1980 DONALD OLIVER has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.

1965 JAMES COWAN has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.

1969 JOHN YOUNG received an honourary degree from Saint Mary’s University at the Fall 2019 Convocation.

LEE COHEN was recognized by the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society with its 2019 Distinguished Service Award.

1981 BRIAN CASEY has been admitted as a Fellow to the Litigation Counsel of America. He practices with BoyneClarke LLP in Dartmouth, NS.

1983 DEBORAH SMITH was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.

1971 MICK RYAN, partner with Stewart McKelvey’s Halifax, NS office, was appointed the Chair of Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada for a two-year term. He is the first individual from eastern Canada to fill this role.

1973 LAWRENCE FREEMAN, partner with Stewart McKelvey’s Halifax, NS office, was elected Chair of the Board of Governors at Saint Mary’s University.

1974 BRENT COTTER has been appointed an independent Senator representing Saskatchewan by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He is the former Dean of Law at the University of Saskatchewan.

1977 SUSAN HOOD, retired Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice, is the chair of Nova Scotia’s Criminal Review Board. RAYMOND MORSE has been appointed Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court Family Division. He will preside in Truro, NS.

1984 DAVID COLES has been named a Fellow to the Litigation Counsel of America. He has also been named Regional Chair of the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute (Atlantic Region). He practices with BoyneClarke LLP in Dartmouth, NS. KEVIN LATIMER, partner with Cox & Palmer’s Halifax, NS office, has been elected Chair of the Board of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. KEN MILLS is practicing litigation with Blake Cassels and Graydon after serving as the Calgary office’s managing partner for 16 years.

1985 STEPHEN COUGHLAN was named one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers for 2019. GAVIN GILES, partner in McInnes Cooper’s Halifax, NS office, was recognized for his 20-year history of voluntary service to the Canadian Red Cross when he was invested into The Order of the Red Cross, Officer Level. This is the second highest honour the Red Cross bestows on its volunteers.

KATHRYN RAYMOND of BoyneClarke LLP in Dartmouth, NS has received a part-time appointment to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. KAY RHODENIZER continues as counsel to MDW Law in Halifax, NS but has moved her home office to New Minas where she is expanding family law/estates practice to the Annapolis Valley and Bridgewater areas. JOHN WILKINSON was awarded the 2019 John Hackett Memorial Award by the Canadian Association of University Solicitors (CAUS). The award was established to recognize significant contributions and is presented to a member who has earned the respect of the association and has demonstrated a dedication to goodwill, friendship and rigorous legal scholarship in university legal issues. He is a Partner with WeirFoulds LLP’s Toronto, ON office.

1986 MICHELLE CHRISTOPHER was appointed Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta on November 6, 2018. She is the first female judge of the Judicial District of Medicine Hat. She sits in all seven of the courts in the province’s southern region, including Medicine Hat, Brooks, Lethbridge, Taber, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Cardston.

1988 JACK GRAHAM was appointed Chair of the Board of Directors of McInnes Cooper. He is a partner in the firm’s Halifax, NS office. He was also re-elected for a record fifth term to the Board of Directors of the International Tennis Federation. He also serves as Director Emeritus on Tennis Canada’s board. ANDREW MACDONALD was appointed Chief Crown Attorney, Special Initiatives. This role is responsible for the technological management of cases.

1990 GLEN NOEL has been appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.

1991 ANDREW FRASER has been admitted as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He is a partner with Stewart McKelvey’s Halifax, NS office.

1994

HEATHER MCNEILL was recognized by Dalhousie University with a 2019 Aurum Award. This alumni award celebrates the meaningful work that alumni 1987 are making in our communities. After spending 21 years working as a Dalhousie ROBERT BALCOM graduated Legal Aid lawyer, she is now Legal Advisor of from the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto at the 2019 the Enhanced Child Family Initiative at the Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative Negotiation Office. Fall Convocation with a Master of Laws specializing in international business law. He is the General Counsel of Wittington 1995 Investments, Limited, a holding company of PAMELA MARCHE has been appointed a the Weston family. Prior to his current role, Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court Rob held senior legal positions with George Family Division. She will preside in Sydney, Weston and Loblaw Companies. He lives NS. in Toronto with his wife, Shari, and their 3 children, Leah (’18), Brett and Carlie. CANDACE THOMAS was named a Chatelaine 2019 Woman of the Year. She was also appointed Nova Scotia’s Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Minister of the Office of Social Innovation and Integrative Approaches. In July 2019 she was elected Chair of Dalhousie University’s Board of Governors.
