Samford Rural Fire Brigade At the time of writing, we have been experiencing High to Extreme Fire Danger Ratings creating conditions where fires can spread quickly and become difficult to control. Local Fire Bans have been in place from the Queensland/New South Wales borders to the Gladstone area and in North Queensland inland to Charters Towers. Samford along with other nearby brigades have attended several fires within their areas.

Make sure your house number is clearly on display at the road and the entrance is well defined. Ensure there is adequate space for fire appliances to access your property both width (3m) and height (4m). For those on tank water, make sure a supply is available for firefighting and protecting structures. Well mown lawns make it easier for firefighters to defend your property. Do not risk using equipment (welding, slashing, mowing,

grinding) which could contribute to starting fires. If the task cannot be put off to a later date, it is suggested having a person on hand as a spotter for any fires which may start and be prepared to extinguish immediately. VILLAGE PUMP NOTICEBOARD LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As an Advocate for the families already impacted by aviation activity over the Samford District since the New Parallel Runway opened back in 2020 at Brisbane Airport, it’s disappointing to read Mr Livingstone’s criticism and vastly inaccurate assumptions in his Letter to the Editor in the latest Village Pump newspaper. Professor Foth’s representation for his Editorial presents accurate data from Brisbane and Archerfield Airport Master Plans for the whole of the Brisbane Airspace. Both Airports and Airservices Australia are making huge financial investments to cater for this upturn in aviation traffic. However, any attempt to predict the future impacts based on current flight path usage over the Samford District, or for any community for that matter, is flawed. Airport Masterplans make projections, but they cannot predict the split of aircraft or industry they will service in the future. What we do know is given our global location, most traffic, at least from Brisbane, comes and goes to the north which will have an impact on us. The future use of Air Taxi’s and Drones has not been factored into any future projections. Samford District Aircraft Action Group (SAAAG) member families once enjoyed a quiet rural residential lifestyle, but this has now been eroded 24/7, with thousands of frequent aircraft annually intruding our amenity, no matter the wind direction and runway selection at night. We are very concerned for not only the Samford District, but for all communities, as Brisbane Airport strives to become an Aerotropolis. We encourage anyone seeking an informed perspective on this issue to reach out to those of us who live it every day. It was surprising to read that Mr Bob Livingstone considers Samford to be unaffected by aircraft noise. I hope he appreciates his good fortune. Our area of Samford Valley has a vastly Page 2 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 10 OCTOBER 2025

different experience. Since the opening of the new runway in 2020 we have had a 10-fold increase in jet traffic. This results in aircraft noise significantly impacting our amenity and lifestyle. Daily the first and last sounds we hear are aircraft noise. Without entering a pointless debate about flight data, it is clear we are about 30km from the airport and are not runway aligned. Hopefully Airservices Australia will modify flight paths to provide affected residents some much needed respite. Mark Power

I write in response to Mr Livingstone’s letter in the Village Pump. Since the parallel runway opened in 2020, northerly flight paths have continued directly over my home in Samford Valley, usually between 5,000 and 7,000 feet. The big change is in numbers. Airservices Australia records show that in 2019, about 300 flights per year passed over my house - mostly distant and barely noticeable. By 2024, that number had soared to over 9,000 flights per year, many low and loud at 6,000 feet, and sometimes as low as 3,500 feet. On my deck I’ve measured commercial aircraft noise at 85db against a background ambient of around 40dB. For context, rock concerts/shows are usually capped at 80dB. Brisbane Airport flight numbers are set to increase over the next few years to 40,000 flights per year, with further massive expansion at Archerfield Airport still to come. This is why I strongly support SAAAG and the BFPCA - to protect not only my local community, but the liveability of South East Queensland as a whole. Steve Parry

LOCAL NEWS SAMFORD RANGERS FC ACHIEVES TIER 1 SILVER ACADEMY STATUS Samford Rangers Football Club is proud to announce that after a lot of hard work and development building year on year, it has officially been promoted to Tier 1 Silver status as an academy club, marking a major milestone in the club’s ongoing commitment to player development, coaching excellence, and community engagement. The recognition by Football Queensland places Samford Rangers among an elite group of clubs demonstrating exceptional standards in youth development, governance, coaching, facilities, and player welfare. The Tier 1 Silver status is a significant step up in the club accreditation pathway and reflects the club’s relentless dedication to building a high-performance environment from grassroots to elite levels. Club President Mathew Kilkelly expressed pride in the achievement: “This is a historic moment for Samford Rangers. The Tier 1 Silver accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our coaches, support staff, volunteers, players, and families. LOCAL NEWS TRANSFORMING LIVES TOGETHER: Community Bank Samford & Happy Paws Happy Hearts Every day, many young Australians wake up feeling isolated — disconnected from opportunity, others, and hope. Meanwhile, thousands of rescue animals wait in shelters, longing for connection. The Explore Employment Pathways Program by Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) bridges these worlds, creating life-changing outcomes for both people and animals. Thanks to a grant from Community Bank Samford, two Explore cohorts were supported between 2024 and 2025.

Held at the RSPCA Dakabin Animal Care Centre, the 24-week program welcomed nine participants living with disability or mental health challenges. Through learning, teamwork, and animal care, they gained confidence, skills, and a path towards employment. Guided by dedicated HPHH trainers, participants: • Built self-worth through caring for animals. • Gained practical skills like communication, resume writing, and financial basics. • Tackled everyday challenges such as public transport, nutrition, and job interview preparation.

Helped animals by socialising, training, and even writing adoption profiles — boosting both the animals’ and their own chances of success. Kristen, a 2024 Explore graduate, described the program as life-changing. Once overwhelmed and isolated, she found purpose through Explore. “It gave me the confidence to believe life will be okay — that just showing up can truly make a difference,” she said. Kristen is now a volunteer at HPHH and is working towards her dream of becoming a vet nurse. Over 38.5 hours, participants supported 77 rescue animals, enhancing their wellbeing and rehoming chances. Beyond the classroom, Community Bank Samford’s support provided hygiene kits, nutrition sessions, transport training, and interview outfits. A visit to Australia Zoo was a standout moment of recognition and celebration. The partnership went beyond funding. Bank representatives visited Dakabin to deliver real-world financial education and career advice. A Virtual Lending Specialist shared banking tips and personal insights, empowering participants to navigate their futures with confidence. “Community Bank Samford’s support helped shift the narrative,” said Jess Odgers, HPHH Regional Team Leader. “Explore graduates are now visible in the community, proud and empowered.” Graduates have progressed into placements with the RSPCA, hospitals, and community supermarkets. Some are pursuing further study in retail and early childhood education. Their growing independence and community contribution are a testament to the program’s success. Together, Happy Paws Happy Hearts and Community Bank Samford are lighting the path from isolation to inclusion — transforming lives, two hearts at a time.

LOCAL NEWS PAINTING IT FORWARD AT THE PONY CLUB Wilko Painting has once again rolled up their sleeves for the community, completing their second Paint It Forward project of the year, this time at the Samford Golden Valley Pony Club (SGVPC). Samford Valley resident and founder of Wilko Painting, Paul Wilkinson, is all about giving back to the community that he and his family love. “Samford is more than just where we live, it’s where our friends, neighbours, and kids grow up. Paint It Forward is our way of contributing something lasting to the community that has given us so much,” Paul said. This year with the support of Dulux, the Wilko Painting team gave the club’s cross-country horse jumps a bold new vibrant look. Not only do the freshly painted jumps look spectacular, they also provide a practical benefit: painted jumps are safer than bare timber. The colours improve visibility, helping horses and riders

better judge distances and heights, which ultimately enhances safety during training and competition. “Painting may seem like a small thing, but for riders, it makes a world of difference,” Paul explained. The Wilko team donated their time and expertise free of charge, while Master Painters supplied a barbecue lunch for the volunteers. The project brought together local club members, families and volunteers in a day filled with community spirit, teamwork, and plenty of colour. In June 2023, SGVPC proudly opened its newly renovated Cross Country Course, which accommodates events and training from 45cm to 105cm (1 Star) heights. The course winds through natural bushland and incorporates terrain that challenges horse and rider combinations, creating an exhilarating experience for participants of all levels. The jumps reflect obstacles found across the countryside, from logs and ditches to water crossings and banks, offering a safe but authentic test of equestrian skill.

Wilko Painting’s Paint It Forward project has not only refreshed the look of the course, but has also reinforced the strong sense of community that Samford is known for. “This is exactly what Paint It Forward is about – local people coming together to make local places better,” said Paul. “We hope these bright new jumps will inspire riders for years to come and show what can be achieved when community and business work hand in hand.”

Bushcare At our Council-assisted bushcare working bee on Sunday 14 September, our volunteers focused on weeding riverbank planting P4 where many sun weeds were running to seed and had to be bagged for removal off site, along with any Madeira Vine (any part of which will regenerate if left in situ) and Creeping Inch Weed, which continues to be one of our biggest problems in this section. We even had to remove some fast-growing native bracken because it was shading out some young trees and shrubs. After the session, most volunteers enjoyed afternoon tea kindly supplied by Samford Progress. Our next bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 12 October from 2pm to 4pm. We hope to see you there. Bird survey On 1 October, our birders recorded 64 species and counted 323 birds during our monthly Eco-Corridor bird survey following the usual route. It was great to see evidence of breeding, with 2 juvenile Eastern Yellow Robins being watched closely by their parent along the Ecotrail and a female Superb Fairywren carrying a feather to line her nest concealed in a Hoop Pine.

Other highlights included several small groups of Topknot Pigeons flying over and hearing Lewin’s Rail by the track to the waterhole. A few summer migrants have arrived: Sacred Kingfisher, Channel-billed Cuckoo and Pacific Koel (heard). You can find more details about the survey by searching the free eBird app. Peter Storer

DAYBORO SKATE PARK UPGRADE A major upgrade is set to transform the much-loved skate park in Roderick A Cruice Park, Dayboro. Delivered by City of Moreton Bay, the upgrade will see the new design pay tribute to the area’s farming history and provide a modern space for skating, scootering and BMX riding. Features of the skate park upgrade include: • A separate mini pool-style bowl. • A flowing street style area. • Mellow banks and small quarter pipes for beginners. • Classic rails and ledges for more advanced riders. City of Moreton Bay recently awarded the tender for construction, with the project expected to be completed by late 2025, weather permitting. Access to some areas of the park may be impacted during construction, and Council will work closely with contractors to minimise disruption wherever possible.

Samford Bowls Club The competition year for the Samford District Bowls Club is drawing to a close and the Club will go into Social Play mode until competitions recommence in 2026. The finals of the men’s and women’s triples will be played over the next few weeks as well as the Mixed Pairs. These events will conclude the Club’s competition events for the year.

The final round of the D’Aguilar Cup (The Dag Cup) was played at Woodford on Thursday 18 September. This is an annual event where twelve bowlers from four respective Clubs - Samford, Dayboro, Kilcoy and Woodford - compete four rounds over several months for the honour to be crowned the Winners of the ‘Dag Cup’. Four triple sides from each club play 3 games of 10 ends against opposition clubs on the day. Lunch is provided by the host Club. The ‘Dag Cup’ was presented to Woodford Club this year. On the weekend of 20 September, Pam Campbell and Shirley Martin competed in

the 2025 Brisbane District Championships - Ladies Pairs, however were unsuccessful in reaching the finals. They were joined by Jo Ehrlich and Janice Ridley a week later to compete in the 2025 Brisbane District Championships - Ladies Fours, but unfortunately the four ladies narrowly missed the final play off of this competition and hoping for better luck next year. On Sunday 5th October the Ipswich QRI Social Bowls Club will be bringing a number of players to our club for a day of bowls and comradery. This is a social day for them and our members. There are cash prizes to be won and the day is generously sponsored by Village Electrics. Our lady members will cater on the day. Members of the local community and surrounds are invited to join in the Village Bowls social nights. This event has been running for many years now, is held twice a year and played on Thursday evenings for 8 weeks. Our second round for 2025 commenced on 2nd October. It is a great networking opportunity to meet others from in and around Samford area. Teams of 3 compete over the season for the Village Barefoot Bowls title. It is not too late to join in this fun relaxing night of social bowls. You never know - you may enjoy bowling and become the next club, state or Australian champion! OUR LOCAL HISTORY Samford Museum

Getting lost in the bush with its many dangers is a traumatic time for a anyone. This happened to a group of 60 schoolboys aged nine to eleven years and two Franciscan Fathers from Padua College in May 1968 at Upper Cedar Creek in the foothills of Mt Glorious and Mt Samson. When the boys, who were due back at 4.30pm to meet their bus waiting at the Kiosk, did not arrive, the alarm was raised. The police were alerted and set up a base camp at Williams Sawmill at the end of Cedar Creek Road, Cedar Creek, for the search party to begin searching at 8.30pm, however, the search didn’t begin until 9.30pm. Light rain was falling and the temps mild. Parents gathered to wait for news. The area being searched was thickly timbered, rocky and steeply sloping. The two search parties were made up each of one police officer, two forestry workers and two men with local knowledge. During the search, residents of the area were asked to leave their house lights on to provide a marker for the missing children

should they be in the area. One search party saw what could have been a fire in the direction of Mt Glorious. Police said it was known that one of the priests had matches and might have used them to light a signal fire. Police believed the priests would keep the party together and await a rescue during the night or wait for daylight. An Army helicopter located the group about 9am next morning and a search and rescue party reached them shortly after. Boy scouts brought out the message that the boys were all well and expected to reach Cedar Creek about midday. One suffered an asthma attack and was carried out by a rescuer. The boys told of a frightening, cold, wet night on the mountain and of being hungry. They huddled together to keep warm. A priest reported he had one match left and one of the boys had some methylated spirts for bites and cuts, so they poured that over some ferns to make a fire to alert

the helicopter. The boys were reunited with their parents early in the afternoon. Police Commissioner Mr Bischof publicly thanked everyone who took part in the rescue of the schoolboys. The Samford Sustainable Business Network has a look-alike in the form of the Redcliffe Sustainable Business Network. Both networks have been part of a program sponsored by their respective Rotary Clubs with support from the City of Moreton Bay and facilitated by Samford-based Green Street. Samford’s businesses have been profiled in the Pump previously and this issue we are telling a bit of the story of Redcliffe’s Chameleon House. C h a m e l e o n H o u s i n g p r ov i d e s accommodation and support for young people on the Redcliffe Peninsula. A registered charity, it runs a youth shelter (Chameleon House) and five houses for young families. As well as assisting with accommodation, Chameleon helps young people with education, employment and training. The team mentors young people to help them develop life skills such as budgeting, cooking, parenting and healthy living. Their mission is to “provide a safe home, care, and support for young people and young families who are homeless, and to enable them to access the services and support they require.” Manager, Nicki Kemp, is keen for the organisation to improve sustainability where possible and at one of the network’s start-up workshops they defined goals, analysed their current situation and considered how Green Street resources could help. Nicki and the team identified a few areas to focus on, including, energy use, waste and purchasing practice. They discussed concepts with young people at the shelter and started the process of making various adjustments to improve sustainability. It’s nice to know a Samford-grown program is helping out in other parts of the City of Moreton Bay. OUT & ABOUT MAKE A SPLASH Families invited to Lake Samsonvale Open Day The Lake Samsonvale Water Sport Association (LSWSA) is throwing open its gates on Friday 8 November with a community Open Day designed especially for families. The event is designed to give locals a taste of life by the water with activities like sailing, paddling and kayaking all on display. There’s even a competition to win a free family membership, giving one lucky household a year of access to the lake. Club President Tim Hunt says it’s all about creating opportunities for families to spend time together outdoors. “Creating a family friendly club is a major priority for us,” he explains. “We want people to bring their whole family to the lake to enjoy the water, and make it your own little adventure.” For children, the highlight is often the club’s free Learn-to-Sail program, where young sailors get their first taste of life on the water. “It’s amazing to see kids’ faces light up when they get on the water for the first time,” Tim said.

More than just a sporting club, LSWSA has become a hub for connection. From relaxed afternoons by the lake to the thrill of learning new skills, the Open Day is about showing families how easy it can be to join in. “Seeing families laughing and making memories together — that’s what our club is really about,” said Tim. The LSWSA Open Day is free to attend

School Holiday Adventures The school holidays were filled with fun, friendship, and plenty of adventure for our playgroup families. We kicked things off with a trip to Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, where the children were delighted to spot a curious tree kangaroo, slithery snakes, and even a sunbaking echidna—plus many more fascinating Australian animals. Afterwards, we enjoyed a well-deserved

ice cream together, the perfect treat on a warm day. Another highlight was our visit to Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eatons Hill. Families wandered along the bush paths, discovering the sights and sounds of nature, before stumbling upon a truly magical fairy garden tucked away amongst the trees. The children loved exploring this hidden wonder, and it was so good to catch up with friends while out in the fresh air. Our Babies Group also had a special visit from Allied Health Ferny Hills. Caitlin ran a Tummy Time Workshop, giving mums practical tips to help their little ones strengthen key muscles. The advice was invaluable, and we’re so grateful to Caitlin for sharing her time and knowledge with our community. Exciting Changes at Playgroup While families were out exploring, wonderful changes were happening back at playgroup. Our much-loved fort is being refurbished, and we were lucky enough to have fresh turf laid, making our play space greener and more inviting than ever. A huge thank you to GoTurf for their support and hard work in transforming our outdoor area. Don’t forget—our Community Family Fun Day is just around the corner! QCWA Samford Spring has Sprung! CWA Samford branch has many wonderful ladies who are on the committee. One of which is our Activity Officer, Gail who organised a day trip to the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba (pictured). CWA members and friends were treated to a delightful day of visiting Spring Bluff, Picnic Point, Queens Park and Laurel Bank Gardens, as well as viewing 4 prize-winning gardens around Toowoomba. Gail complied a goodies bag for each lady to enjoy while on the bus, drinks and snacks added to the fun of travelling. Thankyou Gail for an engaging and fun day out. Whilst visiting Toowoomba on the first day of the Carnival, my friend and I dropped by the Toowoomba CWA for a Devonshire morning tea. The tea was hot, and the famous scones were delicious with homemade Strawberry Jam topped with rich thick cream. We enjoyed our visit to the CWA Hall, filled with creative craft and mouthwatering baking. We were welcomed with open arms by the CWA members; there is an instant connection and friendship as soon as you meet each other. We are all part of a community of women who are helping to improve the lives of Queensland families in regional, rural and remote areas, as well as our neighbouring South Pacific Islands. The Craft and Quilt Show is on 15th to 18th October at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. QCWA will have a feature stall and will be running craft classes. CLOSEBURN GARDEN CENTRE Spring in Samford has thrown us a bit of a curveball this year. We were all hoping for some much-needed rain, but with temperatures rising, conditions are becoming uncomfortably dry. While it’s tempting to retreat indoors to escape the heat, your garden still needs care to navigate these tricky early-spring conditions and prepare for the season ahead. This time of year is known for rapid growth and vibrant blooms. To make the most of it, fertilising is key. A slow-release fertiliser with a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is a reliable choice for most plants. However, it’s always worth checking online—or with us at the nursery—if your specific species requires a

specialised formula. If your plants show signs of nutrient deficiency like leaf discolouration or stunted growth, a liquid fertiliser targeted to those symptoms is your best bet. Liquid options act quickly and are absorbed immediately, helping your plants bounce back faster. If your soil is acting depleted, adding organic compost will revitalise it by feeding the beneficial microbes that live underground. These microbes break down organic matter and release by-products that condition the soil and nourish your plants. Top it all off with a generous layer of mulch, and your garden will be set up for a successful growing season. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES PILATES LIFESTYLE AND WELLBEING Pilates classes require commitment, concentration, breath work, control of tension and release and a bucket load of determination. If the Pilates session is missing any one of these elements, you are not being delivered a true experience of a well delivered Pilates session. It is up to the instructor to deliver a program that innately brings every client into utilising all the above mentioned principals to the best of the individual client on that day. When this is not achieved by the Instructor or desired by the client, Pilates exercises or sessions fall way short of what is meant to be experienced and achieved. When people tap into a deep understanding and concentration of the What, How and Why Pilates exercise are applied, there is a freeing of all movement through strength, flexibility and control and a mental shift bringing about a sense of mental wellbeing. Thursday 20 November Seven of Ska For out last show of the year Samford Live is proud to present The Seven of Ska - a polished ska and reggae group – and local success story. Take one Steiner graduate as frontman, two Highvale members and two teaching music locally, put them together with a stage full of good vibes and you have a recipe for a top night out. Other local band members include Highvale locals Brendan Hook on Tenor Saxophone and Dave Rule on bass, joined by fellow local resident trombonist Tim Lefever. Started in 2019 as an instrumental band, Seven of Ska have developed a large repertoire of originals and arrangements of hand-picked covers. Frontman and Samford Steiner graduate Emile Regano explains the band’s sound: “This music had a whole different kind of rhythm and pulse”. He notes, “you can pour all sorts of other influences into it.” They have recently recorded brand new original material at Camp Mountain’s respected Airlock Studios – watch out for the new release. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES DEEP DIVE Trail artist Lesley Gibbons Paints Joy in Every Brushstroke Stepping into Lesley Gibbons’s creative world is like entering a garden sung in colour. Based in Samford, Gibbons has traded her primaryschool classroom for a studio awash in vibrant paints and playful ideas—and thank goodness she did. Her work reminds us how powerful it is when joy, nature, and story combine on canvas. Birds, Botanicals, Happiness Birds and botanicals dominate her oeuvre—bold, larger-than-life characters that seem to wink at us from the edges of petals or dip in among vines. There’s quirk, there’s energy, and always there’s colour. One painting features a magpie prancing among a riot of flowers, the contrast between crisp whites and rich hues making the bird leap out, alive. Each work carries storytelling elements— little character moments that invite you to pause, look again, and imagine what it might mean: where the bird is going, what its garden smells like, why that leaf sweeps

across the sky. They’re moments of delight, surprises hidden in flora, colour and form. Art That Smiles at You What strikes you most is how open and warm her paintings are. EVENTS & ACTIVITIES DAYBORO ART GALLERY The Dayboro Art Gallery is delighted to Showcase Mac Vines Retrospective at our Annual Open Night on Friday, 24th October 2025 from 4pm until 8pm. Mac’s work will be on show until Sunday 26th October. We thank his wife Helen for helping us bring this event into fruition. Mac Vines moved into Lacey’s Creek with his family in the early 1990s and lived here until his passing in 2009. Born on the famous island of Mull of Kintyre, Scotland in 1942, Mac came to Australia with his mum to meet up with his father in Singleton NSW. After high school, Mac headed up to Rabaul, PNG where he was trained as an E Course teacher. Over the coming years Mac and his wife Helen welcomed two children and lived and taught in PNG for over 11 adventurous years. Mac’s reputation as a cartoonist led him to begin his artistic career by illustrating schoolbooks for the PNG government. When Independence came, he and his family moved back to Brisbane. Mac had the cartooning bug, so after finishing his educational studies, he walked into The Telegraph newspaper’s office with a portfolio of his work and they offered him a job as their new cartoonist!

This was great timing, as the Bjelke-Petersen era was coming to the fore. His daily job was lampooning the government which appealed to his sense of humour. He also drew the popular ‘On the Selection’, the weekly cartoon strip. He loved his work as a newspaper cartoonist particularly at The Telegraph. Mac made friends with Alan Moir from The Courier-Mail, and they worked on a publication called “Joh’s Family Album” and published a book on Flo Bjelke-Petersen. Following the closure of The Telegraph, Mac worked for The Sunday Mail and continued to illustrate various books and educational pamphlets. Mac joined the Dayboro Art Gallery in its early days. He was also a keen painter and the Gallery is pleased to show a limited selection of his cartoons and paintings at

our Open Night. At the open Night, come and enjoy Will Outridge’s story-telling and amazing acoustic guitar. Bookstore News When The God of Small Things was released in 1997 it was hailed as literary sensation, and it went on to win the Booker Prize that year. The debut novel from Indian architect, activist and writer Arundhati Roy has been translated into over 40 languages and found a place in the hearts of millions of readers. Her second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness follows the lives of a diverse cast of characters who follow Anjum, a Hijra or transgender character, to the guesthouse she has created in a graveyard. The book is a damning comment on the post-colonial fallout of Partition in 1947. Roy has also written several screen plays and essays and has received awards for her work as a

political and environmental activist. Not that she cares for awards. Her long-awaited memoir, Mother Mary Comes To Me, which landed on our bookshelves last month, richly depicts the world she grew up in, and how her difficult, yet brilliant mother – her ‘shelter’ and her ‘storm’ – shaped her into the person she is today. Tasmanian storyteller, Heather Rose, brings us to Baffies Oan Book of the Month – A Great Act of Love. The main character, Caroline, arrives in Van Dieman’s land seeking re-invention and respectability. Leasing an old cottage next to a neglected vineyard, she sets out to reclaim her life. Inspired by true events, A Great Act of Love is a painfully beautiful saga of a flawed father and daughter, and the enduring power of familial love, and, also, champagne. SMALL LEAVED TAMARIND Of the 21,000 plants native to Australia that have been identified, there is detailed information about some species but only very generalised observations about others. The Small Leaved Tamarind (Diploglotttis campbelii) fits into the latter category. A small tree growing to 7 to 10 metres in cultivation, the Small Leaved Tamarind is an attractive tree with a dense crown. It has a fluted trunk with greyish-brown bark that has vertical cracks. The lush green pinnate leaves have 4 – 8 leaflets. Between November and January small cream-brown flowers are borne on multibranched panicles. Each flower produces a 6mm, yellow-brown capsule of 1 – 3 lobes that houses spectacular, bright red flesh enclosing a single seed per lobe. It has been estimated that a single tree can produce many kilos of fruit in a harvest. The edible flesh has a distinctive, tart flavour suitable in both sweet and savory applications such as jams, jellies, sauces

and drinks. It is a great accompaniment for cheeses and cold meat. The Small Leaved Tamarind is an endangered species. Naturally occurring in riverine rainforest from the Richmond River in northern NSW, the Currumbin and Tallebudgera Valleys in southern Qld to Mudgeeraba Creek in the Gold Coast hinterland, less than 150 trees have been reported in the wild. These recordings have been restricted to a small number of sites with a maximum of three trees per site. The preferred habitat is well watered

Much of the land throughout this range has been cleared for agricultural and urban development, leaving small, isolated rainforest remnants or individual trees on cleared land. Given that this species is such a prolific fruiter - fruit is dispersed by flying foxes and the seeds germinate readily in nursery conditions - it seems amazing that the number of individuals in the wild is so low. That each tree does not fruit every year, that there is a short time of seed viability and that the survival of the slow growing juvenile plants could be limited by grazing and trampling by stock, could be part of the reason. The adult trees might also release allelopathic chemicals into the soil that inhibit germination or supress seedling growth to reduce competition for resources. Regardless of the cause, the genetic diversity of the species is reduced. Fortunately, this is an attractive tree for home and parkland plantings and in recent years has been cultivated for its bush food value. The plant has proved adaptable in cultivation growing in loamy, sandy loam and clay loam soils. It prefers, however, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and part shade. This is a suitable tree for all but small gardens. It is a striking ornamental feature plant; a good addition to an edible garden and, with its beautiful green canopy, can provide privacy as a screening plant. It may be kept in a pot with regular pruning and care. The Small Leaved Tamarind fruits 4 – 5 years from germination. The fruit is eaten by a variety of birds, particularly rainforest species. It is a host plant for the Bright Vornelian and Pale Green Triangle butterflies and Swift Ghost Moth. Both the flowers and fruit attract bees and insects. The Pretender is a highly fictionalised version of the youth and young adulthood of the mysterious Lambert Simnel, who was claimed to really be Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick, and a challenger to the throne of the newly crowned Henry VII. He was captured and pardoned by Henry, becoming a spit-boy in the royal kitchens and later a falconer. But most of his life is veiled in obscurity. There are some historical inaccuracies but this historical tragi-comedy is a fascinating well-crafted coming-of-age read, filled with beauty and a confronting starkness that reflect the era. As John/Simnel/Edward overcomes or ignores the moral quandaries he faces on his journey to understanding himself, the themes of identity, love, honour and revenge are explored. The language usage is a joy. For lovers of historical fiction, this is a rib-tickling, gut-wrenching must read.

PINE RIVERS UPDATE Thank You to all our Fireﬁghters 10th October marks Firefighters’ Remembrance Day where we honour the 60 firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty and pay respect to the ongoing risk and challenges faced by firefighters across the state in their efforts to protect life and property. 16th September was Yellow Ribbon Day. It was great to celebrate the day with the Samford Rural Fire Brigade in the Queensland Parliament and to thank them for their hard work and dedication to protecting Queensland communities. With bushfire season already here, it is important we all do our part to be prepared in the event of a fire. Here are a couple of things you can do to be prepared this

The last month of finals seasons for both NRL and AFL has been electric and really boosted state pride. At the same time the stellar performances have highlighted why grassroots sport participation for kids is so essential, being healthy, active and social is great for childhood growth and development. Sadly, the round one of the Play On! Sports vouchers are now exhausted. Some clubs are still facing difficulties with reregistering following the transfer from Fair Play to Play On. Be sure to talk with your club or program of choice about their application if they are still not listed as a provider. The second round of vouchers will become available in January 2026. DICKSON UPDATE A Message from Ali France MP It’s been four busy months since I was elected as your Federal MP, and I’ve been out and about listening, learning and connecting with locals in our beautiful Samford area. Whether it’s chatting over coffee at The Long Yard Larder, visiting the vibrant school community at the Sunset Harvest at Samford Steiner School, or mooching through the Creative Samford Arts Trail, I always feel uplifted by the spirit and strength of this part of our Dickson community. The Samford Show was another highlight – what a weekend! Congratulations to the committee and all the volunteers who made it such a success. The best thing about the show is getting to spend time listening and understanding what is important to you – so I can best represent you. I also had the pleasure of visiting Samford Riding for the Disabled at the show, who I used to be a regular participant with. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love this job. I’ve also spent time with some of Samford’s community groups. The Samford Area Men’s Shed is a brilliant example of mateship and mental wellbeing in action. Several local organisations have been successful in grants for volunteering as well as the promised upgrade to the Samford Rangers Change Shed. I’ve also been working hard in Parliament, speaking up on NDIS reform and voting for cheaper medicines on the PBS (capping scripts at $25), protecting penalty rates and cutting HECS debts by 20%. Labor is delivering on our promises from strengthening Medicare to rolling out our Women’s Health Package, with hundreds of thousands of women already accessing cheaper treatments. In Dickson, the Strathpine walk-in Medicare Mental Health hub is open, with another planned for Everton Hills. More than 1,200 first home buyers have accessed Labor’s 5% deposit scheme, while 370 households have joined thousands of Aussies benefiting from our Cheaper Home
