Year 10 Careers discovery week July 2025
● Including WEX in year 10 Careers discovery weekworkshops, visiting speakers, visit to a local post-16 provider tailored to individual pathways, financial education, team building opportunities and more
Why do work experience?
● 88% less likely to be NEET ( Not in Education, Employment or training)
● Evidence of soft skills, transferable skills and experience for future applications
● Opportunity to try out the world of work

How ?
• Students to find their own placements
• Family members/ friends
• Primary school/ Clubs/ Shops/ Services/local businesses and employers/ family friends
• Ask around ‘shy bairns’
• Aim high – don’t just pick a convenient option.
• Ask your child to think about what they would really like to work as or study in the future – it’s a chance to check it out!

What is allowed?
• Low risk i.e not working at height or using heavy machinery
• Based in one place i.e not delivering or moving to multiple work locations
• Some exceptions e.g car garage can be exempted in writing to accept minors and provide a valid risk assessment
• MUST have a VALID Employer liability insurance certificate ( to be attached in Unifrog)
• Sole traders must be able to provide evidence of Public Liability Insurance ( they are exempt by law from needing ELI)
• At least school hours 0845-1515, can be outside of school hours with parental permission

• Contact potential employers, in person, social media, email, letter via phone
• Resources on Unifrog e.g template letter to employer
• Letter sent via app and paper copy via tutors with links to resources and login

• Individual circumstances will be considered e.g Army Work experience or NHS with greater constraints on dates
• Wealth of Virtual Work experience placements available – students would need to provide evidence on complete forms in the same way on Unifrog
• Those remaining in school (of which we hope there are very few) will have more careers based activities put on for them but normal timetable will be suspended

• Add placement to Unifrog ONLY after placement has been agreed with the employer Will need contact details of placement lead at employer
• Employer adds to placement including risk assessment and copies of insurance certificates
• Parental consent
• School agreement
• School check-in via phone once placement is in progress

1. Scroll down to Exploring pathways.
2. Placements (purple box)
3. Click Go to tool.
4. Click Add new placement.
5. Complete all the information required - Make sure you have the contact details of your employer placement lead to hand.
• SCHOOL EMAIL – accessible by searching ‘Microsoft 365’, if unsure of email address ask Form Tutors who have a list/can search it
• Only add a placement AFTER you have been in contact with an employer

• Sooner the better to secure placement it’s a competitive week in Hartlepool for WEX
• Initial contact with placement to be made by Christmas
• Add placement onto Unifrog before returning for the new year
