En el caso del golf consideramos que la calidad de habilidades necesarias lo convierten en uno de los deportes más completos. Este exige desarrollar habilidades físicas, de coordinación y precisa motricidad; tanto como la visualización, la paciencia y la respiración; Asimismo es necesario lograr pensar táctica, técnica y estratégicamente y por sobre todo disfrutar el hecho de estar con uno mismo y de aceptar desafíos. El desarrollo de las habilidades para jugar este deporte no se logra en un día. Los jugadores y jugadoras que llegan a nuestra casa han trabajado mucho para poder estar en ese nivel. Es el momento cumbre, donde tendrán la posibilidad de compartir y disfrutar con el mundo entero todo aquello para lo que han trabajado. Realmente, el resultado no es lo más importante. La promoción del deporte y la amistad es el legado propuesto por Eisenhower. Recibimos con gratitud a los representantes de más de 100 países del mundo. Que disfruten nuestra revista!!

MUCHO MÁS QUE LA REVISTA DE UN CLUB El Buenos Aires Golf Club, una distinguida institución que tiene una de las mejores canchas de Golf de Latinoamérica y del mundo, cuenta con una publicación que es mucho más que la revista de un club. Con seis años de vida, Scratch, ha acompañado importantes acontecimientos que se fueron desarrollando en el Buenos Aires Golf Club. Desde 2009, quienes hacemos la revista estamos trabajando para darle una nueva impronta. Nuestro fin es que este medio sea un aporte a los aficionados del golf , un canal para la difusión de este fantástico juego y vía para la recreación del lector. Revistas de golf hay muchas y muy buenas. Scratch pretende en sus contenidos resaltar la vida y los valores de un club, transmitir la pasión por un deporte como el golf y conjugarlo con temas que si bien no son estrictamente deportivos o relacionados a este deporte, son de interés de quienes lo practican. El tratamiento de los contenidos busca la excelencia que exige el lector a quien va dirigida. Siendo conscientes de que contábamos con una base de lectores, como los socios exclusivos del Buenos Aires Golf, conociendo su perfil e interpretando sus gustos, ampliamos nuestra visión y buscamos llegar a personas que compartan el mismo estilo de vida, sus mismos gustos y hacia ellos comenzamos a dirigir este medio. En nuestras páginas abarcamos los temas relacionados al mundo del golf y el estilo de vida de los aficionados, de esta manera hemos ido incorporando contenidos como, biografías, turismo, tecnología, arquitectura, autos, vinos, sabores y placeres, cultura, literatura y temáticas diversas. THE AMATEUR WORLD OF GOLF

n 1958 se jugó el primer Campeonato Mundial de Equipos Amateur organizado por la Federación Internacional de Golf (IGF). El mismo se llevó a cabo en el mítico Old Course de Saint Andrews con la participación de 28 equipos que se disputaron el Trofeo Eisenhower. El nombre del trofeo de caballeros se debe a que fue el mismísimo Presidente de la EE.UU, Dwight D. Eisenhower quien lo donó e impulsó la competencia que desde ese entonces se organiza cada dos años y es una de los medios que la IGF tiene para alcanzar su objetivo primordial que es fomentar el desarrollo internacional del juego y emplear al golf como medio para promover los valores de la amistad y el compañerismo deportivo. Los Campeonatos son torneos bienales organizados por la Federación Internacional de Golf (IGF) en conjunto con asociación de golf de la nación anfitriona de cada edición y en los mismos participan equipos de varones y mujeres. Esta es la segunda oportunidad que se jugará en la Argentina y es la primera vez en la historia del WATC que un club se repite como sede, como es el caso del Olivos Golf Club anfitrión en 1972 en esa oportunidad junto con el Hindú Club y en esta edición 2010 compartiendo el torneo con el Buenos Aires Golf Club. La primera edición Caballeros jugada en Saint Andrews, fue ganada por el equipo Australiano integrado por Douglas W. Bachli, Peter A. Toogood, Bruce Devlin y Robert F. Stevens (Capitán)

The trophy ows its name to the fact that it was the President of the United States, Dwight D.Eisenhower who donated it .Since then it is held every two years and is one of the means the IGF has to achieve its primary objective : to promote the game´s international development and use golf to foster the values of friendship and fellowship in sport.. The biennial championships are tournaments organized by the International Golf Federation (IGF) in partnership with the golf association of the host nation of each edition, and both men and women´s teams take part. This is the second time it is to be played in Argentina and it is the first time in history of the WATC that a club hosts the tournament twice as is the case of Olivos Golf Club which hosted it in 1972 at the same time along with the Hindu Club and sharing this 2010 edition with the Buenos Aires Golf Club. The first gentlemen´s edition played at St. Andrews, was won by the Australian team made up by Douglas W. Bachli, Peter A. Toogood, Bruce Devlin and Robert F. El Olivos Golf Club vuelve a ser sede y en esta oportunidad junto al Buenos Aires Golf Club, que fue anfitrión, entre varios prestigiosos certámenes, en el año 2000, del Mundial de Profesionales ganado por Tiger Woods y David Duval, ambos golfistas también integrantes en su momento de los equipos amateurs de los Estados Unidos. En 1972 ganó el equipo de los EE.UU y nuestros equipos tuvieron una muy buena performance siendo los varones quintos y las mujeres octavas. Los integrantes de aquel equipo fueron Horacio Carbonetti, Luis Daneri, Juan Carlos Devoto, Roberto Monguzzi, Silvia Bertolaccini, Betty Rosello y María Caserta.

¿Cuál es su visión del golf amateur? Veo que el golf amateur está creciendo a tasas interesantes en el mundo y la Argentina no es ajena a ese crecimiento. Desde la AAG estamos haciendo un esfuerzo para apoyarlo con especial énfasis en los menores y en el interior. Ponemos también cuidado en tratar de transmitir valores formativos a través de nuestro deporte encareciendo a aquellos que entran en un nivel de alto rendimiento o competitivo a continuar sus estudios sean secundarios o universitarios y apoyándolos e incentivandolos para que obtengan sus títulos . ¿Qué representa hospedar la Copa del Mundo en la Argentina? Será una oportunidad única para tener en Argentina el mejor golf del mundo; muchos de estos chicos y chicas que pisarán nuestras canchas seguramente harán historia en el futuro cercano. Es al mismo tiempo un desafío para la AAG. Lo-

What is your view of amateur golf? I can see amateur golf is growing at very interesting rates in the world and Argentina is no stranger to this growth. From AAG we are making an effort to support it putting a special emphasis on the juniors and on the provinces. We also take good care in trying to transmit formative values through our sport asking those who get into a high performance or competitive level to continue their secondary or university studies and encouraging them to get their degrees. What does it mean to host the World Cup in Argentina? It will be a unique opportunity to have the best golf in the world in Argentina. Lots of the young people who are going to play in our courses will surely make history in the near future. It is also a challenge for the AAG. To manage to organize a successful World Cup is a good 19

grar un Mundial exitoso es una buena prueba que venimos haciendo las cosas bien, y refrendar todo lo conseguido hasta el momento con el esfuerzo de un consejo directivo y staff que día tras día trabaja para el mejoramiento de nuestro deporte. Tener a tantos equipos representativos de los mas diversos países –más de 70 en caballeros y de 50 en damas– es un honor al que queremos responder como corresponde. ¿Qué expectativas tiene respecto de los equipos argentinos? ¿Le gusta percibir al equipo como candidato al título? Por cierto estamos preparados para GANAR; no puedo esperar y desear otra cosa para los equipos de Argentina por la calidad de sus integrantes, su compromiso y su entrega total. Son muchos los países que cuentan con una gran tradición en este deporte y que ya han ganado la competencia; esta es una gran oportunidad para nosotros. ¿Qué es el golf para Usted? El golf nos enseña muchas cosas y el juego es sólo una parte de esa gran enseñanza. La importancia de las tradiciones y el respecto por los valores que nos han inculcado desde chicos, también hacen a la practica constante de este deporte que es singularmente maravilloso. Siento que tenemos una deuda con el país y espero podamos saldarla, aportando desde el golf, educación y formación de valores éticos ya que creo que ambas son una de las principales carencias en la Argentina. Si todos los que podemos, hacemos algo en ese sentido desde ahora, podemos ilusionarnos con un futuro mejor. ¿Un hoyo preferido de ambas canchas sedes? En Olivos Golf Club es el 15 sin dudas, en Buenos Aires Golf Club me inclino por el 17. 20

To receive so many representative teams from the most diverse countries-more than 70 men´s teams and 50 women´s teams- is an honour to which we would like to correspond accordingly. What expectations do you have in reference to the Argentinian teams? Do you like to perceive the team as candidate to winning the cup? Of course, we are ready to WIN; I can´t hope or wish anything else for the teams from Argentina due to the quality of their members, and their wholehearted commitment. Lots of countries that have a great tradition in this sport have already won the competition . This is a great opportunity for us. What is golf for you? Golf teaches us lots of things and the game is only a part of this great teaching. The importance of tradition and the respect for the values that have been instilled in us since childhood also contribute to the constant practice of this game which is really wonderful. I feel we have a debt with our country and I hope we can do something like providing education and ethical values through the playing of golf since I feel this is what is mainly missing in Argentina. If all of those who can really do something in this respect, we can all hope for a better future. Which is your favourite hole in each of the courses? At the Olivos Golf Club my favourite is undoubtedly Nº 15 while at the Buenos Aires Golf Club I lean towards Nº 17.

Diego True, greenkeeper del Club, nos cuenta los detalles de la preparación de la cancha para el World Amateur Team Championship 2010. Diego True, the club´s greenkeeper gives us details of the preparation of the course for the World Amateur Team Championship ¿Cuáles fueron los requisitos de la IGF? La Federación internacional de Golf nos pidió cumplir los siguientes requisitos para la presentación de la cancha. o Greens firmes y con una velocidad de 10.5 pies. o Aros cortados a 8 mm o Antegreens firmes y cortados con una triple a 8 mm o Rough cortado a 50 mm o Pre rough cortado a 25 mm. o Tees resembrados con rye grass y cortados a 8 mm o Fairways firmes con una altura de corte de 12 mm Renovación de bunkers y cross bunkers, los mismos tienen que estar firmes para que la pelota no se entierre. Actualizar el parque de maquinarias para el mantenimiento de la cancha. Las maquinarias con las que contábamos no nos permitirían afrontar este desafío. Este punto fue superado con creces. ¿Cuánto tiempo lleva preparar la cancha para un Campeonato de esta exigencia? Lo ideal es empezar a trabajar dos años antes de un torneo de esta índole. El Buenos Aires Golf comenzó en Diciembre del 2009 con un programa para eliminar la Poa Anua de los greens, Luego se continuo con la remodelación de los bun-

The ones we had before wouldn´t have allowed us to meet the challenge. This request was fully accomplished. How long does it take to prepare the course for such a demanding Championship? Ideally, you should start working two years before this kind of tournament. The Buenos Aires Golf started in December 2009 with a program to get rid of Pro Anua from the greens. Later the remodeling of the bunkers in the greens was taken up where new drains were made, the rows of bunkers were tidied and new sand was laid. 23

En el 2010 se procedió a la renovación de los cross bunkers de las canchas Green y Yellow. La preparación final lleva unos 2 a 3 meses, puliendo detalles estéticos. ¿Qué cuestiones especiales se deben considerar siendo un Campeonato tan extenso? Lo más importante es tener el personal incentivado para llevar las tareas acordes, ellos son el alma de la cancha y son los que la preparan día a día para que los jugadores puedan disfrutar de la misma. Por la parte agronómica y de manejo de los diferentes sectores, es importante poder tener la cancha en iguales condiciones de juego desde el primer al último día. En este punto entran en juego la cantidad de cortes de cada sector y la correcta aplicación de los agroquímicos. Como Greenkeeper, ¿Se disfrutan estos desafíos?

What is really important is to encourage the staff for them to carry out their chores in a satisfactory way. They are the soul of the course and it is them who work day in, day out so that the players can enjoy it. From the agronomical aspect and the handling of the different sectors what really matters is to keep the course in the same playing condition from the first to the last day. The amount of cuts in each sector and the correct use of agrochemicals have a part to play in this matter. As a greenkeeper, do you enjoy these challenges? Liliana Brocardi en su obra ¨Tramas¨ serie I juega con el ritmo y la forma; Elsa Herrero en “Energia” serie III trabaja con espacios serenos y a la vez concéntricos; Mirta Berdión en “Vida” serie I utiliza el agua como factor causante y conductivo del color; y Susana Ibarra en “Trazos” serie I, desarrolla una obra sumamente expresiva interviniendo el color como un gesto más de su sensibilidad.
