Reflection

Reflection 1 August–6 November 2016

Foreword Jacquiline Creswell Salisbury Cathedral is one of Britain’s finest medieval cathedrals, and one of the world’s iconic works of Early English gothic architecture. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to marvel and experience the special atmosphere of this unique place every year. Here the presence of God is celebrated through worship, music and art, which transform the everyday and incite wonder. Reflection is a breathtaking collection of works. Nine renowned international artists who work with glass from as far afield as New Zealand have been inspired to create site-specific installations for Salisbury Cathedral’s exhibition. The challenge for these talented artists has been to respond to the context of the Cathedral, its spirituality, its history and the community and visitors who come here. The artists have opened a dialogue between the artwork and this setting, synthesising space, light, context and narrative and enriching our awareness of the space. Glass transmits, reflects and refracts light. It is a captivating, versatile medium which touches our lives in many ways. Like architecture, glass divides light and space, but this material possesses transcending qualities beyond its physicality, with its unique character capable of transforming our environment and the way we see things. Glass is a material to look through in order to see out. This exhibition offers us an opportunity to look at ourselves, through ourselves, and reflect.

The intrinsic purity of glass captures our imaginations. The alchemical transformation of sand into crystal clear objects and the sense of wonder that accompanies the moments of transformation when a molten mass becomes a precious solid form, commands respect and reverence. The result is spectacular! The artists here have exploited the inherent properties of glass using diverse methods of making. Their creations range from lavish and sumptuous to confident, impactful installations where forms precede and are followed by accumulations and gatherings. Several of the artists have used repetitions of forms into elegant groupings, while others have created a cogent and successful architectural aesthetic and narrative statement. The stained glass windows of Salisbury Cathedral explore biblical narratives and reflect different periods in history, yet the uniting medium and colour palette permeates the vaulted space. This exhibition seeks to explore contemporary glass sculpture and installations within this long age-old tradition. Exhibition Curators: Jacquiline Creswell, Salisbury Cathedral’s Visual Arts Adviser, and Rebecca Newnham

Sally Fawkes and Richard Jackson Time to Reflect On reflection I changed my mind On reflection my mind was changed On reflection I understood more On reflection more was understood On reflection I saw more On reflection a new perspective was seen On reflection the most precious thing, is time to reflect. “Our work is concerned with perception and interaction with spaces and places. We are interested in the layers of place, how history informs the present and how, in turn, people interact and respond to their surroundings. Our artwork is a three dimensional visual narrative; the overall image offers a sense of security whilst the various facets and elements will keep the eye moving. The steel structure suggests growth, rising from firm foundations, offering support whilst navigating the journey. www.sallyfawkes.com www.richardjackson-glass.com
