1985

STEPHEN COUGHLAN was named one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers for 2019.

GAVIN GILES, partner in McInnes Cooper’s Halifax, NS office, was recognized for his 20-year history of voluntary service to the Canadian Red Cross when he was invested into The Order of the Red Cross, Officer Level. This is the second highest honour the Red Cross bestows on its volunteers. KATHRYN RAYMOND of BoyneClarke LLP in Dartmouth, NS has received a part-time appointment to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

KAY RHODENIZER continues as counsel to MDW Law in Halifax, NS but has moved her home office to New Minas where she is expanding family law/estates practice to the Annapolis Valley and Bridgewater areas.

JOHN WILKINSON was awarded the 2019 John Hackett Memorial Award by the Canadian Association of University Solicitors (CAUS). The award was established to recognize significant contributions and is presented to a member who has earned the respect of the association and has demonstrated a dedication to goodwill, friendship and rigorous legal scholarship in university legal issues. 1986

MICHELLE CHRISTOPHER was appointed Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta on November 6, 2018. She is the first female judge of the Judicial District of Medicine Hat. She sits in all seven of the courts in the province’s southern region, including Medicine Hat, Brooks, Lethbridge, Taber, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Cardston.

1987

ROBERT BALCOM graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto at the 2019 Fall Convocation with a Master of Laws specializing in international business law. He is the General Counsel of Wittington Investments, Limited, a holding company of the Weston family. Prior to his current role, Rob held senior legal positions with George Weston and Loblaw Companies. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Shari, and their 3 children, Leah (’18), Brett and Carlie. 1988

1994

HEATHER MCNEILL was recognized by Dalhousie University with a 2019 Aurum Award. This alumni award celebrates the meaningful work that alumni are making in our communities. After spending 21 years working as a Dalhousie Legal Aid lawyer, she is now Legal Advisor of the Enhanced Child Family Initiative at the Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative Negotiation Office.

1995 PAMELA MARCHE has been appointed a Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court Family Division. She will preside in Sydney, NS.

CANDACE THOMAS was named a Chatelaine 2019 Woman of the Year. She was also appointed Nova Scotia’s Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Minister of the Office of Social Innovation and Integrative Approaches. In July 2019 she was elected Chair of Dalhousie University’s Board of Governors.

PAUL MORRIS has been appointed a Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court Family Division. He will preside in Pictou, NS.

MICHEL SAMSON, counsel with Cox & Palmer’s Halifax, NS office, was appointed to the 2019 Board of Directors for Marine Renewables Canada.

JUDY WHITE is the Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. She is the first Indigenous woman to fill the role. She is also the Assistant Deputy Minister of Indigenous and Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat with the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

ALETA CROMWELL was appointed Judge of the Provincial and Family Court of Nova Scotia on July 9, 2020.
