Technology at SCOV – Where are we and where are we going?
The past year has been full of change with respect to technology at SCOV. We implemented a new website along with a mobile app and added access to NFL Sunday Ticket at the Views. But that is not the entire story.
We have effective networking in every building, and on that network, we have audio and video capability in most of our rooms. We have Smart TVs that are connected to the network as well. All of this technology has presented many challenges. Currently, technology in some facilities is not delivering the expected benefits to the community, such as audio and recording issues during Board Meetings and poor audio and lighting in the Auditorium. So what are we doing about it? We are following a plan to accomplish three things:1) fix and stabilize what we have to receive the expected benefits, 2) prioritize what additional technology we need, and 3) develop a long-term strategy for all SCOV technology usage.
In this first phase, we are systematically finding the issues and resolving them. This has required that we eliminate some hardware that has provided no value, and unfortunately, has increased complexity for the staff to operate. We have completed this in the Kiva room and The Views Restaurant. These efforts in the Auditorium are taking longer due to the specialized skills that are needed for audio and lighting. When completed, the configuration, setup and usage will be completely documented for the various building monitors and volunteer club members who are involved in event setups. In the second phase, we plan to implement a new asset management system that will enable more efficient management of our assets. The Asset Reserve Fund serves us well, and there are opportunities to make our financial decisions with better data, which this type of system affords.
We realize that technology is not the only answer. Some community members are not as comfortable as others with technology, so we must plan to provide effective support for all levels of technical ability. Keeping this in mind, the third phase will focus on developing a long-term strategy to reduce one-off software solutions, consolidate operations into
a single suite of technology, and reduce the amount of onsite equipment. These future changes will reduce technical complexity for members, reduce administrative workload, as well as streamline our technology management by utilizing a single suite of applications.

It is no secret that we occasionally hear complaints about The Views Restaurant. Feedback is always welcome. It is how we improve, and we take it seriously. But we also invite you to think about being part of the solution.
One of the best sights at SCOV is the crowd gathered on The Views lawn during weekly entertainment. Residents relax on the grass, listen to music and laugh with friends. It has become a true community tradition and one we are proud to celebrate.
While you are there, we hope you will also consider supporting The Views itself. The restaurant’s liquor license does not extend to the lawn, but you can still purchase food and beverages to enjoy and take out to the lawn. Every time you dine or grab a drink at The Views you are helping keep this amenity strong and vibrant for everyone.
Here is something to keep in mind: The Views, like our golf course, pool, and fitness center, is an amenity. It is an important part of what makes SCOV such a wonderful place to live. Most of what residents enjoy here is subsidized by your annual dues, including The Views, so that everyone can access high-quality experiences. Our goal is to deliver consistent food quality and service that residents can rely on.
Over the past year, with the help of our newly formed Food & Beverage Committee, we have made meaningful progress toward that goal. We have worked to reduce labor costs, instituted inventory control software, enhanced staff training and introduced fun theme nights for our residents. Each of these steps helps strengthen operations and improve your dining experience.
That is the standard we strive for every day: well-prepared food, attentive service and an overall experience that makes you want to return. When we achieve that consistency, we will have happier residents and a stronger sense of pride in this amenity.
Here is a simple idea: what if every SCOV resident ate at The Views just one more time each month? Imagine the impact, not just for the restaurant, but for the entire community. More guests mean more activity, more opportunities to refine service and achieve a better overall experience for everyone.
We invite you to come by The Views. Bring friends, try something new or just enjoy the view and the company.
From all of us at SCOV, we wish you a happy, healthy and joyful holiday season filled with good company, great food and gratitude for the community we share.

At Sun City Oro Valley, we believe our community’s signature appeal lies not just in stunning golf views or elegant amenities—but in the quiet assurance of a well-kept, tidy environment. Every ongoing project reinforces this commitment: new pool-andspa enhancements, new interior carpet, expanded solar, and refreshed common spaces including fresh asphalt. They all add form and function. But these upgrades also reflect a broader ethos—one where keeping our grounds and facilities neat, orderly, and inviting is a shared priority.
Clean pathways, properly maintained landscaping, and consistent signage all contribute to a cohesive, polished backdrop that enhances everyday life here. And during projects— whether upgrading heaters or installing new lighting—we stay mindful of minimizing disruption and restoring spaces to their best condition. Part of managing that process involves regular inspections, coordinated vendors, and clear schedules so residents can continue to enjoy our community without unnecessary clutter or leftover construction mess.
ronment showcases the value of living in a community that’s both active and wellmanaged. Each improvement— whether it’s new flooring in a clubroom or resurfaced walking paths— helps ensure SCOV looks as vibrant and welcoming as the people who call it home.
For those exploring SCOV as a potential new home, that attention to detail speaks volumes. The gleaming facilities, trimmed landscapes, and freshly maintained streets reflect the pride residents take in their surroundings. First impressions matter, and a tidy, well-cared-for envi-
A community that looks cared for delivers reassuring value and pride of place. At Sun City Oro Valley, our project focus isn’t just about new features—it’s about maintaining a standard of presentation that matches the quality of life we offer. Keeping SCOV neat and tidy isn’t a task reserved for one crew or one season; it’s an ongoing promise to our residents.
Copper Center Update

Copper Center
Update
– December 2025
As I write this, we’re awaiting the first community meeting and the installation of smoke detectors, the final step before our fire inspection. By the time you read this, we should have passed all inspections and hopefully received our Certificate of Occupancy although there are no guarantees.
The fire inspection has been a long process, delayed by vendor scheduling issues, competing SCOV priorities such as pools, asphalt, the void discovered during the solar installation and restaurant repairs. We also were short two maintenance staff. Initially, all the smoke detectors failed. Not because they didn’t work, but because they didn’t respond fast enough. After cleaning, 39 passed and 23 had to be replaced. Unfortunately, our detectors were no longer manufactured, so staff had to find compatible models and wait out delivery delays. The new units are on site now and installation is being arranged. Once Golder Ranch Fire completes the final inspection, we can proceed with the next eight inspections, which can happen concurrently.
Robin Coulter and Matt Deel are coordinating with vendors to meet SCOV requirements across all buildings. Security upgrades will include fob/pass access and cameras at all five entrances. The front sliding door has proprietary software requiring manufacturer approval to modify, but progress is being made. The internet is ready, and we’re gathering estimates for Wi-Fi, club door locks and some flooring.
Facilities Supervisor Matt Deel, Dave Olson, a SCOV member and contractor, and I are meeting with clubs to identify what each must have to operate. SCOV will only cover essential needs, sometimes just a locking door and Internet. Others, like Glass and Clay Clubs, require enhanced ventilation, electrical work, or removal of kitchen equipment, which will take longer and require additional permits. Once all needs, costs, and priorities are determined, a plan for initial occupancy will go to the Board for funding decisions.
We’ll keep you informed through these monthly updates and This Week in SCOV. All community meetings will be held in the Kiva Room.

Stay Updated on SCOV Projects
Did you know SCOV keeps an updated Projects page on the website? It’s a handy place to see what’s been finished, what’s in progress, and what’s next in our community.
One of the big items recently wrapped up was the asphalt work. Roads and parking areas were resealed and repaired in several locations, which should make for smoother driving and extend the life of our surfaces. Also completed was the annual overseeding of the golf course.
Planning is underway for the pool refresh and repairs at the Aquatic and Fitness Center and Desert Oasis, updated solar canopy lighting, Copper Center renovations and Activity Center audio/visual corrections and improvements. Updates will be posted on the Projects page as the schedules and details become clearer.
The page is updated, and we encourage you to take a look now and then. It’s a good way to stay informed about how SCOV is maintaining and upgrading amenities. Your patience and flexibility during projects are always appreciated, and the Projects page is there to keep you in the loop.

Don’t be a hoarder
If you plan to do supersets and want to go back and forth between two pieces of equipment, locations, or sets of dumbbells, it might be OK during non-peak times. During busy gym times, however, claiming more equipment than you’re currently using is a big no. In doing so, you’re not only taking up too much of the shared space but also preventing others from using more than one piece of equipment. Try to arrange your workout to respect the space and equipment needs of others around you. Don’t duck that eye contact.

Everyone has trash cans. Many are kept in the garage and many have made investments in order to keep their cans on the side of their homes. Section 2.5 of the Development Standards is pretty clear. “All Trash Containers must be covered and stored on a lot not visible from Neighboring Property or the street.” There are suggested materials that can be used to achieve this. If we can see your trash cans then you have not done enough to hide them. It is not sufficient just to have them behind a gate, short piece of wall, a single bush or behind your primary AC unit. We all know the term, “Out of sight, out of mind.” If you can see blue it’s time to consider an upgrade.
Several people have voiced confusion regarding whether the governing documents apply to a resident’s backyard and side yards. Do the Master Declaration, Development Standards, and Tract Declarations affect the condition of my backyard? The simple answer is yes. This includes such things as landscaping maintenance, nuisances, building upkeep, renovations, storage, etc. Section 5.4 of the Master Declaration also states: …Once duly adopted, the Development Standards shall have the same force and effect as the provisions of this Master Declaration. Our Master Declaration defines Lot as follows: Lot shall mean an individually numbered plot of land designated as a lot on any recorded subdivision plat for the Property. This includes all the land within that plot of land. Please refer to Article 4 in its entirety and Section 8.3 of the Master Declaration for further clarification.

How can I get notifications of emergency situations including wildfires and flash floods? First, when the National Weather Service issues certain weather warnings, cell towers will broadcast the alert to all connected cell users. Other applications for your phone are available. Weatherbug provides additional weather alerts including flash flood and lightning warnings. Watchduty provides alerts for nearby wildfires. You can also set other locations if you want to keep track of the area near a second home or vacation home. CodeRedMobile is used by the Town of Oro Valley to send notices to town residents. If the affected area is smaller than the town, they can geofence the alerts so they send a notice to only the affected area.

The Food & Beverage Committee has partnered with The Views restaurant management to launch an enhanced menu in early November. Based on feedback from the resident survey in This Week in SCOV, we’ve redesigned the menu to reflect what you told us matters most, fewer items with consistent high quality.
The new menu retains your favorites while addressing gaps you identified, including expanded gluten-free and vegan selections.
Introducing Our New Pizza Program - We’re thrilled to announce that The Views will now offer freshly made pizzas in two sizes, with multiple crust and topping options. Pizzas will be available for dine-in, pickup and delivery.
What’s Changed - Some menu items have been removed or modified. After careful analysis, we eliminated low-volume dishes and those that created operational challenges in the kitchen. Our goal is to deliver variety and quality while enabling the kitchen team to work more efficiently.
We appreciate your patience as we introduce these changes. We encourage you to explore the new offerings and continue sharing your feedback through comment cards and emails. Your input drives these improvements.

40th Birthday Party - Save the Date
I honestly don’t remember everything about my 40th birthday. I do remember that I thought it was a big deal at the time and that to celebrate, my wife threw me a wonderful birthday party. Perhaps the same was true for your 40th?
In 2027, Sun City Oro Valley will turn 40 years old. A Service and Support Committee, reporting to General Manager Sandy Seddon, has been created to plan and coordinate a birthday celebration in honor of this milestone event. The vision is to: 1) celebrate ALL things SCOV; 2) bring the community together for a common goal; and, 3) raise some money for various clubs in SCOV and to support resident activities.
The thought is to kick things off shortly after the first of the year, 2027 and have a month-long multitude of events to celebrate the community. We envision multiple sports tournaments, multiple performances by talented residents in the community, exhibitions by the talented artisans living here, and so much more.
The festivities will conclude with a gala event(s) to be held on February 13, 2027.
At this point, we have way more ideas than we do details but, as we formalize plans, we will communicate them with the entire community through This Week in SCOV, the Tipster and the SCOV website.
If you’d like to be part of this exciting planning process, please contact R. J. Ley.

Linda Wilkes’s love of working with jewelry extends back many years. She was very fortunate to have a wonderful teacher–her mother-in-law. She enjoys creating beautifully colored necklaces to pair with a lovely pendant. Six years ago, Linda added fused glass to her crafting repertoire. It’s a fascinating medium. Linda says that what you can create with a flat piece of glass is still amazing. Dichroic glass is a great example. The end result is profoundly dazzling.
Larry Brophy loves wood and his pieces demonstrate that. He creates useful items of domestic and exotic hardwoods for daily use in a M.C. Esher style. Larry calls his work “Functional Art”. His gnat caps keep the bugs out of those outdoor beverages and his artisan boards double for cutting and charcuterie use. Larry can be found in his favorite place, the SCOV Wood Shop.

Street Smarts and Road Safety Tips
Government Affairs works with the Oro Valley Police bringing you Coffee with a Cop and informational talks which include safety. As more seasonal residents return, the volume of vehicles including golf carts increases. With this comes an upsurge in the number of potential accidents and near misses on our streets and as you may remember, we had a death last year. Please be careful.
Reminders from Oro Valley Police include the following. Vehicles in Sun City include automobiles, trucks, golf carts, recreational vehicles and motorcycles. In addition, there are lots of pedestrians and cyclists.
There are established speed limits within Sun City, and you must come to a full stop at all stop signs, including those on golf cart paths and crosswalks. Please pay attention to pedestrian crosswalks and come to a stop for our walkers. If you are driving after dark, use your lights for safe driving. In Arizona golf carts must be licensed for public roads, drivers are to have a valid driver’s license and be at least 16 years of age. In addition, the carts must be registered with the Arizona Department of Transportation, covered by insurance, and registered with the office in Sun City.
It’s easy to become distracted in the vehicles, please focus on keeping us all safe.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf
mkropf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
December is historically the time of year when temperatures get cold enough to start having frost. Just a reminder on what frost does to the grass and procedures to follow when a delay occurs. The cold weather also lowers the soil temperatures and causes the bermudagrass to go dormant and turn brown.
Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the non-overseeded areas go dormant and turn brown they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways and tees may be damaged. If the temperature is cold, but only spotty frost, golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe the delay will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and ready for play to start. This all depends on whether fairways and tees need to be mowed or pins need to be set up.
This year the green surrounds were overseeded for the first time in many years. Now that these areas are overseeded they are also susceptible to frost damage. This will have
an impact on frost delays as well because the greens will not be accessible until the frost breaks. When the surrounds were not overseeded the greens could still be mowed, rolled and pins moved even though there was frost. If this winter gets really cold expect delays to be longer than previous years.

The first bash of the new 2025/26 season was held in late October. President Bob Gannon started out by giving the instructions on how to find all of the newly revised documents on the Views Golf Club web page. Documents that have been updated include: the Handbook, the By-laws, the League Calendar and Game Descriptions.
After calling a quorum, President Gannon presented the new By-Laws revised by the board for a vote. The By-Laws are required to be approved by the membership before they are sent to the SCOV board for approval.
President Gannon then handed out prize monies for all holes in one this past year. The winners were Chip Ross with 2, Bob Gannon and Jeffrey Clack.
The Welcome Back Tournament held on November 12 was a rousing success. There were no participation points needed to play in this event.
The season is off to a great start and with the addition of the new Chip In pot, there are more ways to come out a winner. For those of you sitting on the fence trying to decide if you want to join, now is the perfect time. The thing about playing 9 holes is it only takes a couple of hours. What that means is that you can actually play MORE golf in a week and still keep everyone happy at home. We have all levels of golfers so don’t be bashful. No one here is a pro. Come join us on Thursday mornings for some fun and comradery. Half the time, twice the fun.

Welcome back everyone. Our new league season began on November 4 this year with most of our players returning. Juanita Fischer is a new member and we are continuing our mentoring program. She will be working with mentor Claudia Svarstad. Several other women have played as guests, getting to know us better and hopefully have joined us for the season. Kick off this season was a four-person scramble followed by our first annual meeting and first Tuesday of the month luncheon.
The Catalina Cup is underway. Selected players from 13 different golf leagues around Tucson play match play. Team captains Lora McCambridge and Rob Ranson chose the players for each match.
The Presidents Cup sign-up deadline is Tuesday, December 23. This is our Net Match Play Championship. There are five different formats to be played this month and still time to join the league. If you have any questions about membership, please don’t hesitate to contact Joan Mayer, Vice President and Membership Chair.
The Nine-Hole Women’s Golf Club is one month into the season. We are a varied group of golfers from Sun City and many surrounding communities. Everyone is welcome to join. We play Thursdays, 8:30 am regardless of weather. We have a social gathering once a month for food, fun and awards. This month we’ll host our Holiday luncheon. If you are interested in joining this fun group of women golfers, ask at the Pro Shop or call/email Katie Kuczaj. Katie can be reached at 513-509-0016 or email her at Kukuczaj@hotmail.com

The Foundation SCOV (formerly Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation) supports the quality of life for SCOV residents. The Foundation has provided over $1.5 million in grants to SCOV clubs, organizations and activities since 1998.
The Foundation has awarded the SCOV Library grants to purchase large print books for the past few years. After seeing the growing circulation statistics, the Foundation recently provided another grant to help the library to continue acquiring these books. The large print books are very popular with residents and are the highest circulating collection in the library.
Foundation board members recently hosted a Donor Appreciation Party for this past year’s major contributors. Their generous donations fuel the Foundation’s mission.
In early December, SCOV residents will receive the Foundation’s annual fund-raising appeal letter. All donations are tax deductible. Please visit FoundationSCOV.org to donate and learn more.

Have you seen the new art, hung on October 1, in the Activity Center? Did you know that every three months this art is refreshed? This process takes approximately four hours, and a team of wonderful volunteers who collectively tackle this job. The volunteers remove existing art, coordinate the return of art to artists, collect new art, ensure hanging materials are correct, gather new art information for the placard hung next to the piece and hang all items in eye pleasing gatherings.
Cottonwood bark is one of the most popular medias for carvers. It has a very thick outer layer, is lightweight, soft and layered. Bark carvers use the same tools as other carvers, however, the wood will dull tools much quicker. It is recommended to carve with the grain and away from your body. A safety glove and thumb guard should be worn to protect against cuts. A brush is used to remove debris, and a mask will protect your lungs when sanding.
Bark carvers use the three basic cuts: push, pull, and stop cut.
Many times wood burning is performed on the carving to add detail. Use a small fan to direct the smoke away from you.
When finishing your project, brush the piece and apply a clear finish or a light stain to highlight detail. Some carvers will use one of the more popular sprays that are available.
Our club will be offering beginning classes this January and February, watch this column and also review the club's display window for additional information.

During November (and even October) our creative members have been busy getting ready for the holidays. Angels, snowflakes, reindeer, trees, snow people, Santa, and Mrs. Santa have been bisqued and glazed. And as you can see in the picture, some are even festooned with scarves, hats, and pompons. Wonderful work. As a reminder, in January we’ll be asking for members to make soup bowls for the Empty Bowls Project. The bowls will be sold at a March event, raising funds to benefit food banks and programs, to help individuals and families move from crisis to stability and self-sufficiency. Event attendees will enjoy delicious soups, breads, and desserts generously donated by local restaurants and food partners. Let’s exceed our 2024 bowl production and help those in need.

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in Catalina Vista/Art Studio. Anyone interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, can stop by on Monday mornings or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces can be viewed in the window and showcase in Catalina Vista and the Library.
The first picture is the “Aztec God and his Jaguar” sculptured by Gayle Franklin, which was featured in last month’s article. Unfortunately, the wrong picture was included with the article. The picture on the right is a sculpture completed by Janie Hulett. Janie used a rectangular block of wood for the armature’s body. The head and legs are wire which is embedded into the wood. She used acrylic paint for the finish. This sculpture was a gift to her son, Jon who has generations of deer that revisit his home in Minnesota. Her inspiration was a frequent visitor in his yard named “Bailey”.

We are still embroidering faces and sewing bodies, stuffing them with love and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with excitement.
Cheer Bears is a happy group that spends much time working and sharing with each other. Members enjoy each others company and share their favorite recipes and restaurants. Sometimes we even take a day off and go to those restaurants for lunch. Come and join us to create our little bears.
If you are interested in learning to run the new embroidery machine, Cheer Bears is a good place to practice your skills after being trained by Karen Frolich.
If you have some polyester fiberfill, we are in need of it to plump up the tummies of the bears. Flannel is our cloth of choice also. Donations are always accepted.

This month we are featuring two holiday projects. The picture on the left was completed by Carrie Wiley. The project was hooked with strips of wool. The flowers are referred to as Proddy flowers which are hand-crafted wool fabric flowers. A proddy tool is used to loop the flowers into the rug hooking backing. The picture on the right was completed by Coni Arseneau. The angel was completed in three separate pieces: the halo, head and shoulders, and body. She used Elmer's white glue and water to stiffen and form the angel.

Feeling stuck behind the lens? It happens to every photographer. When ideas run dry, change your perspective, literally. Try shooting at a different time of day, switch lenses or explore new locations. Revisit old photos with fresh eyes or challenge yourself with a creative constraint: one subject, one hour, one lens.
Browse work from photographers outside your usual style. Inspiration often comes from unexpected sources. Most importantly, keep shooting even when it feels uninspired. Motion creates momentum. Your next great idea could be hiding in your camera roll.
Note: Our next competition is Wednesday, December 10, 6 pm, Catalina Vista. The theme is Within SCOV. Anyone can attend. There is no December program meeting due to the holiday.

Wood Carving
Dick Minch 262-844-7444 Minch11864@msn.com
Sat., 9 am-Noon, ART/Lapidary
This month I'd like to address basic knife cuts. Carving knives are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and, of course, investment.
Carvers will acquire anywhere from two to a dozen knives, but they will use only two or three consistently. A sharp knife is an excellent tool, a dull knife is a dangerous tool. There are three basic directional cuts the carver should master. The Push Cut is the most common cut as you push the knife away from you, slicing off thin shavings. It is used for general shaping; very controlled and very safe. The Pull or paring cut is where you pull the knife towards your body. The Stop Cut is made straight down into the wood forming a stop or boundary.
Our club will offer beginning classes in January/February. Information will be posted in our display window and in this column.
For December we are highlighting an example of a segmented bowl, made entirely of mesquite, and the first attempt at making one for Tom Neillo. Tom is an evolving woodworker who started woodworking four years ago. A segmented bowl is made by gluing wood segments together to form rings. The rings are glued together to form a basic bowl and then turned on a lathe to form what you see here. This technique allows the creator to select various types of wood for the segments and vary the ring thickness to create patterns in the bowl. We will highlight some of these patterned bowls in the coming year. As this year ends, we would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year.

Many SCOV residents have reached the age of frequently looking back to yesterday while still enjoying today and hoping for many tomorrows. Poets Corner member Alice Hutchison shares an unforgettable emotional experience from a long ago visit to Northern Ireland in “Connemara.”
“There is a raw beauty in this bleak desolate land of gnarly grey mountains set against a foreboding sky
I’m on a pilgrimage walking in boggy grasses buffeted by winds alone, contemplative feeling my heart connect with the eternal being of a deceased loved one
This unforgiving landscape seems lifeless and empty yet something lives I feel its memories call out to me tender me and cradle me in longing
How about a New Year’s resolution to share your life experiences in poetry? Newcomers are always welcome to Zoom with us.

Conscious Aging
Pres. Phyllis Burks 520-245-2785
SCOVConsciousAging@gmail.com
Wed., 9-10:30 am, AC/Navajo
Conscious aging is about the inner work of reorienting ourselves as we turn from our roles we assumed while managing careers and tending families, to turning inward and cultivating a deeper awareness of who we are now. Our goal is to discover how to face the known and unknown challenges of aging. With the help of our community, we are pondering the questions: Who am I? What are my values? What do I believe? What matters most to me?
This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation and book study that draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation and discussion. Please contact Phyllis for information or email the club.

Did you know that dance is good for your brain health? Many studies have shown that dance helps reduce stress, increases levels of feel-good hormones and helps develop neural connections. In addition, dance involves both mental effort and social interaction which helps reduce the risk of dementia. Honestly, those of us in the Ballroom Dance club just like to dance. We celebrate our successes and laugh at our mistakes. We’re a fun, supportive group and are offering both beginner and intermediate dance classes this winter. There are no dances scheduled for December, but we have practice sessions on Wednesdays, 5 pm, Fitness Center. Lessons and dances will start again in January.
For more information, get on our email list by writing to Sara at scovstarlightdance@gmail.com.
Dancing in community lifts our hearts and spirits. It is also excellent for brain and cardiovascular health. Our club requires no membership fees, no partners, no meetings and no patterns to memorize. All dances are taught prior to dancing for low-stress fun. New dancers are always welcome and encouraged. Join us as we dance our way around the world.
If you are a Veteran, join us Sunday, December 7, 11 am-1 pm, Catalina Vista for a potluck and open mic luncheon with the Marana Veterans Club. Club activities and relevant issues are sent by email. Our current membership exceeds 380 Veterans. If

Aquatone is a water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance. It includes warm-up, cool down, various swim strokes and strength exercises. We use buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most of these items are available at the pool. Participants need to be able to do a basic swim stroke. The class is being taught by club member volunteers. There is no fee for Aquatone. Please call Irmel for more detailed information before your first visit.
Come enjoy the weather while getting healthy exercise. Our meeting time is 1 pm. Join us Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Arthritis Foundation recommends meeting when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer.
Our club performs gentle exercises which target all muscles. They are used by several health organizations to increase strength and balance, mobility and flexibility.
Exercise is helpful in managing arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Some new members have expressed surprise at how quickly the first sessions had already increased their abilities to move. Others commented they noticed improved stamina.
New members are always welcome. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercises and love all the friends I have made,”
Your first class is free. Yearly dues are $5. There is no fee per class. Hope to see you there.
As cooler weather arrives, it’s a wonderful time to walk, bike and hike in our beautiful region. To help you make the most of these outdoor activities, consider joining a one-hour exercise class that prepares your muscles for those extra miles. Strong legs and arms are vital not only for biking and hiking, but also for daily chores in the garden or at home.
Led by Sally, our classes take place three times a week and are designed to be fun and varied. Sally ensures everyone uses weights and bands safely, since incorrect technique can do more harm than good. Every participant is encouraged to work at their own pace and enjoy the experience while strengthening all major muscle groups.
Membership is just $3 cash in an envelope, and class cards are available for $30, covering 12 sessions.

The core muscles are deep abdominal and back muscles that help you stabilize your pelvis and spine. Each class begins with warm-up exercises. The actual Pilates exercises result in benefits that can't be beat: better balance (fewer falls), more flexibility (joints move again), increased muscle tone (you're stronger) and more energy and wellbeing. The instructors always oversee us and suggest modifications for the most strenuous exercises for anyone with limitations. The cost is $8 cash pp/per class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Call Mary for more information.

Yellow-collared (l) and Rosy-faced Lovebirds (r) or possible hybrids
From a birding perspective, it has been an interesting autumn here in SCOV. Members of our birding group have reported four species of birds that are very rare or were previously unseen in SCOV. Two were in the jay family that are common at higher elevations, but not down here in the valley. These are the Woodhouse's scrub jay, and Steller’s jay, first sighting. The other first-sighted species are the cute rosyfaced aka peach-faced and yellow-collared lovebirds. They are African species never recorded before in SCOV. If the bird on the left in the photo is a yellow-collared lovebird it would be new to most of us, but the rosy-faced lovebirds frequent the Gilbert/Chandler areas.
We are a 150+ member group that meet regularly on field trips, traveling to various birding destinations. Contact Peggy Smith for more information and to get on our trip list.
