CELEBRATING OUR ALUMNI COMMUNITY

Dear alumni family,

As I reflect back over the last year, I can’t help but smile thinking about the good work we accomplished and the fun we had. Despite an abrupt and troubling end to the academic year, we have many things for which to be grateful and celebrate. I look forward to the day when we can gather again and look back upon this period in history.

Last year, we were able to bring together law alumni in Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, St. John’s, New York and London, UK. We had events planned this spring for Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary and Yellowknife, that unfortunately could not take place. We had over 150 alumni gather for our annual Law Alumni Reunion Weekend where we featured Anne McLellan as our guest speaker and recognized Fred Fountain with the 2019 Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service. We also inducted 12 esteemed and accomplished alumni into the Bertha Wilson Honour Society. Last year, our Indigenous Blacks and Mi’kmaq Initiative celebrated its 30th anniversary and we were delighted to join in a celebration that welcomed many alumni back to Halifax. This year, marks the 50th anniversary of the Dalhousie Legal Aid Service as we plan to recognize many valued alumni for their work and impact. Through all of the challenges associated with this pandemic, you have continued to support us in many ways. You have volunteered to be a student mentor, teach a class, or organize an event in your community. You have hired our students – doubling the number of internships available to students who found themselves without summer jobs. You have given financially – either directly to law school initiatives or through your class giving projects. You have truly embodied the Weldon Tradition of unselfish public service.

On behalf of Tammi Hayne and myself, we would like to personally thank you for all you have done and continue to do for your law school. We look forward to providing you with life-long learning, engagement, networking, recognition and celebration opportunities over the next year – however that may take shape. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition of Hearsay and always welcome your advice and feedback.

Sincerely,

Darren Dick Director, External Relations Schulich School of Law
