FSB wants UK government to help small firms go green

By Team Scratch Sustainable Beauty Coalition calls for salons to commit to reducing emissions The Sustainable Beauty Coalition (SBC), formed by the British Beauty Council in July 2021, has written an open letter calling for hair and beauty salons to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. The SBC exists to develop a clear strategy, roadmap and initiatives to accelerate the sustainability efforts of the industry. The letter asks for salons to sign up to the SME Climate Hub, an online resource that helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to measure their emissions, while serving up ways to directly reduce their daily energy and waste usage. It opens up the doors for SMEs, (businesses of up to 250 employees), to join the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign, which brings together international governments and figures to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. “We know that our industry uses a lot of water, heat, electricity... and all of us are trying to do our bit,” comment representatives from the SBC. “However, we could be in danger of facing water shortages or tax hikes on industries like ours that have a higher carbon output, so let’s do something now to change this.” The letter stresses the importance of taking direct action so that the beauty industry can be ahead of changes in government and can shape how the climate crisis is tackled. www.smeclimatehub.org

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has issued a Call to Action to help small firms go green, after a study it issued found that while 36% of small businesses have a plan to combat climate change, only 30% of those have made changes to their businesses as a result. The FSB’s Accelerating Progress Report Report, issued to coincide with the 2021 COP26 conference, revealed that 67% of small firms have taken steps to reduce their energy usage, while 64% have increased recycling. However, the majority of small businesses don’t know how to measure the carbon emissions their business produces, and 27% say that it will be extremely difficult to transition to a net zero economy. Small businesses that were spoken to for the study commented that grants, low interest loans and business rates discounts would encourage them to improve their energy efficiency. The Accelerating Progress Report recommends that the UK government should issue £5,000 in vouchers for businesses to spend on qualifying environmental products and services under a Help To Green initiative. It also notes that local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland should incorporate small business waste collection services into their domestic collection services. www.fsb.org.uk

Anybody entering a CQC registered care home in England for work or volunteering purposes must now be vaccinated against Covid-19 – a policy that applies to all visiting workers, including hairdressers and beauty professionals. Few exemptions apply, and the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) is working closely with the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to ensure that all hair and beauty industry professionals across England are aware of the regulations.

Staffordshire nail technician scoops PHAB Service Stars accolade Cheryl Walker, a nail technician from Dudley, Staffordshire, has been awarded a PHAB Service Star; a measure of service and performance excellence in the hair and beauty sector. The owner of Cheryl’s Nail Design Ltd had her practice assessed rigorously during the process, with the PHAB Service Stars organisation measuring criteria including hygiene and environmental practice, repeat custom, testimonials and retail sales. “Being equipped with a PHAB Service Star is a great way to evidence professionalism,” comments Nergish Wadia-Austin, founder of PHAB Service Stars. “It is very helpful to consumers when choosing a new hair and beauty professional and a great aid to business owners recruiting new staff or considering promotions.” Cheryl’s previous accolades include Scratch Stars Gel Tech of the Year 2016 and Nail Tech of the Year at the English Hair & Beauty Awards 2017. The talented nail professional was presented with her PHAB Service Star by one of her clients of 24 years, who travels for around an hour every fortnight for a nail service by Cheryl. “I couldn’t have asked anyone else to present this certificate to me,” exclaims Cheryl. “I am so proud to hold a PHAB Service Star.” To apply for a PHAB Service Star, visit www.phabservicestars.com

Nail NATION ‘Full market recovery’ predicted for the beauty sector following Covid-19 challenges A report from Kline Group has revealed that the professional beauty industry has been making bold moves towards digitalisation, largely owing to the effects of the pandemic. Both the professional nail and haircare markets have seen steep declines in sales due to coronavirus lockdowns, with skincare the only market to experience growth. In nailcare, gels have become the leading category in the market. With consumers prioritising self-care during lockdown, traditional nail polishes gained popularity and some nail brands offered at-home care kits. The report also states that social activism and conversations around inclusion affected the professional nailcare market, with brands increasing their shade ranges. It expects the professional beauty market to rebound, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 6% by 2025. Salons are expected to return to normal activity levels. Kline also concludes that digital initiatives will continue to dominate the industry, clean beauty will stay as a popular trend with consumers, and marketers will increase their presence in brick-and-mortar retailers. www.klinegroup.com

Autumn Budget 2021: Key points to note Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, delivered his Budget statement at the end of October, unveiling the economic recovery of the country post Covid-19. Here are key points to note for beauty professionals: • The National Living Wage will rise by 6.6% from the current living wage of £8.91 to £9.50 per hour from 1 April. • People aged 21 to 22 will see an increase to £9.18 an hour from £8.36 and apprentices, who must be aged 16 or over and not in full-time education, will receive a rise to £4.81 from £4.30 an hour. • The government has confirmed a £3bn initiative to help young people across the UK, including funding for colleges, to provide additional classroom hours for 100,000 16 to 19-year olds taking the vocational T-Levels, as well as cash to create 24,000 new apprenticeships. • Apprenticeship funding will increase to £2.7 billion in 2024-25, and over £900 million for each year across the country on work coaches, to ensure Universal Credit claimants receive the best support to find employment. The government is also permanently cutting the Universal Credit taper rate by 8% from 63p to 55p, for more money in pockets. • For mobile techs and those that travel to/from a salon or workspace, Sunak revealed he is scrapping the planned rise in fuel duty. • There will be an increase of the rates of Income Tax applicable to dividend income. Currently the ordinary rate, upper rate and additional rate are 7.5%, 32.5% and 38.1% respectively. This measure will increase each rate by 1.25% to 8.75%, 33.75% and 39.35% from April 2022. • Funding has also been confirmed for the Restart scheme in England and Wales, to continue providing intensive and tailored support to longterm unemployed people to help them find work. www.gov.uk 12 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

LEGOLOGY JOINS TWO ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY INITIATIVES TO STEP UP SUSTAINABILITY GAME Leg care brand, Legology, has joined two sustainability initiatives; rePurpose Global and World Land Trust, in a bid to improve its sustainability as a brand. Founded by Kate Shapland, Legology focuses on providing solutions to common leg problems using the Kate Shapland lymphology complex. The brand’s product boxes are certified by the World Land Trust (WLT), the UK charity that protects significant and threatened habitats. Legology’s packaging is 100% recyclable and the WLT certification means that the card used is sourced from responsible forests and carbon balanced. rePurpose Global aims to make the world plastic neutral by working with brands to reduce their plastic impact. As part of this initiative, Legology is funding the female-led Project Anant Pranay in India to tackle the waste affecting the eco-systems in its jungles. “I’m so proud that Legology has been able to take big steps to greater sustainability this year,” comments Kate Shapland. “By joining forces with rePurpose Global in its fight against plastic pollution, the brand has become plastic neutral. “In bringing packaging production back to the UK, we’ve been able to offset our residual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the maintenance of carbon-rich tropical wildlife habitats with World Land Trust.” www.legology.co.uk/sustainability

Scratch looks back at key launches & initiatives across the nail sector over the past 12 months…

Government recognises hair & beauty industries with dedicated ‘personal care’ team

Following a relentless campaign by the British Beauty Council, UK Spa Association, BABTAC and the NHBF, the UK government created a sector specific team to support the hair and beauty industries, which was announced in January. These organisations worked closely with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to overcome the challenges of 2020 and highlighted the size and scope of the personal care sector as a major UK force. The introduction of the ‘personal care’ team marked a milestone for UK hair, beauty and wellness, with positive implications including heightened awareness and understanding of the innovative and economically valuable sector.

OLYMPIA BEAUTY RETURNS As UK trade exhibitions were postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic, Olympia Beauty adapted its format to online in the spring. It then set the benchmark for trade beauty shows to return by being the first to take place since the start of the pandemic – held at Olympia, London in October. The event featured product offers from a variety of nail and beauty brands, welcomed the return of competitors for The Lash Games and National Massage Championships and saw the Salon & Spa Owners’ Club hosted by Hollie and Ryan Power of Salonology. What’s more, the Scratch team showcased the magazine, welcomed subscriptions and made a live announcement of this year’s winners for The Great Scratch Shoot Out at the Scratch stand. www.olympiabeauty.co.uk

Sector supported via The Beautyco Club Beauty entrepreneur, Jayd Linney, launched The Beautyco Club at the beginning of the year to remove the fear of ‘reaching out’ to other businesses and competitors, and to help people come together to offer advice, motivation and guidance. After 10 years’ experience running multiple successful businesses in the industry, Jayd has used this knowledge to offer free business advice, as a well as a private business mentoring service for club members looking to make an instant and targeted impact via their business. www.thebeautycoclub.co.uk 22 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Education initiative launches

Following two years of planning, Marian Newman BEM and Kevin Nicholls launched Nail Knowledge; a fact-based online learning initiative. Nail Knowledge provides the information and understanding essential for the nail professional via three masterclasses. Upon completing the units and passing the final exam, the nail professional will receive the Nail Knowledge Essential Nail Professional Diploma. www.nailknowledge.org

#CUTITOUT CAMPAIGN HELPS PROS SPOT SIGNS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE IN CLIENTS

A campaign, #CutItOut, was launched to help hair, nail and beauty professionals spot the signs that a client may be experiencing domestic abuse. As well as recognising the signs, the aim of the campaign is to teach professionals how and where to direct clients to get help. #CutItOut originated in Norwich, Norfolk, following a tragic murder. Beauty professionals who wish to learn more can email CutItOut@northants.pnn.police.uk

Sustainable Beauty Coalition helps industry clean up its act The Sustainable Beauty Coalition was launched in July in response to an independent sustainability report commissioned by the British Beauty Council, which analyses the beauty sector and the consumers it serves. The coalition is made up of industry experts and industry body representatives who report to the British Beauty Council’s executive board, with a purpose to develop a clear strategy and roadmap to accelerate sustainability in the industry. www.britishbeautycouncil.com/sustainable-beauty-coalition

Free mental health training helps beauty pros spot client struggles

In March, barber Tom Chapman launched Hair & Beauty Talk; free mental health training to help hair and beauty professionals recognise signs of struggle amongst clients. The four-hour training, available on demand, helps hair and beauty pros ask questions that give those in need the opportunity to talk in a safe environment. It also gives skills to listen with empathy and without judgement – as well as the information to help those in need find the correct help. The training is not to diagnose, advise or prescribe to those suffering, but to offer a safe, nonjudgemental environment that is accessible to all.

Restart grants offered to businesses affected by closures

During the spring budget announcement, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced a £5bn budget for Restart Grants to help businesses reopen after lockdown. Hospitality and leisure businesses, including personal care, were eligible to receive grants of up to £18,000.

Nailympia unveils online event

While Nailympia London, the flagship event of Nailympia Competitions, was postponed for 2020 and 2021, it offered international competitors the option to compete online with the launch of Nailympia Online last spring, and a second edition this autumn. The competitions invited nail technicians from all over the world to compete across three divisions from the comfort of their own salons. For more info, visit www.nailympia.com

The Federation of Nail Professionals (FNP), which serves to be a voice for the UK nail industry, opened membership options with a variety of benefits. UK nail pros & business recognised at the Scratch Stars Awards

After a year of anticipation, the 2020 finalists for the Scratch Stars Awards were finally able to party and celebrate their success at the awards event at Proud, Embankment in July. With over 18 categories and performances by Blue star, Duncan James, professionals rose to the occasion, dressed up and showed off their best dance moves for the first industry event since the start of the pandemic. It was a night to remember and we can’t wait to do it all again in 2022 for our 10th anniversary of the Scratch Stars Awards. See you there!

BEAUTY BACKED SUPPORT SCHEME SECURES TRUST STATUS

The Beauty Backed initiative, launched in August 2020 by skincare expert, Caroline Hirons to raise funds for and support the beauty sector, secured Trust status in April this year. The Trust aims to assist those that work in the beauty industry and its Trustees are Caroline Hirons, Alexandra Forbes, Dija Ayodele, BABTAC’s Lesley Blair and Lisa Potter Dixon. In October, the Beauty Backed Trust launched its first grant programme to continue to support the industry following the Covid-19 pandemic. Two grants are available for those that need extra support and guidance while they get back on their feet; a Start-up Grant and Support Grant. Find out more at www.beautybacked.com

CEW introduces Accelerate Programme to mentor & support the growth of British beauty brands

In May, Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) UK partnered with Mintel and leading beauty businesses to advance the development and growth of independent British beauty and wellbeing brands. Applications for CEW Accelerate were open until the end of June and after being filtered through a panel of experts, five businesses were awarded access to a 12-week programme. The programme offered insights and connections to help develop the brands and fuel accelerated growth in the UK and beyond. www.cewuk.co.uk SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 23

“We started developing the platform four years ago,” comment Samuel and Samantha Sweet, co-founders of Sweet Squared. “However, it was the pandemic that demonstrated a need for the industry to deliver tools for clear video and bi-directional streaming.

“It was only then that we felt the technology had matured to a point that there was a clear direction for us to evolve our education. “Once we had that ‘ah-ha!’ moment, the team then developed the content and platform to deliver it to the industry and our customers.” “The launch of Academy 2 means our education programme is now accessible to every professional at every level and can slot into their daily lives regardless of their schedule,” comments Carly Howarth, education manager at Sweet Squared. “A mix of online and in-classroom education means that students will walk away feeling confident, with all the skills they need to make their business a success. It is more than just a one-way interaction of reading theory or watching a video; theory is critical and can now be delivered largely outside of the classroom, but inperson practical skill development is still so important. Our hands-on sessions are guided across the UK and Ireland by specialist education mentors trained in coaching and helping others. “The live sessions we provide are designed to keep the education wheels going long after courses have been completed. Leveraging our Academy 2 technology allows us to connect professionals with leaders in their fields – leaders discussing important topics that don’t always slot into a course.” Samuel & Samantha Sweet

THE FORCE

OF THE FEDS The FNP’s director of education, DONNA CLAYTON, shares the importance of continuing professional development & how to measure its success CPD – THE CORE OF THE INDUSTRY

C

PD (continuing professional development) means that you are continuing to evolve your education and develop your skills. CPD can involve learning new techniques, expanding your existing knowledge and being prepared for any business or industry changes.

CPD is vital life-blood to the industry and should not be seen just as a box-ticking exercise. Updating your anatomical learning is just one example. The information we have now from our industry experts and scientific friends is phenomenal, and what was once labelled as cuticle by many is the proximal nail fold. How many of us were part of this original teaching and lopped off living tissue during a manicure service?

Showing a better understanding of what lies beneath “When allows you to make better, more informed decisions embarking on when it comes to your service and your clients’ care, which is ultimately the main aim. training, look at the the early days of this pandemic, wider perspective Throughout it became apparent that as an industry, we and build your had not placed enough emphasis on our basic business learning, health & safety and skills in all areas, occupational health. This is an important form of CPD, while it may not spring to mind at first. not just the practical-based This is one of the key touchstones The FNP will While we do not currently have a licence requirement for nail professionals and technicians continue to work on both in partnership with its learning.” It is common practice in many industries to complete a specified number of hours of CPD per year which equates to points and usually, one hour equals one point. CPD may be required to remain a member of an industry organisation, for example, and failing to complete required CPD hours can revoke membership status. In some cases, a lack of CPD can cause an individual to lose a licence to practice or to continue working. This is part of the code of practice within the industry or organisation.

in the UK, the importance of keeping up with industry developments cannot be overstated. This ensures that you maintain your existing knowledge and improve it and keep upto-date with the latest technologies, legislations, scientific finds and industry trends, which will help ensure success in any sector or niche.

How does this affect the nail industry & your business or your job role? New research and techniques come to light regularly and it’s important to receive this information from reliable sources; not hearsay or a random forum. In the long term, this research and introduction to a new skill can provide better efficacy and safety in services. 32 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

members and the wider community. We believe that you should be maintaining and developing both your craft and your knowledge. The FNP will not only be hosting a series of events over the calendar year that will assist in the collation of CPD points but in these key developmental areas. Each member of The FNP is asked to collate ‘FED points’ each year as part of their membership to maintain their CPD. Our educator members, in addition, are asked to develop their ‘teaching’ skills further through CPD.

What constitutes as CPD? Your first thought is often a course; either regulated, accredited, workshops and masterclasses. These are great ways to collect CPD points and provide an effective after-benefit that can be implemented, such as better product control.

SCRATCHCOLUMNIST There is, however, a plethora of other resources that contribute to your personal development such as seminars, summits and guest speaker talks (whether in person or virtually), attending a trade show to see the latest developments, reading trade publications, reading books on product chemistry, anatomical structure, or business strategies. For educators, add to your teaching qualifications by working on the next appropriate level. Attend education-related seminars and speaker events, shadow an industry peer – or learn how to switch to a blended learning model. This list is by no means exhaustive, but food for thought to provide you with some inspiration. What we lack is the implementation of our learning or newly acquired skill, or its usability within the salon environment.

How to implement, utilise & measure the success of your CPD investment Firstly, to help guide you away from emotional purchases, consider these points before buying another nail art course: • What’s the investment and potential return on investment? • Is there an ongoing cost past the initial outlay? • What is the potential profit margin? • Does this come from a place of need? Are clients demonstrating a need for this? • Will this help you to provide a better or full solution for your clientele? • Will this allow you to provide a full transformation for your clientele? • Can you identify which clients this will be better suited to? • If this is treatment-centric, can you fit the pre- and post-work into your schedule and drop a promo window into your current marketing plan? • How will this make your life better? • Will this systemise your business or operations?

Overall, what are the main aims & outcomes from completing the activity? Next, you need to put into action what you have learned. This is crucial and often missed, particularly when it’s not a physical skillbased course. An extreme sculpting or nail art course may not directly play out into actual client services but in fact give you greater product control, so it’s important to identify this aspect. If you have read a great piece on product developments, write a blog post, email, or social media post to your peers or clientele giving a brief overview of what you have learned and show others what insights you have taken on board.

NOW LIVE! The FNP is pleased to announce that its latest phase of website development is live. It’s taken some heavy development work to push through the release of this phase alongside some serious extra hours worked by our board members, who work voluntarily. We particularly praise founding board member, Alexandra Cassells, for the extraordinary amount of work that has gone into this phase of development.

WHAT’S NEW? Members can access the main dashboard, which means that personal account details can be updated as they change, a profile picture and qualifications can be added to each profile as well as services and treatments offered and CPD courses.

Lastly, look at the measurables. What will determine the effectiveness of the implementation? Will it be reduced service times, increased profit margins, clicks to blog posts or a response to an advertisement? How will you know when you have had a return on investment? The return isn’t always monetary; it may well be time or confidence. Where possible, always try to see your CPD through to this stage before enrolling on another course.

Members can now add any relevant CPD to build their FED points and meet their points goal. When logging the points, it is important to address how and when what has been learnt will be implemented and identify the need for any further development.

To summarise, when embarking on training, look at the wider perspective and build your skills in all areas, not just the practicalbased learning. Look for the deeper learning, implementation and measures of success. Where possible, plan your yearly CPD budget and needs, and research the providers well.

Each activity is allocated a specified number of FED points. For example, attendance at a trade show in its entirety equates to one point, whereas a four-hour course equates to four points. We’d like to thank our members for their continued support and patience in awaiting this key aspect of the build and as we await the next phase. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the Seminar Social event on 5 December.

CPD not only supports us as individuals in our businesses and job roles, but supports the industry by raising the overall level of education and knowledge.

Before the pandemic hit, one in five people in the UK were living in poverty – and this number is only expected to rise. But if you own or work in a salon, there is a way you can help; by becoming a ‘Beauty Banker’. Beauty Banks is a non-profit organisation that distributes unused hygiene essentials, toiletries and personal care items to charities throughout Britain, which are then given to those in poverty. It was founded in 2018 by journalist and The Guardian beauty columnist, Sali Hughes, and beauty PR, Jo Jones. After being inundated with donations, the pair drafted in the support of beauty salons to become dedicated ‘Beauty Bankers’ or donation points.

After working in the beauty industry for 26 years, Jennifer Comiskey, owner of Dundee salon and spa The Sunflower Room, wanted to do more. On hearing about the work of Beauty Banks, Jennifer felt she had to help those in desperate need in her home city and was inspired to make The Sunflower Room a Beauty Banker three years ago. In addition to Beauty Banks helping salons connect with charities in their area, Jennifer contacted local schools, refuges and homeless centres that she thought would benefit and that could advise on specific items needed by the community. “A lack of basic hygiene products and toiletries is currently a huge concern for charities that provide support to people in crisis and being clean is a basic human right,” Jennifer comments. “Beauty brings confidence and self-worth and being clean is crucial for our dignity, self-confidence and mental health. “Families shouldn’t have to make a choice between feeding their family and buying hygiene and sanitary products.” Responses to The Sunflower Room’s Beauty Bank from the salon community and wider Dundee public have been overwhelmingly positive, Jennifer tells Scratch. To encourage

Jennifer Comiskey

involvement, the salon owner sent out an email inviting her client database to find out more about the Beauty Bank and donate items, alongside posting about the initiative on The Sunflower Room’s social media platforms and website. “Suddenly, people turned up at the salon with donations – some clearing out their cupboards of unused products, and others picking up an extra bar of soap on their weekly shop and dropping it in when coming in for their appointment,” she says. Even with Covid-19 lockdowns closing the salon, the community has stayed supportive. “It was disappointing not to receive as many donations around that time, but our salon community has more than made up for it since,” explains Jennifer.

“Families shouldn’t have to make a choice between feeding their family and buying hygiene and sanitary products.” 36 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

INDUSTRYINITIATIVE Crystal Palace salon, La Belle Jolie, is another registered Beauty Banker. Owner, Renée Thornley, feels it is important for individuals to consider their impact, so she has reduced the environmental impact of her salon and donates to Trussell Trust food banks. “It had never occurred to me that women were choosing between buying food and Renée Thornley menstrual hygiene products, and I just found the thought unbearable,” Renée reveals. “I tried to find out if I could donate personal care items to the food bank and discovered Beauty Banks,” she comments. “The drop-off hours at food banks are not always convenient for people so having a local business that can accept donations during the evenings makes everything so much easier,” adds Renée. “It is such a vital service which is so simple for salons to provide; not everyone realises that food banks accept personal hygiene items.”

How YOU can donate • Beauty Banks has donation bins in over 100 Superdrug stores, including in every major UK city. Each participating store is partnered with a local charity that receives the donated products. There is a map to find your nearest Superdrug Beauty Spot on the Beauty Banks website. • The Hygiene Bank, a charity that gives hygiene, personal care and household cleaning products to those who need them in the UK, has launched its Christmas campaign, #ItsInTheBag. It asks people to fill a bag with unused toiletries, beauty, household and hygiene essentials personalised to a male, female, unisex, family, child or baby, and take it to a drop-off point. To find projects that are participating, check the map at www.thehygienebank.com.

Both Renée and The Sunflower Room’s Jennifer explain that it’s an uncomplicated process for a salon to become a Beauty Banker or Public Beauty Spot and to work with charities. “You just need to make sure you put boxes on display in your reception area with the Beauty Banks signage on, as well as posters in the window,” says Jennifer. “There’s no set schedule regarding when you need to drop items off either. I drop items to the charities or they collect them from the salon – sometimes once a week, so it’s a collaborative relationship.”

Salons can sign up to be a Beauty Banker by accessing the Public Bankers’ Starter Kit via www.beautybanks.org.uk.

She says that even the smallest donation will make a meaningful impact to someone and that clients naturally want to help, as most have unwanted toiletries or gift sets lying around the house or are willing to buy an extra item in their food shop.

Step 3 Using the LE Stripy Brush, work Missing You Madly Color Gel into the bristles. Check you don’t have any excess on Light Elegance Color Gel in Missing You Madly £18.95 + VAT the tip of the brush so you can get an even, straight line. www.sweetsquared.com Start your line at around one third of the nail in so it is off-centre, and run the brush parallel to the nail, starting at the cuticle to create a straight line. Flash cure for 10 seconds and then repeat this step horizontally, one third of the way up the nail, and then two thirds of the way up the nail. Be sure to reach the sidewalls, so there are no gaps. Cure for 30 seconds. Step 4 Wipe the Stripy Brush with a lint-free wipe to clean the brush. Then work LE Just White ButterCream into the bristles. Apply a thin line on either side of the vertical line, flash cure and then apply one thin line under the horizontal lines to create a tartan effect. Cure for 30 seconds. INDUSTRYINITIATIVE

RECONSTRUCTING MASCULINITY

e m i t a t a one nail Scratch chats to London-based nail artist, JESS YOUNG, about Boys In Polish, an initiative that serves to destigmatise male nail art & create an inviting salon space for men

Why did you launch Boys In Polish? JY: I started the project during my art foundation year in 2017, which I call ‘my year of creative awakening’, and I met a lot of interesting people, including men who casually wore nail polish. I thought, ‘nail polish is for everyone, why does it need to be gendered?’ I then wanted to explore this idea before anyone else, and so I did! At the time, I wanted to take my passion for nail art to a new height, and I feel blessed to have experienced such an epiphany. Boys In Polish started as a visual concept and a fun summer project, but the reception was so positive and encouraging that I decided to keep it as an ongoing series, and then eventually give it its own platform.

Why is the Boys In Polish initiative so important? JY: It provides a safe space for men to talk about their issues, struggles and unpack toxic masculinity. People need to practice self-care and need creative outlets.

Anyone can have their nails painted. I hope Boys In Polish can help to dissolve gendered behaviours and expectations, allow people to shine and be their true self. What I want people to know is that this platform is so much more than nail art.

What benefits have you witnessed? JY: It is wonderful to see the introspective journey of men after having their nails painted, and to witness them put a middle finger up to patriarchy. Four years later, I am seeing more men on the tube wearing nail polish and nail art.

“I hope Boys In Polish can help to dissolve gendered behaviours and expectations, allow people to shine be their true self.” I think that the conversations I have with my male clients contribute to the wholeness of the manicure experience. Talking about the design they have chosen and why, as well as what it means to them, opens a gateway to some really deep conversations. I like to think that even after the appointment, they look at their nails and think of the conversations and things they have unpacked and learned, because I also learn so much from them.

46 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

What nail art designs have you created for men? JY: All sorts, and that’s the beauty of nail artistry. It is such a personal experience and nobody has ever had the same thing. All the manicures I have done have been as unique and as personal as a fingerprint. They decide what they want painted, how many fingernails and the length or shape. One of my clients decided too have two nails with a glossy finish and one nail matte. The beautiful thing with my clients, friends and the Boys In Polish community is that there is no separation between what guys have and what girls have, and there shouldn’t be.

What are your hopes and plans for the future of Boys In Polish? JY: I would love to take Boys In Polish out of London. Boys In Polish International would be amazing! I also want to do some nail art workshops for men and boys, more events and collaborations with men in other creative ways. I want to do anything I can to spread the wholesome and loving energy of this platform. There is so much to do with it and I am openminded. I am working on a short film, and I have an amazing team of women to help and support me on that journey. I trust that as a movement, we will only continue to grow and my visions will manifest, in good time. They always do! I am just enjoying the ride. @boysinpolish

ANSWERS TO YOUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT RIA-JAINE Ria-Jaine is an accounts expert with personal taxation as her specialist area and the beauty industry her primary focus. A qualified nail tech and owner of The Beauty Accountant, Ria worked in the beauty industry on a part-time basis but noticed that many people in the sector were missing vital business knowledge. Many did not know about the UK income tax system and obligations imposed by HMRC and so Ria now uses her specialist knowledge, experience and skills to offer support and guidance on setting up and maintaining a compliant business. After completing her AET teaching qualification, Ria created accredited tax and accounting workshops for the beauty industry to help individuals get the best from all areas of their business while managing their books and tax obligations.

A

s we approach the most wonderful time of the year, beauty businesses and accountants are preparing for an influx of work. Traditionally, it’s a time when I receive many tax and accountancy enquiries, however, due to businesses bouncing back, I am receiving questions not just on tax returns – but on business structure, VAT and payroll. This article will be useful for anyone who is starting to think about their business and goals for the New Year but are too busy right now to stop and research or reach out for the answers.

There is a lot of paperwork involved and a number of processes to follow when registering or winding down a company. A separate business bank account is also needed, but get in touch if you are undecided about which one to choose.

is the VAT threshold? Q What Once turnover reaches £85,000, companies and individuals must register for VAT. This can be daunting for some businesses as this also means that VAT must be collected on all sales and paid to HMRC.

The decision to incorporate is often based on the limited risk and tax savings. Corporation tax is lower than personal income tax, although there are changes coming into place with the new marginal rates of corporation tax, and it’s worth talking to your accountant to learn more about it.

A tip when reaching the VAT threshold is to plan early and before reaching the registration threshold so that you can introduce price increases gradually. A lot of business owners are starting to hit this threshold quicker than they anticipated since reopening so don’t forget to count back 12 months as VAT threshold is monitored on a 12-month rolling basis.

Companies are required to register as a limited company and to file annual accounts, confirmation statements and submit returns to Companies House and HMRC. These accounts must follow certain accounting standards and legislation.

Congratulations to those hitting the VAT threshold towards the end of this year, as it definitely is something to celebrate and not to fear! For those that are registering, make sure you are on the right scheme as flat rate may be beneficial.

Q

Why do people incorporate?

“A consistent trend within the industry is the use of self-employed workers. If you are a business owner and you use self-employed individuals, please ensure that your agreement does not fall under employment.” 48 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

SCRATCHCOLUMNIST are ‘employees in disguise’? Q What A consistent trend within the industry is the use of self-employed workers. If you are a business owner and you use selfemployed individuals, please ensure that your agreement does not fall under ‘employment’. These individual businesses should be free to collect their own takings, promote their own services wherever and whenever they like, choose their working hours, decide on their own clothing and any potential customer should be aware that the individual is their own entity. This is a grey area and there are various opinions about this but my best advice would be: if you are treating individuals as staff, deciding work hours, providing equipment and materials, advertising as your own business name with uniform etc., then you should check with your accountant or legal team as soon as possible in case the contract is, in fact, one of employment. View a free webinar with a HR expert discussing this topic by scanning here

TOP TIP

If you are employing staff, check out incentives available such as apprenticeships and the government’s Kickstart Scheme grant. If you missed out on the first round of support for apprenticeships, you will be pleased to know that from 11 January 2022, you will be able to apply for a payment of £3,000 for apprentices with an employment start date from 1 October 2021 to 31 January 2022. Applications via www.gov.uk close on 15 May 2022. Applications for the Kickstart Scheme are still open but be quick – as they close on 17 December.

Do I need an accountant if I

Q am self-employed?

Self-employed individuals are required to register with HMRC and submit personal income tax returns each tax year. An accountant is not always required for a self-employed business. However, I recommend speaking with an accountant to determine whether it would be beneficial to outsource accounting. This would enable the self-employed individual to spend more time on their business and be safe in the knowledge that their accounts are being prepared and submitted by a qualified accounting professional.

BYTE-SIZE NAIL TECHNOLOGY Ctrl + shift your focus to the work of Joselyn McDonald, the mastermind behind high-tech nail designs that can pay for the bus, store files & more… REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

T

echnology and nail art may seem worlds apart, but US technology designer, Joselyn McDonald, has combined the two to creative innovative and oh-so handy nail designs. So much more than eye-catching creations, her nail styling incorporates functional tools to aid the wearer’s day-to-day. Stemming from an interest in how femaleoriented technical fields are not respected in the same way as their male counterparts, Joselyn’s Digits project explores how nail art, traditionally considered a feminine profession and aesthetic, can be used to interact with technology. “After years of researching and designing technologies, I was frustrated that women’s experiences are often overlooked in the process of technology design,” Joselyn says. “I thought about how refreshing it would be if female aesthetics created advantages in the realm of tech.” Her work also celebrates the technical aspects involved in nail artistry – whether in the chemical formulas, specialised toolsets and technical processes used, or the explorations of 3-dimensionality and sculpture that Joselyn is delighted to increasingly see within the nail art space. “I hope your audience recognises how technical its profession is and feels pride in how quickly the nail art field advances,” she tells Scratch. “I also hope nail technicians consider how their field is truly one of the most innovative that I’ve seen and keep up the momentum.”

The creative technologist explains that she has always loved nail art, citing working with electronics and therefore not being able to have long nails as a reason why she has wanted them for years. Nail artists that inspire her include Kro Vargas of @krocaine who freestyle paints all of her designs, as well as Taichi Yamane of @taichiymn and Tomoya Nakagawa of @tomonyan55, whose sculptural nails look like something ‘from another cooler planet,’ according to Joselyn.

She adds that it is inspiring to see more men and those who identify as non-binary explore nail artistry. But it is the opportunities that her nail art has given to females within the technology realm that excite her the most. “I’ve had teachers reach out to me to ask how they can teach their students how to add LEDs to their nails. They want to engage female students and get them to explore tech concepts in an exciting way that aligns with their interests. That has been very meaningful to me,” comments Joselyn.

Guess what? These nails have been created with biodegradable materials that dissolve when submerged in water for two days!

From her collection of nail designs – which range from 3D printed and LED nails to USB, stylus and even flower vase nails, Joselyn’s favourite look is her bus pass design. This used a RFID (radio frequency identification) tag, allowing her to quickly pay for her bus fare using her nails. “They aren’t the most beautiful nails I’ve made, but the interaction of using my nail to pay for my bus fare was a truly a delightful and thrilling experience for me, the bus driver and my fellow passengers,” she says. What can we expect to see next in the nail space from the technology designer? Joselyn tells us that she would like to join a growing movement of making 3D ceramic printers, building her own to make digital models of nail designs, print them in clay, then glaze and fire them. www.joselynmcdonald.com @gucci_bagel

Get to know the names behind companies & brands that are attracting attention across the nail & beauty scene HW Nail Systems Founder of HW Nail Systems, Hayley Winder, was inspired to create a hypoallergenic nail system after developing an allergy that prevented her from working with certain nail products. “Witnessing an increasing number of techs and clients suffering from allergic reactions solidified my desire to create something which, as an active nail tech, made my work life easier, safer, and fun again,” Hayley comments. Her flagship range, hypoGEL, is HEMA/HPMA/IBOA free and features gel polishes, bases, top coats and a hard gel. But it’s the popular soak off base and builder gel, FlexiB® that is Hayley’s favourite product. “One of the products to become a tech favourite is a soak off builder gel,” she reveals. It was this product that spurred Hayley to launch HW Nail Systems in March, despite many products being ready a couple of years earlier. “It was a time when money was at its lowest, but after spending a lot of time helping other brands build good relationships with customers and educating, it was time to put that energy, knowledge and passion into my products,” she says. HW Nail Systems also offers an LED lamp, files, forms, tips, brushes and glitters, as well vegan-friendly body products. Starting her salon journey at the age of 14, Hayley’s experience has helped her determine what she wants to see in a nail product. However, she also cites working as a nail tech while producing her products as a factor in their success. “Being an active tech while developing and testing the range makes each product special, as clients get to enjoy my products first hand and provide feedback.” www.hayleywinder.co.uk

MB BEAUTY MB Beauty is a vegan-friendly cuticle oil brand, loved by techs and celebrities alike. Founded during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, it hasn’t been an easy ride for Molly Barnett, who decided to make the move from owning a beauty salon to creating her own product range. The MB Beauty team had to deal with delays brought on by the pandemic soon after launching, but Molly couldn’t be happier to reveal her own range – in fact, she says it’s a ‘dream come true.’ “It hasn’t been easy and at times I’ve felt like giving up, but I’m proud that I kept going,” she tells Scratch. “I’m proud of how many brand ambassadors the brand has, how many people stock the products in their salon and how many use them on a daily basis.” The support of not only the nail industry but also the public and those in the public eye make it easy for Molly to love her job. “When our first celebrity messaged us saying she loved the products, I was overwhelmed,” she says. Award-winning actress and comedian, Samantha Baines, and the Coronation Street cast are just some of the celebs that regularly buy from MB Beauty. The range is made up of handy cuticle oil pens for on-the-go, as well as 30ml droppers – in scents ranging from Molly’s favourite and the most popular scent of Coconut, to fruity choices such as Mango and Cherry. Molly tells us that she’s always looking at how to grow the business, promising more to come within the next few months. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MBBeautyProductsShop 56 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

NAILSCENE The Cuticle Oil Company On a wet and windy day in 2019, while waiting for their children in front of the school gates, Lisbet Sandland, owner of a Hertfordshire based nail salon, and Carli Woolley, a packaging and product designer in the beauty and drinks industries, formulated the idea for The Cuticle Oil Company. After two years’ experimenting with different formulas and branding, the company launched earlier this year. Both with over 25 years’ experience in their fields, it was an easy decision to combine Lisbet’s need for a high quality, environmentally-friendly cuticle oil range and Carli’s background in high end, luxury packaging. Protecting the environment is at the forefront of the business, and The Cuticle Oil Company’s vegan-friendly range is produced in small batches in the UK and contains only natural ingredients. “We believe that any product used on the nails and skin should be beneficial and free from synthetic perfume. We are conscious not to add unnecessary packaging to our products. Our glass bottles are fully recyclable and re-usable,” the pair comments. And the powerhouse duo is always on the lookout for innovative ways to make products more environmentally and consumer-friendly. They are currently working towards offering refills of their bottles, as well as a nut-free oil for those with allergies. The range boasts three oils, in 30ml desk and 10ml retail sizes. ‘Nourish’ defends against premature ageing, ‘Repair’ soothes damaged nails and cuticles, and ‘Calm’, the favourite of Lisbet, Carli and clients, relaxes and destresses. Despite the triumph of The Cuticle Oil Company, launching the brand did not come without its challenges. “Starting out, we were only thinking about how fabulous we could make the oils and packaging – we didn’t think about actually setting up a business and everything that that involves,” Lisbet and Carli say. But the pair couldn’t be prouder of all that has been achieved through perseverance. For Lisbet, she gets a warm glow each time a client purchases one of the ils and Carli enjoys the thrill that comes with building a successful brand. www.thecuticleoilcompany.co.uk

Meraki Professional Nails wasn’t the career path that Sarah Curtin, owner of Meraki Professional, envisaged. Over 11 years ago, while studying for a degree in pharmaceutical biotechnology, a foray into nail technology led to a part-time hobby that would turn into a full-time job. Her love for nails materialised into her own salon and later, the Meraki Training Academy, and from there a product range seemed like an obvious next step. “I wanted to develop a range of products that were easy to use for beginner nail technicians but also extremely safe, long-lasting and durable,” Sarah explains. Her knowledge in and passion for cosmetic chemistry, which is a driving force behind the high quality and safe nature of Meraki Professional’s products, is something that she has integrated into her education. “During lockdown, we developed our own programme that not only teaches the basics, but also the important science aspects of nail technology that are sometimes overlooked, setting a new benchmark for education,” she tells us. After trialling Meraki Professional products in her salon for the past few years, Sarah officially launched the brand this year with a range of tools, prep products, gels, acrylics and gel polishes, and it has been well received by nail techs. “We love looking at all the amazing creations we’re tagged in on Instagram. It gives me a great sense of achievement knowing that thousands of nail technicians across the country are using our products,” Sarah says. Her favourite product in the range is the builder gel, which has an easy-to-use mousse-like texture that her students love. She cites the thought that has gone into each aspect – from the chemical formula to the molecular weight of ingredients, the pigments, viscosities and the packaging – as the reason why it has been successful with techs. www.merakiprofessional.ie

BEAUTY Nail expert, salon owner, educator & mentor, LIZA SMITH, shares her wisdom & advice to benefit your business

20/21 WINNER

WHAT WILL YOUR CLIENTS WANT IN 2022?

C

an it really be a year since we were in another lockdown? This time last year, we were soon to find out that Christmas 2020 would be be cancelled, and we would not return to work until the middle of April.

We made a lot of changes to our businesses in 2020, and again in 2021. Next year will be no different and it may be the most important year for your business so far. After navigating a pandemic for so long, the buying behaviour of consumers has changed. Clients haven’t been going on holiday, to weddings or enjoying many social activities and this has had an impact on the desire for their usual beauty services. We have welcomed new clients to our business, some have returned for business as usual and some haven’t. If we are going to plan for 2022, a good move is to look at the top consumer spending trends.

1

3

Education will be more valued

Consumers are savvier and more likely to spot and ignore direct selling and ads. We need to educate them about how our services help to solve their challenges. Don’t focus on discounts; focus on building a helpful ongoing relationship by providing things like how-to guides and showcasing email sequences.

“We need to be more conscious of our carbon footprint and look for ways to show our commitment to using brands and practices that are consciously sustainable.”

Online shopping will dominate

Online sales are predicted to hit $4.2 trillion by the end of 2021 and 68% of Brits are more likely to shop online compared to pre-pandemic, which means our online presence is more important than ever. If you haven’t got a website, make sure you claim and set up Google My Business. This will drive traffic to your website or your social accounts. Getting testimonials on there will be the best way to get noticed by prospective clients.

2

a seamless and personalised customer journey that’s more about the experience than the price.

Gen-Z will have more influence Gen-Z refers to those aged 10-25 and accounts for 40% of all consumers. This group is more demanding and expects

4

Storytelling is key

A great way to educate is to tell a story. Storytelling is how your clients relate to the message you are communicating; just think of the John Lewis Christmas ad! Case studies, testimonials and real-life observations of the benefits of what we do is a great starting point.

5

Processes need to be systemised

Automation is hardly new, but salon businesses have been slow up until now to move over to a digital diary and automated appointment reminders. Clients want the process of every interaction to be as simple as possible. Staying with human-led processes like a paper and pen diary will create a lot of unnecessary work and you will be at risk of missing things.

6

Sustainability is a hot topic

Two thirds of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. We need to be more conscious of our carbon footprint and look for ways to show our commitment to using brands and practices that are consciously sustainable. More of our clients will start to make choices based on our decisions.

Scratch explores the defining features of the Japanese Kawaii nail style & why its popularity is growing in the West REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

W

ith #kawaiinails used on over 180,000 Instagram posts and amassing 21 million TikTok views, the style – a signature Japanese look – is spreading its appeal across the globe. So why has the nail aesthetic taken off and what exactly makes Kawaii nail art, ‘Kawaii’?

“Kawaii nail art can be traced back to the early 90s, with the rise of ‘Gyaru’ fashion which incorporated long, elaborate nails with lots of cute parts and gems,” explains Japanese nailist, Ruth White of @fleurinails, who brought her Japanese nail art skills over to England and works in Essex. “This Ruth White has now evolved to many styles; including ones to match subculture fashion styles, ‘Ita’ which incorporates anime and manga character designs, and ‘Kawaii’.

WHY KAWAII?

Nail stylist & model: Scarlett Senter Make-up: Christabel Frankin Photographer: Arienne Jonas

“Having cute things or characters I love on my fingertips and seeing them brightens up my day!” Ruth White

“Many of my clients have told me that they never expected to be able to get the nail styles they see on social media here in the UK,” Ruth adds. However, with more of a spotlight being cast on Japanese pop culture thanks to television programmes, video games and social media, Ruth reveals that Kawaii nail art is now being recognised on a global stage.

NAILART Lydia Rhodes of @bubblegumclaws from Austin, Texas, USA creates hand-painted Kawaii nail designs and owns her own business, Bubblegumclaws, selling Kawaii-themed nail supplies and accessories. She tells Scratch that Kawaii nail art is only so popular because Japanese nailists have paved the way for the style to be fun and wearable. Lydia Rhodes

Lydia praises the work of popular Japanese tech @kai32 for mastering the art of achieving a cohesive look using different designs on each nail, as well as the 3D work of nailists @arisa.angenail, @sty_nail and @china.r.nail. Translations of ‘kawaii’ include ‘cute’, ‘tiny’ and ‘lovable’ – this is why the style is designed to evoke an overwhelming feeling of ‘that is so cute, I need it’. While the first experience that Nails by @kai32 many have with Kawaii culture is through Japanese imports like anime and manga, Kawaii nail art also features delicate details like lace and bows. “Kawaii style is inspired by Japanese Lolita fashion, where dresses often feature multiple characters and tell a story, reminiscent of a simpler time – so in Kawaii nail art we see themes like ice cream parties, floating in the clouds, milkshakes with whipped cream and cherries, and strawberry picnics,” says Lydia.

Nails by @sty_nail

What I love about Kawaii nail art is...

“How it evokes a feeling of expressing my inner child. Growing up with five brothers, I did not get to do traditionally ‘girly’ things, and Kawaii nail art allows that part of myself to thrive.”

NAILART The same dreamy feel can be seen in the colour schemes used, as celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey of @nailsbymh explains. “Colours are usually light and delicate – think shades of pink, purple, anything pastel and jelly-like. Glitter is also very Kawaii, especially iridescent and holographic glitters,” she says. “Kawaii nails tend to be maximalist and can be very bespoke – there’s no limit to what you can create. You can opt for 3D styles, embellishments, encapsulated art, hand-painted designs, decals and so on,” adds Michelle. Michelle Humphrey

However, Lydia tells us that there’s a darker side to Kawaii style, centred around the idea that with light there is always dark. “The dark side of Kawaii nail art incorporates black, dark purple and reds into the pastel palette. There are pastel goth elements like dripping oozing nails, piercings, knives and flames,” she explains.

WHY KAWAII?

“It’s light-hearted and fun. It offers freedom to express your individual style and embrace your inner cuteness.”

It is an aspect that she has considered in her own life, after a bad experience working at a Kawaii nail salon. The nail Michelle Humphrey style, just like her experience of the Kawaii nail art scene where she is in Texas, isn’t all rainbows and sparkles, she comments. “I had to step away from the soft, girly side of myself which I so often invoke in this artform and bring out my hardness and strength, ultimately leading me to the creation of my own brand.” So how can nail pros incorporate Kawaii nail art into their portfolio? Ruth encourages techs to be inspired by Japanese nailists on Instagram and YouTube and to watch their tutorials. “You may even learn some new tricks while researching,” she points out.

What sparked your interest in nails? While on maternity leave with my first child, I painted my own nails because I couldn’t afford to go to the salon to get them done professionally. My sister-in-law asked me to do hers and I found that I enjoyed how therapeutic it was, and I also discovered that I wasn’t too bad at it! I was in a minimum wage job that I didn’t really enjoy, and I’d found a job I had never considered. I had nothing to lose and so much to gain, so I saved up and started searching for nail courses. I attended some beauty courses to get into the industry and attain a manicure qualification before I discovered CND™ training, which I completed in December 2009. Since then, I have immersed myself in all things nails!

Walk us through your career – what are your highlights? I began my career with my first job in March 2010 and attended The Event hosted by Sweet Squared in May that same year. The year that followed was a whirlwind introduction to the industry as the launch of Shellac™ became a global phenomenon and if you didn’t have it, you couldn’t really get your hands on it, as it had sold out worldwide. Fortunately, I’d stocked up while at The Event, meaning I quickly became fully booked and continued to learn on the job. 70 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

In 2011, Sweet Squared posted an open call for people to apply for educator roles in order to cater to the demand for education in Shellac™, and so as an avid user of the system since its launch, I decided to apply and landed a role.

This was a highlight in my career, which led to working at various fashion shows and events, at the 2012 Olympics and teaching in luxurious spas in London. My confidence grew as I was surrounded by so many inspiring people. In 2012, I attended a trade show and met Hazel Dixon, who effortlessly sculpted a designed stiletto on my nail and finished with a 3D flower, which captivated me. From there, I attended many of her classes, before being invited to become a member of her education team in 2017. Educated and inspired by Hazel and the HD Nail Artist Academy team, my skills and confidence grew further and I went on to win a string of competitions and accolades. These included BABTAC Nail Technician of the Year, first, second and third places across UK trade show competitions in many different disciplines, and I made it to the finals of the Scratch Stars Awards multiple times. Despite a run of successes, I hadn’t been brave enough to enter Nailympia as I

never felt good enough or ready for it, until 2019. I entered all of the categories and took home second place in Perfect Match Liquid & Powder and Liquid & Powder Pink & White Sculpt, first place Fantasy Nail Art, UK Top Tech and Nail Art Winner of Winners. This was something I’d never dreamed I would have achieved on my first time entering such a prestigious international competition. I still pinch myself now! Earlier this year, I finally won Mixed Media Artist of the Year and Nail Stylist of the Year at the Scratch Stars Awards after trying so hard a number of times, and it’s really put the cherry on top of my wins! It was a very proud night for me with my husband by my side to share in the celebrations. Why did you enter the Scratch Stars Awards & what was the inspiration behind your designs? I first entered around five years ago on a whim, as there’s nothing to lose in trying. I made it to the finals and that encouraged me to try again and again, as

GIRLPOWER

I really enjoyed the experience and love to push myself to do things that make me nervous! The inspiration behind my winning Nail Stylist of the Year nails came from my sister. She teases me and says I have a long neck (hers is just the same!) so she calls me a giraffe. I was frustrated with the designs I’d considered initially, and I wanted to do something fun, with vibrant colours that suited a long nail. While in my bathroom, I spotted a giraffe ornament she’d bought me, and inspiration hit! For the Mixed Media Artist of the Year category, we were given the theme of ‘united we stand’. It made me think of how the country had united to stay home, help others and support the NHS. The rainbow background was in tribute to the rainbows shared during lockdown, and I wanted to share a nurse as a hero – I’d seen a comic strip style gif online and that was the inspiration to create a ‘superwoman’ nurse. I loved the bold, bright colours of both creations. What advice do you have for fellow nail techs hoping to emulate your success? Take any opportunity that comes your way. Enter the competition, apply for the job and

say yes to things that make you nervous, as you’ll never know if you can until you try! Even if you don’t think you can succeed, every experience is a learning experience, so every chance you don’t take is a lost opportunity to learn something. If you succeed, then even better! What do you love about the nail industry? I love that the industry is such a fast-moving, vibrant place. I like to learn new things and there is always an innovation or new technique to try; my mind is always so full of new designs and styles to create, but there are never enough hours in a day to do it all! I also love that it’s given me so many lifelong friends. How do you feel the industry has changed since the impact of the pandemic? While Covid-19 and the lockdowns were brutal for many businesses individually, the overall impact has actually given both consumers and techs a heightened awareness and knowledge of hygiene and health & safety. I was lucky to have been taught well from the start, but I feel this gave the industry a real wake-up call, and now there’s no excuse for people not to have great hygiene practices in their place of work. Hygiene, consultations and understanding insurance have all been pushed into the spotlight these last 21 months and that, in my opinion, has raised some of the lower standards of our industry, which is a positive side effect. >> SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 71

GIRLPOWER

What nail training do you offer? I teach beginner to advanced level nail courses and my most requested course is for e-file education. My favourite courses to teach are salon trend art classes, as they are seasonal, current and offer effective styles to incorporate into a busy salon. In the New Year, I hope to offer more dates for advanced classes in the likes of Fantasy nail art and extreme nails to help me indulge in and share the aspects of nail art I love the most. As a part of the Hazel Dixon Nail Artist Academy, I offer non-brand bias training. This means as well as salon techs and independent techs, we also welcome (and regularly get to see) techs from other training companies or those who use other brands but want to upskill. By keeping training focused on skills as oppose to products, we have some really positive networks with multiple nail brands and training providers. Ultimately, all educators should have the same primary focus; to help create better skilled, more knowledgeable techs in our industry, so having such an open-door policy for training helps us do our bit to push the standards within the industry and raise the skill levels for everyone, which benefits us all. What are the nail products you can’t be without? I love glitter and sparkle, but the simple basics like good firm nail forms, such as those from HD Pro Nails, are things I just can’t do without. They don’t budge and always hold their shape, which is essential for well-structured nails. I’m a creature of habit so I have loved the Luxio Build for years, but I was recently persuaded to try the HD Pro Flex it! range and was wowed by it! It’s actually had me considering changing what I wear from acrylic to Flex it! as it performed so well on both my own and my clients’ nails. What are your interests and hobbies outside of nails? I took up learning archery earlier this year which I love; it’s so different to anything else I do and I’ve met so many new people. I found myself becoming part of the committee for our local club as the junior liaison officer, helping to organise events, supporting juniors in their quest for progress badges or going to competitions. It’s a brilliant sport that has given me something active to do with my family. 72 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Tell us about university! What are you studying? I got bored quickly during the start of the first lockdown, so I enrolled on an art and environmental degree. I learn art history, how to analyse art, art practice as well as learning about the environment and sustainability. It’s been enlightening and has led me to look at the world differently and understand myself on a deeper level. It’s brought out the feminist spirit in me and has also helped develop my creative thinking. What does an average week look like? On Mondays and Tuesdays, I take the children to school and then go to university, which starts at 9:30am with a morning meeting, followed by a studio session where we discuss ideas, share work or spend time creating, and then an afternoon lecture. I go home and pick the children up from my sister’s house on my way if my husband, Dan, hasn’t already collected them, and have clients at my home studio from 6:30pm until 8-8:30pm. On Wednesdays I see clients from 9:15am 1pm. I have a bite for lunch and then leave for uni, as I have a botanical drawing class at 2pm. At 5pm I go to the archery club with the family as it’s a lovely space to lose a few hours, and we’ll head home at about 7:30pm, swinging past the chip shop on the way so nobody needs to cook! On Thursdays I see clients all day and then again in the evening from 6pm-8pm, and on Fridays I do the same, but have the evening off. I don’t tend to go out on a Friday evening, but it’s nice to have an evening to myself, as I might catch up on essay work or do my nails. On Saturdays I’ve recently reduced my working hours so I work a half day. I work for a few hours and then go to archery with Dan and my boys (weather permitting) and I teach on Sundays during term time. I try to teach every other week so it’s not full-on every weekend. How do you wear your own nails? My favourite style is medium to long almond nails with a French finish, often mixed with glitter, crystals or designs in strong colours. As a pale person, pastels or very light shades do me no benefit! More recently, since working after the lockdowns, I’ve kept them shorter purely because it’s quicker for me and more practical, as I’m busier than ever. www.nailykayley.com /nailykayley @nailykayley

Light! Working on tiny canvasses requires a keen eye & plenty of great lighting. But which lamp suits your nail tekking needs? Brighten your setup with a focus on the offerings from Daylight Company… HELENA BIGGS REPORTS We can often take light for granted, until the clocks go back and we ‘lose’ an hour of it a day. It has a positive and dramatic effect on lives and work – and is essential at the nail station, at which you can spend hours each day poring over designs and perfecting product application. Understanding this need is Daylight Company, founded in 1987 to ‘bring daylight indoors’ to improve work performance and efficiency. “We recognise that many people often have difficulties performing a task because they cannot see their work well enough,” comments a spokesperson for the company. “We believe that we can make a difference to their lives by designing the perfect light for their specific needs.” Daylight Company lamps and magnifiers are focused on users in five key markets; arts & graphics, health & beauty, sewing & crafts, sight loss and industry & inspection. By understanding the exact nature of light required and the ergonomic requirements of the task in hand, the company creates solutions that allow people to do what they love for longer and in greater comfort – preventing squinting, hunching and eye strain. “Beauty and health professionals are understandably amongst the most demanding of our customers,” comments Patrick Jacquelin, founder & MD, Daylight Company. “They work hard, really need to see clearly and often use our lamps for many hours a day. I

hope you all have a wonderful last month of 2021. It’s been an absolute honour to write for Scratch this year and I’m so grateful for the opportunity and every single like, share, and message regarding my articles. It really does mean the world to me, so thank you! As the year comes to a close, I want to wish you all the best for 2022. December is our busiest month of the year for a number of reasons, but try to enjoy every single second. Create as many glittery nails as you physically can, eat Christmas chocolates, sing Mariah Carey songs at the top of your lungs, enjoy all the gatherings and giggles – and most importantly have a lovely time with the people who mean the most to you. I can’t wait to celebrate properly again this year. I want to feature some food for thought in this, my final column. Hopefully, it will offer some positive notions to support your move into the New Year. These are things that will motivate you and perhaps inspire you to make some changes and keep striving for your goals. Jouvan and I always love setting new goals and talking about what we’d like to achieve as one year ends and a new one begins. He shared a list of thoughts with me one December and I wanted to share it with you too, but I have also added some ideas of my own.

1. Associate with the ‘right’ friends. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness. Surround yourself with people who lift you up; those who boost or at least match your energy, those who will help you over any hurdles and those who believe in you when it’s hard to believe in yourself.

2. Work at something you enjoy that is worthy of your time and talent. Never forget why you started your career, and let this be your fuel on the days when things get tough. You were given these dreams and talents for a reason, so run with them. You never know where things may take you. 3. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully. Business is more than nails. Share the wonder that is you with the world. Be bold, put yourself out there and be unapologetically you. Your personality and the way you make people feel is a huge part of why they will come back to see you time and time again. 4.

Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. It’s fab when people are eager to cheer us on, but don’t wait for the cheers; be your own cheerleader! You’d cheer on your best friend, your loved ones or your child, so treat yourself as someone you love. You are incredible.

5. Be forgiving of yourself and others. We all make mistakes, have done so in the past and will do so again – but be forgiving. You are human and it’s okay to fluff up, as that’s how we grow.

6.

Be gracious. Listen to yourself and your body. Rest is good! Taking time out is healthy!

7. Have a grateful heart. The easiest way to turn around a tough day is to find something you can be grateful for. Grab a pen and paper and write down three things that you are grateful for. My dad always used to encourage me to chat about my daily highlights when I was younger and it still makes me smile now. 8.

Be persistent. Keep going! The world needs your ideas, your talents and your gift.

SCRATCHCOLUMNIST

STEP-BY-STEP: SUPER-SWEET CANDY CANES For my Christmas nail art tutorial, I’ve used glitter and chrome to create a striking (but also chic) candy cane effect. Step 1 Using your chosen gel polish system, apply base coat followed by two coats of a red gel polish shade, curing between each coat. Apply a no-wipe top coat, cure and apply red chrome powder. I then apply two layers of top coat, curing in between, ensuring that the edge of the nail is capped to prevent the chrome from tarnishing. When you have cured the top coat, paint a dot in the centre of the nail using a white art gel and dotting tool or detailer brush. Step 2 Using a detailer brush and the white art gel, paint swirls all around the nail, leading away from the dot to the edge of the nail. Take your time to perfect the look. Step 3 Once you are happy with the swirl, carefully drop some fine white glitter over the nail and cure. Step 4 Use a soft brush to dust off the excess glitter. Consider different colours to change up the look post-Christmas.

No one in the whole world will ever be you. You are the only you that will ever exist. Don’t deprive the world of your ‘you-ness’!

9. Treat everyone you meet as you wish to be treated. #Bekind is more than just a hashtag! 10. Commit yourself to constant improvement. Keep growing and keep learning. This is one of the most incredible things about our industry. There is always so much more to learn, new things to try and new friends to make. Immerse yourself in it all.

11. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions or power but on relationships with people you love and respect. Social media is, and always will be, an incredible tool for business but it is also a highlight reel. Try not to get sucked into negativity or compare yourself to others. Use it as your own personal portfolio.

12. Be a self-starter. Whatever it takes to keep yourself motivated; from journaling to meditation, working out or having a nice quiet bath – do it as often as you can. 13. Be bold and courageous. When you look back on your life, you will regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did. If there is someone else out there doing exactly what you’d like to be doing then this is proof that it’s possible. Go for it! No one can take the leap for you. It could be the best thing you’ve ever done! 14. Take care of those you love, because love is really all we need. Merry Christmas! Keep shining.

Love always, Chan x

TALK TIME WITH... JOUVAN!

For the last interview of the year I couldn’t think of anyone I wanted to feature more than my partner and Clawgasmic co-founder, Jouvan. He truly is remarkable at what he does and I know that my salon would never have got to the level it did without his guidance and support. I wanted to quiz him about marketing to help you all start the New Year with a bang. Jouvan – thank you for always believing in me. You are incredible and I’m your number one fan forever.

How can nail techs boost their business in 2022 through marketing? 1. Find what makes you different and double down on it. We call this your ‘superpower’. We all have a superpower; you just need to identify yours. For example, do you have a signature nail style that gets you recognised? Is your French manicure on point? Do you have the cleanest prep in the land? The superpower doesn’t have to be nail-related. Consider what your salon is like, or your clothing style, or how you make people feel when they enter your workspace. All these things make up your branding. Identify your unique superpower and make sure it differentiates you from every other salon in your area and gives people a reason to come to you. 2. Become a local celebrity. This may sound scary but it’s easier than you think (utilise step three to achieve this). We live in a celebrity-obsessed culture and we can use that to our advantage. Get known in your local area for what you do. Don’t try to get hundreds of thousands of followers on social media if all you need is 100 regular bums on seats. Get people to know, like and trust you whether they are your clients yet or not. 3. Make use of what I call ‘edutainment’. This is a mixture of education and entertainment and is great for social media. Create content that educates potential clients in an entertaining way but also showcases your skills. You can find great examples on Instagram and TikTok. See what works well for other industries and create your own unique versions. Get creative, think outside the box and most of all – have fun.

Kelly’s Beauty Box Location: Crawley, West Sussex

Established in 2016 by Kelly Crawley, Kelly’s Beauty Box outgrew its roots as a home salon and moved to new premises in May 2021. “The business ethos is to provide a wide range of high-quality beauty treatments, ensuring that they are never rushed so that clients feel pampered from the moment they walk through the door,” Kelly reveals. Kelly has opted for striking salon décor to set the premises apart from local competition. “The salon has been decorated with a flower wall and a big neon ‘Treat Yourself’ light near where the nail treatments are carried out. On each nail desk, there is a phone charging point integrated into the nail desk lamp, which is free for all clients to use while having their treatment. This extra feature is appreciated by clients and aids convenience. “Velvet was chosen for furniture for a premium and plush feeling, which is enhanced by golden fixtures, fittings and decorative items. The blush pink and white interior offers a trendy, vibrant and feminine feel,” Kelly continues. “Pink is a sign of hope and is a positive colour, inspiring warm and comforting feelings. It calms and reassures our emotional energies, and my colleague and I feel it has a positive impact on each client’s experience.” www.kellys-beautybox.com

Karen Smith Beauty Location: Holmfirth, West Yorkshire

Karen Marie Smith entered the beauty arena in 2018 following a career in marketing. “As a mother to three young children, I had to find a salon space that would work around my family. After much deliberation and viewing numerous venues, I decided to create a studio space at home,” Karen reveals. “With the help of my husband, dad and brother-in-law, who are all tradesmen, an idyllic salon has been created in my garage. The aim of my business is to offer a calming, approachable and inclusive space with a personalised experience. “I spent a lot of time developing my business to ensure I could offer my clients solutions to their wants and needs,” Karen smiles. “I offer the option for clients to customise their experience, such as adding music and tailoring essential oils to their service. I want clients to feel special and appreciated and I aim to offer a slice of affordable luxury to support busy schedules and hectic lifestyles.”

As Karen was converting a garage, she had a blank canvas with which to work. “I decided to keep the exposed brick and combine an industrial theme with softer accents,” Karen reveals. “The bricks were painted white, ceilings lowered and LED spotlights fitted. I use an LED star light curtain as a backdrop on one wall to soften the industrial look and papered a wall with grey and copper wallpaper,” Karen explains. “A corner of the room features a flower display with a combination of peonies, English roses, and succulents, which gives the space a botanical feel.” /karensmithbeauty

CASE STUDY: Nailicious Kimberley Casey, session nail tech and owner of the Chesham-based Nailicious nail salon, learned about REM’s Salon Planning Service when she met REM UK sales director, Mick Roach, at a trade show.

“Mick provided me with some samples to test against glue, polish and acetone,” reveals Kimberley. “I had a good idea about the REM furniture items I wanted from the brand’s collection, but the wear was important as I was instructing a complete salon renovation – so all items needed to be fit for purpose. “As promised, the material samples stood up to all the tests, so I made the decision to use REM for my salon fit.” One of Kimberley’s main considerations was being respectful of the old building that houses her salon. “The building is very old with a lot of character, so I wanted to make sure that the furniture worked with it. I wanted a wood that looked aged to work with my beams and a leather look to complement – but I didn’t want a style that would date quickly.” Kimberley had purchased two separate shops that she was merging to create her salon, and while she knew her furniture needs, she had struggled to envisage where the items would go and how they would fit. “The REM Salon Planning Service was so helpful. A member of the team visited the space and took measurements before discussing the items I wanted, as well as materials and colours,” she explains. Then, it was a short wait while the team brought her vision to life.

INDUSTRYACHIEVEMENT

SISTER Siblings, Sam Marshall & Victoria Morley, share their separate success stories in the beauty industry, alongside life lessons & plans for the future EMMA HOBDAY REPORTS

SAM

Owner of The Beauty Guru salon, trans & inclusivity awareness educator, founding member of The Skin Collaborative & Habia advisor Sam Marshall always knew that she wanted to be a beauty therapist, and recalls making face masks when she was younger out of banana and avocado and applying to the faces of anyone who would let her. Sadly, she was bullied at school at the age of 15, so instead of doing A-Levels, she decided to enrol at college and do a BTEC in beauty therapy. When Sam left college at 18, she worked on make-up and perfume counters at Boots before applying for a job as a Boots skin specialist. Of all who applied, she was just beaten to the position by a Boots veteran, but it gave her a confidence boost that she was second in line for the role. When she moved to Australia for a year at the age of 19 for a working holiday, Sam learnt intimate waxing and how to be a better beauty therapist, before landing a job at Aveda. She transferred her role back to the UK and worked her way up to trainer and manager. After Aveda, Sam worked at Urban Retreat in Harvey Nichols, Manchester, for nine years until she was made redundant. She had been given the manager role at the age of 25 and managed a team of 30, and it gave her the grounding and experience to launch her own business; The Beauty Guru Salon in MediaCityUK, Manchester. She manages this alongside roles as a waxing, skincare and beauty educator and trans awareness educator. What are your career highlights? SM: I was asked to be on the advisory board for Habia for the National Occupational Standards, which was a real pinnacle in my career! I was also asked to be a trainer for Andrew Hansford, who is an incredible skin educator and all-round great person; I’ve learned so much from him. When he asked me to teach for him, it was a huge compliment – as I respect him so much. I was also recognised by the British Beauty Council and asked to do a talk at British Beauty Week about inclusivity. I’ve got a 86 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

voice, I’m a confident speaker, and I want to speak about my industry and use my voice for the greater good. Launching transgender & inclusivity awareness training has also been a huge career highlight. I love giving back to the beauty community by providing such invaluable information and training. I think talking about things that aren’t really talked about or are under-represented is important. Tell us about the transgender & inclusivity awareness training… SM: This training focuses on transgender terminology, as often language can be the first barrier for the relationship between client and practitioner, as well as helping attendees to understand how to de-gender services, how to be a trans ally and how to market inclusively. The training also includes how to make your workplace trans-friendly and inclusive, catering to practitioners who may be trans or non-binary. It is supported by Habia, The FNP and the British Beauty Council. The training is needed because many people are scared they’ll say the wrong thing, or if they don’t get it, they often say they don’t like it, which is not okay. We need people to understand and respect everyone. In a restaurant for example, why are there no gender-neutral toilets? Why are there prices for men’s haircuts and prices for women’s

haircuts in hairdressers? An interesting fact is that in Finland it’s illegal to price or offer a treatment based on gender… so we’ll get there, but we’re not there quite yet. What would you change about the beauty industry? SM: I want people to realise that we, as professionals, are valued – we don’t just paint nails, tame brows or make someone look pretty. We can really change someone’s day. People put a lot of trust in us and feel they can talk to us about a lot of things. We often hear big news or events before their friends or family do – such as if they’re pregnant, having trouble with their partner, or if something sad has happened to them. It should be valued more as a therapeutic industry. What are your top career tips for nail techs & beauty therapists? SM: Invest in decent training. If you pay half price, you pay twice! Research brands and products being used to make sure they are legitimate and price your treatments properly. Don’t copy someone else’s prices and ensure you earn the money you deserve to earn. Nails especially are really under-priced. If you can’t afford a business coach, get a mentor or sign up to some community forums where people are happy to give advice. Collaborate, don’t compete, and be kind to everyone. What are your goals for the future? SM: I’d love a salon with Keri Blue, my partner and business partner for transgender & inclusivity awareness training. I’d call it something like Skin & Hair, because that’s where our expertise lies. I want to grow the transgender & inclusivity awareness training and take it to other industries, and continue working alongside Habia and the British Beauty Council. I also really enjoy charity work and volunteering; it’s so rewarding. www.thebeautyguru.me /Beautygurumediacity @thebeautygurusalon

INDUSTRYACHIEVEMENT

VICTORIA

Success coach for entrepreneurs in the hair & beauty industry Victoria Morley worked in corporate sales for nearly 20 years and was considered successful due to her job title, earnings and recognition, but admits feeling miserable, unfulfilled and anxious. She believes that her mindset caused her to choose a path that did not align with her values, desires, or who she really was. But one day, she woke up with clarity, realising that she had the power to change her life. Victoria could see that she was ignoring her passions and talent for a salaried career’s perceived safety and security. Based on her realisations and personal experience, she understood coaching to be her path, and studied hard outside of her job to become an accredited life coach and neurolinguistic programming (NLP) master practitioner. She took the leap and finally quit her career of nearly 20 years while six weeks pregnant. What’s your vision as a success coach? VM: Success is different for each person but ultimately, it is based on fulfilling your potential, living with passion, having balance, and living aligned to you – the real you. I want that for everyone, and I believe it’s our right to have that. The tricky part is getting there, which is where I come in! Your level of success today isn’t a reflection of your ability, upbringing or environment; it’s a reflection of your mindset, and you can reprogramme your mindset for success. Your mindset is a collection of habitual thoughts and beliefs (primarily programmed during your childhood) that cause you to react in a certain way through emotions and actions. When you understand that you operate habitually, you can understand why correcting your habits has been so hard; it’s programmed into your subconscious, and this is where change starts! Tell us about your business… VM: While I was going through my accreditation, I coached my sister,

Sam’s friends who are also salon business owners. Many had invested thousands in coaching, programmes or courses that were industryspecific. It was immediately apparent to me that mindset was not tackled enough (if at all), which was having a massive impact on their success both personally and professionally. They had repeating patterns of selfsabotaging behaviour, were lacking confidence in their ability, decision-making and sales. They were putting themselves last, not charging their worth and having to work more to earn more. They felt unfulfilled, unworthy, and out of control of their destiny. Things started to change almost immediately once they started working with me because I was tackling their mindset at the level needed (the subconscious), and my methodology was getting life-changing results! Within three months of my launch date, I was helping 15 courageous salon business owners to change their lives and businesses through 1-2-1 coaching and my flagship group programme, The Success Accelerator. This is a transformational high-touch group programme that combines self-study modules with twice-weekly group calls. I launched The Success Academy in November; a membership for success with monthly training, workbooks and videos to help pros achieve success in their business and life. It has allowed me to create something between a mentorship and a membership. The monthly themes are what salon business owners are looking for; in December we tackle themes including; ‘Setting goals for 2022 that excite you’ and ‘Using storytelling to attract your ideal client’.

“Success is different for each person but ultimately, it is based on fulfilling your potential, living with passion, having balance, and living aligned to you – the real you.”

What do you love about your role? VM: I enjoy seeing clients move from a disempowered mindset to an empowered one, and its ripple effects on every aspect of their life and business. I see my clients putting their needs, wants and desires first for the first time in decades. The right coaching can impact the next generation, too. My clients recognise how their limiting beliefs have been rubbing off on their children, enabling them to correct that pattern and empower their children to grow up with a mindset that will help them reach their potential. Every person needs a coach (I have one) who can help you see a new perspective and keep you on track when you need it most. What are your goals? VM: I want to reach thousands through my mindset and success coaching and am working on creating a mindset course for students. If I had the mindset I have now at a younger age, I would have been unstoppable; so giving that gift to that generation will be great for them and this industry. I will also continue to expand my selfstudy course offerings (I have a Money Mindset Success Course available) and I plan to launch my Mastermind in 2022, a year-long comprehensive coaching and mentoring package for ambitious individuals. My mindset is my limit so I’m excited to see what 2022 brings for me – and my business. TECHTALK

MINUTES WITH…

Magda Gniewek

The talented tech & distributor of Magnetic Nail Design products gives Scratch a peek into her life & loves

How I got into nails… As a nail biter, I started wearing pink & white enhancements at the age of 16 and was hooked. After years of having my nails done, I moved to another city and couldn’t find a tech as good as my previous one so I decided I would train in the craft. I completed my first course in 2003 and I continue to enhance my skills. At first, I was painting my own nails and those of my close friends, but when I moved to the UK in 2010 I decided that I wanted to make a career out of nail styling.

A Magnetic attraction The Magnetic brand and its amazing stylists had caught my attention on YouTube and in professional magazines. I wanted to try the brand’s products but at the time of searching there was no active distribution in the UK. After seeing advertisements looking for UK brand partners, I jumped at the chance and it has been the best decision I have ever made. Magnetic Nail Design offers absolutely everything the nail tech needs and its products are of the highest quality, but what took my heart was the people behind it. Owners, Mey Liang and Jaap Steeman, and CEO Pepyn Borrel, together with the international team of trainers and distributors, have created a fantastic community in which we learn and grow stronger together.

new classes, designs, videos and step-bysteps. I often appear live on Instagram and Facebook and preparation for these takes a lot of time. Evenings are spent with my husband and my son, Anthony.

My favourite nail styles… I’m a huge fan of long nails and technical shapes. The modern almond is usually on my left hand with an eye-catching, colourful French manicure. My right hand usually has a gel polish overlay in a bold, bright colour. The more visible, the better! If I could, I would wear these all the time…

Animal: I love all animals, but at home I have a cat, Dora, who was a superstar during lockdown. I was going live on social media frequently and she insisted on lying or walking near my desk to be on screen!

A day in my life… I’m an early bird; I get up at 5-5.30am and the first hour is just mine for exercise, writing in my diary and reading or learning. Straight after that my focus is fully on nails! Social media, emails and office work all happen before I go to the Magnetic shop, at which I prepare and send orders. During the day, I try my best to create

If I wasn’t in the nail industry… I’d be an engineer. I always wanted to study engineering so I could build bridges and roads.

FUTURE

forecasts The Covid-19 pandemic has forced hygiene and handcare even more so to the front of everyone’s minds, with WGSN (the global authority on consumer and design trends) predicting that this will continue into 2023 and beyond.

Here’s to 2022! EMMA HOBDAY uncovers next year’s nail & beauty trends to note Kindr Medium Business Bundle £105 inc VAT www.kindr.co.uk

Never before has the public been so diligent with mental health and wellbeing. Self-care routines have taken on and been placed on a pedestal as the optimum time out, with Instagram and TikTok self-care rituals leading the way. Beauty brands are working to create innovative hybrid products with active skincare ingredients to clean, protect and hydrate hands and feet, with Instagrammable packaging and inclusive marketing. Self-care routines are expanding into hand and footcare, with consumers seeking a cleanser, serum, exfoliator and overnight mask for their hands and feet. Here’s how the handcare, footcare and nail market is set to change…

Treatments

Voesh 4-Step Pedi In A Box in Coco Colada Oasis £5.33 + VAT/RRP £9.99 www.voesheurope.com

Hand and foot treatments will focus on infusing calming and relaxing scents to help people unwind and fall asleep more quickly. Due to hand washing habits, hand masks, overnight oils and immunity-boosting hand creams will be commonplace in the market by 2023, especially multi-tasking and multi-sensorial hand masks – so consider these as retail items, alongside foot masks that clients can apply while working from home.

Care

Clients will continue to invest in quality hand cream with luxurious scents, skincare ingredients and essential oils. Skincare products such as face and eye creams have been incorporating custom ingredients for a particular skin type, and products with dual systems (such as a face cream and serum in one) are becoming increasingly popular. Handcare is due to follow skincare, and will develop custom boosters to be added to creams for the consumer’s particular concern. Intensely hydrating and rich formulas with antibacterial Kinetics Super Moisture Hand and antiviral properties to boost Cream £9.50 inc VAT www.bellabooprobeauty.co.uk immunity will also follow suit. www.kineticsnails.co.uk

Sanitisers

Pre-pandemic, the global hand sanitiser market was estimated to be worth $17.2 billion by 2026, according to Polaris Market Research, while the global handcare market was expected to reach $16.9 billion by 2025 (Millions Insights). The significance of hand sanitisers and handcare products due to Covid-19 is likely to see these sums increase while hands-free soap, hand gels and flushes in toilets in public spaces will also be sought by consumers.

FORWARD THINKING: The Mintel 2021 Global Beauty & Personal Care Trends Report The team at market intelligence agency, Mintel, unveils four key beauty trends to take away from 2021 and into 2022:

1. Wellbeing Brands have been highlighting the use of beauty services as a way to reduce stress, anxiety and panic and bring a sense of relaxation and luxury. “Brands that ‘broadcast’ their stringent safety guidelines will instil confidence and attract new customers seeking assurance in their desire to reconnect with retail experiences,” reveals the report. “Create strategies to educate consumers about the future of holistic wellness with self-care that touches on the mind-body-spirit connection.”

2. Value

Value is now being measured in quality, convenience, effect and impact rather than price. Consumers are considering the investment versus time dilemma now more than ever, with ‘lifetime value’ being a major aspect of consideration. “Experiences will become more valuable than tangible products as many consumers re-evaluate what is essential to survival.”

3. Technology

“Robust e-commerce strategies will allow brands to push boundaries, engage all of the senses and offer new layers of digital experience to guide shoppers. An enhanced technological beauty experience, both in stores and online will become the norm. “Customer loyalty will be driven through personalised digital touchpoints that focus on capturing individual lifestyle needs.”

4. Eco-friendly

Priorities are shifting to include environmentally conscious considerations when making a purchase. “Brands will continue to collaborate with and support local businesses as many consumers accelerate shifting purchase patterns to their own neighbourhoods. Create the next evolution of ‘clean’ by marrying ethics with safety to cater to the conscious and careful beauty consumer focused on avoiding undue risk inside and outside the box.”

NAILTALES

Nail services

Shorter manicured nails will be the go-to shape, and clients may seek tools to help keep nail tips clean. As well as chatting to your client, another option for those who simply want to relax during their nail appointment is to create soothing music playlists that clients can listen to when having their nails painted. Virtual hand massage tutorials will begin to circulate on social media to encourage clients to take some time out for themselves, encourage self-care and look after their mental health. Adaptogens, such as mushroom and ginseng, which have been popular in the wellness sector, will extend into hand and nailcare by 2023.

“In 2022 we can expect to see unexpected accents, crystal tips, and animal print tips,” says Emily Cording, Georgie Smedley Group ambassador. “The French manicure has been steadily making a comeback for a while now, but in the coming year, expect to see fun twists! Styles such as metallic pink-on-pinks or a wavy French look will be on trend. These nail art designs are a cool update to the negative space look, and don’t require a steady hand to replicate. “Natural and pastel tones will remain hot for 2022 as these calm shades are compatible with any outfit. In contrast, we will continue to see darker shades in the cooler months, such as burgundy and wine red in particular.”

Nicole Dowling, Pure Nails educator, believes that pastel tortoiseshell nails and animal print will be popular in 2022. “I’ve lost count of how many different zebra and cow print nails I have done this year!” she laughs.

“Now more than ever it is important to keep a close eye on social media, especially Instagram if you want to indulge in new trends,” comments Julie-Anne Larivière, Salon System nail expert Salon System Gellux and owner of Sketched by J-A in We Rise By Lifting Nails. “The trends that will likely be Others £11.95 + VAT. Available from big next year are the tortoiseshell, wholesalers nationwide. the French manicure (twists on the classic included too), stone and marble effects, and mismatched nail art. Also, negative space, geometric and animal print designs, chrome finishes and overthe-top embellishments such as loose glitters, sequins or gems will be in demand. “The shades will be bright and bold, like oranges, blues and bright pinks but muted nudes will also shine. From short square to oval to long coffin and stiletto, everything is acceptable!”

Light Elegance Neon Gel Paints £61.95 + VAT www.sweetsquared.com

“More elegant nail styles are gaining popularity, with less of a stiletto shape and more of a gently rounded oval shape,” says Jenni Draper, creative and PR manager at Louella Belle. “The colour green will be hugely popular, in varied tones and shades; rich dark greens, green chromes, lime green, khaki green and more.” Artistic Colour Gloss in Be Bold £12.95 + VAT www.louellabelle.co.uk

CND™ EA, Elissa Newton, says that small and dainty print patterns in an array of colours are great for 2022. “Versace has some beautiful and inspiring prints this season. Greens, purples and blues and anything that pops will be a big hit for SS22. “Metallics are going to be big in 2022. Leather is also making a big comeback and although we can’t thoroughly imitate the leather texture, this trend can be demonstrated through different finishes on nails, such as matte nails and leather tones. “The alternative French is also here to stay. Make sure you have a CND Shellac™ Matte Top Coat alongside the Classic Top Coat to create these looks.”

“Multi-coloured or alternative tips are starting to nose ahead of the hugely popular swirl designs as we move towards 2022,” says Light Elegance EA, Susan McGirl. “Light Elegance Gel Paints are highly pigmented and are perfect for creating coloured and alternative tips.”

Serbian nail designer and artist, Bojana Kostka believes that the Casting technique she uses to create extreme nails will help techs expand their repertoire in 2022. “Casting involves making a mold and then pouring in a liquid material. The form made during this process is called a cast. A mold can be cast more than once, allowing artists to create editions of their artwork,” she explains. “I have invented two new forms, Scar, a sharp edged shape and Morningstar, a futuristic butterfly shape, with round free edges on side walls. No matter how different those two shapes are, they are equally popular. “In terms of shades, black will always be popular as it gives nails another level of luxury, plus it goes well with any other colour. However, recently I’ve seen great work done with floral details and a mix of colours.”

Suzanne Smith, head of content and trends at Sally Beauty UK, predicts a vast array of styles from unexpected accents to adorning dainty heart gems and floral gel designs. “We also predict a return of the kooky French manicure, a twist on the traditional with reverse tips or abstract side tips in metallic shades. If you’re looking for a more pared-back look, the no-frills neutrals are always a failsafe, pretty but versatile style.”

Mental health & wellbeing coach, DAVE HEFFERNAN, offers profound pointers to help you achieve a positive mindset

I

cannot believe that it’s nearly 2022! After a slightly more positive year than 2020, I’m feeling better prepared to face the new year and all the opportunities and challenges it may bring.

At this time of year, I encourage my clients to reflect on all they have achieved. However big or small, you will have made great progress this year and it’s important to give yourself credit for it. Never forget to celebrate your wins.

ABOUT DAVE HEFFERNAN Dave Heffernan is a coach, speaker and mental health guru. He works with corporates and individuals to create awareness, end stigma and educate on areas surrounding mental health and wellness. Dave has launched programmes to support mental health in the workplace and to create positive, forward-thinking environments in which employees can enjoy working. Born in Salford, Dave dealt with extraordinary life issues including death, grief, abuse, homelessness and violence; but this didn’t hold him back. In fact, it created the momentum and passion that Dave spreads today. As an expert in mental health, Dave has moved from the raw, real-life issues that he’s faced, to helping other people face theirs.

How I can help I offer a range of services, from informal phone calls to regular, structured coaching and hypnotherapy sessions. 1. Know when you work best Some of us are morning people, while others get their best work done during the evening. If you know which category you fall into, load the majority of work into the hours when you’ll be able to concentrate the most, decreasing the risk of exhaustion.

2. Set your work hours

When you work for yourself it can be difficult to stick to a schedule. By setting specific work hours, you can better control the hours that you give yourself to rest. Although it’s fine to extend your working hours during busier times of year, don’t do it to the extent that you get no time to yourself.

3. Be realistic

It’s good practice to take time at the end of each day to think about what worked and what didn’t, helping you create habits over time that allow you to work in the best possible way. It’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve each day and not over-stretch yourself.

4. Plan ahead

www.daveheffernan.com /daveheffernanltd

There’s no doubt that the run up to Christmas and New Year is an incredibly busy time for nail technicians. With everyone wanting to look their best during the party season, it can be easy to get worn out and not take the time to rest. Here’s how to maintain a healthy work/life balance, and have fun while you do it:

@daveheffernanltd

92 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

During busy times, make sure you know exactly when you’ve got availabilty, and send messages to your clients in advance to let them know when they can book in for their festive nails, and reveal any time off you’ll be taking. Think about any special offers you might want to put on, or post new designs you’ve been trying out.

5. Give yourself something to look forward to We’ve all been there; slogging through a busy month with no end in sight, wishing we were splayed out on a sunlounger or even just having a lie in. It’s a great idea to book something fun to look forward to once the appointments start to die down. Whether it’s a day out with the family, a mini break away or just a couple of days with nothing booked in the diary, it’s really important to have some ‘me time’.

6. Ask for help

Your health; mental or physical, should always be the top priority. If you feel burnt out, give yourself some time off and get help if you need it. Whether you choose to speak to friends, family or a professional, sharing the load can be a weight off your shoulders and get you on your way to feeling better. Finding stability and calm, even in your busiest times, is so vital to ensure a healthy work/life balance. Working through each of the above points will absolutely help to get you there, but it’s incredibly important to reach out to someone if you’re struggling in any way. Keeping things to yourself will not make them go away, nor will it make your life any easier in the long run. As a professional mental health coach, I have spoken to people from all walks of life and regardless of background, the things we suffer from are often the same. If you’re looking for an impartial ear, I’m always happy to have an informal (or formal, if you prefer!) conversation with you. I have genuinely loved supporting so many of you over what has been one of the toughest periods in recent history. I have made so many friends and received so much love and positivity from the industry. Stay safe and have a profitable and productive December, and a special season filled with positive memories.
