgow, the green and gold will be ready to fight for the podium. Our 2026 calendar is almost completed. Social bowls will still be held Tuesday morning and afternoon, Wednesday morning and Saturday afternoon. There will be our ‘extra curriculum’ activities that members of the community are invited to, such as the Fashion Parade, Trivia nights, Give Bowls a Go evenings, Come and Try Mornings and Village Bowls.

Happy Christmas from us to you. Stay safe over the holiday season and we will see you on the Green in 2026.

Rotarians Meet their Sponsored Horse

The Rotary Club of Samford Valley is a long-time and valued sponsor of horses at the Samford RDA centre – and the new management team recently met its sponsored horse, Peter Pan. Peter Pan is one of the most experienced horses in the RDA herd and is much loved by his regular riders for his cheeky personality. The Rotarians’ annual sponsorship helps to meet the costs involved in feeding and caring for Peter Pan.

Led by Club President Paul Jackson, the visiting Rotarians also viewed the RDA facilities at Samford Showgrounds and met RDA President Michael Costello for an overview of the RDA program and activities.

Also attending was Bob Millar AOM, a long-term Rotarian and supporter of Samford RDA who is stepping back from commitments. Bob was a Division 11 Councillor and has always been a strong community advocate for many valuable not-for-profit organisations. He joined the

group to make introductions and share stories about Samford RDA and the area. Bob’s contribution to Samford RDA over the years is deeply appreciated.

QCWA Samford

CWA Samford would like to wish their members and the local community a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Thank you Samford for supporting us throughout the year. We look forward to working with the community again in 2026. Our final meeting for 2025 was held on 19 November. Our International Officer Marnie reminded us how much fun we had with the Product of the Year – Macadamiasmany tasty recipes were eaten and enjoyed; and the Country of Study – Ontario - we all learnt many interesting facts about its culture and geography.

In 2026 the Product of the Year will be Strawberries and the Country of Study will be Samoa. The International Study Conference is being held on 13th - 15th February 2026 in Ipswich.

After the meeting, members and guests celebrated the Festive Season by enjoying a scrumptious Christmas lunch with a special Reindeer cake for Christmas dessert made by Margerite. A wonderful thank you goes to Gail and her helpers for supplying a true Christmas lunch for everyone.

A big thank you goes to Maria, CWA treasurer, for successfully obtaining a grant from City of Moreton Bay Council to help with our CWA Christmas function. Many, many thanks to the City of Moreton Bay Council for their generosity.

Our Christmas staff at Christmas in the Village on 6 December was a huge success with visitors spoilt for choice with our homemade goodies. It was a Christmas wonderland inside the CWA Hall. The children always love to see what delights they can find, especially the Gingerbread men and houses. Funds raised will support people in need.

CWA Samford is on hand for your catering requirements, small to medium functions and other occasions. Please call Fiona: 0421 353 272. Our air-conditioned hall is available for hire in Main Street, Samford. Give Margerite a call: 0468 667 602.

Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing

From Texas Hold ‘em to Dancing Queen to Too Darn Hot, Yuhan has kept our Tuesday Let’s Dance class hoppin and boppin and having so much fun. Whilst Yuhan moves as the professional dancer she is, all levels are welcomed and encouraged. It has been a delight to watch the growing confidence of these ladies over the last 5 weeks. We would like to keep this class going in Term One 2026 and will add an evening class running on a Thursday, time to be announced. Please contact Yuhan on 0478 806 878.

Our Pilates and Functional Patterns sessions continue to run from Monday through to Saturday. Many of our clients prefer to attend Private or Semi Private sessions which gives both instructor and client the precious time to decrease pain, if any, work at the client’s ability and pace, whilst increasing the challenge for each individual as required. Our Group classes offer friendship and laughter whilst still working to maintain or increase strength and mobility to allow freedom of movement for all our daily tasks.

In 2026, I would like to offer a class specifically for cyclists. This would be for both Road and Mountain Biking. If this is something that would interest you and assist you with recovery from rides, please contact me on 0432 269 472.

CHRONICLE CUP FINAL

A hot and exciting day for the Chronicle Cup final played on Sunday 7 December. The winners - Samford Rangers (pictured) defeated Samford Village People.

New Outdoor Drama Project for Children

Local Samford artist Emma Che Raethke has secured funding to develop an imaginative new outdoor drama experience for children aged 7-12. The project, Walkie Talkies in Our Neighbourhood, invites children to use walkie-talkies to explore, communicate, and reimagine their local surroundings in playful, story-rich ways.

The creative development team includes locals Emma Che Raethke and Sarah Winter, and Katie Fletcher. Emma and Katie are also the artist-educators behind Playscape, a locally run outdoor drama company offering programs that build confidence, creativity, and connection through naturebased storytelling.

This summer, Playscape is hosting a fullday holiday workshop: Place Makers - A Playscape Holiday Adventure on Tuesday 13 January, 9am–3pm at the Samford Bowls

Club. This is a day of outdoor drama, creative exploration, snacks included, plus a live comedy performance.

Details and bookings: https://www. playscapecreatives.com/holidays.

Walkie Talkies in Our Neighbourhood is supported by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund and the Regional Arts Development Fund, delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government and City of Moreton Bay.

As the school year ends, there’s an inevitable tendency to reflect back on what’s happened through the year, and 2025 has been an eventful one for Baffies Oan Books. This quaint sanctuary for booklovers was started up three years ago by local literary buff Fiona Taylor. Fiona credits American Author Ann Patchett’s collection of essays, These Precious Days, for pushing her to make her long held dream a reality, and she did it! She opened a bookshop in the Lifestyle Centre, Samford. With Ann’s famous bookshop in Nashville, Tennessee, Parnassus, as an inspiration, Baffies Oan Books came to life.

Sadly for the community, the time has come for Fiona to move on to her next grand adventure and we are pleased to announce the bookshop has changed hands, with local mums Leeanne Goldsmith, Janette Zlamal and Annette Wiseman taking over the reigns as owners.

Baffies Oan Books will remain a slow lane in our community, where book lovers old and young will gather. The bookshop

intends to continue as a venue to showcase the work of our lovely local authors and artists, and as a space where everyone is welcomed (well-behaved dogs too) - we do love a good chat and have a few comfortable chairs for the quieter souls.

Baffies Oan Books is looking forward to strengthening its bond with local schools and the wider community, and, of course, getting more kids reading! As parents to children of various ages, this is a big goal for us in 2026.

The bookstore is also hoping to bring more to the community, such as new bookclubs, art workshops and Dungeons and Dragons sessions. If any of this interests you, please drop in for a chat. Ann and Parnassus remain an inspiration, and if you are on social media and love books, their Instagram account is a must.

Baffies Oan Books is extending its opening hours as Christmas approaches. From December 15, they will be as follows: Monday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. We will close on Christmas Eve, December 24 at

3pm and open again on December 27 at 9.30am, when we will return to our preChristmas hours displayed on our door, website and internet. All of us at Baffies Oan Books wish you a safe, blessed and joyful Christmas season.

My First Bookclub which caters to our littlest of readers, is on every Tuesday at 9am through the holidays. This event is free and no booking is required. Other bookclubs will start up again in January. Please see our website for other events. www.baffiesonabooks.com.au

PINE RIVERS UPDATE

Disaster Funding

The recent storms have had a massive impact on the community, knocking down powerlines the heavy and intense storms left many in the dark. The response has been delayed for this event, lacking central coordination and an eligibility explanation. Following the storms and the widespread outages, I and other members of parliament wrote to the minister requesting the state government activate and provide Emergency Hardship Assistance for our community. After days of waiting, the majority of our community can now access this crucial funding. We will continue to fight for all impacted residents in our community. You can check your eligibility here: https://www.qld.gov.au/ community/disasters-emergencies/ disasters/money-finance/ eligibility-apply/qld-southern-coast-severestorms-november-2025

Applications for the Emergency Hardship Assistance close on 23rd December. December Cost of Living Give Away Time is running out to get in the running to win my December Cost of Living Give Away. In the Christmas spirit this month

I am giving away a $100 voucher to Warburtons Butchers and a $100 voucher to TWIGS Toy Boutique. The giveaway runs until 16th December so be sure to check out my social media as to how to enter.

International Volunteer Day 5th December was International Volunteer Day. It is a day where we celebrate and thank all volunteers who have given up their time to provide their skills and knowledge to advance the work of local community groups. Without volunteers many of the clubs, not-for-profits, charities and community groups would not be able to function and may cease to exist at all. If you know anyone who is an active volunteer as part of any group, be sure to acknowledge them as they are the unsung heroes of our community. Thank you to all of our community volunteers for your continued effort.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year I wish everyone a wonderful and safe Christmas and a happy New Year. For those who will be working through the Christmas and New Year period I thank you, without your effort and commitment, the community would be left without many of the services we rely on.

an eye on weather updates, plan ahead and stay safe during severe storms.

As we assess damage from recent storms, I want to thank our first responders, Energex workers and everyone who rolled up their sleeves to help with the recovery efforts. The Samford community is no stranger to storm impacts. While bad weather like this tests us, it also unites us and highlights the wonderful community spirit that shines through.

You’ll soon receive my Christmas card in the mail. Inside, you will find a handy list of important phone numbers for your fridge, so you have them close by over summer.

It was amazing to be at Samford Christmas in the Village recently. This beautiful event run by Samford Progress supporting local small businesses, artists and entertainers brings together an entire community to celebrate Christmas and the end of another year. I loved meeting with so many of you and it is a highlight of my Christmas season!

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season.

DICKSON UPDATE

As we head into the festive season, I want to say how great it’s been to meet so many locals and to see our community shine at Christmas events, school graduations - even through storms and recovery.

Here’s what’s been happening around Samford from your Federal MP.

After years, Australia’s outdated environment laws have finally been reformed. The Albanese Labor Government’s landmark new environmental laws recently passed Parliament, ensuring our laws are fit for purpose - protecting our natural heritage while giving businesses certainty and promoting productivity. It includes establishing Australia’s first ever national, independent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA will enforce one strong set of national rules, dish out serious consequences for environmental offenders, conduct proper environmental monitoring and provide more transparent decision making. This is about delivering for both the environment and the economy.

As the school year ends and families get ready for holidays, please remember we’re now in storm season. Make sure you keep

Meet and Greet

November’s first Saturday of the month Coffee and Chat morning tea was another successful event, with 22 members enjoying a morning cuppa and a catch up before the Christmas festivities got underway. There was plenty to talk about, upcoming travel, Christmas family gatherings, and all things happening in life. The room was filled with chatter, laughs and also a raffle just to make the morning complete. It was great fun. This morning is just one of many outings and events the ladies of Brendale Evening VIEW enjoy.

As we approach the Christmas season, our members are again supporting The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal. Christmas is a great time to give to those in need as it can also be a very hard time for disadvantaged families.

V.I.E.W stands for the Voice, Interests & Education of Women - a national women’s volunteer organisation, exclusively supporting the education of children experiencing disadvantage through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program.

As a member of VIEW, you will join thousands of women who enjoy making new friends, attending social activities, fundraising and learning new skills. Our members enjoy monthly dinner meetings, hear from interesting guest speakers and have the satisfaction of helping others.

Why don’t you come along to our next dinner meeting in January? We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at Aspley Hornets Football Club, Carseldine, 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Can’t make the next dinner meeting? Come along on the first Saturday of the month to our Coffee and Chat – come early, come late, stay for lunch! We start at 10am,

the Bracken Ridge Tavern. These mornings are fun and a great opportunity to get to know other members.

Any queries, phone Gwen on 0419 768 031. The next morning tea is Saturday 3rd January. There is no December dinner meeting. Our first evening meeting for the year will be 20th January 2026 which includes our AGM.

LOCAL PLANTS

GIANT SPEAR LILY

The giant spear lily ( Doryanthes palmeri ) is a perennial, succulent, monocotyledonous (i.e. has only one seed leaf, like the grasses) plant. Originally classified in the Family Agavaceae due to its appearance, recent DNA studies have shown that it is younger than the agaves, evolving after the extinction of dinosaurs. It was given its own family, Doryanthaceae with a single genus. There are two species of Doryanthes, both endemic to Australia. Whilst the Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa) is only found in NSW, D. palmeri is indigenous to Northern NSW from the Mt. Warning caldera northwards to Springbrook and Killarney in south-east Queensland. In its natural environment, it grows on rocky volcanic outcrops in wet sclerophyll forests.

The Giant Spear Lily is a very long living plant that consists of rosettes of spear shaped leaves, to 3m tall. Each rosette produces a single, central flower stalk at about 6 years of age. This flower stalk may grow 5m high, the upper 1 – 1.2m bearing over 300 flowers. Each bisexual flower is

10cm long and 6 – 18cm wide. The weight of the flowers invariably causes the stalk to droop. Flowering is followed by tough, eggshaped seed pods, green-reddish in colour. Each pod contains about 20 flat seeds with a lateral wing that aids dispersal. After flowering, the rosette produces vegetative buds in the leaf axils that will form new rosettes, thus expanding the clump.

When in flower, this plant is so spectacular that it is not surprising that it was much sought after. Although each flowering of the plant produces a large number of seeds, it can be several years between flowering of a single clump. Between low overall seed production, specific ecological requirements in which the plant is found in the wild and avid seed collection by enthusiasts, D. palmeri became increasingly rare, to

the extent that the species was declared vulnerable in NSW and seed collection from wild plants is banned.

Doryanthes palmeri, with its succulent roots, is adapted to dry conditions. It can thrive in various soil types, including nutrient-deficient soils but prefers well drained, slightly acidic to neural conditions in full sun. The ribbed leaves provide extra support in windy environments. It is pollution tolerant, playground friendly and ideal to plant in areas requiring erosion control. The Giant Spear Lily grows well in pots and, with its strong architectural lines, makes a stunning feature plant in a large garden. While the flowers attract birds, bees and butterflies, the nectar, stems and roots are edible.
