From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors mclabarb@aol.com

A Lot to Be Thankful For by Mike LaBarbera November ushers in the renovation of our aging Activity Center. By this time next year we will be enjoying the new auditorium, expanded entry, Kiva meeting room and patio. Many unseen improvements and upgrades include the sound dampening walls in the Native American rooms, audio/visual systems in the auditorium and the heating and A/C. These welcome upgrades and new interior décor will vastly enhance the beauty of our community property. I want to welcome back seasonal residents who share our moderate climate, where, as we age, colder weather becomes a factor in choosing where to live and play during the winter months. SCOV is that perfect place to enjoy friendships, many clubs and amenities, plus the joy of being welcomed back to your “other” home. November hosts two federal holidays, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. As many of you may be aware, Veterans Day has special meaning to me. Veterans who served our great country deserve a special thanks from all of us that reap the daily freedoms we enjoy because of their sacrifices. Our freedoms were and are upheld by past and current members of the Armed Forces, who signed that blank check when they joined or were drafted into the military, for the amount up to and including their life, to defend our country. After the recent end to America’s longest war in Afghanistan, I pray all our military personnel are safe around the world. On Thanksgiving, we give thanks for so many of our cherished blessings: relationships, family and friends, within and outside SCOV. We have the ability to live and enjoy our excellent quality of life in SCOV during our senior years. We can decide to kick back and enjoy our safe, friendly and wonderful community, or actively participate in the many amenities SCOV has to offer. There are numerous ways to volunteer within SCOV. Help one of your favorite clubs by assuming a leadership position. Clubs usually change officers in January. Talk to someone about the twenty-three SCOV committees and see if they need new members. General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080

Common Goals Isn’t it interesting that community associations are the preferred place for many to call home? There are many reasons this is the case. Our community here at Sun City Oro Valley (SCOV) offers many amenities, and with all the clubs and activities, there is a common comradery value for many residents. Let’s not forget the property values: SCOV properties have increased in value significantly over the years. The SCOV Board of Directors has changed many times in the past, but the goal of doing what is best for the most at the best price while achieving harmony in the community, has been and currently is a constant. This goal can be best accomplished when a reasonable balance between an individual’s wants and the best interests of the community find an equilibrium point. In the Owner & Resident Handbook under COMMUNITY STANDARDS, there are sections called Code of Conduct and Rights and Responsibilities for Better Communities. The Code of Conduct is short, simple and logical. It points out responsibilities of members and their guests when using common areas as well as digital and written interactions. It also lists actions not permitted against any other member, guest or staff. The Rights and Responsibilities for Better Communities states rights of homeowners as well as their responsibilities; it does the same for community leaders. I would encourage our residents to review these important documents. Let’s all try to reach that reasonable balance to achieve our goals and continue to strive to be better this year than last. And better next year than this year. As we get better individually, our community will inevitably find the same level collectively. As they say, a rising tide lifts all ships. Here’s to rising with the tide.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070

Administrative Customer Service Our General Manager continually challenges us to keep customer service in the forefront of our training, discussion and work practices. The Administrative department meets weekly, and in most of those meetings, there is training on customer service. We are intentional about making sure that when you leave our office or hang up the phone with us, you know your concern has been listened to and addressed in a respectful, caring manner. The Administrative department’s mission statement is: “Valuing people as we facilitate a positive, healthy, active lifestyle!” You are our priority. Staff wants to help you enjoy this healthy, active lifestyle offered in SCOV. The statement surrounds the doorframe as you walk into the Administrative lobby. It’s a reminder to us and a promise to you.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Giving Thanks It seems sad that many only feel the need to give thanks at Thanksgiving. Many of you may remember the article that I wrote about eight years ago. I had on my badge that stated I work at SCOV when I ran an errand. The clerk saw my badge and she stated, “You are so lucky to be able live in SCOV. I hope my husband and I can afford to live there some day.” Her comment humbled me. SCOV has so much to offer that we sometimes forget all the good that we do have. I will be spending Thanksgiving with my family in the Chicagoland area. May your Thanksgiving be spent with those you love or care about.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Welcome Back Seasonal Residents Many returning residents will be planning new projects in the coming months. Please remember, if you are thinking of changes to the exterior of your home, you will probably need some kind of submittal approval. Since Covid, we have been accepting these submittals digitally through our website rather than in person at the Welcome Center. If this seems daunting, we are happy to help you through the process. Go to www.suncityorovalley.com and sign into the website. If you have not already registered, you must do that first. Click on Members > Member Services > For Your Home. Click on either Start House Paint Submittal or Start Submittal for Everything Else. Fill out the needed information and you are halfway there. Once we receive your request, you will receive communications on any submittal from scoroval@ciramail. Please add that email address to your contacts so that those notices do not go to your junk mail. For a submittal on any project besides painting your house, we will send you a plot plan and the correct submittal form. Follow the directions including attaching support information such as sketches, pictures of materials, etc. If you are not able to scan information to attach, take pictures of documents with your cell phone and attach them that way. If you have difficulty, please contact Katy Mosier 520-917-8058.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Beginner’s Guide to Exercise A beginner’s exercise program should incorporate aerobic activity with some muscle strengthening exercises. In general, I recommend aiming for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. This can be split into small increments, even if it’s just a few minutes at a time. So where do you start? You can start by simply taking a walk, going for a bike ride, swimming a lap in the pool or hopping on the elliptical. Everyone should walk the dog twice a day, whether they have one or not. For muscle strengthening, you could start with light hand weights or body weight exercises such as push-ups, situps, squats, lunges and planks. Something is better than nothing, so start slow and low and aim to gradually work up to your goals. Before you reap the benefits of exercise and its positive effects on your attitude, you must first change your outlook on the importance of exercise. With physical activity being proven to improve your mental and emotional state as well as your physical well-being, there is no reason not to exercise. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to get started–just get moving! Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis hours of operation are on page 2. Tuesday, November 9, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, November 10, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

Important reminder: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on your designated trash day. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup. SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues rather than telephone in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the REPORT A PROBLEM tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, November 13, Artisan Center Courtyard

At the next meeting of the Active Health Committee, we will brainstorm and explore new programming for the winter season. During the next five months, we will bring current health-related presentations to our community to promote an active and healthy lifestyle with a focus on what you can do yourself to promote your wellness. If you have heard a great speaker, or have suggestions on a topic that you would like to hear, please contact Rita Menet. New members or participants are welcome at our meetings.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) continues to remain extremely busy with a minimum of 15 submittals to review at each of our twice-a-month Zoom meetings. Residents who submit complete applications gain speedy review and approval of their project. One way to ensure a complete application and a project that meets the Development Standards for a Permanent Improvement is to have a pre-submittal meeting with ARC representatives. Before you begin preparing your application on the SCOV website, take the time to read all the directions, especially the specific items that must be included with your submittal. Use the drop-down menus: Members > Members Services > For Your Home > Start Here. The ARC members devote many hours year-round reviewing projects and then discussing them in Zoom meetings held every second and fourth Tuesday at 2 PM. We encourage anyone who is planning a project or just interested, to join us online. The link to our meetings can be found on: Members > Committees > Architectural Review > Read More > Join ARC’s Zoom Meeting.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. Vaccinated ACRTF members may attend in person; non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom. The SCOV website (go to Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the Charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV.” An informal working group comprised of representatives from each of the artisan clubs met over the winter of 2021 to research and write this discussion paper. The ACRTF is now building on the previous work and will identify and work with an architect to develop a comprehensive recommendation for the renovation of this 34-year-old Artisan Center facility.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Keep in mind, we don’t pay anything for the paper phone books, and we have no control over the publisher or the printer. The publisher received our files in early September. As I write this, we still don’t have a delivery date. “This Week in SCOV” email will have any updates when I get them. In the meantime, I can’t wait until you see Paul Livingston’s terrific cover photograph. As always, choosing the cover is extremely difficult from the many photos that are submitted for consideration. The online directory is updated monthly, thus always has the most current information. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List. The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista during business hours (during Activity Center renovation). Be sure to check out the work of Cathy Winje, left, and Trisha Bergen our own resident artists. Featured artists in the shop this month are Trisha Bergen and Cathy Winje. Trisha majored in art in college and traveled the world. She lived in Taos, New Mexico, before moving to SCOV and is absorbed in glass fusing. “Brightly colored dichroic glass is fantastic and a joy. Every bit of glass is hand-cut and handshaped. I layer and fire the glass in my kiln, working with it several times until I see what I love.” Cathy’s plates are a creation out of boredom on a cold Chicago winter day, scrap material from sewing pillow cases, glass plates and Mod Podge. She was hooked on making these decorative plates from the start. “I put treats on them, wrapped them in plastic and gave them as hostess gifts. These plates need to be handwashed.”

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz 603-459-4219 nashuachristmas@comcast.net www.SCOVLites.com

The Holiday Lights Committee has once again been busy all year gearing up for this season’s expanded light exhibit. Thanks to the Foundation, HOA and private donors for helping make this year’s display an even more robust show than ever before. However, the project does have costs; we are relying on donations and volunteer hours to coordinate the project and to make the decorations. This year there is an exciting fundraiser offering residents a chance to enhance their holiday spirits by visiting the homes of seven of SCOV’s most generous inhabitants. Each homeowner welcomes visitors inside their beautifully decorated homes showing off their creativity and inspiration for your own home. Homes will be open on Saturday, December 4. Masks are required for the tour. Call Linda Bretz with questions 603459-4219, and be sure to check our new website for further details at www.SCOVLites.com.

Ticket sales, Fri., Nov. 12, 9-11 AM and Fri., Nov. 19, 1-3 PM, Catalina Vista, $25 pp Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/

Our community is getting busier with the return of many residents, so it is time to reserve tables and chairs for get togethers or extra beds for guests. The Loan Room has many items, but with fall and winter holidays coming, it is good to make reservations up to two months in advance of your needs to be sure you get what you would like to use. We also have many medical items available for slightly longer loan times than equipment for guests. Our children’s items are more limited in quantity, so we recommend reservations for toys, car seats, high chairs and Pack ‘n Plays during the holidays. The website is available for reservations but they can also be made at the Loan Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Please come and see what we have for SCOV residents.

Long Range Planning Chair Sharon Kennedy kennesk@comcast.net Second and Fourth Wed., 10 AM, on Zoom

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5-to-10 year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Committee documents, past agendas, minutes and our Request Project Consideration form are available on the SCOV website. Our meetings are open to all residents.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Sincere Thanks Neighborhood Pride issues sincere thanks to all homeowners who: • keep trees trimmed so stop signs are visible • keep trees trimmed up high off sidewalks • keep plants trimmed back off sidewalks • keep their yards weed-free, neat and tidy • make sure all lights are burning in house number plates

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, November 2021

Not often enough do we say thank you to the people around us. Perhaps, as homeowners, we should say an occasional thank you to our neighbor who borders our personal property. If, when he has his own yard cleaned up by a landscaper, he includes part of yours, which may have a problem caused by his foliage, it just might deserve a thank you. Thanksgiving is a good time for our committee to sincerely thank all homeowners who take pride in their own personal property and work diligently to keep our entire community a beautiful place in which to live.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

November is the month we gather at Thanksgiving and express how thankful we are. We are all thankful for our family, friends and good health. I’m also thankful for our wonderful SCOV volunteers who keep our community going through the many volunteer hours they donate. The Posse is another group of amazing volunteers who help keep our community safe. I realize we have been unable to provide services during the Covid pandemic; however, I know we still have a group of dedicated volunteers willing to donate their time once we resume patrols. The silent volunteers who watch out for their neighbors are another group I’m thankful for. I hope you all celebrate Thanksgiving with the ones you love. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 and via Zoom

The solar energy systems installed five years ago at various SCOV buildings continue to produce electricity and reduce the Association’s utility costs and reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The project, valued at $1.2M in 2016, was developed and installed with no cost to SCOV. The Association has an opportunity this year to purchase the systems from the current owners. The Board-appointed Solar System Purchase Task Force conducted an exhaustive study within the past year and found that purchase of the solar systems was financially beneficial to SCOV. The lower costs for electricity resulting from SCOV’s ownership, will repay the purchase price of $664,413 in approximately six years. Upon review of the study, the Board approved the purchase of the systems effective November 1, 2021. The Properties Committee unanimously supports the purchase of the solar systems. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Our annual Welcome Back Fiesta Club Fitting Day party with our famous barbeque is on Friday, November 5, from 10 AM-2:30 PM at the driving range. It includes golf equipment from Srixon, Cleveland, XXIO, Titleist and more, along with footwear and other vendors. All will be available at special discounted pricing. Our men’s and women’s golf clubs are in full swing now. For information about any of the clubs, go to www.theviewsgolfclub.com and click on Join, then Leagues, to get further information. The annual Pro-Member Invitational is Monday, November 15. We invite one professional and an amateur from another golf club to join two of our members or residents. For more information and registration, check with the Pro Shop. As a reminder, our golf cart policy is two golf carts per group. Any additional carts in the group will need to remain on the cart path. Only two carts will be allowed in the fairway or rough at a time. Please follow cart signs and keep all four tires on the path around the tees and greens. If you have any questions, contact the Pro Shop or read the monthly “Tee to Green” newsletter. Visit the Pro Shop or our website for more information about participating in our fun club activities like Chip & Putt on Thursday afternoons. Also, don’t forget every Friday and Saturday, starting in November, we have the Barbeque Grille at the turn between the hole #9 green and the hole #10 tee from 10 AM-2:30 PM.

Golf Advisory Chair Eileen Buskirk 206-450-6146 SCOVgolfadvisory@gmail.com Sep.-May, first Wed., 2 PM, WC3

League play is back, and we’re starting to see the impact of not overseeding the golf course. One of the benefits promised was better fall play with no time off and no cart path restrictions. As promised, fall play was fabulous. One of the disadvantages discussed is the wearing out of the dormant grass. Mike Kropf will be evaluating this continuously during the winter months. To protect the fairways, he will implement ways to direct cart traffic. There will be signs showing where to enter and exit and painted lines meaning, “No carts beyond.” There will be stakes and ropes. Some days there may be “Carts on Path this Hole” signs. It is critical all golfers follow the directions. Player’s assistants will enforce these restrictions. Surveys will be available for every golfer following every round for input regarding the impact of not overseeding on their golf experience. These will be compiled every two weeks to evaluate the changes in playability and customer satisfaction. Positive attitudes during this time are appreciated.

Did you know: • 80% of all golfers will never achieve a handicap of less than 18. • The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million. • The driver swing speed of an average male golfer is 84 mph, 148-152 for a national long-drive champion. • 18-Hole Men’s Golf is a great way to start each Wednesday. November 3 - President’s Cup or Individual Low Net November 6 - President’s Cup Round 2 November 10 - President’s Cup Round 3 or Stableford November 17 - Turkey Shootout November 24 - Two-Man Better Ball

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

Since the fairways were not overseeded this year, the Golf Course Maintenance Department will be very busy working on several projects throughout the winter months. Not mowing, fertilizing or watering the overseeded grass will free up time to concentrate on items that often get neglected on the priority list. The first item will be some extensive bunker maintenance. The rocks and debris that have contaminated the bunker sand over the years will be cleaned up as well as possible. Then new bunker sand will be added to make the bunkers softer with easier playability. The new sand will be the same sand that was used in the new bunkers built during the greens renovation last summer. Another project will be thinning desert areas around tee complexes. Over the years, the trees and cactus have reduced the visibility of the fairways from several holes on the back nine. On hole #13, the cholla cactus has grown to the point the left tee box can’t even see the fairway anymore. The trees on the left of holes #15 and #18 have created issues with blocking the sun from the tee boxes to forcing the tee markers to be placed farther right to see the fairways. Wet areas around green complexes will be addressed this winter as well. The new greens require irrigation even when dormant. This irrigation is creating wet areas around the col-

The Men’s 9-Hole League began the 2021-2022 season on October 7, an earlier than usual start. This was possible because The Views did not close for overseeding this year. There will not be the usual cart path-only restriction for the two weeks after reseeding, so play will be great. The addition of the new Views app for mobile phones is a great resource with GPS distance and scoring, making for better and more accurate play. Who knows, this new app may make everyone a much better golfer. Buddy Day and the first league meeting are fast approaching, with the only issue being our ability to find a place to meet. We are working that issue hard and will get it solved as well as confirming the date. Come join us.

The start of our season has arrived with our first golf format being a Four-Person Scramble Tuesday, November 2. We are pleased to have Pat Stark as the handicap chair for our club. The great thing about using a handicap is it allows golfers of varying abilities to compete against each other in a fair match. This system was adopted by the USGA in 1912. Pat is here to answer any questions and assist, if needed, as it pertains to your handicap. If you Pat Stark accidently post an incorrect score, which happens from time to time, please contact Pat pat@up.net. She can make the necessary corrections. Pat splits her time between Oro Valley and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. League registration is now open at www.theviewsgolfclub. com. Kuddles for Kids From November 1 to December 1, Seniors for Kids invites all SCOV residents to unite and donate new stuffed animals (no larger than 18 inches tall). These Kuddles will be given to agencies who serve fearful children across Southern Arizona so they can feel the hugs that all of SCOV wishes them in their time of need. In 2019, we gathered and distributed over 400 Kuddles to police, fire crews, hospitals, Toys for Tots, AVIVA (foster care), Emerge! (domestic abuse), Tu Nidito (no child grieves alone) and more. Last year, the pandemic had its way and kept us from collecting. If it is your wish to donate, there will be a large bin located by the doors of the AFC and smaller collection boxes in other buildings. May you be blessed this year. Tucson Museum of Art (TMA) Talks Due to the remodeling of the Activity Center, the TMA Art Talks, usually held on the second Tuesday, October through April, have been postponed until the center is completed and we can resume meeting in a regularly designated SCOV venue. Although Zoom meetings were substituted in 20202021, participation was low. This popular SCOV activity is more successful with audience participation, and we regret this postponement. Photo by Tom Prall The photo above takes us back down to scale model size with a local switch engine in the striking green and yellow colors of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. It’s pulling a string of grain-filled covered hopper cars from the local storage elevator at the new town of Farmington on our model railroad. You can see the neighboring farm fields in the distance, a sight familiar to all who’ve travelled across middle America. Bob Underland built the elevator and Dave Scoles the adjacent warehouse.

SFK is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization

Our first fall business meeting was October 7. We look forward to a successful year of giving and sharing during the holiday season. We planned a year that will make up for the 2020 pandemic. Though Seniors for Kids makes a bunch of toys, they are not only a group of creators. Tom and Laura Held routinely make trips to the Tri-Community Food Bank with deliveries of food, hygiene items, household goods and donations of basic needs. We have given monetary donations to Tu Nidito to support their volunteer programs of grief counselling. We sponsor the Kuddles for Kids project (watch for more information to come) that unites all of SCOV in collecting stuffed animals for AVIVA, Three Points, Mammoth and other places where children need a warm hand to hold. Maybe you would like to join us at our next business meeting. Don’t miss the Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Saturday, November 13, Artisan Center Courtyard

Sun City Vistoso Foundation will be soliciting donations soon from the residents of our community. A couple years ago, Casa Amigas received money from the foundation to continue our mission of serving children at risk. Without that support, Casa Amigas would not be able to continue making pajama sets, newborn sleep sacks, crib sheets, quilts, blankets, capri pant sets and more. We want to thank the Sun City Vistoso Foundation for their generous contribution to our sewing group. Everything we sew, serge, embroider, quilt, knit and crochet goes to several community organizations where the need is great and never ending. Please consider donating to the foundation knowing your money goes to great causes.

We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has really stopped us this year. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with excitement. We are back to our normal schedule to put all our love in the little bears we create and children love. Please come join us so no one is alone. We have listening ears and lots of love to share with more than just the bears. Smiles to everyone. If, in your sorting and cleaning out, you find you have some polyester fiberfill, we need it to plump up the tummies of the bears. Donations are always accepted. Machine Embroidery

Some fabrics are wild, but I say the dogs won’t know the difference. If you have some larger pieces of fabric to make the actual pillow cases, please contact me.

Locker hooking tool and stitch vs. traditional hooking This picture shows locker hooking on the left and traditional hooking on the right. Each form of hooking uses different tools and materials. However, they are similar in certain ways. Both tools have a crochet hook at the end; however, the locker hook tool includes an eye for the cord to be pulled through the loops. Both techniques use a backer material with holes for the loops to be pulled. Locker hooking uses latch or locker hooking canvas which has approximately ¼ inch holes whereas traditional hooking uses rug warp with much smaller holes. Both techniques use various materials for the loops such as roving, wools strips or yarn to just name a few.

You may recognize her as a very active member of the Clay Studio and the Art League, where she is treasurer of both clubs and handles correspondence and some of the website for Clay. At home, Julie-Anne weaves on several looms, knits, crochets and weaves tapestry. Somehow, she finds the time to join us Friday mornings and share her love of spinning. When we look up from our work, we find her smiling at us as she magically spins raw material into silken thread. Julie-Anne can also be found playing roadie for husband Patrick, drummer for Total Recall, a group you may have heard playing in SCOV gatherings. Stop in to watch Julie-Anne and the other members of our group. We would love to inspire you to join us.

Monthly meetings the first Mon. of each month, 3:30 PM, Artisan Center/Silversmith Shop. New member trainings and member workshops will be posted. This month’s featured artist is Bill Reimbold. He made each of these unique bracelet cuffs during the Covid break. He used the silver overlay method, design stamping and shaped them on a trailer hitch ball. One has a rectangle of sugilite he cut and bezel set. He oxidized the silver to give each an antique look, then polished them to a semi-gloss finish to also provide a sense of antiquity. Nice! More unique pieces from regular club members can be found in our display windows in the Artisan Center courtyard. Members, look for emails about updates and changes now that the shop is open on a more regular basis. As always, we need your participation in shop operations.

Many members of our woodworkers club are just beginning to work with wood. Others have many years of shop experience. Today’s featured woodworker is one of the latter. Richard Esteb comes from the Bay Area. He moved into SCOV this past May and immediately became a Wood Shop monitor. He ran a cabinet shop business for two decades before becoming a licensed architect 20 years ago. Although he still loves working with wood, he has spent the past two decades designing residential remodels as Easthope Design, continuing to this day. A new member orientation is held at the Wood Shop the first Wednesday of each month at 4 PM. Call Bill Norton for further instructions. Club dues are $20 annually. In these contentious times, we want to speak to the issues and also speak with those with whom we may disagree. We’re still trying to find common ground in our democracy. In Arizona, our SCOV Democratic Club members Richard Kopp and citizens have the David Smith fortunate opportunity to communicate with our legislators through their system called “Request to Speak.” At our November meeting, Civic Engagement Beyond Voting will provide us with an orientation and instructions to utilize this system to speak to the issues during the Legislature’s next session in 2022. We hope many of you will want to get ready. Also this month, we will send a questionnaire to our club members to learn how we can all make our Zoom meetings even better. Except for our in-person social gathering in January next year, we will continue to meet on Zoom.

Even when we are not meeting, we want to keep you upto-date. Check out our website which is full of healthy wellness tips, websites, resources, local practitioners and more.

Fine-tuning a poem often involves the excision of unnecessary words or the reduction of the poem to its essential essence but, long or short, words are carefully selected. Club member Harvey Gardner has a special talent for long, biographical, mostly humorous story poems, but the following exhibit his additional mastery of brevity: “Butterfly I see you Monarch lick your power / from the sweet mouth of a flower / staggering around the sky, like a drunk the way you fly, / rushing in a zig-zag way, never see the need to stay, / living out your carefree life without a job, a home, a wife. Prayer Make of my tongue a cello bow and of each tooth a string and may my lips an oboe be and breath a violin. As music then my speech will flow, of poetry I’ll sing.” Newcomers are always welcome to join us, either Zooming or in person.

Exercise Aqua Tone Irmel Wheeler 520-334-0957 irmel5596@gmail.com Marcia Polley 520-818-9073 Tue., Thu., Sat., 9 AM, AFC/Pool

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band (you’ll need to bring your own). A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Melanie Livingston meljean178@yahoo.com Mon., Wed., Fri. 1 PM Oct.-Apr.; 10:10 AM May-Sep.; AFC/Pool

Now that the temperatures are cooling, we will not be meeting as often. But, if it is 77 degrees or just sunny and warm, come to the pool for the regular workout. Since exercise is crucial for people with arthritis, it is important to keep moving. There are many options here at SCOV, so don’t be a couch potato.

Energetic Exercise Donna Clark 970-946-1048 Mon. and Wed. 8-9 AM, AFC Studio Fri., Nov. 5, and 19, 7:45-8:45 AM, Catalina Vista

Let’s give thanks for all the opportunities we enjoy here in SCOV to stay fit and enjoy life. Come to our classes for a vigorous and beneficial aerobic and strength workout. Professional instructor Sally Martinez provides a variety of sessions to keep your muscles strong, joints well supported, body flexible and balance secure. Sally encourages us each to work out at our own pace: “Listen to your body!” During remodeling of the Activity Center, we meet at two different locations: Monday and Wednesday at the AFC Studio and Fridays as available, at Catalina Vista. The EE calendar and SignUpGenius both provide information on the locations and times for each class. New members are warmly welcomed – men and women – as long as there is room. We are currently limited to 34 participants in these locations. Annual dues are $3. Punch card for 12 classes is $30.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

The SCOV Pilates Club offers group mat classes at the AFC on Mondays, 3-4 PM, and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 PM. Each class participant is striving to increase their core strength. Core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help you stabilize your pelvis and spine. The Pilates exercises are simple and each class begins with warm-up exercises, stretching and deep breathing. The instructors oversee us at all times. They modify the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. These classes result in benefits that can’t be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you’re stronger) and more energy and well-being. The cost is $8 cash per class and 2022 annual club dues in January will be $20 pp. Call Mary with any questions.

A 10-week tai chi class for all students began October 7 and continues through December 9. A new 10-week class will begin on January 6, at the same time and place, 1011:30 AM, AFC/Studio. These classes are led by tai chi masters Jose Hernandez Rivera and Donna Drazenovich. All first time students need to call Alice Hutchison for further information. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that involves slow, focused movements. Because of the benefits for balance, strength, and improved breathing, it is an exercise especially suitable for seniors.

Doctors have long used word games to exercise the minds of stroke or traumatic injury patients to regain brain function and aid in recovery. There are different word games which are employed to help patients recover. Scrabble is one of the games chosen as a tool for brain injury recovery; patients using word games have acknowledged noticing faster recovery in thinking and other cognitive abilities. Aging and chronic health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes decrease seniors’ cognitive abilities. Word games can be enjoyable and friendly. Birders Group Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup Next meeting Fri., Nov. 26, Catalina Vista/Art Studio, 4 PM

The greater roadrunner, a member of the cuckoo family, is sometimes called the “All American Bird” because of the red, white and blue plumage in back of the eye. It eats mostly lizards and snakes but will snag a bird if it gets a chance, including hummingSteve Holmes photo birds. With eyes on top of their head, the hummers may fail to see the danger below. Jim is notorious for letting his opponent know when the ball is out. Actually, everyone on all five courts will know when Jim has called a ball out. Not only is Jim a great pickleball player, but a good neighbor who keeps his eyes open for anything amiss, which is very helpful. You are an inspiration, Jim, to everyone you play with. Happy birthday. Remember you are never too young to play pickleball.

Hello fun. Welcome men and women. No experience necessary. Bring your own equipment. Easy to learn. The more you play, the better you get. Did you know seniors 70 and older pitch from a shorter distance with less effort and more accuracy? The shorter distance also makes the game more fun for women. YouTube has several videos of everything related to horseshoes. Check it out. Good exercise, good people and friendly competition.
