NHBF DIRECTOR RECOGNISED IN WOMEN IN TRADE ASSOCIATIONS POWERLIST BBC reports on rise of allergic reactions in the nail sector BBC News aired a TV report last month, led by journalist, Niki Cardwell, reporting that ‘growing numbers of people are developing life-changing allergies to some gel nail products’. The report interviewed dermatologists, including Dr. Deirdre Buckley of the British Association of Dermatologists, who urged people to stop using ‘DIY home gel kits’ on their nails. Nail industry affiliates, Suzanne Clayton, founder of Facebook group, Nail Tech Awareness, and Marian Newman BEM, founder of the Federation of Nail Professionals, also contributed to the report. Marian told BBC News viewers: “People that buy DIY kits and do gel polish nails at home – please don’t. What should be on the labels is that these products should be used by a professional only. “Choose your nail professional wisely by their level of education, training and qualifications. Don’t be shy to ask. They won’t mind.” The report shared that reactions often occur when gel products are applied at home, or by someone who is inadequately trained. It considered the effects of overexposure to gel polish products, as well as ingredients that are most likely to contribute to an allergic reaction in high quantities. A statement from the government’s office for product safety & standards reads: “All cosmetics made available in the UK must comply with strict safety laws. This includes a list of ingredients to enable consumers with allergies to identify products that may be unsuitable for them.” Scan here to watch an Instagram discussion between Scratch’s Helena Biggs and Marian Newman BEM about the report, and what it means for the nail industry

Nail NATION EU proposes penalties against greenwashing on ecolabels to fight misleading ecolabelling Research shows energy bills make up 40% of hair & beauty business costs Energy bills make up 40% of the average hair and beauty salon’s total business costs, according to research by Uswitch for Business. More than 11,000 salons are financially struggling, with 24% saying they find it challenging to pay their energy bills, amid reports that clients are cutting spend in salons. The research also revealed that 40% of clients are choosing less expensive treatments, 35% are leaving longer intervals between visits, and 29% are leaving lower tips. To address these costs, many salons have increased prices, made energy-efficient changes, such as turning off or reducing air conditioning or heating and investing in better appliances, and trained staff in energyefficient measures. If energy costs continue to rise, 44% of salon owners have reported that they may have to reduce their treatment menus, and one in three said they may have to downsize or close. Jack Arthur, energy expert at Uswitch for Business, says: “The hair and beauty industry is an essential part of the UK economy, providing jobs and services to millions. However, reduced footfall and sky-high energy costs put salon and spa owners in a really difficult position. Business decision-makers should make sure they are aware of the terms and end date of their current energy contract, so they can shop around for the best rates at the time of renewal.” His tips include: 1. Check the status and stipulations of your gas and electricity contracts. 2. Identify your ‘switching window’ to change to a cheaper deal. 3. Seek expert advice when looking for a competitive energy deal. 4. Speak to suppliers if you are struggling to pay your bills. 5. Make moves to improve your business energy efficiency. www.uswitchforbusiness.com

The EU has proposed the Green Claims Directive, which includes stricter rules for greenwashing and the approval of ecolabels to combat misleading environmental claims. The proposed legislation aims to provide consumers with reliable information about a product’s sustainability. A 2020 Commission study found that 40% of green claims are ‘completely unsubstantiated’, and 53.3% are ‘vague, misleading or unfounded’. The proposal seeks to ensure that environmental claims are validated with credible and proportionate substantiation, backed by scientific evidence.^ Environment commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevicius, who presented the proposal, comments: “We believe this proposal will bring real change, and will empower all people who truly want to choose products based on their reduced impact on our planet.” Offending companies may face fines, revenue confiscation and exclusion from public procurement processes and funding. The new restrictions will be enforced by national authorities, which EU member states will oversee, that will control green claims, publicly disclose findings and fine misleading companies. Micro-enterprises with a turnover of less than €2 million or with less than 10 employees will be exempt from the proposal. A Commission official comments: “We need to make sure that companies who are doing well, who are really substantiating their claims, are given an advantage in these marketing practices and do not compete with companies who are not solid in the claims they make.”

CTPA elects new chair & vice-chair to its board The Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA) has elected Thierry Cheval, MD & chairman at L’Oréal UK & Ireland, as chair. He succeeds Debbie Rix, who stepped back from the CTPA board in March. Cheval comments: “I am honoured to take the role of CTPA chair, and I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the talented CTPA team, the wider board and all members. It has never been more important to have an active and responsible cosmetic industry, and to work together to ensure that the industry continues to act Thierry Cheval Chris Barron to protect the consumer and the environment, while allowing for the continued development of innovative products that are essential for health and self-esteem. “The personal care sector plays a critical role in society, from its value and contribution to the economy, to offering employment opportunities, to the wellbeing of consumers. I am fully committed to supporting a positive and progressive future for the industry.” Chris Barron, general manager for personal care at Unilever UK&I, has taken over from Cheval’s role as vice-chair, and comments: “Unilever has had a longstanding and strong relationship with the CTPA, and I am looking forward to contributing further to the valuable work it undertakes for the industry as a whole.” www.ctpa.org.uk

Metallic pigments market to reach $3.4bn by 2033 The metallic pigments market is projected to advance by 4% and reach a value of $3.4 billion by the end of 2033. A report by market research company, Fact.Mr, attributes the growth to demand from industries including cosmetics, printing and coatings. The report reads: “The development of various innovative metal oxides with new flake technology and unique substrate layering is predicted to open up lucrative opportunities in the target market. Celebrating in Nailympia London’s Top UK Tech 2022 - Division 3, Andreea Simona Ignat, delivers two striking cover images to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Scratch magazine ALEX FOX REPORTS

A

s summer 2022 came to a close, I was approached by industry colleague, Andreea Simona Ignat, who had a dream. She asked: “How can my work be featured on the front cover of Scratch magazine – and how can I showcase my nails at the forefront of Nailympia?”

December. It was a hectic plan, but we gathered the team and decided to go for it, and I drove to Andreea’s studio in central London with a suitcase of props and two models in tow.

Style & sculpt

In order to give the photo shoot the necessary time it required to capture Since discovering Scratch back in 2014, numerous images, the nails were crafted Andreea has been eager to create an image in advance. After a long discussion on nail to adorn its cover. This month, as the brand shapes, styles and colours, we agreed celebrates its 20th anniversary, she showcases that one hand should sport an elongated, two, as Scratch marks its May editions with a elegant set of Russian almond nails. double cover. “I wanted the opportunity not These would be in a multi-coloured 3D just to be profiled, but to tick off a goal on French style. my bucket list,” she reveals. “I chose to sculpt Russian almond nails, I told her: “Create imagery that the teams as it’s the shape I love most,” shares at Scratch and Nailympia will love. Make Andreea. “It’s a very sophisticated and it original and striking, with a story centred complicated shape to sculpt, as if you around nails. The two models, a series of props, clothing, embedded 3D French style was designed jewellery, accessories and a mood board to showcase my kills, and I had to push of ideas that excited me. Andreea would myself out of my comfort zone and stretch design and craft the nails, commission a new skill boundaries to realise the set of make-up artist, provide the photo studio and nails that I envisioned. a photographer. COVER NAILS

“I use the Glitterbels L&P system in my salon, as it has a wide variety of core cover powders, as well as coloured and glitter powders,” comments Andreea. “They are ideal for using in the salon, and for competition work.” The nail pro used the brand’s Dehydrator and Acid-free Primer, with powder shades; Glass Slippers, Sugared Almond, Purple Rain, Dragon Fruit and Hot Crush, and the No-wipe Top Coat.

range of images were captured as the models changed looks, clothing and even location, since the salon’s Victorian staircase afforded some fun, ad hoc photo opportunities outside of the studio setup.

A busy nail tech and educator by day, this meant Andreea spent hours in her evenings constructing her nail vision. “The inspiration behind the nails was my mum, who loves flowers,” she reveals. “I sculpted 3D roses using plasteline atop a relatively simple nail shape, so that the roses would take centre stage.”

Captured concepts Returning to Andreea’s Moorgate-based salon on day two of the project, the team set to work early to get cameraready. Placing all props together in one area and setting up a make-up station, the team next trailed through the mood board to explore settings, styles and poses. Meanwhile, Andreea adhered her five extreme nails to the model. One might think that a team of six working within a small space could prove challenging. However, a shared thrill of the chase, a plethora of ideas and mutual respect for each other’s roles meant the day was fun, creative and inspiring. A wide

Suffice to say, of the multitude of imagery taken that day, a set of Nailympia images was captured and the double covers to celebrate 20 years of Scratch magazine were also fashioned. “I’ve been competing at Nailympia since 2014, and have always admired the images that were featured on the competition banners,” smiles Andreea. “I never believed I’d see my work on the Nailympia marketing materials, but I pushed myself out of a negative mindset and stepped out of my comfort zone. I asked Alex if the image for 2023 had been finalised, and if not, what criteria needed to be reached to create it. Her response was very positive, and I was given the opportunity to produce an image. I feel great joy from seeing my nails across Nailympia 2023’s branding and have since realised that if you’re too afraid to ask, you’ll never know what could have been. Now, I thank myself for stepping up. Two dreams have been realised in one year: a Scratch cover and Nailympia imagery. The question for me now is, what’s next?”

Meet Carter

Scratch has welcomed 19-yearold editorial intern, Carter Rogers, to the team. They are seeking publishing and events experience to prepare for a future in the media industry. “I’ve always had an interest in media and photography, especially contrast in colour and design, but I couldn’t explore this until I was in sixth form,” Carter shares. “I love to write, and I’m currently working on a fiction novel in my free time. Watch this space!” As a self-described film buff, Carter also enjoys watching productions from other countries, taking an interest in the different ways content is filmed and created. Carter’s favourite nail shade is aqua blue, and opts for pastel hues in summer months. They prefer minimalist styles, with simple and short, plain colour finishes.

COMING UP…

Helena will be hotfooting to Birmingham for the fifth instalment of The Event by Sweet Squared on 21-22 May. Nail, hair and beauty pros will gather for educational workshops, a party, and to listen to talks from special guests. Team Scratch will be hosting Scratch Stars Awards finalists in eight categories at the London College of Beauty Therapy (LCBT) on 31 May, as they compete in a bid to be champions for 2023. 20 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

MAKING MOVES WITH

o V o n i M Immerse in competition tips & nail tales from master nail stylist, MINO VO…

How to form a great competition team

A

successful competition team is one that trains together, wins together and celebrates each other’s successes. The members support one another, like a family, and encourage growth.

ABOUT MINO VO Mino Vo is ‘The Avant-Garde Nail Artist’, a multi award-winning nail aficionado with over 60 competition titles under his belt. An international educator, he travels the world teaching nail services and extreme shapes, and has developed a variety of nail tools to support his work and that of fellow nail pros. Mino runs a salon and academy in north London.

I run a very busy salon in North London, with a large tekking team. Last year, I put together members of staff to create a competition team for Nailympia London, hoping it would spur on their desire to excel. In addition, some of my former students asked if I could train them for competitions, which led me to creating a team with techs in both Division 1 and Division 2. All members were former students, and many already knew one another, and their bond was only strengthened through the competition process.

Mino created these gothic almond nails for spring, following Forming the competition team was a a class with Olena Özman. big responsibility, and there was a lot of They feature double smile work in the run-up to the event. As well as lines and encapsulated supporting my team of seven, I was also dried flowers, glitter getting ready to compete in Division 3. and shells. But the hard work paid off – as my team was very successful, which was a reflection of the hours they spent practicing. Many members of the team have since won at Professional Beauty competitions, too, and I am very proud to be their mentor.

Looking forward

Having a competition team can help you build a good reputation as an educator, because it shows that you have supported the journey of winners 30 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

and champions. In return, this can help you attract more students, or if you are a brand, this can offer great exposure. For me, what’s more important is to push future generations of nail artists to grow, in order for our industry to thrive. Competition training has highlighted mistakes, and fixing them has helped me to understand and improve my own nails, and see them from a different point of view. If you are keen to join a team, it’s important to identify one that will help you to grow your skills. The right team and mentor can help you reach new levels of skill and creativity, but the wrong team and mentor can be demotivating. This is why I create small teams; so that I can spend quality time supporting each tech.

Building relationships

To maintain a good relationship with my team members, I make sure I am always able to give them more knowledge and room to grow. For this to be possible, I update my knowledge regularly and train with other educators as frequently as possible. My team also trains together every week. If I am in London, I will help them with techniques that need work, but even if I am out of the country, the team still trains together. It is very motivating when they see their skills grow, and it makes them want to work even harder. Every team member will have strengths and weaknesses, but it’s important to encourage them to find and develop their niche.

Out & about Reigning Nailympia Global Champion, Olena Özman, visited the UK to offer training in combined manicure and gothic almond techniques across two days. She also covered pink & white application in a one-day private training session for my team. The three days of education were packed with valuable knowledge and information, and we had so much fun! I also judged at the FNP & Professional Beauty nail competition and met up with so many nail industry experts, including nail artists & brand owners, Kirsty Meakin and Annabel Maginnis, Nail Alliance founder, Danny Haile, and Nailympia global director, Alex Fox.

Team talk Ha Le came to me as a student around 12 months ago, and her style and attention to detail really stood out. Due to the great skill she demonstrated during the Avant-Garde Nail class, I invited her to work at my salon in North London. Ha Le

Clients love Ha Le’s nail art skills and she is very booked up. She competed for the first time at Nailympia London 2022 and scooped seven medals, as well as the Art Winner Of Winners title in Division 1. Ha Le has a very unique style and a personality that will brighten anyone’s day. She is so well liked by our team and the salon clients, and has worked on many shoots for music videos and magazines. @hlp.nails.by.ha

“The right team and mentor can help you reach new levels of skill and creativity, but the wrong team and mentor can be demotivating.” Mino developed this shape, ‘Berlin’, for a Nailympia Online competition. It is the shape he is most requested to teach, and he describes it as ‘no longer a stiletto, but an almond with a different needle point.’

Team Scratch marks the magazine’s 20-year milestone with a roundup of highlights, key stats & future plans

POWER IN PINK

How it started

Scratch was launched by Scott Scott Derbyshire & Alex Fox Derbyshire and Alex Fox, who met while working at Beauty & Health Publishing. Alex was the editor of Nails Plus, and Scott was the group sales director. Company changes led to the redundancy of Scott and resignation of Alex, and the duo teamed up to launch Scratch. From concept to creation, it took six weeks to produce the first issue. The editorial team originally operated from Alex’s house. As the team grew, it moved to an office above a gift shop at Shepreth Wildlife Park, Hertfordshire, which was – and still is – owned by Alex’s family. Scott worked from his home conservatory from 2006. Now, the Scratch office is based in the quaint town of Westerham, Kent.

How it’s going

The Scratch brand’s signature shade is a punchy, fuchsia pink, designed to attract attention and make a statement. You’ll see the hue featured across the magazine, Scratch website and on social media.

The first front cover of Scratch magazine was courtesy of CND™ (Creative Nail Design, Inc.)

Over the past two decades, Scratch has expanded into the competition and awards arenas, and Alex stepped away from her editor-in-chief role to focus on Nailympia Competitions, Scratch’s sister brand. Helena Biggs, who began her Scratch journey in 2009 and has been editor of the title since 2013, is joined on the editorial team by news & features writers, Chloe Randall and Rebecca Hitchon, and copywriter, Callie Iley. Art editor, Jess Wilkie, designs and expertly presents Scratch’s articles, and Ian Archbold, Laura Tarling and Lisa Ebbens support Members of the team in the team in sales, marketing and Brussels, Belgium for the Scratch Christmas ‘Do 2022. accounts roles respectively.

What’s in a name?

Alex’s brother’s best friend, Nick Mellor, owner of Honest Ideas marketing agency, was the person who named Scratch. “We were in a Cambridge nightclub, it was kicking out time and I asked him, ‘Nick, if you had a nail magazine, what would you call it?’” says Alex. “He turned and said to me, ‘Scratch’.”

Scratch launched a photographic nail competition, The Great Scratch Shoot Out, in 2004 to inspire the global nail industry to create stunning nail imagery. The annual event has encouraged techs to push their creative boundaries and explore working with stylists and photographers. This year’s competition kicks off next month!

INDUSTRYCELEBRATION

In the press The Scratch Stars Awards

Scratch launched the Scratch Stars Awards in 2012 to recognise and reward nail professionals for their business acumen, passion, customer care and nail skill. The first awards event was hosted at London’s iconic Café de Paris, with this year’s event to be held at The Underglobe, Bankside. Now in its 11th year, the awards is spearheaded by managing editor, Helena Biggs, who reviews scoresheets and categories in line with industry changes, and oversees plans for the infamous annual Scratch Stars Party. This event has featured celebrity hosts including Rylan Clark, Duncan James, Dan Lobb and Scott Mills, with performances from the likes of Amelia Lily, Damage and Tinchy Stryder. Check out the 2023 finalists on page 60 and find out how to snap up tickets to this year’s party, to be held on Sunday 23 July.

“When we launched Scratch, the nail industry was buoyant, but it struggled to be recognised within the shadows of the beauty industry. Within five years of launching Scratch, we witnessed a significant increase in growth and identity, but I never expected what happened next. In 2009, the professional nail industry saw the launch of gel polish, which changed the world of nails as we know it.”

SCRATCH STAT

In the last two decades, Scratch magazine has welcomed two editors, 16 writers, four designers, two marketeers, eight sales people and four account managers.

Scott Derbyshire, co-founder

Alex Fox introduced Nailympia (formerly The Nail Olympics) to London in 2005 and has since grown its profile and reputation dramatically. This year, there are seven annual Nailympia events taking place worldwide; in London, Germany, Anaheim, Orlando, San Antonio, Columbus and Brazil.

As public interest in nail styling has intensified, the Scratch team has been called upon by the mainstream media to provide comment. Quotes from managing editor, Helena, have appeared in the likes of Marie Claire, The Independent and The Guardian. Helena was also approached to write a book, Nail Art: Inspiring Designs By The World’s Leading Nail Technicians (published 2013), which featured notable nail pros and sold 100,000 copies in six weeks. A year later, a second book; Nail Style: Amazing Designs By The World’s Leading Nail Techs, was published, and 2016 saw the launch of third book, Nail Art Projects. Co-founder and former editor-in-chief, Alex Fox, produced The Nail Style Book; the first step-by-step, UK-based nail tome, written by Sue Marsh and Jacqui Jefford. It featured Boy George, Mel B, props from Texas singer, Sharleen Spiteri, and early London Fashion Week nail imagery from 2001, in collaboration with the first UK nail magazine, Nails Plus, founded in Dec 1997.

SO IN STYLE

Nail brand, Nubar released two nail lacquers in 2011, named ‘Scratch’ and ‘Gloss’, in the brand’s signature pink shade. Lecenté also paid homage to the magazine with a fuchsia nail art glitter.

SCRATCH ON TV

Alex has represented Nailympia in a documentary on Australia’s VICE channel, as well as within TV5 Canada’s World Champions documentary series, and on TVN in Poland. In 2010, Helena appeared on ITV’s Daybreak with fantasy nails and full costume to showcase the craft, and discussed the nail style again two years later: this time for Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. She appeared alongside nail artist, Kirsty Meakin, offering an insight into the nail style for viewers and hosts, Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy. Most recently, Helena was approached by production company, Dragonfly TV, to appear on the Teen Mum Academy programme it created for E4. Helena mentored teenage mum, Antonia, who aspired to become a nail professional. She set Antonia tasks, provided feedback and served up industry advice.

The editorial team has interviewed a number of celebrities about their nail preferences over the past two decades, including Nicole Scherzinger, Pixie Lott, Leona Lewis, Jess Wright, Pamela Anderson, Billie Faiers and Dita von Teese.

Scratch has been proud to support a number of charities over the last two decades, including Nailing Mental Health, the Hair & Beauty Charity and Future Dreams, via the Nail Breast Cancer initiative. When purchasing a subscription to Scratch via the website, shoppers are given the option to donate £1 to the Hair & Beauty Charity, which provides practical and financial support to those in the industry who are most in need. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October, Scratch supports and promotes the Nail Breast Cancer initiative. It encourages salons, nail technicians and therapists to add £1 to each of their treatments, which is donated to breast cancer charity, Future Dreams.

FUTURE THOUGHTS

Scott Derbyshire, co-founder & publisher “Print publishing is changing, and you have to embrace change. Alex Fox, co-founder, former editor-in-chief & Nailympia global director “Some of us still love the printed word in both magazines and books, and therefore Scratch has a healthy future in print. Meanwhile, the new generation of nail techs will embrace it in its many other forms as it evolves with the digital world. “At its core, Scratch is a vehicle of communication, a place to discover the latest and greatest products and techniques, and to find inspiration and education all wrapped up in a fun, funky yet reliable and dependable package. It’s there to meet and greet the new faces of nails, while celebrating and showcasing a wealth of experts. Nail content, whether showcased in print, in-person or online, will always garner attention, and I love working for a brand that can offer opportunities and information to those behind the nail desk. Scratch’s ethos is to inform, educate and inspire, and with the growth of the competition side of the business, we can add ‘reward’ to that list, and continue to thrust talented nail professionals into the spotlight.”

past, and wishes he had undertaken a training course sooner. “While it’s fun to create nail designs yourself, it shouldn’t be your first step into the nail world. After everything I’ve put my fingernails through by using nail products without education, I recognise the importance of knowing about health & safety first. Now, I feel like I can start again on my nail journey,” he explains.

n entering The GelBottle Inc’s headquarters in Brighton, I heard laughter coming from a room at the back of the company’s offices. Inside was influencer, James Welsh, who despite boasting nearly 1.5 million YouTube subscribers for his skincare content, had a palpable passion and excitement for nails as he applied DesignEx Pro™ tips on one of TGB’s staff members. He was closely watched by the brand’s training & education manager, Giorgia Cappella, who was in charge of running James’ three-day Full GelBottle Course in a oneto-one format – something which she described as ‘easy’, thanks to the nail enthusiast’s desire to learn and perfect his nail skills. “After reading Scratch’s interview with James in the November 2022 edition, and learning of his aspiration to do nails, a member of TGB’s marketing team saw an opportunity to support his learning journey,” shares Giorgia. “TGB Academy has been able to help someone who already has a strong following to promote why education is so important, and to develop in the right direction by being able to use products properly.” James openly admits he has made mistakes regarding how he’s used nail products in the

James’ first day of training covered theory, including health & safety, contraindications, hygiene, nail anatomy and physiology, and factors affecting nails, such as medication. Product training focused on the gel polish manicure and nail art. Day two saw the YouTuber educated on to how to safely and accurately apply a BIAB™ overlay and create a French manicure, before he was introduced to gel extensions on his final day. Training covered the GelPot range, DesignEx Pro™ system and how to successfully apply tips and forms. “I think DesignEx Pro™ is the system that James is going to benefit from most,” reveals Giorgia. James tells Scratch that learning about DesignEx Pro™ was one of his favourite parts of the training, but he had been most looking forward to getting to grips with BIAB™. Upon completion of the training, James was presented with a qualification and certificate by a proud Giorgia. “I can’t say on my skincare YouTube channel that I’m a dermatologist – but on my nail channel, I can say I’m a nail tech,” he enthuses. “I’m looking forward to creating content, not from a position of

With skincare, I feel that there’s only so far I can go, whereas with nails, there’s always something to learn or new trends to try.” He reveals that he also enjoys designing press-on nails, so would love to do this more regularly. “It was great to watch James naturally fall into the nail tech role, working on his model with great prowess. The resulting nails were brilliant,” adds Giorgia. James Welsh fans, keep an eye out; the beauty celebrity’s nail journey is only just beginning.

While your business revolves around your clientele and promoting their health and wellbeing, it’s crucial to think about your own – especially during pedicure services, which have a unique setup. If your setup is causing you to have bad posture, not only could it severely impact you, but also your business. If possible, your back should be straight, with your legs as close to a 90-degree angle as possible: a position that may take adjustments to achieve at each appointment, as the needs of every client differ.

pkeep of tools

Tools are an integral part of a pedicure service, so it’s vital to take care of them, to avoid reducing their lifespan. Bad care makes them not only less effective, requiring additional force from you, the tech, which is transferred onto the client, but also dangerous for both parties. Be mindful of where you place tools after using, sanitising and disinfecting them, and store them in protective casing so that sharp edges aren’t touching or resting on surfaces.

aluing services

“It is common for nail techs to offer a standard gel pedicure service, providing prep, a tidy up and gel colour, with pricing often similar to that of a standard gel manicure,” shares Giorgia Cappella. “They may go a step beyond this and also offer a luxury pedicure treatment, which could include a scrub, mask, hot towel soak and massage. “This is a premium service, so requires a premium price: often no less than £15 extra on top of a basic gel pedicure cost.” The same pricing system can be beneficial when costing polish pedicures. Many techs use ‘levels’ or add-ons to differentiate and cost their nail art offerings, and pedicure services can also benefit from this tiered pricing, which considers the complexity and duration of the service.

ear-round pedis

“Footcare is incredibly important, but it’s something that many people forget about until the summer months, when they have their feet on show,” shares Lauren Holmes. “Feet should be cared for year-round – and this is difficult for clients to do themselves, therefore it is imperative that they seek the services of a professional, who can point out when something’s not quite right.” Promote the importance of regular pedicures through your marketing materials, targeting clients that suffer with a build-up of hard skin, calluses or joint and muscle pain, so that you can ensure the best health of their toenails, skin and feet, notes Giorgia Cappella. “Conditions such as cracked heels and ingrown toenails may appear over prolonged periods without care,” comments Rosanna Hatherell. “Being on top of clients’ footcare maintenance will also decrease the chances of infection from poor hygiene,” adds Claire Aggarwal. So how often should you be promoting that clients book a pedicure service? “I recommend that clients have a pedicure treatment at least every six weeks, to ensure their nail and skin health is maintained and kept in optimum condition,” comments Chloe Leigh Power.

W

hen not to treat

“A general rule with foot and nail conditions is if in doubt, do not treat and refer to a GP or specialist,” shares Rachel Gribble. It is not your job to diagnose, but ensure you are confident in recognising conditions that serve as a reason not to carry out a treatment, so you can refer clients to a medical professional, agrees Lauren Holmes. “This is because you are carrying out cosmetic and not medical pedicures. It is in your best interest to keep clients’ foot health priority, and missing or ignoring conditions could put you or other clients at risk,” she explains. “Foot conditions can be contagious or damaging to nails, and should be identified in a client’s consultation form or skin and nail analysis,” adds Giorgia Cappella. “Common conditions include fungal infections like athlete’s foot, viral infections such as warts and verrucas, and onycholysis (separation of the nail from the nail bed).” Rachel Gribble mentions that ingrown toenails are another condition that should be referred to a medical practitioner, but it is your duty to help prevent this.

Claire Howard • Are you mobile and convenient for clients that feel more comfortable in their own environment? • Are you a busy city centre salon that is open for long hours with Instagrammable interiors?

2

“Your USP is what makes you stand out from the crowd. Use it in your social media marketing to attract clients that are looking for what you have to offer. One salon doesn’t fit all, and different people seek different things, so make sure you clearly advertise your USP and incentivise your ideal clients. “Once you have secured a client, deliver what you have promised, to show that they were right to book with you. Give them a great service and an excellent result. Ensure they are confident with their aftercare to get the best from their treatment.”

3

Loyalty schemes

Give your client a loyalty card at their first appointment, and stamp it every time they return for a treatment. Offer a discount or free gift once the card has been filled, incentivising the client to return. You could also offer a points system on spend, which can be redeemed for goods.

5

Social media

4

Special offers

The cost of living crisis is impacting those at both sides of the nail desk, so instead of devaluing your services with discounts that could affect your bottom line, consider ways to get something in return. For example, offer your regular nail clients money off another treatment you offer, such as a facial or lash service, when they book it for the first time. If they enjoy it, it could lead to potential regular bookings in addition to their nail treatments. You could consider a special offer on multiple services, such as a bridal package or 10% off if clients book a combined mani and pedi treatment. This fills your appointment slots with ease. To make clients feel extra special, you could offer a birthday discount or free gift, such as a hand cream or cuticle oil, when they book within a month of their special day. Word of mouth is a valuable tool, and that spreads to social media and the web. Consider offering a free cuticle oil if a client leaves a review for your business, or posts a picture of their nails on social media with your business tagged. That way, their followers can see your handiwork – which could lead to new bookings.

Refer a friend

Encourage recommendations with a refer a friend scheme, where the existing client benefits if they have a friend who books an appointment and mentions their name upon booking. “A refer a friend incentive could be a 15-minute free nail art add-on for your client, if their friend mentions them by name when booking,” advises Claire Howard. “The word ‘free’ in an offer tends to attract more attention than a percentage discount.”

Your social media platforms are the equivalent of a shop window for potential clients, so use them effectively. They offer opportunity to showcase your work and USP. “Most of my clientele have found me via social media platforms or recommendations from existing clients,” says Jennie Padbury, Glitterbels education ambassador. Jennie Padbury “A strong presence on social media with clear, striking images has been my greatest advertising tool. Clients have often told me they have chosen me because they love the style of nails I create. I regularly post images of my workspace and snippets of everyday life, so that clients get to know me and understand what to expect when they visit.”

The implications of

OVER-FILING

Identify, prevent & soothe over-filed nails with advice from fellow nail pros…

Over-filing leads to weak, vulnerable natural nails prone to breaking, as it deteriorates the nail plate’s strong, protective layers of keratin. Overlays and enhancements may begin to lift as product will no longer adhere well to the natural nail, leading to service breakdown and discomfort for your client.

10 signs of over-filed nails: 1. Bending and breaking.

Theresa Foddering

“It’s so easy to over-file nails,” says Theresa Foddering, head of education at Lecenté. “Usually, over-filing happens gradually over time, instead of in just one service. Only new nail plate growth should be etched per service. As the nail grows, the nail plate on the free edge may have seen five or six services, and if it’s been etched every time, it can lead to a very thin, damaged nail. We only have 10% of the nail plate to work with before reaching soft layers.

“Aggressive removal methods, firm cuticle prep and picking enhancements all contribute to thinning of the nail plate. Over-filed nails must be left alone; do not file or buff the nail plate any further. Trim the nail, keep it short and neat to prevent splitting, and condition with oil regularly. Allow the damage to fully grow out before applying artificial coatings.”

4. Redness or ‘rings of fire’. 5. Sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. 6. Heat spikes. 7. Leukonychia or larger white patches. 8. Bumps or grooves. 9. Splinter haemorrhages. 10. Nail separation (onycholysis).

“When buffing, prepping or etching the nail plate, a white spot may become visible, which is a sign of trauma and warns the tech to proceed with care,” Theresa Foddering notes. “Unfortunately, it may not be obvious that thinning of the nail plate is occurring, and it may seem sudden when a multitude of conditions appear – and panic can set it. Knowing and understanding a client’s individual nail plate and the products and methods you use is key.”

“If redness appears on the nail, you have started over-filing. Stop the process and move on.” 56 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“Understanding which grit to use for each part of the nail service is essential to prevent over-filing when manually filing the natural nail or using an E-file. Update your understanding of the E-file bits that should and shouldn’t be used on the natural nail. By taking a gentle and conservative approach to filing, techs can help ensure that their client’s nails remain healthy and strong.” BECCA BUTTERWORTH Owner of Becca Butterworth’s Beautitude & Gelish master educator – Barnsley, South Yorkshire @becca_butterworths_beautitude “You can avoid over-filing by using a high grit buffer, such as the Gelish 100/180-grit buffer, and only buffing new growth. When finish-filing enhancements, be sure to only file the product, not the nail, taking extra care around the cuticle when thinning the product for a flush finish.”

Becca Butterworth shares a photo of a new client’s nail that presented a deep groove, caused by over-filing.

“Remove all product from the surface of the nail and do not apply nail enhancements until the natural nail is healthy again. Keep the natural nail relatively short, to minimise breakage so the nails can grow back to the natural state. Advise your client to use cuticle oil frequently, massaging it in to hydrate and encourage nail growth. “Depending on how damaged and weak the nails are, they could benefit from a thin layer of soft gel to protect the nails until the damage has grown out. If the damage is severe, keep the nails bare, with a keratin nail treatment. The nails should be protected by gloves when gardening or using cleaning products. GIORGIA CAPPELLA The GelBottle training & education manager – Brighton @bygiorgia_ “Regular maintenance appointments are important to maintain the health of the natural nail as the damage grows out. On a nail that has been over-filed, avoid extensive cuticle work or pushing anything into the softest area of the nail.” Wendy Jayne Dickens of Fresh Face Beauty (@wendy_freshfacebeauty) shares the effects of prolonged over-filing

“I use Lecenté’s Nail & Skin Conditioning Oil, which has antiinflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it perfect for over-filed nails,” Theresa Foddering shares. “It’s infused with jojoba oil, vitamin E and aloe vera to deeply moisturise the nails and skin, accelerating nail growth and working to improve the general condition of nails and skin.” Lecenté Nail & Skin Conditioning Oil £3.99 + VAT www.lecente.com / www.sweetsquared.com / www.ellisons.co.uk

JULIE-ANNE LARIVIÈRE Salon System nail expert & owner of Sketched by J-A Nails – Larkfield, Kent @jal.nailartist “If redness appears on the nail, you have started over-filing. Stop the process and move on. If the nail plate is very red, sore and thin, it’s unlikely any product will be retained by the nail. It’s best to wait two to four months, when the damage has grown out, before you reapply any product. In other cases, where you see bumps or white patches, product can be reapplied with caution. Use a very gentle buffer on those areas, and the damage will grow out in time. Never use harsh abrasives on over-filed nails and do not apply acid primer. Be extremely cautious, especially if you use an E-file.”

HOW TO BANISH LIMITING BELIEFS IN ORDER TO SUCCEED AS A NAIL BOSS

ntrepreneurship isn’t for the fainthearted. It takes a rock-solid mindset and the ability to navigate challenges and obstacles. Many nail bosses struggle to achieve their goals, due to limiting beliefs that prevent them from taking risks and pursuing these targets. These pesky beliefs are often deeply ingrained, and may feel beyond your control. Here, I explore the importance of challenging your limiting beliefs and share strategies that can help you when you’re feeling stuck.

What are limiting beliefs? Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts and assumptions that we hold about ourselves and the world around us. They can be formed through past experiences or handed down from caregivers and societal norms. These beliefs can restrict your potential; not what you want as a business owner! Common limiting beliefs among nail entrepreneurs include: • ‘I am not experienced enough to charge what I’d like.’ • ‘The nail industry is saturated and highly competitive.’ • ‘I’m no good at the business side of things.’ • ‘I struggle with technology and numbers.’

Why are limiting beliefs harmful in business? They can lead to self-doubt, fear of failure and a lack of confidence in your abilities, which can prevent you from taking risks and exploring opportunities. By challenging your limiting beliefs, you’ll be more likely to reach your potential and grow the business you deserve.

How to challenge your limiting beliefs: 1. Identify them Reflect on thoughts and assumptions about yourself and your business. Write down any beliefs that you think may be holding you back. This can help you gain a better understanding of your thought patterns and identify areas to work on.

2. Question your beliefs I like to refer to this as ‘calling myself out on my own BS’. Challenge the validity of your beliefs and consider whether they are based on facts or assumptions. This can help you gain a more objective view and identify where you may be limiting yourself unnecessarily. Write down any hard facts that oppose or challenge your limiting beliefs. 3. Reframe your beliefs Once you have questioned your limiting beliefs, reframe them in a positive and empowering way. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do. For example, instead of saying “I don’t have enough experience,” reframe it to “I am constantly learning and growing.” This can help you shift your mindset and focus on your strengths, rather than limitations. 4. Take action Use your new beliefs to guide your decisions and actions. When you catch yourself thinking of limiting beliefs, question and reframe them, and celebrate your successes along the way. This can help you build confidence and momentum as you work towards your goals. 5. Seek support Talk to other nail bosses or a business coach about strategies for overcoming your limiting beliefs. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and who can offer encouragement and support. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Often, the only things holding you back are your own beliefs. By challenging your own BS, you can unlock your full potential and achieve success as an entrepreneur.

Location: Nottingham Eclectic, inclusive and filled with talented pros, GOOSE’s doors were opened in 2019 by Arabella Wildgoose, a hair & beauty specialist with 18 years’ industry experience. “I wanted to create a salon that clients can ‘belong’ to; where they can express themselves as individuals and be creative with no judgement,” she comments. “We have removed all stereotypes and embrace the weird.” The quirky space serves up a laid-back atmosphere, with photos in mismatched frames set upon olive green walls, and dark wood accents and cosy armchairs exuding a comforting feel in which clients can enjoy a treatment. The ‘one stop beauty spot’ offers hair, lash, brow, facial and tooth gem services, alongside L&P and gel nail enhancements with optional nail art. “During my career, I’ve been able to see what works, what doesn’t work and what’s missing in the industry,” Arabella continues. “I’ve always wanted to create a space in which everyone feels welcome, and spent a number of years curating a Pinterest board for my salon décor. I find inspiration from so many things, so it was hard to pick a theme and stick to it when I was decorating. GOOSE is a mix of retro, vintage, industrial, urban jungle and neon aesthetics.” www.goosebeauty.co.uk

Arabella Beauty and Training Location: Hertfordshire

Previously a clothing shop in the market town of Hitchin, Clare Hunt snapped up the site for her salon after falling in love with its large front window. “I used to work as a window dresser in London, so know how important a visual display is,” she reveals. “People enjoy watching others work, so those looking through the salon window can see every feature, from the wooden mani desks to the plants and neon lights.” Before the birth of her daughter, Clare worked full-time as a college lecturer teaching window dressing. She decided on a career change during her maternity leave, to allow for a flexible working pattern, and achieved a beauty qualification in 2016. Clare works alongside two other nail techs, Becka and Marie, offering builder gel, gel polish and gel extension services with nail art.

Anxiety Advice HEALTHMATTERS

Mental Health Are you or your clients suffering with Awareness Week is anxiety? CHLOE RANDALL shares 15-21 May 2023. ways to adapt your approach to This year’s theme support a sense of calm is anxiety.

Six in 100 people are diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) in England in any given week, according to mental health charity, Mind. Here, Scratch highlights ways that nail and beauty pros can adapt their working space and methods to support both employees and clients who experience anxiety.

THE CLIENT

Nail pros share their top tips for ensuring clients with anxiety feel safe and supported in the nail space…

3

According to the NHS, anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. While everyone will experience anxiety to some extent surrounding various life circumstances, for people with GAD, it is a longterm condition that causes anxious feelings about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event.

1

Set up an online booking system

“An online booking system eliminates the need for clients to call to book appointments – something that can Gemma Plumb be a major cause of anxiety,” comments Gemma Plumb, Lecenté educator. “It also allows clients to browse available appointments in their own time.”

Eliminate the trigger

“When a nail professional has knowledge of a client’s anxiety triggers, they can work to Deborah Doherty adapt and eliminate as many of the trigger points as possible,” says Deborah Doherty of Number 10 Nails, Omagh. “For example, if a client has social anxiety, recommend that they schedule an appointment during a quiet part of the day, so that there are no interruptions during their treatment.”

68 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Define it: Anxiety

4

Set expectations

“Anxiety is the fear of the unknown, so explain the stages of the appointment to the client,” states Lily Edwardes of @thatnail.girl. “I love Lily Edwardes sharing each detail to clients, so they are fully aware of the process and products I am using.” “I find that most of my clients who have anxiety will tell me that because I showcase my nail space, face and voice on social media, they have a sense of familiarity towards me and the salon,” comments Dani Bailey Dani Bailey, owner of Alma Studio Nails, Scratch Stars’ Home Salon of the Year finalist 2023. “It makes it a lot easier for them when they visit for the first time.”

2

The silent treatment

“I offer a silent treatment to my Jo Bennett clients,” comments Jo Bennett, Andover-based nail pro. “They can request it via the ‘notes’ section when booking online, rather than on the day. It means that they can sit in silence, read a book or put their headphones in so that they feel comfortable and at ease.”

5

Make time

“Adding 10 to 15 minutes onto a nail appointment to really talk to a client has Katie Turner such a benefit,” shares Katie Turner, Glitterbels education ambassador & founder of Radiant Nails, Sidmouth. “If you know you have a client with anxiety, book out a small amount of extra time. Spending time with someone and being another point of advice makes such a difference to someone with anxiety. I find if clients with anxiety feel rushed, it can really heighten their feelings.”

HEALTHMATTERS

THE EMPLOYEE Take steps to support your needs and that of employees suffering with anxiety, with words of wisdom from fellow nail pros…

3

1

“Plan your day and be strict with your work times,” states Natalie Kirk of Nail Perfection by Natalie, Derby. Natalie Kirk “Factor in a lunch break and pencil in holiday dates, even if you haven’t booked one, so it gives you time to plan. “In addition, stock decaf and herbal teas in the staff room and encourage healthy eating and meal prep. “This will make you feel better inside and out. Have a bottle of water at your desk to stay hydrated and help you feel energised.”

Rest and recharge

“During the working day, I make sure I have breaks to eat and recharge,” says Lisa Nicol, Scotland-based nail pro. “I find reading Lisa Nicol a book, even if it is just for 10 minutes, can help me to relax, and so can scrolling through Instagram and TikTok to find inspiration for nail designs. I also enjoy practicing nail art or taking part in Scratch’s Creative Challenge every other Wednesday.”

4

2

Communication

Make a plan

Know your boundaries

“Conversation with clients can sometimes be intense,” Frances Humphrey states Frances Humphrey, co-founder of online community, Nail Tech Natter. “Take time to check in with yourself. If you feel overwhelmed or triggered in any way by particular conversations, let your client know or steer the chat towards a lighter topic.”

“Employers that are aware of anxiety in their employees should discuss what would help to minimise any triggers in the work Sara Cady environment. But first, it is important that they are approachable, so that the employee feels comfortable to open up about their concerns,” comments Sara Cady of @glamourphile. “Open lines of communication with zero judgement, as this is important for a healthy work environment.”

5

Contact new clients

“New clients trigger my anxiety,” Holly Hargraves explains Holly Hargraves, Bolton-based nail pro. “Will they like me? What if I run out of things to say? Will they be friendly? To combat this, I like to reach out to clients before their appointment. It settles my anxiety and I imagine it settle theirs, too.”

On the first night of Nail Camp, a party was hosted with ‘The dancefloor is waiting’ as the theme. “The participants were delighted with the venue and the quality of the knowledge provided over the two-day event,” shares Eve. “We hope that future events will gather even more lovers of nail styling, as well as professionals and those who are just starting their nail journey. “We would love Hillfield House Academy to connect people from the industry and show that it is worth sharing knowledge, improving your skills and trying new brands as part of the process of building your career.”

Beauty technology around the globe

High-tech hair Located in Spitalfields Market, London, Amazon’s first beauty salon offers a unique experience based around technology. An augmented reality colour bar allows clients to virtually try on hairstyles and dyes, and entertainment can be enjoyed on Fire tablets at each styling station. After treatments, clients can visit a dedicated creative area to take and share photos of their new looks. Interactive shopping displays with point-and-learn technology allow customers to point at a product to receive information about it, including brand videos and educational content, via a display screen. To order the product, a QR code on the shelf takes them to the item’s page at Amazon.co.uk.

A similar concept has launched in the DIY nail market, with manicure machine, Nailbot by Preemadonna. Magic mirror Previously the subject of fairytales, talking mirrors are a reality in China, thanks to the Tmall Genie Queen by Alibaba. Utilising voice activation technology and artificial intelligence, the mirror registers its user’s makeup routine and forms a skin profile, responding to their vocal concerns and suggesting beauty tips and branded products suited to them. The mirror’s brightness can be increased or dimmed to recreate the effect of natural sunlight or dark environments. The Tmall Genie Queen can respond to requests such as asking for a radio station or news updates, too.

Metaverse modes Haircare brand, TRESemmé, has made waves in Pakistan by becoming the country’s first beauty brand to enter the shared, online, virtual environment that is the metaverse, in November 2022. Partnering with metaverse company, Exarta, the ‘TRESverse’ invites consumers (‘TRESetters’) to choose from pre-designed avatars, suited to their style and hair type, that can enter the brand’s virtual salon and flaunt ‘ their smooth, frizz-free hair. ‘ The TRESemmé metaverse also includes a runway environment, where expression is encouraged through the curation of catwalk hair looks. In the ‘TRESverse’, free product samples can be ordered to users’ physical addresses, and they can interact with other TRESemmé fans in real time.

BEHIND THE GRAM Get to know social media nail stars as they offer an insight into their lives & share their content creation tips – Seattle, USA Kelly Ornstein K+ followers 35 @kellyohstein

My nail journey I have been creating art since I could hold a brush, and studied Jewellery & Metalsmithing at college, forging an obsession with tiny paintings and accessories. I started making metal nails and loved illustrating, although nail artistry took some practice. I also have small hands, which looked a little rough due to my studies, so painting my nails gave my self-esteem a boost.

What makes me happy... The connections, trust and therefore freedom I have with my clients. I have known most of them for over five years, so they trust my visions. Sometimes, my clients pick the theme, colour or finish for their nail style, and sometimes I will choose, as I know each client’s aesthetic and design boundaries. I like to work without a plan, in order to gauge what appeals to the client from their inspiration or feelings. I don’t copy my previous work or that of other nail artists, and most clients won’t look at their nails until they are finished, because they like the surprise. It is worth your time, both as a service provider and for your own enjoyment, to know the people you hold hands with.

Before I created my Instagram profile, I ran ‘Base Coat Top Coat’ on Tumblr, which amassed 80,000 followers. My persistence with nail art led me to work with magazines, companies including Urban Outfitters, and to develop two lines of nail wraps. I’ve also worked at New York Fashion Week, had salon roles and educated, and I still do editorial and video work and collaborations.

My inspirations I gravitate towards pop culture, especially anything millennial-themed or older. I am a nostalgia queen, so like themes that illicit a strong memory. Maximalism is my style; I feel compelled to tell a story with colours, materials and details, including interactive aspects. When looking at a client’s inspiration, I think about what speaks to me, aspects that support the theme, and details that make me laugh or elevate the design. I am playful, so often hide details like colour-changing gel, crystal eyes or textures for my clients to discover.

Social media advice

Consistency with posting, engaging with peers and working the algorithm will increase followers. However, to become popular with my target audience, I aim to appeal to people like me; lovers of fashion, science or pop culture, who shy away from popular trends. I have felt pressure when posting on social media, but I know a post’s engagement is beyond my control; it might be due to the algorithm or certain news dominating the platforms. I remind myself that I created my profile as a portfolio of work, to connect with my peers and feel inspired, so the number of likes I receive is insignificant.

3 fun facts

My favourite animals are sharks and dogs. My partner, Max, and I are painting an undersea-themed mural in the house of a client, who is a diver. I’m private, introverted and quite shy until I get to know my clients.

A day in my life I wake up around 6:30am and engage on social media, edit content, play video games or make art, and walk my dogs. I typically see clients from 10am to 8pm in threehour slots, but some designs can take four or five hours. The lines between work and play are blurry, because art is my life; if my eyes are open, I’m crafting, gaming or working. After work, my partner, Max, and I play video games, watch TV and make art. I paint, illustrate, bead, sew, use papiermâché, sculpt and more. I want to do, create and learn as much as I can in my lifetime.

Easy with

Keysie

Prevent pesky nail breaks caused by opening cans, keyrings & more with Keysie, a handy nail-saving tool that’s ideal for retailing. CHLOE RANDALL takes a peek…

W

hen a client leaves the salon with a fresh mani, you may be crossing your fingers in hope that they remember that their nails are jewels, not tools. However, everyday tasks such as opening boxes and cans, scraping off blu-tac or taking keys off keyrings can wreak havoc on natural nails and enhancements – so the Keysie has launched to save nails from snapping.

Gregor & Sarah

“My fiancé, Sarah, and I moved flats regularly during our time at university, and were putting keys on and off keyrings on a regular basis,” shares Gregor Eadie, co-head of the Keysie product line. “My nails and fingers became sore trying to prise open keyrings, so I thought it would be useful to have a small tool to help me do this.” Gregor put the idea to his father, Brian, an awardwinning product designer and engineer. “In one week, and thanks to my dad’s 3D printing skills, we sketched designs and created a prototype,” Gregor continues. “He is retired, but had set up Eadie Bros & Co Ltd to house hobby projects, and Keysies was a perfect fit.”

What is a Keysie?

The Keysie, which can clip onto a keyring, is a tool that can be used as a trolley token, and to save fingernails from jobs that may prove damaging, such as: • Opening cans • Opening parcels • Lifting picture frame flaps • Finding the end of a roll of tape • Opening keyrings • Peeling off stickers • Piercing open plastic film on products/packaging

Further research and development saw the Keysie evolve to include space for branding, so salons and techs can add their logo onto the product and use personally or retail to clients. When your client is at the till post-appointment, there’s never a better time to offer them the handy, low-cost tool that can ‘save’ their perfect nail finish. Brian & Gregor Eadie

Personalisation

Pricing pointers for mobile nail services

obile pros: you offer a premium service, so charge for it! Gone are the days when manicures were add-on services in hairdressing salons – the nail industry is big business now. Pros spend thousands of pounds on training and products, and years practicing, upskilling and learning. What’s more, nail treatments offer mental health benefits for clients.

Step 3 Decide how much you are going to pay yourself per hour. You are a professional with qualifications and a valuable skillset, so charge your worth. Don’t just charge for the time it takes you to perform a manicure; include the time it takes to travel to clients. That time is all part of the service and convenience you are offering and during it, you cannot do anything else.

Techs often look to other techs to price their services, and mobile pros frequently charge less because they ‘don’t have overheads’. But here’s the important thing: you are providing convenience to your client and saving them the time and cost of travelling to their nail appointment.

Put a spreadsheet together, or invest in a pricing template or calculator. Fellow Scratch columnist, Maddi Cook, has an acclaimed pricing calculator, as does Salonology, and its calculator can be accessed by members of its Gold Club business coaching group. Even though I kept on top of my costs with a spreadsheet, using a pricing calculator was an eye opener, as it ascertained how much to charge to make a profit in quiet weeks. Every business is different, so you must complete calculations relevant to your own business.

Do you really know how much it costs you to run your business and perform a nail service? You need to do your sums, because it will likely cost more than you think. You must cover all your outgoings and make sure you are paying yourself once these costs are covered.

Pricing considerations

Step 1 Roughly work out product costs for each nail treatment you offer, and add on the price of the percentage of consumables you use in a service, such as lint-free wipes, foil, acetone and nail files. It’s a good idea to estimate a higher amount, to cover any spills or excess use. If you offer nail art, you’ll need to charge extra for this, as this uses additional product which can be more expensive, and consider charging in time frames. The same applies to add-ons, such as luxurious scrubs. Step 2 Add kit and equipment costs, working out how long these items will last before you need to replace them. You also need to include your fixed costs: the costs you incur to run your business, regardless of how many clients you have. These may include website fees, insurance, your booking system and advertising. Most importantly, include travel costs.

82 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

If you’re thinking, ‘I can’t charge that much in my area’, stop! Your product suppliers don’t charge you less because of where you live, do they? It will cost the same amount to run your business wherever you are in the country, so don’t base your pricing on the local rate. Having the confidence to charge your worth can be tough, but you will gain clients that want to pay more to receive a better quality of service, so consider the value you can offer them and use that as a selling point. I’ll let you into a secret: it has taken me a while to reach the prices I currently charge, and I still believe they should be higher. I know how difficult it can be to charge your worth, but if we all do it together, it will be easier! www.thenailclub.uk /thenailclublondon Until next month,

Clare

PODCAST POINTERS

Is podcasting something you’d like to explore? Not only is it a brilliant way to share your knowledge, experience and build a nail community, but it can also be a lucrative side hustle if you are dedicated to the venture, with successful podcasters making an average profit of £900 per month: the equivalent of £11,448 a year. This income is typically generated through adverts, sponsorships and subscription or membership models. To receive interest from others, it’s important to be organised and in the know – so check out top tips for starting a podcast below.

Be prepared Sue Davies shares five points to note before starting a podcast...

1

Podcasting is a big commitment, and although you can create and run a podcast yourself, you may need support writing, editing and publishing episodes, which can be expensive. The technology isn’t particularly complicated, but it takes a while to master. I signed up to a course with a podcast coach to improve my skills, which was well worth the investment, and podcast communities can help answer questions.

2

It pays to buy equipment from a reputable brand. I learned this the hard way and have replaced the £35 microphone I started with for one costing around £120. I also use over-the-head headphones – not earbuds.

3 4 5

You need a quiet and relatively small space in which to record, for optimum sound quality. For each hour of recording, you need to allow two to four hours for editing, prep and content writing.

You won’t earn directly from a podcast unless you can include sponsors or advertisers in your show, and you won’t profit unless you have a high number of listeners. You can earn indirectly through the audience purchasing your other services.

Keys to success

Winnie Huang tells Scratch that being engaging, through content that keeps your audience hooked, is crucial for a successful podcast. “To keep listeners engaged, ask exciting questions and have guests who are the experts of your podcast’s subject matter,” she shares. For Chantelle Vermont, consistency is key. “If you say you are going to release an episode each week, commit to it. Find a schedule that suits you, so you know you can stick to it long-term and create a loyal audience that looks forward to your episodes,” she explains.

What’s popular Wiredclip.com has released a report on current podcast trends, based on expert insights from founder, Martin Chaplin. It finds that short-form programmes, which are typically under 20-minutes in length, are becoming a popular podcast choice for audiences, as are shows focused on diverse perspectives and niche content. With over two million podcasts available, focusing on niche topics and industries, such as the nail sector, is helping podcasters to stand out. The report also offers some advice for budding creators. It encourages collaboration, through networking with industry peers and in online communities, to cross-promote content. It stresses the important of CPD, recommending that podcasters stay up-to-date on podcast news, including technologies and trends. 86 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Starting out

So you’re fully committed to launching a podcast, but what are the first steps? Resource hub for podcast creators, Wiredclip.com, shares seven steps to follow:

1

Decide on your podcast focus. What type of podcast do you want to create? A news show, talk show, educational podcast or entertainment series? Clearly identify your podcast’s theme and target audience.

2

Choose a name. Pick something memorable, related to your podcast topic, that’s easy to spell and easy to say. Check that it hasn’t already been taken.

3

Source your equipment. You will need a microphone, headphones and recording software. You could even record episodes on your phone!

4 5 6

Record and edit your podcast. Examples of podcast editing software include Audacity, GarageBand and Hindenburg. Choose a podcast hosting platform. This is where you will upload your episodes. Popular options are Anchor and Buzzsprout.

Create enticing artwork and descriptions. To attract listeners, create imagery for your podcast cover and write a short, informative description of your podcast.

7

Launch your podcast. It can be beneficial to launch with multiple episodes for listeners to ‘binge’. Remember to promote your podcast on social media, your website and/or through paid ads to make it more discoverable. If you’ve got a great podcast idea or plan, but you’re feeling nervous, Faye Dennis and Danae Gooch advise that you should focus on enjoying the experience and not put too much pressure on yourself. “When we started The Beauty Download, we told ourselves that if we could just help one person with our advice, we would be happy,” they say. “Since then, we have grown a wonderful community, because we all have shared experiences.” Chantelle Vermont agrees and adds: “Be yourself and show your personality. The wonderful thing about podcasting is that people get a feel for you as a person. You are the only ‘you’ there is, so own it!”

Marketing

“Make the most of social media, and ask for your listeners to do the same by sharing your podcast and mentioning it to their nail tech friends,” says Chantelle Vermont. “Creating catchy soundbites will also help.” Winnie Huang agrees, adding that asking guests to share your podcast, and on as many social media platforms as possible, is also important to maximise its reach.

INDUSTRYCOMPETITION

THE RESULTS The Nailympia 2023 competition circuit kicked off in Anaheim & Germany, with amazing displays of skill & creativity. Discover who took home the top trophies & titles…

I

n unprecedented circumstances for Nailympia, its first two competitions for 2023 overlapped in dates, but not in time. The magic of time zones meant that as the floor in Germany closed in early April, the arena in Anaheim, USA opened for nail business. Unable to be in two places at once, Nailympia’s global director, Alex Fox, joined the organising team in Germany; Stefanie Lo Re and Ivonne Voigt, leaving operations of the Anaheim event in the safe hands of nail educator & Nailpro Asia organiser, Hemi Park. “It’s so exciting to have two Nailympias running side by side on opposite sides of the world,” smiles Alex Fox. “However, it’s unfortunate that when this is the case, I can’t be at both events. Fortunately, over the years I’ve formed a strong relationship with Hemi, and I knew that Nailympia was safe under her watchful eye alongside seasoned head judge, Alisha Rimando. “The second edition of Nailympia Germany was more than twice the size of 2022’s event; a truly positive sign for the nail industry and competition sector. Anaheim was a more intimate event that showcased talent and skill on a smaller scale. “Anaheim was the beginning of four USA locations for 2023; next up is Orlando, before a third event in San Antonio, Texas and finally in Columbus, Ohio in October,” Alex continues. “This is an exciting year for competing across the USA, and I’m excited to run Nailympia Orlando in early June, where I’m expecting the best turn out on the arena to date.”

Shannon McCown & Anastasia Totty

“Running Nailympia at Premiere Anaheim was such a blessing; it was an intimate yet high energy event. I’ve always loved the hype and intensity of the competition arena, but this time, I was able to cheer everyone on, which is the best part of being an organiser. “I worked with a wealth of awe-inspiring judges and Nailympia Anaheim was a friendly experience for all. It was the perfect place for nail pros to say ‘Hi’ and ask questions. I met up with many industry friends and the support in the arena was enormous.” Hemi Park, Nailympia Anaheim host 88 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

It was exciting that the arena attracted the interest of international industry players who were at Beauty Düsseldorf seeking new ways to grow and improve their respective nail industries. “The blend of both floor and booth judges was in itself a special recipe for success and many new relationships were forged. I’m so excited for the future of Nailympia Germany and we were happy to welcome Alex Fox to the arena to present alongside organisers and judges.” “This was a very uplifting event, hosted during very challenging times for the global industry and beyond,” shares Alex. “There was superb camaraderie across the floor and intense, skillful nail work undertaken. It was a truly motivating experience to bring like-minded people together in the name of nails. “During the three-day event, social media posts, generated by the spectators, competitors, judges and the Nailympia team, were shown around the world, attracting interest from a global audience. SOAP QUEEN STYLE HELLO KIM

Kim Kardashian jumped on the Hello Kitty nail trend, courtesy of her go-to nail tech, Kim Truong, stating on Instagram that the nails are ‘still the cutest.’

Mobile-based business, Embellish Beauty, tended to the talons of Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald in the much-loved soap. For Beverley’s birthday nail look, she served up a deep purple overlay.

THE ROYAL RED

TV presenter, Emma Willis, visited CACI’s head office for a ‘me day,’ following her fundraising challenge to reach the summit of Cairn Gorm Mountain for Comic Relief. She enjoyed CACI’s Micro-Touch Facial; a 45-minute treatment that focuses on muscle toning and lifting to achieve firmer and more defined facial contours. A combination of deep tissue massage and lymphatic drainage techniques were used to release facial tension and reduce puffiness, leaving skin glowing and radiant. “We have received glowing reviews from our clients who love the hands-on approach and results of the Micro-Touch Facial,” comments award-winning facialist, Lisa Franklin. “The facial has attracted some highprofile celebrities and press. It has already become one of our most popular treatments within the clinic.”

The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, turned heads when she walked out of church with the Royal family on Easter Sunday sporting a red nail shade. Traditionally, the Royals have been known to stick to muted nail tones, such as Essie’s Ballet Slippers, so the shade choice was a break from the norm. In a poll on Scratch’s Instagram profile, 95% of respondents voted that members of the Royal family should mix up their nail looks, while 5% believe they should stick to a soft pink hue.
